I think one of the things is that Berwicks in general have gone out of their way to put staffs together that include fine-dining chefs and with that in mind, that allows us to showcase what we’re capable of doing. An event like this creates an energy that we can put forward,

“I think there’s a lot of diversity in background and I think that basically creates collaboration,” he said.

MacDonald was on the founding board of the festival and he was chosen as one of six featured chefs for this year’s gala dinner, which will be the final one.

The team will be creating a Thai sweet and sour dish using tuna loin for the gala dinner. Earlier this spring, they started preserving limes so they can make a relish out of them, and they were planning to make a slaw with Thai vegetables.

They were going to dredge the tuna loin with a peppery dredge and sear it off on barbecues.

MacDonald jokes that he has been cooking “since pterodactyls were flying.” He has worked for Berwick facilities for almost 10 years and has also had a couple of his own restaurants, including in Victoria and Courtenay.

Ramm has worked at Berwick by the Sea for about six months, and before that, she worked in camps in northern Alberta and at Salmon Point Restaurant and Pub.

“What you end up doing in things like this is in many cases, you are choosing from your stock of dishes that you normally do, but it’s a bit more fun to conceptualize and to try to put something together,” said MacDonald. “So I looked up a recipe, I entirely changed it up and basically took the ingredients that were in the recipe and mucked around, played around until I came up with something that was right.”

Ramn and Greenwood are both really looking forward to the experience.

“It will be the first time that I’ve ever done anything like that in such a large scale and professional situation,” said Ramn.

This will be Greenwood’s first time taking part in something of this scale as well. “It sounded like it would be a lot of fun to do,” she said. “I like doing a lot of catering events and being with people.”

The BC Shellfish Growers Association Annual Gala Dinner takes place June 17 at Filberg Heritage Lodge and Park in Comox. After a raw oyster bar reception, guests sit down to a six-course meal and each course is created by a different BC chef and paired with a BC wine or craft beer.

Along with MacDonald and his team, this year’s featured chefs are

“We’re really pleased that Matt and his team are together in doing this and we’re very proud that they’re involved in this and that they’re allowing Berwick to be involved in this process as well by allowing us to test it out,” said Wendy Mayers, Berwick by the Sea’s community relations manager.

The gala dinner is part of the BC Shellfish and Seafood Festival, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and will take place June 9 to 19 in the Comox Valley. A variety of events are planned for the 11 days, including salmon farm tours in Campbell River.

cultural identity Junior Henderson is doing his part to keep his culture alive, because he knows how close it was to being lost forever.

The eldest son of the eldest son of Master Carver Sam Henderson – a name known around the world for his cultural art done right here in and around Campbell River – Junior’s life has been surrounded by his people’s art and culture since birth, and while it was never “forced” on him, he says, it was natural that he would absorb it organically and make it an important aspect of his life.

His father, Henderson says, “went away when he was young to go learn his culture and learn who he was and where he was really from. He knew he wasn’t just from here in Campbell River, and he wanted to learn the language, as well.”

And so as Henderson watched his father make button blankets, help with potlatches, and engage with his culture in any and every way he could, it just kind of rubbed off on him.

“I was brought up in that life. I grew up seeing that culture, being surrounded by it, having it just be part of life. I was dragged, I guess you could say, to all these things, and I didn’t really have an

As he was about to graduate from high school, like many others, he was trying to figure out how he’d make a living, “and my uncle was doing pretty well as a carver, and I knew my grandfather was a renowned artist worldwide, and I kinda wanted to just be like him.”

So when, after a couple of years working in forestry, his uncle took him under his wing in a protege/mentor kind of role. That was 20 or so years ago, now, and he’s never looked back.

Kwakiutl Bear Pole his grandfather carved as part of the Route of Totems Centennial project in 1966, and had stood overlooking the strait at the Museum at Campbell River for years.

Over the years since its creation, however, issues of ownership and responsibility for its upkeep and maintenance became clouded, so it, unfortunately, deteriorated beyond repair despite attempts to restore it, and Henderson was commissioned to replace it.

While he gets excited about every project he works on, “this one’s a little extra exciting,” he admits.

