City’s newest residents reflect on journey to Canada Syrian refugees finally feeling safe, settling into Red Deer

ven to just live your life - go outside and do everyday things - you are afraid. You’re always scared there will be a bomb or something.�

This statement was given by a newly settled Syrian refugee - a father and husband - with the help of a local interpreter with Catholic Social Services (CSS).

Anas Virkdar recently settled in Red Deer with his wife, Huda Alsayed and their three-year-old daughter Lamar and her one-year-old sister Naya.

The family had fled Syria in 2013, making their way through Lebanon, Egypt and eventually Toronto. The family is currently safe in Red Deer, and shared their story with the help of Asma Houssein, their CSS contact and translator for the interview. “I left Syria with my passport and my family - legally -and first went to Lebanon. From Lebanon, we went to Eygpt, also legally. Life was different and hard in Egypt, too. We still couldn’t feel safe there,� Virkdar said. “The situation still isn’t safe in Egypt.

There were two new presidents while we were there and both of them had different strategies for dealing with things. They also both blamed Syrians for the wars going on and around there.�

Virkdar explained that even Egyptian citizens had to be careful of thieves and violence. He also said that while he was there, he was robbed with a knife to his throat.

Virkdar and his family had heard that many Syrians were fleeing the country via the sea, but he said they were too frightened to try because of their family’s safety. “I found out how much money we needed to migrate and I didn’t have that kind of money, so when I got the call that we were coming to Canada I didn’t believe it,�

Virkdar said. “I didn’t even know how to finish working because I was so excited.�

Back home in Syria, Virkdar helped to run his father’s restaurant. At the same time, he and a friend owned a security camera installation company. He said that he realized they would have to leave and that Syria was no longer secure for his family.

They began the application process to leave Syria. The family travelled from their hometown of Damascus, Syria to the Lebanese border. Regularly, this would have been a 30 minute commute for the family but Virkdar said that due to large amounts of checkpoints, people were travelling anywhere from four to seven hours. “The thing we were most afraid of when we were leaving was the security of the road from Syria to Lebanon. overnight in a hotel. The families are flown to or driven to their new homes - in this case a flight to Calgary and short drive to Red Deer.

Members of CSS pick up the families from the airport and help them transition through hotels and paperwork before settling into a residence. Houssein, the family’s settlement counsellor and current translator, explained that CSS receives a call and prepares to welcome the families at the Calgary airport.

Houssein said her job is to communicate with the families and help them set up necessities such as bank accounts, Alberta Health Care cards and more. She and her fellow staff at the Central Alberta Refugee Effort and CSS help the refugees to figure out their budgets and to find homes that work within their parameters. “People can only see what’s in the news.

They don’t see the destruction, they don’t see the rapes or the killing of children.

The reality is 10 times worse than what’s shown on TV.�

The families will continue to work with CSS, C.A.R.E. and the Canadian governments through the next year in a process of resettlement and getting used to their new homes. kmendonsa@reddeerexpress.com

RCMP continue to search for suspects after City man killed A funeral was held yesterday in Red Deer for the young man who died while trying to stop thieves from taking his van last week.

On March 16th, at approximately 4:54 a.m., members of the Red Deer City Detachment were dispatched to a report of a man in distress in an alley in behind Nordegg Crescent.

Police located the man and he was transported to hospital for treatment where he later died.

The investigation has determined that the 23-yearold Red Deer man, Dawson (D.J.) Wegner Cramer, had attempted to stop two suspects from stealing his 2001 white Ford F650 when he was killed.

The vehicle fled the scene. Wegner Cramer’s vehicle was recovered a

short distance away in a residential area on Page Ave., however the two suspects had left the vehicle according to witnesses who saw the two men run into a wooded area.

Police have confirmed that the two scenes being investigated are connected.

Police would like to hear from anyone who may have seen a white F650 driving erratically March 16th between 4:50 a.m. and 5:50 a.m. in the area of Nordegg Crescent, Nolan Street, Page Avenue, Gaetz Avenue and 76th St. Anyone who may have a video recording of the incident, be it on a smart phone, security camera or other device, is asked to contact investigators.

The Calgary RCMP Major Crimes Unit (MCU) has assumed carriage of

this investigation and is receiving assistance from the RCMP Forensic Investigation Section (FIS) in addition to investigators from the Red Deer RCMP Detachment.

The RCMP is looking for help in solving this crime.

Provincial Transit Engagement and GreenTRIP third call announced The Alberta government took some big steps in March toward improving public transportation for Albertans across our province – and we all have a say in what the future will bring.

Alberta Transportation has recently launched a provincial engagement plan for regional transit and rural bus service. It’s my hope that everyone will weigh in with their thoughts on what transit in Alberta should look like. How could transit best serve you and your family? Regional public transit and rural bus services are part of our government’s mandate and we want to know what you think the criteria should be for these types of investments.

It’s important to understand that this province – wide conversation about transit builds on the successes and lessons learned from our government’s experience and ongoing program called the Green Transit Incentives Program (GreenTRIP). Recently, my colleague, Transportation Minister Brian Mason, announced the third call for GreenTRIP applications. Our goal with the new provincial transit strategy and funding criteria for future investment in municipal transit initiatives and rural bus service is to move beyond GreenTRIP while maintaining our commitment to public transportation in rural and urban communities. Alberta municipalities that meet the criteria will have access to $415 million to support projects such as buses, parkand-ride facilities and LRT systems. We know Albertans support our plan to enhance public transit as a safe, affordable, accessible and environmentally sustainable transportation option. Everyone needs to be able to get where they need to go. AUMA members support City’s resolution on carbon levy A resolution for advocacy on the new provincial carbon levy was unanimously supported at the Alberta Urban Municipalities (AUMA) Mayors’ Caucus earlier this month. The City of Red Deer put forward the resolution asking the AUMA Board to advocate for a revenue neutral impact on municipalities, easing the burden on taxpayers at a local level.

“The City of Red Deer continues to have concerns about the details of the carbon levy. It is not yet clear how this new tax will impact municipalities financially or how it supports climate action towards local and community environmental sustainability,” said Mayor Tara Veer. “We have asked the government for this new levy to be revenue neutral for municipalities and not impact municipal taxes. This would enable municipalities to work towards environmental sustainability and climate change mitigation and adaptation based on local priorities.”

Earlier this month, the provincial Speech from the Throne confirmed that a carbon levy, previously called a tax,

will be included in upcoming climate change legislation. The resulting revenue will be used to fund projects that reduce carbon intensity of our economy including public transit, renewable energy, and innovation.

Depending on the details of the carbon change legislation, the carbon levy could have a significant financial impact on municipalities, likely several million dollars, which may result in a tax increase of several per cent for citizens or impact the ability to finance local priorities, said Veer.

“It is critical to minimize the municipal financial impact while encouraging meaningful climate change action, efficient operations, and reduced greenhouse gases. Municipalities have a strong leadership role to play at the local level towards a sustainable future,” said Veer.

“The City of Red Deer is playing a meaningful role in local climate change through our environmental master plan and the development of a climate change mitigation strategy.”

Taking stewardship of water more seriously In our modern North American society, who doesn’t take for granted the simple turning of the tap for an abundance of fresh, clean water? But for millions around the world, this is far from the reality.

Those in the west, except for the occasional boil water alert, can’t begin to imagine the hardships that come with water scarcity, or access to only polluted water. And that’s part of the reason why every year, a day is dedicated to bolstering awareness about the challenges of managing the world’s fresh water supply.

Yesterday marked World Water Day, which is observed on March 22nd every year. Organizers describe is as a day to celebrate water. It’s also a day to make a difference for the members of the global population who suffer from water-related issues and to prepare for how we manage water in the future.

This year, a major theme of the day was about water and the world’s workers.

According to UNWater.org, today almost half of the world’s workers - 1.5 billion people - work in water-related sectors and nearly all jobs depend on water and those that ensure its safe delivery.

“Yet the millions of people who work in water are often not recognized or protected by basic labour rights. Take the example of a young girl who has to walk for hours every day to fetch water for her family.

