Vehicle crashes into cemetery gate and fence, causing extensive damage

BY TREENA MIELKE Charges are pending against an individual who went on a rampage Wednesday night, tearing out lengths of the chain link fence and damaging the gates of the Mount Auburn Cemetery.

Const. Tommy de Roos said he received a call early Wednesday morning of an alleged break in at Home Hardware. As it turns out, the store was not broken into, but the

damage to the fence and gates, as well as to several road signs along Hwy. 53 was obvious.

Const. de Roos is grateful for the help of some quick thinking residents who helped him locate the vehicle north of town that was obviously involved in the vandalism.

“A chain link fence was attached to it,” he said.

“Charges are pending and we have a suspect,” he added. “We really appreciated the help of the

public for solving this one.”

Rimbey acting CAO Donna Tona said she believes there is about $18,000 damage as a result of the rampage.

“The chain link fence was destroyed, the gate was damaged as were hedges and two Spruce trees will have to come down,” she said. “It’s disgusting. I’m just grateful the cemetery wasn’t breached.”

dalism means public works staff has to spend time repairing the damage, putting them behind schedule in getting their own work done.

She said there was also damage to signs on a county road and the county has been notified.

Treena Mielke On The Other Side As summer weaves its lovely way into the world, it seems all kinds of good things are happening.

‘Tis the season!

Take my garden for instance. Despite all odds it is sprouting up, its slightly patchy green rows staggering in less than straight lines like slightly drunken sail-

ors, but growing sufficiently none-the-less. I check it every morning before I go to work.

I must say I am so pleased I no longer have to get out a magnifying glass to prove that little seeds watered with hope, faith and my backyard watering can are actually growing.

And my backyard is as green as grass, well, it is grass actually, a most lovely grass, I might add.

And to me, the fact that this lovely green grass was thoroughly trampled by one slightly rambunctious puppy and six grandchildren, who were no less rambunctious, when I held the first wiener roast of the year, is a very good thing.

I planned the wiener roast in honor of Father’s Day and, much to my absolute amazement, my plan worked.

Minus two son-in-laws, the whole fam-damily showed up.

And it didn’t rain and the sun shone down on us and the fire didn’t go out and every grandchild was there.

True, I had to have a little grandmotherly chat with the two oldest, 13 and 12, respectively. I found them in the piano room. The oldest was communicating in the way most young people communicate today.

She was texting.

“I need you to come outside,” I said sternly, sounding old and strict and slightly exasperated mostly because I was. “Grandma has worked very hard to make this happen and grandpa made an outdoor Yahtzee game for you to play and everything.”

“Grandma there’s a wasp,” my grandson replied, totally ignoring me, the way young

boys who know very well they are loved beyond compare, can do and get away with. “There’s a wasp on the floor.”

Oh for Pete’s sake,” I said, attempting to kill the annoying, buzzing insect with my shoe.

“Grandma, do you kill things?” he teased. I threatened him with my shoe, but he only laughed.

I pointed to the stairs.

“Out with you both,” I admonished. They went obediently, masking their giggles only slightly.

It was a great party, filled with all the right ingredients to make it so. There was food, music, a fire, kids and, thrown into the mix, a puppy with imploring brown eyes, a matching silky coat and large floppy ears.

The children enjoyed themselves immensely.

They played the Yahtzee game, threw the dog’s toys around, chased the dog and were chased by the dog.

They ate, laughed, teased each other and amused themselves by a mindless but competitive game of seeing who could toss a paper cup the farthest.

The youngest, munching on a piece of juicy red watermelon, stood close to his grandpa watching him put together his new outdoor speakers. When the music started, he rocked his little diapered self to the rock ‘n roll tunes, still munching away on the fruit.

Watching him, I suddenly felt this overwhelming sense of gratitude for lots of things, but one thing in particular.

I truly am one of the lucky ones.

I am a grandma!

My cousin is approaching the age when all the older folks start asking, “what are you going to do after high school? Where are you going to live? Are you going to college?”

The poor kid still has an Xbox set up in the basement and now he has been forced into thinking about a career, an apartment, and tuition.

Thankfully my sister was

around when my cousin was getting grilled and gave him some good cousinly advice. She informed him that when life got tough and circumstances sucked the bank accounts dry, there is no shame in moving back home.

My sister is only a couple years younger than me.

She’s lived in apartments, basement suites and houses throughout Red Deer and Calgary with various combinations of roommates and pets (sometimes the line gets blurred between the two). She knows all too well that sometimes your hours at work get cut, sometimes your roommates bail on rent, and sometimes you’re left with no choice but to call your brother to help you move again.

