The weed war C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
Kimberley City Council has authorized a further $15,000 to noxious weed control in the City, bringing the total spent to $30,000. Earlier this year the two companies hired to treat invasive plants in Kimberley in 2015, Maple Leaf Forestry and Mountain View Resources, submitted a report to Council which suggested the budget be raised to $60,000. At the time Kimberley Council was told that the city had the reputation of being the worst city for invasive plants in the RDEK. However, Coun. Darryl Oakley wondered if doubling the budget was the way to go. He likened it to pouring endless amounts of dollars into a sinking ship.
“To me it should be a community-wide effort in a different way. We can’t keep pumping money into this. We are not gaining against invasive weeds, we are losing.” Coun. Nigel Kitto said perhaps the city was not allocating enough, that’s why things were so bad. “It probably is a conversation we need to have with the community,” he said. “But I’m not ready to give up yet.” Coun. Kent Goodwin said that city staff was developing an approach and a plan on dealing with invasive plants. “Part of it is to identify weed free areas and protect them,” he said. “The red flag for me is that research suggests that these seeds can stay in the ground for a long time. Mother Nature is going to battle us on this thing. I think we should put the money somewhere else.”
Animal rescue organization setting up East Kootenay chapter BARRY COULTER
The regional program that helps out people affected by a disaster — East Kootenay Emergency Social Services — has a new member of the team, this one dedicated to helping our animal companions. CDART — the Canadian Disaster Animal Response Team — is in the process of establishing an East Kootenay Branch to aid disaster victims in the area. Their mission is to provide emergency services during such as wildfires, floods, severe storms, environmental disasters, or anything that requires
the evacuation of residents from their homes. “During the Rock Creek/Oliver wildfires last year, many people did not have the resources available to evacuate pets and livestock,” said Ron McCon-
nell of Wasa, one of the organizers. “Some had to simply open their barnyard gates and let the animals go, hoping they would survive on their own — many didn’t.” Largely as a result of this situation, CDART set up a chapter in the Lower Okanagan. “The East Kootenay is next.” The East Kootenay chapter will be the fourth in B.C., along with Oliver-Central Okanagan, Shuswap and Southwest B.C. Mobile support is made available to other areas that need help. See CDART, page 3

Local curling teams return from masters provincials T r e v o r C r aw l e y
It turns out that third time is not the charm for a team of local curlers. After winning the B.C. Mens Masters championship for the last two years, a local rink had their luck run out, losing to the eventual champion in the semi final matchup at a tournament in Abbostford. The team, comprised of Ralph Will, Gerry Kent, Peter Sweetman and Laddie Pavlis, curled their way through round robin with a hot start, winning their first three games before suffering a few close loses. Winning their last round-robin game put them into the playoff bracket, where they took the first qualifier, but fell in a close 7-6 score to a rink out of the host curling club led by Keith Switzer. “We got off to a good start, we won our first three games, but then we lost three close games in a row after that,” said Kent.
“Those games could’ve gone either way, but after that, we managed to get into the playoffs by winning our last game against Keith Switzer. “The semifinal was close, it went to an extra end, and Ketih Switzer made a nice rock to win.” Switzer, an old curling teammate of Kent’s many years ago in Vancouver, went on to the finals where he needed another extra end to win 8-7 to clinch the championship. “Keith has a strong team, so I think they’ll do well at the nationals,” Kent added. Kent’s team has won provincials the last two years running, and have gone on to the national championship, finishing fourth in both tournaments. “We were hoping for a threepeat, which hadn’t been done before in the men’s masters, just fell a bit short. We had good games, every game we lost was
close, so we felt that we were a contender and we enjoyed our week, apart from the losing,” Kent joked. The Will Rink opened with three wins at scores of 5-3, 6-2 and 7-1 before experiencing some tough losses. The next two matches were close, as the Will Rink fell 4-3 and 9-8, while also suffering a 10-6 loss. They won their next two games, including a match against the Switzer rink, to get into playoffs. Running alongside the men’s masters championship in Abbotsford was the women’s masters, which also featured a team from Cranbrook. However, the ladies, including Joan Fiedler, Joy Walker, Christine Knight and Ruth Persson, had a tough go, with a record of two wins and five losses. After going on a tough run of five losses, the ladies were able to finish strong by winning their final two games at 6-5 and 9-5.

