Terrace delegation seeking Chinese ties TERRACE - A delegation led by the City of Terrace is this weekend wrapping up a trip to China to visit with officials from the economic development zone which purchased nearly 1,200 acres at the city’s Skeena Industrial Development Park in 2014. Also on the trip, which began May 8, are officials from the city’s development park partner, the Kitselas First Nation, and officials from the Coast Mountains School District and Northwest Community College, all travelling to the Chinese city of Qinhuangdao and the Qinhuangdao Economic and Technological Development Zone. The trip is a follow up to a

visit by Chinese officials here last November which featured the signing of a friendship agreement to broaden economic, cultural and educational ties. To date, the Qinhuangdao zone is about to start drilling for water on the lands it purchased in Terrace, where it hopes to attract Chinese-owned enterprises to set up shop here. On the trip are mayor Carol Leclerc along with city councillors Brian Downie, Stacey Tyers and Michael Prevost. The Kitselas are represented by Kitselas First Nation chief councillor Joe Bevan and Jim Dopson from the Kitselas Development Corporation.

The Coast Mountains School District is being represented by superintendent Katherine McIntosh and Janet Meyer, one of its directors of instruction. Northwest Community College’s student success director Holly Hovland and the college’s academic head, Gord Weary, round out the delegation. Three days are being spent in Qinhuangdao and two days in Beijing, touring the Chinese capital. Also on the trip are representatives from Burnaby-based Taisheng International Investments which is acting for the Qinhuangdao development zone in Canada.

Expenses in China are being covered by the delegation’s Chinese hosts while travel and associated costs are the responsibility of those on the tour. City officials estimate the cost for the mayor and three councillors is $1,500 each. This is the fourth trip made by local officials to Qinhuangdao since their relationship began with the signing of an initial memorandum of understanding in 2013. Based in Burnaby, Taisheng International Investment Services, purchased the $11.8 million land in 2014 on behalf of the Qinhuangdao Economic Development Zone.

Former Rupertites flee devastating Fort McMurray fire By Shannon Lough THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT Homes and buildings were ablaze on both sides of the road as Miguel Borges and his nine-year-old son evacuated Fort McMurray in a line of slow-moving cars. Miguel and his family moved to Fort McMurray three years ago after spending 13 years in Prince Rupert where he worked as a teacher. Miguel said he couldn’t refuse taking the technical coordinator position at the school district in the oil town. He was working at a junior high school on Tuesday afternoon when the voluntary evacuation was announced. “We knew there was a fire south of town but it looked like it was getting really dark outside,” he said. He picked up his three kids, and with his wife Pam, he rushed home to pack up — until the evacuation became mandatory and they were told to get out

of town as quickly as possible. Pam took fouryear-old Maxi, sevenyear-old Carmen and the family dog in her Dodge Caravan, which only had a quarter tank of gas. Miguel and his oldest son, Xavier, jumped in his Ford Focus. The streets were gridlocked as everyone funnelled south out of the burning city. It took the family two-and-ahalf hours to get out of the city, which normally takes 10 minutes. “It happened very quickly. The fire was on one side of the river, it was largely contained until the wind shifted and it crossed the river, which was almost unthinkable. It’s a pretty wide river, not as wide as the Skeena, it’s maybe half as wide, and the next thing it does is race up to residential neighbourhoods,” he said. The Borges have a home on Thickwood Boulevard, one of the first neighbourhoods to be evacuated. “There was lots of fire. There was fire on both sides of us as we

were driving down the highway and pretty close to the car freaking out my kid a little bit,” Miguel said. As they drove away from the fire, the family saw abandoned vehicles left on the side of the road. Pam’s car was getting low on gas. They planned on leaving the van if they needed to and pile into Miguel’s little car. “There was no gas left in Fort McMurray, which is kind of ironic,” Miguel said. When Pam’s gas light went on they came upon Wandering River, a small town 200-kilometres south of Fort McMurray along Highway 63 and saw a working gas station. They stopped at the station and joined the long line of cars, and after an hour-and-a-half wait Pam fuelled up the van. While the Borges were in line, a woman came along and asked them if they needed a place to stay and pointed out that there was a work camp on the other side of town that had been

closed after the downturn in the oil industry. The work camp opened for the people fleeing Fort McMurray. Just before midnight, the Borges were set up in a camp room that Miguel described as a mini-ho-

tel room with a private bathroom, television and Internet. “I think this is the situation up and down the highway. Work camps that were emptied after the downturn are filling up with Fort

