Watchful: This watchful fox is one of a family of foxes that have set up housekeeping on the site where the retention pond is to be built for the new senior’s lodge. Stan Cummings, worried about the foxes’ well-being, notified town officials who got in touch with Medicine River Wildlife Centre. A representative was sent out who disturbed the fox hole by shoveling a small amount of dirt out of the hole. She said the disturbance will cause the foxes to vacate their home and seek a new location.

Positive ticketing program goes into effect

BY TREENA MIELKE Sometimes being handed a ticket by a uniformed police officer is not such a bad thing.

Two young men who happened to be wearing helmets when riding their skateboards found this out last Wednesday when they were suddenly approached

by Const. Carman Dutz of the Rimbey RCMP. The constable was carrying a ticket book and he looked like he meant business.

And he did.

“You’ve been caught,” he told thirteen-year-old Evan Barr and twelve-year-old Jaxon Obray.

The boys were understandably quite surprised when they were handed tickets.

Dutz explained that a positive ticketing program is now underway in Rimbey.

“In a nutshell we just look for kids that are being good citizens and we give them a ticket.”

All tickets go into a

monthly draw for a prize.

The program is an effective way to encourage positive behavior among young people, said Dutz.

“We have done the positive ticketing program in every community that I have worked in and it does have the desired effect,” said Dutz. “We always get very positive feedback, as well.”

The positive ticketing program is being sponsored by the town and local businesses.

On May 27, West Country Outreach School recognized the hard work of many students at the school’s annual Graduation and Awards Night at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre.

Ten graduates crossed the stage this year to receive their diplomas.

“After many long years of academic effort and accomplishment, these young ladies reached their goal and deserved the adulation of the friends and family members in attendance. In staying with the theme of their graduation night, they are all ready to touch the sky, said WCOS teacher, David Robertson.

Nineteen awards were handed out to very deserving students. Academic achievement was recognized, as was citizenship, leadership, and many other categories.

by Meyers Norris Penny/BONAVISTA Energy went to Jessica Laczo. Jessica also won the purpose and perseverance award sponsored by Winfield Lions Club JT Glass.

Aylish Anglin won the senior high science award sponsored by Rimbey Medical Clinic. She also won the Social Studies 30-1 award sponsored by Conoco Phillips and the post second award sponsored by Michael’s Studio.

The English 30-1 award sponsored by Nordstrom Dental/Servus Credit Union went to Julia Hilliker.

Katrina Shippy received the senior high student of the year award sponsored by

Rimbey Value Drug Mart/Kinsmen Club of Rimbey and she took the English 30-2 award sponsored by Action Autobody/ Lazer Energy. She also won the Social Studies 30-2 award sponsored by Conoco Phillips.

The outdoor conservation award went to Liam McKeen and it was sponsored by the Rimbey Lions Club. Liam also won the sportsmanship and participation award sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary to the Royal Canadian Legion.

So some of you watch a TV show called Sons of Anarchy, and you believe members of the Hells Angels when they claim to be nothing more than a motorcycle club who donate toys to kids and simply like to hang out and brag about their H.D’s.

And, of course, get targeted by the police for absolutely no reason at all.

The truth is quite different.

The Hells Angels are the preeminent outlaw motorcycle gang in North America (the “one per centers,” meaning the one per cent of motorcycle enthusiasts who engage in criminal activities), well known to have had violent feuds in eastern Canada with another bike gang, and to have had similar feuds south of the border with another gang called the Bandidos, specifically in California.

Later investigation suggests the gunmen were looking to murder someone else and accidentally killed Santos.

Debating the Notley Carbon Tax: it’s like Bill 6 all over again Debating the Notley Carbon Tax: It’s like Bill 6 all over again Last week the NDP government formally introduced Bill 20 in the Legislature, for the first time giving Albertans a detailed look at the proposed Notley Carbon Tax. As our friends in the media have confirmed, Bill 20 is extremely convoluted. Some of the sections in this nearly 100page bill seem to have been lifted from previous legislation and repackaged in a hodgepodge of legalese that raises more questions than it answers.

