The suicide bombing took place in a park that was crowded with families, with many women and children among the victims.

The Surrey Stingrays team was formed as part of the I CAN Play Hockey program operated by the Canucks Autism Network.

The goal of the tournament is to allow teams to travel and

experience the joy of playing hockey together in a safe and supportive environment, according to organizers.

Canucks alumni and Fin, the NHL team’s mascot, will be at the rink from noon to 1 p.m.

Admission is by donation, with all

proceeds benefiting the Canucks Autism Network, or CAN. Attractions include a silent auction with signed sports memorabilia and game tickets, prize draws, face-painting and more.

The on-ice action happens from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Other teams in the tournament are Kamloops Jr. Blazers, Penticton Upper Deck Vees, Vernon ScoreHawks, Central Okanagan Wildcats, South Island Ravens, Vancouver Island Vision and Vancouver Orcas.

“I want to see where this all takes me,” Huang said, “because I want to travel and do editorial nails, for photo shoots and fashion runways and stuff like that, so hopefully it’ll take me to where I want to be.”

When Donna May’s daughter died of an overdose in 2012, a drug that may have saved her life was within arm’s reach

t’s every parent’s worst nightmare – watching your child die.

Yet that was Donna May’s reality on Aug. 21, 2012.

That night, May returned home from walking her dogs to find her daughter Jac, a longtime addict, overdosing.

“I could hear the normal sounds of an overdose,” she said. “The laboured breath.

The snoring. The gurgling sounds. I flew upstairs.”

Jac was rushed to hospital, where May watched as her daughter’s ribs were broken during CPR. She stood by as Jac inhaled her own vomit before going into cardiac arrest and ultimately succumbing to the overdose.

Narcan, also known as naloxone, was within arm’s reach at the hospital that night. The synthetic drug, often referred to as an “overdose antidote,” could have saved her life.

It wasn’t used.

Surrey’s Gateway shelter uses it every day.

“I didn’t even know what naloxone was until I read the name of the drug in my daughter’s coroner’s report,” said May. Since that day, she’s fought for change: Change in access to naloxone, change in the perception of drug users and change in drug policy.

She’s spoken at countless conferences, held rallies on Parliament Hill, and founded momsDU, (Moms United and Mandated to Saving the Lives of Drug Users), which has lobbied for naloxone to be available without a prescription.

That became a reality on March 22. It’s exciting news for May. And she thanks the federal Liberal government.

“I have gotten further in having my words heard in the five months of Liberal reign, than I have in the 38 months I advocated for change during the Conservative government’s slamming of the door on my nose,” she said.

May now hopes to see naloxone become as common as a Band-Aid. “It should be in every medicine cabinet in the country and the world.

Just in case. There are no negative effects to this drug other than putting somebody into a withdrawal,” she remarked.

May said her grandson once asked her why she supported naloxone. After all, wasn’t is just an excuse to use drugs? A failsafe?

“I said, ‘Honey, if your friends are doing drugs anyway, don’t you want to be

able to save their life?’”

May now carries naloxone with her wherever she goes.

“I won’t let somebody else’s child die.”

Jac’s story is not one of peace or happiness. Her life revolved around drugs, crime and violence for the better part of her adult life.

She bounced between her mother and father’s home as a teen, spending some time in foster care. She had

be arrested and released immediately, then a day or two later there would be a major bust,” recalled May. “We weren’t the only ones who noticed. So did the dealers and traffickers.”

May believes a hit was put out on Jac – she was beaten in 2010, suffering a broken orbital bone, broken jaw and head lacerations.

“Jac believed she could recover,” said May. “She told me she wanted us to try to use that time to right some of the wrongs she had done.”

Jac’s opioid addiction “took off ” after being prescribed oxycontin for pain after falling down a flight of stairs at about 19.

After her father’s sudden death in 2004, May could tell something was wrong.

“She acted strangely and impulsively.” Jac was also pregnant with her third child, who she gave birth to at age 22. The children in her care were taken away by the ministry years later, after they didn’t attend school for weeks.

Not a year after, Jac and a boyfriend were on the run after a shooting during a drug deal went south, said May. Jac entered a women’s shelter but soon began stealing and prostituting herself.

