VOL 119 NO. 19

Rally Day! Page 16

DELLA MALLETTE Grand Forks Gazette

Candidates vying for the lone seat available on Grand Forks City Council will face the electorate at an allcandidates forum this Tuesday, May 17. The forum, hosted by the Boundary Country Regional Chamber of Commerce, will be held at the Grand Forks Secondary School auditorium. The doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the forum running from 7 – 9 p.m. Six of the seven candidates are expected to take the stage: Zak Eburne-Stoodley, Ken Johnston, Cathy Korolek, Kyle Piper, Brian Taylor and Bev Tripp. Candidate Patrick O’Doherty will not be attending, sadly due to a death in the family. Advance questions may be submitted for the candidates by emailing info@boundarychamber.com or calling 250-442-7263. The deadline for submissions is Friday (May 13). All candidates have been offered an opportunity to submit an article and photograph to the Gazette, which will be published in the May 18 issue. Because that is also the day for advance voting, those articles will be available online by Wednesday morning at the latest. No subscription will be required to view those articles. As stated, advance voting is available on Wednesday, May 18 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at City Hall Council Chambers. General voting day is Saturday, May 28, also from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. at City Hall Council Chambers. On general voting day, special voting opportunities will be available to patients or staff of Phoenix Manor Retirement Home, Boundary Lodge Assisted Living, Silver Kettle Village and Boundary Hospital/ Hardy View Lodge/Cottages.

Colours light up the street Members of Grand Forks City Council put their best feet forward to cross one of two new rainbow crosswalks by City Hall—and while it certainly doesn’t compare to the iconic photo of the Beatles walking across the sidewalk in front of Abbey Road Studios, it’s just as legendary a sight for Grand Forks. The rainbow has long been considered the symbol of gay pride, and flags and crosswalks bearing brilliant colours are popping up all over the world to ensure the safety, acceptance, inclusion and dignity of the LGBTQ community.

Border Bruins re-sign coach

GRAND FORKS BORDER BRUINS Submitted to the Gazette

The Grand Forks Border Bruin Association is pleased to announce that the team has reached a multi-year agreement with head coach and general manager Emery Olauson. In his first year coaching the Bruins, Olauson led the 2015-2016 team to their first playoff appearance in 19 years. The Bruins had a season record of 23-24-5, finishing third in the five-team Neil Murdoch division. They went on to defeat Castlegar in the first round of playoffs in an exciting six-game series before falling to the Beaver Valley Nitehawks in five. Olauson was selected by his

peers as both the Neil Murdoch division and KIJHL Coach of the Year. Following the election of a new board of directors at the Bruins’ annual general meeting on April 8, President Dan Koftinoff said that resigning the coach was the first priority of the incoming board. “We recognized that there was a risk that other opportunities would present themselves to the coach if we didn’t act quickly. We feel that there’s plenty of room to advance the team, and based on last year’s performance that Emery is the man we wanted to lead the way. “Talks began within days of the AGM, and we’re very happy that the final terms were agreed to over

the weekend. Having a multi-year deal in place gives some stability to the whole organization, and we think that stability will also help immensely with recruiting players for upcoming seasons.” Preparations are already underway for a spring camp in Cochrane, Alta June 3-5. The Grand Forks Border Bruins (www.borderbruins.ca) are a community-owned Junior B hockey club. The team was an inaugural member of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League, and has played in more KIJHL seasons than any other team, having missed only two seasons since 1969. Contact Dan Koftinoff at 250-442-1201, or dankoftinoff@ telus.net, for further information.