One major concern constituents have raised with me is the unfair burden associated with increased fuel costs.

When the NDP government took office a little over one year ago, it chose to adopt the 4¢/lite gasoline tax increase imposed by the Progressive Conservatives. I opposed this for several reasons.

Only this time, the policy in question undermines the economy of our entire province.

How to paint cherry blossoms with a little help from your friends We have a cherry tree in our back yard.

For a brief moment in time, the tree was all pink and covered with cherry blossoms, their delicate lattice-like beauty so lovely; it almost took your breath away.

I’m not sure if it was a really strong wind, or just simply a matter of time, but suddenly the cherry blossoms were gone, done, finished.

On The Other Side But, alas, however, I have had little time to bemoan the loss of the cherry blossoms, outside, because I have an abundance of cherry blossoms inside.

Actually, it’s getting kind of annoying.

So, how did this happen?

It all began with a painting party.

This is how the party worked.

First we all came in and sat down in front of a blank canvas.

Beside us were little trays of paint and two paintbrushes, one slightly smaller than the other.

We were told the bigger one was called ‘big mama.’

Then this fairy godmother wearing blue jeans, a painting apron and a smile showed up. She held up a pretty painting of pink cherry blossoms hanging on a branch that was stretched out over a dark body of water.

The painting was lovely.

She waved the painting around, kind of like a magic wand, and assures us all, that hidden inside every one of us, is a painter just waiting to get out and pick up a paintbrush and create something beautiful.

In other words, we too, could paint cherry blossoms, clustered together on a branch, lovely little blossoms, all dancing and waving, some of them in the air and others floating about on water.

And we could do it before the clock struck 10 p.m.

The fairy godmother seemed all relaxed and confident that each of us, even those who had never put a paintbrush to canvas, could do this.

I sat on my chair, my back ramrod stiff, my left hand clutching the paintbrush fiercely, ready to attach my blank canvasses with great determination, coupled with absolutely no skill.

To my left was my daughter’s mother-in-law, well known for her creativity and imagination; on my right was my husband, whose artwork graces several of the walls in our home.

At another table were my daughters, both of whom have artistic talent that has shown up many times over the years.

Me? Never!

I felt totally inept and quite out of my league.

I’m not sure when it happened, but sometime during all this chatter about cherry blossoms and waving of paint brushes, any latent artistic ability I happened to possess actually broke through all my negative self-talk, and grabbed a paintbrush.

Before I knew it I was having a great time, welding the big mama paintbrush with gusto, dabbing here and there, creating little pink dabs, known in some circles, especially this particular circle as cherry blossoms.

And, somewhere along the way, I actually fell in love with my own painting, at least, I did, until my girls told me to get over myself.

I did. I humbly hushed myself, but still I was amazed that with a little imagination, you could totally tell that my painting truly was cherry blossoms on a branch and sort of floating in the air and on the water.

And, while I will never be an artist, I have learned that with a little help from my friends and a stranger, who was simply a friend waiting to happen, I could achieve something I was firmly convinced I was not capable of.

Meanwhile, I now have cherry blossoms paintings in my house created by myself, my husband and my daughter.

And, weirdly enough, they are all quite lovely. It’s just that there are three of them which seems a bit of an over kill, don’t you think?

Race time: Devin Mielke from Meridian Beach was one of over 450 runners in the 10 kilometer race at the Woody’s RV race held recently. Mielke and his wife, Heather, both competed in the run. The couple enjoyed the run, but said the cold and rainy weather made running conditions much more difficult. Heather Mielke also competed in a 10 K run in Victoria, B.C. last weekend.

Former Rimbey student graduates from Harvard Law School cum laude

BY TREENA MIELKE When Shane Anderson graduated from Rimbey High School in 2004 he certainly didn’t have a crystal ball to peer into his future.

