Fort McMurray couple come home to help out

BY TREENA MIELKE Jim Maloney and his wife Gabriele were busy at the arena last week helping sort through supplies, chatting with people and generally just trying to be in the right place at the right time.

The couple, who lived in Rimbey, until August of last year, are familiar with the town, know a lot of people and feel right at home here.

But, for the last several months, the Maloneys have lived in Fort McMurray.

And now here they are, back in Rimbey, helping out other people like themselves, who were forced to flee from their homes due to the wildfire that left many with nothing and feeling very uncertain about the future.

As it turns out, the Maloneys are among the lucky ones.

“Our house is okay,” said Maloney, his words echoed by his wife, Gabriele. “Our house is still standing.”

Ironically, Gabriele was not in Fort McMurray when the fires began, having come to Lethbridge to visit her daughter in university and stopping in at Bluffton to spend time with her mom, Barb Hannemann.

Her husband Jim, who works for Suncor had got off night shift and was one of the last to leave the next day, finally, reluctantly, heading out on Hwy. 63 about 9:30 p.m.

He said he felt like he should stay and help.

“I felt like a coward leaving,” he said, adding he has a military background and he was certain he could have been of help.

However, he decided to head out, as his wife was in Bluffton and also he was in charge of looking after the family’s cat, and his wife wanted him to bring their pet to safety.

Maloney noted that as much as people were racing to leave Fort McMurray,

everything happened in an orderly, calm way.

“Nobody panicked. People seemed to know what to do.”

Now that the he and his wife are in Rimbey, Maloney is glad to help out here.

He said it is difficult for the people of Fort McMurray to accept handouts.

“They are used to giving, not receiving,” he said. “It’s hard for them.”

Acting as a liaison between the victims of the fire and the people in Rimbey is one way the Maloneys can make a difference.

“When I see people coming in, I can go talk to them and say, ‘hello, I’m from Fort McMurray, too and I’m here to help.’”

A few years back former Prime Minister Stephen Harper seemed obsessed with getting rid of the mandatory long census form or, at least, relegating it to an optional or volunteer form. In essence, the long form is a detailed, probing, invasive set of questions from Stats Canada for individual Canadian citizens to answer, the purpose of which was never exactly clear. In the past, the long form was mandatory; if you were one of the 30 per cent of Canadians

who received it, you were required to fill it out. Or else.

Harper seemed to take a page from the libertarian handbook…that is, the more you try to force people to do something, the more they resist.

In 2012 Harper was quoted by the Canadian Press as saying, “This has detailed personal information that is being sought by the government. I know some Canadians will have some reluctance to provide that and I know some people think the appropriate way to deal with that is through prosecuting those individuals with fines and jail terms. This government will not do that. In this day and age, that is not an appropriate way to get the public’s co-operation.”

Harper’s government didn’t eliminate the long form. They simply changed the status of it from, “Fill this out or your government will throw you in jail” to “Please fill this out if you have time, it will help your country.”

This past week Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government brought back the mandatory long form census, complete with fines and jail time for Canadian citizens who want their privacy. I don’t think it’s difficult to tell what the feds have in store for us judging by the census form I got in the mail this past week. Right on the front of the envelope is the statement, “Complete the census-it’s the law.”

Apparently the wags and bureaucrats who felt the long census was vitally important neglected to attend the “good manners” class in Ottawa.

Have you ever heard of the word “Please?” You know, after reading that statement on the front I felt like phoning Hollywood Justin and telling him to shove his census and his attitude right up Stats Canada’s inbox.

I’m a citizen and taxpayer of this country and I will be treated with respect. The fact that I got unsolicited mail that

said “YOU’LL DO THIS OR ELSE” really helps critics of the federal government and the civil servant culture. It reinforces what a lot of critics say about the federal government, especially a federal government based in eastern Canada, far away from Alberta and its citizens.

Stats Canada swears up and down the information in the long census is urgently required, and it asks questions like “How far do you drive to work everyday?” Maybe that’s important, maybe it’s not.

Personally, I feel it should be optional; I shouldn’t morally be forced to answer these private questions. It should be my choice.