“I guess at this point, I’ve devoted more than half my life to be like Sam Henderson – who I hardly knew,” he says, looking down at the large log outside the carver’s shed out on the spit that he’s skinning and preparing to begin work on, giving it a loving pat with the palm of his hand.

“My grandfather was fortunate to be a part of that group that revived the culture from the era when you weren’t allowed to celebrate it,” he says, “and now here I am replacing a part of that legacy that he brought back into people’s lives, in a way.”

his art to express his cultural identity is just the way Henderson lives. After he learned to carve, under his uncle’s tutelage, he wanted more.

“Carving, singing, dancing, I got involved in all of it,” he says. He wanted to, as he puts it, be “a cultural person.”

“I believe in a lot of different things that are spiritual,” Henderson says, “but that was just something truly magical.”

So he’s still at it.

“Culture is a way of life,” he says. “It’s not something you walk into and out of.

It’s something you’re a part of. I try my best to be a role model – that person that somebody can look up to.”

But it’s not easy to live that way, he says, but, as he says, “you have to work at it, like anything else in life that’s worth doing, I guess. But I’ve devoted my life to it.”

But there was a time, Henderson says, “not too long ago,” when he felt like giving up on the carving aspect of his life.

“The market was really bad, and I was, like, oh, man, I gotta get a real job,” he says with a laugh. But not long after that thought started creeping into his mind – consuming him, really – he was up in Alert Bay for a potlatch, and something changed his mind.

“One of the nights I was there, a pretty respected carver who I look up to gave me this talk at, like, three in the morning, about the gift I have and the talents that I carry, and it was just amazing. He couldn’t have known what I was thinking, and here he was, giving me this talk about how important it is that I’m doing what I’m

“I’ve been doing it 15 years straight now, I think,” he says.

He watched the first few, he says, but it took him a few years of watching to build up the confidence to sign up. Once he did, however, he was hooked. He’s won basically every category on offer at the competition, he says, but that’s not what’s important about participating.

“I’ve gained a lot of skills from going in that contest,” he says, “and it’s also

another opportunity for me to give back using my skills and my culture. And he enjoys the challenge of turning around a carving in a short time.

“I’m used to spending a month on a piece, right? So then to go whip one out in a couple of days … well, you’ve gotta go in with a good plan, and your time is precious in those kinds of competitions. Every minute is important, so it’s a totally different kind of experience.”

These events are also about the camaraderie.

Many of the carvers at a competition like Transformations on the Shore come every year – or most years – and Henderson says he enjoys meeting up with them whenever they come back.

“Some of those guys, man, they just travel around carving, selling enough work to make it up the road to the next competition, and they’ve got some great stories to share.

They’re fun guys to hang out with.”

The public can go hang out with them, too, this June 22-26, as the wood chips fly from the chainsaws down at the 20th annual Transformations on the Shore at Frank James Park in Willow Point.

Story by Alistair Taylor The Campbell River Chapter of Cystic Fibrosis Canada holds a successful fundraising golf tournament, dinner and auction every year and a major part of that success has been due to its patron, retired hockey star Rod Brind’Amour.

Over 20 years the Rod Brind’Amour Golf Classic raised $1.5 million for the search for a cure for Cystic Fibrosis.

Then last year, Brind’Amour himself announced that the young player who had been accompanying him to the annual event for the last five years had signed on as co-patron of the successful community event. That meant a name change was in order and it was announced at last year’s golf classic that it would henceforth be known as the Rod Brind’Amour/ Ryan Nugent-Hopkins Golf Classic, Dinner and Auction.

“Last year before the event, Rod came to the committee,” said Chris Black, an organizing committee member, longtime activist for cystic fibrosis and a former executive of Cystic Fibrosis Canada. “It was his idea to ask Ryan if he would consider lending his name to the event.”

Right from the start nearly 21 years ago, Brind’Amour has wanted it to be a classy event that made sure every penny raised went directly into Cystic Fibrosis research and support for patients. But such is Brind’Amour’s concern for the event that he wanted to ensure it continued to be a success and that meant evaluating what could make it better. In doing that, Brind’Amour, now a few years

removed from his playing days, was obviously looking to the future and concluded that the event needed some new blood. He felt the event needed a new name associated with it that would keep it fresh in the public eye and maintain its relevance to a new generation.

