Volunteer celebration evening held BY TREENA MIELKE

Rimbey volunteers were honoured at a recognition evening held last Monday at the Peter Lougheed Centre. The town’s strong volunteer base was evident as the main auditorium in the community centre was packed with community minded individuals who came out to enjoy an evening of delicious food, entertainment and visiting. MLA Jason Nixon was one of the guest speakers for the event. He noted that the Mustard Seed, an organization for which he had served as executive director, could not have accomplished what it did without a strong volunteer base. “We had about 11,000 volunteers,” he said. The MLA noted that his colleagues have commented that he is lucky to serve in such a beautiful riding. “It is a beautiful place, a great place,”
he said, “but it is the people that make it what it is. Thank you for all you do.” Ponoka County Reeve Paul McLauchlin told a humorous story about his time as a park ranger, ending on a more serious note as he recognized the volunteers in the crowd, thanking them for their many hours of volunteer work. “We are fortunate to have you. Volunteers play an important part in our community.” Mayor Rick Pankiw also spoke at the dinner. “We are very blessed in Rimbey to have the number of people, young and old, who volunteer. It truly is what makes Rimbey a special place. The countless hours that volunteers put in are truly amazing.” Volunteer Appreciation Week was April 10 to 16. Rimbey Volunteer Committee organized the volunteer community celebration.
Council meets with pilots regarding airport rental agreement BY TREENA MIELKE Negotiations are pending between pilots who use the Rimbey airport and town council. At its Monday meeting, council met with Paul Kusch and Wayne Dancer to discuss a proposed rent increase for use of the hangars from $250 to $1,300 a year. At a previous meeting, Mayor Rick Pankiw had questioned the pilots trenching into the town’s power supply without notifying the appropriate people. However, Dancer said the former assistant CAO and CAO had both been notified of the transaction and had given the okay. A letter written by another pilot who uses the airport, but who was not in attendance clarified the power was included in the lease agreement. The pilots in attendance at the meeting pointed out that the runway cannot be used in the winter and there are no lights. “We can only use it for four months and then we’re shut down,” said Kusch. He also questioned the sale of the lights. “Why were we not contacted?” he questioned. However, Pankiw said council was told the lights were not salvageable. He added the lights were given to Lacombe Flying Club who said they could use them for parts. In exchange the club donated funding to the skateboard park. Pankiw also said he had a conversation with another pilot 27 months ago during which time he encouraged him to come forward with a vision and a plan for the airport. “We believe it (the airport) could draw traffic to the town,” he said. However, he said he never heard back from the individual. “We can’t turn the clock back and we need to move forward,” he said. The possibility of the town selling the airport was discussed as well as other options for a rental agreement. A proposal to have the pilots themselves cut the grass to cut down on the cost of maintenance was shot down. “We don’t have time to cut the grass and fly, too,” said Dancer.

