Rimbey Lions Club celebrates 70th charter BY TREENA MIELKE The Lions Club of Rimbey celebrated their 70th anniversary charter last weekend. The event was punctuated with award presentations, visiting, entertainment and fun. “It was a great evening,” said president Stephan Van Oostrom. “A very nice evening with lots of neighbouring clubs in attendance.” The Lions district governor, Hank Hoekstra was the guest speaker. The Rimbey Lions Club was organized in 1946 under the banner of Lions International. Since that time the Lions Club has had many goals geared towards improving the quality of life in the community. Van Oostrom, who has been a Lions member for 10 years, said he enjoys being a member of the club because of its commitment to give back to the community. “I like to do good things for the community and the Lions club does a lot of good thing.” The club has helped people of all ages and from all walks of life through providing funding and support for a variety of projects and activities. The Lions playground, the food booth at the rodeo grounds, ball diamonds, Project 84, the skate park, walking trails, soccer parks and youth centre are among several of the projects the club has been involved with. The club also held the Lions rodeo from 1955 to 1965. The club also holds pancake breakfasts, helps out with blood donor clinics, provides scholarships, supports the handi van and the RV campground. The club has lent financial support to arena expansion and the installation of artificial ice. Last year the Lions Club helped out with the Barry Dersch fire, Dixen Family in Trust, Old Timers Association, Rimbey and District Volunteer Supper, Camp He Ho Ha, Royal Canadian Legion History Book and the Blindman Youth Action Society. Ongoing projects include the cattle round up, Heart and Stroke Fund, Lions Eye Research, Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides, Lions of Alberta Foundation, Outreach School Scholarship and lunch program, Rimbey Food Bank, Rimbey Victim Services, Royal Canadian Legion, Stars Ambulance, Central Alberta Raceways, Canadian Institute for the Blind, Lions Question, West Blind Curlers, Western Blind Golfers and Cavalcade for Diabetes. The club has plans to help with the overlay for the walking trails which are now under construction due to earthwork on the property for the new senior’s lodge. Lions clubs are recognized for their service to the blind and visually impaired. This service began when Helen Keller challenged Lions to become knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness. Since 1917 Lions clubs have offered people the opportunity to give something back to their communities. The clubs have now expanded their focus in keeping with the ever-changing global needs.

wonderful new facility during a time of recession when it is a sad, but true realism that job layoffs and cutbacks are happening all around us. It is also true that the food bank is getting busier and caseloads for mental health agencies are filling up. Government spending has been reduced. The town, itself, is struggling to do its best to go ahead with infrastructure repairs, hold the line on taxes and keep some dollars aside for future emergencies. In the midst of all this doom and gloom, residents would do well to remind themselves

that a new lodge in Rimbey is an exciting and much needed addition to our town. The people that worked together and are still working together to make this lodge become a reality certainly deserve kudos. It takes a vision for the future, the determination and commitment to forge ahead and finally, against all odds, turn such a dream into a reality. All levels of government including Ponoka County, Rimoka and the Town of Rimbey have demonstrated that there is strength in numbers and when representa-

tives from these entities work together, it is amazing what can result. The official sod breaking for the new lodge is happening on June 6 and it certainly will be a ceremony worth attending. Having reason to celebrate is always a good thing. The sod breaking and ribbon cutting and speeches are to be held at 11 a.m. on the site and will be followed by a reception at Rimbey Drop In Centre. Government representatives and Rimoka’s past and present board members have all been invited to attend.

actually going to happen in Rimbey. It is good to see that work is underway. While there seems to remain a certain amount of dissention and grumbling about some of the issues surrounding the lodge, the bottom line remains the same. Thanks to a great deal of legwork and perseverance combined with a leap of faith the lodge is going ahead as planned. Everyone involved deserves a pat on the back for a job well done. It is especially noteworthy that Rimbey is getting such a

I always laugh when I hear about elected officials, particularly provincial and federal, when they plan a “retreat.” As if they’re under so much pressure, they have to find refuge somewhere. And it’s usually a million dollar resort that offers the refuge. So Apr. 23 weekend I laughed out loud when reading about NDP Premier Rachel Notley and Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau meeting in

