The benefits of reading Many people are avid readers, feeling that a good book remains the most entertaining form of escapism. But reading provides more than just an opportunity to leave the daily grind behind. • Reading can improve brain function.A recent study from researchers at Emory University discovered that reading a novel can improve brain function in various ways. During the study, researchers found that reading fiction improves connectivity in the brain. In addition, reading fiction improved readers’ ability to put themselves in other peoples’ shoes, which might help them relate better to people in both the present and future. • Reading can benefit long-term brain health. While readers engrossed in a great book might only be worried about what’s coming on the next page, the benefits to reading are much more longterm than the next chapter. Researchers at the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago found that reading is one of a handful of mentally stimulating activities that can benefit brain health in old age. In their Rush Memory and Aging Project, researchers
examined nearly 300 elderly men and women, giving them tests of memory and thinking throughout the final years of their lives. When participants, who were surveyed as to how often they engaged in mentally stimulating activities such as reading, passed away, their brains were examined for signs of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Researchers discovered that the participants who engaged in mentally challenging activities most often had slower rates of memory decline. In addition, even those who had symptoms of brain damage that are commonly associated with Alzheimer’s and dementia seemed to benefit from the stimulation that mentally challenging activities produced. • Reading can help reduce stress. Another big benefit of reading is its relationship to stress. According to a 2009 study from researchers at the University of Sussex in England, reading can reduce stress by up to 68 percent. In addition, reading might help relieve that stress even faster than other forms of stress relief because it allows for a more immediate escape from the stress of daily life.

A healthy smile makes a good first impression As the eyes are the window to the soul, so the mouth is the window to the mind.Your smile is the first thing people see – what do they see? Surely there is more to Oral Health than mere freedom from pain, decay, infection, cancer, periodontal disease, etc. Your >total< health begins with your BC dental hygienist! While many dental hygienists work as employees in dental offices, they also work independently in residential care facilities, mobile practices and free-standing clinics. Since the first dental hygiene clinic in Canada was opened in 1995 in Kelowna, hundreds of independent dental hygiene practices (IDHP) have been created all over Canada. Working independently enables the dental hygienist to treat clients according to their individual
situations instead of an employer’s schedule. Independent hygienists can do more than the usual “cleaning” routine: the scope of practice also includes placing sealants, providing temporary repairs on teeth or crowns or bridges, whitening teeth as well as fabrication of sports guards. IDHPs can work with people who experience barriers to dental care, and provide more in-depth treatment if desired. Interim Stabilization Therapy is a popular new service that reduces pain, preserves tooth structure and creates stability for clients until such time as they are able to access a dentist for more permanent repairs. Would you like to experience what an independent dental hygienist can do for you? ~ Submitted by the Smile People Dental Hygiene Clinic

Many people live with eye disease or eye defects. Some of these conditions have only a minor impact on their lives, while others can lead to irreversible vision loss. Let’s try to shed some light on this subject. You most likely know someone who has myopia, or nearsightedness. No matter the age of the person, he or she struggles to see distant objects clearly and probably has to wear glasses or contact lenses. There are also many people who
have hyperopia, or farsightedness. That means their vision is blurry when they focus on near objects. Genetics plays a big role here. Presbyopia is a vision change that often occurs Continued on page 10

Common Eye Conditions Continued from page 8 in a person’s middle age. It prevents sufferers from being able to focus in the close-up range. You’ll often see a person with presbyopia extending their arms in order to read a piece of paper or a restaurant menu. Astigmatism is included in the category of focusing problems. People who have this kind of vision defect can clearly see an object they are looking at directly, but their peripheral vision may be blurred.
None of the abovementioned issues are especially harmful, although they usually entail a lot of inconvenience for the sufferers. However, there are other common, but more serious, eye diseases such as cataracts, retinal detachment, glaucoma and macular degeneration. With advances in technology, many of these conditions can be cured or treated to improve quality of life. In light of all that, having your eyes examined on a regular basis makes a lot of sense.