Enjoy Arne Sahlen’s “If It Ain’t Baroque” show of music and mirth at Cranbrook United Church this Sunday, March 20 at 7 p.m., then at Kimberly United on Monday the 21st also at 7 p.m. Admission is by donation and food bank donations are always welcome. “Both tales about music and music itself have lighter sides,” Sahlen said. “From Bach to Elvis, my playing and stories show the fun in the often stuffy-seeming world of music. For instance, “Happy Birthday, Dear Ludwig” presents the famous birthday song - whose life-story in itself is fascinating - in a series of takeoffs on famous Beethoven works. When a furious singer threatened to jump on composer Handel’s harpsichord, he replied, “just let me know when so I can advertise. I’m sure more people will come to see you jump than to hear you sing!” Heckled during a performance, singer Al Jolson called back: “We should do a double-act. I’ll sing Swanee River and you can jump in it.” And if you’d like to talk to Sahlen after the performance about his plans for a summer piano school, he’d be more than happy to do that. Sahlen is looking to take advantage of the East Kootenay’s extraordinary well of musical expertise. “The intense voice focus in Cranbrook is rare for so small a city and Cranbrook has the largest violin club in BC! Many regional students have gone on to win awards, study at and graduate from prestigious music schools, and achieve success and distinction in professional music. Sahlen himself has 26 years experience co-directing a summer piano program in Victoria. He thinks Kimberley is ideally
Submit ted by Dori Vandaelle
placed to attract students from all over the world. He has arranged for a renowned colleague, Anthony Tam from Hong Kong, to come in August to teach some sessions. “The East Kootenay could be a destination for excellence in music study,” he said. “It’s not just conservatory or classical, but a way of studying music. The summer sessions would be an excellent way of preparing for Royal Conservatory exams because they are in August but there is also festival preparation as well. Or just come and learn.” Piano students often go on to accompany voice or instruments, and pianists and partners would benefit from special piano-training in collaborative skill and art, he says. Many pianists, singers and instrumentalists can benefit from improved sight-reading fluency and Kimberley has a huge stash of donated and gathered sheet music, ideal for intensive sight training. In addition, students will be accompanied by parents who can take advantage of all the recreation amenities available in the area. “Our EK region, so rich and reputed in arts activity, has also the natural assets and tourist services to draw families of the students, a boon to local economies,” he said. Or maybe parents want to take lessons as well. “My oldest piano student was 94,” Sahlen said. “So it is for all ages. It’s great brain training.” “Both Symphony of the Kootenays, which must bring in musicians at great cost, and the new Cranbrook orchestra could gain from added training for local and regional instrument players.” If you’d like to further discuss the idea of a music school, contact Arne at arnesahlen@hotmail.com.
CDART setting up in EK From Page 1 CDART is an all-volunteer organization, with no government funding, although when called out by Emergency Social Services (ESS), all volunteers are covered under WorkSafeBC and Provincial liability insurance. The organization founded in 2003, and since then has taken part in emergency responses on an international scale, notably in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, in Louisiana in 2005. “All species of animals were rescued — dogs, cats, reptiles, guinea pigs, birds, tropical fish, horses, donkeys …” McConnell said.
THE CDART team will be comprised of trained volunteers, who in the event of such an emergency will work with other emergency responders to rescue domestic animals like horses and cattle, and find shelter for them. Volunteers take training from Justice Institute of BC, CDART, and other agencies such as St. John Ambulance. “Our teams do not self-deploy,” McConnell said. “They must be sent in by the ESS team, usually with other responders for back-up. He aqdded that CDART volunteers also work with existing agencies in the area, such as
BCSPCA and other rescue or foster groups. Anyone interested in joining CDART as a volunteer is encouraged to contact local organizers at 250-421-2700, 250420-7221, or by email at cdarteastkootenay@ gmail.com Emergency Social Services (ESS) is a component of the Provincial Emergency Program of the B.C. ESS are those services required to preserve the well-being of people affected by an emergency or disaster. Like CDART teams, ESS teams are established in local municipalities and assemble together for meetings and contingency planning.
Spring has sprung and the Deli is done - it is time to move on to new adventures! Ruth Ramdin is retiring March 31st and closing the Downtown Deli doors after 16 remarkable years. In March of 2000, after a break from the sale of the Kalamzoo restaurant in Marysville BC, Ruth opened the Downtown Deli and Catering Company on Deer Park Avenue. Armed with her gift for creating incredible food and an idea to serve light lunches, awesome treats, and great coffee; in house and catering, Ruth began her journey on one more food adventure. For 16 years the Deli has offered, among other delicious delights, Ruth’s outstanding Creole Blackened Chicken, fluffy quiche, and her unbeatable borsch – of which she has made thousands of gallons! Countless customers have enjoyed lunches, catered meals, sweet treats, and superb coffee - all created with love, passion, and attention to detail by Ruth and long time Deli Diva Darcy Wanuk, capably served by dedicated staff members. Ruth’s offerings have always been fresh and prepared with the best ingredients. As a young, dedicated, full time working mom, Ruth kept her family organized and well prepared for hectic daily schedules. Her daughters have said of Ruth, “ … [we] remember how we ate growing up and how it formed our own love of food. How mom experimented [with food] and took