Here’s a sample question: “What were the ethnic or cultural origins of this person’s ancestors? An ancestor is usually more distant than a grandparent.

For example, Canadian, English, Chinese, French, East Indian, Italian, German, Scottish, Cree, Mi’kmaq, Salish, Métis,

Inuit, Filipino, Irish, Dutch, Ukrainian, Polish, Portuguese, Vietnamese, Korean, Jamaican, Greek, Iranian, Lebanese, Mexican, Somali, Colombian, etc.” What about the Norwegians?

Sheesh, just no respect at all.

Fear not, I’m a law-abiding citizen and I will fill out my census and mail it back to Ottawa using Canada Post. Canada Post is obligated to ensure my mail is delivered without fail. It’s the law.

The funny thing about this entire “long census form” manufactroversy is that after it became mandatory again May 2, we’re told that Stats Canada’s website crashed from the number of people clicking on.

If there’s that much interest, I seriously doubt whether being mandatory or not would make any difference.

Fort McMurray fires give columnist cause to think on a global scale

I think we all often forget how vast and large the world is. The entirety of human existence is confined to a single humongous planet. The daily grind and routine of life usually has us all entrenched in a very small existence, but that is not to say on the individual level it isn’t an important existence.

While we walk our dog,

buy our groceries, drop our kids off at school, or check our mail boxes our personal thoughts often don’t balloon to include the global scale. Most of us are simply concerned with when we’ll find a chance to mow the grass.

There are probably millions of other people on other parts of the globe that are thinking or doing the same things; we don’t necessary think about the trivialities of others’ lives.

It isn’t until there is a major event that our thoughts are thrust out from the simple spheres of our personal routines.

The newspapers, news channels, and social media sites are good at doing this.

The devastating fire of Fort McMurray has erased the routines of

many Alberta families: they can no longer walk the dog, get groceries, or check the mail; all of those normal routines dissolved when the fire took their neighbourhoods. And for those people, whose homes were lost, their worlds became very small in very short period of time.

I can’t imagine losing everything I own, and some people in Fort Mac did. It is not simply a bunch of stuff or material possessions. In our society what you own and what you possess serve as markers for individual identities (for the good or the bad): you can’t be a gardener if you don’t have a garden to tend.

So when the fires are burning and people’s homes are being engulfed, it is reasonable

to understand that a person, on the cusp of losing everything they own, would want every accessible emergency responder to put out the flames. It would even be reasonable for this person to become upset when they learn of extra resources that are readily accessible, but are not going to be utilized to save their burning community.

In situations where an individual is experiencing extreme loss, their world is becoming very small. Often it is forgotten that other families and other communities are still under the threat of other nature disasters.

Those families and communities still need protection, and what that might look like, to some people, is unutilized re-

sources. Perspective in this manner accounts for a lot.

I don’t want to imagine another disaster occurring in Alberta during the same time Fort McMurray is battling theirs. But it could happen. It would be terribly tragic for another disaster to arise when too many resources are aiding Fort Mac, which may leave the emergency protection of other communities too weak.

I believe it is important to harbour a larger perspective when serious situations break out like the one effecting Fort McMurray. No one wants to lose a home to a fire, but we must remember there are many other homes that aren’t burning and we want to keep it that way.

Temporary restriction on off-highway vehicles in effect SUBMITTED A temporary province wide restriction on off-highway vehicle (OHV) recreational use on public lands and provincial parks is now in effect to help prevent the spread of wildfires.

This action comes in response to the request of the Alberta Off-Highway Vehicle Association and follows the government’s province wide fire ban and ban on incendiary targets on all provincial Crown lands issued May 5.

“Our fire crews are working around the clock to battle wildfires in Fort McMurray and around the province. All Albertans can do their part to help ensure firefighters can focus their resources on the areas of greatest need,” said Oneil Carlier, Minister Agriculture of and Forestry.

