Fire & Ice brings in master carvers to create ice sculptures throughout the streets of the downtown core, while local businesses compete to serve the best chili and other warm and cool food items to visitors. Parksville Uncorked is an annual wine and culinary festival that involves wine and beer tasting events, wine dinners, bubbly brunches, wine-inspired spa treatments and local tours. Stop at Cameron Lake on the way to the famous Cathedral Grove. This lake is so relaxing and beautiful. It is the most perfect place to bring a picnic lunch, a cup of coffee or just each others’ company.

MUSEUMS & HISTORY Discover more local history with The Qualicum Beach Museum is a historic building featuring an extensive and world-renowned palaeontology exhibit, along with captivating First Nations’ and social history exhibits. The latter includes ten-minute video interviews with early pioneers, and features photos from their lives in the area many decades ago. The Parksville Museum and Archives has a collection of early artifacts and the property houses a number of heritage buildings used by the first settlers in the area. There’s the French Creek Post Office open from 1888 to Milner Gardens 1912, the McMillan Log House VIU’S built in 1885 in Errington and MILNER GARDENS the Montrose School depicting & WOODLAND school life in the early 1900s A garden-lovers paradise, this including some original desks. 70-acre seaside garden is filled with trails and gardens featuring the colourful bounty of the seasons. The property is perched on the edge of a bluff that looks out to the expansive Strait of Georgia. An impressive collection of rhododendrons can be found along the trails along with beautiful cyclamen, trilliums and much more. Englishman River and Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Parks are a highlight for many visitors to this part of the region where they find easy wilderness hiking and spectacular waterfalls. Surely visitors to the area have heard of the Goats on the Roof. Coombs Country Market is where you’ll find them. Famous for its Old Country Market, the shops in this area can best be described as eclectic. Other flying creatures can be found at Butterfly World and Gardens, with its dazzling array of insects, reptiles and flowers. Take a dip in Cameron Lake and see if you can spot the Loch Ness monster-like creature that has been sighted for centuries. Stop at MacMillan Provincial Park for a view of 800-year-old trees towering 80-meters high, and you’ll get a taste of what Vancouver Island forests used to be like. You’ll also understand where the park got its familiar name, Cathedral Grove.

Nanoose Bay

Nanoose Bay has some incredible day hikes, among towering old growth fir and twisted red arbutus trees. Nanoose Bay is located at the South end of the Parksville Qualicum Beach region.

1. DEEP BAY Learn all about shellfish at the Marine Field Station. 2. NANOOSE BAY Best known for Fairwinds Golf Club and community.

The highlights of the Highway 19 route through Nanoose Bay include the Arbutus Meadows Event and Equestrian Centre and the world’s tallest gnome (7.91m), now recognized by The Guinness Book of World Records. If you want to experience all Nanoose Bay has to offer, take the scenic route on Northwest Bay Road through the heart of the community. Stop in the quaint Red Gap commercial hub for a coffee break or some grocery shopping. At Powder Point Road you can take a short hike up The Notch to admire Garry Oak and Arbutus meadows, and spectacular views of the Strait of Georgia and across to the mainland.

Nanoose Bay is also home to the Fairwinds Golf Club, marinas, recreation facilities, and hidden beaches. Moorecroft Regional Park, our newest regional park, has amazing trails through remote forest and along rocky shores. Lighthouse Country

North of Qualicum Beach you’ll discover the charming and rustic, Lighthouse Country. Named for the lighthouses on Sisters Island and Chrome Island, the region includes the communities of Dashwood, Qualicum Bay, Dunsmuir, Bowser and Deep Bay. This peaceful stretch of coast is home to Island Scallops, which produces rock scallops, native to the eastern Pacific Ocean. There are no flashy tourist sites in this neck of the woods, instead you’ll find stunning wood carvings

Bluegrass Festival in early summer. If unbridled adventure is what you’re looking for, then head to Horne Lake Caves Provincial Park and take a guided tour. Or if a day at the beach is more your style, visit Horne or Spider Lake. Spider Lake, with its patches of sand and warm waters, is a favourite of locals. It’s also a popular spot for canoeing and kayaking. Stop by the PineRidge Farm Market on your way to or from the lake, for some ice cream, coffee and fresh produce. Spider Lake is known for its superb fishing year-round, and is stocked with small mouth bass and Rainbow trout. Powerboats are prohibited, but small boats, canoes and kayaks are a common sight. Further north, the colourful and calm Deep Bay Marina is a pleasant stop. Enjoy some fish and chips while you watch the activity at the dock, or continue on down a road of crushed seashells to the state-of-theart Deep Bay Marine Shellfish Station. Vancouver Island University conducts research at the facility, which offers amazing views of Baynes Sound along with tours, musical events and hands-on activities.

This 18-hole, par 61 course can be played in about 3 and a half hours, but you may take a bit longer if you get mezmerized by the view and passing wildlife. The course is equipped with a putting green, chipping green, practice sand

bunker and a regulation length driving range. Micky J’s Restaurant and Lounge overlooks the 18th green, has a covered and heated outdoor patio and a variety of menu choices. Brigadoon Golf Course is located minutes from downtown Parksville, where the fairways have been carved out of second growth forest, preserving

wildlife corridors and minimizing environmental impact. This 9-hole course is made up of par 3’s and 4’s and has large, expansive greens. But don’t expect a walk in the park (although it is very park-like), there are challenges throughout this course. Morningstar Golf Club is located in Parksville and has hosted numerous CPGA events. There is an indoor lesson facility open November though March and the golf course’s Grill on the Green is a West Coast-style log and timber building with plenty to drink and a good sized menu. Qualicum Beach Memorial Golf Club is a 9-hole course located between the sea and the town of Qualicum Beach with awe-inspiring views of the Georgia Strait and Mount Arrowsmith. The course is steeped in history, having opened in 1913, and is the fourth oldest in BC.