Yoga has many benefits
Yoga literally translates as “to yoke”.Yoga is union. In yoga, we practice asanas, the Sanskrit word for “seat”. The practice basically invites us to take a seat and listen. As we unite with our physical bodies, we become aware of our breath, thoughts and emotions. This mindful awareness brings us into the present moment. “To me, yoga is a way to connect to our minds and our hearts, by getting into our bodies using the breath,” says registered yoga teacher (RYT), Gillian Games. “When we are able to get in touch with our inner wisdom, there is a ripple effect in the way we relate to ourselves, others and our communities.” Yoga supports and is supported by the idea of community. “It brings people together for a common purpose,” says RYT, Raina Mack. It seems very special to me; to share space and time with others, in a world where there is so much separateness and loneliness. The sense of belonging brings me a feeling of peace, as well as love and acceptance for myself.” More and more yoga is being recognized, not only a physical practice, but a powerful life tool for regulating one’s mind and emotions. Molly Folliott is an Aboriginal Education Worker who has included yoga in her Wellness Group for girls at Eagle River Secondary. “We have chosen yoga as part of our
Wellness Group because we are promoting balance of mind, body and spirit, and the practice of yoga incorporates these ideas nicely,” she says, adding that student reviews have been positive. “Students report feeling refreshed, less anxious and calmer. Often our discussions after classes at I Am Yoga are about the mental and emotional benefits, not just the physical experience.” Jessie Kennedy is an ERS student who has been introduced to yoga through the Wellness Group. “Make time for yoga,” she writes.“It is a rewarding experience. The meaningfulness in practice runs deeper than physicality. It allows for one to reconnect with themselves spiritually in a world where it is not a simple task.” Cori Miller -- better known as Mrs. Miller for her position at Sicamous Preschool –has also incorporated yoga into her classes. “I decided to share the practice when I realized, that after 20 years of teaching, I was seeing increased signs of stress and anxiety in my tiny students,” she says. “I wondered if the yoga practice could calm the mind, quiet the body and help with stress and anxiety like it does for myself. The outcome has been amazing. They are so responsive and I see the benefits first hand.” ~Submitted by I Am Yoga

Furnace & Air Duct Cleaning
Some allergens in the form of dust, mold, pet hair and many more share our homes with us and accumulate in our HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) system, making it impossible for homeowners to clean. Having your HVAC System cleaned will eliminate dirt, dust and debris built up in your home‘s air duct system. Is your home constantly dusty? Does anyone in your family suffer from asthma, allergies or any other respiratory related illnesses? Does your residence have a consistent odor; smelling like mildew, mold, tobacco smoke or any other harmful airborne contaminates? Are you worried for the safety of your family regarding the quality of your indoor air? Are you proud owners of a newly built residence and have just moved in? If you answered yes to any of these, then chances are, you need your furnace and air ducts cleaned. Generally, the average residential home should have their HVAC system cleaned every 2-3 years. This includes new homes as well. New home HVAC systems usually contain post construction debris and chemical contaminates which then, is distributed throughout your air duct system and released into your indoor air. Older
homes usually contain dirty and dusty furnace filters, duct registers, stagnant dust holding odors and constant dust build-up throughout your home. These are all just a few a signs indicating your HVAC systems needs to be cleaned. What are the benefits of a Clean HVAC System and will this improve the quality of my indoor air? Maintaining a clean HVAC system and providing proper filtration control will reduce the risk in airborne contaminates in your home and will provide a clean pure air environment. ~ Submitted by Chris Bartsch Modern PurAir

Osteoporosis Quick Facts
Con sul is fretation e
Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones that occurs when a person loses too much bone, produces too little bone or both. Though the disease is most often associated with women over 50, anyone can suffer from osteoporosis, which weakens bones and can make them more susceptible to breaks. Exercise is a great way for men and women to build and maintain strong bones in an attempt to prevent the onset of osteoporosis. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, weight-bearing exercises can help build and maintain bone density. But the NOF notes that men and women who have suffered broken bones due to osteoporosis or those at risk of such breaks may need to avoid highimpact weight-bearing exercises, which include dancing, hiking, jogging, and jumping rope, among others. For those whose physicians who suggest they avoid highimpact weight-bearing exercises, low-impact weightbearing exercises can help them strengthen their bones. Such exercises may involve low-impact aerobics and using cardiovascular machines, such as elliptical trainers, stair-step machines and treadmills. Additional exercises that can benefit men and women looking to prevent or combat osteoporosis can be found at www.nof.org.