He probably would have been more than a little surprised if he did.

Anderson recently graduated cum laude from Harvard Law School. Presently he is in Boston studying for his bar exam.

Sitting among the crowd at the graduation ceremony was Anderson’s mother Roxanne Anderson and his grandmother Evelyn Schrader from Rimbey.

It goes without saying, both women were very proud of their young man.

“I cried, I laughed, yes, I am extremely proud,” said his mom, Roxanne Anderson, a Grade 2 teacher at Bluffton School.

In a telephone interview, Anderson reflected on growing up in Rimbey and the chain of events that led a small town boy to eventually study in the hallowed halls of an Ivy League university such Harvard.

Anderson put down roots in Rimbey, living in a house on 47th Street with his siblings and parents, while his grandparents and an uncle lived close by. He remembers spending many hours at his grandparents’ home on days his parents left early for work.

As a teen his tastes were somewhat unconventional and, one day, after stumbling upon some Japanese music online, he decided he wanted to learn the language.

Shane Anderson, formerly from Rimbey, graduated recently from Harvard Law School. His mom, Roxanne Anderson and his grandma, Evelyn Schrader, both from Rimbey attended the ceremonies.

Rimbey alumnus graduates Harvard continued from page 8 And so he did.

“I was into electronic music back then. And I heart an artist with music that was an interesting combination of electronic and pop. After listening to that music I really wanted to learn the language so I decided to teach it to myself.

As far as his future, the young man had no plan that was written in stone.

“I didn’t have any grandiose plan. In fact, when I was in Grade 11, I was worried about what I would be doing in the future. What if I don’t get accepted into university?”

After graduating second in his class from Rimbey high school, Anderson went on to the University of Calgary graduating with distinction with a degree in electrical engineering.

He worked in Japan and Calgary doing engineering for several years and also traveled to Japan where he taught English.

While Anderson enjoyed

the career path he had embarked on, he knew in his heart he wanted something more. Never one to settle for second best, he decided to pursue another career dream.

He applied to multiple schools including Harvard Law School and the University of Toronto to study law.

He received an email notifying him that he had been accepted at Harvard while flying to his brother’s home in Calgary for Christmas just over three years ago.

“I was somewhat surprised, myself, (at being accepted into Harvard)” he said. “There is a misconception out there that only the privileged get in.”

Attending Harvard University has been an interesting and challenging experience.

“It is a challenging environment. You are among driven and very bright people and there is a lot of pressure to perform well.”

Anderson has not only fit in well at Harvard, he has

excelled. And now with his graduating degree in hand, he is ready to move on.

He still doesn’t have a crystal ball to foresee the future, but on the other hand, his Harvard law degree has opened new doors for him offering endless possibilities. He has already been hired by Ropes & Gray LLP, a prestigious law firm which has offices all over the world including Palo Alto in Silicon Valley, California and Tokyo.

Because of their connections, he could find himself back in Japan or he could spend time in the beautiful state of California.

Despite his personal successes, Anderson remains humble and grateful for the way his life has transpired.

Enjoying the moment, staying engaged and interested and following his passion has helped him along his career path so far.

No doubt, these traits will continue to be his trademarks as he continues his journey.

BY JUNE NORVILA One of the bigger items donated to the Bentley Municipal Library fundraiser, as a silent auction item, was a 30-second shopping spree at the local Bentley grocery store.

That was how Joseph Lee, owner of Bentley Select AG Foods, chose to support the local fundraiser.

The winning bidder of that item was Caleb Schmidt with a bid of $110.00 that went directly to the library.

On May 25, wife Kim Schmidt made her 30-second dash, picking up as much groceries as she could in that short time. The restriction was it was to be groceries only (no meat, etc.)

“We had a plan,” she said. “We wanted to get things that we actually use regularly at home.”

Some people had gathered at the store to cheer her on. The 30-second count down went very quickly.

