Rimbey RCMP respond to more than sixty calls in a week

BY CONST. CARMAN DUTZ The last week has been a busy one for the Rimbey RCMP. Over 60 incidents were investigated including nine break & enters, eight thefts, domestic violence, four impaired driving reports, and an assault with a weapon.

On May 26 many people in Rimbey found their vehicles, garages, and businesses vandalized by spray paint over night. That morning the Rimbey RCMP got busy on the case and found that 10 cars, five outbuildings and a business, all in the town, were vandalised with black and red spray paint. A thorough investigation identified two youth suspects who are not residents of Rimbey.

They have been charged with a total of 17 counts of mischief to property. The identity of the offenders is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. A 27- year-old male from Rimbey has been charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle after he was stopped early in the morning of June 3 for driving a motorcycle in Rimbey without a helmet. His first court appearance in Rimbey will be on July 22.

Later in the evening of June 3, the Rimbey RCMP were called to investigate a targeted assault that occurred on 53rd Ave near 51 St. in Rimbey. A younger male was seen assaulting an older male on the street. An investigation into the incident found that the assailant allegedly hit the older male with a baseball bat. As a result, a 29-yearold Rimbey male has been charged with assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and uttering threats. His first court appearance in Rimbey will be on July 22.

The fence was built mostly because the old one was falling down. It was an embarrassing situation, actually.

to my fingers and my arms and my whole self, actually.

Reality is using a hand auger after the power auger quit, using sheer manpower to dig through clumps of black clay and little bits of rock and gravel to set the posts for my visionary white fence.

Reality is measuring the boards and measuring them again and still being wrong.

Reality is seeing my very dearest and best friends (at least they are now) sweating and pounding and hammering and measuring and carrying lengths of lumber in my back yard through a heat wave which escalated to a heat warning, of all things.

Reality is getting up at 6 a.m. to paint one million, two hundred and fifty boards and then finding out there are 17 more that have not been blessed with

my sloppy paint rolling efforts.

Reality is sending out SOS emails along with little happy face icons asking for help and learning that the saying, ‘build it and they will come,’ is probably a lot truer than the saying, ‘they will come help build it.’

Reality is also knowing how good a cold beer tastes when the work seems endless, the sun is merciless and it seems that leisure and air conditioning belong only to the very rich.

But I also have to say that somewhere along the little fence-building journey I also learned another thing or two about reality.

Reality can be good. Very good.

Reality is having friends who don’t care if they get their hands dirty or covered in paint. Reality is friends who don’t do a lot of talking, only a lot of

doing.

Reality is hearing the words, “How can I help?

You gotta love those words, especially if you’re building a fence and it’s a heat wave and the work seems endless and the day seems too long and you’re oh, so tired.

But now I know one thing for sure.

The famous singing group, “The Beatles’ knew what they were talking (singing) about when they crooned, “I’ll get by with a little help from my friends.”

So true! So very true!

I doubt if the Beatles ever built a fence, but I’m sure if they had, someone would have come along with a power auger and a case of cold ones. And then someone would have pulled out a guitar and they would have sung the night away.

Come to think of it, we did that, too.

And finally after a long winter of my husband and I saying morosely to each other, “we really need to do something about that fence,” it happened.

We’re doing something about that fence.

I envisioned a little white picket fence with sweet peas or maybe roses spilling all over the boards.

I envisioned a cute little fence, magically installed, with boards that somehow painted themselves sparking white before someone, (maybe Tom Sawyer’s friend) slipped them easily into place.

As it turns out my vision might as well have been packed up with all those old fence boards and hauled out to recycle.

It did not even come close to reality.

Reality is typing this column with telltale bits of white paint still clinging

I can’t claim to have ever sailed the High Seas, but I have been on a few different fishing boat expeditions. I fished the Pacific Ocean on a beautiful Grady White almost ten years ago with an uncle (through marriage) and his cousin. A few years back I somehow managed to scrounge up enough funds to accompany some distant relatives on a Northern Alberta fly-in fishing trip: boating on the lake wasn’t as impressive as the Cessna flight in.

And I’ve always tagged along with other various uncles and co-workers on their boats to fish all over Alberta.

I never owned my own fishing boat till a few years ago. The boat I acquired was nothing special.

Actually, it was a floating piece of garbage. It was a ten foot fiberglass wreck that would be better suited for a backyard hot tub, than it would be for a fishing vessel. I never set sail in it and sold it to a co-worker.