Feelings of loneliness and isolation are common among the senior population. This is due, in part, to the large percentage of seniors who end up living alone later in life. As people get older, their likelihood of living alone only increases, as many have fewer family members or friends around to provide company and care. Despite the large numbers of Baby Boomers living throughout North America, senior isolation is still a concern. According to the senior housing resource A Place for Mom, the following situations can result from senior isolation. • Studies from the National Center on Elder Abuse show a connection between social isolation and higher rates of elder abuse. • Feelings of loneliness can be linked to poor cognitive performance. • Loneliness is associated with more depressive symptoms among seniors. • A 2010 study published in Psychology and Aging indicated a direct relationship between loneliness in older adults and increases in systolic blood pressure over a four-year period. Visiting with seniors and promoting social connections can help them avoid feelings of isolation.

Laughter contributes to good health
R e s e a r c h indicates that people who laugh a lot are much healthier and may live longer than those who don’t find time to chuckle. A good, deep belly laugh can provide your body and mind with a great workout. Dr. Lee Berk at the Loma Linda School of Public Health in California found that laughing lowers levels of stress hormones and strengthens the immune system. The organization Laughter Works, which teaches people how and why to laugh, says laughter can cause blood pressure to drop, blood to become oxygenated and endorphins to kick in, which can improve mood. And that’s just the beginning. Laughing can help reduce stress and promote stronger relationships between people who laugh together. Data indicates children around the age of six laugh the most, laughing roughly 300 times per day, while adults average only 15 to 100 laughs per day.

One key to optimal health: YOGA To establish a yoga practice at any time in your life is a strong commitment to caring for both your body and mind. In doing so, your inner self or inner spirit is also nurtured. The Iyengar method of hatha yoga taught at Shuswap Yoga emphasizes an approach that begins with finding stability, first, followed by improving mobility. What follows is enhanced flexibility and strength in the body – from bones, to muscles to joints and the mind. With an intention to do no harm, yoga postures are practiced in sequences to create space in the joints, lengthen the spine and move the practitioner from a place of comfort to greater awareness. We become more alive, finding our resilience again despite the challenges of hyper flexibility, injuries, aging, the stresses that life presents us, and the list goes on…. Shuswap Yoga uses a unique prop: a rope wall offers both support and challenge to all levels in the practice of the postures. Other yoga props, like
blankets and foam and wood blocks are used when necessary. A yoga practice is meant to nourish the body over the long term; the Iyengar method pays attention to correct alignment that over the long term brings the body to a place of better balance and wisdom that supports moment-to-moment awareness and a more mindful presence to life. An actress once said,“without discipline, life has no meaning”. Practicing yoga, even once a week, offers a discipline to enjoy not just a more meaningful life, but also one with greater ease as we learn to really live in our bodies and make the most of our lives. BKS Iyengar (for whom this method is named) once said: “Look after the root of a tree, and the fragrant flowers and luscious fruits will grow by themselves. Look after the health of the body, and the fragrance of the mind and richness of the spirit will follow.” ~ Laurie Ankenman (Shuswap Yoga co-owned with Donna Rao)

Sun protective clothing shields from UV rays According to the National Institutes of Health, sun-protective clothing can protect adults and children from the sun’s ultraviolet radiation, exposure to which can cause skin cancer. Sun-protective clothing is typically made with fabrics designed to absorb or reflect ultraviolet, or UV, radiation. Much like sunscreen is rated for its sun-protection factor, or SPF, sunprotective clothing is given an ultraviolet protection factor, or UPF. UPF even provides a broader spectrum
of protection than SPF, protecting from both ultraviolet A and B radiation, whereas SPF protects largely against ultraviolet B. Clothing with a UPF rating of 40 or greater provides excellent protection, blocking nearly 98 percent of UV radiation. Doctors recommend that people who are at greater risk of skin cancer, such as those with blue eyes, fair skin, a large number of moles, and red hair, wear sun-protective clothing when exposed to sunlight for extended periods of time.