Kananaskis Country “to talk pipelines.” We all know this is a public relations campaign for Notley, as the constant “This is all the previous government’s fault” proclamations are falling on deaf ears now. Trudeau’s made it clear with his shoulder-shrugging approach to the recession that he couldn’t care less about Alberta, the energy industry or the people in it. Trudeau had his entire cabinet at the posh “Delta Lodge” where rooms routinely cost $300 per person per night (You know that any hotel that has a row of international flags lining the pavement… it’s going to be expensive). With all the expense scandals that have toppled governments and political careers, you’d think these leaders would be a little more careful with our tax dollars. I’ve always wondered why, if these “retreats” are supposed to be some

kind of working vacation, they’re always hosted at some playground where the last thing that will be accomplished is any work. With 24 years of experience in journalism, I’ve seen a lot of this “retreat” stuff go on. Let’s not forget the “networking” and “training” weekends. Earlier in my career I was covering a county council meeting in another part of Alberta and the councilors began discussing how much they were going to be paid to go to a curling bonspiel. They seemed to think $300 or $400 per day was fair. It seemed ridiculous that elected officials expected to be paid hundreds of dollars to drink beer and sweep rocks. So, after the meeting, I told the reeve, “That discussion is going to look really bad in the newspaper.” A couple days later the municipal manager called and said the councilors waived their pay for the bonspiel and would

I please leave that conversation out of the paper? Then there was the school division superintendent who went for training in Atlantic City, New Jersey. This came up at a school board meeting I covered many years ago in a different community. The assistant superintendent was handling the meeting, and said the superintendent of schools was in Atlantic City (the Las Vegas of New Jersey) for a training seminar. This is a city that’s full of poker tables, slot machines and showgirls. Hmmm, lots of serious work is going to get done, I’m sure. Is this the appropriate place to go for training on the taxpayer’s dime? Later it was revealed the trip cost somewhere in the neighbourhood of $10,000 to $12,000. When I worked in Rocky Mountain House a few years ago I met a former chief of the Sunchild First Nation who had been liv-

ing a traditional lifestyle; traditional meaning he was living as his ancestors had with minimal modern conveniences and in a teepee. He said it really taught him a lot about humility and simplification. In my opinion, that’s where Very Important People like Rachel Notley and Justin Trudeau should be retreating to. Rather than spending hundreds of thousands of tax dollars for conceited narcissists to ride the hotel waterslide or sleep in memory foam beds, they might accomplish something for the people of Alberta by focusing on creating jobs and ending the recession. But maybe for Notley and Trudeau it’s more important to focus on the quality of the prime rib at the Delta buffet. Stu Salkeld is the new editor of the Leduc/ Wetaskiwin Pipestone Flyer and writes a regular column for the paper.

RIMBEY REVIEW 5 The roof on the community centre will be replaced this summer as it is leaking and is seriously damaged due to weather and aging. File photo

Rimbey FCSS Healthy Families

Ponoka County tightens belt on donations BY TREENA MIELKE Ponoka County has not removed a yellow light regarding funding for a new roof for The Peter Lougheed Centre Community roof. The county, who has been on the fence regarding the funding for the community centre, is still undecided. However, at the last county council meeting, councillors agreed funding requests for such big-ticket items may need to be frozen for the time being. At the county meeting April 21, final approval was not given to the $33.5 million budget. A decision regarding requests such as roof work on the community centre, renovations to Liberty Hall and an expansion for the Rimbey museum have been put on hold for further discussion. The possibility of a funding request being granted for money to assist with planning for renovations to the Ponoka recreation facility is also yet to be decided. At the meeting, councillors agreed the county needed to be cognizant

of using dollars frugally and spending only for the benefit of taxpayers. Rimbey mayor Rick Pankiw said he understands the county’s hesitation to give out the funding. “Everybody is in the same boat,” he said. “At the end of the day, we appreciate and will be forever grateful for Ponoka County and all they do to help us out.” Pankiw said the roof work would go on with or without the financial support of Ponoka County. The town has budgeted $385,000 for the community centre roof. Cooper Roofing has been hired to replace the roof and work could begin on the project by early summer. Community director Cindy Bowie said once two HVAC units are installed on the roof, work can begin. “I’m hoping by the end of May,” she said. The new roof will take approximately two months to complete depending on the weather. The company’s bid of $264,595 plus GST in-

