Nations collide at Furusiyya Nations Cup On Friday, June 3, Thunderbird Show Park hosts a show jumping competition that has a true international flavour.

This year’s event will be tricky, Pack said, as the 2016 Rio Olympics start Aug. 5.

“It depends on who has their

[Olympic] trials where,” Pack said. “Because nobody has designated this as a trial, that means people will be coming here in between the trials.”

The Nations Cup is new ground for Thunderbird. Its signature event each year comes

every August, with the $135,600 CSI3-W Longines World Cup Qualifier scheduled this summer for Aug. 28.

“We have a few shows in between but these are our two premier events of the year,” Pack said.

Thunderbird president invites all to Nations Cup President Jane Tidball said she’s ‘absolutely thrilled’ about a highcalibre event coming to town on June 3.

hunderbird Show Park president Jane Tidball is accustomed to welcoming world-class show jumping talent to Langley’s 85-acre equestrian centre.

Even so, she and the rest of her team are new to the Furusiyya Nations Cup, which will pit eight nations against each other June 3.

Hosting this competition – which is similar to golf’s Ryder Cup in which each rider represents his or her respective nation – is a huge feather in Thunderbird’s riding cap.

The event only comes to Canada once a year.

“We are absolutely thrilled about being the host venue for Canada’s 2016 Nation Cup,” Tidball said. “We have established ourselves as one of the top show jumping facilities in

North America and now we have the long-awaited opportunity to showcase the top national team horses and riders from all over the world. Hosting an event of this level has been a goal of ours for a long time and we are very excited to see it become a reality.”

Now that Thunderbird has established itself as a Furusiyya Nations Cup stop, the heavy lifting begins.

Tidball and her team are ready – after all, they are well versed at hosting international show jumping competitions.

“I don’t think the planning ever stops. We run eight major show jumping competitions a year, and each of them involves a huge number of people coming together to pull them off,” Tidball said.

The difference with hosting the Furusiyya Nations Cup is that Thunderbird expects the competition to be a bigger draw for non-equestrian fans, due to the international prestige of the event, Tidball explained.

“In addition,” she continued, “it is the last opportunity for the Canadian team to qualify for the final Nations Cup in Barcelona.

We’re looking forward to giving Team Canada as much support as possible.”

“What makes show jumping so exciting is that two athletes – a human and a horse – have to train and work together to jump 16 or more obstacles that are higher than a Volkswagen bug,” she said.

“Riders and horses develop such a strong working relationship that each knows what the other is planning before they do it, and they can communicate with each other with only the slightest movement that spectators may not even notice.”

Elite rider honed her craft at Thunderbird Wellington, Fla., resident Tiffany Foster hopes to return to Thunderbird Show Park for the Furusiyya Nations Cup.

Foster moved to Langley with her mom and sister when she was 14, and worked for Brent and Laura Balisky from the ages of 13 to 21.

She left Langley in 2005 to work for Olympic gold medalist Eric Lamaze and Torrey Pines Stable and has been back at Thunderbird twice since then to compete.

Canada qualified as a nation for the Olympics with a gold medal at the Pan American Games last year and Foster currently has a certificate of capab-

ility on four on her horses.

If she competes on the world’s largest sporting stage in Rio, it will be a culmination of more than two decades of hard work.

Foster started riding horses at the age of eight at the North Shore Equestrian Centre and

then began getting more serious at 12, when she started training with the Baliskys.

“I rode my whole junior career mainly in the hunters and equitation, so it was when I moved to Eric and Torrey Pines Stable that my career as a show jumper really got some traction,” Foster recalled.

It was there where Foster met Carlene and Andy Ziegler, of Artisan Farms.

“That’s when things really took off,” Foster shared. “I always knew that this was what I wanted to do, but having such supportive and generous people along the way is what has made getting to this level possible.”

She exploded onto the international show jumping scene in 2011 and made her Canadian equestrian team debut aboard Southvwind VDL in the $350,000 BMO Nations’ Cup at the Spruce Meadows “Masters” tournament, helping Canada earn a secondplace finish.

Foster has now represented Canada in 21 Nations Cup competitions worldwide, including Buenos Aires, Argentina; Barcelona, Spain; and Aachen, Germany, as well as at the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France. continued on page B12…

Perfecting the pace vital to show jumping success The key to speed is starting on a 12 mph pace, minimum, says U.S. show jumping team veteran Susie Hutchison.

“R

iding under pace is probably the biggest mistake people make in the ring,” says U.S. show jumping team veteran Susan (Susie) Hutchison of Temecula, Calif.

“Most people don’t get their horse in front of their leg enough and establish enough speed on the circle prior to the first jump, so they’re under 12 miles an hour. They get to the first jump so they’re under 12 miles an hour. They get to the first jump and don’t give themselves any options because they’re too slow. They chip the jump, have to run up the line, and they’ve already lost the class.”

She says a course should be started on a 12 mph pace, at minimum.