Most of us have felt the terrible impact a cancer diagnosis brings whether it is yourself, a family member or friend who is or has been stricken. Every year thousands of people gather to raise money and support for research and you can join them too. Once again, it is time to Relay For Life. Relay For Life is a team-based fundraising event in support of the Canadian Cancer Society. We relay to support cancer survivors and their caregivers, remember loved ones lost and to fight back against a disease that affects so many. Anyone can participate! You can sign up as an individual, or part of a team and join for the day; or as a survivor or caregiver, you can register free and participate in the opening Celebrate Ceremony. Boundary Country Relay For Life will be held June 4 at Grand Forks City Park. This year, local organizers are experimenting with a shorter time frame from 4 p.m. – 10 p.m. after receiving some feedback from participants that the event was too long and often participants were unable to stay the entire day. This way, everyone has the opportunity to experience the event in its entirety and still have time for their other commitments. Typically, the Boundary Country Relay For Life has around 17 teams and more than 20 additional people who participate as survivors and/ or caregivers. At a minimum, a team requires only one person (the captain). There have been teams with as few as one and as many as 15, which is the cap for a team. In the event a team has more than 15 participants, organizers still encourage everyone to register, participate and fundraise together. This year organizers are finding it more difficult to attract participants to the event. They are hoping with the shorter time frame more people will be able to commit to the event. “We do our best to get the word out via social media, print and radio but I think you really have to talk to someone who has participated to get a “feel” for the event and why you should come join us!” said Jennifer Edwards, the Boundary event’s leadership chair. The survivor’s lap is how each relay begins. Edwards explained. “It’s inspiring to see all these amazing men and women who are benefiting from the work the Canadian Cancer Society does—not only surviving, but living longer, healthier and happier lives. With the change in time frame, the Survivors Lap will begin around 4:15 p.m. on event day.” The requirements for a team are quite relaxed, with the main objective being to have a good time while raising some money. Participants can choose a lap/distance goal for themselves, but there is no minimum requirement. Ideally, there should be one participant from each team on the track at all times and participants are encouraged to raise $150 each toward their team goal but often teams fundraise as a unit with the total amount raised being credited to the team rather than any one person. This year, organizers have again worked very hard and you can expect to see the usual relay ceremonies such as the opening survivor celebration, and the closing Luminary Ceremony. The concession will be up and running for the duration of the event and once again, Festival Espresso will be present to provide hot and cold beverages. Organizers are also busy collecting some amazing items that people can bid on at the silent auction with all proceeds going to Relay For Life, and there’s the opportunity to walk away with some cash from the 50/50 draw. Survivors, individuals and anyone else can sign up and register online at www.relayforlife.ca/boundarycountry with the option to register as an individual or to create or join a team. While there is no deadline for registration, organizers encourage teams to sign up early so they can be given as much information as possible before event day and answer any questions they may have. If people prefer to register offline, they can contact Bev or Jennifer at 250-443-1484 who will be happy to deliver paper registration forms, or simply come down to City Park on event day and register at the appropriate booth.

Colours of the rainbow are beautiful to see

Social media lit up this weekend as people began to notice two rainbow-coloured crosswalks by City Hall. The rainbow is now recognized the world over as the symbol of gay pride, but this is a bold, new step for Grand Forks as it makes a declaration of equality and inclusivity of the LGBTQ community. Many of the comments were positive, but as always, there were questions. Cost of the crosswalks is a non-issue. Every year the city pays to upgrade crosswalks and lines: red and white, or rainbow, no matter. Paint is paint, tint it whatever colour you want. Yes, city council knew about the change, and encouraged it. Some confusion ensues because of all those letters: LGBTTIQQ2S seems to be the trending now. It means “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual, Transgendered, Intersexual, Queer, Questioning, 2-Spirited.“ Whatever letter you feel represents you, shouldn’t matter. We’re all just human beings trying to be true to our own selves. Unfortunately, there is still much awareness necessary; a few crosswalks seem may be a small step but it’s a very welcome one indeed.

Public trust seriously shaken with stories of tax evasion From the hill RICHARD CANNINGS Spring has sprung across Canada, and with the return of the warmer weather we have other annual traditions that come with this time of the year—hockey playoffs, getting together with family at Easter and getting the garden ready for summer. Another spring activity is one that we don’t tend to look forward to but still needs to be done: filing of our income taxes. Whether we do our own taxes or get a professional to prepare

them, the vast majority of Canadians take to this task every year and pay their fair share. They do their part to help ensure that the society that we have helped to build continues to keep providing for all of us. But as we have seen recently in the news, some Canadians have both the intent and means to avoid or evade paying their fair share. We have seen the Panama Papers story, where thousands of wealthy people around the world have used shady tax havens to avoid paying their taxes. We have seen the case of KPMG, which is accused of having used tax avoidance and evasion strategies for the accounts of a number of its clients. In this case, the Canada Rev-

enue Agency allegedly offered amnesty to multimillionaire clients caught using their strategy on the Isle of Man. This allowed the clients to be free from any future civil or criminal prosecution, including any penalties or fines. All that the clients had to do was agree to repay what they owed. We’d all like it if a government agency would bend over backwards to help us if we actively tried to avoid paying our taxes, but I think that most of us have had very different experiences— and that’s not a bad thing. Canada Revenue Agency should be vigilant in ensuring that everyone pays their fair share and should be treating everyone the same in that way.

This is a matter of simple fairness, something that we expect to come from our government. I believe that all Canadians must be treated fairly, regardless of income. My New Democrat colleagues and I are determined to target tax evasion and take the necessary measures to protect the integrity of our tax system. We will continue to hold the Liberal government to account to ensure that it walks the talk and reinvests additional resources to target tax evasion, as they promised to do during the election campaign. The government must maintain public trust, but that has been seriously shaken with these recent stories.