Burnaby’s Nugent-Hopkins burst into the National Hockey League as a highly touted rookie in the 2011-2012 season. He has since become a young star in the game. But it was his mom that proved to be a connection to Brind’Amour, the retired hockey star and member of the Carolina Hurricanes coaching staff.

Frankie Hester, a volunteer with the Brind’Amour golf classic lives in Vancouver and comes up here every year to help with the event. That volunteer knows Nugent-Hopkins’ mother Deb and admires Brind’Amour and what he does for CF. Nugent-Hopkins’ mother knew what a great event the golf classic is and what a wonderful job Brind’Amour does with it each year and how passionate and committed he is to the event.

“And so Deb, she thought that would be a nice thing for Ryan to become involved in,” Black said. Being from Burnaby, Campbell River was close to Nugent-Hopkins’ summer home and so the committee asked the Nugent-Hopkins if Ryan would like to get involved. “I think it’s really thanks to Deb that she encouraged him to become involved,” Black said.

So Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (RNH, as he’s often nicknamed) attended that first year and met with young people with cystic fibrosis and had a really good time with Brind’Amour.

“They just really seemed to connect,” Black said. Another thing that helped NugentHopkins decide to get involved was the welcome he received from the community.

“I think our community really was happy to see him and really opened their arms to him. It was ‘Welcome Ryan and we’re so happy you came,’” Black said.

Since then Nugent-Hopkins has come back every year and last year it was decided to approach him. Brind’Amour wanted the event to keep the strong support from the community going and one way to do that is to have new blood.

“It was important to him, anyway, that we have a hockey player who is actually playing because he feels there’s a little bit more interest,” Black said. “We believe there’s a lot of interest and support in this community just for Rod because of who he is but in his mind he just felt it was a good thing and he really liked what Ryan was doing and the fact that Ryan was pretty committed.”

Nugent-Hopkins is committed to the event now and continues to support Cystic Fibrosis Canada by doing an event for

the Edmonton chapter during his hockey season. He has has met some young people with CF there and developed some relationships with them, especially the teenage boys who really look to him as a role model.

“Sometimes that’s the stage when they start having some difficulty complying with their medication routine and their physio routine,” Black said. “Ryan’s been really encouraging to the kids to keep at it, keep working hard, stay healthy and so he’s been a little bit of an inspiration. That’s often a stage where their health starts to decline anyway. It’s even more important for them to keep going.”

Kids at that age often find it hard to keep going because they don’t feel they’re getting any better and they’re often having to increase their medications.

“Because that’s what CF is, it just gets worse and worse,” Black said.

Once known as a childhood illness because sufferers rarely lived into adulthood, CF now has more adult patients in Canada than children. But there is still further to go.

“I didn’t think we’d still be here doing this 20 years later,” Black’s daughter Kim Wood said during her address to last year’s banquet. “I thought we’d have a cure.”

And that’s what the Rod Brind’Amour/Ryan Nugent-Hopkins Golf Classic, Dinner and Auction’s goal is to help find a cure.

This year’s event is on June 18 with the golf at Storey Creek and the dinner and auction at the Sportsplex. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $45 each and available by calling Bev, 250-276-8600. Dinner is catered buy Quay West Kitchen and Catering. The M.C. will be Bruce Williams and the auctioneer is Jason Fitzgerald.

But because it now has new blood in the form of a new co-patron, it needed a new name – the Rod Brind’Amour/Ryan Nugent-Hopkins Golf Classic, Dinner and Auction.

It’s one of the biggest fundraising success stories in Campbell River and it all began 21 years ago with a little girl asking the big hockey star if he could help out his home town’s new fundraiser for cystic fibrosis research. Wood (née Black) was a young girl struggling with cystic fibrosis, a disease that killed people by the time they were in their early 20s. The organizers of the then-new golf tournament were bandying about names of celebrities that could attach their names to the event and Campbell Riverite Brind’Amour’s name came up. The plucky, 12-year-old Wood said she would contact the player and drafted up a letter sent to him care of his team at the time, the Philadelphia Flyers.