cludes replacing all the roof drains and gum boxes as required, sealing all roof obstacles and perimeter properly and the use of 250 gravel cap sheet was accepted by council. Cooper Roofing offers a 12-year manufacturer’s warranty and a 15-year workmanship warranty. The warranty is important to council and myself,” said Bowie. Extra costs would include wet insulation replacement for $1.95 a square foot up to oneinch thickness, mechanical/electrical disconnections and lift three large HVAC units. Coun. Mathew Jaycox said it was important to ensure a walkway would be included in the roofing design. “We do have a lot of roof traffic,” said Bowie, adding she will talk to Cooper Roofing about the additional expense. The community centre roof has had minimal repairs over the past 30 years and the life expectancy of the tar and gravel roof material is near completion, said Bowie.

Bentley ball diamond being renewed BY JUNE NORVILA

Guess who is having a BIG birthday on May 13th?

Bentley will soon have another ball diamond to use. Last fall a request from Bentley Minor Ball was brought forward to town council. Since minor ball has seen a resurgence in the last two to three years and there were not enough diamonds available to use and not enough to stage a tournament. With interest in slow-pitch also growing last year, council decided to rebuild the older ball diamond between the curling rink parking lot and the campground area.

The cost of rebuilding it is approximately $40,000 town CAO Elizabeth Smart said, with half the funding coming from the town and the remainder from Lacombe County. Player’s benches and spectator bleachers are ready to install. The player’s bench area will not be covered at this time. A few years ago, the older ball diamond was not being used enough. The younger school students used to use the smaller older diamond at times.

Ponoka County utilizes herbicides for weed and brush control along County owned Right-Of–Ways. This is done as part of an integrated vegetation management plan consisting of mowing, hand picking, hand brushing, and brush mulching. Vegetation control provides for safe roadways through improving sightlines and visibility for motorists and to allow motorists to detect wildlife in the roadside ditches. Also, by controlling unwanted Prohibited Noxious and Noxious weeds, the County decreases the risk of invasive plant encroachment into area farm production and to the environment. All roads within the County are subject to spot or blanket spraying from May to October (weather depending). The diamond was in a state of disrepair so was basically scrapped and at that time it was deemed to be too expensive to repair it for the amount of use it would get. The area was used as an experimental dog park for a year but that didn’t get used either and would have been too expensive to fence according to all the necessary regulations. The mesh wire fence along the eastern perimeter of the old diamond was torn out and replaced with post and cable fencing to keep vehicles out of the green space. Now, that has all been taken out and replaced with brand new taller wire mesh fencing and the area has been expanded slightly to be able to be used for softball and slow-pitch again. The two bigger ball diamonds that had been built in 1995 south and west of the Blindman Valley agriculture building were and are still being used. Minor ball has about seven teams this year. Contacts are Alexis Screpneck or Karen Jaffray. Slow-pitch has about ten teams this year. Contacts are Dodi Farnham or Keely Butcher. Any of the three ball diamond facilities can now be booked through the town office at (403)748-4044.

BY TREENA MIELKE Sometimes a new perspective is all one needs to deal with difficult and painful situations that life may throw in one’s path. And sometimes just talking about the situation is enough to relieve the stress of tackling a difficult challenge alone. That’s where Delicia Adams comes in. Adams is a clinical counsellor with a Masters Degree in marital and family therapy. She comes to Rimbey every Tuesday to provide counselling services through Catholic Social Services. She especially enjoys working with teens, but is happy to work with people of all ages and from all walks of life. Adams realizes it’s often not easy for people to reach out for help when they are in a crisis situation. “It takes a huge leap of faith to come in,” she said, “and there is often fear they will be judged.” Lending a listening ear and allow-

ing people to share their concerns and fears and simply validating their feelings is important, she said. “I want to help them feel empowered and help them tackle the different challenges they’re undertaking. Sometimes helping them get a new perspective on a situation will help relieve the stress. I try to treat each individual with sensitivity and make them feel safe and comfortable.” While municipal funding has been cut for the service provided by Rimbey Community Wellness Association, Leanne Evans, program coordinator for Rimbey Neighborhood Place and the Community Wellness Group said the wellness group is hopeful to replace that funding through other sources. Evans said the family councillor has been coming to Rimbey weekly since the program was initiated and she has a steady stream of clients. “A disruption in the services offered would be a huge detriment to these clients,” she said. “It takes a very large leap of faith to reach out and admit that you need help. I hope