This is a job. But it’s not paid and it’s not recognized.”

As the web site points out, if the delivery of water was ensured, this girl could be in school instead.

Water and sanitation also have a strong impact on workers’ lives and health. Two million work related deaths happen each year. Out of those, 17% are water related (poor quality drinking water, poor sanitation, poor hygiene and related lack of knowledge).

Statistics show that freshwater withdrawals have increased globally by about 1% per

year since the 1980s, mainly due to the growing demand in developing countries.

Water resources are also under pressure, with water scarcity affecting around 40% of the global population.

An estimated 663 million people lack ready access to improved sources of drinking water, according to the World Health Organization and UNICEF. Between 2011 and and 2050, the world population is expected to rise by 33%, growing from seven billion to 9.3 billion and food demand will rise by 70% in the same period.

Without improved efficiency measures, agricultural water consumption is expected to increase by about 20% globally by 2050.

There is much local residents can do as well.

We would be foolish to think that we have no responsibility to care for our water supply.

Even the seemingly simple things can make a difference, including checking your toilets and faucets for leaks. Put five or six

drops of food colouring in the toilet tank.

If, without flushing, the colour begins to appear in the toilet bowl within 30 minutes, a leak exists. Residents can replace your old toilets with low-flow toilets and receive a rebate through the City’s Toilet Rebate Program.

Also, instead of running water from the tap until it’s cold enough to drink, fill a pitcher with water and put it in the fridge for drinking.

Residents can also use a rain barrel. Save treated water by using a rain barrel to collect and store rain that can be used for lawns and landscaping. The City is offering rebates this spring to residents who purchase rain barrels. More information can be found at reddeer.ca/rainbarrels.

Market based electricity generation at risk in Alberta Unlike in many North American jurisdictions, electricity in Alberta is generated within a competitive, deregulated market – but that could be about to change.

Since 2001, new generation has been built with private capital, not public dollars, so the owners of electricity generation plants are financially at risk, not taxpayers. In recent years, Albertans have enjoyed quite low generation costs.

Now, some Albertans worry that elements of Premier Rachel Notley’s Climate Leadership Plan risk jeopardizing the principles unpinning Alberta’s deregulated electricity generation market.

The transition of Alberta’s electricity generation from a fully regulated to a market-based system began in 1996. Under the previous regulated regime, government decided when and where to build new plants and customers paid a ‘cost plus’ price.

KENNEDY-GLANS Deregulation was pursued to encourage efficiencies in the sector via a healthy infusion of competition.

Under deregulation, the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) “approves generation at the facility level, i.e. a generator must comply with regulations such as safety, environmental, design standards and public consultation.” The AUC doesn’t decide “what type of generation is built, how much generation is built, who builds generation, nor ultimately the rate of return earned by owners.”

The Alberta Electricity System Operator (AESO) plans and operates most

of Alberta’s electric system, including a competitive wholesale electricity market, but like the AUC it does not dictate if, when or where new generation will be built.

In December, the Alberta government took several strides forward in its climate strategy, introducing a consumer-based carbon tax, ambitious methane emissions reduction targets and substantial changes in the mix of electrical power generation. These policies appear to have been well received on the world stage and should go some way toward improving Alberta’s social licence to operate.

But there are two commitments in the government plan that trouble proponents of deregulated electricity generation. The first is the prescription of renewable energy targets for electricity in Alberta, with the government’s stated goal that “by 2030, renewable sources like wind and

solar will account for up to 30 per cent of electricity generation.”

The second is an artificial acceleration of the shutdown of coal-fired plants, which currently provide much of the electricity for the province. The government has stated that by the same 2030 target, “coal-fired plants will be phased out and replaced by renewable energy and natural gasfired electricity, or by using technology to produce zero pollution.”

As always, the devil is in the details.

Albertans are asking serious questions about how these undertakings will be implemented. For example, will AESO need to demonstrate that 30% of produced electricity is actually generated from renewables, or is their task to ensure that renewable sources account for 30% of generation capacity?

Because wind generally only runs 35% of the time, often

during periods of relatively low power demand and price, these two interpretations of the government’s target yield quite different answers, with significant implications for power price and reliability.

And how will AESO accomplish this while maintaining a deregulated generation system where economics are presumably the key signal for new investment by private investors?

Similarly, will the schedule for coal plant retirements be set as a gradual easing or will 2030 be the edge of a cliff? Right now, 18 coal plants operate in the province. The newest in the fleet, Keephills No. 3, was commissioned as recently as 2011 and would still be economic and compliant with current regulations as late as 2051. Albertans depends on these plants for about 65% of all of the province’s electrical generation.

The government estimates

that 12 of Alberta’s 18 coalfired plants are due to be retired without provincial intervention by 2030, leaving six plants to be retired early.

Terry Boston, a recently-retired power executive in the United States, has just been named by Notley as the coal phase-out facilitator to deal with these early plant retirements, and the direct economic and power reliability implications.

Perhaps equally important, depending on how this is accomplished, a government-driven shutdown and replacement program could easily be the death knell for future private investment in what is intended to be a deregulated market.

It may be time to re-evaluate our approach to a competitive electricity generation market in Alberta. But, if so, let’s do so intentionally.

Local parent voices concern over changes to Bill 10 I have been deeply disturbed by the recent ‘Guidelines for Best Practices’ that the NDP Minister of Education has instituted for all schools in January, 2016.

This 18-page document speaks of, “Respect,” “anti-bullying” and fostering a, “Welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environment.”

Well, I’m not sure when it suddenly became safe, caring or respectful to let any boy or full grown man go to the same bathroom or change room with our school-age daughters!

It seems almost unbelievable.

Like it’s a joke. It’s not.

In this document it states, “Selfidentification is the sole measure of of an individual’s sexual orientation, gender identity or expression.”

Forget biology.

So say if a 16-year-old boy decides one day he feels like being a girl.

He gets to see your girls in the change room. See if he can sneak a peek - maybe get a picture, maybe touch or worse.

And the law prevents anyone from stopping him.

What’s worse than this, a grown man who claims to ‘identify’ as female is welcome into the girls’ bathroom as well.

Does this not seem absurd to you?

Does the government not know that one in four girls will be sexually abused during childhood.

And that’s without gender diverse bathrooms!

All of this springs from changes to Bill 10.

This is the bill that makes every school in Alberta, regardless of their individual morals, beliefs and values, mandated to allow ‘Gay Straight Alliances’ in schools upon the request of students but it goes beyond that.

It violates charter rights and freedoms.

Bill 10 also attacks the bond between parents and their children by insisting that schools not inform parents about their own child’s ‘gender expression’ and if they are attending a G.S.A. or related activity.

Now back to the new guidelines.

Schools are to work toward single gendered sports, meetings, clubs and activities. Red Deer MLA responds to recent water damage at hospital I wish to thank those who have reached out to my constituency office of Red Deer North recently regarding the flooding mishap at Red Deer Regional Hospital on March 1st.

As a result, five operating rooms, inpatient rooms and the atrium were affected. This accident has had a huge impact on Red Deer and all of Central

Alberta. Of personal concern are the people who are impacted by delayed surgery times. We recognize the additional stress and suffering this is causing.

Returning Red Deer Regional Hospital to its functional capacity is a priority for everyone.

The government, Alberta Health Services and Red

Deer Regional Hospital are working together to ensure that Albertans are receiving the health care they require. Crews are working on the hospital around the clock, 24 hours a day and seven days a week. We recognize the importance of the health of Albertans and commit to restoring these vital services as quickly as possible. We are

hopeful that three of the five operating rooms, as well as the 12 inpatient beds will be available the second week of April. The remaining two operating rooms will be ready shortly thereafter.

Red Deer College celebrates potential for our communities The construction of the Gary W. Harris Centre for Health, Wellness & Sport is well underway.

The project is on time and on budget and will open in the fall of 2018. This will ensure Red Deer College is ready to do our part in hosting the Canada Winter Games in late February, 2019.