“We began to notice a pattern that she would

Within months, Jac developed plural septic pneumonia and was in Surrey Memorial Hospital until just before Christmas, then returning to the recovery home. May said within a matter of days, she was dealing for a trafficker.

“It was then that I realized that it wasn’t a recovery home at all and was not only taking money from me, but also had Jac on welfare,” May added.

Weeks later, Jac was back in hospital. She had a flesh eating disease, contracted through drug use. Doctors told the family they’d have to amputate both legs.

When May arrived, doctors had not amputated,

surgeries.

The week of her death, May thought Jac had turned a corner. “For the first time I had hope. The morning of her overdose, she had gotten up in the morning, made her own bed, had a shower on her own for the first time and had dressed and put makeup on for the first time since becoming ill.”

Around noon, Jac received a phone call that disturbed her. “I found her crying at the garden table.

She told me she was so sorry for screwing up her children’s lives and felt she could never be forgiven.”

May soon realized Jac had removed her fentanyl patch, prescribed for the pain of her flesh-eating disease.

“She showed signs of flushing it down the toilet.

Our rule was I take it off, I inspect it. She broke that confidence,” said May.

After dinner, she walked the dogs and returned to find Jac overdosing.

She sat in hospital as Jac’s respirations and heart rate declined. Jac was revived and taken to critical care where she remained in a coma. She had been oxygen deprived for 22 minutes, by May’s count, and brain death is said to occur at just 15.

“If Jac survived off of artificial respiration, she would be severely handicapped. The family decided to let nature take its course.”

Jac died without waking up about eight hours later.

The autopsy revealed Jac had a fentanyl patch in her esophagus – the one she claimed to have flushed.

It also showed Cymbalta, a medication May takes for anxiety.

“Everything of hers was locked in a safe… My medication was in the bathroom drawer. I never thought for a minute you could overdose on it. But it was enough to throw her over the edge,” said May. “It was something that would allow her to end her life.”

May vows to continue her fight in honour of Jac, now turning her attention to safe injection sites and other drug policy reforms.

“This is for her,” she said. “But it’s for the others that have not yet died because they don’t need to… There is recovery.” see SAFE › page 9

Going through normal federal channels would optimistically take two to three years, he said.

“By then, there could be several thousand deaths. That’s not an appropriate response.”

Tyndall said the perception of addicts also needs to change.

“These people may be down on their luck but certainly don’t deserve to die. We need to be much more empathetic toward the plight of people and give them a fighting chance.”

On pace for 60 shootings despite 100 new officers

T

hose who were sure that putting more RCMP “boots on the ground” would be a panacea to Surrey’s street violence should be getting a rude wake-up kick right about now.

Last year, the city recorded 56 shootings, mostly of the driveby variety and many of them connected to a dial-a-dope turf war unfolding in Surrey and North Delta.

Hands were wrung, political speeches were spoken and promises were made to bolster the Surrey RCMP’s Mountie contingent by 100 new officers.

Presumably, nerves were settled.

Did the shootings stop? Nope.

So far this year, there have been 15 shootings.

The last one, at least at this time of writing, happened last Friday night in Panorama Ridge, in the area of 128th Street and 56th Avenue. Police reported that no victims were located.

If this pace continues, we can expect 60 shootings in 2016 — more than last year — despite having 100 more cops here.

Surrey RCMP brass, and local politicians, must be tearing their hair out. So what’s the solution?

urrey was once again recently named one of the most intelligent communities in the world, one of only seven cities to hold that honour.

If you were to tell that to a Vancouverite, they probably wouldn’t believe you. They might be too busy basking in the glory of recently being named the most livable city in North America.

The point is that both cities have their accolades, but why is Surrey often labeled with such an antagonistic reputation?

Think about this for a minute: How often do Surrey residents visit the city of Vancouver, and how often to Vancouverites go out of their way to visit Surrey?

I think you’ll find more people

fit into the first category. In my experience, those who fit into the second category likely visit our city to see family members or friends – not for the sake of checking out what Surrey has to offer.

For instance, my cousins won’t make a trip to Surrey unless they’re visiting family. They aren’t doing any sightseeing.

Out of the three main bridges that connect our city to the Lower Mainland, consider the Pattullo Bridge. What are Vancouverites greeted with when they cross the rickety bridge and enter our city?

None other than Whalley, which unfortunately is often considered the “black eye” of the city.