“We do not take this step lightly; however, we must reduce the potential for more wildfires throughout the province. Quite simply, OHV recreational use under our current conditions has the very real potential to contribute to an already catastrophic wildfire season,” said Shannon Phillips, Minister of Environment and Parks The OHV restriction will be in place until further notice.

It applies to recreational use on public lands, including designated OHV trails, only. It will not apply to agriculture, public safety or commercial/industrial users who operate OHVs for farming, enforcement or business purposes. The OHV restriction does not apply to the use of an OHV by Indigenous peoples when exercising a right recognized and affirmed under Part II of the Constitution Act, 1982 or a right under section 12 of the Natural Resources Transfer Agreement.

Wildfire management staff, along with enforcement personnel, including Conservation Officers and Fish and Wildlife Officers, will enforce the temporary OHV recreational restriction immediately. OHVs include all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), four-wheel vehicles, motorcycles and related two-wheel vehicles and amphibious machines.

It was 36 years ago, but Wanda Cline remembers it well.

She was living in Snow Lake, Manitoba and seven and a half months pregnant when the call came to evacuate the town because of a spreading fire. Six years later, she was again forced to evacuate because of a fire.

Today Cline is helping out as a volunteer at the arena where loads of clothes, food and supplies keep coming in to help the victims of the wildfire at Fort McMurray.

She says reports of the fire and the damage, devastation and destruction it caused have brought back memories.

She wants to do what she can to help.

“It’s terrifying,” she said. “You feel numb inside, you’re in shock. It’s a grief, a loss, a bereavement.”

Cline recalls being evacuated by helicopter and being put up in a basement suite for four days. She said the kindness she experienced was wonderful and something she will always remember.

“People pull together at a time like that,” she said.

Watching scenes of the fire rip through Fort McMurray was a grim reminder of what she and her family went through so many years ago, Cline said, noting the far-reaching effects of this fire will be around for a long time.

“It is devastating,” she said. “They won’t be going home in four days,” she added.

Fort McMurray family recounts exodus from city, kindnesses extended to them from community

BY TREENA MIELKE They could have been on a little holiday get-away, this family, so quick were their smiles and so easy their manner as they teased and joked with one another.

But, even though their smiles were brave and genuine and their hospitality gracious, it became clear as their story unfolded that they were not on a holiday and this was no little family get-a-way.

It began with a phone call, said Megan Wheaton, sitting cross-legged on a chesterfield in the family’s holiday trailer. She explained that she and her boyfriend, Jay Patterson, who are both heavy-duty equipment operators for Suncor had worked the night shift the night before the call to evacuate came in.

The phone call came from her ex-husband’s mother, saying they were picking up Calleigh, Megan’s sixyear-old daughter from school and heading out of Fort McMurray. She said the city was being evacuated.

Her words spurred Megan to action.

“I woke Jay up and said we needed to start packing.”

Jay and his son, Kyle, who had joined the family in Fort McMurray just a few weeks earlier from New Brunswick where he played rugby for Team Canada,

took off to fill up their truck with diesel.

Kyle, who had planned to go to the gym earlier, was already suspicious something was wrong as the gym was closed and traffic was crazy when he drove home.

The men took off to get fuel, but progress was slow.

“It was a five minute drive to the gas station and it took them four hours,” said Megan. “Everybody was leaving.”

Finally when they got close enough to the gas station, Kyle and his dad took turns running back and forth with a jerry can to fill the truck up with fuel.

While the men fueled up, Meridth and her nanny, Marivic Bas, began packing.

The family’s first intention was to go north and Megan packed blankets and food, along with a full box of cherished photo albums.

As it turned out, the family, including their pets, a dog and two cats, along with Megan’s ex-husband and his family, including her daughter, decided to go south on Hwy. 63.

Driving out of Fort McMurray was surreal, said Megan.

“It was like a movie, there was a house on fire right beside us and behind us it was like the apocalypse. Mushroom clouds of smoke behind us and in front of us blue skies.

They arrived at Anzac, a hamlet located on Hwy.

881 along the east shore of Gregoire Lake, approximately 36 kilometers southeast of Fort McMurray six hours later.

It was normally a 35-minute drive.