Sneak fruits and veggies into recipes Fruits and vegetables are the building blocks of a healthy diet. But many people do not eat the recommended number of servings of produce. That’s especially true among growing children, who can benefit greatly from the vitamins and nutrients fruits and vegetables provide. Researchers at Concordia University found that Canadian adults ages 30 to 60, especially those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, aren’t consuming the daily recommended levels of fruits and vegetables. Anyone who eats roughly 2,000 calories per day should strive to consume between two to three cups of vegetables and two cups of fruit per day. Produce helps to fight disease because it contains healthy antioxidants, fiber, minerals and vitamins. Eating four cups per day may seem difficult, but there are many ways to incorporate fruits and vegetables into everyday recipes. * Substitute pureed fruit, like figs, pears and apples, for oil in recipes for cakes and cookies. This will ensure the baked goods are moist but with a lot less fat.
* Add fresh berries or raisins to breakfast cereals and oatmeal. * Add cauliflower or squash to boiled potatoes before mashing them to increase the nutritional punch and flavor of mashed potatoes. * Blend fruits and vegetables to create smoothies for breakfast or lunch on the go. * Bake hearty muffins or breads with sweet potato or carrots in the batter. * Mix stewed tomatoes in with your broth soup base to make a vegetable or chicken soup even more nutritious. * Opt for vegetables piled high atop a slice of pizza in lieu of meats or extra cheese. * Divide your dinner plate into quadrants, filling half of the plate with vegetables, one quarter with meat and the remainder with a whole grain. * Replace lettuce on a sandwich or burger with a fresh leaf of spinach. While you’re dressing your sandwich, add a slice of tomato, too. * Substitute fresh vegetables and fruit slices for chips when serving dips and salsas. Kale chips are growing in popularity.

How to get a good nights sleep World Sleep Day, promotes sleep as part of a healthy lifestyle. This year’s slogan is Good Sleep Is a Reachable Dream. On average, adults need eight hours of sleep per night. But what if you suffer from insomnia? Here are some tips that will help you fall asleep effortlessly every night. Bedding You’re having trouble falling asleep? Your mattress could well be the source of the problem. Firm, thick or soft? Foam, springs or latex? Find one that is right for you. You can even combine different levels of firmness (half soft, half firm) if your partner’s preferences differ from yours. Keep in mind that it’s always best to try out the mattress in the store. You should also be very careful when choosing pillows. Exercise Do you like cycling, running, skiing, dancing or yoga? Expending energy during the day will help you sleep better. Are you stressed out? Get some exercise; physical activity uses up the adrenaline that’s generated by anxiety. However, avoid working out just before going to bed, as your body needs
time to calm down. Electronic devices Electronic devices (TV, computer, video games, etc.) act as stimulants and should be switched off well before bedtime. Instead, opt for calming activities: have a warm bath, read a few pages of a book or practice a relaxation technique. Ideally, you should repeat the same routine night after night so your brain recognizes the signal that it’s time to go to sleep.

Psychotherapy: relieving psychological suffering Having someone to confide in is vital when you’re living through difficult times or have a problem that seems insurmountable. It can also help when you’re stressed out or feel so bad about yourself that it affects your quality of life and your relationships. When talking to a friend or family member is no longer enough, a psychotherapist is the right professional to turn to.This specialist is not there to judge or criticize you, but to help you better understand yourself and find solutions to deal with life’s challenges. Psychotherapy is a recognized treatment for problems such as bereavement, separation, addiction, depression and interpersonal problems, all of which can cause a lot of emotional pain and suffering. Much more than just a temporary support for overcoming a difficulty or for reducing

distress, psychotherapy leads to a more satisfying life by helping you modify your counterproductive thought processes and behaviour. Psychotherapy begins with an evaluation to identify your needs, expectations, difficulties and goals. Take advantage of this first appointment to ask questions and ensure that the recommended approach suits you and that you feel comfortable and confident with the psychotherapist. The duration of a psychotherapy treatment, which generally involves weekly counselling sessions, depends on the nature of your problem and the goals you have set. Consequently, it may be spread out over just a few weeks or for several months so you have enough time to make all the necessary changes in your life.