courses. When we were young, mom left notes on the table for us after school to prep things so we would always have a quality fresh meal on the table. [We remember] all the major dinners she would host at the house with fancy menus. We grew up thinking this was normal!” Ruth’s abilities were not limited to food!
Over the years, Ruth hired numerous young people whom she mentored and encouraged, many of who, because of her encouragement, moved on to higher education, other jobs specific to their interest, and marriage and family. Ruth treated staff as valued team members, central to the success of the Deli – a cheerful place with great food
and a good daily dose of humor! The afternoon of April 1st is open house at the Deli between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Be sure to come in and wish Ruth well, tell a story or two, and sign your name in her recipe book. The Deli Divas and the community will miss you Ruth. Congratulations, we wish you well. Bon Appétit!

Kimberley Arts Council awards outstanding achievements in the arts Mike Redfern
At its annual Arts & Culture Awards event on Thursday evening, March 10, Kimberley Arts Council recognized the outstanding achievement by Jim Webster and Anita Iacobucci in organizing the Symphony on the Mountain concert and gala on July 4 last year. They were presented with the Kimberley Arts Council 2015 Arts & Culture Award. In making the presentation arts council president Mike Redfern described the event as one of the most significant arts events ever held in the community. Iacobucci later noted that many people have asked her and Webster if and when another Symphony on the Mountain will take place but commented that no plans have been made for a repeat as it is all a matter of finding the money to put on such an expensive event. Also recognized by the arts council was the HomeGrown Music Society which has been presenting coffeehouse concerts at Centre 64 for 34 years. HomeGrown was awarded the 2015 Arts & Culture Business & Organization Award for its exceptional contribution to arts in the community by providing opportunities for local musicians to showcase their talents in informal, low stress public performances before receptive audiences. The award was accepted by long-time coffeehouse organizer, Carol Fergus. Carol invited other HomeGrown Music Society supporters and performers who were present to join her in accepting the award. These included Arne Sahlen, Gordie Blake, Dave Carlson, Don Davies, Craig Hillman, Lorna Locke, Terry Macham, Deb Mayer, and Suzanne McAllister. Each year Kimberley Arts Council also recognizes outstanding achievement by a pianoforte student with the Goolden Award, which includes a monetary prize. Recommended by piano teacher Arne Sahlen, this year’s recipient was 17-year-old Silas Carlson who, after just two years of piano lessons, is now playing at conservatory grade 8-9 level, which Sahlen de-

Following the award presentation, Sahlen told the audience a little about the origin of the award, made in memory of the late Mrs. Alix Goolden of Victoria, whose family originally financed the annual prize. Welcoming guests to the occasion was Councilor Sandra Roberts, representing the Mayor Don McCormick and council. Roberts stated that she has had a long and fond

association with Centre 64, having been a member of the arts council board when Centre 64 was first acquired as an arts centre after a long and colorful history from armory to pin-ball alley. She assured those present that City Council was committed to supporting the arts and the arts council to the best of its abilities. The Arts & Culture Awards event was well attended by award recipients and their friends and

Showing our Love for the City REV. YME WOENSDREGT
L
ast week, I wrote about some of the things we can learn from Good Friday. Next Friday, Christians from different churches in Cranbrook will join together for the twelfth Good Friday CrossWalk. We make a spiritual pilgrimage through the streets of downtown Cranbrook. This is worship in the streets! We pray for our city, its leaders and all who live here. We pray for our nation and for the world. The CrossWalk begins at 10 am on Good Friday at the Clock Tower. From there, we will carry a cross through the downtown core of the city and stop at several locations. At each stop, we read a passage from Scripture and we pray together. Our prayers will embrace the city and its people, leaders and governments around the world, our legal system, our health care system, caregivers of all sorts and those who need to be surrounded with prayer and compassion and grace. We pray for the victims and perpetrators of war and hatred. We pray for all whose lives need to be held up in the light of God’s love. We end with prayers for the churches and other faith groups, all who seek to live with peace and compassion in the world. We pray that we might learn to live and work together with compassion for the good of all people. Why do we do this? We do it as a faithful witness to the grace and compassion of God. We hold up our city in prayer so that God’s love might
Crosswalk, April 18, 2014 surround and embrace us all with healing grace. We journey together, bearing witness to Jesus who comes to our world with a different vision of what a whole and healthy life looks like. God’s vision for the world is of a community of compassion and companionship. It’s a world where power resides in service and self–giving love, not in might and coercion. It’s a vision of healing and restoration so that all people may live together in peace with justice. For faithful Christians, the cross is about an alternative vision of what life could be like. Jesus didn’t die on the cross primarily so that we could get to heaven. Rather, he was executed by the state because his vision of life was so radically different that he was seen as a threat. In the cross, we see the depth of Jesus’ passion for a world based on a radical equal-