We are working hard already in the planning that is needed by RDC to play what will be an important role for the Games.

On March 11th, our Premier and Minister of Advanced Education attended a construction launch event at RDC to announce the Government of Alberta’s contribution of $20 million to the Gary W. Harris Centre for Health, Wellness & Sport project.

I applaud the government for their support of a project that will put 2,200 Albertans to work during the next three years. Our partners in construction are experienced, community-focused and will ensure jobs stay in our region and our province.

Community support for the project has been incredible.

The very generous gift of $5 million from Gary Harris, support from the Canada Winter Games Host Society and the City of Red Deer, as well as NOVA Chemicals, Red Deer County, Lacombe County, Hockey Alberta and others, ensures the Centre will be an iconic landmark for Central Alberta and our College.

It is rare, though, that one act of courage and commit-

ment can capture the imagination.

During the same event attended by our Premier and Minister, our RDC Students’ Association President Maryanne McGrath announced, on behalf of the students of RDC, a commitment of $500,000 donation to the project.

The announcement drew a standing ovation from the standing room only crowd at RDC’s Arts Centre.

The buzz in the room was palpable. In all my years as president, this will go down as a moment I will never forget, as it will, I think for our premier and the audience in attendance. And oh yes, Ms. McGrath made a strong, emotional plea for Polytechnic University, as well.

The need for RDC to achieve degree-granting status by becoming a polytechnic university (trades, certificates, diplomas and the added benefit of our own degrees) was heard by our premier and our minister of advanced education. Our mayor, our board chair and our Students’ Association president made it clear that this is what Central Albertans need to ensure continued economic, cultural and social growth in our region.

We are grateful to all of you for your overwhelming support of this very important next step in the evolution and growth of your College.

Greg said Lorie did her normal routine around the house that morning which included making the beds, taking the garbage out, cleaning up and doing some laundry. “When she left the home she did not take any personal effects with her - no toiletries, no extra clothes - she basically walked out the door.”

There is concern for Lorie’s well-being as she has a history of difficulties with mental health as she has struggled with depression and anxiety.

“I feel that if she’s left and it’s gone on too long she is going to express worry and shame about having left her family, even if she finds a moment of clarity, I don’t know if she is confident or comfortable with how to come home,” said Greg. “I just want her to know that what has happened and where ever she has been and whatever she has done, it just simply does not matter to us. She is a part of our family and there is nothing that we couldn’t forgive and there is nothing that we couldn’t mend or heal.”

Greg is also offering a $5,000 reward for any information that directly relates to Lorie’s whereabouts.

“There are two things to consider in my mind - I understand that Lorie left that day and I understand that she had been struggling in the week leading up to it - I could see some differences there - I could see she was in a low spot. One option that I keep going over is that she just didn’t think she could do this anymore and decided to walk away. The other thing I hate to consider is that she went for a break for one day, two days, and sought comfort or shelter with the wrong people,” said Greg. “As much as it hurts to say that, I’m very hopeful that she is well.”

As for Feb. 23rd, Greg said the day began like any other.

“On the morning of the 23rd I went to work a little earlier than I normally do.

My youngest son Seth is 17 and he goes to Hunting Hills High School. He has epilepsy and learning difficulties. Lorie and Seth are very, very, very close,” said Greg, adding the pair have been married for 25 years. “She got him up and fed him breakfast, got him off to school and then apparently she travelled east of our place to Clearview to visit a lady named Fran she had befriended who she would see on a regular basis just to make sure Fran’s spirits were up and to chat.

We spoke with Fran who said Lorie was disturbed that morning and almost couldn’t stay for whatever reason. The neighbours then saw Lorie come back to the

County helps fund grain prevention simulator

BY ERIN FAWCETT RED DEER EXPRESS Red Deer County is partnering with the Canadian Agriculture Safety Association to help sponsor the build of trailers that will be used for demonstration purposes and training first responders in how to deal with people trapped in grain.

“It’s about public education - the trailers will be at farm expeditions and safety days, but it’s also about training our first responders in rescue procedures regarding grain entrapment,” said Ric Henderson, assistant manager with Red Deer County. “This would be a brand new thing that we could train our first responders in.”

The hope is that three demonstration trailers will be built. On Tuesday, Red Deer County council approved sponsorship in the amount of $30,000 over the next three years to help

build the trailers. Each trailer costs about $100,000 to build and the projected operating cost is $75,000 annually, Henderson said.

“By contributing that amount we’ll get our name on the equipment and logo on their web site and on their media releases as a contributor,” he added. “Hopefully we’ll get better access to the trailers as well.”

In 2015, seven people died in Canada after they were trapped in grain. Three of those deaths were young sisters who lived near Withrow, Alberta. They tragically died last October.

“This is something unique.

I have known for many years the dangers of grain entrapment but there isn’t any really good training or public education to deal with that,” said Henderson.

“I’m not an expert and I hope to learn by this project, but grain traps you (if you fall into it) - you can’t stand on it and you have nothing to leverage yourself

Remembering the challenging times around Easter, 1921 Easter is a very special holiday.

It has profound religious significance.

However, unlike other holidays and commemorations, its timing changes from year to year. An ancient and complicated formula is used to determine the calendar dates. Consequently, Easter Sunday can be as early as March 22nd or as late as April 25th.

This year, Easter Sunday is on March 27th. That has only happened four times in the past century. That last happened in 2008, but prior to that, one has to go back all the way to 1921.

The year 1921 was a brutal year for Red Deer and Central Alberta.

The community was still reeling from the aftermath of the First World War. An incredible number of young men had lost their lives in that terrible conflict.

Moreover, most of those who managed to return home still suffered from wounds to their bodies and minds.

So many veterans were suffering from what was then known as ‘shell-shock’, now called Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (P.T.S.D.), that the large Alberta Ladies College building on Red Deer’s East Hill had been converted into a ‘soldiers’ san-

There was also a major push in the community to officially remember those who had lost their lives during the War. Ten days before Easter, the War Memorial Committee published a drawing by Lachlan MacLean of the cenotaph that they were recommending. While changes were later made to the exact appearance, this was the first public view of the statue of the Unknown Soldier that has become such a noted landmark on Ross Street.

Paying for the Cenotaph was going to be an enormous challenge. The economy was in a shambles. The economic mainstay of Central Alberta was agriculture.

The Red Deer merchants quickly felt the farmers’ pain.

One of Red Deer’s largest retail stores announced it was being forced into receivership. Other businessmen sold their businesses and/or buildings in hopes of getting at least some of the money back from their investments before they too faced bankruptcy.

The Piper’s Brickyard, which had been one of the big employers before the War, particularly struggled. Since the War, there had been very little construction in the community.

Virtually all of the staff had to be laid off. The owners began selling firewood to help create some income for the firm.

The local Board of Trade tried to come up with innovative ideas to boost the local economy. One idea was to get the national Air Board to establish an ‘aerodrome’ or airport at Red Deer to take an early advantage of the technological

improvements to the airplane that had occurred during the War. Other ideas involved getting the municipal, provincial and federal governments to implement public works projects. A huge challenge was that those governments faced enormous debts from the War and on-going deficits.

Hence, they felt they could not afford much in the way of new spending.

One idea which did move ahead was the construction of a new downstream bridge across the Red Deer River to provide ready access to the Joffre/Brookfield districts.

While the East Bridge was completed in 1922, the benefits of the construction and the increased trade into Red Deer were not felt until well into the future.

As Easter weekend finally arrived, the community turned its attention from all of the troubles to the annual religious ceremonies. Local churches not only held Good Friday and Easter Sunday services, but also special Easter concerts and plays as well.

Attendance was excellent as people enjoyed the ancient promise that ultimately a wonderful future lay ahead.

This year we have 64 teams of students, teachers and community members that will share riding a stationary bike for 24 hours. During the event students will participate in a variety of entertainment, interactive, and informative events, such as student performers, a magician, bouncy castle, and much more. Our overall goal for this event is to promote mental health and wellbeing. We hope to achieve this by continuing the conversations about mental health, by bringing programs to our school that promote proactive approaches to mental health, and by supporting programs in our community that assist students and families.

