You’d have to have been on the moon recently rather than in Alberta not to have experienced the backlash to the NDP government’s handling of the controversial Bill 6, also known as the The Enhanced Protection for Farm and Ranch Workers Act. In essence, the act requires WCB coverage for paid farm workers and grants a special ability that no doubt every reader perusing this would love to have at the work site: “workers will be able to refuse unsafe work that presents an imminent danger.”

According to Alberta Agriculture’s website, Bill 6 won’t apply to family, volunteers, kids doing chores or 4-H members.

One of the factors leading up to the ramming through of Bill 6 was the fact organized labour was apparently invited to give their two cents on the legislation, while farm families were not. Premier Rachel Notley’s government invoked closure on the Bill 6 debate, despite the fact that when she was an opposition politician, she critisized the PC government for doing the same.

A laughable reason, in fact the first reason voiced by the NDP government for introducing Bill 6, is that “The Government created the Enhanced Protection for Farm and Ranch Workers Act to bring the protection and compensation

of non-family farm and ranch employees in line with what’s already extended to other employees and similar to what’s in place in other provinces.” So they want to make Alberta look more like other provinces in Canada. Okay, let’s take a look at one of the provinces they seem to admire.

The Charbonneau Commission, also known colloquially as the Quebec corruption inquiry, has been an ongoing investigation into general corruption in the Quebec provincial government and specific corruption in how construction tenders are awarded. More simply, the inquiry has been tasked since 2011 with looking into crooked and corrupt business practices within the provincial government involving construction projects. Some of the investigations focused on successful bids

being linked to cash donations to politicians. Oh yeah, by the way, they’re also investigating the influence of Mafia on the Quebec government and its contracts. Not really a surprise, as Canadian historians are fully aware of the traditional presence organized crime has had in Quebec, ranging from La Cosa Nostra south of the border to violent outlaw bike gangs.

Definitely looks like a role model of a province the rest of the country should be looking up to.

Anyhoo, the backlash across Alberta of forcing this legislation on farm families without allowing them some meaningful input was substantial. It’s been some time in this province since thousands of people showed up to various government offices to protest; in fact, nothing really comes to mind. The NDP govern-

ment must have been thinking the same way because after they passed Bill 6 into law, Notley announced there would be some kind of consultation process on Bill 6. Despite the fact it was already law.

It’s interesting to see displayed on the provincial government website a little link right on the homepage that reads “How Government Works.” Apparently, in the world of the NDP majority, the government develops laws that affects families and an industry that’s existed in this province for 100 years, forcing substantial changes on the industry without consulting those affected.

Then, after the premier and her majority force the bill through the legislature, they insult anyone with a brain by offering to collect input from those affected. Seeing as how the bill is already law, the

consultation would appear to be nothing more than spin doctoring to address the public relations nightmare the NDP faced over Bill 6. However, judging by the thousands of people protesting the bill and the upcoming protest at the legislature March 8, it looks like the PR campaign failed.

Maybe the “How Government Works” link should include this useful advice for the premier and her government: don’t worry about what’s going on in Quebec. Worry about what’s going on in Alberta. Collect input from Alberta taxpayers first, then develop your law and present it at the legislature.

Everyone in government should remember it’s the Alberta taxpayer, including the farmer and rancher, who sends MLAs to the legislature in the first place.

Opinion You know pro wrestling is phony, right?

BY STU SALKELD THE PIPESTONE FLYER Being a news junky, I read a lot of different newspapers and scan lots of different websites every week. One particular set of headlines bothered me last week.

On the Yahoo Sports site the week of Feb. 22, the three top headlines were pro wrestling stories.

Near as I could tell Yahoo Sports is a legitimate

sports news site where factual information, such as final scores and injuries are supposed to be available. What’s pro wrestling doing on there?

In fairness to Yahoo Sports, they aren’t the only ones who are obviously trying to profit off the popularity of pro wrestling.