ity among all people. We see the power of God’s love, which holds us up even in the midst of the most painful suffering. In our CrossWalk, in our prayers, we give voice to that vision. We don’t ask God to come crashing into our world to set everything right. Rather, as we pray, we make a fresh commitment to live by the gospel values of compassion, peace, justice and wholeness. We make a public act of witness that we walk with Jesus, that we share that same vision of a life made whole and new. Canadian theologian Douglas John Hall talks about prayer as “learning to see the world through God’s eyes.” As we pray, we learn to view the world with compassion and grace. We learn to seek justice for all people. We seek to live on this earth as responsible and faithful people who care for one another and who care for the earth as
well. CrossWalking is one way in which we renew our commitment to walk in the way of Jesus. It is a way that leads to a cross, since walking this path faithfully will bring us into conflict with the world and its values. God invites us to be partners in what John Dominic Crossan calls “God’s great cleanup of the world”. We work in partnership with God, so that the gospel values of love and compassion and justice might triumph in our own lives and in the world. God has a deep, abiding and profound love for the world. Our prayers for the city and all its people, for peace and justice, for hope and healing, reflects our longing to participate in God’s passionate love affair with the world. As we journey through the city, we feel the burden of the cross we carry. At the same time, we experience the reality of its liberating power. We renew our commitment to the crucified and risen Christ as we commit ourselves to serve Cranbrook in love. Join us on Good Friday, March 25. We begin at the Clock Tower at 10 am, and end with fellowship and refreshments at Christ Church. I invite you to journey with us. Come pray with us. Come show your love for Cranbrook. Come carry the cross with us. Come and give witness to an alternative vision of what life could be like.

Opinion/Events The Cranbrook Brewing Company JANUS: Cranbrook Then & Now
Jim Cameron
It
took the town of Cranbrook six years before the first brewery was constructed: the Cranbrook Brewing and Malting Company. Sadly, for fans of home-brew it was a short-lived affair. In business from 1904–1906, it closed due to financial difficulties, leaving Cranbrook beer drinkers to depend on numerous out of town suppliers for their suds. In April, 1912, excavation began on a two-acre site outside city limits in Slaterville for the construction of a new brewery under the management of Messrs. Andrew Mueller and Harry Hesse, both of the former Moyie Brewery. Local contractors Christian and Jones signed on for construction beginning in early May although it was to be almost a year before it was complete. Originally standing three storeys high — one of the tallest buildings in the area — it consisted of a 35-barrel-a-day-capacity brewery measuring 38 feet by 50 feet, with water supplied by a deep well on the site, an additional 30-foot by 50-foot cold storage plant, an ice house to provide cooling in hot weather and an adjoining office. The beer was flowing by the autumn of 1913. “Have you tried Cranbrook Brewery’s beer or porter yet?” asked an advertisement of the day. “It is fine. Phone 177 and we will deliver at your house.” It was business more-or-less as usual for the next 12 years. There was the odd burp now and again: A fire quickly snuffed out by alert Slaterville residents when the boiler house threw sparks into the surrounding bush and a court case in 1917 — during the four years of prohibition in British Columbia — when the alcohol content of beer was limited to 2.5 percent and the brewery was found to be producing a product of over 6 percent. The case was eventually dismissed due to insufficient evidence with a sincere promise from the brewers to never ever ever do that again, a moot point when prohibition was repealed in 1921. The brewery halted production abruptly in the early morning hours of Sunday, August 2, 1925, when Charles

The partial remains of the brewery still stand on 6th St., N. photo Cameron April, 2014. MacDonald of the CPR rail yards, the Catholic sister supervisor at the St. Eugene Hospital and the night watchman at the Sash & Door Lumber Co. in Slaterville, all phoned the telephone night operator to report that the structure was on fire. The height of the building and its position in Slaterville gave first-rate sightlines throughout the city to view the ensuing blaze, one of the most spectacular in many years. With only two fire hydrants available, one of which was malfunctioning, there was not enough pressure to successfully fight the blaze. A water pipe in the building also burst which further lessened the pressure. The fire was joined by nu-
merous explosions from the bursting of both the vats and the compressed air tanks within the building. The grass to the rear of the brewery ignited and it was generally considered a wonder that both the adjoining office and nearby houses were saved. As it was, the majority of the plant and machinery were completely destroyed. Principal owner Joseph Brault of the Canadian (now the York) Hotel, J.E. Kennedy and others faced a loss of over $35,000 dollars, with the insurance covering only a portion of that. There was much speculation that the fire was an act of arson and that a hydrant had been tampered with but noth-