COURT BRIEFS MAN CHARGED WITH ROBBERIES APPEARS IN COURT A Sylvan Lake man charged with a number of robbery offenses made a brief court appearance in Red Deer on Monday.

Aaron Mays, 24, has been charged with seven counts of robbery, seven counts of wearing a disguise in the commission of an offence and two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

The robberies commenced in Sylvan Lake on Dec. 13th at the Plaza Liquor Store; then again on Dec. 27th at the Plaza Liquor Store; Dec. 29th at the CIBC and on Jan. 4th at the Lakeway Liquor store. On Jan. 5th the Lakeway Liquor store was robbed again and 16 minutes later the Plaza Liquor was robbed. On Jan. 11th the Bayshore Market was also robbed.

During his court appearance on Monday morning, defense lawyer Maurice Collard asked the matter be put over. He indicated he is in preliminary discussions regarding a resolution with the crown.

Mays will return to court March 31st. He is currently out on bail.

He has been charged with impaired driving causing death, operation of a motor vehicle while driving with a blood alcohol level over .08 causing death, impaired operation of a motor vehicle, blood alcohol exceeding .08 and driving while disqualified. He has also been charged with possession of marijuana.

Red Deer RCMP responded to a collision between a Ford 150 and a motorcycle May 20th, 2015 at 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of 19th St. and 30th Ave. Witnesses attempted to administer CPR to the driver of the motorcycle until Red Deer EMS and firefighters arrived.

Police have said the collision occurred when the truck, which was driving northbound on 30th Ave., attempted to turn left onto 19th St. and collided with the motorcycle, which was driving

south on 30th Ave. The victim was wearing a helmet. An RCMP collision analyst attended and the intersection was blocked off for almost three hours while RCMP conducted their investigation.

Connatty was arrested at the scene for impaired driving causing death and was taken into custody.

He will return to court April 4th.

MAN CHARGED WITH MURDER PLEADS NOT GUILTY A man charged with second degree murder has had a preliminary hearing set.

Shane Dion McPhee, 40, has been charged in relation to the suspicious death of a man who was dropped off at the Red Deer Regional Hospital on Feb. 13th. He has pleaded not guilty and the matter has been set for a preliminary hearing Sept. 19th-21st.

On Feb. 16th, an autopsy was held at the Calgary Medical Examiner’s Office and it was determined that his manner of death was a homicide. The deceased male was identified as 47-year-old William Blaine Baker.

ANDREW SNOW APPEARS IN COURT A Central Alberta man charged with attempted murder made another appearance in Red Deer Provincial Court this week via CCTV. Andrew Snow, 29, has been charged with attempted murder in relation to two shooting incidents near Eckville and Sylvan Lake last September. He also faces numerous other charges.

He has pleaded not guilty and will be tried in the Court of Queen’s Bench by judge alone. A preliminary inquiry will be set.

CONNATTY ORDERED TO STAND TRIAL A man charged with impaired driving causing death will stand trial. After a two day preliminary hearing held in Red Deer last week a judge determined there was enough evidence for Chad Ryan Connatty to stand trial.

POLICE BRIEFS POLICE LOOK FOR ASSISTANCE AFTER INCIDENT Red Deer RCMP were dispatched to a suspicious occurrence at the location of Nash Street of a person requiring assistance at 9:33 p.m. on March 19th. When police arrived the individuals involved in the suspicious occurrence were gone.

Red Deer RCMP is seeking the public’s assistance in order to locate the individuals involved.

At the time of the occurrence a black Hyundai Tiburon was seen in the area and may have further information and police are seeking to identify this individual.

RCMP LOOK FOR MEN AFTER ASSAULT AND ROBBERY Red Deer RCMP are looking for witnesses who can help them identify two men who assaulted and robbed a man and left him on a path near Spruce Drive on March 4th.

The victim was walking on the walking path on the east side of Spruce Drive at 1:30 p.m. on March 4th when he was approached by two men who asked him what time it was. When he stopped to check the time, they assaulted him, took his cell phone and MP3 player and left him in the snow on the side of the path. He regained consciousness a short time later and

went to the hospital, where he was treated for hypothermia and later released.

In follow-up interviews with the victim, RCMP have obtained a description of one of the two assailants as an Aboriginal man with a stocky build and shoulder length black hair. No description is available for the second suspect.

The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone who witnessed anything suspicious in the area of Spruce Drive or the adjacent walking trails during this time frame or have any information about this attack and robbery is asked to contact the Red Deer RCMP at 403343-5575.

ROBBERY SUSPECT ARRESTED Red Deer RCMP have arrested a Red Deer man for the March 13th armed robbery at the North Hill Store and the March 14th armed robbery at Express 24.

Thanks to tips from the public, RCMP soon identified the suspect and began searching for him; police located him shortly after 3 a.m. on March 17th in a vehicle in the parking lot of a Ross Street gas station and took him into custody without incident. He had also been identified as a suspect in a theft from a liquor store on March 16th after being caught on camera stealing a bottle of rye, and was further wanted on a number of unrelated warrants for offenses including assault with a weapon, sexual assault, and use of an imitation firearm.

THEFT FROM BOWER MALL Red Deer RCMP are looking for public assistance to identify two men who pried open a security gate at a store in the Bower Mall and stole five bags of merchandise last week before the mall opened.

The break and enter occurred at 8:45 a.m. on March 7th, before the stores in the mall opened. Two men entered the mall through the east entrance and proceeded to Journey Shoes, where they were able to raise the metal security gate. Inside the store, they loaded a number of backpacks with merchandise, including watches, sunglasses, hats, shoes and sweaters.

The suspects left by the same east entrance and were seen driving away in a white Chevrolet Silverado truck. The truck had a lift kit and a Calvin and Hobbes cartoon decal on it. The license plate, which was taken down by a number of helpful witnesses, was not a match to the truck.

The suspects were described as being between 5’5” and 5’8” tall; both wore black jackets or hoodies; one had white Gothic lettering on the back of his jacket, and one had facial hair.

FATAL MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION On March 7th at 4:13 p.m., Blackfalds RCMP, with the assistance of the Red Deer Collision Analyst, Emergency Services, Lacombe County Patrol and Blackfalds ITU, responded to a two vehicle fatal collision on Hwy. 815 between Hwy. 597 and Lake Sergeant Rd. A passenger vehicle was travelling southbound on Hwy. 815 and collided head on with a northbound semi truck with an unloaded trailer.

The 17-year-old female driver, and sole occupant of the car, was declared deceased on scene.

The 57-year-old male driver of the semi truck was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries and has been released.

The name of the deceased driver will not be released. The investigation into the collision is ongoing.

CHARGES LAID AFTER JEWELRY THEFT At 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 7th, 2015, $5,000 worth of gold chains were stolen from Ingham’s Jewellery on main street Innisfail. A Caucasian male, 20- 30-years-old, 5’6”, clean shaven, wearing a heavy silver chain, blue jeans, white t-shirt, dark jacket and a ball cap stole a display of chains and ran out of the store.

Innisfail RCMP have made an arrest and laid charges in relation to a theft of jewellery from a main street jewellery store in Innisfail on Oct. 7th, 2015. Robert Handy, 25, from Red Deer has been charged with theft.

Mosaics of Hope fundraiser extended at Parkland Mall

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS The Parkland Mall Mosaics of Hope event has been extended by one week.

The murals are almost complete, so shoppers are encouraged to visit the display near Guest Services, and purchase a tile for $5 to help local organizations sell the last few tiles.

Parkland Mall is matching every tile sold, so the public’s donation will be doubled, said Marketing Director Melody McKnight.

“It’s just taking a little bit longer than in other years,” she said.

Previously known as ‘Shades of Ambition’, the event provides a unique opportunity for charitable organizations in Central Alberta to raise funds for their programs. This year marks the sixth year for the fundraising event, said McKnight.