In the end, after checking through the till, Kim had managed to gather up just over $160.00 worth of groceries.

The winners were both the local library and the local Schmidt family.

The library is thankful to everyone who donated to, bid, attended, and helped at their silent auction fundraiser in late April. It was in conjunction with a dance and meal at the Blindman Valley Ag Centre on April 23.

Bentley school happenings and events SUBMITTED

COIN RACE FOR FORT MAC The Leadership Team challenged all the classrooms to a coin race to raise money for the victims of the Fort Mac wildfire. The students brought loose coin to their class col-

lection. The class that brought the most coin would win a pizza party. However, there was a catch. Students could sabotage the collections in other classrooms by putting bills into the collection cans.

The value of the bills counted against the total value of the coins for the purposes of the

race.

As it turned out, the Grade 8 class used strategy to win the race.

They brought most of their money in on the last day of the five-day race. They had a net value of just under $700 in coin. The poor Grade 5 class had been leading for the couple days before and got inundated

with bills in their can, to the tune of almost $350 just in bills! Their net total was about $80.

The race was a huge success as the students raised just over $4300 in 5 days. The Leadership Team decided to donate 25 percent of the total to the trust fund set up at Servus Credit Union for a former student whose family lost everything in the fire.

The remainder is going to the Red Cross. This activity was a wonderful show of compassion from the Bentley community. Thank you to everyone who supported it!

SCHOOL REACH The team made up of Austin Siebold, Cahill Martin, Evan Ford and Kurtis Lautenbach qualified for the provincial tournament in Edmonton on April 18.

They played five round robin games against tough teams from schools like Strathcona Tweedsmuir and Webber Academy. It was a great experience for the students, and they came home with the Spirit Award because of the great sportsmanship they displayed throughout the tournament.

School REACH is the same program as the old Reach for the Top program that used to be on TV. Teams of 4 students compete against each other in a Jeopardy-like contest. Bentley School had three Junior teams this year. The teams competed in three tournaments in Stettler and Ponoka in February and March.

Bentley Generals to relocate to Lacombe

The Bentley Generals, winner of the 2016 Allan Cup, will relocate to Lacombe for the 2016/2017 season and become The Lacombe Generals. The team will be based out of the Lacombe Sports and Leisure Complex.

SUBMITTED The City of Lacombe has announced that the Bentley Generals Men’s Senior AAA Hockey Club has entered into an agreement with the municipality to relocate to Lacombe for the 2016/2017 season.

“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome the Lacombe Generals to their new home,” said Mayor Steve Christie. “I have no doubt that this celebrated

Chinook Hockey League franchise will continue to entertain and delight fans with their brand of elite-level hockey for years to come. This move will also provide local businesses with some needed economic spin-off benefits, and serve to further enhance community spirit in Lacombe.”

“The entire Generals organization is excited about the future of our hockey club and our new

home in Lacombe,” said Jeff McInnis, the Generals’ general manager. “We know that the community accepts us wholeheartedly, judging by the great success we’ve had this past season with our playoff games in Lacombe.

As well, our partnerships with other ice users such as Lacombe Minor Hockey and the Lacombe Figure Skating Club have proven to be a home-run for all concerned.”

This has been an impressive season for the Spartans. After going undefeated in league play, the Spartans beat Lindsay Thurber High School 22-12 to secure the

Central Alberta League Championship. “This was huge for us,” says head coach Ceara Newman, “We’ve only ever won the League Championship once before, in 2011.

Considering that we are a Tier III team, and had to beat out two Tier I teams, we were ecstatic.” In rugby, Tier I is made up of high schools with populations greater than 1,250; the Rimbey High School boasts a population of only 192, so this is no small feat.”