I used the funds from that transaction to purchase an old relic from an uncle: a flat bottomed ten foot aluminum that had circulated through the family for a number of years. I was still missing an important document and a piece of equipment before I could captain the magnificent watercraft on any body of water larger than a pond. My Pleasure Craft Operators License was obtained easily

enough; and I procured a borrowed boat motor from a friend.

Now I needed a loyal fishing crew. A high school friend from Grande Prairie showed some interest in embarking on a weekend fishing trip. We hashed out some navigation plans to sail on the waters of Gull Lake.

The borrowed boat motor’s operation was verified in a rain barrel in my back yard during the evening before we had planned to sail. The rest of the night was spent organizing important fishing equipment and ensuring the necessary snacks would be aboard.

My friend and I arrived at the lake quite late the next morning: we both had hangovers. But we still maintained sufficient enthusiasm and energy, which we would need for the ensuing shenanigans.

The boat was loaded except for all the fishing gear. I wanted to do a

quick little loop close to the shore to ensure the boat motor’s reliability.

My friend agreed and we launched with only the necessary equipment onboard: including the Spitz.

The boat motor started and ran great. I was at the stern and my friend was at the bow leaning slightly to starboard. I decided to engage the propeller and increase the throttle speed. We began to calmly cruise away from dry land. My friend gave me a nod and I increased the throttle speed to half. The excellent performance of the vessel’s equipment suggested we would have a great day fishing. Then I got really brave and opened up the throttle wide open.

The disparity in weight between the two of us aboard and the uneven distribution of equipment in the boat caused the whole works to capsize. Everything ended up in the lake; and the

boat motor slipped off the stern and found its way to bikini bottom. Thankfully the lake was still shallow enough to stand with our heads above water.

My friend is a human version of a water buffalo. He disappeared under water for a moment to locate the motor (the fuel line was still attached to the floating gas can).

He then, with one hand holding the boat motor under water, clutched the rope tied to the bow and proceeded to trudge his way back to shore—oddly enough he was smiling…

I frantically grabbed the loose lifejackets, the emergency pail, and the oars.

The anchor was never seen again (a failed knot), and the bag of Spitz floated off into the horizon. We both made it back to shore safely, water logged, and a little confused.

I sold the boat and returned the borrowed motor shortly after that failed attempt at sailing.

Rimbey Church of the Nazarene is to celebrate 100 years

BY TREENA MIELKE Rimbey Church of the Nazarene will soon celebrate its 100th birthday.

In honor of the event a service of celebration is to be held on June 19th at 2 p.m. at the church and local dignitaries including MP Blaine Calkins, MLA Jason Nixon and Rimbey mayor Rick Pankiw will be in attendance.

Dr. Larry Dahl, District Superintendent for the Church of the Nazarene will speak and all community churches are invited to attend.

Coffee and cake will be served following the service.

“The Rimbey church is one of the oldest Nazarene churches in all of Canada,” said Rev. Grant Rainey.

In a written history of the Rimbey Church of the Nazarene he noted the birth of a church is as unique and individual as the people who make it up. The Rimbey Church of the Nazarene is no exception, he said.

“Like many other Nazarene Churches, it began in the fires of revival.”

The first church was built on land donated by Jim Rimbey. It was constructed by his son, Phineas.

Charter members of the church were Vera Rimbey, Retha (Rimbey) Wright, Nancy Rimbey, Phineas Rimbey, John Wright, Mr. and Mrs. James Rimbey. Mrs. Sam Rimbey, Mrs. Bill Cork, Frank Gorney and the Muech family.

Rev. Wright preached the dedicatory sermon and Rev. G. H. McLachlan became the church’s first pastor.

“If this were a fairy tale instead of a history it might be said the church lived happily ever after,” Rainey said in his history.

Sadly within a year of its construction (May 16,1906) the building was destroyed by fire, and four-year-old Elvin Rimbey died in the blaze.

Another church was built within six months. That church is now the Seventh day Adventist Church.

An addition was built to the present Church of the Nazarene in 1980.

Rev. Rainey said early leaders like the Rimbeys, the Thomas Wrights, the Starozik, Webb and Pregoda families, the George McCracken’s, the Mert and Phena Challands and the Max Vliets left a great legacy to which those celebrating this centenary year are deeply indebted.

“Children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren have been deeply committed to Rimbey Nazarene Church including Rod Challand, Vera Webb and Jack Webb.