The participating charities this year are the Red Deer SPCA, Red Deer Regional Health Foundation, and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Red Deer and District.

Tiles for the SPCA are completely sold out, said McKnight. The other two organizations have yet to sell out, so shoppers are encouraged to lend their support.

“It’s the Boys and Girls Club who asked to come back for an additional week. They wanted the chance to keep promoting their services as well. So they are selling tiles for all three organizations. And even though the tiles are sold out for the SPCA, people could still make a donation if they wanted to.

“They all have programs and services that are very much needed in this economy as well.”

Participating charitable organizations each begin with a black and white mural, which have been on display in the mall.

Members of the public can then purchase a tile from any of the participating organizations for a $5 donation. Each group has 750 tiles to sell during the period.

As mentioned, for every tile sold during the event, Parkland Mall has committed to matching those donations. That means each charitable organization has the op-

RDC set to welcome Justice Murray Sinclair next week

BY KALISHA MENDONSA RED DEER EXPRESS Justice Murray Sinclair, a legend in the field of Aboriginal justice pursuits, has accepted an invitation to be the next speaker at the Perspectives Series hosted

by Red Deer College.

Sinclair was recently appointed the Canadian Senator for Manitoba, after successfully chairing the Indian Residential Schools Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).

Sinclair will visit RDC on March 30th at 7:30 p.m. for the public session. Tickets are available online at the Black Knight Inn Ticket Centre for $25.

“We definitely have the hope that Murray Sinclair will have a great impact on the students.

Immediately, we hope that students can connect some of his messages with their current studies and work as students,” said Dr. Krista Robson, of the Perspectives Committee at RDC. “In the longer term, we have the hope - and I think a realistic hope - that students will want to learn more about the TRC, about this part of Canadian history and to hopefully find a place for themselves in the reconciliation process yet to come.”

The TRC began several years ago and has recently released the official findings, calls to ac-

tion and research undertaken by the commission. The importance of this work can be seen across the country as it affects every community, either Aboriginal or not, officials have said.

Robson said she feels that Sinclair’s visit will be particularly impactful, as there are many students studying at RDC who will go on to work with Aboriginal communities.

“Our students are bound for careers and professions that impact Aboriginal communities and cultures - they’re heading for health care, social services, government education and so on,” Robson said.

“The TRC calls for action highlight the crucial role of education for all Canadians, but specifically in these exact fields. It’s very clear, given these calls to action, that our students and education need to incorporate the history, knowledge and impact of the residential school system.”

Robson said the mandate of the Perspective Series is to bring vital, timely and impactful speakers to Central Alberta and to help the students and community connect to large ideas. She said the Perspectives Committee seeks out Canadians who are able to speak to profound issues that are affecting the every day lives of the students and residents of the City.

“In a way, we are following a previous Perspectives speaker that we had - Phil Fontaine. He was here in 2010. As the former National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations, Fontaine came and spoke specifically to his own

experiences with the residential school system, and that was at the beginning of the TRC process,” Robson explained.

NEW WATER QUALITY PLAN The Red Deer River Watershed Alliance (RDRWA) is pleased to announce the release of a new plan to protect water quality in the Red Deer River watershed.

Several years in the making, Blueprint: An Integrated Watershed Management Plan for the Red Deer River Watershed (Phase One: Water Quality) is a decision-support tool for people to use as they work together to protect water quality. The plan presents goals, targets, and recommendations to maintain and improve surface water and groundwater quality.

The plan was released on World Water Day, an international event held annually on March 22nd to draw attention to the importance of freshwater. This year’s theme is ‘Water and Jobs’, recognizing that almost half of the world’s workers – 1.5 billion people – work in water related sectors. In Alberta, water is one of the key drivers of the economy.

Blueprint is the product of extensive community engagement and research over several years. The plan addresses various water bodies – the Red Deer River, its tributaries, local lakes, and even groundwater with recommendations that span subjects including lake management, groundwater monitoring and mapping, and water literacy (among others) are also presented.

People who would like to become more involved in watershed management and Blueprint’s implementation are asked to contact the Red Deer River Watershed Alliance. In parallel to the launch of Blueprint, the RDRWA is also leading Alberta’s first “social innovation lab” looking at water challenges.

RDC STUDENTS ELECT EXECUTIVE Students at Red Deer College elected the 2016-2017 Students’ Association executive March 15th and 16th in its annual spring general election.

EROSION PROTECTION STARTING ALONG RIVER BANK Erosion protection work along the south bank of the Red Deer River between Heritage Ranch and Riverview Park is underway.

This project involves placing rip-rap (large rock) along the eroded bank to increase stability and to protect against further erosion. The rip-rap is currently stock piled in a parking lot in Great Chief Park and crews will be constructing a river crossing from Little Chief Park to access the south bank of the Red Deer River where the erosion protection work is required.

The Erosion Protection Project will continue until mid-May. During this time, the west parking lot at Great Chief Park and the parking lot near the boat launch in Little Chief Park will be closed.

Parking is still available in Great Chief Park. Flag people will be on Fountain Drive directing single lane alternating traffic as Fountain Drive and people accessing amenities off Fountain Drive are asked to allow for an extra couple of minutes as there will be short delays.

ENTERTAINMENT Marianas Trench brings current tour to Red Deer

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Marianas Trench brings their ‘Never Say Die’ tour to Red Deer March 30th at the Enmax Centrium.

These are also exciting days as they’ve been nominated for the ‘Group of the Year’ award at this year’s Juno Awards, slated to be aired in early April.

Meanwhile, they are relishing their time on the road - connecting with fans and spreading the polished, tremendously-crafted tunes of their latest CD - Astoria - which was released last fall.

“It was a long process, but once the recording process really took off it really gelled. It was a great experience and it worked out really well organically,” said drummer Ian Casselman. “It was a lot of work but it happened naturally which is always nice when that does happen - we weren’t having to force anything.”

Over the course of their career, the pop-rock quartet have had several videos reach number one on the MuchMusic Top 30 Countdown which garnered multiple JUNO, MMVA and SOCAN award wins and nominations.

Since their 2006 debut, Fix Me, the Vancouver-based four piece have also had two certified platinum-selling records (Masterpiece Theatre, Ever After) and chart-topping hits including Fallout, Haven’t Had Enough, and Stutter garnered multiple SOCAN and MMVA Awards, number one videos on Much Music.

Meanwhile, when lead singer Josh Ramsay came up with the title Astoria for the band’s last CD, he saw the album as a concept record based on 1980s fantasy adventure films, specifically The Goonies. The idea was to let a classic coming of age movie inspire the feel of the record.

Casselman said the attention to building that 80s sound was precise and purposeful.

“We did our best to try and use gear that was available during the 80s or before,” he said, adding he purchased a drum set from the

60s all in an effort to add to that sense of authenticity.

“A lot of the guitars, guitar amps, basses and keyboards that we used were all from the 80s or prior to that, too. The gear that we recorded on also was from the 80s.” The drums were recorded in a separate studio (everything else was recorded in lead singer Josh Ramsay’s apartment studio) and were also specially styled to resemble that unique 80s sound as well.

“It made them sound more like a record than a CD,” he explained.

“They’re a little bit warmer and it’s a bit of a different sound sonically.

“We were never trying to copy we were using the 80s to inspire us. But if there was a cool sound, we would try and recreate it.”

The whole concept was indeed a refreshing adventure for the band, he added, pointing out that

Ramsay even decorated the recording space with 1980s movie posters and album jackets.

“He said, ‘I’m going to show up everyday in leather pants,” said guitarist Matt Webb. “So we tightened up our pants, threw tank tops on and pretended we were eighties rock and roll stars.”

Rounding out the band is bassist Mike Ayley.

“When you first release an album, a lot of fans want it to be the same as before,” noted Casselman. “They may have fallen in love with a previous album so they want it to be the same. But maybe in the big picture, they don’t realize at the time that they might get bored of the new album pretty quick.

“When we released this album, it took me a week before I saw a negative comment about it on

social media,” he said.

