These photos preserve memories for those who grew up in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows in the mid-to-late 1980s, as well as the ’90s, Patenaude said.

As well, newspapers provide “excellent portrait-style” photos of buildings, she added.

A project of this magnitude is an expensive undertaking, not only because of the man-hours required but also for materials.

“It’s gonna cost us, I figure, $30,000 and most of that is through staff time,” Patenaude said.

The goal is to purchase a quality negative scanner, some conservation-grade storage materials to hold the negatives, and most importantly, “people power” to process the prints and negatives and make them accessible to the community.

The museum is fundraising through a paypal feature on its website.

It also received a grant from the Maple Ridge Community Foundation of $1,500 “which is a start.”

“We’re looking for different grants to help,” Patenaude said.

“We need a better negative scanner, and we’ve already bought 1,000 [negative sleeves] and we’re going to need more.”

Mounties are investigating after a taxi driver was threatened in Pitt Meadows Sunday. Police were called to 191 Street and 124 Avenue about 3:20 a.m. The victim dropped off two men and a woman. One of them produced a handgun and the trio walked away.

The budget unveiled this past Tuesday by the federal government is “a great starting point,” said Pitt MeadowsMaple Ridge MP Dan Ruimy.

“The process to get to where we got to... for me, was an amazing process,” Ruimy said from Ottawa.

The process, he said, included pre-budget consultations across the country, as well as a breakfast meeting with finance minister Bill Morneau.

“Just to be a part of that process – I don’t think we’ve ever seen that before.”

When it came to community-specific concerns, “first and foremost for me, was co-op housing,” the new MP said.

“We have seven co-ops between Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows,” he furthered.

“There’s 638 families who don’t know whether they’re coming or going, or what’s going to happen to their rent subsidies; that was an issue.”

There was “wondering,” he said, “because nobody knew where the budget was going to go, and up until a couple of weeks ago, I kept hammering home to anybody that would listen, that this is something we cannot let go of.”

As such, one of the budget items this time around centres around affordable housing, “specifically proposing to re-allocate $30 million over two years, starting in 2016-17 to help federally administered social housing providers maintain rent geared to income with households living in social housing.”

POLICE FILES

Duo nabbed in dual effort A spree of robberies in Coquitlam and Maple Ridge over the past month kept Mounties busy, but all of the work has paid off now that two suspects are in custody.

Between February 27th and March 9th, a total of nine robberies with similar modus operandi were

reported to police, where a suspect would enter the business and allegedly brandish a knife to obtain money, cigarettes and lottery tickets.

The Coquitlam RCMP Robbery Section teamed up with Ridge Meadows RCMP Street Enforcement Unit to identify and arrest a

33-year-old Coquitlam man without incident.

Christopher Houghton is facing nine counts of robbery, and is currently held in custody pending his next court appearance.

Claira Dusange, a 30 year-old Surrey resident and co-accused is also facing two counts

of robbery.

BC Housing is hosting a public information session in Maple Ridge on Tuesday, March 29, to discuss the province’s plan to purchase the Quality Inn for $5.5 million, and convert the motel into 61 units of supportive housing for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

The information session will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Maple RidgeBaptist Church,

located at 22155 Lougheed Hwy. Representatives from BC Housing and RainCity Housing – the organization which will operate the proposed shelter – will be present to answer questions from community members and business owners.

The announcement from BC Housing comes a few days after Maple Ridge residents rallied outside The Pantry in protest against the province’s supportive housing proposal.

Rally attendees were protesting the size of the proposed shelter, the loss of jobs and risks to businesses in the surrounding area, the lack of a public input process, and the lack of ambulance and police

resources necessary for a shelter of such size.

During a council meeting on March 14, Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read said that Council “pushed very hard” to make sure a public consultation was held, “so our public could quickly get to a point where they felt they were being engaged, after the press release came out.”

During Saturday’s rally, Maple Ridge resident Dalene Lazarenko said that council pushing for a public consultation is necessary.

“I think that’s great,” she said. “They’re trying whatever they can do, but their hands are tied with BC Housing.” >More: mrtimes.com

Backfiring brings cops: The sound

of a truck backfiring in the neighbourhood near McIntosh Street Monday night prompted calls to police for what people thought might be the sound of gunshots. The original calls were regarding concerns that there had been firearm use, police said. Responding to the call, Mounties found a Mazda pickup, which had been reported to Surrey RCMP as stolen. The truck was seized and is being returned to the owner, police added.