Their stay turned to be short lived, however, because the next day Anzac was also evacuated.

And so the family moved on.

They drove to Palondon, White Sands resort where they stayed for two nights.

While there they were joined by Megan’s daughter.

Finally, the decision was made to take advantage of an offer made through friends of the family, to use the free camping offered at RV Heaven Campground at Gull Lake.

The family has been overwhelmed by the generosity shown to them, since arriving at the campsite.

As well as the owners of the campsite offering them a free place to stay, they have been treated with great kindness and generosity wherever they’ve gone in the town of Rimbey, said Megan.

She said they had to take two of their pets to the pet clinic in Rimbey and both animals were treated, free of charge.

They were also invited out to a buffalo farm owned by Butch and Nicole Smith. The outing turned out to be fun and relaxing for the whole family.

Jay, who enjoys golfing

and is hopeful both his golf clubs and his Harley motorcycle is intact when he gets home, said Mayor Rick Pankiw has offered to ensure he has some free golf at local clubs.

“We’ve been treated exceptionally well,” said Megan, “but it feels really odd for us to be on the other end of the donations.

“We are used to giving, not taking. Fort McMurray is all about helping others.”

She noted she and her family were picking up garbage in their neighbourhood just two days before the fire.

The family is not sure when it will be safe to go home. Megan and her daughter have gone back to Newfoundland for a week or so to stay with family.

Jay and Kyle and Marivic and the pets will remain here.

Megan and Jay have been told they have jobs to go back to and they have found out their house is still standing, although they are not sure if there is smoke damage.

While Fort McMurray has been through the wringer in the last few months with declining oil prices and, finally, this devastating fire, the city will come back, she said.

The family plans to volunteer to help out wherever and whenever they can when they finally are allowed back in.

“We will go back and we will fix that town.”

Bentley curling league champs and raffle winners announced

BY JUNE NORVILA At the Bentley Curling Club annual spring general meeting in early April the league champions were announced. They were: the Dave Neufeld team out of the 16 Monday Daytime Seniors teams, Walter Lloyd and Norm Rieu tied in the nine team Monday night Men’s League, Elisabeth Mueller won out of the nine Wednesday Evening Mixed teams, Perry Widdifield won from the eight team Thursday Morning Senior’s league, Walter Lloyd won from the eight Thursday Evening Mixed league teams and in the eight Daytime Senior’s Stick league there was a tie between Morris/ Ganderton and the Moss teams.

The cash raffle winners names were drawn by Mayor Lynda HaarstadPetten. Winning the grand prize of $10,000 was Logan Siebold from Rimbey.

Second prize of $3,000 was won by Jeff Kamlah, a member, and the $2,000 third prize was won by Jason Wiese who is also a

club member.

President Bonnie Muzylouski gave a very thorough report with the aid of a power point presentation.

The treasurer Tilly Wilson explained her report. The club is in good shape financially. The cash raffle made a profit of approximately $9,000. The town of Bentley gave the club a grant that enabled the club to replace all the curling rocks with new handles. There was a CFEP grant of $7,800 and $5,000 from Lacombe County.

The next casino to work will be in late 2016 or early 2017.

It was decided to by some new matting for the rink walkways, front and back, and also for the entrance and lobby with a cost of around $6,000.

There were 28 teams in the Farmer’s Spiel, 32 teams in the Seniors Spiel, 8 teams in the Men’s Skins bonspiel, 12 entered in the Ladies Spiel and 10 teams in the closing Mixed T & C Bonspiel with bonspiel profits of almost $16,500.00.

Club members are again volunteering to help with the Bentley July 1 barbecue.

Colleen Peterson did a marvelous job of running the bar.

There will be a new ice technician next year - Chris Carnes who also looks after Lacombe’s curling ice.

It was decided that bonspiel fees would rise by $20 per team next year except for the senior’s bonspiel.

It is hoped the junior program can continue to grow. A wonderful job with 20 new junior members was done by Karen Jaffray and Ray Walker and other volunteers, and the school again used the rink on Thursdays and Fridays for their curling season.