we are able to continue to support these courageous people in their quest for peace.” Some people utilizing the program are referred by Alberta Mental Health and Rimbey Victim Service Unit is supportive of this initiative as well. Referrals also come from the social worker at the Rimbey Junior Senior High School and West Country Outreach School. Catholic Social Services has provided the services to Rimbey and area for a cost of approximately $15,000 annually. “Great progress has been made to break down stigmatism and fear so that anyone that may find himself or herself in need of this service will access it,” she said. Rimbey Victim Services and FCSS contribute $5,000 each towards the program. Appointments can be made now with the family counsellor by calling Red Deer Catholic Social Service office at 403-347-8844 and specifying that the appointments be made in Rimbey.

The devastating fires that have forced the evacuation of thousands of people in Fort McMurray sparked the memory of the Slave Lake fire five years prior for a Rimbey area couple and once again, they want to do their part to make a difference. Beth Johnston and her husband Kelly had family in Slave Lake who lost their home and all their possessions in the fire and the Rimbey couple had organized a donation drive to help out the community at that time. Johnson said victims of such a fire go through terrible trauma, which lasts for years. “This fire has brought back so many memories for our family as we had family members who lost it all in the Slave Lake fires. It took them years to get better,” she said. “It was simply devastating. My family and friends together organized a cargo trailer full of clothes and supplies and the boys and I took it north Slave Lake in 2011.” Johnson noted the fire has hit a community that has already been hard by the downturn in the economy. She said a call came in at the insurance agency where she works today from someone who had lost their home and possessions in the fire. “Unfortunately, not everyone even has insurance,” she said. Those who want to help with donations for the Fort McMurray fire victims may drop off clothes, blankets, pet supplies, toiletries and other items at Sugar Bells Bakery in Sylvan Lake and Golden Horizon Wellness Centre in The Sylvan Lake Medical Centre at 5007 – 46 Street, Suite 213. Anyone who wants to donate may also call Kelly at 403596-4074. Meanwhile, news of the devastating effects of the fire at Fort McMurray is far reaching. Red Deer Lacombe MP Blaine Calkins responds to the situation. “My thoughts and prayers go to the residents of Fort McMurray and surrounding areas as they must deal with the realities of home while evacuating to other areas of the province. I continue to pray for the safety of our firefighting crews here in Alberta and I extend my thanks and gratitude to crews who will be joining this fight, not only from other parts of Alberta, but from across our Country. I am deeply encouraged by the efforts of Albertans to lend their support and help in this time of great need. We are strong, we are resilient, and we will help Fort McMurray to rebuild. For those who wish to lend their support at this time, I would encourage you to make a financial contribution to www.donate.redcross.ca. Additionally you can help by texting REDCROSS to 30333 to donate $5 from your cellphone.

RIMBEY REVIEW 13

Celebrating May and walking with Jacob BY TREENA MIELKE We celebrated May 1 by having breakfast on the deck and feeling all happy and warm as brave rays of sunshine danced all over us and brightened up the faded baskets of little blue flowers painted on our dinner plates. I found my husband out there, hiding; smoking and being all defiant the way people get after a long winter. “I’m just going to sit out here,” he said, already dressed in shorts and his ‘Bahamas’ T-shirt. “Okay,” I said agreeably. “I will just bring breakfast out.” And so it came to be bacon and eggs and coffee became a celebratory meal of sorts, and we celebrated May Day and the fact the sun was warm on our faces and the grass was green and the leaves were green also with all visages of winter long gone. Later, I wheeled my youngest grandson about in the stroller I have stored in the garden shed. Pushing that stroller is like trying to push a grocery cart with really bad wheels on a gravel road, but with perseverance and stubbornness, both of which I believe myself to be quite well endowed with, I finally got the wheels to go in the right direction. Down the road, through the playground, out the other side and back across the road to where the roadside ditches were dotted with yellow dandelions, we went. Jacob clutched an orange juice box, sucking the straw with vigor, just happy the way twoyear-olds are happy on a sunny afternoon when their tummies are full, their mom isn’t too far away and their grandma is at their beck and call.