Columnist drives through Rimbey, gives town top rating BY WILL VERBOVEN SPECIAL TO RIMBEY REVIEW A recent trip to Edson and Rimbey provided a stark contrast of how development, or lack thereof, has affected the downtowns of both municipalities. In the case of Edson, west of Edmonton, the main street area has a somewhat worn-out look with a number of empty store fronts and a generally disheveled atmosphere. There may be stores that are successful but there is not a lot to attract residents and visitors to the rather forlorn shopping area. As a result, there is little vehicle or pedestrian traffic, which compounds the problem. Contrast that to the main street of Rimbey, northwest of Red Deer, where one finds a vibrant and busy downtown with few empty store fronts. The variety of downtown retail stores is easily triple that of Edson, a town with three times the population of Rimbey. Unique restaurants and services are interspersed with conventional retail outlets. Most street parking stalls are occupied even in the middle of the day and shoppers are clearly in evidence. The general atmosphere of the main street has a busy and attractive appearance. So why the difference? From my perspective it appears the big difference is that Rimbey does not have big box stores like Walmart or Canadian Tire, whereas Edson has both, along with a plethora of fast food chains, hotels and motels. Edson has busy main Highway 16 running through the main street area, which I suspect doesn’t help
the downtown shopping atmosphere. Rimbey on the other hand has a main highway bypass road which removes a lot of heavy truck traffic from the downtown area. I expect that by accident or design, less than enlightened development planning has resulted in the disjointed layout of Edson. Big box stores, fast food joints, industrial sites, office sites, and large empty lots seem to be scattered about without any real plan. The layout of Rimbey just seems to be more people friendly and rational. To Edson town officials there is probably some sense to their development and it’s true that each town has a somewhat different industrial and commercial base. Edson has a massive resource-based economy with energy and forestry being the main drivers. Many of the stores and services are geared towards that sector. That large economic activity with its well-paid jobs invariably attracts large retailers, hotel chains and fast food outlets. The one thing many of those businesses want is large building and parking areas which a downtown main street can’t supply. I also suspect that Edson, like towns in other parts of the province, may also be too eager to accommodate the demands of these types of businesses because they want the economic development. It’s a mixed blessing, however; studies have shown that big box chains can destroy as many jobs as they create. Turning a thriving downtown retail and restaurant area into a ghost town in favour of development on the outskirts seems counterintuitive from
a development perspective. Rimbey has a different economic base; it has a large and stable agricultural base along with energy industry servicing. To be fair, it doesn’t have the bustle that a busy resource industry brings to a town like Edson, but then hordes of service vehicles, semi-trailer trucks, a mainline railway and major highway traffic are not all that appealing. In its favour is that Rimbey doesn’t have the big box stores that so devastate downtowns in so many places. I suggest that this, along with its stable economic base, has allowed the downtown main street to continue to exist and thrive. Some may see that modern development has by-passed Rimbey, but if that development is exemplified by such towns as Edson, I would suggest the citizens of Rimbey are more fortunate. To be fair to towns like Edson, there may situations where development just seems to happen due to business pressure and a desire to keep up with other towns. I guess my view is be careful what you wish for. On a side note, Edson does have a unique store seldom found in any town of its size – it has a metaphysical and spiritual store called Divine Elements. It sells a variety of new age items and books including witchcraft items, singing bowls, incense, gemstones and tiny angels (yes I bought one) along with a plethora of other curiosities and elements to soothe your life’s journey. How this store survives baffles me, but then maybe it reflects something that somehow resonates with the citizens of Edson and day-to-day life in this town.

Council accepts bid to replace community centre roof BY TREENA MIELKE After a lengthy discussion at Monday’s meeting, council agreed to hire Cooper Roofing to replace the roof on the Peter Lougheed Community Centre. Work could begin on the project by early summer. Community director Cindy Bowie said once two HVAC units are installed on the roof, work can begin. “I’m hoping by the end of May,” she said. The new roof will take approximately two months to complete depending on the weather. The company’s bid of $264,595 plus GST includes replacing all the roof drains and gum boxes as required, sealing all roof obstacles and perimeter properly and the use of 250 gravel cap sheet was accepted by council. Cooper Roofing offers a 12-year manufacturer’s warranty and a 15-year workmanship warranty. The warranty is important to council and myself,” said Bowie. Extra costs would include wet insulation replacement for $1.95 a square foot up to one-inch thickness, mechanical/ electrical disconnections and lift three large HVAC units. Coun. Mathew Jaycox said it was important to ensure a walkway would be included in the roofing design. “We do have a lot of roof traffic,” said Bowie, adding she will talk to Cooper Roofing about the additional expense. Council had budgeted $385,000 for the community centre roof. The County of Ponoka has agreed to pay for half the project. The community centre roof has had minimal repairs over the past 30 years and the life expectancy of the tar and gravel roof material is near completion, said Bowie. West Point/Jayson Global Roofing had a bid of $340,852 plus GST and Goodmen Roofing’s bid came in at $368,713 plus GST. Superior Spray Foam’s bid came in at $204,424 plus GST.

Rimbey Christian School offers great education opportunities Dear Editor, The article printed March 8, 2016 in the Rimbey Review regarding Wolf Creek Public School rejecting inclusion request from Rimbey Christian School weighed on my heart as it did not tell the rest of the story. This is our experience with Rimbey Christian. Previously we were in a WCPS before we made the
move to RCS. We moved our children to RCS two years ago and it’s the best move we made. One son has vision problems and has a code for extra help. Before we moved to RCS, we saw growing concerns in his behaviors and emotional state each day that passed.