From what I understand, my cousin was pretty relieved after my sister passed down some of her advice.

And I tend to think that liv-

ing on your own shouldn’t feel like you’re walking the plank.

It seems to me that there is this negative stigma floating around out there about living at home too long after high school and about moving back home when your failed attempt at adulthood leaves you broke. Living at home probably isn’t a bad thing if you are helping the old man farm the land and feed animals. Nor is living at home a bad thing if you are saving for a down payment on a house. And moving back home isn’t going to be a bad thing if a cardboard box in the alley is the only other option.

I’ve got another cousin that is trying to make a go of it in Edmonton. She’s in her early twenties and just broke up with her boyfriend—her first serious relationship. She’s also teetering on the idea of having

to move back home. As it turns out, living in downtown Edmonton is expensive.

Sometimes you have to do a strategic retreat. Which is what I’m approaching with trepidation.

The bank approved my mortgage and I managed to get out of Dad’s house before my 22nd birthday. A few years later the money was good at work, there was a new truck and a new motorcycle in the driveway, and I was living like a high roller when I went on vacation. Those good times came and passed.

Now I get upset at the price of a bottle of Febreze, I drive a beater car, I parked the motorcycle, and I have the house listed for sale.

All of the latter occurred because I’m chasing down a post-secondary education.

Maybe I am going about adulthood backwards. Most would argue that you get

the education first, the job second, the house third, and all the fun stuff afterwards. My life’s VHS tape is on rewind.

My mixed up approach to adulthood is garnering similar themed questions, similar to questions my cousin with the Xbox is receiving.

Am I going to get another mortgage, another high paying job, and/or another new truck after I get a degree? Those “million dollar” questions I don’t have the answers to and I’m almost 30.

Life isn’t like the Xbox games played in mom and dad’s basement: there is not steady and measured progression into adulthood and throughout life. Life is more like a pinball machine: you got to keep putting in quarters and manically operate the flippers to keep the little steel ball from disappearing into the abyss of the machine of ideology.

Tax break granted to numbered company

BY TREENA MIELKE Rimbey town council has agreed to grant a numbered company a tax break on one lot retroactive to 2014.

At its June 13 meeting, council agreed to comply with the request of the property owner.

Council agreed to refund the 2014 municipal portion of the property tax for $662.66 and the 2015 municipal portion of $696.15. The 2016 municipal portion of the tax owing was canceled.

Mayor Rick Pankiw explained that council agreed to the tax break as the lot is unsalable due to a caveat placed on an access roadway by Alberta Transportation.

“The town of Rimbey has attended two meeting with Alberta Transportation asking them to remove the caveat, but they have refused due to the possibility of future development requiring that road for access,” said Pankiw.

Rimoka picks up cost of shallow services in the interim

BY TREENA MIELKE Work is continuing on the Rimbey seniors’ lodge with one of the next steps to be the installation of shallow services.

At its meeting last Wednesday, Rimoka Housing agreed to pick up the tab for the cost of the shallow services in the interim. Developer Stan Cummings is to come up with the required funds at a later date.

“It was the board’s decision to expedite the process,” said board chairman Paul McLauchlin.

He said the engineering design for the shallow services has been submitted for approval and they should be installed within the next few months.

Mayor Rick Pankiw, who also sits on the Rimoka board said the original cost of the shallow services was $158,000, but he is hopeful the cost will come in lower than that.

Pankiw said a project meeting was held Thursday morning and construction is going ahead as planned.

Browne retires from Rimbey post office after 27 years

Val Browne retired from the Rimbey post office last Thursday. The public was invited to join in saying goodbye and wishing her well at a farewell get-together at the post office.

For 27 years Val Browne has been a well-known friendly fixture at the Rimbey post office.

She has been the smiling face behind the counter helping people sort out the most effective way to send their mail, whether it be parcel post of priority or registered mail. And she has been there to chat and willingly lend a listening ear to each and every one of her customers.

And, throughout the years, through the ups and downs experienced by Canada Post, Browne enjoyed her job and did her best to keep her customers happy.

But on June 23, 2016, a bright, clear sunny day in summer, the petite blonde postal clerk handed in her keys for the last time.

She decided to make the move that eventually comes to all of the working public.

Taking a moment to chat on her last day before her co-workers threw her a goodbye party, the gregarious lady reflected on the new chapter in her life that will, no doubt, come with retirement.

“It’s bittersweet,” she said.