McMurray refugees.” Miguel expected to stay in Wandering River for a few days, and may head further south to stay with friends in Edmonton. The Borges wait for when they can return

and what is left for them to return to. Black Press is crowdfunding for individual families affected by the Fort McMurray wildfire. To learn more go to blackpress4good. com

City focused on fire prevention

Friday, May 13, 2016 - The Northern Connector A5

www.bclocalnews.com/bc_north

By Cecile Favron THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

In light of the Fort McMurray, Alta. wildfire last week which quickly grew out of control, forcing the evacuation of the city, the Kitimat fire chief says crews here remain focused on preventing fires rather than removing flammable material which could fuel flames moving into the community. Fire chief Trent Bossence explained that the community has taken steps to manage the risk of a fire spreading into the community in past years, but this year they are just focused on prevention. He noted that fire management in the dense forest surrounding

Kitimat poses unique challenges. “We do receive quite a lot of moisture throughout the year, but then there are those dry months that are a concern,” he pointed out. Wildfire fuels in the area such as trees and brush, he cited, are “difficult to manage because it is so dense and fastgrowing.” The city does have a fuel management plan in place for which they received a provincial government grant back in 2012, but initiatives such as removing dense brush and trees will not be taking place this year in preparation for the summer fire season. Last summer, city and forest fire crews spent weeks battling a blaze near the power lines by the Rio Tinto

Alcan smelter which continually rekindled during a long dry spell. Bossence says that certain areas around Kitimat, specifically Cablecar, are most at risk of a wildfire spreading into their community. However, he says that fire officials in the city need to draw the fine line between keeping the natural beauty of the forests intact and taking precautions to keep the community safe. Fire officials in the northwest typically respond to 160 wildfires each year, some of which threaten B.C. communities. The interior region of the province had already seen more than a dozen fires in the Prince George fire center area by mid-April. Most of the fires

were suspected to be human caused. Recordhigh temperatures also contributed to numerous grass fires in the area which prompted evactuations. The Peace River District evacuated areas to the north and east of Fort Saint John last week including the Cecil Lake area, the Siphon Creek area, Beatton Airport Road and the Doig River First Nation due to four large fires ranging from 50 hectares to 9,000 hectares in size. Two human-caused, large fires also started to the northwest of Hudson’s Hope, but were more easily contained by fire crews. As of late last week, the fire danger rating in Kitimat remains low, but people are still asked to

take caution when burning. You should always check for fire restriction prior to starting an open fire, and should never

leave the blaze unattended until fully extinguished. To report a suspected wildfire or a violation

of burning restrictions, call the BC Wildfire Service at 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on your cellphone.

As many as 10 wildfires in northeast B.C. this spring may have been deliberately set. Environment Minister Mary Polak said Tuesday evidence an apparent string of arsons has been turned over to conservation officers to track the source of the fires. The B.C. government has tripled the fine for not complying with burning restrictions to $1,150, but deliberately set fires are more serious. “Arson would result potentially in criminal charges, and if somebody was convicted, they would see jail

time,” Polak said. Rapid snow-melt and an early warm spell created high fire hazard in areas of dry grass, sparking forest fires north of Fort St. John that forced hundreds of people to evacuate. Evacuees were allowed to go home on Sunday after rain and snow slowed the fires. Crews and aircraft in Alberta and B.C. continue to work on the Siphon Creek fire, which grew to more than 50,000 hectares as it crossed he provincial border. K

TELUS investing in new infrastructure Kitimat in 2016

KITIMAT - TELUS will invest $4 million in new infrastructure and facilities, which includes Kitimat this year to increase wireless and high-speed Internet capacity to meet the rapidly growing demand, ensuring customers stay connected at home, at work and on the go. This significant investment is part of TELUS’ commitment to invest $4.5 billion in British Co-

lumbia through 2019 to extend fibre optic infrastructure directly to thousands of homes and businesses in rural and urban communities, further strengthen wireless service, and support key services including healthcare and education with new technologies. By the end of 2019, TELUS will have invested $51 billion in British Columbia since the year 2000.

