Each employer is evaluated in terms of: • the unique environmental initiatives and programs it has developed, • the extent to which it has been successful in reducing the organization’s own environmental footprint, • the degree to which employees are involved in these programs and whether they contribute any unique skills and • the extent to which these initiatives have become linked to the employer’s public identity and whether they attract new people to the organization.
“The Surrey School District has long walked-the-talk as a green employer, from establishing a director of Energy Management & Sustainability position six years ago, to building energy efficient buildings, implementing a green procurement strategy, establishing in-house waste reduction and recycling and much more,” adds Wilson. “Importantly, our district has been setting a great example for the students we teach, who themselves regularly demonstrate leadership in their environmental and sustainability initiatives.”

Greenest Employers competition organizers and judges at the Canada’s Top 100 Employers project in Toronto. It is the first time Surrey Schools has submitted an application to be considered for the award and the honour comes two months after the district was named one of BC’s Top Employers. “This recognition is rewarding in so many ways,” says Surrey Board of Education chairperson Shawn Wilson. “The award recognizes many years of ongoing efforts on many fronts by our board to ensure sustainability and environmental sensitivity is a priority in our district.

Record numbers at district dance festival The 2016 Surrey District Dance Festival was the largest ever, attracting close to 7,000 students from all grades in 190 performing groups. Many dance forms were on display, from Hip Hop to tap dancing and Bhangra to Zumba, with most involving colourful, coordinated outfits. The event took place at the district’s Bell Performing Arts Centre over six days in April and was well attended by families and fans.

Aladdin Junior production pure genie-us Stunning costumes and sets, professional-quality special effects, great choreography and dozens of committed and well-rehearsed performers and crew make it quickly obvious the Betty Huff Theatre Company (BHTC) provides a performance far beyond a typical school play. The Aladdin Junior production was a fun and funny musical featuring all the main characters we’ve come to know from the original cartoon movie, as well as some great cameos of towering giraffes and even a princely Darth Vader vying for princess Jasmine’s hand in marriage. Aladdin, as with all the BHTC productions since 2002, is a result of incredible effort, not just by the actors and stage crew, but an entire cast of school, parent and community volunteers, all led by teacher and director
Steve Swaddling, who’s been producing musicals at the school for 26 years. The business community is also involved, donating everything from financial support (Telus Community Connections, United Postal Service, Swinburne Service Station Ltd.) to scaffolding (Canada Scaffold), special effects equipment (HollyNorth Production Supplies Ltd.), lighting (Christie Lites), a scissor lift (Reliable Equipment Rentals Ltd.) and chairs (Queen Elizabeth Secondary). The production involved more than 36,000 LED lights, a 32-channel digital sound board, 18 gallons of paint for staging and more than 100 hours of rehearsals since September. Gifted teens mentor at-risk students in after-school program About 30 vulnerable and at-risk Grade 4 to 7 students from W.E. Kinvig elementary are getting hands-on technology learning opportunities provided by gifted Surrey Academy of Innovative Learning (SAIL) Grade 8 and 9 students. The student mentors are part of an innovative afterschool program – dubbed Tech YI (Youth Innovation) – launched by the Surrey School District’s CommunitySchools Partnership department with funding support from RBC. Tech YI’s main goal is to promote STEM-
based ideas and projects, and how they can be applied to academics, home and community. Over eight sessions, the teens, who are in SAIL’s science, technology, engineering and mathematics accelerated (STEM-X) program, plan, organize and lead the younger students in a variety of tech-related activities, including coding sessions that lead to creating simple games. The concept originated with SAIL STEM-X teachers Dennis Matechuk and Harjijt Deo who were looking for ideas for their students to give back to the community. “The initiative is an excellent opportunity to give our STEM-X student mentors exposure to community work outside of school, foster leadership skills, encourage engagement with other students and “pay it forward”; share theknowledge and skills they’ve acquired at SAIL,”says Mr. Deo. EMS environmental club wins energy prize Earl Marriot Secondary school has been awarded a $1,000 BC Hydro Energy Prize for its on-going dedication to energy conservation and creative storytelling. The contest is one of many offered through Science World’s BC Green Games that offers prizes for new or on-going action projects committed to environmental stewardship. The school’s Green Giants Environmental Club, led by sponsor teacher Ms. Manning won for its energy conservation, waste reduction and

The club’s project consists of several ongoing initiatives: “Light Patrol”, where students turn off lights in empty classrooms after school; “Reusable Mug Mornings”, where free hot chocolate is given to students who bring their own mugs to school; a school compost system; and a shore line and park cleanup. The Green Giants will also be applying for grants to install energy panels in the school.

KPU Lifespan Cognition Study PARTICIPANTS WANTED
The Lifespan Cognition lab at Kwantien Polytechnic University seeks research participants aged 3 to 17 years old and 30 years old and up, including older adults for a 90-minute research study. The research examines humans’ ability to understand and learn from one another. Tasks include computer, pen/paper, and hands-on activities with snacks and breaks provided as needed. We keep all personal data confidential.

Sarah McLachlan School of Music: No-cost music school
Kwantlen University’s Advantage Tutoring & Mastering program provides 17 students at Frank Hurt Secondary once-a-week pre-calculus 11/12 tutoring at no cost. The KPU program is a university-based tutoring service for high school students needing assistance with their learning skills and course content. The tutors have a master’s degree in a related field and many have PhD’s. The tutors also help students prepare for post-secondary learning.
The first free music program provided outside of Vancouver by the Sarah McLachlan School of Music has been opened at Forsyth Road Elementary School, an inner-city school. Eighteen students will receive music fundamentals and a wide range of music opportunities once-a-week after school through to the end of the school year. The school’s goal is to enrich and inspire the lives of disadvantaged young people through the power of music.