According to population estimates from Surrey RCMP’s website, Whalley/City Centre has a population of 81,096. It is the second smallest of the five districts in Surrey and sits ahead of only Cloverdale/Port Kells.

For a district with a substantially smaller population than the rest

of Surrey, it is disheartening to see that its violent crime totals are higher than any other district in the city.

Surrey RCMP data shows there is an average of 2,260 violent crimes reported per year in Whalley over a five-year period.

The only district with a comparable total is Newton, with an average of 2,128 violent crimes reported. In reality, the totals don’t compare when you consider that Newton has approximately 140,000 people, almost 60,000 more than Whalley.

To Surrey’s credit, the city is working to make the area less of an eyesore in what has been called a “transition period” in Whalley.

Expect the entire district to be revamped in the coming years, and this is already evident with the current projects underway in Whalley.

Brand new condominiums greet you as you enter Surrey via King George Boulevard, as well as near

Gateway SkyTrain station.

Innovation Boulevard has shed much positivity on the area. The work accomplished there has helped Surrey be recognized as one of the most intelligent communities in the world.

And just a few weeks ago, the Now reported on Surrey land developer Charan Sethi’s ambitious plan to turn the infamous Flamingo Hotel area into what he calls “Yaletown comes to Surrey.”

Sethi estimates the entire Flamingo block project will consist of 1,900 homes housing roughly 3,700 people.

The evolution of Whalley cannot be understated, which makes it unfortunate that violent crime overshadows some of the positive work in the community.

The reality is that over a five-year period, Whalley leads all Surrey districts in many unfavourable categories. There are more attempted murders, robberies, assaults and abductions reported

in Whalley than any other Surrey district.

Crime stats must be consumed with a grain of salt due to the ever-changing nature of crimes.

However, the numbers are enough to paint a portrait of Surrey’s shortcomings.

Unfortunately, this casts a dark shadow over a city with many young families with children, who represent a growing community with a bright future.

It makes outsiders associate Surrey with violence and crime without consideration for the beautiful Crescent Beach or the lush Green Timbers Urban Forest.

If the city wants to change that image, they might want to focus on tackling Whalley’s crime problem once and for all.

Surrey’s reputation won’t change until that black eye has healed.

I am tired of having to move because rents are too high, and rents are high because housing prices are high. I live in less than 500 square feet in Newton and in a sketchy neighbourhood. I pay $600 for this privilege. I would kill for a stable housing situation with an affordable condo I would have for life but it’s simply not going to happen. I don’t need luxury, I don’t need fancy. I need basic and functional - for an affordable price. A Yaletown-like development is not going to provide that for me – and it sucks.

Drivers have no control The Editor, Why are some car manufacturers and Google trying to invent self-driving cars when we already have autonomous vehicles?

We see them every day. Look, there goes one where the person behind the wheel is texting with one hand and drinking coffee with the other.

And there’s another where the driver is lighting a smoke and checking her makeup. Oh, and another where the driver is staring at the rear seat where the children are hitting each other and screaming.

And that one, where the driver is listening to music on headphones, devouring a hamburger and gazing at a map app on their phone.

Those cars must be driving themselves, as no human being has much control over them.

TERMINATION OF LAND USE CONTRACT

WHITE ROCK — The Whalley-based Independent Investigations Office is investigating an in-custody death after a 58-year-old woman died in a White Rock RCMP cell on Tuesday morning.

The deceased, whose name had not been released by press time, was arrested last Friday on an outstanding warrant and was scheduled to appear in Surrey provincial court on Tuesday.

She was examined by Emergency Health Services at 7 a.m., at the RCMP’s request, and at 10:38 a.m. a cell guard found her lying on the floor, unresponsive. She could not be revived.

The IIO was set up in September 2012 with the aim of keeping B.C. police officers accountable in cases involving in-custody deaths and serious injuries. Its spokesman, Marten Youssef, said the IIO will try to determine if there’s a connection between her death “and actions and inactions” of the officers.

Girl learning to drive smashes car into gym SURREY — Police suspect driver “inexperience” and “error” is what caused a Nissan Altima to crash into a Whalley gym on Monday afternoon.