“Back then I was a younger kid in the NHL,” Brind’Amour recalled last year. “I never really viewed myself as a role model.”

Brind’Amour has been linked with the tournament ever since and the success of the event has been phenomenal. Last year’s event alone raised $93,000.

Brind’Amour set the standard back in 1995, agreeing to sign on as long as it was a classy affair and that all the money go towards fighting the disease. Brind’Amour has attended every year and covers all his travel expenses himself.

Paralleling the success of the Campbell River fundraiser has been the success in the medical profession in improving the longevity of individuals living with the disease.

Brind’Amour has always been modest about his contribution but his support has been unwavering. He always parks himself at the 17th hole – 17 was his sweater number during his playing days – and greets each and every golfer that comes through. They get to talk to him and have a picture taken with him.

He frequently invites his hockey friends to attend the event. NugentHopkins started attending five years ago and the two joined each group at the tee box of Storey Creek’s signature 17th hole last year, posing for team photos and lending their tee shots to the best-ball play.

At last year’s banquet, it was announced that Nugent-Hopkins had agreed to take on a larger role with the event.

“I’m not playing anymore, and I think it’s time for some new blood,” Brind’Amour said.

“Ryan deserves a big hand,” Brind’Amour told the banquet last year. The news was greeted with a standing ovation. “But my name’s still going on the top!”

Indeed, Brind’Amour has no intention of walking away from the event.

That date, the first day of summer, has been chosen as National Aboriginal Day. It’s an opportunity for everyone to celebrate the cultural richness and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people.

Why June 21? Well, on that day, for centuries, many of the first inhabitants would celebrate the arrival of the warm weather and the pleasures of the summer solstice.

The summer solstice is the day of the year with the longest light. It is a day with spiritual significance for many people and is a good time to celebrate Aboriginal people and cultures.

The growing recognition of Aboriginal rights in Canadian law led to calls for greater recognition of the contributions of Aboriginal peoples to Canadian society.

Shortly after the adoption of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms in 1982, the National Indian Brotherhood, the leading body representing First Nations in Canada, called for the creation of a yearly “National Aboriginal Solidarity Day” on June 21. Pressure for a national day of recognition continued to grow during the following decade as new ways were sought to bridge the divide between Aboriginal peoples and other Canadians, especially in the wake of the 1990 Oka Crisis.

In 1995, the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples recommended the designation of a “National First Peoples Day” as a way to focus attention on the history,

achievements and contributions of Aboriginal peoples in Canada.

This message was repeated later that year during the Sacred Assembly, a national conference chaired by Elijah Harper, which called for a national holiday to celebrate the contributions of Aboriginal peoples. On June 13, 1996, after considerable consultation with Aboriginal organizations, June 21 was officially declared Laichwiltach National Aboriginal Day. Since its inauguration, National Aboriginal Day has become part of the annual nationwide Celebrate Canada! Festivities held from June 21 to July 1.

June 21 was chosen because of the cultural significance of the summer solstice and because many Aboriginal groups mark this day as a time to celebrate their heritage. Setting aside a day for Aboriginal peoples is part of the wider recognition of their important place within the fabric of Canada and the ongoing contributions to Canadian society made by First Nations, Métis and Inuit.

Mitchell Mussenden says he kind of always expected he and Lucas Antoni would start playing music together. Mussenden, 24, and Antoni, 23, went to school together in Campbell River and Mussenden remembers that one day, Antoni was over at his place playing music and they decided to start doing music together and see what happens.

“It was really spontaneous,” said Antoni. “Honestly, there’s no real big story behind it,” agreed Mussenden. “It was just years of ‘it’s probably going to happen at some point.’”

A few years ago, Mussenden and Antoni formed How Could I, blending acoustic music with alt-rock, post-punk and jazz to create a unique sound that’s been catching people’s attention and opening up opportunities since they started performing. This spring, Patrick Herman, 23, joined the band on drums.