As we strolled along, I showed him a dandelion, that marvelous weed that, aided and abetted by the older generation such as myself, totally passes itself off as a flower to unsuspecting children. “Flower,” I said to the little boy, telling the innocent white lie to the child without even blinking at the telling of such an atrocity. “Flower.” He sniffed appreciatively. We walked on, passing people with little white dogs on leashes and people with children in strollers and people just walking without children or dogs. We smiled at each other, for no other reason than because it was a warm day in May and, once again, Mother Nature had gone crazy with the colour green. We arrived in front of a yard where the grass was a little too long to effectively pull off the well-groomed look and to make matters worse, its surface was abundantly sprinkled with a fresh crop of yellow dandelions. Home. Home at last. I eyed my lawn ruefully. “I should mow that lawn,” I tell myself sternly. “It’s disgusting.” But then the other voice, the voice of experience and the one that is all about things you can’t see, only feel in your heart, cut in. Childhood is so fleeting, gone in less than a heartbeat. Your lawn will be here forever, grass is a perennial, it keeps coming back every year. But, all too soon, little boys grow up and strollers, tucked away in the garden shed, grow rusty with age. And so, spending a sunny afternoon pushing a stroller and sharing the wonder and beauty of

the common dandelion with a small boy is a wise and wonderful thing to do. And time well spent. Very well spent!

West Country Outreach students enjoy trip to United States SUBMITTED

Help shape Alberta’s health care services

At 7:25 on the morning of March 20, twelve members of the West Country Outreach School family flew to Boston to begin the biggest adventure of our lives. While in Boston we spent a very snowy morning on

a walking tour of the city, learning about the history of the American Revolution and Paul Revere. We also drove to Salem to visit the Witch Museum and experience the hysteria that gripped that area in 1692 – very creepy.

The new benchmark in bolt-action riÁe design.

Students enjoy trip continued from page 16 On day three, we drove south to New York City, where we spent two days seeing all of the big tourist attractions – Times Square, Grand Central, Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, 9/11 Memorial, Chinatown. A big highlight was seeing “Jersey Boys” on Broadway. Day five saw us driving further south to Philadelphia where we took photos of the Liberty Bell and raced each other to the top of the famous Rocky Steps. Arriving in Washington, DC late that evening we had a quick dinner then walked to the White House for pictures. On the morning of day six, we started at the Vietnam and Lincoln Memorials, before spending time hearing the story of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln at Ford’s Theatre. For the afternoon we visited Mt Vernon – the famous home of George Washington. In Alexandria, Virginia that evening, a ghost tour was on the agenda, and the cool temperature and wind made it that much creepier. On day seven we toured the US Capitol building, Arlington National Cemetery, and The Museum of Natural History. One of the real highlights of the trip was this evening when we dressed in our finest and walked through the cherry blossoms at the Tidal Basin while handing out Canada and Alberta flags and pins to people we met. The nine students on the trip embraced their roles as ambassadors for our country, and as the adults followed along behind them it was heartwarming and emotional to see all the people waving the maple leaf and putting on their new pins. The kids did an excellent job. Our last day in Washington started at the International Spy Museum, was interrupted by the President driving by in a motorcade, and ended at the Holocaust Museum, an emotional conclusion to an exciting eight days. Our students represented Canada in the best way possible, making new friends and spreading Canadian goodwill everywhere we went. Their willingness to talk with people about our great country and home town while soaking up all of the educational opportunities given to them made the adults on the trip proud. It was common to hear Americans share that our kids are amazing. We couldn’t agree more.