“It’s an ending, but it’s also a new beginning.”

Browne began working in the old post office located on Main Street in 1989 and was on staff when the new post office was built in 2003.

She recalled the ways things used to be in her early days of working. She said each clerk had their own drawer containing stamps and cash.

“We did not have a till in those days,” she said.

“Everything was done manually.”

She recalled the days when employees were allowed to smoke in the buildings, noting smoke marks remained on the ceiling from one of the former postmasters.

Throughout the years, Browne got to know her customers and soon knew who would have a joke to tell or simply want to chat.

“Scotty (Aitken) was probably my funniest customer,” she said. “He always has a joke and enjoys a laugh.”

Browne will miss her customers, many of whom she knew as neighbors and friends.

Watching children come in with their parents to pick up parcels or mail a letter or get their own personal stamp was fun, she said.

“I’m going to miss the customers,” she said. “It’s been a pleasure to help people at the counter. I enjoyed waiting on the people, visiting with them and steering them in the right direction.”

She said Christmas was a busy time, and even though Christmas card delivery has declined, the parcels have not.

BY TREENA MIELKE The Writers’ Guild of Alberta has singled out an Edmonton author with family roots in Rimbey for an award.

Kate A. Boorman won the R. Ross Annett Award for Children’s Literature sponsored by

the Under the Arch Youth Foundation at the Calgary Foundation for her novel, WINTERKILL. Boorman received her award at the Alberta Literary Awards Gala on June 4, 2016 in MacDonald Hall at SAIT in Calgary.

In a telephone interview from her home in

Edmonton, where she is busy working on a new novel, Boorman said receiving the award was “wonderful.”

“I feel like a relative newcomer to the writing community and it was really lovely to be recognized by my peers.”

In her novel, WINTERKILL, Boorman takes the reader on a thrilling journey of alternate history where a fearsome mysterious enemy isolates a frontier settlement and an ostracized teenage girl dealing with life, love and family secrets is the strong female heroine.

Boorman was inspired by the history of North America as she created

the settlement of the west in her book. As the story unfolds, Emmeline, the young heroine finds love and fights to uncover the truth about her family’s legacy in a community ruled by fear.

Abrams/Amulet, the book’s publisher said the book is a must-read that is equally thrilling, creepy and touching.

A graduate of the University of Alberta with a Masters in Art, Boorman is by no means a novice writer, but her field of expertise previously centered on non-fiction and research articles.

Boorman is now working on another book about sibling rivalry between two sisters whose parents have disappeared.

Boorman, who is the daughter of Dr. Michael and Annette Boorman was born in Nepal and grew up in Rimbey.

Alberta Rimbey Christian School won first place in the Plastic Bag Grab challenge held during Earth Week 2016 (April 18 to 22).

During the week, elementary school students from across Canada collected 2,279,601 plastic shopping bags — approximately 18.4 metric tonnies of plastic — and brought them to their local Walmart store for recycling. The amount of plastic collected weighs as much as three orcas.

“When youth understand the importance of protecting the environment and see firsthanmd their actions make a difference it leads to life-long habits of sustainability and awareness,” says JoAnne St. Godard, executive director, recycling council of Ontario.

We were amazed that in five short days the schools couldcollect more than 18 tonnes of plastic that will now be used as a resource for making new material instead of filling landfills and waterways.”

Thievery happening at Tickle Trunk, a non profit store

BY TREENA MIELKE Stealing from a business or an individual is never a good thing, but stealing from a non profit goodwill store, whose main purpose is to help those less fortunate seems especially wrong.

Unofortunately, that is what is happening at the Tickle Trunk, a small non profit store located on Rimbey’s Main Street.

Some items, which have been donated to the Tickle Trunk, are being stolen before the merchandise ever makes it out to the floor.

Ge. Hofstra, often fondly referred to as Oma, is manager of the Tickle Trunk and works there four days a week. Hofstra said a letter has been received from an anonymous person who noted items intended for sale at the store are being sold privately.

“People should not leave stuff outside, they need to bring it inside when we are here,” she said.

As well as items being stolen from outside, Hofstra noted the good will store has been broken into, the cash registered stolen and the front window smashed.

The store is packed with a variety of items including clothes, small furniture, appliances, jewelery, bedding and an assortment of ornaments and trinkets.

Once the monthly rent and utilities is paid, proceeds from the sale of the items go to the Rimbey Food Bank, the Christian School or to other worthy charities or individuals in need.

The Tickle Trunk is open Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is operated by 17 volunteers.