At the RCS he is thriving and growing and we have watched him blossom into the incredibly intelligent kid he is. One way RCS helps is with the Bible and the ability to teach a child to monitor his actions with a loving and respectful perspective based on truth in God’s Word. My older son who would have been going into a Wolf Creek School with no options that suited him and his learning style, participates in RCS programs like robotics and making ads for radio and he is excelling. The school may need some technology updates, but I assure you, they have made up for it in others ways. We have a great facility. While we agree there are things that need some attention, most of the school is doing very well. Keep in mind that it is an alternative program and we are not funded by the government like public schools are. I implore you to understand there is an upside for the board for including an amazing school like RCS. WCPS would finally be offering alternative programs and gaining many kids that our home schooled because their parents cannot afford alternative programming. I quote Mr. Huff, “It is in competition with our current schools in Rimbey.� However, if our little school were to close tomorrow, I will be looking for another Christian school outside of the WCPS area. I would ask Mr. Huff to remember that in Grade 10 our kids would be coming to the public school and this would, in fact, be increasing your numbers. I am very disappointed that no one considered some positive reasons for WCPS to look into this and while I do understand economics are a huge part, maybe sometimes, we should look outside the box of the almighty dollar. I want to stress this to those who read the less than glowing review in the paper that day about RCS: Rimbey Christian school changed the direction of my children’s education for the better. Never once have my boys noticed the windows are a little outdated or the phone infrastructure is different or that the bell isn’t as fancy as their old school. Reader questions proposed airport rental fees Dear Editor, What is the big fuss about the airport? The Prince family has taken excellent care of the airport area for years. It’s always neat and clean, grass cut, garbage picked up, etc. Rimbey town council, in their wisdom, now wants to charge a monthly fee for rent and yet they expect the caretaking duties plus security to be done by the resident. Everyone can sympathize in a way because Hwy 2A is a very busy road, and the heavy traffic can sometimes be frustrating. But patience is a virtue. Let’s switch gears: what’s with the wacky northbound Hwy 2 merge ramp from Hwy 2A on the south side of Leduc? Heading westbound, the merge ramp that leads onto Hwy 2
has a speed sign that says 50 km/hr, but Hwy 2 traffic is 110 km. Let’s be frank… Highway 2 as it passes through Leduc is a heck of a lot faster than 110 km/hr and the traffic on Hwy 2 is not particularly considerate in that the thru traffic could take the left lane, leaving the right lane open for merging. But that doesn’t happen very often. What happens much more often is horn-honking and middle fingers. continued on page 15

I totally agree with the writer, Gord Redford, about tailgating, rammy drivers on Hwy 2A passing people in sketchy situations to get five feet further ahead. Gravel concerns discussed BY TREENA MIELKE Lack of gravel on the Evergreen Estates Road might not be the primary reason for the road to be extremely slippery after a rain. At its Monday meeting, developer Paul Kusch suggested council put more gravel on the road as it is “extremely greasy” after a rain and would benefit from another layer of gravel. However, Mayor Rick Pankiw said in October 2015 there was approximately 400 tonnes of three-quarter inch crushed gravel spread on the road at a cost of $10,000. He said he observed public works director Rick Schmidt who was on the road with the grader recently. “The gravel was so high it was going over the blade,” he said. However, the mayor noted the gravel surface was extremely hard. Council agreed to talk to its engineering firm to seek a solution.