“As we move into our second one hundred years our challenge will be to realize we all must embrace the vision that we are called unto holiness, called to salt and light, called to proclaim the good news of the gospel with the same fervor and conviction as these early pioneers and leaders,” said Rev. Rainey.

Anniversary:The Blindman River Ladies club celebrated 80th Anniversary May 28 at the Blindman River Hall. The long-time members reminisced about days gone by. passing truck. The truck failed to stop at the scene and continued driving northbound. Rimbey RCMP investigated the incident and requested help from the public by sending out the descriptors of the suspect vehicle to the Rimbey & District Crime Watch Association and Gull Lake North Citizens On Patrol. Two days later, a member of Rimbey & District Crime Watch located the suspect vehicle in Rimbey and notified the RCMP. The truck was seized and examined by the RCMP’s Forensic Ident Section out of Red Deer. Charges are pending at this time.

On June 5 between 5:30 and 6 a.m., unknown individuals attempted to steal the ATM inside the Servus Credit Union on the corner of 50th Ave. and 51st St. in Rimbey.

The suspects backed up a truck to the front doors and ripped out the ATM using a chain attached to the truck.

This matter is under investigation, and the RCMP is requesting assistance from the public in identifying the suspects. The thieves failed to get what they had come for, but they caused extensive damage to the ATM. There have also been two separate thefts of marine outboard motors over the past week. A Mercury 15 horsepower outboard was stolen off a boat at the Parkland Beach Marina, and a Yamaha 15 horsepower outboard was stolen from the shore at Sunset Legion campground. In order to deter thieves from helping themselves to your property, please lock up your valuables or take them with you.

Keynote speaker, Lori Sigurdson, Minister of Seniors and Housing said the venerable Parkland Manor will give way to a new lodge by 2017. The new lodge shows our government’s commitment to providing quality accommodation for our seniors in the communities where they have lived so long.

Sigurdson commended Rimoka Housing Foundation for its hard work to get the project off the ground.

She also thanked Ponoka County for donating the land for the new lodge and its commitment to seniors.

“At the new lodge, residents will enjoy larger rooms, full in-suite washrooms and a home protected by upto-date fire and safety systems. It will provide comfort for residents and peace of mind for their families and loved ones. I wish everyone the best as the new lodge project moves forward. I am looking forward to the day it opens and this area’s seniors have a great new home.”

McLauchlin punctuated his speech with the word, ‘finally.’

“When we got the funding,” I said, “finally,” today when we held the sod turning ceremony, I said, “finally” and when we hold the ribbon cutting I will say, ‘finally,’ one last time.

McLauchlin thanked the speakers for their loyalty.

“People know projects like this take a long time and through it all the community as a whole has stood by us. I would like to thank all you folk for being so supportive.”

The mayor echoed McLauchlin’s words.

“Thank you to the people that are here and thank you to all our partners who helped.”

Shannon Boyce-Campbell, director of FCSS in Ponoka was the MC for the event, organized by Rimbey FCSS. “When there’s work to be done, talk doesn’t mean much to seniors,” she said.

Kelly Wagar from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation also spoke.

“This is the favourite part of my job,” he said.

“Congratulations.”

Mayor Rick Pankiw thanked the seniors and all the partners who were involved with making the project happen from the onset.

“Thank you to the people that are here and all our partners.”

He gave special tribute to the Rimoka board chairman.

“Without Paul we wouldn’t have gotten this far. He is the driving force behind it.”

Derek Keller, area manager for Rimbey Hospital & Care Centre and Rimbey & Winfield Home Care from Alberta Health Services also spoke briefly at the ceremonies.

Christine Hedges gave an overview of the history of Rimbey following the speeches.

BY TREENA MIELKE A sod turning event held June 6 marked the beginning of a new affordable housing option for seniors in Rimbey.

The 63-unit Parkland Manor is to be replaced by a new 80-unit lodge.

More than $11.1 million for the project came from the governments of Canada and Alberta through the investment in the Affordable Housing Agreement.

The Province of Alberta provided an additional $2.1 million to the project through the social housing corporation.

The new 80-unit lodge will include an on-site kitchen, dining areas and activity spaces as well as space for support services.

There are four stairwell exits from the second floor.

Residents can be moved from one wing to another if there is a fire as there are firewalls. There is also a full sprinkler system, so the possibility of a fire is remote.

The cost of living in the new lodge will be based on income. Residents will be charged according to 30 per cent of their income, but fees will be capped at approximately $1,450 monthly. The cost per couple per month with a minimum income is $2,200.

There will be Internet access.