Healthy habits that can have a lasting impact A long and healthy life is the ultimate goal for many people. While a host of factors beyond a person’s control, such as genetics, impact how long that person lives and how susceptible to certain medical conditions he or she may be, there are many things men and women can do to improve their chances of living long, healthy lives. • Keep working. While many working men and women dream of the day when they can leave the daily grind behind once and for all, they might want to think more about a second career than a long, carefree retirement. A study from British researchers published in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry found that each extra year that men and women work was associated with a six-week delay in the onset of dementia. • Stay on your toes. A healthy diet is a key component of a healthy lifestyle, but diet alone is not enough to promote a long and healthy life. According to the Johns Hopkins Medicine Health Library, the risks associated with a physically inactive lifestyle are considerable. Such risks include a greater risk of developing high blood pressure and coronary heart disease and even a greater
risk for certain cancers. In addition, physical inactivity can add to feelings of anxiety and depression. • Get your whole grains. Whole grains may be another key ingredient to a long and healthy life. Numerous studies have shown that increasing whole grain consumption can help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. Researchers who conducted a systematic review of studies examining the link between whole grains and type 2 diabetes prevention in 2007 found that eating an extra two servings of whole grains per day decreased a person’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 21 percent. • Visit your physician annually if not more frequently. While many people, especially those who feel healthy, are hesitant to visit their physicians, doing so may just save your life. Annual physicals and discussions with your physician may uncover a disease in its early stages when it is most treatable. Healthy habits improve peoples’ quality of life while also increasing the likelihood that men and women live long, healthy and productive lives.

What is clean eating all about?
Clean eating is a growing trend among people focused on health and wellness. A relatively simple concept of selecting foods that are minimally processed, clean eating intends to instill a greater understanding of the pathway between a food’s origins and the final products that end up on grocery store shelves and dinner tables. Choosing whole or “real” foods that are as close to their natural forms as possible is a staple of clean eating. The availability of convenience food products has never been greater, and not all packaged foods are unhealthy. But clean eating encourages consumers to be more aware of the ingredients in the foods they eat while selecting those foods that are minimally processed. Many foods designated as “clean,” including vegetables and fruits, whole grains, free-range meats, low-fat dairy products, unsalted nuts, and whole seeds, are straight from the farm. Another component of clean eating is eliminating or greatly reducing the consumption of refined sugar. Many health experts advise that refined sugar is a large contributor to unnecessary calories. Many people can get all the energy they need by consuming foods with natural sugars. If an ingredient list includes names you cannot

recognize or if the natural form of the food has been changed (i.e. removing the bran from whole grains), it cannot be included in a clean-eating plan. Also, foods that have a lot of additives, including salt, sugar and fat, are not classified as clean. Jessica Fanzo, assistant professor of nutrition at Columbia University, advises that not all food processing is bad. Processing is sometimes necessary to prevent pathogens that can lead to illness. For example, pasteurizing milk is a processing method, but one that