Good debts versus bad

T

here is an argument to be made for running deficits sometimes, and it was one the federal Liberals made during their successful election campaign.

Originally, the budget deficits were going to be about $10 billion annually, with a return to balanced budgets within three years.

Now we’re looking at almost $30 billion in budget deficits, and no return to balance until after the next election, when the balancing job may or may not be the Liberals’ to undertake.

There is nothing wrong with good debt. When people say the government should be run like a business, or budgeted like a household, they often ignore the fact that virtually every business, large and small, carries lines of credit, loans, and other forms of debt to finance its start and expansion. Households borrow for mortgages, cars, and education.

Good debt turns to bad when it becomes unsustainable, and when it is used to finance day to day expenses that should be covered by ordinary sources of revenue. That’s as true of a family or business as anywhere else. If you’re using your line of credit for clothes and groceries and the heating bill, things are going badly wrong.

The Liberals told us that they were investing in Canada, and so they see this as good debt, as debt that will pay off in infrastructure and healthier, wealthier Canadians. Ultimately, if it works, we should see money flow back to the federal government in savings on social programs like EI, as well as increased tax revenue as Canadians find good jobs and firms grow.

It will take time to see what the return on investment will be. The world economy has been shaky (and no matter what any government says, they are not the sole cause of good or bad economic shifts in Canada) with the dollar dropping and oil scraping new lows.

Next year, and for the next few years, we will need to take another look at how this investment is paying off. If Canadians are better off economically, then it will be well spent. But the press and opposition will have to watch closely, to ensure that remains the case

hen you’re a kid, the end of the world is just plain fun.

Kids today read books about world-ending cataclysms, they watch movies and follow their favourite heroes on television (if their parents let them).

For the more educationally inclined youngsters, there are plenty of documentaries outlining a variety of mechanisms by which humanity could become toast – in many cases, literally.

And they role-play apocalypse scenarios, whether amongst themselves or via computer.

My generation played out all sorts of good-guy-bad-guy silliness, with themes covering everything from cops and robbers (with the robbers often the “good” guys) to pirates (a la Errol Flynn and his like from movies that were already old back then, and in which we all wanted to be the pirates), to war, to western gun-slinging mayhem of all sorts.

‘Homeless hotels’ turn B.C. into California Dear Editor, Having been a frequent customer of the adjacent restaurants, one thing is certain: I will not be a customer in the future should this homeless shelter go into the Quality Inn. This has been known for a while, but strangely, no public hearing has been advertised in any local paper.

There are other more suitable places available, but governments prefer to go the easy route.

No one wants his business destroyed by drug users and pushers walking around this neighbourhood.

No one forces people into drugs, these are self-inflicted

habits, and feeding them more drugs and free needles will not solve their problem.

Immigrants coming to Canada are mostly homeless until they get established. They show gratitude for this privilege and most likely become contributing citizens, and taxpayers.

How many of the homeless are capable of working and becoming self supporting?

Perhaps some one should look into these situations a little bit closer.

Taxpayers are tired of paying for people using the system as a free ride.

Why should “we the people” work and pay our share into

society and these folks feel that they are entitled to everything free?

How many seniors are in need of financial help? Are governments willing to make these people feel more comfortable?

B.C. has already accepted two homeless men from Saskatchewan.

Building more fancy “Homeless Hotels” will certainly make this province the California of Canada and attract a lot more homeless.

I think governments should listen to the taxpayers and not do what they think is correct.

Proposed sale of ‘beautiful gem’ appalling Dear Editor, I have sent the following letter to the Minister of Education (Mike Bernier), my MLA (Marc Dalton), my mayor and council and the Mission School Board.

I am absolutely shocked and appalled by the recent news of the proposal to sell Stave Falls Elementary.

This is Mission’s newest school and an absolutely beautiful building – a building that holds so much potential for my community.

Please stop the Mission School Board from committing such a crime.

Please return this land and building to its rightful owners, the community of Stave Falls.

The Mission school board has failed the residents of Stave Falls.

They over inflated enrolment numbers for Silverdale Elementary School back in 2008, so they could justify closing down Stave Falls Elementary.

Now, instead of answering for the previous board’s mistakes, they decide they are going to go behind the community and the District of Mission’s backs and sell the school.