The team made up of Austin Siebold, Cahill Martin, Evan Ford and Kurtis Lautenbach qualified for the provincial REACH tournament in Edmonton on April 18. They played five round robin games against tough teams from schools like Strathcona Tweedsmuir and Webber Academy. It was a great experience for the students, and they came home with the Spirit Award because of the great sportsmanship they displayed throughout the tournament. School REACH is the same program as the old Reach for the Top program that used to be on TV. Teams of four students compete against each other in a Jeopardy-like contest. Bentley School had three junior teams this year. The teams competed in three tournaments in Stettler and Ponoka in February and March. In the back row are J’lyn Bickford, Lee Varty (coach), Austin Siebold, Evan Ford, Kurtis Lautenbach, Cahill Martin, Talalynn Johnson, Steve Lush (coach). In the front row are Taylor Fedorchuk, Kaylee Leibham, Hannah Dojahn, Paige Skjonsberg, Kassidy Smith. Missing is Georgia Hazlett.

LOURANCE, Alfred HOLMEN Gladys Holmen of Bentley, Alberta passed away at the Rimbey Continuing Care Center on Monday May 30, 2016 at the age of 93 years.

Gladys was born September 15, 1922 in Lockhart, Alberta.

In 1921, her parents William and Helen (Nellie) Jaffray with their five children had immigrated to Canada from Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

Gladys married Ernest Holmen on January 28, 1942. They had been married for 52 years when Ernest passed away.

Gladys was very active in the community. She was a Charter Member of the Royal Purple for 55 years ago.

For many curlers, she was known as the “coffee lady” for the Bentley Senior Curling Club. Although she didn’t ride horses, she was also a member for the Sunset Riding Club, helping with the pancake breakfasts, poker rallies, etc.

Gladys will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her two daughters; Kay (Jim) Spears of Vernon, and Sandra (Darrell) of Peace River, by her two sons; Garry (Deneice) of Bentley and John (Lisa) of Bentley, her sister Jean Henderson of Oliver and sister-in-law Elsie Jaffray; in addition to the numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of friends. Gladys was predeceased by her husband Ernest Holmen, in 1994, one son Brian, in 2012, an infant daughter Patricia, 1947, four brothers; Willie, Jimmy, Sandy and Harry, four sisters; Helen Winter, Kathleen Ostlund, Beth Solberg and Bella Jaffray.

A public funeral service in celebration of Gladys’ life was held at the Bentley Community Church on Monday, June 06, 2016 at 2:00 pm, with Pastor Shealagh McClelland officiating and interment followed in the Vig Cemetery.

Old timers reunion to recognize class of ‘66 and Calkins family

BY TREENA MIELKE It’s time once again for the annual Rimbey and District Reunion and the organizing committee is laying out the red carpet for each and everyone who attends.

“We would like to extend a hearty welcome. It doesn’t matter if you came here yesterday, have been here a hundred years or simply are coming back to visit. You are more than welcome,” said president Murray Ormberg. “Don’t let the name, ‘old timers’ scare you off.”

This year the class of ’66 will be recognized.

“This is to include everyone that started school in 1954 and attended Rimbey schools. You don’t have had to graduate from Rimbey or graduated at all to be part of the class of ’66,” said Ormberg.

This year the old-timers association is recognizing the W.E. (Bill) Calkins family, who homesteaded at Lockhart in 1900. Local MP Blaine Calkins is part of the Calkins family.

The reunion kicks off on Sat., June 18 at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre with registration to begin at noon. The registration fee has been lowered this year and a cash concession will be available from noon to 4 p.m. Free coffee will be available.

A cash bar will also be set up at 4:30 p.m. and run throughout the evening.

Supper will be held at 5:30 p.m. with a dance to follow.

A pancake breakfast will be held at Pas Ka Poo Park from 8 to 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Last year close to 300 people attended the 60th anniversary reunion of the Rimbey & District Old Timers’ Association held at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre on June 20.

The class of ’65 was featured and a good representation gathered on stage for introductions and a brief message.

The Langmuir family was recognized and a power point presentation was given by Walter Langmuir’s daughter, Darlene.
