How to take care of your trees Pick the right time to prune Submitted

Lawns and gardens tend to draw the bulk of homeowners’ attention come spring and summer. But it’s important that property owners tend to the trees that dot their property as well. The types of trees homeowners have on their property may influence when it’s time to trim and prune the trees. Homeowners concerned about tree maintenance should speak with local landscaping professionals and tree services about caring for the trees on their specific properties, but there are a few tricks to pruning trees that homeowners should keep in mind when dusting off their gardening tools. • Prune at the right time. The Arbor Day Foundation notes that pruning during dormancy (i.e., winter) is the most common practice. Pruning in late winter, after the season’s coldest temperatures have passed, can lead to impressive and healthy growth in the spring. The ADF advises that some trees, including maple and birches, may bleed sap during pruning. But this is normal and should cease as the tree starts to bloom. Novice landscapers should confirm with landscaping professionals about the best time to prune trees on their properties to ensure they are not inadvertently harming the trees or making them more vulnerable

to fungus. • Use appropriate tools. When removing branches, use sharp tools to minimize damage to the bark. The ADF notes that young trees are best pruned with one-

hand pruning shears with curved blades. For trees with high branches, use a pole pruner or hire a professional tree service. Novices should avoid anything too risky when pruning their trees, leaving the

more difficult jobs to the professionals. • Follow the rules of pruning. When pruning trees, the ADF advises homeowners follow the one-third and a quarter rules of pruning. In adherence to these rules, no more than a quarter of a tree’s crown is removed in a single season, and main side branches are at least one-third smaller than the diameter of the trunk. When trimming deciduous trees, homeowners should never prune up from the bottom more than one-third of the tree’s total height. Finally, where possible, homeowners should aim for side branches that form angles that are one-third off vertical to form 10 o’clock or 2 o’clock angles with the trunk. • Water correctly. Like lawns and gardens, trees need water to thrive. Insufficient watering can make it hard for trees to thrive in summer, but overwatering can be harmful, too. The ADF suggests that watering each tree for 30 seconds with a steady stream of water from a garden hose equipped with a diffuser nozzle should be sufficient. Newly planted trees may need more help as they try to establish deep root systems, so consider laying mulch around newly planted trees. Mulch helps the soil retain moisture and form deeper, stronger root systems. Trees maintenance should be a priority as homeowners once again start tending to their lawns and gardens.

Reap the benefits of a well-insulated home Quality insulation can provide a number of added benefits that contributes to the comfort, safety and efficiency of a home, including:

Scott McGillivray Expert Advice

Many of us know that insulation plays a key role in keeping our homes warm in the winter and cool in the summer. But did you know the benefits can go well beyond achieving basic R-value requirements?

Sound absorbency — Life is loud, but the right choice of insulation can help reduce noise transfer throughout your home. Insulating between floors and interior walls can help create a peaceful sanctuary in areas of your home, even when life is chaotic. A safe indoor environment — Good indoor air quality goes a long way toward ensuring personal comfort. Choosing insulation that is water repellant and resistant to mold, mildew, fungi, bacte-

rial growth and rot can help to prevent common issues behind your walls that may pose serious health and safety concerns and lead to costly repairs. Look to products that will not off-gas or emit harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds). Savings — A properly insulated building will be more energy efficient, a benefit that will continue to provide return on investment long after the insulation install is complete. The result is reduced heating and cooling costs, less stress on your furnace and air conditioner (potentially leading to a longer equipment lifespan) and, at the end of day, more money in your pocket.

Fire-resistance — Certain insulations, particularly stone wool insulation products such as Roxul Comfortbatt and Safe ‘n’ Sound, can help buy valuable minutes in the event of a fire, withstanding temperatures of up to 1,177˚C. Non-combustible, this insulation exceeds the limits of most other insulating materials, and it won’t produce smoke or encourage the spread of flames. Performance — It’s important to remember that not all insulations are created equal. Some insulations can sag or contract over time, leaving gaps that can let outdoor air in and conditioned air out. Choosing insulation that is dimensionally stable, durable and that offers long-term