Good luck to everyone as tax season draws to a close Me and mom and taxes BY CHRISTINE FERNIE, CPA SPECIAL TO THE RIMBEY REVIEW The last two weeks, I wrote about the deadlines, tax filing options and the most overlooked medical deductions. What else should you consider? Start early to allow time to gather and organize paperwork, which is the biggest task when preparing a return. If you are preparing the return, tax software approved by CRA is useful because the interview process helps to identify which forms you need to complete. If are changing tax software or tax preparers, you will need the carry forward schedule from 2014 to identify unused deductions on your last tax return. Save and read last year’s Notice of (re)Assessment to find RRSP limits and to check for carry-forward information which could offer some deductions in this year. Claim all OFFICIAL donations made in 2015; STARS and hospital lottery tickets are not claimable, nor are pledges. Sort these out yourself so you are not paying a professional to sort non-deductible items. Political donations go in a separate area of your return and provide a higher tax credit than charitable donations so be sure to claim these in the correct area. If you have too many donations to claim them all, the excess can be carried forward. Some standard deductions include official RRSP contributions; receipts for tuition fees (you need form T2202 for post-secondary education deductions - signed by student), textbooks, union and professional dues. Carrying charges can be claimed for investment counsel fees so if you pay someone to manage your investments, you may qualify to deduct the fees annually. Interest is deductible if you have a letter/statement from lending institution indicating the amount of deductible interest paid and the purpose of loans used for student loans or investment purposes (not RRSPs). Record details of alimony and/or child support payments, if deductible. Child care expenses are deductible but you will need to have a schedule with the Social Insurance Number (SIN) of individuals who received payment for services. You can claim a maximum of $1,000 of eligible fees for each child under the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit program so if you have children, be
sure to investigate this deduction. If you have moving expenses related to medical, business, professional, employment or education transfers, check to see if you qualify to claim them, or a portion thereof. You may be eligible to claim employment expenses including automobile or home office expenses. You would require form T2200 signed by your employer (applicable to commissioned sales clerk or employees required to carry out duties of employment away from the employers place of business or for expenses where such are required by virtue of your employment contract). Public transit commuters can claim a tax credit for monthly or annual passes for unlimited travel within
Canada on any of the following: buses, streetcars, subways, commuter trains, or ferries. You may also be able to claim the cost of shorter duration passes and electronic payment cards in certain circumstances. If you are a volunteer firefighter or search and rescue volunteer for at least 200 hours annually, you may qualify for tax credits. This is not a full list of deductions, but some of the most common. If you have unusual circumstances, search the Canada Revenue Agency website http:// www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tx/ndvdls/tpcs/ncm-tx/rtrn/cmpltng/ ddctns/menu-eng.html for details of eligible deductions and what conditions must be met to claim them. Give the family who lost their child a chance to grieve, do not punish them David and Collet Stephan seem to be in a lot of trouble. Their son Ezekiel died of meningitis in March 2012. The married couple is being prosecuted with failing to provide the necessities of life. The recently published articles in the wake of the Stephan’s trial are highly suggestive that Ezekiel’s parents liked to take the organic health path. I’m not a doctor, but I did a bit of research. I found that meningitis can be prevented with vaccinations and can be treated with antibiotics. Jonah I don’t know if Ezekiel received a vaccination shot that may have prevented him from contracting a viral infection, but I find it kind of funny that Western medicine wasn’t pursued immediately by the Stephans. The physician’s report contained information suggesting Ezekiel’s parent’s contradictory behaviours—his mother looked to the Internet for natural or organic treatment options (the report can be ironically found on the internet). Ezekiel may not have been vaccinated, given antibiotics, or taken to the hospital in a reasonable amount of time (all of which are modern Western medical practices), but his parents are using modern Western technology as a means to find alternative health treatments. You can see the contradiction. But what if Ezekiel’s parents weren’t white. What if they had a different skin colour and lived in a different culture in a different country. Likely, if a story like Ezekiel’s popped up, we would simply say that the parents of the deceased child had different values and different cultural healing practices than ours. Is it okay that kids in a different culture die because his
or her culture values different paths towards health and well being? What if these cultures existed in Canada and do not endorse running straight to the hospital when health is comprised? It’s tough to answer those questions as a white, middle class male living in Alberta. I don’t want to see any kids die. It is difficult enough to navigate cultural differences in a globalized world. But it seems to me that Ezekiel’s white parents, with different health and Kondro healing values, are unnecessarily getting prosecuted with failing to provide the necessities of life. Bob Marley died of an untreated toe infection. He wrote a lot of good tunes and probably could have written a lot more if he treated his infection. If you listened to one of his albums, you would know he had a lot of different views and values about the world. I think Ezekiel should have been immediately taken to the hospital and Marley should have got his toe looked at before it killed him. Pardon the pun, but it is a tough pill to swallow to acknowledge the differences in other’s values. I guess I don’t understand the value in natural or organic medicines. David and Collet Stephan should not go to prison because their values dictated a different path for their son’s healing. They stuck by their guns until the bitter end of Ezekiel’s short life. And the Stephan’s bravery in their choices (like Bob Marley’s), despite disastrous results, show their commitment to what they believe in. Losing Ezekiel was punishment enough for the Stephans—leave them alone.