Even so, it’s very disturbing to see the number of people in the general population taking this stuff seriously. Even sportswriters who work for respected agencies treat this stuff like an actual sport, which of course it’s not. Even one of the top men in pro wrestling testified under oath pro wrestling is fixed, and nothing more than a soap opera.

The owner/operator of the world’s biggest pro wrestling organization, World Wrestling

Entertainment, stated on the record in 1989 that wrestling is fake. On Feb. 10, 1989 McMahon testified to the New Jersey Senate that pro wrestling was a scripted TV show in essence; McMahon, ever the savvy businessman, made the admission in order to dodge regulations and fees being placed on pro wrestling as a sport.

Soap operas, for example, don’t have to have mandatory steroid testing.

According to a story in TV Guide, McMahon’s wife Linda admitted in 2010 during a run for senate as a Republican that wrestling “isn’t real,” and pro wrestling is a “soap opera that entertains millions every week.”

Pro wrestling is a soap opera, and it’s a business; in fact, some critics go so far as to call it one of

the sleaziest businesses in the entertainment world.

Don’t agree with that?

On May 23, 1999 pro wrestler Owen Hart fell to his death at Kansas City’s Kemper Arena. Hart had recently taken on the identity of the “Blue Blazer,” a good-natured and bumbling super-hero character. It was later revealed Hart was supposed to be lowered from the arena’s rafters down to the wrestling ring, and when close enough was supposed to activate a “quick release” catch on the wires, dumping him in the ring. The general effect was supposed to make The Blue Blazer look like a clumsy idiot. Unfortunately, something happened when Hart was still 78 feet above the ring, and he fell free, plummeting into the ring below. Hart suffered seri-

ous internal injuries and soon after died in a nearby hospital.

To make this tragedy even worse, the World Wrestling Federation (now called World Wrestling Entertainment) didn’t even call off the show as Hart suffered injury then died. They just carried right on filming as the poor fellow lay there.

An announcer pointed out that Hart’s obvious injury “wasn’t part of any storyline.” I guess if they stopped the show they would’ve had to refund the gate, right?

Hart’s widow Martha ended up suing WWE for exploiting Hart’s name and likeness to (you guess it) make money for the business.

Apparently, WWE settled out of court with her in 2000.

Does it matter that pro

wrestling is fake? No, not at all. Everybody is entitled to the entertainment they prefer. Personally, I couldn’t care less if wrestling is phony.

The problem that concerns me, though, is when sports sites like Yahoo who call themselves legitimate news providers include television shows in their sports headlines.

When you’ve got material that’s admittedly scripted and phony, then group it in with actual athletic competition; the line between fact and fiction is blurred.

Organizations like Yahoo that do such things damage the credibility of all news providers, regardless of size or location.

Second time grooms should have bachelor parties too

BY AMELIA NAISMITH THE PIPESTONE FLYER Men (and women) should be able to enjoy a bachelor or bachelorette party even if it’s not their first trip down the aisle.

A week or two ago I was driving to work and heard over the radio two hosts debating that topic.

The male host felt there

was nothing wrong with his friend, who was getting married for the second time, wanting a bachelor party.

The female host seemed almost disgusted by the idea and said a bachelor party is just another excuse for men to party and gamble. She added if the groom wants to celebrate his love and upcoming matrimony he should just save it for the wedding, where his new blushing bride will also be.

According to Time magazine, some form of the bachelor party may date back to the fifth century and the actual term bachelor party first appeared in 1922 in Scotland.

While activities at bachelor parties may have

changed over the years it still remains a steadfast tradition of an event that occurs before a wedding.

Because of pop culture, the term bachelor party dredges up images of Las Vegas, excessive drinking, drugs, gambling and fun with exotic dancers.

But that’s not the only thing men are into. I’ve had a few friends get married over the last few years and the groom’s bachelor parties ranged from meals at mid-grade restaurants and board games to golf getaways and small house parties.

Personally, I’ve never understood why some women have such an aversion to their men stepping inside such establishments, as long as they conduct

themselves within the protocols of the location and do not behave in a manner that would be deemed inappropriate anywhere.