Another Rimbey family has been touched by the unseen hand of a grave illness that is causing them great stress, coupled with a huge financial burden.

Patricia Jones, who has suffered with breast cancer that spread to her lungs, bones and her skin, has now been diagnosed with multiple metastatic tumors in her brain.

The medical system in Canada is not offering any more treatments except radiation.

The family has found a clinic in Mexico offering an alternate cancer treatment that may help save her life.

The cost to attend this clinic is $53,000 and that does not include airfare.

To help surpass this incredible financial barrier, Patricia’s daughter, Carley Jones has started a ‘go fund me’ page.

Reaching out to others for help is not something her parents would do unless desperate measures were needed, said Jones.

“My mom is the most caring, kind and genuine person I have ever met. She has helped so many people from family

to random strangers,” said Carly. “She puts everyone before herself and never asks for anything in return. My dad, Darren, has not been working due to a slow down in the oil industry.

Normally, Patricia and Darren would not ask for charitable donations. They are usually the first people to donate,” added Carly.

Darren Jones said the outpouring of help that has come in already humbles him.

“The oil patch has been my main income for the last 30 years and lately it’s been very slow. Carving has kept the bills paid. But like most (people) in Alberta it’s a tough go.”

The family is hoping to raise as much money within the next two weeks as possible so Patricia can begin treatment.

“Please join Patricia’s Platoon and help us kick this cancer for good,” said Carly.

Terry Lynn Forrest passed away on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at the age of 59, surrounded by her loving family.

DURETTE It is with profound sadness that our family announces the passing of J. Maurice “Moe” Durette of Rimbey, Alberta.

Moe passed away with his family by his side, at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Friday, June 3, 2016 at the age of 78 years, after a very courageous battle with cancer. He was a loving husband and father, and an amazing grandfather.

Moe was born in Campbellton, New Brunswick to Paul and Stella Durette. He moved his family from New Brunswick to Calgary, Alberta in 1969. It was there that he began a career in the roofing industry, and would go on to become a partowner of a roofing company. Moe retired at the age of 64 years, and moved to Gull Lake where he had built a cottage for his retirement. Although it was his intention to retire, he didn’t, and instead started a small renovation company with his son. They enjoyed working together and were extremely busy doing renovations in Rimbey and surrounding areas. Moe and his wife, Kathleen eventually moved into Rimbey, and even though he handed over the company to his son, Moe still worked doing odd jobs and renovations for numerous people. He was very active in the community through the Rimbey Lions Club, and spent many hours volunteering. He enjoyed playing guitar and singing, and joined friends to perform at the hospital, as well as at Parkland Manor.

Moe will be lovingly remembered and extremely missed by his beloved wife of 57 years, Kathleen “Kat”; and his four children: Juanita (Robert) Neubert of Red Deer; Laura (Robby) Goritschnig of Rimbey; Raymond (Brenda) Durette of Red Deer; and Noble-Lee (Roger) Kendrick of Calgary. Moe adored his grandchildren: Ashley (Brad) Durette, Tyler and Jarod Goritschnig, Nicole and Abbygale Kendrick, Brittany (Mat) Ponto, and Brad (Kelly) Ponto; in addition to his great grandchildren: Kobe, Noah, Bauer, and Addalyn. He leaves behind his dog, Shanook who adored him and was always by his side. Moe will also be remembered and missed by his siblings: Rita (Lori) Drage of Parksville, B.C.; Alice (Raymond) Blackie and Omar (Myrtle) Durette, all of Calgary; Helen (Ola) Thibeault, Derek (Bridget) Durette, and Paul Durette, all of Campbellton, New Brunswick; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews, as well as long-time friends. Family and friends were very important to Moe, and he loved nothing more than getting together for BBQ’s and special family dinners. He was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, George and Norbert; and two sisters, Stella Durette and Anita Oakley.

With respect for Moe’s wishes, no formal Funeral Service will be held. A Private Family Gathering will take place at a later date. Cremation took place at the Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Moe’s Memory may be made directly to the Rimbey Lions Club, Box 326, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0.