Healthy choices is necessary to stop the proliferation of bacteria. Even steaming foods is processing in some form, but it is not on par with some of the overly processed foods available. The benefits to clean eating are numerous. Increasing intake of fruits and vegetables can boost your immune system and serve as a nutritious way to maintain a healthy weight. Clean eating may help you become more conscious of everything from meal ingredients to portion sizes. Those interested in clean eating can begin slowly. Start to introduce more fresh fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and farm-fresh foods into your diet. Look for foods in their natural form, such as whole oats and other grains. Avoid highly refined ingredients and limit sugar and salt intake. Opt for fresh herbs and spices to season food. Over time you can make other changes. Adopting a clean-eating approach to their diet is a great way for men and women to start living healthy lifestyles. Speak with a doctor or nutritionist about healthy and effective ways to transition to clean eating.
Disadvantages of a protein heavy diet Protein-heavy diets became wildly popular in recent years, but many nutrition experts advise that people on highprotein diets avoid overdoing it when it comes to loading up on protein and reducing intake of carbohydrates. People on high-protein/low-carbohydrate diets may see their metabolisms change into a state of ketosis, which happens when the body goes from burning carbohydrates for fuel to burning its own fat. When fat is broken down, tiny bits of carbon known as ketones are released into the bloodstream as energy sources. This process produces weight loss by suppressing appetite and increasing the loss of water weight that stems from the increased elimination of fluids through urine that occurs during ketosis. However, a high-protein/ low-carbohydrate diet is not without its disadvantages. According to WebMD, the body produces ammonia as it breaks down protein. The long-term risks of high levels of ammonia in the body are unknown. In addition, people on high-protein diets excrete more calcium in their urine than those on more typical diets, and excessive calcium loss may lead to osteoporosis as men and women age. Men and women who avoid carbohydrates may not be eating sufficient amounts of fruits and vegetables, which are great sources of vitamins, fiber and antioxidants.

How to prevent sore muscles Do you have reduced mobility, pain and discomfort in your muscles after exercising? Don’t let it stop you from participating in your favourite sports. There are some simple ways to prevent or reduce muscle pain after a workout. These include exercising on a regular basis, as there is less likelihood of muscle soreness if your body is accustomed to a particular exercise. Warm up. Before you put your muscles to work, prepare them for the effort to come. Warming up oxygenates your connective tissue, which improves muscle flexibility. Make sure your warm-ups are adapted to your specific activity; ask a professional for advice. Respect your limits. If you return to an activity after a long break, don’t go overboard or you’ll put too much strain on your muscles. Whatever your
situation, you should always increase the duration and intensity of your workouts gradually and listen to your body. Drink lots of water.Water is essential before, during and after training. It rehydrates your cells and contains nutrients that produce the energy your muscles need during a workout. Water also increases tissue oxygenation and helps the muscles recover more quickly. After a workout, do some gentle stretching. Doing so won’t prevent sore muscles, which are a result of micro-tears in the muscle fibre, but it will help your body recover more quickly. Lastly, a gentle massage and a warm bath (a cold bath is preferable immediately after exercise) will help soothe aching muscles. A less intense physical activity, such as walking, may also be beneficial.

Acupuncture can improve health Do you know about qi, the vital energy that flows through the body’s meridians? If you don’t, it’s probably because you’ve never tried acupuncture. This traditional Chinese therapy acts on the qi to restore balance, thus helping improve health and alleviate pain. Acupuncture stimulates the body so that it can repair itself whenever possible. How? By stimulating specific areas called acupuncture points, which are located along the meridians. To do this, acupuncturists use special needles that they insert into the uppermost layer of skin. These needles are very fine, and when inserted the patient may find they feel like tiny mosquito bites. Acupuncturists may also use heat, pressure, a light electrical current or laser light to stimulate these points.

During an initial encounter, acupuncturists evaluate the patient’s energy balance in order to detect any imbalances and to understand the causes. They then decide on a treatment plan based on their observations and on the patient’s health. Above all, they will take into account family history and the recommendations of other health professionals who have been consulted. Can acupuncture really help you feel better? The answer is a definite yes. Clinical research has shown that acupuncture is an effective treatment against ailments such as migraines, arthritis, diarrhea, tendonitis, morning sickness, post-surgical pain and sprains. It also helps to reduce stress and treat depression.