BY TREENA MIELKE The Godly spirit of James Rimbey who donated land on which the town’s first Nazarene Church was built seemed alive and well as people gathered together last weekend to celebrate the church’s 100th birthday.

Rev. Grant Rainey said he is pleased and grateful that the pioneer spirit of the church’s forefather’s was evident during the church’s celebrations.

“It was a real success. We had many former members in attendance with more than 150 at our banquet.”

Rev. Rainey was pleased to welcome people who had attended the church as far back as the 1920s and ‘30s.

Lois McCrackin, who was born in the ‘20s, attended the church from the time she was a newborn. During Sunday’s service, the elderly lady sang a duet with her son, Wayne.

Dr. Larry Dahl, District Superintendent of the Nazarene Church was the guest speaker at the celebration service.

M.P. Blaine Calkins, MLA Jason Nixon and Mayor Rick Pankiw were also in attendance as was Pastor Reg Darnell from Rimbey Ministerial Association.

Rainey said the church is looking ahead to becoming more involved in the community.

“Our plan and strategy over the next five years is for more penetration into the community,” he said.

He noted that Blackfalds, Lacombe, Rimbey and Breton and surrounding area has the lowest rate of churchgoers in Alberta. He added that only about 20 per cent of the population of Rimbey attend church regularly.

“We see this as a great opportunity to minister in our community.”

The team won their first game against Edmonton St Peter School by a score of 48-0. However, in the second game that day, they lost a heartbreaker to WR Myers from Taber by a score of 56-48 which put them into the bronze medal match the next day against Banff. Rimbey won by a score of 55-0.

BY TREENA MIELKE The Rimbey Oldtimers’ Reunion was a gala affair, punctuated with lots of laughter, hugs and even a few tears as old friends, many of whom had been separated by time and distance, enjoyed a few special hours together.

The reunion was held last weekend, June 18 and 19 with over 200 people registered.

This year the class of ’66 was recognized.

“This recognition included everyone that started school in 1954 and attended Rimbey schools. They didn’t have to graduate from Rimbey or graduated at all to be part of the class of ’66,” said Ormberg.

This year the old-timers association recognized the W.E. (Bill) Calkins family, who homesteaded at Lockhart in 1900.

Local MP Blaine Calkins, who is part of the Calkins family, attended the reunion.

The registration fee was lowered this year and a cash concession was available from noon to 4 p.m.

Supper was held at 5:30 p.m. and a dance to followed.

A pancake breakfast was held at Pas Ka Poo Park from 8 to 11 a.m. on Sunday.

TUSTIAN Sandra “Sandy” Jean Tustian of Rimbey, Alberta passed away suddenly at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Sunday, June 19, 2016 at the age of 53 years.

Sandy was born in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan on September 28, 1962 to Shirley and Gerald Tustian. She attended school in Cochrane as a youngster, and finished her schooling in Rimbey when the family relocated here.

Growing up, Sandy experienced many health problems, but endeavored to make every day a bright and positive one. She worked for a few years at the Grand Hotel in Rimbey, then met Art Cooper and they became life-long friends. When Art passed away in 2004, Sandy remained on the farm until October 16, 2013, at which time she endured a terrible car accident. The accident placed Sandy in a wheelchair for almost the last three years.

Her dream was always on her mind to return back home to care for her cats, whom she loved dearly.

Sandy will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her mother, Shirley Ford of Winfield; and her two sisters: Joanne (Cliff) Reynolds of Winfield; and Lynita (Roy) Stevenson of Rocky Mountain House; in addition to her nephew, Dwayne (Deanna) Reynolds also of Winfield.

Sandy was predeceased by her father, Gerald on June 19, 2004; and the love of her life, Art Cooper on October 16, 2004.

A Graveside Service was held at the Bradshaw Cemetery, Rimbey on Friday, June 24, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. A Celebration of Sandy’s Life followed at the Last West Hall, Rimbey at 1:00 p.m. with the Reverend Jeanette Engblom officiating. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Sandy’s Memory may be made directly to STARS Head Office, 1441 Aviation Park N.E., Box 570, Calgary, Alberta T2E 8M7 (www.stars.ca). Amendment to Land Use By-Law 7-08-LU The Council of Ponoka County has been asked by Janet & Allen Marr to amend Land Use By-Law 7-08-LU as follows: Reclassify Pt. SW 18-44-4-W5 from Agricultural District to Country Residential Hobby Farm District to allow for future subdivision of the rezoned area (1 parcel to be created).