Letters

Opinion

to the editor

Garbage is killing our planet

Editor, The Gazette: I would like to expand on Ed Mathews’ letter regarding the pallet nails, and the overwhelming ads about beautiful B.C.—which I find misleading. Misleading because so much of this province is succumbing to industrial exploitation and litter pollution. Almost everywhere I go, I find garbage, plastic bottles, endless number of alcohol bottles, fast food containers, household refuse (including diapers), old beds, concrete, old couches etc., almost anything including the kitchen sink and sometimes these illegal dump sites are situated close to creeks, rivers and lakes. Some of this garbage will take thousands of years to decompose and a percentage toxic to all species! This is a problem we could solve without the need for political will or for big business to step forward and take responsibility for the products they sell to us. Last year I had the privilege of watching a film called The Messenger, a film about the plight of the world’s songbirds. During this film the audience is

shown a segment of old footage dating back to 1958, where the Chinese government ordered all of its people to get out into the streets and fields to wave banners, flags and create noise. The government ordered this action to eradicate a species which was foraging on the country’s agricultural crops. The government of China succeeded! The birds were forced to keep flying until they were so exhausted they fell from the skies by the millions. While watching this segment of the film I felt a wave of tears overwhelm me, but sometime later I realized the power of the people. What if we could use this same power to conserve, protect and create? What if we all decided to begin cleaning up our planet? If a few, then a hundred, then a million of us stood up for the planet and took action, I think we could create a clean and healthy environment. I put forth an appeal, asking that we act accordingly to eliminate litter from our waters and forests. We can do it. A lot of garbage is lethal, strangling wildlife and in-

gested by wildlife resulting in death! Garbage tossed out along the roadside may find its way into a river system and on into the oceans. If it doesn’t become part of one of the ocean islands of garbage it may be consumed by any number of marine wildlife, usually causing death. If it doesn’t become part of the island of garbage or sink to the ocean floor, it will join 46,000 other pieces of human garbage for every square mile of ocean. Some varieties of crustaceans and zooplankton are now using plastics as part of their very structure. That might sound advantageous but the predators that feed on these crustaceans succumb to the plastic from either the toxins, inability to digest or congestion of breathing structures. We are killing and smothering the planet with garbage. All we need is the will to do what is right for us, our children and the other species that share this planet with us. Please stop littering. Roy Schiesser, Grand Forks

Funding supports CLSS projects

Editor, The Gazette: The Christina Lake Stewardship Society (CLSS) would like to thank Christina Lake director Grace McGregor for the funding she has provided through the grant-in-aid budget. This funding of $2,500 will allow the CLSS to thank the community for their contribution to Lake Clean-Up Day. This event, coordinated by the society, cleans up the roads, streets and shorelines around Christina Lake, and showcases to visitors the standard to which we hold ourselves in keeping our lake clean. Many people in the area pick up litter on a continuous basis, and this funding will provide cash prizes, and a free barbecue

www.grandforksgazette.ca A5

to thank these great stewards of our community. Also, CLSS would like to thank Director McGregor for the additional $2,000 that was allocated from the grant-inaid budget for the Christina Lake Watershed Management Plan Annual Review that is planned for Dec. 6, 2016. This event brings together all levels of government, biologists, environmentalists, forestry professionals other non-profit organizations, and members of the community to discuss environmental issues in Christina Lake. This conference also showcases the work the CLSS has been doing within the Christina Lake Watershed, and provides

direction for future initiatives, and collaboration. In 2015, over 80 people attended from all over the Kootenay-Boundary area, and the funding provided by the grant-in-aid allows us to provide lunch and rent the Christina Lake Community Hall for this great event. In closing, the CLSS would like to thank Director McGregor for her continued support of our many programs and projects that allows us to encourage our community to be the best stewards they can be, while protecting our watershed for generations to come. Brenda LaCroix, Stewardship Coordinator/ Project Manager for CLSS

WE BUY & SELL WE BUY & SELL PREOWNED VEHICLES AND RV’S

Public should have been consulted first Editor, The Gazette: This is about the new fire truck. First of all, I am not sure that we needed such an expensive, fancy one. Secondly, usually when someone buys something they figure out how to pay for it BEFORE buying it! As this purchase involves tax dollars, it would have been nice if the public was consulted. Before being slapped with an additional tax (and that is what this levy is), the public should have been consulted. So the people living within the city limits will pay two-thirds or more for the fire truck but the people living outside the limits will have access to its use. That

sounds fair. The people living in a mansion pay as much as the ones living in an 800 square foot home on a tiny lot. This is very fair indeed! I believe it is past time for the council and the mayor to realize that the money they are using so freely is not theirs—it belongs to the taxpayers and that the taxpayers should be consulted over a million-dollar purchase. What council should realize is that the last council got ousted over this same kind of thing. I have a long memory for some things and come the next election, I WILL remember this. Lynne M. Petersen Grand Forks