What are they thinking?

Clearly they aren’t.

Once this community asset is sold, there will be no turning back.

If we wanted a community centre or school we would have to build one, or buy one.

Well, we already have one.

We the taxpayers have bought and paid for it and we the community of Stave Falls would like to make use of it.

I have rallied community support. We now have a community Facebook group and have reached 170 members in just two months.

We have held our first community meeting and together we will be fighting to keep our beautiful gem.

During the first semester of the school year school, District 42 teachers announced they would not be coaching sports teams, or facilitating extra-curricular activities as part of a province-wide work-to-rule campaign.

The teachers were protesting the basic freezing of teachers salaries, explained Druscilla Wilson, the president of the Maple Ridge Teacher Association.

Kathy Haynes, a frustrated Maple Ridge resident and mother, was prepared to volunteer to coach volleyball and basketball if teachers wouldn’t resume coaching. This work-to-rule campaign was one battle in a decade-long conflict between the province and teachers.

The TIMES hit the streets for the first time on May 1, with coverage of the sombre funeral for Rev. John Taylor, who was murdered inside St. George’s Anglican Church on Selkirk Avenue. Police were appealing to the public to help this solve the shooting death. This inaugural edition of The TIMES also featured a story, on the front page, of triplets Sandy, Diane, and Peggy Florence of the Katzie First Nation. Their Mother Myra Bailey spoke of how the infants were celebrating their first birthday. She also reflected back on their first year and the use of more than 5,000 diapers and the consumption of hundreds of bottles of baby formula. Since that first edition came out, The TIMES has covered thousands of stories affecting residents in this community.

The TIMES in 1990: Reflecting back on three decades of service Robson takes swing at Hartley

Merrymaker leads new council

Things got heated at Maple Ridge municipal hall, when businessman Gordy Robson took a swing at Mayor Bill Hartley in council chambers one evening in April. Robson failed to connect with the punch but the fracas highlighted the disagreements over the development of the Thomas Haney Centre, a proposal which would eventually become Thomas Haney Secondary.

The first of the Morse women, Belle Morse, took the helm of Maple Ridge council in 1990. The long-time alderwoman (15 years) and member of the Merrymakers music group vowed to have the group sing from the same song sheet in short order. She was joined on the new council by Ald. Carl Durksen (who would later go on to be mayor), as well as Ald. Jim Clements, Betty Levens, Scott Leaf, Linda King, and Jon Harris. Morse took over the position vacated by former Maple Ridge Mayor Bill Hartley, who stepped away from municipal politics, seeking to be the MLA representing the New Democrat ic Party. Meanwhile, Morse remained mayor for only one term, but her daughter Kathy followed in her Belle Morse footsteps a few years later, serving Elected mayor 1990 as mayor from 2002 to 2005.

Multi-screen cinema opens Harris Road Cinemas in Pitt Meadows opened its doors in the summer, with three screens showing the latest Hollywood blockbuster: Robocop 2. Though the theatre would eventually close, it reopened as a secondrun theatre in 2010, rebranded as the Hollywood 3 Cinemas.

Earlier that same year, Marcorp Development began construction on the $32-million Meadowvale Shopping Centre at the corner of Harris Road and Lougheed Highway. Mayor Bud Tiedeman called it the new cornerstone of Pitt Meadows.

Residents veto racetrack Had it not been for the opposition from "hundreds" of Maple Ridge residents, the construction of a racetrack in the northeast of the District might have been the year's biggest story. After stiff opposition from residents, the developers eventually brought the proposal to Mission, creating what is today known as Mission Raceway Park.

Walker wins outfield role

The pride of Maple Ridge, 23-year-old Larry Walker, earned himself a position in the major leagues in 1990, and specifically the job of starting right-fielder with the Montreal Expos. The baseball rookie was called up from Indianapolis.

After playing in Montreal for five years, he served nine years in Colorado, and a final year in St. Louis before retiring in 2005.

Whonnock jobs come and go

Duckies traverse river

The unusually strong Canadian dollar gave mill workers a cause for worry, as 60 employees at Whonnock's Pioneer Lumber mill were laid off in October, the first round of industry wide cuts.

Meanwhile, Cooper Yachts was outgrowing its location in the Maple Meadows Industrial Park, and would eventually build a large new warehouse in Whonnock.