A healthy child grows up to be a healthy adult Good life habits are often learned during childhood. Consequently, medical professionals recommend that young people exercise on a regular basis. This strengthens their hearts, muscles and lungs and helps them maintain a healthy weight. It also reduces the risk of developing various problems in adulthood. Physical inactivity Studies have shown that healthy adults were usually active when they were children. However, the reverse is also true. The more sedentary people were as children, the more they tend to remain so as adults. That kind of lifestyle can lead to all kinds of problems, including obesity, hypertension, high cholesterol and chronic diseases. Exercise and diet What can you do to ensure that your child grows into a healthy adult? Firstly, it is essential to incorporate physical activity into your family’s lifestyle and promote
a healthy and balanced diet. Here are some recommendations: • Walk or bike whenever and wherever possible. • Limit the number of hours spent in front of a screen (unless it’s a video game requiring physical effort). • Encourage your children to get involved with an organized sports team (soccer, hockey, etc.). • Enrol your children in classes (martial arts, swimming, etc.). • Involve your children in tasks that match their abilities (carrying groceries, shovelling the driveway, etc.). • Use the stairs instead of elevators. • Limit consumption of candies, soft drinks and fruit juices. • Serve fatty, sweet or salty foods only as “sometimes” treats.

Help your pet survive hot weather Harsh weather conditions can threaten the health of anyone, including the family pet. This is especially so in the summertime, when animals can easily and quickly get dehydrated. Extreme temperatures in the summer force many pet owners to keep their pets indoors during the daytime. But there are ways pets can survive a sizzling summer and still enjoy some fun in the sun. Pet owners can take the following precautions as the mercury rises so their favorite four-legged friends are not confined to the house when summer hits full swing. * Be attentive at all times. Pets do not hide their emotions well, and a pet that is struggling with the heat is bound to exhibit some symptoms. According to the ASPCA, symptoms of heat stroke in pets include, excessive panting or difficulty breathing, increased heart rate, drooling, mild weakness, stupor, collapse Each of these indicates a pet might be overheating, and a pet might also suffer from seizures, bloody diarrhea and vomiting when its body temperature is too high. When taking a pet outdoors in the heat, people should be mindful of these symptoms and be attentive to the animal’s condition at all times. * Trim the animal’s coat. Hair cut to about one
inch can help prevent overheating. When trimming the animal’s coat, do not cut closer than one inch, as anything less than an inch likely won’t provide any protection from the sun. * Only visit areas with ample shade. Pets can easily overheat when exposed to hot summer sun, even if it’s only for a few minutes. Go for walks in areas with ample shade so pets can still get outdoors but get only limited exposure to the hot summer sun. * Don’t take pets on chore runs. Chores may take just a few minutes, but those few minutes in a hot car can prove deadly for pets. Pets should never be left alone in a car on a hot day, when the car can quickly reach extreme temperatures. Some regions have even made it illegal to leave pets in unattended cars on hot days. * Steer clear of asphalt on hot days. The padding on pets’ feet can suffer considerably from hot asphalt, and this can prove very painful to animals. When walking pets on a hot day, avoid asphalt, which can cause pets’ body temperature to rise considerably, especially smaller pets whose bodies are closer to the ground. Stick to the grass or other surfaces that don’t get so hot under the summer sun.

There are so many medications out there these days, and we’re all getting older and perhaps a bit more forgetful; it sounds like a recipe for disaster. It’s a good thing your pharmacist is paying attention. March is Pharmacist Awareness Month, and the Canadian Pharmacists Association wants you to know that your pharmacist isn’t just a dispenser of medications anymore. He or she follows your file carefully and stays on top of what your doctors are prescribing. The job of the pharmacist in Canada has evolved in recent years. These professionals are now considered as vital members of patient health-care teams because of the role they play in managing multiple prescriptions. They offer one-on-one guidance for customers and even administer medications in some cases. Here’s a glance at some of the things your pharmacist may be licensed to offer, although it varies from province to province. • Administer a drug, such as a flu vaccine, by injection • Order and interpret lab tests • Change drug dosage or formulations • Provide emergency prescription refills • Prescribe for minor ailments and conditions • Renew and extend prescriptions What else is new in your pharmacy? E-prescribing is on the rise. The Canadian Pharmacists Association predicts that soon, most doctors will be sending prescriptions directly to your pharmacist with special software. The benefits of e-prescribing go hand in hand with those of electronic medical records: entire health-care teams have access to a patient’s treatment plan at all times and in its most up-to-date version. Consult the CPA website to learn more about what these professionals can do in your province, or talk to your own pharmacist about what’s new and how it affects you.