Surrey RCMP Cpl. Scotty Schumann said the driver, whose age was not released, was learning to drive, with her mom in the passenger seat, when the car crashed into Fit for Women Gym at 10039 Whalley

Boulevard, at about 12:30 p.m.

She was apparently trying to park the car. Nobody was injured.

Schumann said there will be no criminal charges.

“Motor Vehicle Act infractions will be considered at some point,” he said.

The car, which had an “L” sticker visible on the back, was not seized for a mechanical inspection.

Surrey Muse group unites poets, writers, performers Five years in, gatherings give voice to local artists Gord Goble

I

t was now Timothy Shay’s turn. He strolls to the podium carrying his book like he’s walking from his kitchen to his living room carrying a TV remote – casually.

He addresses the gathering as if he’s sitting amongst friends in a pub, with humor and humility. But when he starts reading, his passion, and his sincerity, is unmistakable.

The book, a 2016 collection of his poetry called “The Dirty Knees of Prayer,” is gritty and great and sometimes a bit uncomfortable. Shay’s assertive reading only adds to its power. His stay at the podium is a highlight moment of the March 18th edition of Surrey Muse.

Founded in 2011 by local literary artists Sana Janjua, Fauzia Rafique, Randeep Purewal and Mariam Zohra D, Surrey Muse was initially conceived to give regional writers, poets and performers a place to go, a place where they could present their work and then talk about it amongst all in attendance.

Five years later, Surrey Muse is exactly that. Meeting on the fourth Friday of each month (except December) in Room 418 of the City Centre Library, the little group has been a constant in a city filled with change.

“When we created Surrey Muse, we were trying to build something that we needed and we thought other artists needed,” says co-founder Zohra D. “We wanted to break boundaries between mediums, so it’s not just a night for poets, not just a night for authors, not just a night for performers, it’s a place where all three can get together.

“It’s also a time to discuss with the artists the themes they brought up,” she continued.

“And we assume that the art that’s presented here would bring up something to discuss.

Some people are not used to it. Some audience members aren’t used to it – they don’t know what to ask. So usually one of our goals is to stimulate discussion so our audience gets practice at having that discourse.”

Gomathy Puri, a writer who didn’t seriously get into the craft until she’d retired, reads a lengthy passage from the still incomplete manuscript for her second book.

It’s the story of a grandmother from India, now living in the Lower Mainland.

“She’s concerned she doesn’t have a very good relationship with her grandsons, who were both born and raised here,” Puri explained. “She wants to pass on the legacy

Puri wanted feedback, and she got it. The discussion was lengthy.

It’s a good group. Comments are intelligent and attentive throughout the evening, and many are seemingly delivered via uncensored streams of thought. It’s funny, it’s sad, it’s serious. And it’s so open at times that a newcomer could be forgiven for thinking everyone had sipped a couple drinks beforehand.

Later, Heidi Greco comes to the front of the room. The South Surrey resident and former Surrey teacher and Vancouver Sun book reviewer reads a variety of her works – published poems from several books that showcase everything from environmentalism to domestic abuse.

They’re short verses and they hit home.

“I came back to writing in my 40s,” she says afterward. “My claim to fame, at least in Surrey, is that I was somehow appointed, I’m not exactly sure how, the ‘resident poet’

of the city in 2012, and was commissioned to write a poem about Surrey that I presented at city hall.”

At one point, Greco was joined at the podium by Surrey Muse co-founder Fauzia Rafique. The two traded verses and the room became even livelier.

“I came to Canada as a Convention refugee (someone who fears persecution),” says the soft-spoken writer and blogger.

“I was a journalist in Pakistan. There’s a lot of oppression there for people like me, especially women and progressive-thinking people.”

Rafique discusses the welcoming nature of Surrey Muse and the plans they have for the future, including the formation of a “critique group,” where “people can go to hash out stuff they’re creating right now.

We’re thinking of doing something around Gateway because it’s a bedraggled area of Surrey (and) see how people respond to it.

“Something else we want to do is ‘Surrey Muse at Large,’ a smaller version of this program, and take it to places like youth shelters and senior centres – traditionally places where people don’t get to have this sort of experience.”