Before the Rotary Duck Race, there was the Great Alouette Duck Race, as the inaugural rubber-duck racing event took place in September. The owner of the winning duck took home $3,000.

The TIMES in 1995: Reflecting back on three decades of service Commuter rail rolls into town

Saying hello and goodbye

It was in February when the West Coast Express officially got its name, and three stops were announced in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, much to the delight of MLA Bill Hartley. But commuters were over the moon come November, when the commuter rail finally took its inaugural run from Mission to the Waterfront Station in Vancouver. Many expressed excitement of getting out of their vehicles and forgoing gridlock nightmares.

On the political front, there were a few hellos, goodbyes, and welcome backs expressed during this year.

In January, long-time Pitt Meadows Councillor Sieb Swierstra returned to his seat after a few month absence. He collapsed the previous June, suffering from a rare respiratory virus. After seven months in hospital, he was able to return to his life and political duties. In September of 1995, Maple Ridge City hall lost its chief administrator of 19 years, Jerry Sulina. At the age of 57, Swierstra he died of lung cancer. Meanwhile, the Councillor provincial Liberal party welcomed former Maple Ridge councillor Ken Stewart into its ranks in October. While he failed in his quest for the MLA’s seat in 1996, he won the riding in the Liberal sweep of 2001, and remained until 2005, when he was defeated by NDP’s Michael Sather.

Responders busy It turned out to be a busy years for local Mounties and other emergency responders who dealt with several murders, suspected serial arsonists, bomb scares, severe floods along the Alouette River, devastating windstorms, serious accidents, and even some incidents that could be laughed about later, including a gun incident near Pitt Lake. Hugh Hoggan found himself staring down the barrel of a “big gun” after the RCMP pulled him over for what they thought was a boat theft. It turned out the boat owner’s muddy licence plate fooled the RCMP officer.

More AIDS victims feared

Douglas Fetterley was back behind bars, but not before potentially infecting a number local women with the AIDS virus. The 31-year-old HIV-positive Maple Ridge man had been in town for the better part of two years. After his arrest in March, police warned women he slept with that he was knowingly infecting people. One woman was confirmed, many others suspected.

Polder folds in with Pitt Meadows Fifteen square kilometres of land north of Pitt Meadows, known for years as the Pitt Polder, would be rolled in as part of Pitt Meadows. Both Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows were vying for the land and its taxpayers after restructuring of the Fraser Valley regional districts left the fate of the Polder in question. The province made the amalgamation announcement official in April.

‘Angel’ saves four in fire

Four Maple Ridge residents were saved by a passing bystander when their Maple Ridge house went up in flames. Sheila Howard, one of the residents, said they all probably would have died if the mystery woman hadn’t come banging at their door, breaking in the door with her shoulder and forcing the residents out.

Local business magnet Brian Coakley has his dream of constructing a bridge over the Fraser River dashed as government officials come to town buying up land for their own bridge. “It’s become abundantly clear that this government doesn’t want to deal with private enterprise,” Coakley said. The province opened Golden Ears Bridge in June 2009.

Youth centre bears his name

On May 6, the body of nine-year-old Jessica Russell of Maple Ridge was found in a burned out trailer in Deroche. The discovery came after a dayand-half long community wide search for the girl. It turned out she had been abducted on her way to school by a 20-year-old man, David Timothy Trott, who was later arrested and convicted in her abduction and death.

His defence was that he suffered from Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), bringing much national attention to the disorder during the same year that Dr. Kwadwo Asante would open an FAS family centre in Maple Ridge.

After months of rumours, Maple Ridge council announced in March of 2000 that the new youth centre in the centre of downtown Haney would bear the name of the late Greg Moore. Moore was an internationally renowned race car driver from Maple Ridge who died the year before at the age of 24, while competing in the 500-mile race at the California Speedway. Sod was turned on the new Greg Moore Youth Centre in April of 2000, and opened the following spring offering 15,000-square-feet of added recreational and educational space – a safe haven if you will – for local kids.

Curlers crowned world champs Two local curlers became world champions, after Kelley Law’s rink captured the title in Glasgow. Law was raised in Maple Ridge, while lead Diane Nelson hailed from Pitt Meadows.