BY TREENA MIELKE Rimbey high school drama class is gearing up to present the twoact play, And A Child Shall Lead, a poignant, gripping story about the horrors of the holocaust and the children who suffered because of it. Based on the courageous children of Terezin, who were held in a Czechoslovakian ghetto, the play spans the time frame from 1942 to ’45. Grade 11 student, 16-year-old Jorney Giesbrecht plays the role of 12-year-old Gabriella Winterova, a Jewish girl who is sent to the concentration camp. During the three years she is in the camp, she falls in love with Paval Hoffman, played by Grade 11 student, 16-yearold Ryley Matthews. “I feel very honoured to play the role of Gabriella,” said Giesbrecht. It has given me a greater understanding of what they went through.” Matthews said he is very much enjoying his role. “I’m enjoying every moment of it,” he said. “The play is bound to make people cry,” he added. During the play, the children want to make a newspaper, but Hoffman, who tries to remain the voice of reason, discourages such an activity, though he does end up publishing a little article to impress Gabriella. Grutterink finds the role fascinating. “As Eva, when the first person dies and I realize we are not going to get out, I begin to realize how valuable life is,” she said. Johanna Lunmann, 17, in Grade 12, said it is difficult to play the role of a sixyear-old.
“You have to remember you might not know what’s going on. As Jana I finally realize, when my doll breaks, that I am going to have to depend on myself. Jana cries a lot, but that (incident) made her grow up a little.” High school drama teacher Shauna Murdock said the students have worked hard on the play. “I wanted them to do a drama and I wanted them to appreciate and understand the holocaust and how it happened. I don’t want them to forget.” The play is to be held at The Peter Lougheed Community Centre May 13 and 14 as part of a dinner theatre. Tickets are available at the school.

BY TREENA MIELKE A tax break for Rimbey developers introduced last year will be re-visited. The agreement allows residential spec built homes to remain at the bare land tax rate for the duration of one year from the time the construction is complete. The reduced rate is available for one year and a minimum of two spec homes must be built and a maximum of five must be completed to participate in the program. Construction must not take longer than one year. The incentive was developed to align with the municipal government act and attract additional residential development within the town’s boundaries. However, developer Paul Kusch, who attended Monday’s council meeting had some concerns with the incentive. He said in view of the present economic situation developers may be only able to build one home, but still deserved a tax break. “I don’t feel you guys are working with developers,” he said. “I don’t really think you’re helping the builders. I think you should reduce it to one. I really think you should re-think this.” Mayor Rick Pankiw said the intent of the tax incentive was to ensure developers were singled out for the incentive, and it wasn’t available to residents who had another full-time job, but were building their own home. However, council agreed to re-open the discussion at its first meeting in May.

Earth Day info fair coming to Beatty House BY TREENA MIELKE The Rimbey Heritage House Society is a down-to-earth grass routes organization that is doing their part to recognize Earth Day. An Earth Day Information Fair will be held at the Beatty Heritage House on Sat., April 23 from 1 to 4 p.m. and will provide a wealth of information to people in the area. Leading off the info sessions is Dr. Christina Seidel of the Recycling Council of Alberta who will speak on strategies for living ‘waste free’ whether its in homes or businesses. A tri-party agreement between Rimoka, the town of Rimbey and developer Stan Cummings came up for questioning at the Monday council meeting. Earl Giebelhaus, who was in the gallery, asked council about the agreement regarding the proposed new lodge.

Under the terms of the agreement, he said he wanted clarification that the anticipated $340,000 cost of the road construction was to be shared by the town, Rimoka and the developer with the developer paying $200,000. Giebelhaus wanted council to clarify if the invoice had been paid. However, council agreed they would have violated their council’s procedures bylaw by answering this ques-
tion as it did not pertain to the agenda of the council meeting. “We are not prepared for answering questions (such as that) in an open meeting,” said Coun. Paul Payson. “I respect council’s decision,” said Mayor Rick Pankiw. Acting CAO Donna Tona said the question needs to be put in writing and sent to administration. “The question was out of order.”