“I took that as a really, really good sign.” The CD was self-produced but the guys brought a few experts on board in the collaboration as well - such as Mike Fraser and Dave Ogilvie who Casselman describes as a fantastic mixer.

“I think that’s why it turned out like it did and why the sound is good, because we were allowed to do it ourselves and chase it, but also there’s been an insane amount of work that’s gone into honing those skills.”

Meanwhile, Casselman recalls the start of his own fascination with the drums.

“My story is that I was about four and I was at a wedding with my parents, and there was a live band there,” he explained. “Supposedly, I was just enamored with the drummer,” he laughed.

“My mom took me to meet him afterwards.”

The musician had him down at the drum set. “Whatever happened, he said to my my mom, ‘You should get this kid lessons when he’s older - there is something going on there.’ He gave me a pair of sticks, and the rest is history.”

He eventually joined a pipe band which solidified his skills that much further. “When it came time for high school, I was in every musical ensemble - all the choirs and vocal jazz groups - whatever I could get my hands on, ” said Casselman, who also sings backup for Marianas Trench.

He initially studied landscape architecture but music wielded an irresistible attraction. Eventually he put an ad in the paper in hopes of landing a spot in a local band.

Ramsay called him up and the rest is history.

Meanwhile, these days, the band is closer than ever, added Ramsay.

“I feel like this is our best moment, For me, Astoria is the record of my career so far - at least until we start the next one and I go crazy again.”

Blues king Harp Dog Brown coming to Fratters

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Blues master Harpdog Brown & the Travelin’ Blues Show makes a City stop at Fratters on March 30th.

Showtime is at 8:30 p.m.

Having been in the biz for more than 30 years, Brown has shared the stage with such greats as Matt ‘Guitar’ Murphy, Pinetop Perkins, The Powder Blues Band, Jack de Keyzer and the late Dutch Mason to name a few.

These days, he’s particularly excited as he’s just returned from recording sessions in California for a new project, set for release later this spring. “The release date will be as soon as possible,” he says during a chat from his Vancouver home.

Recording took place utilizing equipment from earlier eras - what would have been cutting edge in the mid-50s in some cases - to help capture that sizzling early electric Chicago blues sound.

“All I was prepared to do was to perform the best that I could,” he explains of prepping for the sessions. “I also wanted to record what we are doing with the Travelin’ Blues Show.”

Producer Little Victor worked with Brown on the tracks. “They have all the gear, they do it in one room ‘live’ off the floor like they did back in ‘54,” he said. “I didn’t have any headphones or monitors I just did the old routine of using my hand over my ear to hear myself,” he explained.

“The sound is remarkably like it came

out of the past. It’s very cool. There’s also some news songs, and some new takes on old songs in an older, cooler greasier kind of way. So we are excited about it.”

His last CD, 2014’s What It Is - was placed at number 20 by Roots Music Report in their worldwide Top Blues Albums that same year. Last year, Brown & the Travelin’ Blues Show also landed a whirlwind cross-Canada tour with Little Victor.

He also won Harmonica Player of the Year from the Toronto Blues Society and their Maple Blues Awards last year and in 2014.

As to Little Victor’s chops as a producer, Brown couldn’t be more pleased.

“This guy knows how to get that original roots sound, even in a digital world,” he said, adding the CD was cut at Bigtone Records, a studio in San Jose run by one of the hottest rising blues artists in the U.S., Big Jon Atkinson.

They also spent time recording a couple of tunes at Greaseland Records - the dreamchild of Christopher ‘Kid’ Andersen (Charlie Musselwhite, Rick Estrin).

Overall, Brown and his band were in the Golden state for just shy of two weeks.

“We got home on March 1st, started working on the second and hit the road on the fourth,” he laughs. “It’s all work and no play,” he added, tongue in cheek - as there is no other way Brown would have it. He feels absolutely at home on the road, and finds constant inspiration in connecting with his audiences.

Back in 1995 his Home is Where The Harp Is won the coveted Muddy Award for the Best North West Blues release, from the Cascade Blues Association in Portland.

As to his early days, he started playing instruments before he even really knew what they were. As a youngster, his mom would plunk him down with a lap steel guitar and he would come up with all kinds of stuff. In his late teens he landed his first gig as a guitarist with a singer.

Next up he joined a rock band which further solidified his love for touring.

Ultimately, Brown pretty much feels at home wherever he finds himself. It’s a good trait to have, as he’s committed to touring and relishes the realities of life on the road.

“It’s a good healthy distraction if I do say so myself,” he said of his shows, which sizzle with vibrancy.

“For people to forget about their stuff for a little while.”

Singer Lizzy Hoyt brings Celtic style to City

She performs at Gaetz Memorial United Church on March 31st at 7:30 p.m.

Hoyt, who is originally from Edmonton but now calls Winnipeg home, is on

tour with guitarist Chris Tabbert and Red Deer native Keith Rempel (bass).

Her poignant song Vimy Ridge, originally released in 2012, has won international awards and the music video has won 10 awards at international film festivals. “I wrote the song after I went to visit Vimy Ridge for the first time,” she explained. “Going there in person, feeling what it’s like to be on that ground it felt different. All of a sudden, that history was really brought to life for me.

“You can tell something so important happened there.”

Hoyt, who filmed the video at Vimy Ridge along with her sister, wasn’t expecting the piece to wield such a profound impact.

“People seemed to really respond to it when I’d perform it at my shows,” she said. “Really, I just wanted to find a way to share the history with other Canadians, and especially Canadians of a younger generation.

“I’m proud of the fact

that I’m helping to connect people to their history.”

Hoyt’s fourth CD New Lady on the Prairie demonstrates a refined ‘trans-Atlantic’ sound that blends influences from Celtic, bluegrass and folk traditions.

Then at 15, she landed her first professional gig as a fiddle player working with the award-winning Canadian country artist Eli Barsi. It was an exciting venture, with Barsi’s popularity as an artist complete with singles on the radio and videos on CMT.

She worked with Barsi for 10 years as a fiddle player, mandolin player and harmony singer.

During that time, Hoyt also started to freelance as a back-up musician for other recording artists such as Tracy Millar, Samantha King and Maria Dunn. She counts Natalie MacMaster, Dolly Parton and Alison Krauss as major musical influences as well.

Today, she owns her own record label and music management company, Blue Crown Productions.

“In traditional Celtic music, I love the storytelling aspect of it. It’s really intense and it covers a wide range of emotions as well,” she said, reflecting on the genre that touches her the most. ”I also love to tell stories when I write songs.”

Why skipping breakfast is one of the worst things to do I had the extreme privilege of speaking to two groups of students last week (ages 11-12) at a local school. It is truly one of my favourite things to do - teach nutrition and fitness. After 18 years of doing this, I am pleased to say that some things have improved. Our kids today do tend to know more about a lot of things than their predecessors did. I am also sad to say that many things remain the same and some things are worse.

What’s great? Kids know energy drinks and caffeine are bad for them. Iced capps are wonderful for adults, but not for kids (170 mg caffeine). It was fun to teach them how energy drinks work - they force the body to release stored energy from the endocrine system, they do not ‘give’ anyone energy.

It’s like driving a car to Calgary in first gear at 140 km/h with racing fuel. Sure, you feel really fast until the motor blows up!

Like most adults, kids had heard of proteins, fats and carbs, but didn’t really know what they were or how they worked. So it was really fun to explain them all with examples. Protein is like spare and replacement parts, carbohydrates are strictly fuel and energy and fat is fuel, and helps all the cells and fluids stay healthy including joints and the brain. We talked about how much of each thing and what examples are. Again, the kids were fairly informed.

Here’s the big thing that sadly has gotten worse in the last 18 years - kids (and adults – according to our new clients at the gym all the time) are skipping breakfast. What has changed is the reasoning. It used to be overwhelmingly because kids didn’t want to be fat and while that is still true they think that (and it’s still a lie), the number one reason was different. Over 80% of the kids said they always skipped breakfast and the reason was they didn’t have time.

Ouch.