Marauders win B.C. title

Shooting for Sydney gold Maple Ridge’s Kim Eagles, the sharpshooter from Maple Ridge, was Canada’s only female athlete in the sport of pistol shooting at the Sydney Olympic Games.

Eagles placed outside the medals in both the 10m event and the 25m. A big part of her efforts that year had to be spent fundraising $31,000 that she needed to make her training and trip Down Under possible.

Topless advocate wins in court Linda Meyer, a Maple Ridge human rights advocate, won an unprecedented legal battle against the District of Maple Ridge in the year 2000, as the B.C. Supreme Court ruled that the municipality lacked the authority to force women to cover their breasts in municipal property, such as public parks.

Pitt Meadows Secondary Mauraders captured the AAA senior boys’ basketball provincial championship at the PNE Agrodome, while the loyal fan base was awarded the “school spirit” award.

The TIMES in 2005: Reflecting back on three decades of service Death leads to changing laws The senseless death of Maple Ridge’s Grant De Patie, 24, in March of this year would ultimately prompt changes to provincial laws.

De Patie was working as a gas station attendee when a driver attempted a gas-and-dash for $12 in fuel. The latenight worker attempted to stop the thief. Somehow, De Patie became entangled under the vehicle as the thief was pulling away, and he was dragged seven kilometres to his death.

Darnell Pratt, 16 at the time, later pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to seven years in jail.

In the meantime, in 2008, the province instituted a law requiring people to pay for gas before pumping. In honour of De Patie, it is know as Grant’s law.

In the meantime, Maple Ridge was also rocked around the same time by the death of three people (one Maple Ridge woman and two Mission men) in an accident police blamed on street racing.

The deadly crash occurred at Lougheed Highway and Laity Street, and witnesses reported seeing two cars barrelling east at speeds of up to 140 km/h, until one car lost control, crossed the centre line, and collided with an oncoming car.

Ladd brings home Jr. gold Local hockey hero Andrew Ladd returned home to Maple Ridge in January sporting a gold medal around his neck. He helped Canada win a gold medal at the Junior World Championships in North Dakota with three goals and four assists. Since that time, Ladd has gone on to play in the NHL for the Chicago Blackhawks and Winnipeg Jets, most recently traded back to Chicago again.

New Pitt bridge announced B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell dashed in and out of Pitt Meadows in April to announce a $180-million Pitt River Bridge replacement. The bridge between Pitt Meadows and Port Coquitlam was originally built in 1956, then expanded in 1978. The new, six-lane bridge was years in the making and finally unveiled in October 2009.

A teachers strike that went on for some time in 2005, spread to Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows municipal offices and libraries in the fall of 2005 when public sector workers walked out in a show of support for B.C. Teachers Federation job action.

But there was one teacher-librarian, Marc Dalton, who didn’t support his striking coworkers, saying it wasn’t “true and right” in his heart. He claimed to have made one of the “most difficult $ decisions of his teaching career” by crossing the Marc Dalton illegal picket line set up outside Pitt Meadows Elementary in later October.

Teacher-librarian “There was name calling and basically the possibility of me being ostracized and shunned,” he explained.

Dalton would later be elected MLA for Maple Ridge-Mission in 2009, then re-elected in 2013 waving the BC Liberal party banner.

Sister avoids Pickton trial Valerie Hughes, whose sister was missing since 1998, wouldn’t attend Robert William Pickton’s trial, for she didn’t want to hear more details. Pickton was charged with the murder of 27 people, and he was in custody for three years before trial. Hughes wanted to open a treatment centre for women leaving drugs and the sex trade.

She found a place in Maple Ridge, but needed $80,000 for it.

Her wealthy Maple Ridge family allegedly ordered her killed (for $50,000 Can.) after her secret and “shameful” marriage to a poor rickshaw driver in India was discovered in 2000. The case continues today, with her uncle and mother, both of Maple Ridge, facing charges in connection with her kidnapping, torture, and throat slitting. They were order to stand trial in India, but in early 2016 it was determined they would not be extradited for fear they’d be tortured.

The accidental torchbearer

On Sept. 10, during a rave dubbed Another Night in Bangkok in Pitt Meadows, a 16-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted while a group of people watched. Photos were taken on a boy’s Blackberry phone, and distributed through text message and social media. Shortly after, three males were charged in connection to the alleged sexual assault, two for producing and distributing child pornography, and one for sexual assault.