Mr. Maurice Glenn Moore of Lacombe passed away at the age of 80 years. Maurice was a kind and gentle man, a husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He passed away in the loving arms of his wife, his soul mate and best friend. For 80 years, Maurice loved life and was at one with God in nature! We are so grateful for the memories we shared with him and these memories will live on in our hearts forever. He is survived by his loving wife Patricia, of Lacombe; his five children, of whom he was so very proud: Cheryl (Wade) Morrison of Grande Prairie, Glenn (Shelly) Moore of Debolt, Jennifer (Dr. John) Ogrodniczuk of Vancouver, Shaun (Abby) Metz of Lethbridge, Melissa (Ben) Rogers of Lacombe; 14 cherished grandchildren: Megan, Alex, Kaitlyn, Cooper, Skylar, Mikayla, Ethan, Ariel, Parker, Keziah, Naomi, Ezra, Isaac, Samuel; sister; Lynda (John) Krulak of Athabasca, brothers; Marvin (Fran), Vernon (Joanne), Brian (Cheryl); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. MILLIONS, Charles Gordon Gordon Millions of Rimbey, Alberta passed away peacefully at the Rimbey Care Centre on Monday June 6, 2016 at the age of 78.

Gordon was born on April 5, 1938 in Westlock, Alberta to Victor and Lydia Millions.

Gordon grew up and attended school in Eastend Saskatchewan. He left home at 15 years of age to work as a surveyor on seismic crews. On August 1, 1958 Gordon married his school sweetheart, Verna Korsberg. Together they moved many times throughout Saskatchewan and Alberta before settling in Rimbey where Gordon worked at the Rimbey Gas Plant until his retirement.

Gordon enjoyed life to the fullest, filling his days with baseball, golf, skiing, hockey, sailing, camping. He took great joy in teaching his children and grandchildren how to ski, golf, play ball, and fix things, just to name a few.

During their retirement years Gordon and Verna enjoyed their winters in Arizona where they golfed, enjoyed the sun and socialized with their many friends.

“The Gordon Millions we knew, and will remember, was a wonderful father, grandfather and friend. He lived his life on his own terms, knowing no limits. He worked hard, played hard and loved fiercely. He will be missed so much. Until we meet again …. Dear Dad”.

Gordon will be lovingly remembered by his daughters, Natalie (Rick) Stefanyk of Rimbey; and Carmele (Brian) Schneider also of Rimbey; as well as his eight treasured grandchildren, Kevin Schneider, Colin Stefanyk, Michael Schneider, Janelle Stefanyk (Cory Tennant), Frances Snider (Kyle Snider), Brianna Schneider, Kyle Stefanyk and Alisa Schneider; and his special great granddaughter, Caydence Snider. Gordon is also survived by his brother Alan Millions of Courtenay, BC. Gordon was predeceased by his wife Verna in 2004 and by his brother Bruce Millions and his parents Victor and Lydia Millions.

Don’t do business with a traveling salesman

BY STU SALKELD Summertime is on its way, and so are the travelling salesmen and shady contractors.

This is a problem that, in my opinion, isn’t talked about as much as it should be. I’ve been dealing with these kinds of people throughout my 24 years in journalism and I take pride in shining a light on them every chance I get.

One of the first encounters I had was in 1996 in Fort Macleod, where a senior citizen in town was ripped off by a telemarketer. I know, that’s not a traveling salesman, but same situation as far as I’m concerned. The salesman from Quebec talked this 80 year old lady into buying over $20,000 worth of office supplies.

Another encounter I had was with a vacuum salesman in Fort Macleod. He was a door-to-door type from Calgary, wandering around town harassing everyday working class people. One of these local folks phoned me when I worked at the Macleod Gazette and told me the salesman was

bothering his family every night, dumping dust and dirt on their living room floor and then vacuuming it up. He obviously regretted letting the salesman in, and wanted some help getting rid of him. I agreed. Actually, all it took was myself being in the living room the night this salesman showed up.

He left and wasn’t heard from again.

Another breed of crook that bothers me is the traveler or shady contractor.

These people engage in a variety of work ranging from painting, house repairs and roofing to “asphalt sealant,” which in some cases proves to be nothing more than hot water with black dye in it.

Travelers and shady contractors often claim their prices are much lower than local contractors, and they claim the work is as good as, or better, than the locals.

Don’t you believe either one of those claims.

Firstly, if the contractor performs subpar work, how are you going to find this guy to claim warranty?

Does he even honour a warranty? It’s not unknown for some of these travelers to flee to the U.S. or Australia so their victims can’t find them and that’s not an exaggeration.

As described above with the “asphalt sealant,” some of these travelers and shady contractors charge good money for poor or downright illegal work. Some

of these people may even damage your property and leave you worse off than before they entered the picture.

Then there is the true crook: the one who takes your deposit and immediately disappears. You bet it happens, and it happens every year. The government, police and organizations like the Better Business Bureau get complaints