ing came of it. For the fifteen men, suddenly unemployed, the only bright light once the blaze was extinguished was the possibility that the brewery might be rebuilt. In fact, a new brewery was soon under construction although this time on Joseph Prairie, immediately east of the railroad tracks and north of the city. There appears to be little on record of the construction undertaken by local contractor V. Liddicoat, save for a mention or two in council minutes as the brewery owners bargained with the city to have a water line extended to the site. The installation of the plant’s machinery began in January, 1926, with the hope that brewing might begin very shortly under the guidance of W. Schwartz, a brew master formerly of Philadelphia and recently of the Saskatchewan Brewing Company of Saskatoon. In February, 1926, Cranbrook’s city council agreed to float a loan to the Cranbrook Brewing Company in the amount of $1,200 at 6.5 percent interest in order to assist in the excavation for the new pipeline with the city “reserving the right to tap into the brewery line at any time,” by which it is understood to mean the water rather than the beer lines. The Cranbrook brewery was noticeably north of the city and alone on the prairie when completed but within a short time it was joined by the Imperial Oil Company who erected their storage tanks and warehouse immediately adjacent to the brewery and joined by North Star Oil to the north in 1932, thus helping to define the Cranbrook Street “Strip” of the future. The Cranbrook Brewing Company continued unabated through the Depression, the Second World War and into the 1950s. In 1957, the Fernie, Nelson, Trail and Cranbrook breweries amalgamated to form the Interior Brewing Company, consolidated into a single plant at Creston, the present day Columbia Brewery. The old Cranbrook Brewing Company building still stands on 6th Street, North, near the 7-11 store, its third and fourth floors, save a single south wall, torn off in the 1960s in order to facilitate removal of the tanks. It has seen use off and on over the years, generally for bottling works and recycling. Nowadays it evokes thoughts of ruin and decay, a shattered testament to the more self-sufficient communities of yore.

Zborosky chases 30 goals as Kootenay Ice close campaign Veteran forward Zak Zborosky and Kootenay Ice look to finish season on high note in home-and-home with Calgary Hitmen
Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
With two games remaining in the Western Hockey League regular season, Zak Zborosky is on a mission. The 19-year-old native of Regina has been a bright spot in what has otherwise been a trying season for the Kootenay Ice, who will miss the post-season for the first time in 18 years. Easily lost in the 12win campaign is the fact the 6-foot, 174-pound winger has posted career numbers, including 28 goals and 35 assists, to lead the club in scoring with 63 points. “It’s one of the things that gets overlooked the most,” said Luke Pierce, head coach of the Kootenay Ice, “the success that he’s had on a team that — let’s call a spade a spade — has been void of talent at times with the injuries we’ve had

and things like that. A lot of times, talent is a product of your teammates and he hasn’t had a lot of support a lot of nights. To do what he’s done is pretty remarkable and should be commended.” Closing the season with a home-and-home series against the Calgary Hitmen, Zborosky’s
mission objective is simple: hit the 30-goal plateau. “I’ve been talking about getting 30 goals since I hit the 27-goal mark,” Zborosky said with a smile Thursday afternoon prior to practice at Western Financial Place. “It’s on my mind, maybe a little too much. But I think that

Continued from page 8 That factor helped motivate the speedy winger and tasked with leading the offense of a young group, Zborosky responded. “It’s a big motivation,” Zborosky said. “Being knocked off the list and not drafted, not invited to a camp, you sort of look at yourself and realize that over the summer you’ve got to work harder and train harder. Then you’ve got to do more in games and be more productive. If you’re a skill guy, you’ve got to make those plays and score those goals.” Having seen a number of other undrafted WHL veterans sign NHL contracts in their overage year, including former teammate Jon Martin, Zborosky’s hope for a professional opportunity is still very much alive as he pens the final few scenes of the 2015-16 season and begins looking ahead to his overage campaign in 2016-17. “For Zak, to reach those types of plateaus, he has to be much more consistent within a game,” Pierce said. “I think that starts with practice, doing all the little habits right, hitting the net, stopping in front of the net, finding all those greasy things, too. “It’s been good for him to see some of these players, and a former teammate in Jon, and other guys throughout the league that people never really expected to have the type of years they’ve had. It makes it realistic. It doesn’t make it easy, but it gives you
ning these last two games — it’s fun when you win. I hope we can carry that into Friday night.” It has been easily seen that Zborosky and the Ice have been enjoying the game significantly more this past week and as far as Pierce is concerned, that’s been one of the biggest factors in sparking the success. “We’re trying to enjoy the game as much as we can and at the same time, working to get better,” Pierce said. “Third period, you get a lead, you start to change your approach a little bit where now it’s about winning and shutting them down. But we got ourselves into that situation [Tuesday against the Edmonton Oil Kings] by playing the game a little more loose, a little more free and having some fun. “I think we’ve seen some improvement and growth in the way that we’re playing and generating some offense on our own. We want to continue to enjoy it and continue to try and tweak some little things that can set us up and give us an idea what we having coming into next year.” The Kootenay Ice will hand out team awards to recognize the best and brightest from the season past, with an ice-level ceremony prior to puck drop Friday night at Western Financial Place.
Zak Zborosky hope that it can be done.” Martin, of course, signed an entry-level free agent contract with the NHL’s San Jose Sharks after stacking up career highs with the Swift Current Broncos, including 41 goals and 73 points through 68 games. Prior to that, Martin’s career bests with the Ice were no higher than 10 goals (2013-14) and 24 points (2014-15). Riding a two-game winning streak into the final weekend of the regular season, Zborosky and the Ice (1252-6-0) will look to bite to the Calgary Hitmen (40-26-2-2) one final time in 2015-16. The Hitmen visit Cranbrook’s Western Financial Place Friday night (7 p.m.) before hosting the Ice Sunday afternoon (1 p.m.) at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary. “We’re pretty confident coming in and we want to finish the year out strong,” Zborosky said. “We haven’t had the best year, but win-