Bob Grey walked away with much more than he ever expected when he showed up to volunteer for the Olympic torch relay as it came through Pitt Meadows in February. He was unexpectedly asked to carry the torch down Harris Road. Being a torchbearer, he said after, was a life-altering opportunity.

The event was part of a nationwide effort to build hype for the upcoming Winter Olympics held in Vancouver. Several local schools celebrated in different ways, including Blue Mountain Elementary students who held their own “closing ceremony.” And just as the Olympics wound down, Maple Ridge Secondary’s junior and senior choirs prepared for a performance at the opening of the Paralympic Winter Games.

Mom and three cubs rescued Maple Ridge conservation officers rescued a mother black bear and her three cubs from a tree in a backyard on Lee Avenue in September. Using bear bangers, ropes, tarps and tranquillizers, the bears were given one last shot at staying out of urban areas.

Kindergarten goes full day After decades of kindergarteners getting short-changed by only half-day K-school programs around the province, Education Minister Margaret MacDiarmid announced the arrival of full-day classes. Half of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows elementary schools were expected to switch to the new program in the week following the announcement, and the other half would follow the year after. Previously, only aboriginal students, students with special needs, and those who knew English as a second language qualified for full-day. MacDiarmid said the new program was expected to bring in around 20,000 full-day K-students, up from 5,000 the previous year before the initiative.

Hammond Cedar celebrates 100 Rich in history, Hammond Cedar Mill has been an integral part of Maple Ridge for 100 years. During the month of March, Peter Edwards – manager of the mill – organized a celebration, where he distributed copies of a book he wrote about the mill’s history. Of note, the mill opened in 1910 as Bailey Lumber, changed over to Port Hammond Lumber Company in 1912, and became Hammond Cedar Mill in 1916, a name – which despite several owners – has remained throughout the decades. It still operates today, and is one of the largest private employers in town. The last report in 2013 indicated there were 165 employees.

The TIMES in 2015: Reflecting back on three decades of service Tent City tensions In May, tension began between Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read and City council members, local residents, and those camped out on Cliff Avenue. The tension erupted several times, over the course of six months, in the form of a fight between two women which sent one to the hospital after her finger was bitten off, gas being dumped on areas of the homeless camp after a day of otherwise peaceful protesting, and a series of overdoses, including the deaths of two out-of-town men.

On Sept. 24, the provincially funded RainCity temporary homeless shelter opened its doors, and the tent city was dismantled in October.

A youth talent show that was introduced to Maple Ridge as a small show inside the Greg Moore Youth Centre is back in its 10th year, this time in The ACT Arts Centre.

The May 2 show coincides with Youth Week, which is May 1 to 7.

Although the show is more than a month away, auditions are being held at the South Bonson Community Centre on March 24 and 31, from to 9 p.m. both days.

Clint Gamache, youth programmer for the City of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, said the show was created to give youth 17 years old or younger an opportunity to showcase their talents.

The show, he added, “provides the youth an ability to have fun, express and show their talents, really celebrate the time for youth, and change the typical stereotypes [of youth] involved with negative behaviours.”

Easter celebrations aplenty Events take place from Whonnock to Osprey Village this weekend.

With Easter just a hop and a skip away, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are set to celebrate the long weekend, with multiple family-friendly events scheduled.

One of the biggest is the Easter Egg Hunt sponsored by Cops for Cancer at the Albion Fairgrounds on Saturday, March 26, on 23448 105 Ave. in Maple Ridge.

“Things are shaping up to be a really busy day on Saturday for Cops for Cancer,” said Const. Dayne Campbell, captain for Cops for Cancer Tour De Coast.

The second annual Easter Egg Hunt will include a visit from the Easter Bunny and Ronald McDonald, and feature free goodie bags for kids, prizes, facepainting, raffles, and the egg hunt.

This year, more than 5,000 eggs are expected to be laid around the grounds, over three times the amount from last year. Kids finding a golden egg will be awarded a prize.

Hansel and Gretel Bakery will be present with an array of sweets, as well.

“As of this week we already have a massive RSVP list that far exceeds 2014 numbers and we are expecting an even larger number of drop ins as well,” said Campbell.

“We have a ‘Police tape’ maze for the kids, darts games, a fishing game, Ping Pong ball games … Police cars on hand as well as the Vancouver Police emergency response team armored rescue vehicle will be available for kids to explore.”