So, a pretty busy road (2A) is merging with a high-speed freeway, and you’ve got 50 km/ hr traffic driving into a merge lane that isn’t very long to begin with. I was taught that, when merging, you speed up to match the traffic you’re merging with, but in this situation you literally have to put the gas pedal to the floor just to get up to the speed limit that few motorists are following anyway. Weird. But one of the most alarming things I’ve noticed not just about Wetaskiwin and Leduc, but the Edmonton Capital region in general is the pathetic state of public parking lot driving. I like to park further out in large parking lots because I don’t like other drivers near my car. From my experience, some people couldn’t care less if they shove their door open and chip my car. I care, but they certainly don’t seem to. Hence, I end up walking across some parking lots. That’s okay. I need the exercise. But you have to keep you eyes peeled, because people drive stupidly fast in local parking lots, and they don’t seem to care that all laws of the road apply to public parking lots (stopping, yielding the right-of-way, traffic lanes, signal lights etc.), and they don’t seem to care that pedestrians are around. At all. Judging by the number of pedestrian collisions in the capital region, it behooves us all to employ “defensive walking,” not just “defensive driving.” Again, consideration comes into the equation. Sadly, it doesn’t seem consideration is a virtue that’s in great supply on our local roads. Budget 2016 moves Alberta forward Budget 2016 - The Alberta Jobs Plan moves Alberta forward by supporting families and businesses through a tough economy, promoting job creation and economic diversification, and carefully controlling government spending. The Alberta Jobs Plan is built on four key pillars: supporting families and communities; investing in infrastructure; diversifying our energy industry and energy markets and supporting Alberta business. “Faced with a 90 per cent drop in non-renewable resource revenue, Albertans are confronted with a choice that will have profound consequences for generations to come. When oil prices fell in the past, governments responded with reckless and extreme cuts and Alberta families paid the price. Our choice is to move Alberta forward and not turn back the clock by repeating those damaging mistakes. Our plan supports Alberta families and businesses as we build a more resilient, diversified economy and carefully control government spending.” Budget 2016 includes a plan to carefully control government spending to achieve more than $600 million in savings over the next two years. Bentley crime strategy information meeting held BY JUNE NORVILA A local community policing information night was held for Bentley area residents the third week of March in the old Bentley Community Hall. Bentley town council had organized the meeting. Presenters were Sylvan Lake detachment commander Staff Sergeant Gary Rhodes and Sergeant Jeff McBeth as well as Lacombe County Senior Peace Office Julian Veuger and Peace Officer Brett Miller. Both groups clarified their roles within the community and explained what they can and cannot do. Peace officers have no authority in criminal activity or complaints. The RCMP consider Bentley a safe community. Statistics presented showed Bentley was down in total offences from 2014 to 2015. The number of drug possession offenses and trafficking offences didn’t change, nor did impaired driving offenses. Criminal code offenses like arson counterfeiting, bail violations, breach of probation and disturbances actually dropped 23 per cent. Homicide, robberies, assaults, and sex offences dropped by 65 per cent. The only area that increased in Bentley was break and enters, vehicle thefts, and fraud. It had climbed over the year by 22 per cent. About 80 per cent of Lacombe peace officers duties are Monday through Friday with patrol hours approximately ten hours per day five days per week. Other hours are spent on weekends and for special events and emergencies. They say they support each other and other communities when possible. They gave tips on how to make the community safer like businesses leaving a light on in their business at night and not blocking windows with posters or ads.
There seems to be a perception that police are not around enough, but middle of night patrols are probably not seen, and if around too often there would be complaints about that too. RCMP asked residents to report any and all suspicious activity or crimes, but not by calling 911. Call the Sylvan Lake detachment directly at 403-858-7200. Files can be collected, and some information from one report might tie in with another report and help solve a case. Most attendees felt they better learned the difference between the RCMP and local county peace officers and that they may be patrolling more often than thought. During the two-hour session people were given the chance to ask questions. When asked what the biggest problem in Bentley was, some answered thefts. Others consider traffic to be a bigger concern. It was considered to be a fairly good turnout with 38 town residents and 19 county residents signing the attendance book, and some probably missed signing in. Most of council and some staff were there. “It was very informative. I am glad I went. I wish more had come,� said business owner/home owner Sheila KelbaWarawa. “It helped me understand their duties better and how to try to protect my business.� Some felt the RCMP did not fully answer the questions they asked. One comment was that some of the people that complain didn’t bother to attend the meeting and they may have learned a lot if they had come. Some felt a full time policeman might fix the problem but that would be “unrealistic logistically and financially,� stated Joan Dickau. Special bolts to attach license plates that need a special tool to undo them
were handed out. It was agreed that things happen in
cycles and that a bad economy is sometimes a driver of increased crime.