“Most hunter and equitation courses are set on a 12-foot stride. If you get a clock in your head as to where a 12-ft. stride is, then that puts you at 12 miles an hour,” continued the three-time Olympian.

“Figuring out where 12 miles an hour is will help you to know where 10 miles an hour is and where 15 miles an hour is, which should be your rate of speed for a jump off or a shorter time allowed period. Or if you’re jumping into a tight in and out, you want to be at 10 miles an hour versus 12.”

Hutchison demonstrates how to perfect pace with this simple riding exercise: Step 1 – set markers Measure 360 yards around the ring and tap start and finish markers on the rail. The markers should be easily visible from atop the horse and across the ring.

Step 2 – time the distance Using a watch, time how long it takes to cover that distance at the canter.

(You may want to recruit someone on the ground to help.) You should be able to do it in one minute if you’re on a 12-ft. stride. If you’re a second too fast or a second too slow, adjust the pace and try again.

“I prefer to see a rider err on the side of too fast than too slow,” she says.

Step 3 – feel the rhythm “It’s amazing how many people can’t canter 12 miles an hour without jumps coming in their way. They get nervous and want to canter too slowly,” says Hutchison.

“Practise a 12-mile-an-hour pace on the flat, you’ll loosen up and start to feel a little more of a rhythm of the stride as you canter around the ring. It

also allows you to concentrate on what are, to me, more important aspects – the balance of the horse and keeping the canter step even all the way around.”

Step 4 – aim for exact “If you’re a second slow, that doesn’t sound like much. Well, if I am beat in a jumper class by a whole second, I’ve been beat a lot! Try to get as close to a minute as possible.”

Step 5 – experiment on different horses Every horse’s stride feels different.

If you’re on a pony versus a 17-hand Warmblood, the pony is going to feel like it’s going much faster than then the Warmblood – even though they’re going the same speed.

“It’s like watching a sports car and a semi-tractor trailer go down the road,” says Hutchison. “They are both going 55 miles an hour. But the wheels on the sports car are going to look like they are traveling much faster than the wheels on the semi. The same thing applies when you are looking at a pony or a horse.”

Step 6 – practise!

The beauty of this exercise is it’s something you can practise on your own without a trainer and can’t do too much harm to your horse. Keep at it until you perfect it!”

Since she was a young girl, Foster has been drawn to show jumping, which she says is an appealing sport on many levels.

“I think the connection between rider and horse is my favourite part but a good jump-off is so thrilling and the added element of risk makes it very exciting,” Foster said.

“He has a lot of personality and he is very dependable with a ton of scope and he’s very quick for a big horse,” Foster said. “I absolutely adore him.”

Foster also has “a very exciting group of young horses that are starting to come into their prime,” she believes.

“I am really looking forward to the next few years with them.”

An immediate goal is to represent Canada in Rio this summer.

Down the road, Foster hopes to compete in the 2018 World Equestrian Games, taking place at the Bromont Olympic Equestrian Park in Bromont/Montreal.

“In the meantime, I would like to continue to climb the world rankings,” Foster said.

“And, of course, an Olympic gold medal would be nice.”

F

or the hunter ring, I am a traditionalist.

This division originated from the hunt field.

Classic attire is timeless.

I don’t like to see flashy, blingy, or the latest fad mar the overall look of the horse and their performance.

That means conservative coloured hunt coats, beige breeches, beautifully polished boots, traditional spurs, dark gloves, and helmets without obvious adornments are a must.

Navy and hunter green (which are extremely popular at the moment) coats are always in vogue.

For summer, I don’t mind lighter shades of blues, greys, browns, and greens. Black is always okay, though a bit more formal in my opinion.

June 2014 Langley’s Brian Morton earned himself a $55,000 payday when he won the CSI 2-W Purica Recovery EQ World Cup Qualifier.

“The course was very well designed, there were many difficulties,” noted Rodriguez.

August 2012 There were a whole lot of Fellers at Sunday’s $100,000 Canaccord Genuity World Cup. World Cup champion Rich Fellers advanced with both Flexible and Colgan Cruise, while his wife Shelley went clear on Revenge.

With just five horse-and-rider teams in the final, the crowd was on their feet to see Fellers post the only double clear rounds and win the day.

“I thought the first round was very well done,” Rich Fellers said. “Alan [Wade’s] course suited the field. The jump-off was a typical jump-off – you gotta run, you gotta jump, and you gotta leave them up.”

August 2010 North American show jumpers hit the grass for a share of $75,000 and qualifying points in the Keg Steakhouse & Bar World Cup at Thunderbird Show Park.

In the end it was the rider in the red jacket, California’s Ashlee Bond, whose big smile said it all.

“I thought it would be a great course for Cadett because he’s been jumping really big and everything was on a forward stride,” explained Bond, who took first place.

Bond was third into the ring, riding ahead of one of the best speed riders in the world, Rich Fellers.

“I knew who was behind me and there was a lot of people in the jump-off so I had to lay it down,” Bond said.