Sign-ins are 10 to 11 a.m. and the egg hunt takes place at 11:15 a.m. Kids under the age of two go in for free. A minimum five dollar donation is required, with all proceeds going to Cops for Cancer.

Drop-ins are welcome.

The other major event happens Sunday at Whonnock Lake Park.

The Whonnock Community Association is hosting a ‘bring your own basket’ egg hunt with games, prizes and an appearance by the Easter Bunny. Last year saw more than 500 kids participated.

“We also have golden eggs that are turned in for large basket prizes. We usually have around 60 or 70 kids walk away with special prizes,” said Shelley Popadiuk, Whonnock Easter hunt event organizer.

All tours are high energy.

The hunt is scheduled for 1 p.m. rain or shine, and more than 400 kids are expected.

On the same day, there is the Children’s Easter Fest, scheduled to take place at Harris Road Park in Pitt Meadows from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., rain or shine, and will feature an egg hunt.

Offered in partnership with Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Parks and Leisure Services, the Easter Fest’s start times are 9 a.m. for children under 9, and 10 a.m. for those between the ages of 10 and 12.

Osprey Village’s seventh annual Spring Fling is also taking place on Sunday at Waterfront Commons Park in Pitt Meadows.

The event features face painting, egg decorating and numerous other activities.

It takes place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with an egg hunt at noon.

Finally, community members and leaders in Maple Ridge will host an Easter Egg-stravaganza on Easter Monday with an egg hunt and fundraiser for Katie’s Place at Albion Park on 102 Avenue in Maple Ridge The event runs from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Wyant winner Kids’ festival focused on fun, information KATZIE FIRST NATION

aple Ridge realtor Sandra Wyant is the latest recipient of the real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver’s (REBGV) professional excellence award, handed out earlier this month.

The award, presented at the Medallion Club’s awards dinner at the Vancouver Convention Centre, is the REBGV’s highest honour.

Wyant was nominated by her peers, and chosen by a panel of judges.

Winners are chosen only after meeting requirements of professionalism, ethics, and community involvement.

“Sandra is the epitome ERIC ZIMMER of what the professional excellence award represents,” said Darcy McLeod, REBGV president.

“Her dedication to her profession and community has made her a recognized leader.”

Grants until March 31 Maple Ridge-based Main Street Communications wants you to know the federal government has training grant funds that are available for the remainder of their fiscal year.

The B.C.-Canada Jobs Plan Funding initiative enables business owners to apply and receive a grant to cover two-thirds of the cost of training (up to a total of $15,000).

Businesses have to fund the remaining one-third but this is a huge benefit if you are looking for training for yourself and/or your staff.

This initiative goes until March 31.

Katzie First Nation’s Health and Community Building was a welcoming place Wednesday.

This welcome was for the Katzie people and surrounding communities to celebrate families and children.

Katzie hosted their first ever Children’s Festival, featuring a variety of tables set up for families to visit, as well as a facepainter, First Nations storyteller Kenthen Thomas from Secwepemc Nation, and a magician.

“The festival is to celebrate our children and to bring our service providers from Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge, and surrounding areas down to Katzie, and kind of build bridges between our programs,” explained Torrie St. Louis, manager of early childhood education and Headstart coordinator for Katzie First Nation.

The festival works in two ways, Miller explained: to give the kids a chance to have some fun on their spring break, as well as for parents to gather important information they can access to “improve the health of their children… just getting some new tools that they didn’t have before.”

Mom of two daughters, ages 25 and 13, and a 15-year-old son, Charlene Rowley designs coats and costumes at her studio inside her Maple Ridge home.

“I thought I’d have to come up with something else. I was just messin’ around and I was feeling kind of sad because I was getting broke and so I made this coat for myself, to cheer myself up.”

She posted a photo of the coat on Facebook and requests to make more started pouring in.

Now, much of Rowley’s business comes from coats she designs from bamboo material.

“They look good on every woman’s body,” Rowley said.

“I’ve probably sold, now, about a thousand of these. The coats are my money right now.

I sell them all over the world.”

Ironically, Rowley, who says

she is “totally self-taught,” hated home economics in high school.

“If somebody had said at that time that I’d be doing this for a living, I would have laughed,” Rowley said.

She said high school home ec “puts you in a box, creatively.”