“As demand for Internet and wireless services in Kitimat continue to increase, we remain committed to investing in the advanced infrastructure that will not only meet that demand, but also support the future of our digital economy and delivery of critical services such as healthcare and education,” said Lance MacDonald, TELUS General Manager for Northern British Columbia.

“Our local investment of $5 million this year reflects TELUS’ commitment to enhance our highspeed Internet footprint in Kitimat, benefitting generations to come.” “TELUS’ investment in its network equipment supports an important goal in our BCTECH strategy to ensure high-speed Internet access is available to 100 per cent of the province by 2021,” said Minister of Technology, Inno-

Brent Butt sweeps through northwest TERRACE - Brent Butt credits the influence of his mother and father for his inbred comedic talent. While his father was more voluble, his mother took a quieter but more pointed approach to pointing out things about everyday life. “She’d say something like, “check out the shirt on that guy,’” said Butt, best known for Corner Gas, the TV series set in the fictional town of Dog River, Saskatchewan which ran in Canada on the CTV network from 2004 to 2009. Born and raised in the farming community of Tisdale, Saskatchewan, Butt’s the youngest of seven, something alone which required agility to be noticed. “I’d tell stories and jokes to make the others laugh,” Butt recalls. If best known for Corner Gas as well as a long string of standup comedy TV appearances, Butt’s trademark is his deadpan expression. “It kind of goes with whatever feels right,” said Butt. “It’s very much in the moment.” Using the expression and developing the split second timing needed for comedy is a craft Butt’s been practising since his first standup appearance in 1988 in a Saskatoon nightclub. As with many comedians, he’s amassed a repertoire of jokes and stories. “I’d write things down in a little notebook and then try it out onstage to see what

Nowadays, those observations and notes are kept on a phone. Despite a standup career now stretching into three decades, Butt still enjoys the interaction with a live audience. Each one is different, meaning that each performance then takes on its own personality, he says. “You learn to read the audience. You listen to how an audience responds and you adjust as you go along. I know how I’m going to open a show but after that, you respond to the audience,” said Butt.

It’s a freer style of comedy compared to television or movies where scenes are timed to minutes and seconds. “Sometimes you have a very funny scene but if it doesn’t fit, it has to go,” said Butt. Butt’s career has taken him from his home province of Saskatchewan briefly to Calgary and then to Toronto and for a very short period, to Los Angeles. “I did comedy there,” said Butt of his Los Angeles experience. “But I felt displaced, hiding who I really was. I would come to Vancouver to play Punch-

lines, a club that no longer exists, and shows on [Vancouver] island.” Intrigued by Vancouver and facing paperwork problems with staying in Los Angeles, Butt then decided to make the move. “I’ve lived in Vancouver now for 23 years. Never left the city. And Canada has kept me very busy.” Butt brings his standup performance to a number of northwestern and interior venues with his local show set for Terrace on May 26 and Prince Rupert on May 25. PRINCE RUPERT - The Lac La Hache Tomahawks have officially pulled out of the Central Interior Hockey League’s (CIHL) 2016-17 season. Citing the uncertain status of the team’s hockey rink, a lack of player commitment and a demanding schedule, Tomahawks president and goaltender Willie Sellars said that the team couldn’t ice a competitive team this season. Though the 16-game regular season schedule may be too much for Presents the the Tomahawks, the team may try to still enter the Coy Cup Championship, a yearly northern B.C. tournament featuring the best senior men’s teams from around the area, by playing enough exhibition games to warrant an inclusion. “We’ll see what happens with the Lac La Hache rink. PRINCE RUPERT - The second time’s the charm. Or at least it was for Prince Rupert’s own Karlie Fudger, a member of the Dance Academy of Prince Rupert. On Friday, April 22, during the Pacific Northwest Music Festival where the prestigious yearly competition attracts the best young musicans and dancers to Terrace for the weekend, Karlie Fudger was asked to re-compete her lyrical solo. Fudger was then re-adjudicated against the very best in many other arts disciplines such as piano, vocal, harp, speech and guitar for ages 12 and under. The next evening during the festival-ending gala, Fudger was announced as the overall winner of the junior scholarship category. She was awarded the Munson Family Scholarship, worth $250, for her efforts. “This award is a great honour and achievement and a true testament to the hard work and dedication she has applied to her dance training at the academy,” said Dance Academy of Prince Rupert executive Karla Mackereth last week. Earlier in March, the Dance Academy took home 16 trophies at the Prince George Dance Festival.