I have to say I don’t buy it because I think they missed how important it is. So we talked about that at length because look, if the reason why is big enough, then ‘how’ doesn’t matter, you find a way.

So why breakfast? Why is it important?

Why bother? Well first off, people think skipping breakfast means your body will burn fat right? Because there is nothing else available and hey, that would be preferred right?! Sorry, nope.

McDERMOTT several reasons. First, muscle is plugged in, it’s electric, it’s tied into the system and readily available to convert to fuel. It’s fast fuel the body can grab immediately, whereas fat takes longer and much more work to access, because it is inert. It is not plugged in, and just sits there. Plus (and this is even more important) when you do not feed yourself your body is convinced you cannot afford muscle because it is

biologically expensive.

Muscle requires food like a big motor requires gas. If you bought a big ole truck with a massive motor and tires but refused to buy more than $5 a week in gas - if your truck acted like your body – it would trade that big motor in for a little tiny engine that was more fuel efficient, make you drive slowly and such. Your body does that too – skip breakfast and your metabolism slows, you cannot think well, you react slower, you are tired and want to go back to bed and you lose muscle. All these things are going the wrong direction. A lot of schools now have a breakfast program, but with budgets what they are, they never have enough protein for growing body’s and minds.

My son is not yet four and he knows how to make a protein shake with healthy choices in less than five minutes and drinks it out of his straw based sippy cup in about the same amount of time. If not a shake then boil a dozen eggs on Sunday and grab a hard boiled egg and some fruit on the way to school or work. What’s that, three minutes? How about cottage cheese with fruit, yogurt, muesli and nuts mixed the night before? Grab it out of the fridge and shovel it in. Zero morning prep required.

Five minutes to eat. If you cannot find five minutes to eat before school, then re-read why it’s important.

Child hunger: how a pharmaceutical company will end it What has ‘Plant a seed and Watch it grow’ have to do with a medical column?

In one word, plenty!

One of today’s medical disasters is that many children in this country are hungry and poor.

Finally, a major pharmaceutical company has come up with a novel idea to eliminate this shameful social condition.

According to the World Health Organization, malnutrition is the greatest threat to public health.

Canada, unlike many of its G8 counterparts, has no national child nutrition program.

So, one in seven children live in poverty and hunger with increased risk of a variety of health problems.

In the U.S., the Department of Agriculture says nine out of 10 Americans are deficient in potassium, eight out of 10 in Vitamin E, seven out of 10 in calcium, and 50% in Vitamin A, C and magnesium.

Studies show that fruits and vegetables contain fewer nutrients than 50 years ago.

Potatoes, which I die for, have lost 100% of Vitamin A, 57% of Vitamin C and iron, and 28 % of calcium.

You don’t require an MBA degree in agriculture to conclude that mineral deficient soil grows mineral deficient foods. A sick soil means sick plants, sick animals and sick people.

So it’s good to be reminded that the other extreme, inadequate nutrition is also a medical time-bomb.

Malnourished children, short of vitamins and minerals may be small in stature, suffer from fatigue, bleeding gums, anemia, aching bones and joints, night blindness, skin troubles and are more susceptible to infection.

Natural Factors wants to establish community gardens for children across the country, for them to

plant seeds and watch them grow.

The company will pay for seeds and all administrative costs related to the garden. Ideally, gardens should be established on school properties, but not necessarily.

In my teens I planted potato and tomato seeds in the back lawn of our home and carefully provided them with water. I remember the excitement of seeing the tomatoes grow and digging up potatoes. It produced a proud feeling of

being part of their growth along with the pleasure of eating my favourite foods.

I was too busy to return to growing vegetables when I finally opened a surgical practice in Toronto, but now my mind wanders back to a small elementary school in Chippawa, Ontario, attended by all my children.

Maybe you’ve guessed what I’m thinking.

I’d like to see if a garden can be established at the school. If readers share my view that poor nutrition

High school basketball heats up during provincials

BY ZACHARY CORMIER RED DEER EXPRESS It was not an easy weekend for Red Deer’s high school basketball teams during the 2016 Alberta High Schools’ Athletic Association 4A Basketball Provincials.

The Provincial tournament, which was held at Red Deer’s three high schools from Thursday through Saturday last weekend, featured 32 of the best boys and girls high school basketball teams from around Alberta, all vying for the provincial championship.

“We were happy with the outcome,” said Kathy Lalor, the head coach of the Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School Raiders girls’ team, who were Red Deer’s biggest winners on the weekend.

Lalor’s team ended up winning the consolation final of the tournament, defeating the St. Mary’s Saints 68-64 in overtime at Lindsay Thurber on Saturday morning.

It was a good weekend overall for LTCHS, who only lost a single game on the weekend. The only problem was the game they lost was their first of the tournament, a 56-43 defeat at the hands of the fifth seed Spruce Grove Panthers, which determined which side of the bracket they would be playing on.

“We weren’t happy with how well we played (in that first game). You know, 43 is a low number of points for us,” Lalor said.

The Raiders bounced back well, though, and earned a big 72-43 victory over Foothill Composite High School in their next game on Friday morning.

Lalor said that game, in particular, really turned things around for the team.

“I really felt like, that game, every girl on our team made a huge contribution. Whether it was in scoring or playing good defense or coming off the

bench and being able to give us some really good minutes. I just thought it was probably one of our best team games of the year.”

And Thurber wasn’t done yet, as they kept the momentum going and rolled to a big upset win over ninth seeded Cardston 79-71 on Friday evening.

“Cardston is a very good team and we knew we were going to have to play one of our best games to beat them,” Lalor said.

“Friday was just a great day because we played four good quarters in each of those games and that’s something, as a coach, that you really hope happens by the end of the season.”

The win over Cardston set the stage for the consolation final on Saturday morning against St. Mary’s.

“We set a goal after that (first) game, we wanted to try to win the consolation and we knew we were going to have to play hard to do it,” Lalor said.

With just two seeds separating St. Mary’s and LTCHS in the standings, it was bound to be a dramatic matchup.

“They’re always a good team,” Lalor said of the Saints.

But the Raiders were on a mission and came out of the gates flying. They led the game through the first three quarters of play, scoring 54 points in the first three quarters alone while holding their opposition to just 41.

“Our first three quarters, I thought, were really solid. We played good defense, ran our fast breaks and we were able to put the ball in the hoop.”

The fourth quarter, though, was a bit of a different story.

“Our last quarter, we struggled,” Lalor said.

The Raiders managed to score just four points in the final quarter as the Saints came surging back on a 17-2 run to take a 58-56 lead into the final minute of the fourth.

Rebels prepare for first round against Calgary

BY ZACHARY CORMIER RED DEER EXPRESS The Red Deer Rebels are gearing up for a tough WHL post-season matchup with the Calgary Hitmen after wrapping up their regular season on Saturday night at home against the Edmonton Oil Kings.

The Rebels finished off the season with a convincing 7-2 victory over the Oil Kings at the Enmax Centrium on Saturday thanks to contributions from five different Rebels and big two goal performances from Colton Bobyk and Austin Pratt.

“I thought we played pretty well. Our start was really good, our first and second periods were really good and when you get a lead like that, you know, you’re just trying to get through the third period without getting anybody banged up or getting any more injuries,” said Rebels’ Head Coach/GM Brent Sutter after Saturday’s game.

With the win, the team put a bow on an impressive season that saw them post a 45-24-1-2 overall record to finish just a single point out of first place in the WHL’s competitive

East Central Division.

“We wanted to finish the regular season off the right way,” Sutter said, adding the team’s focus will now be on preparing for the playoffs and their first round matchup against provincial rivals in Calgary.

“I expect it to be a tough series. I expect Calgary to play the way Calgary plays.

They’ve played us hard all year, it’s been some tough games with them.”

The Hitmen have been among Red Deer’s toughest opponents this season.

In seven meetings between the two clubs this

season, Calgary has won four while the Rebs took three.

Calgary also managed to out score the Rebels 26-18 in those games.