“They’re teaching you the basics, I guess, but I felt that it stifled me,” Rowley continued.

“I just hated it and I never, ever would have thought I would have done it [as an occupation].”

After the birth of her oldest daughter, Rowley started making sun dresses and teaching herself how to be a designer.

“I’ve always been creative and artistic,” she remembered.

“I did make Barbie doll clothes when I was a little kid, for my dolls and stuff.”

The blooming costume design business that is Faye Tality Couture was born from owner/operator Charlene Rowley designing outfits for exotic dancers and pro wrestlers.

About 20 years ago, the married mom of three from Maple Ridge said she “kind of came into designing.”

“My friend’s roommate was an exotic dancer and she said, ‘Well, you’re creative, and you can sew, you should make costumes,’” Rowley shared.

The 49-year-old Rowley said her business grew from there; she figures she’s designed “a couple of thousand” costumes for dancers over the years.

For the most part, the dancers had an idea about their costume designs, themes, and colours and she followed their direction.

Rowley’s pro wrestler ties came through the dancers she worked with and knew. “The dancers would dance at this one bar and the bartender was a wrestler and a dancer talked to him and it kind of morphed from that,” she said.

Recently, Rowley has collaborated with local photographer Jessica Rae, combining Rowley’s costume design talents with Rae’s photography.

“We’ve been published in a few different magazines,” Rowley said.

She’s also worked with Maple Ridge’s Emerald Pig theatre group for roughly a decade.

“I love it; it’s so much fun,” Rowley said, about helping Emerald Pig. “The craziness and the lights and the show and the applause. I’ve won three best costume awards with Emerald Pig.” With a dwindling number of exotic dancing bars dotting the Lower Mainland landscape, Rowley had to branch out to survive.

“The dancing industry is dying,” Rowley said.

t took a second, maybe two, but it was a defining moment.

Oliver Vajda knelt on one knee, processing what had just transpired under the searing spotlights that burned down on him inside Langley’s Coast Hotel ballroom.

He heard the roar of the audience; in his peripheral he saw the shape of the referee looming over him.

Vajda says he was more shocked than hurt.

The night of March 13, 2015, marked the first time in Vajda’s career as both an amateur boxer and mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter that he’s ever been felled.

He hastily hopped back to his feet and stood in a corner of the ring, waiting for the mandatory standing eight count to end.

Vajda knew what was in store – his opponent, Sunshine Coast Boxing Club’s George Vourtsis, would be moving in for the kill.

What transpired after that during the co-main event of the Clash at the Cascades series, hosted by Langley City Boxing, would be all the buzz in B.C. amateur boxing circles for months to come.

A year after the epic bout, 23-year-old Vajda, the COMBSPORT B.C. welterweight

champion (147-pound weight class), held a plaque commemorating the COMBSPORT Cup Vourtsis-Van Ryan Award as Fight of the Year for 2015.

Not long after the final bell sounded a year and a bit ago, Vajda had his hand raised in victory after earning a gruelling, five-round, split decision victory over Vourtsis.

“This was my first defence [of the welterweight belt],” Vajda recalled, standing outside of his home gym, Carlson Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & MMA Academy in Maple Ridge.

“I didn’t know too much about George. My coaches had seen

him fight and told me he was a shorter, stockier opponent, and that I was going to have the reach [advantage] on him.”

Vajda’s game plan was to use his reach and boxing skills to keep proceedings from becoming a street fight.

As the match progressed, Vourtsis walked down the skilled champion and turned the bout into a brawl on a number of occasions.

Vourtsis didn’t give Vadja any breaks and quickly pressed forward. The match soon turned into the usual highlight-reel fight that has become Vourtsis’s trademark.

“For the first two rounds, I had pretty good control of the fight,” Vajda said. “I just kept him away with jabs and straight

dropped. I went in and tried to finish the fight but in the third round it was a totally different story.”

Vajda shot back up to his feet and proceeded to fend off the human buzz-saw that was Vourtsis.

“George was a madman coming at me,” Vajda said.

Vajda survived the onslaught and later on, in the final 10 seconds of the third round, Vourtsis slipped, fell back into the ropes and, like an inflatable Bop-Bag, ricocheted forward towards him.

Greg Moore’s Radio Flyer – a permanent gallery dedicated to the late Maple Ridge driver, Greg Moore – is as good as it gets in the BC Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.