“We were fortunate enough that everything just kind of worked out,” said Antoni. “Like we had just one good experience after another, all these blessings.”

“For the first year and a half of us getting involved with music and live music, which is what we jumped into, was just phenomenal,” agreed Mussenden. “We got nothing but positive responses from the people that we were around.”

Antoni and Mussenden started playing music together nearly four years ago.

“We met a friend named Trent and he got us really involved in playing at the open mics and getting us involved with music and everything,” said Mussenden. “We started getting more passionate about it. We had a lot of people pushing us and telling us we were doing a really good job for the lack of experience that we both had at the time, so we both started doing that and we started writing our own original material — and that was really fun, seeing the response that we’d get from friends and family or just strangers out at the open mics. We started playing at places like Painter’s Lodge and getting really good responses from the ever-changing crowd.”

Herman had seen Antoni and Mussenden play a couple of times before he met up with them. They did phenomenal as an acoustic duo,” he said.

They met at a jam at Super Mario’s Bar and Lounge. “There was nobody on drums because they were just in duo and I

Antoni says this was a moment that kickstarted the band. They started working on more original songs and thinking about going into the studio.

Antoni and Mussenden started recording their first self-titled EP about a year ago. “It was a cool experience,” said Antoni. “We got to work with some great people.”

They worked with performance coach Jason Parsons and Jacob Gregory, who owns Aurora Music Studios in Comox. Parsons coproduced the EP, while Gregory engineered the album. Herman wasn’t in the band at the time so he doesn’t play on the EP. Gregory did the drum and bass tracks on the recording. “I’m itching to get in there,” said Herman. “I really want to do it.”

How Could I celebrated the release of its EP April 22 at the Carriage Room at the Royal Coachman Inn, with a sold-out show opened by Courtenay’s Joey Clarkson.

“That was some of the most fun I’ve had playing those songs,” said Herman. “I was definitely really blown away by how nice the Carriage Room was and how many people were there. It was better than I could have imagined.”

This spring, the band was also nominated for two Vancouver Island Music Awards: Group/Duo of the Year and Pop Recording for “Killing Clocks.”

was just there for hanging out and checking out the scene,” said Herman. “They played Red Hot Chili Peppers’ ‘Under the Bridge’ and I just couldn’t help myself and I went up there and sat on the kit. They came to the part where the drums come in and I came in.”

Looking forward, How Could I will playing at Painter’s Lodge throughout the summer, and the band plans to write songs and work on the business side too, supporting the EP and building up some merchandise.

“We’d never met before,” continued Herman. “I just walked up there. I’m pretty sure I actually missed my cue and then they noticed I was back there and I told them to loop it around and they went back into it.”

“It definitely helps having such supportive friends and family that the three of us have,” said Antoni. “It’s done so many favours for us.

And even people to help us push. Even at the EP release party, we had friends swapping at the merch table, Joey Clarkson selling CDs for us. We didn’t expect any of that to happen. We have so many supportive friends. Every time I think about stuff like that, it seems more and more like this is meant to work because so many good things just present themselves.”

“That was hilarious,” said Antoni. “It worked perfectly.”

And then they didn’t see each other again for a year. They saw each other once more but then again not for another year. Herman and Mussenden bumped into each other at a friend’s house and Mussenden told Herman that they were thinking of expanding and getting a drummer. Herman was open and said he’d love to come and play with them because he knew he liked what they were doing.

“Overall, it’s been an amazingly overwhelming experience the last couple of years, just to see how positive of a reaction we’ve received,” said Mussenden.

A couple of years ago, How Could I won a small recording demo at Dove Creek. The Flying Canoe Pub in Courtenay was hosting a competition for local acts to play for a free one- or two-song recording experience.

If you like discovering a good wine and supporting a local charity head to the Maritime Heritage Centre on June 11 for an evening of whites, reds and blues.

Daybreak Rotary is hosting the seventh annual Wine and Blues Fest by the sea featuring Tim Williams, 2014 International Blues Challenge Award winner.

“We have over 12 winery representatives with wine from regions all over the world and this year 3 craft beer tasting tables,” said Theresa Marson, one of the coordinators of the event.