Dynamiters seek stranglehold as conference final shifts to Fruitvale

Doell and the Dynamiters will look to grab a commanding series lead when the Nitehawks host Game 3 Friday night in Fruitvale. Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
The Kimberley Dynamiters spotted themselves a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven Kootenay Conference championship with a heart-stopping third period comeback in a 4-2 win Wednesday night at the Kimberley Civic Centre. That victory didn’t come easily and the next won’t be any easier as the Nitros take their KIJHL championship defense on the road to Fruitvale for Games 3 and 4 this weekend. “We can’t get too high, can’t get too low here,” said Nitros captain

Jason Richter, who scored the game-winner Wednesday night. “We haven’t been on a roadtrip with the fellas in a long time. We’re all pretty excited about it. We’re a close-knit group here. It’s exciting and we’re going to take it one game at a time.” With a 2-0 lead through 40 minutes in Wednesday’s Game 2 defeat, the Nitehawks were painfully close to evening the series 1-1. Instead, they head home looking to claw their way out of a hole. “We’ve got to play a full 60 minutes against
this team,” said Terry Jones, head coach of the Nitehawks. “I thought [Game 2] was a better effort all around. We finished a lot more checks. We wore their top players down a bit more. We’ve got to control the momentum. “I’m hopeful we can come out, establish ourselves and our gameplan, get going offensively and continue to bear down offensively. “It’s a seven-game series and we’ve got to win the next game.” In their lone trip to Beaver Valley earlier this season, the Nitros es-
caped with a 4-3 overtime victory in January. “You’ve got to simplify your game, plain and simple,” said Jerry Bancks, head coach of the Dynamiters. “Keep the puck going forward, keep chipping it out, chipping it in and go get ‘em, forecheck hard.” Game 3 is slated for 8:30 p.m. (Mountain) at the Beaver Valley Arena in Fruitvale, with Game 4 going at the same time Saturday. Should the Nitehawks claim a win on home ice, the series returns to Kimberley for Game 5 on Monday at 7 p.m.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Your essence comes out today, no matter what you do. You might feel as if your day and interactions work like a well-oiled machine. Enjoy! Remember this sense of well-being is not a daily happening. Make the most of the moment. Tonight: Respond to a touchy friend. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You might opt to change plans unexpectedly. You also might want to make an adjustment. The reason most likely surrounds finances and/or a loved one. Invest more in your domestic environment. You have higher standards than many people. Slowing down and emphasizing your statements will help define your points. Listen to what someone else says and how he or she says it. Tonight: Add more charm to the moment.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) Be aware of the costs of proceeding as you have been. Somehow, you seem to have missed a major point, which could disappoint you but also add to the moment. Your sense of well-being emerges when dealing with a child or someone you care about. Tonight: Indulge to the max. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Your smiling ways seem to throw someone off, causing him or her to misread you. Be aware of this misconception, and deal with it accordingly. Someone might think that everything between you is good, but he or she could be wrong. Tonight: Greet the weekend as you only can. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Avoid being overly sensitive about what others say. You are in a volatile situation to say the least. Don’t allow someone you care about to say too much about a situation around you. This matter is temporary and does not need attention. Tonight: Some seclusion might be nice! If you really feel that way, then this behavior is appropriate, but if you’re being manipulative, expect a backfire. Tonight: Celebrate the weekend! SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You are in control of only yourself. You might watch certain people and matters spin out of control. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You might want to reevaluate certain choices you have made and try to undo them. Others sense your remorse, so perhaps you are best off expressing it. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Perhaps you are not be aware of how strong your feelings are, as you could be suppress-