KEVIN CAMPBELL / thE NORthERN CONNECtOR

By Kevin Campbell The NorTherN coNNecTor

PRINCE RUPERT - It was a difficult bottom line for Northern Savings Credit Union to swallow. But it has been a difficult year. At its annual general meeting (AGM) last Wednesday, May 4, the credit union announced to members and staff at the B.C. Room in the Crest Hotel, a total loss of approximately $2.5 million for 2015, and no dividend declared for members. Northern Savings’ consolidated total assets at the end of 2015 stood at $895 million, a decrease of 9.2 per cent of 2014’s $986 million, which was due to major restructuring and selling of assets. Deposit balances decreased $71.9 million from approximately $859 million to $788 million and operating expenses grew from approximately $24.5 million to $30.6 million. In addition to selling assets in southern B.C., the credit union laid off 12 employees last October as a result of the lost revenue, making the total number of employees at the Prince Rupert-based head office 32 after the layoffs. “These decisions were not easy to make and were not made without deliberation and analysis,” said board chair Flora D’Angelo. “The reason for the major decisions was that the final financial results for 2015 did not meet required metrics to indicate financial stability.” In addition to the layoffs, the selling off of its technology subsidiary and reducing its mortgage portfolio in Victoria and exiting its southern B.C. wholesale lending and deposit business, Northern Savings experienced multiple transitions at the CEO position, with Ken Doleman at the helm from January to March and two interim CEOs, Sharon Stromdahl and Barry Delaney holding the position until the end of December. Most recently, Geoff Grodecki was chosen to lead the organization and holds the CEO position as of May 2, 2016. “I feel very thrilled for the opportunity to be able to work with the team here at Northern Savings, where employees do some really great things,” said Grodecki at the meeting. The CEO was previously chief executive officer of Macklin Credit Union in Macklin, SK and manager of lending at Midale Credit Union in Midale, SK. The branches supported the corporate

restructuring and the focus on strictly northern B.C. priorities and on the organization’s home communities, said D’Angelo. “We did sense at membership meetings an understanding amongst the membership of what has occurred and it seems to have been beneficial to the credit union. At each of the [branch] meetings the message was the same: Our focus is our branches. Our focus is our core business and that’s what we want to go back to,” said D’Angelo. The organization developed new vision and mission statements in 2015, celebrated 75 years of business and contributed $100,000 to community involvement programs.

Noel Martel

December 25, 1934 to April 27, 2016

Loved but not forgotten. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a loving husband, father, father-in-law, grandpa, brother and good friend. Noel passed away after a noble fight against cancer. He was predeceased by his mother Helen, father Napoleon, beloved wife Joyce, granddaughter Melissa, grandsons, Charles and Austin. He is survived by his second wife Phyllis, his four sons, Patrick (Maggie), Dennis (Mary-Ann), Larry (Allison), Victor (Eduarda), his loving grandchildren, Katerina, Sofie, Mercedes, Morgan, Michelle, Steve, Andrew, David, Logan, Katrina, his dear sister Cordelie (Joe), nephews, nieces, cousins and many friends. Noel was born in Bonnyville, Alberta. After serving time in the RCAF stationed in Eastern Canada he decided to move back to the west. He lived most of his life in BC and in 1966 decided to make Terrace his home. He loved fishing on his boat and would take any opportunity to be out at sea. Noel was employed by the BC Forest Service. As a member of the Elks Club for 50 years he made many close friends. The family would like to thank Dr. Moolman, Dr. Fourie, Dave and Dawn Parker, the staff at Terraceview Lodge, Northern Health Home Support, Hospice Society, Meals on Wheels, Terrace Hospital, the many friends and neighbors who provided support. In lieu of flowers, Noel would appreciate donations be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date and will be announced on the radio.

We will miss you dearly but you will always be in our heart.