‘She made us do it’ a puerile statement Editor, The Gazette: Excuse me, members of city council. “She made us do it”? That was very puerile. What you did was neither responsible nor diplomatic. It certainly did not show any respect for the taxpayers that voted for

you. Or maybe you are just getting some bad advice? “Let them eat cake!” Now who said that a long time ago? “Ah, let them pay more taxes!” Bad show. Angelica Herlihy, Grand Forks

Golf club challenges others to donate Editor, The Gazette: During the afternoon of Thursday, May 5, the Windermere Valley Men’s Club held its weekly competition. Our thoughts were not on golf, but rather on the families displaced by the fires raging in northern Alberta. At the conclusion of the event, our membership decided to donate the prize money that would normally have gone to the afternoon’s winners to the disaster relief efforts currently being undertaken. Al Wittke, a long-standing member of our club, also donated

$2,000 to the Salvation Army. Al lived in Fort McMurray in the Beacon Hill subdivision. His former residence has burned to the ground. The Windermere Valley Men’s Club is challenging men’s and women’s golf clubs across B.C. and Alberta to do the same. Take the prize money from one afternoon of golf to assist our friends and neighbours in the Fort McMurray area. Dean Midyette President, Windermere Valley Men’s Club Windermere, B.C.

Respect important wildlife areas makes it very clear in his introduction, “The Boundary must be considered as one of the best mule and whitetail deer areas of the province.” Spalding then highlights the importance of the interior Douglas fir zone by listing 13 shrub species critical to wintering mule and whitetail deer. The Douglas fir zone immediately adjacent to the ponderosa pine grassland is the most critical area for wintering ungulates as it is an important refuge mid to late winter from deep snow and cold temperatures and provides adequate thermal cover with minimal snow cover allowing freedom of movement and access to feed. Responsible logging practices demanded selective logging to open the forest canopy to facilitate the propagation of important shrub species critical to ungulates February-March, the critical time in their yearly struggle to survive. Instead the new benchmark for logging practices throughout the Boundary is large clearcuts especially so in the lodgepole pine forest, a few meaningless standing trees and large piles of wooly debris a major reason the moose and pine martin populations have

crashed province wide. What is the measure of Minister Thomson’s message that appeared in a Black Press article titled “B.C. Wildlife Management Overhaul Coming” that appeared in the Grand Forks Gazette on April 20? Thomson acknowledged more needs to be done. He said an additional $12 million in his ministry budget this year is to support wildlife inventory and habitat improvement. Will there be an announcement that the ongoing logging by Interfor in the interior Douglas fir zone adjacent to the Gilpin Grasslands will immediately subscribe to the minister’s former parliamentary secretary, Mike Morris’ recommendation that appeared in his August 15, 2015 report titled “Getting the Balance Right: Improving Wildlife Habitat Management in British Columbia”: “Simply put, new strategies are required to support impacted wildlife populations and the needed habitat to allow species to recover.” Interfor—please listen to the better angles of your corporate board nature and respect important wildlife areas. Barry Brandow, Grand Forks

Editor, The Gazette: We are coming into a municipal byelection in May, and it’s an important one. Some of the previous council are trying to get back in. This is to remind residents of just a few highlights of the previous city council’s financial outlays: • Implemented the Universal Water Meter Program at a published estimate of $1.3 million—just for the first phase. • Terminated the contract of Doug Allin November 2014 with approximately $192,000 in severance pay. (CBC news release www.cbc.ca/news/ canada/british-columbia/ doug-allin-grand-forks-caore-hired-after-200k-severancepayout-1.3036646) • Urban Systems (a professional service providing strategic planning, engineering, environmental science, and urban design services, including asset management) was paid over $780,000 from January 2012 to December 2014 in approximately 45 payments (per Freedom of Information release June 5, 2015). As you can see, just on these few items, a staggering amount has been spent… but is any of

it justifiable? There has been much talk in city management and council of the failings, pressures and costs of getting our crumbling infrastructure updated. It goes on and on. But what has actually been done? Short answer: virtually nothing in the two terms of previous city government… six whole years. Why all this talk and no action? And why the millions and millions spent on other useless ventures? Even on the rare occasion when they did actually replace some infrastructure (repaved 68th Ave for over $480,000), they did not replace the water and sewer infrastructure beneath. Makes no sense. Why spend almost $800,000 on professional consulting and relatively nothing on the infrastructure? Why all the small payments to Urban Systems? What happened to the millions of dollars from the Slag Fund? Where did it go? How much money was spent on the Water Meter Program? How much did it really cost? City management needs to openly and publicly account for all of this. Why can’t we

just go in there and ask for some information and get it? Why do we have to resort to official Freedom of Information requests? Why all the secrecy? Starting to see a pattern in all this? The previous council appears to have started a financial trend at City Hall: ‘We can spend all we want, and we don’t have to disclose it.’ Tremendous, reckless waste. Secrecy. Another issue: some members of the former council did not live within the city. They greatly influenced the lives of people in the city, yet themselves weren’t subject to the bylaws that they voted on. We are forced by them to adhere to sprinkling regulations, to get water meters, and yet they are immune to these regulations. This is kind of nutty…council members should all be subject to the bylaws they create. Through the bylaws they voted on and enforced, they helped create a fractured community. When voting in the next election, please keep all of this in mind. Want more of the same? Jack Koochin, Grand Forks