The Town & Country Mixed Spiel had been changed earlier to March 18-19 because of where Easter fell. The number of entries was down.

The Doug Batke team won the A Event. The Andy Mueller team won the B Event and the C Event was won by the Cyndy Gibson team.

After cleaning out the curling rink’s ice surface area, the curling club now takes a break so the Bentley Farmer’s Market can use the facility on Saturdays for the summer starting on the May long weekend.

BY TREENA MIELKE The community of Rimbey watched in horror as their northern neighbour was engulfed in a rain of fire that caused a mass exit of people, many of them taking their beloved pets, cherished photos and only a few other basic necessities with them.

But, true to form, the people of Rimbey didn’t stand by and watch for long.

Being a farming community who is used to getting things done, that’s exactly what they did.

They pitched in.

Mayor Rick Pankiw is one of those people.

Pankiw has spent the last several days at the arena, first organizing food and supplies to be sent to the victims in trailers.

The last few days he has worked with FCSS, individuals and local service clubs to ensure food, trailers and camping spaces are available for Fort McMurray victims.

As of Thursday more than 100 people from Fort McMurray have signed in at the arena and several families are camped at The Nesting Place and RV Heaven. Phone calls are still coming in and at least two more families are on their way.

Today, (Thursday), May 12, Pankiw is telling the public to hold off on donations of food, clothing and supplies.

“No more donations,” he said. “We are good.”

Pankiw is overwhelmed by the support the people of Rimbey and area have shown.

“It is a great community. I am proud to call Rimbey home.”

It just so happens that it wasn’t that many years ago the mayor was proud to call another community home.

And that community was Fort McMurray.

He moved to Fort McMurray in 1982 to play junior hockey and he and his wife Sue spent several years there.

Now, he finds himself becoming quite emotional when he watches the news clips of the fire burning at Fort McMurray.

“It’s very emotional,” he said. “I’ve quit watching it, I just can’t.”

Pankiw said he found Fort McMurray to be a close-knit community.

“People in Fort McMurray would give you the shirt off their back. They really would. I loved Fort McMurray.”

ADAMS Peter Elmer Adams of Rimbey, Alberta passed away peacefully, at the age of 93 years, at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Tuesday, May 10, 2016, after a brief time spent there.

Peter was born on July 6, 1922 at home on his parent’s homestead, the fifth of six children. He took his schooling at the Rose School, up to Grade 10. In those early years, he worked for many neighbours; stooking and threshing, and cutting and hauling wood, along with doing the chores that went with pioneer farming. In 1942, he met and married Margaret Caswell, a teacher at the Rose School.

They first lived on his father’s farm, and Peter helped with the farming in the summer and worked at the Jones’ Sawmill in the Faraway District during the winter.

During this time, there was the addition of a son to their family every year. Peter had bought a quarter of land, and later when their sixth son was born they purchased their present farm, the home quarter. He eventually expanded the farm to include five quarters of land at the northeast side of Gull Lake, and bought his own sawmill which he operated for a few years. While his sons were at home, they learned from him how to hunt, fish, do the farm work, and weld and fix the old equipment to keep things going. Peter was a regular at all the farm auctions in the district and without fail, brought home ‘something useful’. He continued to take an interest in the farm until his passing. Peter and Margaret resided together on their farm for 55 years until her passing in 2008. Through the years, Peter always made time to help out the neighbours, and they in turn helped him. He like to talk to people and a warm welcome awaited anyone who stopped by for a visit or a game of cards. He was a member of the Rimbey Fish and Game Association for a number of years, and shared his knowledge of vintage building tools with others who volunteered at PasKaPoo Park. Reading was also a past time he kept up his whole life. With a remarkable memory, he continued into his senior years to recite lengthy pieces of poetry and sing old songs at family gatherings, which both amused and impressed his grandchildren. For the last number of years, one of his favourite outings was to accompany two of his sons when they entertained at different senior’s lodges and retirement homes. He lived a humble life and enjoyed the best of what that gave him.