The next Surrey Muse gathering is on April 22, once again in Room 418 of the City Centre Library. Food is served, donations are welcomed. Rec centre opens in North Delta

The expanded North Delta Recreation Centre officially opens Saturday (April 2) with a celebration that runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hit the gym with members of the Vancouver Giants starting at 12:30 p.m., hear music performed

Another round of “Coffee with a Cop” events is happening this week, as part of a Surrey RCMP initiative designed to connect the police force with residents and business operators in the area. Surrey’s first Coffee with a Cop series was piloted last summer. “Even though Surrey is a busy city, we know the value of a good, old-fashioned face-to-face chat with locals,” says Surrey RCMP Insp. Ghalib Bhayani, a community support and safety officer who hosts the events. At Winsor Gallery in Vancouver, works by former Now staff photographer Brian Howell are featured in the month-long exhibit “A Survey,” as part of the inaugural Capture Photography Festival. Country musicians rally to perform ‘Never Give Up’ benefit concert Tom Zillich

CLOVERDALE — Some local country musicians and others are staging a benefit concert to help a man they’ve never met.

The “Never Give Up” fundraiser at Shannon Hall on Saturday night (April 2) will feature performances by Rod Black, Jese Allen, FM and Trevor Dennis.

The concert will raise money for Surrey resident Brandon Durieux, 24, who is

receiving treatment for cancer at a hospital in Houston, Texas.

Durieux was diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia last summer, and his medical bills are mounting.

Black and his friend Lori Watson, a local mortgage broker, heard about Durieux’s health issues and began planning the concert.

“We don’t know him, but we heard about his story and wanted to help, that’s it,” Watson told the Now. Saturday’s event is presented by From the Heart of Country, a new charitable

organization launched

by Black and Watson.

“It all came together just three and a half weeks ago, so we’re flying by the seat of our pants,” Watson said, “but we have some incredible donation items and lots of help Rod Black with it. People have really stepped up.… The musicians are putting their heart and soul into it and are

jumping at a chance to help someone they don’t even know.”

Tickets for the concert are $25 via the website Fromtheheartofcountry.ca, which includes a detailed account of Durieux and his fight with cancer.

“We need ticket sales,” Watson said Monday. “Lots of people say they’re coming but we need the tickets sold. (Shannon Hall) holds 500 people and we’re just over 200 in sales. It’s going to be a fun night, we just need to fill that place.”

Two-day FVDED festival returns to Holland Park WHALLEY — FVDED in The Park, a twoday festival of cutting-edge music, will return to Surrey’s Holland Park on July 2 and 3.

An estimated 28,000 people are expected to attend the second annual event, to feature more than 30 artists from across the globe on its three stages.

The two-day festival is aimed at a younger, dance music-loving crowd.

The Value of Sight How the lives of three Licensed Opticians and one Stenberg student have been impacted by eye care

While growing up in the Caribbean nation of Trinidad and Tobago, Regian dreamed of working in post-secondary education, and eventually chose to pursue a degree in further mathematics. “I was always interested in science; biology and anatomy were my favourite subjects, so I felt like math was just a natural progression of that interest.” After immigrating to Canada, Regian considered a career in civil engineering, but was discouraged by the thought of having to repeat years of undergraduate training. Having worked in an optical store in Trinidad, Regian pursued a similar position in Canada. “I took a part-time position in an optical store, and eventually I had the amazing fortune of working alongside Klaus Sebok.” Sebok is a German-born eyewear designer who owned one of the most avant-garde luxury boutiques in Vancouver, Optique 2000 on Robson Street. Widely respected in the optical industry, Sebok is best known for designing the eyeglasses worn by Christopher Reeves in the original Superman film that debuted in 1978.

Regian spoke fondly of his former mentor, whom he credits for shaping the latter half of his career. “Even though he has been retired for almost ten years, Klaus is still famous throughout the industry. He designed frames for many celebrities: people like Elton John, Robin Williams, and Steve Martin, and played such a large role in the elevation of glasses from a medical necessity or a hindrance into the fashion accessory they are today.” Now employed as an Optician at FYidoctors, Canada’s largest eye care provider, Regian’s days are spent “interacting with patients,

managing employees, edging glasses, inventory management it’s a bit of everything” Regian laughs.

Regian’s sentiments were closely echoed by Raj Mann, another Stenberg College instructor who is also a Licensed Optician.

“My career path has been anything but ordinary, and that’s why I love being an optician: it can be anything you want it to be.