Editor, The Gazette: The management of the Boundary Forest has no connection to forestry practices taught at our colleges and universities. The most recent example of logging practices contemptuous of the public interest is the current logging in the Douglas fir zone, the important area for wintering deer immediately adjacent to the Gilpin grasslands. The logging prescription Interfor was honour-bound to follow is well described on page 52 of the July 2008 Draft Management Plan for the proposed Gilpin-Morrissey Wildlife Management Area. “The direction from the Kootenay Boundary Land Use Plan assigned the Gilpin landscape unit an Intermediate Biodiversity Option citing the important ungulate winter range, red, and blue listed species and high ecosystem representation. Forest development plans must therefore place an emphasis on maintaining natural levels of biodiversity and minimize the risk of eliminating native species.” D.J. Walk raises awareness of depression Gazette Staff

To raise awareness about the often taboo subject of depression, a B.C. man is walking across Canada. Boyd Lalonde from Sechelt on the Sunshine Coast started out on Vancouver Island on Feb. 18 of this year and made it all the way across Vancouver Island and over to the mainland before recently passing through the Boundary on his way across Canada. For Lalonde, who was originally from Ontario, this will be his second crossCanada Walk. The first walk took place a few years ago (2013-15) as therapy for a deep depression. This time around he is doing it to raise awareness about depression. “I started my journey to heal from a depression that was triggered from a separation,” said Lalonde. “It had gotten so bad I tried to kill myself. I had got into drugs to deal with the depression. I went into rehab to clean that up. After that my depression was worse because I had to deal with the fact that I did drugs for six months and still didn’t have a chance (to recover).” In 2013 Lalonde took a bottle of pills, fortunately Lalonde’s (adult) son happened to come home early from a weekend outing and ended up saving his life by inducing vomiting and calling paramedics. “I didn’t think of the pain I would’ve left behind and what it would’ve done to my family,” said Lalonde. “At that point I made a decision I had to change my lifestyle. So I closed my businesses and gave everything away and went for a walk to heal. It took me almost two and a half years to walk across Canada the first time.” Lalonde, who is 52 years old, told the Gazette he is hoping this time to get through his cross-Canada trip in one go. The first time he had walked from Vancouver all the way to Canmore, Alberta near Calgary when he was attacked by a wolf. He fended the wolf off with bear spray. He was then told by park rangers that it was too dangerous along the highway due to wolfpacks and he was not allowed to continue. “I had some friends in Canmore and

they picked me up and brought me to their place,” he said. “That evening we were evacuated due to the floods. I stayed for three months and helped them get back into their house which delayed my journey. So that put me right in the prairies during winter.” With -45 weather and heavy winds, Lalonde decided not to continue and went back to Ontario to be with family. He took up the journey again in spring from where he left off and finished up in 2015. With his second cross-Canada walk, Lalonde chose to leave the same day (Feb 18) three years later (2016) and has already walked the Sunshine Coast, Vancouver Island and from the Tsawassen Ferry Terminal (by Vancouver) to his current location near Rock Creek. “I’m doing it for awareness of depression this time,” said Lalonde. “The first time I walked across Canada I realized how much of an inspiration I started to become to many different individuals. I did a few talks to different mental health groups I was invited to and I started to get that feeling of helping other people get through their depression. This time I decided because of the healing I received the first time around that this time I would give back to those who have been so kind to me and those suffering like I did from depression.” Lalonde says the second time around has been great thus far. He has been able to meet up with many of the same people he met the first time and has met new people as well. He said people are always coming up to him on the road and talking about their own experiences with depression. “It’s amazing how many people open up and share things with a stranger when they won’t talk about it with their family,” he said. “They hide in pain without letting them know. I’ve had people break down in front of me and be so overwhelmed with inspiration.

I’m able to direct them to some sites they can go to get help.” Lalonde said that there is still a great stigma around depression. “It’s an illness you can’t see,” he said. “Most people are afraid to open up and about it and share. They suffer in silence. Many people isolate themselves and go