Peter is survived by his sons: Gerald (Helen) of Rocky Mountain House, Brian (Beverly) of Sundre, Stuart (Judy), Ronald (Janet), and Richard all of Rimbey, and Russell (Lori Bengtson) of Lacombe; as well as fifteen grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild; in addition to his sister, Peggy Symes of Rimbey. Peter was predeceased by his beloved wife, Margaret; his parents, Frank and Edith Adams; his daughter-in-law, Dallas Adams; and four siblings: Dolly Farnham, Sarah Lambertus, Arnold Adams, and Ralph Adams.

In keeping with Peter’s wishes, no formal Funeral Service will be held. Cremation took place at the Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer, Alberta. A Private Family Gathering will be held at a later date. CHALMERS It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to Gregory Leroy Chalmers of Gull Lake, Alberta, who passed away at his home on Friday, May 6, 2016 at the age of 60 years.

Greg was born on January 21, 1956 in Lacombe, Alberta. He did rock crushing and a year of custom combining across the U.S.A., and was building houses for Dowling Brothers when he married Vicky Steiger in 1981. They took over a dairy farm near Hoadley, Alberta. In the early 90s, Greg moved back into home construction with Spectrum Enterprises, which he started with his close friends, Jim and Blake. Greg and Vicky sold the dairy business and relocated to Gull Lake a short time later. Greg and his family moved into Rimbey for a few years, and this is where he met his second wife, Barb. They were united in marriage in 1999, and moved back to the Gull Lake area where Greg spent the rest of his life on his dad’s original property, eventually planning to open a golf course under the Diamond C name.

In those last years at Gull Lake, Greg’s career path included a variety of jobs from home restoration, to construction, to truck driving. At the time of his passing, he had just purchased his own truck and was starting up his new company, Twin Coulee Ventures.

Greg was a great man who will be missed dearly by many people.

Greg will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife, Barb; and his children, Luke (Brandy) of Gull Lake; Crystal (Rickie) of Blackfalds; Jessica (Chris) of Blackfalds; Carl of Edmonton; Carolyn also of Blackfalds; and Nicholas (Natasha) of Rimbey. “Opa” will also be missed by his seven cherished grandchildren: Morgan, Davis, Zane, Samuel, Autumn, Blake, and Maddi. He will also be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by two brothers: Craig (Sue) of Beaumont; and Darcy (Marlene) of Sherwood Park; in addition to numerous nieces, nephews, other family members, and a host of treasured friends. Greg was predeceased by his parents, Ron and Elsie; and his first wife, Vicky in 1997.

Family and Friends were invited to a Prayer Vigil which was held at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, Rimbey on Thursday, May 12, 2016 at 7:00 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, Rimbey on Friday, May 13, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Father Les Drewicki, Celebrant.

Interment followed in the Gull Lake Cemetery, Gull Lake. STEPANIUK Andrew July 6, 1916 - May 7, 2016

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Andy Stepaniuk in Edmonton, two months shy of his 100th birthday. Andy was married to Helen (nee Dapping) for 67 years and mourned her passing in 2007.

Today, he leaves to mourn: five children, Earl (Caroline), Marlene Derkoch (Morris), Brian (Louise), David and Donald. Andy was predeceased by his son Gary in 1986.

He also leaves: two sisters, Anne (Vancouver), Elsie (Calgary) and his stepbrother Dennis (Surrey), 15 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, nine great-greatgrandchildren, five great-great-great grandchildren, as well as many nephews, nieces and cherished friends. Andy was born in Dolzski, Poland and at age five, moved to Canada with his mother and sister to join his father in Dunmore, Alberta. He spent his career in the lumber industry, and was honored by the Alberta Lumberman’s Association in 1980 for his many contributions to the industry. Andy was very active, sociable and outgoing.

He particularly enjoyed his daily coffee group and Friday music social at St. Andrews. He also enjoyed his friends and coffee group “The Senators” in Rimbey and looked forward to his annual trip there on his birthday. We would like to thank his special friend Gloria Vallette for her companionship and friendship to our Dad. Andy was a wonderful dedicated husband, father, grandfather and will be sadly missed by all. At his request, there will be no funeral or memorial service. Cremation arrangements are entrusted to the care of Memories Funeral Home & Crematorium, Edmonton, Alberta.