RONDEEL STEEVES John ‘Jack’ Frederick Steeves of Rimbey, Alberta passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Sunday, May 1, 2016 at the age of 85 years. Jack was born in Travers, Alberta on January 16, 1931 to Fred and Amy Steeves. After enduring nine years of drought in southern Alberta, his father was offered a job on a farm as a hired man, and in 1938 their family moved north to Bluffton. They bought the Hoggarth farm and later the old Haverigg post office building which became the home in which Jack and his sisters grew up. Jack farmed with his dad, Fred and also worked as a taxi cab driver in Red Deer where he met Ila Strand. They were united in marriage in 1956 and began their married life at a farm north of Rimbey, eventually settling in the Hoadley area where together they raised their family of four sons and one daughter. Jack worked hard on the farm and also took on many other jobs to support his family. Over the years he worked on the railroad, sawmills, and drove mail, milk, cement, and water trucks. He also worked in the oil patch and eventually retired from the Rimbey Gas Plant in 1990. Throughout those years, Jack was involved in the Hoadley Church helping as youth group leader and Sunday School teacher, as well as holding other positions on the church board. His faith in God and in Jesus Christ as his Saviour was central to how he lived. Jack enjoyed every opportunity to spend time with his extended family, and he appreciated the beauty of nature and spending time outdoors. He loved camping trips and Sunday drives, picnics and quading, horse trail rides and driving his team, exploring old roads and learning old stories. He was always happy to have visitors and enjoyed playing table games and chatting with family and friends. Jack was also known for playing harmless practical jokes and tricks to startle people or get a laugh. He was always a gentleman and an excellent host, welcoming people into his home and into his life. He was a role model and teacher, always seeing a lesson in life situations. “Jack told us and showed us, the best way to live … is to follow God’s lead.” Jack will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his three sons: Merv (Karen) Steeves of Hoadley; Gene (Lynn) Steeves of Lacombe; and Laverne (Deb) Steeves also of Hoadley; his daughter, Sheila (Reg) McIlwain of Lacombe; and his daughter-in-law, Sue (Dave) Stankevich of Bluffton; as well as numerous cherished grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will also be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his sisters: June Wilson of Indiana; Janette (Edward) Oke of Olds; Margie (Wilf) Wiens of Didsbury; Joyce (Elmer) Deal of Rimbey; and Sharon (Richard) Fehr also of Rimbey. Many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and close friends who have been like family, will also miss Jack and the many wonderful times spent in his company. Jack was predeceased by his beloved wife of 59 years, Ila in September, 2015; his son, Darrell Steeves in 2008; his parents, Fred and Amy Steeves; two sisters, Jean Budd and Betty Cox; and a baby brother. A Public Funeral Service in Celebration of Jack’s Life was held at the Hoadley Evangelical Missionary Church, Hoadley on Friday, May 6, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Barry Klassen and Reverend Terry Oke officiating. Interment followed in the Hoadley Cemetery, Hoadley. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Jack’s Memory may be made directly to the Hoadley Evangelical Missionary Church ~ Building and Expansion Fund, Box 1, Site 7, R.R. 2, Bluffton, Alberta T0C 0M0; or to the charity of one’s choice. With Canada as their new permanent home, Riek and Frank were united in marriage in a double ceremony on November 21, 1953 in Twin Butte, Alberta. RIMBEY REVIEW 23

Rimbey Spartan junior girls rugby player Brooke Hatala runs with the ball followed by teammates Jenaya Roseboom and Katie Mackinaw during a home game Tuesday night against Drayton Valley. The girls lost one match and tied one match against their opposition. Treena Mielke Photos

Rimbey Spartans Senior Girls Rugby team on winning streak BY TREENA MIELKE

The Rimbey senior girls rugby team is off to an excellent start in league play with two wins under its belt. The Spartans defeated Hunting Hills 61 – 15 in Red Deer last Wednesday and the week prior they won against Notre Dame Cougars 43 – 5. Coach Ceara Newman is pleased with the effort and skill her team is demonstrating on the field. “I am really proud of how we’re doing,” she said. The Spartans also competed in a tournament in Sherwood Park on the weekend, finishing with two wins and two loses. However, Newman said the losses were justified, as Rimbey was playing against bigger schools in a different tier. The Spartans will face Lindsay Thurber High School rugby team on May 11 at 5 p.m. Coach Newman expects the game to be a challenging one. “Lindsay Thurber is the team to beat,” she said. The girls rugby program has been ongoing since 2003. Ciaran Orman, who then coached the team, is now working with his daughter Ceara as assistant coach and her mom, Denise is also helping out as a trainer. Former player Kelcie Garnick is also an assistant coach as is student Garreth Jones. Newman said the team has a good mix of rookies and veteran players. “We have only won the league once,” she said, “but I think we have a shot at it this year.” Newman said the junior high rugby program is very helpful in preparing the girls for the more competitive senior league. She attributes the junior high program as playing a major role in the success of the senior program.

Rimbey junior girls Spartan rugby players Marni Giebelhaus and Belle Babcock stand ready to grab the ball in a game Tuesday against Drayton Valley.