thermal performance will ensure your home can stand up in even the most challenging conditions. Stone wool products are proven to perform in even the most extreme conditions, making them ideal for use in the United States. Ultimately, you can purchase insulation as many do, based on basic R-values. But when it comes to quality, comfort, safety and efficiency, is basic really the best choice? Quality counts when it comes to all building materials. Always look for products that will deliver benefits well beyond the status quo. There has been a lot of talk in Penticton about the bountiful herds of deer and how unwanted they are in rose bushes, flower beds and vegetables gardens. It’s unfortunate that these lovely creatures don’t understand the amount of hard work we put into our gardens and flower beds and they nonchalantly nibble away to their hearts content. We can’t always be on point to shoo them away with our busy family and work lives, so our best defense is to take preventative measures before they begin their spring invasion. Things to think about when you’re getting ready for Spring: Plant prickly foliage at entrances or near the plants you are trying to protect to deter deer from even entering into your outdoor living space, like cleome and fuzzy lamb’s ear. Plant deer-favouring plants closest to your house or other outbuildings. You can keep a closer eye on them and they might be a little more weary and keep their fawn’s away. Plant privacy producing shrubs such as Boxwood. If they don’t see it in the first place, it has a better chance of not being their next meal. Plant strong smelling herbs such as lavender, mint, garlic or chives. Their nose will lead them to sweeter annuals elsewhere. Spray a (human & pet safe) deer repellent product such as Bobbex from the ground up and after rain-

falls. Place moving garden ornaments or automatic sprinklers amongst your precious bloom and they will frighten the already skittish deer off. These are just a few ideas to repel deer from your Okanagan garden. We carry a variety of deer resistant plants and flowers such as: Blue Star Juniper Rudbeckia Lulu Marigolds Heliotrope Blue Hawaii Ageratum Snapdragons For more information, visit the Ministry of Environments Human and Wildlife Interactions page. Come in and visit the Naramata bench in Penticton and ask the friendly staff to help you with your deer problems in Penticton.

BEV BELL Home Hardware Expert Advice

Reminiscent of catching fireflies in a jar on a summer’s eve, our outdoor chandelier sets the perfect atmosphere for an enchanted evening. What you’ll need All of these materials can be purchased at Home Hardware. For more information visit www.homehardware.ca.

Here’s How Cut a piece of jute long enough to go around the neck of the jar plus to tie a knot. Do not tie the jute around the jar neck yet. Cut four 40” pieces of jute. Fold each piece in half and tie to the neck rope with full hitch knots. Tie the neck rope around the jar, and then space the four ropes evenly around the jar. Take one rope from each adjacent pair and tie a square knot at approximately a 45° angle. Repeat step four all around the jar. Move down to create another row, repeating step 4 all around the jar.

Repeat step 6 to the bottom of the jar. At the bottom, tie ends with a square knot and then cut one string off on all four sections. Pull the remaining four ropes to the bottom of the jar, and tie together in the centre. Trim loose ends. Place the battery pack on the bottom of the jar and distribute the string of lights. A mini adhesive clip on the jar lid will help keep the lights evenly distributed and prevent the lights from falling to the bottom. Easy colour makeovers for your outdoor furniture Benjamin Moore Expert Advice

In less than a weekend, you can paint your exterior furniture in any of our thousands of colours to create an updated, fresh new look. Painting outdoor furniture pieces is an easy, fast way to transform and update the look of your deck or yard. Just follow these simple steps to achieve the best results. Surface Preparation The first step in painting outdoor furniture is to make certain that the wood is absolutely dry and free of mould and mildew. Be sure to check the undersides, too. If the old surface has mould or mildew, you can properly prepare the surface by using our premium cleaner with mildewcide, Benjamin Moore Clean (318). For mild cases, you can mix up your own so-

lution using one part of household bleach to three parts water. (It’s best to do this outdoors or in a well-ventilated area.) Be sure to completely rinse the furniture and allow it to completely dry before applying paint or stain. If the weather is cold, move the furniture indoors to dry; in milder weather, it’s enough to place the furniture in a garage, carport, or other shelter from the rain. Don’t cover the furniture with plastic or a tarp, as that will not allow enough air circulation for thorough drying. Sanding The next step is to sand the surfaces to be painted. If the old finish is in fairly good condition, it’s enough to just roughen the surface. Start with coarse-grade sandpaper, working with the grain. If you have an orbital hand sander, that is the perfect tool