If women are afraid of their grooms admiring the female form don’t ever let him go to the beach or even watch Titanic.

If they’re concerned about inappropriate gambling and a lack of self-control perhaps a conversation about trust and finances should have taken place before the bachelor party stage was reached.

The same goes for excessive alcohol consumption.

But if that’s something he’s into he isn’t going to limit himself to bachelor party occasions.

And if a woman is afraid her new husband is going

to cheat on her during his bachelor party maybe they shouldn’t be getting married at all. Either he has given her a reason to be skeptical or there is a lack of trust in the relationship on her end.

That being said, Men’s Health magazine and Ontario, Canada-based clinical sexologist Dr. Carlen Costa says onethird of men cheat during bachelor parties. While the party may serve as a catalyst it’s a sign of much deeper-rooted issues.

There is nothing a groom could do at a bachelor party that he could not find the opportunity to do at another time and place.

Getting married again may bring up fears, old hurts or reservations from

a previous marriage cut short.

A night off from responsibilities full of fun and friends may be more beneficial in the long run and help the wedding day go more smoothly with less backed up emotional turmoil.

A wedding experience and preamble shouldn’t only cater to the need and desires of the bride-to-be, it’s a union of two people in balance. Why deny the groom a party if he really wants one simply because he’s not a first-timer, based on arguments circumstantial at best?

Car seat clinic soon

March is Occupant Restraints month in Alberta. March 8 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., the Leduc Municipal Integrated Traffic Unit will be holding a free child safety seat installation clinic on the fire hall side of the Protective Services Building, located at 4119 50 Street, Leduc. Certified child safety seat technicians will be on hand. This service will be provided on a first come, first served basis, and bring your child seat, vehicle owner’s manual, as well as the child seat owner’s manual.

Another workshop is scheduled April 3. In addition to these child safety seat installation clinics, this service has recently been provided to local daycare centers by Community Peace Officer Kardash, ensuring that the vehicles used to transport children are correctly outfitted with occupant restraints.

Ice Golf Tournament celebrates 20th anniversary

BY AMELIA NAISMITH THE PIPESTONE FLYER Fore! The 20th anniversary of the Pigeon Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce Ice Golf Tournament takes place March 12.

Steve Richards, chair of the Ice Golf Committee, says there are many special activities planned this year to commemorate the 20th anniversary.

Country singer Gene Gebo will serve as the entertainment and there is a $20,000 hole-in-one hole to match the year.

Richards says there will also be two bonus holes on the course with big prizes awaiting the winners. The first is the three-year lease on a Ford pickup and the other is a quad and side

Mulhurst Bay for people from all other the area to team up in their best St. Patrick’s Day dress for a day of laughs out on the ice.

“You don’t even have to golf, it’s just a day of fun,” said Richards.

“We set up a nine hold course right on the ice,” he added. The event is Texas scramble and takes about three to four hours to complete.

Following the golf it is off to the community league for the silent auction and dinner. “This is the largest fundraiser for the Pigeon Lake Chamber of Commerce,” said Richards.

There are two styles of tickets for the event, one for golf and dinner and one for just the dinner.

Medals for WCHS Sabres wrestlers SUBMITTED BY WETASKIWIN WRESTLING Congratulations to Jakob Dormaar and Kjel Gusdal for placing at the ASAA Rural Championships in Lethbridge Feb. 26 and 27.

The WCHS Grade 10 wrestlers were the only eligible Sabres team members able to compete, and coaches Shane Rybak and Shamus McDonnell were proud of their efforts.

Dormaar dominated the 68 kg weight class winning all his matches in the first round by either pin or technical superiority. Not only did he win the gold, but had the distinction of no points being scored against him.

“While Jakob is a humble athlete, his technical skills continue to earn him respect on the mat,” says coach Rybak. “Kjel is a quick learner and likes to analyze his matches like a game of chess. He earned his bronze with commit-

ment to the sport.”

Second year wrestler Gusdal placed third in the 76 kg weight class.