deeper into their depression. I want to let people know there is help out there. The number one thing I tell individuals is that having the ability to share with friends and family is one of the biggest breakthroughs you can have when suffering depression. “I also direct them to sites such as Bell’s Let’s Talk, which is a site I hold dearly.” After spending a few days in Grand Forks visiting friends, Lalonde plans to start his walk back up again where he left off near Rock Creek. He should be in Grand Forks this week or next. You can follow along with his blog and see photos and videos from Lalonde’s journey at canforrest.blogspot.ca. closed down. Towns and mines all over B.C. were suddenly abandoned. Unfortunately, most traces of our past have disappeared over time. The boom and bust towns that sprang up during the gold, silver and copper booms have all but disappeared. Other than a few historic sites like Barkerville, the ghost towns are reduced to the rotted remains of buildings. The forest has taken them back almost everywhere. The only things that remain are the mines and the old railways. Blasted out of solid rock through the mountains, many underground mines and rail beds still remain. Sadly these things too are disappearing. Over time mines are being reclaimed by nature or by man. Land is developed and slowly but surely these things too will vanish. We have many pictures of the old ghost towns but we know very little about the mines. If you ever get the chance to visit a historic mine, you would be amazed by the work these people did by blasting through solid rock and extracting minerals using very basic tools for the most part. Many traces of these tools and methods

are still in these mines abandoned over 100 years ago. There are, however, many dangers in visiting these underground mines and they are difficult to access. Many people are not comfortable in dark, damp environments navigating tight spaces, loose rocks and unstable structures. I have decided to visit as many mines as I possibly can, document them, and film these mines. This way anybody who is interested in these historic mines can visit them online, both now and in the future. I have a YouTube channel called “Exploring Abandoned Mines In B.C.” (http:// bit.ly/BCMINES) and I will be posting a video of a new mine there every week at noon on Friday. I have also started writing this newspaper column so I can share with you this exciting passion I have for sharing this rich piece of history with anyone who is interested.

Frank Schlichting is a Grand Forks resident passionate about history and exploring. He assumes his own risks when exploring; he makes no representation regarding the safety or advisability of entering onto any mine site. This Grand Forks Gazette column is for entertainment purposes only.

April 15 is World Arts Day and also Leonardo da Vinci’s Birthday. Boundary District Arts Council, gallery 2 and Grand Forks and District Public Library decided that was a great day to open the17th Annual Boundary Showcase of Arts and Culture as we combined all our efforts to host two successful weeks of art and craft displays, school tours and performances. There were almost 80 displays of community exhibits at gallery 2 open for all to come and see. It is always amazing to see the variety and talent of local participants. Joie Pare of Westbridge, a long-time sketcher but new painter, won the 1st Annual Viewer’s Choice with her painting, “What Was.” There were 196 students/10 classes from Hutton and Perley elementary schools, including two groups of homeschoolers. Mission Statement

Thank You

of Boundary Community Hospice Association The purpose of the Association is to provide active and compassionate hospice and palliative care services for persons and their families facing death or loss and to provide the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual support necessary to maintain dignity and worth of the individual.

a big thank you to all the residents of Grand Forks for their amazing support of Hospice.

What do Hospice volunteers do? • Visit homes, hospital and long-term care facilities, free of charge. • Offer friendship, support and companionship to persons experiencing a life-threatening illness, and their families and caregivers. • Grief support, following death.

We proudly support hospice.

Provide practical help: • Timeout for caregivers. • Companionship (read, play cards, write letters, etc.) • Driving • Help with office work in the Hospice office, fundraising.

I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me. I wish I didn’t work so hard.

Sincere gratitude to the helping hands of the Boundary Hospice.

Volunteers are persons who:

I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends. I wish that I had let myself be happier.

The challenge begins with drawing and designing the piece. Then, detailed planning or to work intuitively? Realistic, representational or abstract, and to what degree?” Quilters are Stephanie Alcock, Diana Bartelings, Emilie Belak, Laura Jean Cuthbert, Arielle Gerencser, Helen Hatch, Susan Meanley, Anne RaynerGould, Karen Thatcher, Florence Vatkin and Sheila Vockeroth. Community All for Mom Friday was a beautiful day to set up outside to prepare for Mother’s Day, and people supported by Sunshine Valley Community Services got extra support in the form of flower arranging advice from Boundary-Similkameen MLA Linda Larson and Hannah Bees Flowers and Gifts. Prior to entering provincial politics, Larson was a florist; she is now the Parliamentary Secretary for Accessibility to the Minister of Social Development and Social Innovation. It was natural to see her assisting with making arrangements for Mother’s Day. The flowers were provided by Hannah Bees.

Daily Physical Activity for Children Physical activity is good for your child’s health now and in the future. Benefits of physical activity include: strong bones and muscles, healthy heart, lungs and arteries, improved coordination, balance, posture and flexibility, maintaining a healthy weight, reduced risk of chronic disease such as heart disease, cancer and type-2 diabetes and later in life improved learning and attention.

Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines Canadian guidelines recommend that children aged: 0 - 1 years should be active several times throughout the day, such as floor play 1 - 4 years should be physically active for at least 180 minutes each day, with activity spread across the day 5 - 17 years should accumulate at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day. Moderate-intensity physical activity – should be able to walk and talk, but not sing all that well; would be about a 5 or 6 on a scale of 10. Vigorous-intensity physical activity – should not be able to carry on a conversation, should be huffing and puffing and breaking a sweat; would be about a 7 or 8 on a scale of 10. Physical activity isn’t necessarily ‘exercise’. Your child doesn’t have to play an organized sport or do push-ups to benefit. Opportunities for free outdoor play are just as important and valuable. It does help, though, if you make daily plans for when and where your child can be active. www.healthyfamiliesbc.ca Success By 6 supports parents and communities in creating healthy, nurturing environments for our youngest children, so that by age 6, they are physically, socially, and emotionally ready to succeed in school. The goal of Success By 6 is to better the lives of our Boundary area children in our families and enhancing our communities.

Success by 6® is a locally based initiative in partnership with:

Phoenix Foundation of the Boundary Communities • Ministry of Children & Family Development • Grand Forks Credit Union

More than 50 4H members from the Boundary District gathered at the Rock Creek Fair Grounds this past weekend for the annual 4H Rally Day. As part of the 4H program, members learn to and practice how to judge livestock classes, create educational displays and do demonstrations on subjects that interest them. The competitions teach them how to speak in public, make informed decisions and expand and share the things they’ve learned. The participating members included children between six and 19 years-old from clubs in Grand Forks and Rock Creek. The top junior Aggregate judges for the entire rally, included Wade MacDonald, first, Grand Forks 4H members Megan Siemens in second place and Raya Burch in third. From magic to music effortlessly For the Grand Forks Gazette

Fascinated by his grandpa’s sleight of hand tricks at the young age of eight, Nathan Vogel wanted to learn more about this intriguing art form. He discovered he was, in his own words, “hooked” on magic tricks after receiving a magic kit for a gift. A trip to a Vancouver magic store when he was about 10 confirmed his passion for the craft and he began to practice on his parents while living in Slocan. After gaining some confidence, he started small by doing little shows at his school. Making things disappear and doing card tricks are the staple of any good magic show, and as Vogel continued to improve his skill, his passion grew. Living in Grand Forks since 2008, Vogel has performed at

many backyard birthday parties and outdoor shows locally over the past decade and has honed his show to have a comfortable flow that includes bright and lively gags and jokes, as well as sleight of hand and card tricks for kids parties. The adult show he has created includes all the above but has a more intellectual bend to it to keep the older audience engaged and entertained. When asked what he likes about magic, Vogel is quick to respond. He enjoys the reactions such as the “marvelous smiles” from his audience, the ability to encourage younger kids to learn and appreciate magic and the fact that he is keeping an age-old art form from becoming lost. The applause is nice too. Vogel draws inspiration from icons like David Copperfield and dreams of going

to Las Vegas when he turns 21 to see the different magic acts and aspires to eventually have his own show there. Although Vogel is not part of any organized magic society or group, he does socialize with a few friends who also happen to be magicians. Being a small group of individuals who are passionate about the craft brings its challenges, but Vogel says they share techniques and camaraderie. A multi-talented young man, Vogel is also a musician who can play several instruments. In this genre, he began plunking away at his mother’s piano at the age of two following her lead in classical music. By age three to four, he was enrolled in lessons and performed a few recitals after which he began to play more by ear with traditional lessons falling by the wayside and a bit of parental tutoring tak-

ing its place. Coming from a musically inclined family has its benefits. Vogel learned to play the guitar from his father and went on to teach himself trumpet and drums as well as participate in his school band. Vogel also has a fascination and love for vinyl records. After discovering a box of old records and asking about them, he began to collect them. He feels the sound is softer, more enjoyable coming from a record. With a collection of about 4,000 albums so far, Vogel is happy some of the current artists are considering releasing their music in LP format. Inspired by greats such as Sir Elton John, Sir Paul McCartney, Beatles along with newer bands such as Aurora, a Norwegian pop band, Paramour and many Canadian songwriters and singers, Vogel also enjoys writing songs to share his thoughts. When asked what

New online service launched for hunters SUBMITTED

to the Grand Forks Gazette

Effective April 25, the province has launched a new online portal that makes it easy for hunters to access a range of eservices, including hunting licences and applications for limited entry hunting (LEH) draws, Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Steve Thomson announced last week. The B.C. hunting portal gives hunters instant access to apply for their resident hunting credentials and the new Fish and Wildlife ID, which replaces the old hunter identification number. Meanwhile, the new online LEH system offers interactive maps and a simple interface that instantly gives hunters information

on upcoming hunting opportunities across the province. With the move online, the province is no longer issuing paper LEH applications and will not accept paper LEH applications after 2016. Hunters without Internet access can still visit and Service BC, FrontCounter BC or an authorized vendor to apply in person for the Fish and Wildlife ID or an LEH draw. Over time, the province will add other e-services like licences, compulsory reporting forms, guide licences and reporting, and applications to accompany a non-resident hunter. The launch of the hunting portal follows up on a commitment that Thomson made in 2013. Moving hunting services

online also acts on government’s commitment to reduce red tape for British Columbians and is part of transformation for government’s natural resource services under the natural resource permitting project.