ing them. Don’t be surprised if some strange words pop out of your mouth or if you start acting different. You might want to do some reflection. Tonight: Be with a loved one. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) A friend might be pushy and even annoying. How much do you value this friendship? Take action accordingly, and know what you want to have happen. A new relationship demands your attention. Do not try to escape what is happening. Tonight: Out with a favorite person. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Tension builds when dealing with those insistent upon having their way. You can’t control anyone else’s behavior or force their hand. You can change only your own attitude. You could be making a judgment about what you should do. Tonight: Do your best to hold it together. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My husband, “Derek” and I have been married for 18 years and we have four children. Lately, I feel like a piece of meat. Derek wants sex every day and grabs my breasts constantly. If I refuse, he pouts. Derek recently lost his job and we were evicted, so we moved in with my mom. The longest Derek has ever held a job is four years. He looks for work, but then sits and plays games on the computer while my mom and I do chores and help the kids with their homework. I was raised with a strong work ethic, and have been the primary breadwinner for most of our marriage. I resent Derek for not respecting me when I say no to his constant demands for sex. Even in the midst of a kidney infection, he still wanted me to mess around. I am ready to leave him over these issues. Please help. -- Indiana Sex Object Dear Indiana: We think Derek feels inadequate as a provider, and instead of fixing that, he uses sex as a way to control the relationship and keep you in what he sees as a subservient position. But lest we be accused of practicing psychiatry without a license, we strongly urge you to get into counseling and figure this out. Derek may have adult ADD or some other problem that interferes with his ability to hold onto a job. Obviously, it would be best if Derek would go with you for counseling, but if not, go on your own. Check to see if your workplace has an employee assistance program that can help. There also are lowcost counseling options available through your clergyperson, United Way, Catholic Charities and the Department of Children and Family Services. Dear Annie: Wow, I was so surprised by your comment to “Outraged in Pennsylvania,” that her husband’s girlie calendar was none of her business. Most women I know would be upset if their husband willingly encouraged the exploitation of women by allowing this calendar to hang for all the other boys to ogle in the bathroom. This is sleazy. If a woman has any class or values, this would bother her, as it goes against everything women have been fighting for -- not to be looked at as sexual objects and to be taken seriously. It’s offensive at any workplace, whether women are present or not. If it were my husband, this would be a huge character issue. For women like you to say this is OK is shocking! -- K. Dear K.: Please read more carefully. We did not say this was OK. In fact, we agree with everything you say about it being sleazy and exploitative. Here is where we differ: She should not be telling her husband how to run his office. We would say the same if her husband objected to something at his wife’s office -- it’s none of his business. She has registered her complaint with him, but how he deals with it is entirely his decision, not hers. If she finds his response to be inadequate or offensive, and it changes how she feels about him, that is a different matter and should be taken up with the nearest marriage counselor. Cornelis Beek (“Neill,Kees) Cornelis passed away in the early hours of March 12, 2016, one month shy of his 89th birthday. He is survived and mourned by his wife of 59 years, Laura (Joyce) Beek (nee Lee); daughters Lesley (Winston) Adams of Regina Sk; Lynne (Ernie) Lalonde of West Kelowna, BC and family Kyle Lalonde (Piper) of New Westminster, BC and Danielle Lalonde (Anders) of Melbourne, Australia; and son Kees (Louanne) Beek and family Alex, Noah and Maddie, all of Cranbrook BC. Dad was predeceased by his parents and his two brothers Frans and Jacobus, both of The Hague, Netherlands. Kees Sr was born in The Hague, Netherlands, April 16, 1927. The eldest of three boys, he grew up in the family’s flower shop until the onset of WWII. After the war, he emigrated to Canada, arriving at Pier 21 in March, 1952. He worked as a farm labourer, and then as a porter in the Brandon Mental Health hospital. Dad’s life long love of singing led him to start a choir at the hospital, which was well-received by patients and staff alike. He then completed training to become a lab and X-ray technician. Dad met and married our mother, Joyce, the youngest daughter of his landlady(Elsie Lee) in Dauphin, Manitoba, Feb 9, 1957. In Dauphin, Dad participated in church choir as well as musical theatre (“Annie Get Your Gun). We moved to Yorkton, SK in 1967, where Dad pursued a career hospital administration. In1971, the family moved to Regina, where he worked until his retirement. He was very proud of the Diabetic cross-matching protocols he helped to develop.