for this job. If the old finish is in bad condition, you may choose to remove all the old finish down to the bare wood. This can be accomplished with a quality wood stain remover such as Benjamin Moore Remove (315). Priming If the old painted or stained surface is still intact after sanding, you can skip priming. However, if you’re going to apply a lighter colour over a dark one, if the wood is exposed, if there are knotty sections, or if any stains remain, you should use a good primer formulated for outdoor use, such as Benjamin Moore’s Fresh Start All-Purpose Acrylic Primer (023). Brush on the primer, working with the grain, using a good-quality Benjamin Moore Nylon/ Polyester brush.

Painting We recommend using Benjamin Moore’s Arborcoat Solid Deck & Siding Stain (640), which is available in any of our thousands of colours and is especially formulated to protect against weather and temperature extremes as well as UV rays. If you’ve primed the surface, one coat of stain will be enough. If you skipped the primer, you may want to apply a second coat. Let the furniture dry in a clean, dustfree, well-ventilated area. Don’t leave it outside to dry, as wind and air will deposit dust and particles onto the wet surface. Once the furniture is dry, you’re good to go. Situate your furniture where it won’t be under a drip line from a roof or tree limb. An occasional light wash with dish detergent and warm water will help you enjoy your outdoor furniture for years to come.

Freshen up your home for the spring season

Bring in

Spring

with new floors!

Submitted

After a few months of chilly temperatures, come spring, many homeowners are eager to throw open their windows and doors and breathe new life into their homes. Simple changes made now — even before the weather begins to warm up — can improve interior spaces and brighten the atmosphere of a home. • Go plant shopping. Research from NASA suggests adding at least one plant in your home per 100 square feet is efficient enough to clean air. Fresh foliage also makes a home feel warm and inviting. Watering and misting plants introduces moisture into indoor air, which can make rooms overcome with dry air from heating systems feel comfortable. Just be sure to avoid overwatering plants, which can lead to mold growth. • Swap out throw pillows. Accent pillows on beds and sofas are quick and inexpensive ways to add new bursts of color to rooms. You may be able to make over a room’s entire color scheme with new pillows. Invest in pillows that you can switch with each season so your decor will never look tired or dull. • Clean existing light fixtures. Another way to brighten the mood in a home is to periodically clean light fixtures to make sure they are working effectively. Spend time dusting them and cleaning off any accumulated debris. If need be, switch out old lamp shades for newer ones that let more light shine through. If inadequate lighting is a problem no

matter how many lamps you have, consult with an electrician about installing more overhead and accent lighting. • Give rugs and floors a deep cleaning. Recirculated air may be full of dust and other microscopic particles that end up blowing throughout your home. Also, it’s easy to track in dirt and other materials on your shoes that become imbedded in carpeting. At least once a year, rent or enlist the surfaces of carpet and upholstery cleaners to give floors a thorough cleaning. You may be surprised at how clean and fresh a home looks and smells once rugs and carpets are deep-cleaned. You also can make a dry carpet cleaner using baking soda, corn starch and desired fresh herbs for fragrance. Sprinkle and then vacuum up after a few hours. • Color-coordinate bookshelves. Group all books with similarly colored covers together for an instant and eyeappealing look. • Simmer some homemade home deodorizer. In a large pot, boil water and some scented herbs, such as rosemary, citrus rinds, vanilla, or lavender. The aroma will waft through the home, creating a pleasing scent. • Invest in new window treatments. Lightweight draperies or new blinds or shades can transform the look of a room. Be sure to keep curtains and blinds open during the day to maximize the hours of sunlight. Homeowners can make some simple changes while they’re stuck indoors and reap the benefits when the weather warms up again.

Insider tips for a sizzling barbecue season Submitted

Nothing is more disappointing than trying to grill that perfect steak when your barbecue just won’t heat up and cook the way it used to. To avoid this, the grilling experts at Broil King offer some helpful tips to get your gas barbecue ready for the season ahead.