JOHNSTON It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to Sharon Irene Johnston (nee Kanten) of Rimbey, Alberta. Sharon passed away in the early hours of Friday, April 8, 2016 at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre at the age of 71 years, after a long and hard-fought battle with cancer. She spent her final days in the excellent care provided by the staff of the Rimbey Hospital, for which we are all grateful. Sharon was born in Edmonton, but lived in Halkirk, Alberta for her preschool years. She then moved to Sylvan Lake where she attended school at what is now H.J. Cody School, and then high school at Lindsay Thurber in Red Deer. After high school, Sharon took nursing courses in Calgary, and later worked at the Holy Cross Hospital and the Calgary General, as well as the Red Deer Regional Hospital. The last 21 years of her career were spent taking care of those less fortunate at Michener Centre in Red Deer. The retirement years found Sharon on a hobby farm, where she enjoyed working with cattle and horses. She enjoyed outdoor activities and traveling. “Sharon will always be remembered by the friends she has made during her time with us.” Sharon will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her husband of 37 years, Ron Armstrong of Rimbey; and three children: her son, Darrell (Chris) Johnston of Lacombe and their family, Cassandra and Haley; her daughter, Teresa (Perry) Ronca of Winfield and their family, Hayden and Jared; and her son, Jason (BettyAnn) Johnston of Victoria, B.C. and their family, Madison and Ashley. She will also be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by two sisters: Susan (Wally) Penner of Lethbridge and their family, Kelly and Allison; and Coreen (David) Frey of Spruce Grove and their family, Josh, Andrew and Amy; and one brother, Randy (Gloria) Kanten of Blackfalds and their son, Chris; in addition to other close relatives, and many cherished friends. Sharon was predeceased by her parents, Adolph and Verona Kanten. With respect for Sharon’s wishes, no formal Funeral Service will be held. Cremation took place at the Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer, Alberta. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Sharon’s Memory may be made directly to the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre Administration, Box 440, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0. Insights from a three-generation Vancouver weekend Here in Alberta, it seems we have to coax spring along, begging it humbly to please show its lovely, tender face. And it does, but only allowing us glimpses. Crocuses, carefully hidden someplace that lots of us don’t even know about. Pussywillows, all grey and plump, adding an understated elegance to roadside ditches, all Treena Mielke dirty and wet and covOn The Other Side ered with winter’s dark, untold secret hoards of garbage. Trees, their stark outlines becoming blurry and soft against a defiant blue sky. It’s all there, soft, subtle signs that spring is on its way. But in Vancouver, spring is not like that. In Vancouver, spring does not hide. It is not subtle. It’s all over the place, flaunting itself, all fragrant and warm and beautiful. It’s so lovely it makes you want to skip down the sidewalk and wear flowers in your hair and just simply be one with the sun and the sky and the water. Well, on second thought I’m sure there are other ways to becoming one with the universe, but the flowers and skipping thing were the first thoughts that popped into my mind. It probably wouldn’t work for guys. But, for me, being a tag along grandma at the CHEER competition my granddaughter was in, I could not believe my luck at actually walking, well, flying, into a fresh, new world where spring wasn’t afraid to hide its face. For me, being number three in a three-generation weekend get together proved to be a delicious jumble of moments. During that time I learned what I had forgotten and a little more as well about teens. In the end, I learned I really didn’t know very much about that generation at all. Teens don’t wake up well! “Good morning, sweetheart,� I said to the 13-year-old in the bed, sounding all chirpy and cheerful, like I do, for a short time frame, after I’ve had my morning coffee. My granddaughter did not respond. She simply opened one eye, looked at me in horror like I was an alien from a different planet, closed it again and buried herself deeper under the covers. Right. Now I remember. Teenagers like to sleep and sleep and sleep some more. I also learned another thing I had forgotten. Time means nothing to teens. When my kids were kids, phrases like ‘hurry up, we are going to be late,’ were like a record stuck on the turntable, with the needle playing the same words over and over. Apparently, that same record is still playing. Still stuck. I also learned what the three most common words used by teens in the English language are. I don’t know. Mom: Where do you want to go eat? Teen: I don’t know. Mom: What do you want to do? Teen: I don’t know. Mom: What did you guys do? Teen: I don’t know. Finally, grandma, that would be me, said, “okay, this is what I want to do. I want to eat at a restaurant by the water. I want to make use all my senses. I want to watch the water and the boats and the people and marvel at it all.
And I want to breathe in deeply and let the smell of the salt water and the fresh spring air assault my nostrils. I want to taste the ocean. And I want to taste delicious food prepared by someone else and savour a glass of red.
And after I had said all that, I looked at my daughter and granddaughter who were staring at me somewhat quizzically and added, somewhat apologetically. “If that’s okay.� “It’s okay,� they said. Sometimes being the grandma is cool!