In 1999, Mom and Dad followed their son, Kees, to Cranbrook, BC, where they set down new roots and enjoyed a warmer clime in their retirement years. The church was always very important in his life, sitting on church councils, participating in bible studies and singing in choirs. During their years in Regina, Dad very much enjoyed singing under the direction of Jack Partridge in the choir at Regina First Presbyterian. To say that Dad was definite, about almost everything, would be an understatement. He didn’t believe in grey, only black and white. Although he sought out solitude, he was always sociable and charismatic in a crowd. Everyone always remembered the tall Dutchman, who walked with purpose. Funeral service will take place Saturday March 19th, 2016,11am at Knox Presbyterian Church, 2100 - 3rd St. S. Cranbrook. The family would like to thank staff members of the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
We will invest your gift wisely. We will carry out your wishes. We will ensure your gift has lasting impact. We will honour your generosity. The loss of a loved one is a time of profound sadness. We offer our condolences. When the time is right, we would be honoured to help you to ensure the legacy of your loved one is felt in our community forever. 250.426.1119 www.cranbrookcf.ca

A icon of extreme snowmobiling was one of three people killed in separate avalanches on the same day in British Columbia. Daniel Davidoff, 45, who was known as the “Krazy Canadian” after appearing in numerous snowmobiling adventure films, died Monday in mountains near his hometown of Castlegar, in south-central B.C. Davidoff was reported missing late that night after failing to return from a planned solo snowmobiling trip, said regional coroner Larry Marzinzik. He said a search team found the man’s body on Tuesday morning near College Creek Forestry Rd., and determined he had been struck by a snowslide. The coroner said two Alberta men were identified as victims of a separate incident northeast of Kamloops on Monday afternoon, increasing the death toll to 13 from avalanches across Western Canada this season. Many people have posted online tributes to Davidoff, who is featured in a series of backcountry sledding videos called “Krazy Canadian Adventures.” A description for one film posted on YouTube invites audiences to watch as the “Krazy crew heads out in search of new terrain, over-your-head powder, huge cliff drops and nearly impossible chutes that can only be climbed with huge horsepower turbo sleds and pure adrenaline.”
The creator of a B.C. snowmobiling page on Facebook, titled “Nobody sleds alone,” posted that Davidoff’s death should be a big wake-up call. “No one should ride alone, regardless of skill or equipment. Dan was one of the best chute climbers around. Extremely knowledgeable in the backcountry and of snow conditions,” the post said. “Yet this happened. No matter how good, how prepared you are Ma Nature takes no prisoners.” Davidoff was featured in several extreme sport magazines, which tout him as the only two-time winner of the “Xtremey Award” for best performance in a snowmobile film. A 2011 interview with Davidoff in Snowest magazine says his “ridiculous hillclimbs” and countless first ascents earned him a reputation as one of the top backcountry hillclimbers. It says he swore off alcohol and drugs in his youth, allowing him to “live on a natural high.” Davidoff told the magazine he started riding about 40 years ago with his parents, who would pack him on their sled before he was two years old. Asked whether he had advice for up-and-coming hillclimbers, Davidoff suggested people “ride smart” during dangerous avalanche days. “You can always come back and slay the face another day,” he said. “But when the snow is safe and you feel it in your belly go for it. If you don’t feel it, trust your instincts. My worst failures always came when I had a bad feeling and didn’t listen to it.”
CanWel announces acquisition of Jemi Fibre The Fress Press
On Mar. 9, CanWel Building Materials and Jemi Fibre Corp. announced they have entered a “definitive agreement” in which CanWel will acquire all of the issued shares of Jemi Fibre. Jemi Fibre has roughly 136,000 acres of private timberlands, including land in the Elk Valley. Jemi Fibre’s equity value is estimated at $11 million. The purchase agreement with CanWel means that Jemi Fibre will become a subsidiary of CanWel, combining Jemi Fibre’s operations with CanWel’s platform. The acquisition includes all 136,000 acres of timberlands, harvesting operations, multiple post peeling facilities, two specialty wood treatment plants and one saw mill. The agreement will also create Canada’s only vertically integrated building materials distribution company and was unanimously approved by the board of directors of both companies. Mike Jenks, the CEO of Jemi Fibre,
entered into a long-term agreement with CanWel, and will continue to lead Jemi Fibre as a subsidiary of CanWel. “We are extremely pleased to be joining the CanWel organization to establish a more stable operating platform,” said Jenks in a press release. “Joining CanWel allows us to be part of a larger entity with deep and effective sales and distribution channels, operating expertise and a strong balance sheet. We have worked hard building a highly strategic, valuable and integrated collection of assets and look forward to continuing our company’s vision as part of CanWel.” CanWel is a Vancouver-based business, founded in 1989. It’s gained a reputation for being one of Canada’s largest distributors of building materials and renovation products. They have a number of distribution centres across the country and in the United States.
