‘Paddles up’ on world stage Port Alberni pair bound for event in Australia ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

T

wo Port Alberni athletes will be among a group of close to 100 dragonboaters hoping to bring home gold for Canada at the world championships in Adelaide, South Australia next month. Maggi Slassor and Marilyn Oldfield are competing as part of the Gorging Dragon Seniors team from Victoria—one of only five teams in their age bracket nationwide to compete in the worlds. “Our team qualified in the nationals in Welland, ON, last June in order to compete in the worlds,” said Slassor. Their team is part of the Vancouver Island Paddling Club. “We train in Victoria, our boats are in

Victoria but we’ve got paddlers from as far as Port McNeill and Nelson. There’s about 10 from up-Island,” said Slassor.

MP Johns ‘concerned’ over budget The newly-released federal budget doesn’t do enough for the Alberni Valley, according to NDP MP Gord Johns. “It’s a mixed bag but I’ve got a lot of concerns,” said Johns. “The Liberals are running a $30 billion deficit. That’s an almost $100 billion deficit over three years and no plan to get us out of debt.” The Liberals had originally campaigned on a promise of three $10 billion deficits. The budget forecasts more than $100 billion in deficits for the next five years, contrary to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s election promise to balance the budget in four years. Morneau billed the budget as a plan to “revitalize the Canadian economy” and deliver a tax break to nine million taxpayers, and a more generous, tax-free child benefit. Cont’d on A7