Give your grill a good cleaning Begin by removing the cooking grids, grates and burners from your grill. Brush the inside of the oven with a sturdy bristle brush to remove the buildup of grease. Using a grill cleaner, scrub the inside and outside of the oven and then rinse with water. Never use oven cleaner

on your grill since it is corrosive and can damage the other components. Check for leaks Inspect the gas hose to make sure there aren’t any cracks or leaks. This can easily be done by preparing a soapy solution and applying it to the connections at the tank and valve. Turn the tank on

Visit our Showroom: #2-2025 Government Street, Penticton, BC

slowly and watch for bubbles to form, which indicates that there is a leak. Try tightening the connections and retest. If persistent leaking or blistering is detected, stop using your grill and replace the gas assembly. Inspect your burners Carefully inspect your burners, making sure there are no damaged ports or holes rusted through. If there are, it’s time for a replacement. Check all igniter connections to ensure they’re not loose and remove any debris from

the components.

and to help prevent rust.

Beware of spiders It’s very important to keep the burner tubes clean. Spiders love to make a nest in these tubes, creating blockages that can cause serious damage. Clean the tubes using a venturi brush or bottle brush.

Maintainance Finally, check the condition of your control knobs, thermometer and handles. Replacing small items like this can refresh your gas barbecue and make it look new again. Taking a bit of time each season to clean and inspect the gas barbecue will prolong its life and will ensure it is reliable for another great barbecue season. Read more about grilling and get some tasty recipes ideas at broilkingbbq.com.

Season your grids Check the cooking grids to make sure no welds are broken and brush off any stuck on residue. If you have cast iron cooking grids, season them with oil to keep food from sticking

Could any food be as simplistic and delicious at the same time as a patty of beef on top of a crusty bun, served with lettuce, tomato and your choice of condiments? Burgers are the go-to item for barbecues, campouts, fast-food meals, and late night trips to the diner. A juicy burger can satisfy so many cravings in one sitting. If ever there was a recipe to master, it would be grilling the perfect burger. Though barbecued burgers may seem easy to make, all too often burgers are botched by a few mistakes. But don’t worry, burger mastery is within reach if you follow these simple tips. * Begin with fresh meat. Freshly ground meat will produce the best flavour. If you are unsure when the packaged ground beef was made, ask the butcher or someone in the meat department of the supermarket to grind you up a fresh batch. Otherwise, use a food processor or an attachment on a stand mixer to grind the meat yourself. * Fat has flavour. If you’re going to indulge in a burger, make sure it has a fair amount of fat content. Fat helps keep the burgers moist and juicy. Make sure the fat content is about 18 to 20 per cent of the mix. This helps to guarantee flavourful burgers. * Keep the meat cold. Chilled burger patties will firm up and hold their shape better during cooking. Leave the pre-made patties in the refrigerator until the last minute. Keep patties on ice if you will be cooking burgers

in batches. * Don’t overhandle the meat. Compressing the meat and handling it too much can lead to dry, dense burgers. Avoid tough meat by handling it as little as possible. Keep your hands wet while shaping the patties so they’ll come together easily. * Oil up the grill. A clean, well-oiled grill prevents burgers from sticking during cooking. * Make sure the grill is super-hot. The goal is to cook burgers over high heat and fast. This is achieved with a very hot grill. It may only take three to five minutes per side to cook the burgers, depending on the thickness of the patty. * Flip only once. Wait until the burgers have been grilling for a few minutes and release easily from the grill grate. Flip them over and allow them to cook a few minutes more. This helps keep the juices inside the meat and prevents your burgers from turning into burnt hockey pucks. * Resist the urge to squash the burgers. Pushing down on the burgers with the spatula will only force the juices out. If you want dry burgers, press them down. If you want nice, juicy burgers, step away from the spatula. * Allow the burgers to rest. Take the burgers off the grill and let them rest for five minutes so that all of their juice redistributes through the patty. Toast your hamburger buns and then serve the burgers with your favourite toppings. Dig in and enjoy your efforts, as well as the compliments from other diners.