It’s such a diverse industry, you have the opportunity to develop your career and although it’s certainly not the most important thing, all of these areas have the possibility to be financially lucrative.”

higher. Regian spoke of an industry acquaintance who works as a Sales Representative for a high-end eyeglass brand and earns over $300,000 annually. “While he’s certainly an outlier, there are opportunities for benefits, incentives, bonuses and commission that can increase your annual salary.”

As a former business owner-turned contractor, Raj has also seen firsthand the financial benefits and flexibility that can come with being a Licensed Optician. “I initially began my career working at an optical chain and, after a few years, I was ready to venture out on my own. Having worked in eye care, I saw a growing need for services aimed at seniors and I established my business, Eyes in Motion, a mobile lens delivery system, to address that need. I eventually opened a location at Simon Fraser University, and then one in South Surrey. I now contract myself out, and actually work on film and television sets, fitting actors with specialty lenses. In the past, I’ve worked on the set of Supernatural, iZombie, and even the Star Trek movie. My career has been a great ride, and I’ve enjoyed every minute

When I placed the glasses on her face she was just amazed at what she could see and the vision that she had been missing. It was then that I realized the impact that a piece of glass and some wire could have on a person’s life.”

In 2011, Nela founded The Diskordanse Company, a professional dance troupe based at the XBa studios, with a mandate to offer paid work to XBa-trained dancers, XBa faculty members and professional dancers. In October of 2015, Diskordanse became incorporated as a non-profit society. For the 2016 International Dance Day event, Diskordanse took on the role of production company and secured a cultural grant from the City of Surrey to help make this project a reality.

This year’s performance is entitled “Blueprint for a Better Place.” With help from Tracy Tichelman (president of Diskordance) and event co-ordinator Grete Partridge, the staging of “Blueprint” is a true collaboration between Diskordanse company and XBa dancers, plus Scottish, Serbian and bhangra dancers, with artists of different mediums as well.

Groups performing include SKUD Zavicaj Vancouver, Keri’s Scottish Highland Dance and Hardeep Singh Sahota and his Royal Academy of Bhangra.

“Unfortunately, we’re still having the families kick in some money for us to make the trip, but I suppose that’s just a price of our success.

It’s a pretty cool opportunity to go there and play for a berth in the national championship at the midget level.”

At South Surrey Arena on March 19, the Hawks won the BCMML’s Cromie Memorial Trophy with a convincing 9-4 win over Cariboo Cougars. NEWTON — A new club will be looking to bring the lumberjack out in Surrey.

Bad Axe Throwing is opening its first B.C. location in Newton this May. The axe throwing club – that’s right, they throw axes – is looking to chop a big slice out of Surrey’s special event market.

Jesse Guzman, Bad Axe Throwing’s chief axe thrower and operations manager, said urban axe throwing is taking off in Canada – and he’s sure Surrey is going to love it.

“We’re sure that it’s going to work in Surrey.”

Bad Axe Throwing is expecting to have 10 locations throughout Canada by the end of summer and will then look to expand to the U.S. Guzman said the club is mainly looking to draw special events like birthday parties, bachelor or bachelorette parties and corporate team building exercises.

And although you are likely to show up as an amateur axe thrower (“pretty much everyone is,” Guzman said) the club’s goal is to have you hurling an axe accurately – and safely – in no time.

“We aim to have everybody hit the bullseye within the first five throws,” Guzman said.

Bad Axe Throwing is bringing B.C.’s first urban axe throwing club to Newton. It expects to host an open house in Mid-May. And what’s the key to doing that? Follow through, he said.

“Try to throw the axe through the wall – throw it as hard as you can.”

Guzman says there’s good reason urban axe throwing is taking off in Canada.

“It’s a little edgy and is definitely unique and exciting,”

he said. “It’s like darts on steroids.”

Verdict Engine options have not be confirmed for our Canadian market but a good guess is the existing 200hp turbo 4-cylinder will be put to work and hopefully a refined TDI diesel version. This car has been engineered to take the TDI and the intention is for it to come here, we will just have to wait until the TDI mess is cleared so we can get this next Tiguan with that fuel saving engine.

The daylight hours are short near the Arctic Circle but having a few hours to drive the Tiguan over snowy roads, through a winter driving course and spending some time looking it over, the wait will be worth it.