Both athletes are advancing to the ASAA Provincials in Edmonton March 11 and 12, which

include Edmonton and Calgary high school teams.

“Competition will be a little tougher,” says coach McDonnell, “but both young men are injury-free and are looking forward to the challenge.”

Lost and Profound’s “Goodbye Mine” is more lost than profound

BY AMELIA NAISMITH THE PIPESTONE FLYER Lost and Profound’s latest album, Goodbye Mine, is a melting pot of different genres displayed at varying levels. It is the project of two creative musicians with powerful voices yet the overall result is somewhat boring and colourless.

The album opens with Superhuman, which by itself is not a bad song.

In fact none of the songs,

when taken alone, are dreadful. But altogether they take on a shapeless, never-ending quality.

Tracks one through four all seem to follow the same whimsical, indie pop pattern. With all being soft and melodic, and without much change in tone or tempo between them, the experience quickly stales.

Finally Iodine and Jewel, the fifth and sixth tracks pick up the pace a little bit to more of a slow rock

vibe.

Portions of the instrumentals in Iodine and the accompanying singers in Jewel Harken a psychedelic 1966-1970’s Beatles and 1973 Lynyrd Skynyrd Free Bird sound. It’s known lyricist/guitarist/producer Terry Tompkins worked to bring a psychedelic component to the CD and pay tribute to some of his own influences from the ’70s.

The soft rock aura continues with Bad Sister,

the seventh song on the album, which carries on the moody ambiance that grew onward from the beginning of song one. The music now portrays more of an edge, which is an improvement from the monotony of the first four.

However, everything is still slow and dreary and the tempo of the album never really does change.

The lyrics of the songs tell stories of love and loss and are quirky, honest and insightful, which generally works well with indie pop/rock music. However, they’d be more impactful and successful if they were more enduring and present.

Alcohol, the eighth track on the album, has the perfect accompanying music,

so haunting and lonesome with that harmonica stringing its pain through the foreground. But the music overpowers the lyrics, which take a conscious effort to tune into.

The first half of the album was very indie-pop while the second half introduces a few more elements along the lines of soft rock and mysticism.

The 10th and final song of the album, Spectre, is moody, breathy and melancholy in all the right ways. Despite holding as dark of an ambiance, if not darker, as the other songs, Spectre projects an energy the other songs lack, making it by far the best Goodbye Mine has to offer.

Goodbye Mine holds an overreaching theme of loss

and the band’s signature is melancholy-infused pop rock. The duo did stick to their set theme well — and reaching that goal without falling off track and muddying the message is a feat to celebrate — but with nothing to break up the homogenization of the album everything begins to run together and and product is a long, heavy chunk of music that’s uninspiring and hard to grasp.

However, both Tompkins and lead singer Lisa Boudreau’s voices are powerful, evoking and angelic.

And completely undersold on this album where the instruments take center-stage most of the time, leaving the lyrics lost on the sidelines.

Specialty Seeding There are certain situations that require different types of seeding equipment. Specialty Seeding offers two types of seeders that can do the job when modern seeders can’t. These situations are “relay seeding” and soils that are subjected to post planting flooding.

Relay Seeding

Relay seeding offers the ability to get two crops in the same year off the same land. The first crop is a crop of silage and the second is generally another crop of forages. The second crop is seeded after the first crop. Generally when a crop of silage is grown, there are a couple of months when the land is doing nothing. Relay seeding can use this sunshine to grow another crop.

A demonstration of this seeding will take place in the spring.

Flooding Soils

Some soils in some areas receive moisture that can put a crop in a flooded situation.

If this happens when the crop is small, a loss of leaves or plant mortality may occur.

Specialty Seeding can place the seed 2 inches higher in the soil profile, thus reducing seeding injury.

Modern seeders would have the seed under the water.

SOUTH PIGEON LAKE REGIONAL WASTEWATER PROJECT AND BULK SEPTAGE LOAD FEE UPDATE The County of Wetaskiwin in collaboration with the Summer Villages of Crystal Springs, Grandview, Ma-Me-O Beach, Norris Beach, and Poplar Bay are pleased to announce that the regional line portion of the South Pigeon Lake Regional Wastewater Project has been commissioned as of February 18, 2016, which includes the new Westerose Lift and Truck Dumping Station and upgrades to the Mulhurst Bay Lagoon.