Patricia Bonnell December 14, 1941 - May 5, 2016

It is with mixed emotion that the family of Patricia Bonnell announce her passing after a debilitating stroke in February 2016. Lovingly remembered by her sons: Daryl (Debbie), and David (Nikole); five grandchildren: Nicole, Sammie, Jourden, Kera and Brayden; siblings: Bill (Rene) Savage, Bert (Sheila) Savage, Harriett (Jacques) Chave, Eileen Storzuk, Colleen Sarnecki and Jim (Kris) Savage, sister in-laws, Pat (Gordon) Demmings and Rodena (Dave) Greenwood; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. Patricia was predeceased by her best friend and loving husband Ray in 2012. Mom was born in Tisdale, Saskatoon and grew up in Osoyoos, BC. She later moved to Kitimat BC in 1957 where she married and raised her family. She moved to Edmonton in 2013 to be close to her sons, daughters in-law and most especially her Grand-kids. Mom was never the same after Dad’s passing and the family takes comfort in knowing they are reunited and together forever. Funeral Service will be held May 17, 2016 at 11am at the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints 14010-74 Street, Edmonton, AB, with viewing starting at 10am. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta.

KITIMAT - Paige Payne from Kitimat is playing with the UNBC Timberwolves in September after spending her Grade 11 year in a competitive soccer academy in Prince George, and competing with a variety of high-level soccer teams for under 18 girls. The season included two showcase tournaments - one in California and one in Vancouver - where university and college coaches come looking to recruit new players. Payne was invited by several universities to play on their teams, including Rhodes College in Memphis, but decided in March to play at UNBC next year. She met coach Neil Sedgwick and said she found him accepting and very knowledgeable and felt it would be valuable to learn from him. “I really liked his style of coaching and just him as a coach… and the girls on the team are so supportive and accepting. I am really excited to play with them next season,” she said. Now age 17, Payne grew up in Kitimat and started playing soccer there at age seven, first in the youth league and then the recreational house league. In 2010, she played on the BC Summer Games northwest team, through which she got to know Terrace players and decided to try out for the Terrace select team. “I thought it would be a good opportunity to take a step up from the soccer [in Kitimat],” Payne said. “The team travels to compete... and I got along with the girls in Terrace really well,” she said. Payne played with the Terrace select team each summer 2011 to 2014, travelling and competing in three big tournaments in the Lower Mainland and winning bronze in the ‘B’ Provincial Cup in 2013. Then in August 2014, she played in a weekend soccer camp run by Vancouver Pros-

She moved to Prince George for her Grade 11 year, September 2014 to July 2015, and lived with a soccer coach there while she attended high school and trained at the soccer academy. “That really helped me grow as a player. It made my soccer IQ get much higher… they try to open your eyes to understand the game at a higher level… it really brings up your tactical game,” Payne said. Towards the end of the Whitecaps academy, Payne was chosen by coaches as a high potential player and given the opportunity to compete in a U18 Vancouver showcase tournament in March 2015. She and 16 others were selected of the players in Whitecaps academies in the Lower Mainland, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and as far as London, Ontario. Their team won three games and tied one against teams from Canada and the United States. During her year at the Prince George academy, Payne also joined the Prince George U18 team, who won bronze in the Provincial A Cup. She tried out for the select team and travelled to a California showcase tournament in November 2014.

“It was probably the most fun showcase, due to the location, but we lost three games and tied one,” Payne said. After the year in Prince George, Payne decided to move back to Kitimat for her Grade 12 year.

“I wanted to graduate alongside the close friends that I grew up with,” she said. “I also wanted spend my last year as a teenager with my supportive and loving family, as I will be moving out at the end of my grad year.”

In September she heads to UNBC where she will major in biomedical science and work towards the goal of becoming a physiotherapist. But for the summer, Payne is back with her Terrace U18 team. “I’ve known these girls since grade six… I think it would be the perfect way to end my youth years in soccer,” she said. Terrace coach Sean Bujtas said the team finished fourth in the provincials last year, and is looking forward to a strong season this year, happy to have Payne back. “She is tenacious,” Bujtas said of Payne. “I have never met such a driven kid on my life. She lives for the sport, she’s always happy to be on the field and the score of the game doesn’t slow her down. She is all heart, and plays and plays and plays. Her drive is what has gotten her where she is.”