The wine tasting will be complimented by a special selection of cheeses, cold cuts, breads, fruit dishes and spreads all generously provided by Thrifty’s Food, Super Mario’s Bar and Lounge, Rocky Mountain Chocolates, Natural Pasture Cheese, Outlandish Shellfish and Grieg Seafood.

Attendees will have the chance to sample specialty wines as well as learn about the perfect wine pairing at ‘Winespeak seminars’. There will be a silent auction and tickets to the event include a chance to win a door prize.

A CLOWN AT HEART

Story by Kristen Douglas Sharon Turner-Rondquist has always been a clown at heart.

But it didn’t.

While the other girls around her were preoccupied with thoughts of what colour and type of gown they would wear to graduation, she had something else in mind.

Always wanting to be a clown, her mom, Patricia Turner, finally made Turner-Rondquist a clown suit when she was in high school.

“I asked if I could wear my clown suit to my graduation and my parents said no,” Turner-Rondquist says. “My cousin’s boyfriend, who was a good friend of mine, ended up surprising me by showing up in a clown costume and escorting me down the aisle. So that was as close as I got.”

After tagging along with a friend to entertain at a child’s birthday party, she was hooked.

Her parents thought that would be the end of it.

“I guess my parents kind of thought it might wear off,” Turner-Rondquist says.

But she wasn’t so sure on how to get where she wanted to go.

“I would put on circuses in our garage at home as a kid and would charge people to come. I always wanted to to that, but didn’t know how,” Turner-Rondquist says. “There’s nothing about circus arts at career day. I have a friend who

talks about me being kind of grouchy at career day because there were no clowns or theatre schools.”

So she forged her own path, and went to college to study early childhood education. When she wasn’t at school, she would put on her clown suit and before long she was doing a few birthday parties, blowing up balloons and making children laugh.

After attending a workshop on Cortes Island put on by Wavy Gravy and Txi Whizz – wellknown entertainers in the clowning world – Turner-Rondquist says she knew clowning was Two For what she wanted to do for a living.

Pizza Turner-Rondquist what her name was. The problem was, The other clowns in the show Stuffed asked she didn’t know how to answer because she still didn’t have one.

“They decided to name me – a French name, ‘Mon Shoo Shoo’, which translates to My Little Cabbage,” Turner-Rondquist says. “It’s an affirmative term, that you’re sweet. I didn’t speak French so I turned it into Shoo Shoo and I got these big shoes. It made sense for the kids to have a literal term and it just kind of FAMILY SIZEstuck and I created the character around it.”

by Turner-Rondquist’s mom who helps run the shop. The shop is named Imagination Unlimited because of the volume of costumes and suits available.

“It seemed to fit the bill because there wasn’t anything we wouldn’t try,” Turner-Rondquist says of the early days when the shop was first getting its legs out from under it.

Since then, Imagination Unlimited has stood the test of time, as has Shoo Shoo.

“I’m really lucky that Campbell River’s been so great,” she says. “It’s a really great place to work. I never thought it would last that long, but I’m still having fun.”

She also credits a strong support system.

“I’m very, very lucky I have that support,” Turner-Rondquist says. “Everyone in my family has at some point helped me.

Everyone has had something to do with the business. All three of my kids have been clowns at some point.

“I have an awesome family. My mom and all my family have been such a support, from when I told my parents I wanted to be a clown to now,” she adds. “It’s a great life and I feel very blessed for my friends and the community.”

And the community is thankful to have her. It’s rare to attend a community event and not see Shoo Shoo the Clown. “It’s a full-time life but a part-time job,” TurnerRondquist says.

And she is still doing birthday parties, though it’s slowed down from 30 weekends a year in the heydays to about two or three parties a month.

“It’s kind of going back to the old-fashioned birthday parties, where they’re happy to have it at home and have cake and punch,” Turner-Rondquist says.

And she’s happy to make people laugh.

On your initial visit, Dr. Guthy will collect information for a thorough case history, conduct a comprehensive Chiropractic, Orthopedic and Neurological examination and compile a complete report on her findings.