Currently, the County of Wetaskiwin is in the process of making final preparations ahead of the operational start-up of the Westerose Lift and Truck Dumping Station, which includes the training of both County staff and septage haulers on how to operate the applicable components of the Westerose Lift and Truck Dumping Station, as well as the new technologies at the Mulhurst Bay Lagoon. This training is expected to occur in the upcoming weeks with the operational start-up date of the Westerose Lift and Truck Dumping Station to be on Wednesday, March 16, 2016. Regular operational hours of the Westerose Lift and Truck Dumping Station are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week.

With the Westerose Lift and Truck Dumping Station becoming operational on Wednesday, March 16, 2016, the County will be re-implementing the thirty ($30.00) dollar Bulk Septage Load Fee to haulers for each load (full or partial) that are composed of a majority of wastewater that originates from the County of Wetaskiwin that is delivered to Westerose Lift and Truck Dumping Station and for all loads hauled to the Mulhurst Bay Lagoon that was suspended previous by County Council after being announced in December of 2015.

Wetaskiwin County bits

BY AMELIA NAISMITH THE PIPESTONE FLYER Wetaskiwin county council is using a standard letter of mandates the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation must comply with in order to keep approval from the county for it’s 2016 bikeathon around Pigeon Lake.

“One of the things they require is approval from Alberta Transportation but also the local municipalities,” said county CAO Frank Coutney.

In order for the county to give approval and allow the bikeathon to use roads within it’s jurisdiction the foundation must take safety measures such as posting proper signage to warn traffic the event is taking place.

The Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation bikeathon takes place Sept.

Federal census numbers taken as municipal census County of Wetaskiwin councillors have decided to use the federal census population numbers provided by Statistics Canada as the municipal census numbers rather than conducting another census.

The last census the county did was in 2012 and Coutney says it was compared with the federal census to see how close they were when it came to tracking growth within the county. They were within 1 per cent of each other.

“There’s no advantage to doing our own census,” said Coutney.

“They’re doing a federal census this year,” said Reeve Kathy Rooyakkers.

Coun. Garry Dearing added when the county does it’s own census it has to pay for it.

Wetaskiwin Seed and Grain Board funding request The Wetaskiwin Seed and Grain Board is receiving funds of $86,000 from Wetaskiwin County to pay off a debt to a colour sorter.

The money will be transferred from the Agricultural Service Board Operating Reserves.

The funding request first came before council Nov. 10, 2015. At the time it was noted the majority of funding comes from shares and all revenue comes from purchasing and sorting grain. Provincial grants are not available and have been an issue for the past 15 years.

County approves commerial, industrial area structure plan

BY AMELIA NAISMITH THE PIPESTONE FLYER An area structure plan submitted by Wescott Consulting Group for Simpson Park, with a maximum of 27 lots, was unanimously approved by the County of Wetaskiwin council during a Feb. 11 planning and economic development meeting.

The land in question is located half a kilometre south of Highway 13, along Range Road 240.

“We’ve received a letter from the City of Wetaskiwin supporting the area structure plan,” said assistant CAO Rod Hawken.

County approves area structure plan Continued from page 14 “Because it is adjacent and because we have a Municipal Development Plan, if council approves this area structure plan the next steps would include a public hearing for rezoning, which would be done by this council,” he added.

Following that administration would present council with a bylaw that would authorize the City of Wetaskiwin as the subdivision authority for the property.

“Administration supports the application as it’s intended to be annexed into the City of Wetaskiwin,” said Hawken.

A couple of nearby land owners had come forth with concerns, one at the meeting and one previously, that their land and quality of life would be disrupted by other landowners coming in who would be displeased with the byproducts of farming operations.

Hawken says because the property is to be developed as commercial and industrial he does not foresee that as an issue.