Quick Facts:

• LEH awards hunting authorizations by lottery. These authorizations allow resident hunters to hunt for a specific species, in a designated area, during specified time periods. • Last year, more than 83,000 resident hunters applied for a range of LEH draws and more than 23,000 authorizations were issued. • There are more than 100,000 resident hunters in the province.

Joseph (Joey) Popoff After a courageous battle, Joseph (Joey) Popoff succumbed to cancer on April 30, 2016 in Grand Forks, B.C. at the age of 66. Joey was born to parents Joe and Mary Popoff on March 16, 1950 in Grand Forks. He was a dedicated hard worker, spending most of his time as a heavy equipment operator, building roads in northern B.C. He was much sought after for his expertise in this field. He retired in the early fall of last year due to his illness. Joey had a passion for his “scratch tickets” and trips into the woods for firewood. Always evident was his love and dedication to his family and friends at home, and in the north. Joey is survived by his daughter Dana (Matt), grandsons, Ashton and Devin, former wife and close friend Karot his sisters Nina Trabenik and Irene (John) Pankoff and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father Joe, mother Mary and his daughter Danita. May your firewood always be stacked high Joey, till we meet again. A celebration of life will be held on the 25th of June at 5425 Hughes Road, John and Irene Pankoff’s residence at 3:00 p.m.

It’s time to start “fun-raising.” Yes that’s right, “run-raising,” and yes it does involve fund raising, but it also includes a lot of fun. The Grand Forks Fall Fair doesn’t just happen. Besides, hundreds and even thousands of hours of volunteer time in organizing and preparing months ahead of the August event, it takes a significant amount of money for it to happen. Things like exhibitor’s handbooks, entertainment, advertising, rentals, prize money and more are needed to make the fall fair a success. In an effort to raise funds for a fair that ends up in the black, the fall fair committee has two current fundraising events. The second annual remation Shuck and rns Cluck will be happen-

We often take for granted the ability to bend over, reach for something overhead or getting up out of a chair. However, for many individuals, even simple movement can be painful. As we age we gradually lose our range of motion and flexibility. Maintaining flexibility is as important as cardiovascular and muscular fitness. Stretching regularly is key to active mobility. Gisela Ko has designed a program “Stretching For Mobility” to accommodate individuals who may require assistance in order to maintain flexibility. Participants will perform stretching exercises sitting in a chair or using a chair for support. Stretching for Mobility takes place in Grand Forks in the Arena Viewing Room on Tuesday mornings from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. and Friday afternoons from 1 – 2 p.m. Gisela takes her class out to Christina Lake on Wednesdays from 1 - 2 at the Christina Lake Community Hall. Corinne Olsen offers challenging classes on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings at the Christina Lake Community Hall from 9 - 10 a.m. Corinne incorporates step, pilates, weights and more to provide a full body workout. Registration is not required, drop-ins welcome. Achieving fitness

The Christina Lake Community Association and fitness instructor Corinne Olsen are hosting three (by donation) fitness classes promoting “Achievable Fitness” for those individuals looking for a moderate exercise program and for those recovering from injury or may have physical limitations.

Join Corinne on June 2, 6t and 9 at the Christina Lake Community Hall from 10:15 - 11 a.m. as she guides participants through a 45-minute moderate circuit program designed to improve strength, flexibility, balance and cardio conditioning. So, mark the dates on your calendar. Find some comfortable clothing, running shoes and bring your enthusiasm as you take part in one or all three of the Achievable Fitness classes taking place in Christina Lake. The hope is to implement this program on a regular basis in fall of 2016. *** For more information on programs and activities give us a call at 250-442-2202 or email us at gfplay@rdkb.com. Getting down to their soccer roots

The Boundary Youth Soccer Association U9 players had a round robin of fun during a special Grassroots Festival at Perley Elementary School over the weekend. The festival included a series of fun soccer-related drills, was hosted by BC Soccer Regional Grassroots Development Tutor, Patrick Prele. The event allows coaches the opportunity to learn new teaching techniques and the players to learn new skills, said Jeff Olsen of the BYSA. The next festival will be held for the U11, U13 and U16 teams on June 5. (Clockwise from top left:) BYSA players Lex Katasonoff, left, and Thomas Mitchell, enjoying a drill. Best friends Hailey Geisler left, and Brooklyn Sterling cooling off between stations. Patrick Prele, BC Soccer Regional Grassroots Development Tutor, gave the players some words of encouragement at the end of the festival. Parent volunteer Ian Mitchell serves up some refreshment to the thirsty soccer players.