SHAW Terence (Terry) William It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Terry on May 11, 2016 in Red Deer, Alberta. Terry waited for the sunrise and took his final breath surrounded by his family at the age of 65 years.

Terry was a vibrant great man who was the rock of our family, a friend to so many people. His friends and family meant everything to him. Terry leaves such a void in so many lives that will be impossible to fill. Terry is survived by the love of his life Janice, three sons Brandon (Melissa) of Rimbey, Dallas (Stacey) of Sylvan Lake, Colin (Mallary) of Sylvan Lake, Grandchildren Taryn, Hunter, Allie, Ashley, Kyndal, Kaje, Karson, Braun, Tanner and Logan.

Terry also leaves to mourn four brothers, three sisters and their families.

Terry was predeceased by his parents Fred and Lil Shaw as well as two brothers.

DAHMS Dorothy Jean Dahms of Rimbey, Alberta passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre ~ Area Three on Thursday, May 5, 2016, one day before her 88th birthday.

Dorothy was born in Rimbey, and was the first-born child of Ted and Hattie Pimm of the Gimlet District. She was united in marriage to Raymond Dahms, and together they raised their family and farmed in the Leedale area for many years. In 1969, Dorothy and Raymond sold the farm and relocated to Rimbey. Dorothy waitressed in many places, including in Edson, and she also cooked for Hopkins Construction for several years. Former crew members still remark today on her awesome cooking!

Dorothy served on the Leedale Hall Board, the Leedale Ladies Club, and was an active member of the Leedale Curling Club. Her house was always the hub of activity, and her coffee pot was always on. Dorothy’s home was open to anyone who needed help, and she was wellknown for her kindness and generosity.

Dorothy will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her sons, Calvin Dahms; and Allen (Laine) Dahms; and her daughter, Linda (Charlie) Gordon; as well as numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great, great grandchildren; in addition to other family members and many dear friends. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Raymond; partner, Vern; her daughter, Barb; daughters-in-law, Linda and Raye; grandsons, Lee and Colin; her brother, Art; and two sisters, Donna and Caroline.

A Public Memorial Service in Celebration of Dorothy’s Life was held at the Rimbey United Church, Rimbey on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. with the Reverend Deborah Laing officiating. A Private Family Interment took place at 10:30 a.m. in the Mount Auburn Cemetery, Rimbey. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Dorothy’s Memory may be made directly to Long Term Care at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre Administration, Box 440, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0.

She leaves to mourn her husband, Daniel T. Parker of Red Deer, AB; daughter, Valdeana M. Parker of Red Deer, AB; son, Leonard O. (Deb) Parker of Edson, AB; four grandchildren, Danielle (Gordo) Murphy of Edson, AB, Michaela (Dayen Erickson) Parker of Edson, AB, Wesley (Jen) Underhill of Campbell River, BC and Zachary (Tasha) Underhill of Vancouver, BC; also five great grandchildren, Abby, Novalee, Huxley, Landon, & Nikko; brother, Donald (Irene) Del Pino; sister, Barbara Messervia and several nieces and nephews.

Mary was predeceased by her parents, Otto DelPino (March 14, 1902 - June 5, 1973) and Angela DelPino (Favetta) (November 19, 1908-December 2, 1984); her brother, Eugene DelPino and sister, Dorothy Cummings.

Rally held for Girl Guides in Parkland area SUBMITTED On May 14 Girl Guides of Canada Parkland Area which includes Rimbey hosted a rally for all members. The theme, We Welcome the World, is an opportunity for girl members to experience the songs, crafts, and games from around the globe.

During the festivities, the Innisfail Twin Arenas came alive with the Guiding spirit from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Girls, ranging from five-year-old Sparks to 12 year-old Guides, participated in a round-robin style program.

The highlight of the program was a scrapbook made by the girls for our Guiding sisters in Guyana. The older girls, Pathfinders and Rangers, competed in an offsite challenge