Gymnastics club finds a new full-time coach By Kevin Campbell THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - After two years of hard work starting the organization from scratch, the Prince Rupert Gymnastics Association (PRGA) is primed to hire its very first full-time head coach this July. Coming over from the Kitimat Dynamics Gymnastics Club, Bill Tyrwhitt has approximately 25 years of gymnastics experience working with clubs in Ontario, B.C. and elsewhere. Tyrwhitt has also previously worked with ski and diving teams and even offers dryland training to athletic teams and clubs. “He really likes the area and he likes what we’re doing and how we’re growing our club, so he is going to be starting July 1,” said PRGA president Jackie Touchet. The club will be offering summer camps throughout July and the first two weeks of August with Tyrwhitt and in September, a full Monday to Saturday schedule will be offered for ages starting from tots to young adults, including after-school programming for kids in elementary or secondary school. “If they choose, kids will be able to go two or three times per week if

that’s what they’re interested in and we’re going to be running from beginners all the way up to pre-competitive in the fall,” said the president. Plans to train teens or adults aged 15 or over are also in the works so they can volunteer to lead the summer camps for at least a week at a time, while more formal gymnastics certification training for anyone interested is in the works for later on as well. The club is also always on the lookout for people with prior gymnastics experience to join. Operating out of the Museum of Northern B.C.’s Centennial Room since the early spring, the club has grown exponentially with increasing interest from parents and athletes weekly. Touchet expects to be able to grow with the demand. “The final piece of the puzzle is we’re looking to fundraise $60,000 to bring in a new, gym-full set of equipment,” Touchet. The club also bought new mats early this year for $10,000. They operated in the civic centre before moving to the museum where they don’t need to set up and take down equipment. Open registration to join PRGA will be held on May 15 and May 29 from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the club (the museum’s Centennial Room).

Chinese students could study in Terrace schools, college TERRACE - Both the Coast Mountains School District and Northwest Community College could soon be hosting students from China should discussions underway this week in that country pan out. Two officials from each educational body are part of the City of Terrace delegation which is visiting China this week to build on economic and other ties which began when a Chinese economic entity purchased nearly 1,200 acres of the city’s Skeena Industrial Development Park located just south of the airport. The educators toured schools, met with Chinese counterparts and had an appointment with the provincial government’s Beijing-based official who is in charge of educational marketing. Having two college officials in China fits with its plan to vastly increase the college’s foreign student population which stood at four students in the last academic year, says college official Heather Bastin. “We are working on a number of initiatives to increase this number over the coming five years with the goal of 100 international students in 2020,” she said. Bastin said the goal of college officials on the trip is to meet with Chinese educators to understand what might be needed. “For instance, if they want to expand here in specific types of businesses, it would make sense for us to understand that so we can help set up courses specific to those industries, for both Chinese and local students,” she said. “Having more international students on our campuses will help us meet a critical mass so we can offer more programming and more services to all our students, local and international,” Bastin added. Coast Mountains school superintendent Katherine McIntosh, one of the two school district officials on the trip, said the district wants to first understand what’s possible. “[The] soonest we would see families sending students over is for September 2017. We want to make sure that we really invest the time up front so that the experience the students have would be really high quality,” she said. “It’s important the

first time you bring a wave of students over ... because it is that message that goes home to the families in China from that first wave of students that is going to determine if your program thrives or doesn’t.” As it is, one of the main attractions for Chinese students coming here is that the provincial graduation Dogwood program is highly regarded, McIntosh add-

ed.

Key to the school district thinking is having Chinese students stay with local families. “One of the main goals is that they would leave here fluent in the English language. The best way for them to learn the language is for them to be immersed,” McIntosh said. Foreign students going to either high school or college here would

also pay more than Canadian students. For the school district, fees would be approximately $13,000, which is close to the provincial average. “If we brought in a large number of students and had to start adding more divisions for secondary courses, the combined tuition would need to cover those costs. The program has to be self sustaining,”

said McIntosh. For the college, tuition would be three times the amount charged Canadian students. College official Bastin said international students would pay more because they don’t contribute as much to the tax base. “It is common to offset that gap by having higher fees for international students. NWCC fees will still remain

very competitive and attractive for both international and local students,” she said. “This is not about generating revenue from international students. It is about having a critical mass of students on our campus to provide better service and experiences for all of our students.” This would be the second time the college has tried to attract students from China with

the last concerted effort being made more than 10 years ago when thencollege president Stephanie Forsyth struck agreements with Chinese post secondary institutions. That met with limited success. Along with China as a target, the college is working on attracting students from Germany, Bolivia, Colombia and India.