How and when to fertilize your lawn Submitted

Various components go into creating beautiful, lush lawns. Lawn maintenance involves ensuring lawns have all of the nutrients they need to thrive. Fertilizer is essential when feeding lawns, but fertilizing a lawn involves more than spreading fertilizer around the yard and hoping for the best. Fertilizing is a process that should be done carefully and timed correctly for optimal results. According to Scotts, a premier lawn seed and care company, no two lawns are alike and each lawn has different needs. The type of grass and whether a lawn is mostly in the sun or shade may dictate fertilizer requirements. While many lawns are comprised of several different grasses, a general rule of thumb is that the lawn will need to be fertilized in the spring at the very least. After that, fertilization schedules should be customized according to grass type, climate and other factors. Spring is a prime time to fertilize because the lawn is reviving after a long season of cold weather and dormancy. Come spring, lawns need to be fed to turn green and grow. Soil supplies some of the nutrients grass needs, but many soils lack elements that lawns need to survive the growing season. Lawn and garden experts say a healthy and actively growing lawn uses a great deal of energy, and fertilizer will provide the boost it requires. Fertilizer helps promote new root and leaf growth, aid in recovery from damage, reduce weeds, and replace nutrients lost to water runoff. Fertilizing the right way Follow these steps to feed the lawn and help it thrive.

• Identify the type of grass in your lawn and consult with a garden centre to find the right type of fertilizer for your grass. Many grasses are categorized by season and may be referred to as cool season, transitional or warm season grasses. • Test the soil to check for pH. You want the soil to be as close to neutral as possible so it can readily process the nutrients in the fertilizer. • Broadcast or rotary spreaders will evenly distribute fertilizer and will not cause striping on the lawn like drop spreaders might. Resist the urge to fertilize by hand, as you may lay an uneven amount of product, producing burns and brown spots. • Fertilizers come in slow-release, fast-release, and weed and feed formulations. Which fertilizer you use will depend on the type of grass you have and how much time you have to devote to lawn maintenance. Slow-release fertilizers may be preferable because they do not need to be reapplied often. • Use caution and set the spreader to distribute less product if you are unsure how much to apply. Excessive fertilizer can damage a lawn. • Water the lawn well after application, and always follow the fertilizer manufacturer’s instructions. • Keep people and pets off of the lawn for a day or two after application. • Scotts recommends that lawns with warm-season grass be fed over the summer as they grow steadily from spring to fall. • Another application of fertilizer in the fall will supply lawns with nutrients to continue to grow and then survive winter. Build a strong lawn by feeding it effectively. Dense, healthy lawns can strangle weeds and lead to beautiful landscapes.

Liquid chlorine can be cumbersome to store and splashing the product while adding it to the water can damage clothing. stabilized form of chlorine, which means it does not have a stabilizing chemical mixed with it to prevent chlorine burn-off from the sun. Depending on your needs, unstabilized chlorine can be an asset or a detriment. • Dichlor and trichlor: Dichloro-s-triazinetrione and trichloro-s-triazinetrione are two different stabilized chlorine sources. They are mixed with a substance called cyanuric acid, which helps prevent the quick usage of chlorine in outdoor pools. Sunlight can reduce the efficacy of chlorine, and this stabilizer will help buffer that effect. Since these chlorine sources typically come in pucks or tablets, they can be placed in feeders and will deliver consistent chlorine without daily maintenance. Trichlor has one of the highest levels of available chlorine of all pool sanitizers. However, one disadvantage is that if the stabilizer levels build up too much in the pool, you will require even more chlorine to combat this effect, sometimes creating a cycle of chlorine ineffectiveness. • Salt: Salt-cell pools use a process of electrolysis to extract chlorine from the salt added to the specialized equipment, thus sanitizing the pool automatically. Some people prefer salt because it seems more natural and requires less maintenance. • Bromine: Bromine is similar to chlorine. While the byproducts of chlorine do not benefit pool water, bromine byproducts can continue to sanitize the water, making it last longer than chlorine. Bromine can be more expensive than chlorine, which might deter homeowners looking for the most cost-effective pool sanitizer. Pool water chemistry can be a complex process. But homeowners have many options at their disposal when it comes time to choose the right sanitizer.