“Every game’s gonna be a battle. We’ll just go one shift, one game at a time and I think we should be able to beat them pretty easy,” said Colton Bobyk about the impending playoff series, which starts on Friday in Red Deer.

The post season, however, didn’t get off to a great start for the Rebels, who learned on Monday that they will be starting the playoffs without top six

forward Connor Bleackley, who is out indefinitely with a wrist laceration suffered during Saturday’s game against Edmonton.

Bleackley, who is in his third year with the club, suffered the injury when his wrist was cut by a skate blade in the first period of Saturday’s game. He was taken to hospital and later underwent surgery.

The 19-year-old forward just recently returned from a six week absence due to a cracked knee cap earlier this year.

While Bleackley’s injury is a setback for the club, Sutter said the club’s focus

remains intact.

“It’s playoff time. If you play well anybody can beat anybody, so you’ve got to make sure you’re ready to play. It’s going to be a tough series. They’ve got a very good team and we have to make sure that we’re prepared and that we do what we need to do.”

Central Alberta Buccaneers begin season preparations

BY ZACHARY CORMIER RED DEER EXPRESS It may only be the beginning of March, but the Central Alberta Buccaneers are already busy preparing for the 2016 Alberta Football League season.

The Bucs held their first four indoor practices of the season last month in Red Deer as they began informal training for the new season, which begins on May 28th.

“We’ve had four so far. We were practicing at the Argicentre down at Westerner Park. Really awesome turnouts. We’ve had about 55 guys each time,” said CA Bucs Chairman Todd Lewis of the practices, which began in late January.

Currently the team is holding informal practices only, meaning no pads or helmets for the players. Official outdoor practices begin in April.

“It is still structured and organized,” Lewis said, adding that Head Coach Devon Hand has made sure the practices are running smoothly.

In addition to their preparations on the field, the Bucs have also been fairly active off the field and in the community, especially over the past week as they held their first team blood drive of the year and participated in the Bowl for Kids Sake fundraiser in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lacombe.

“We’re pretty busy with the community stuff, even more so this year. We’re pretty consistent, actually throughout the offseason. Usually one or two events each

month, it seemed. So that was awesome,” said Lewis, who added the team’s commitment to community involvement can be a huge benefit for players.

“It’s huge. It’s crucial. Football is the team sport. If one cog in your machine isn’t turning then the entire machine doesn’t function. So it’s essential to have chemistry, to have a bond between teammates.”

According to Lewis, that team closeness is becoming more important to the Buccaneers than ever.

“We have a bunch of players coming from out of Central Alberta. We’ve got guys coming from Eastern Canada and other parts of North America, so quite a few new guys coming in don’t really know anyone just yet, so it’s crucial to get these guys coming to hang out with our core group and integrating them and making them a part of the core group. The opportunity to do that while helping out kids’ camps or donating blood or bowling for Big Brothers Big Sisters, that’s just an added bonus,” he said, adding about 15 new Bucs have

joined the club.

“We’re hoping to have a 50-man roster.

With that amount of depth, we’re only going to be stronger.”

With the new players, the team will be able to have first and second lines on offense and defense, and be able to play, “What Coach Hand calls three phase football. So be strong on offense and defense, like every team aims to be, but also be really strong and dominant on special teams,” Lewis said.

The Buccaneers will be looking to build off last season, which saw them make it to the AFL semi-final game on the field and being recognized as the Lacombe and District Chamber of Commerce’s NotFor-Profit of the Year and the AFL’s Organization of the Year.

“It was pretty awesome. We enjoyed a pretty successful year, so I expect us just to continue building, to get out in the community as much as we possibly can and to give back. It not only helps our community and our home towns but it strengthens us as a whole,” Lewis said,

“Any and all that are interested in being a Buccaneer, come check out our practices right now. They’re absolutely free, they’re obligation free at this point. You can come check it out. If you find out it’s not for you, that’s fine, but hopefully you’ll come check it out and you’ll like it and stick around.”

As the season draws closer, the Bucs, who are a not for profit organization, will also kick off their fundraising campaign.

“May 14th we’ve got our biggest fundraiser of the year, which is our Buc Pub Night. It’s our fourth annual one, and that’s being held at Bo’s Bar and Grill,” Lewis said.

The team is now selling tickets for the event, which helps pay for team expenses such as road trip buses, hotels and player insurance. The adult-only evening will also include live music, a silent auction, a 50/50 raffle and is sure to be a ton of fun.

“It’s crucial for our team. Especially in this economic climate we found it’s trickier than ever to track down sponsorship and as a not for profit we’re dependent on fundraisers and sponsorship, so without that sponsorship, as much coming in as we would like, we’re even more dependent on these fundraisers.”

Tickets for the pub night are $20 each and include a free drink and appetizer at the pub. They can be purchased from any CA Bucs player or by commenting on the team’s Facebook page.

Imagining a fresh decorative look for your home I just had a look back at my childhood home.

I was looking up recent listings in Medicine Hat and there was the beautiful grand lady I grew up in which unfortunately had been given a coat of green paint over the classic brick exterior, but then I looked inside.

Wow, all I could do was try to pick my mouth up off of the floor as I scrolled through picture after picture showing modern interiors and rooms with completely new functions!

The entire main floor was re-routed with walls removed, patio doors installed and a sleek, modern kitchen where my mom’s oak cabinets used to reside. The palette had gone from blue and green into whites and greys while keeping the amber glow of the original hardwood floors.

To access this room, you had to walk through the master bedroom closet which always made it an adventurous getaway to play with my barbies or to hang out with friends.

My bedroom has been converted to a walk-in closet which would make any woman drool and is the perfect space since I always felt it was too small for a bedroom anyways.

The upstairs bath was completely re-

worked with all fixtures in different places than I remember yet it works so much better than the original configuration that was designed by my mom in the 70’s.

The photos don’t show the floors but I’m sure the new owners responsible for the renovations had removed the blue sculptured carpet from the bath immediately upon moving in! My mom was one of the few who enjoyed carpet in a bathroom despite what everyone said about bacteria.

It was a complete trip to walk through this home again and see all the changes.

It was also exciting to see a home which is still solid despite its 100+ years that someone loved enough to give it new life.

When you talk about a house that has ‘good bones’ this is the kind of house we are speaking about – a place that has stood the test of time yet offers you the creativity to create a new and wonderful interior.

Did your lender really mean no?

The truth of the matter is that the mortgage lending landscape has changed drastically in the last few years. What was once a straightforward matter is now often a trudge through an unexpected maze of hoops.

This week we are going to take a look at why that is and how you can get to yes ASAP. The first part of the equation is the government.

The federal government guarantees mortgages in Canada through the mortgage default insurers.

Often even those with more than 20% down, you just don’t pay the premium then. This means they are tying the entire country’s fiscal well-being to the housing market. If too many bad loans are given there would be pressure on the government to account for the lending practices which got us to that precarious position.

The second part of the equation is the current economic situation here in Alberta.

It is no surprise to any of us that foreclosures and late payments are on the rise. What that means for mortgage lending is that the lenders and the mortgage insurers are examining every file much more closely.

They want to see that we all have some extra funds in the bank to cover a slowdown or other life event.

They also want to see some very strong credit management.

Gone are the days of lenders looking the other way on credit issues. These days they want to know what happened and your plan to ensure that it will not happen again.

So what if you have decent credit and some savings and your lender still says no, what should you do then?

The first thing to keep in mind is that each institution has very different guidelines given to them by shareholders and investors and other behind the scenes people. Just because your application is not a fit with the first lender does not mean the next will not proceed.

You may need to consider an alternative lender if it comes right down to it. It is quite possible that your situation puts you in a position where this can be the best and maybe even the only choice.

For example. Say you are self-employed and choose to claim little income.

Your reasons for this could be to keep your company strong or your personal taxes low. The problem here is that we no longer have a whole bunch of lenders willing to accept income without verification of it via your tax returns.

Or say you are a doctor new to Canada, your income may be hard to prove to the satisfaction of the mainstream lenders.

Or if you have blemished or damaged credit which leaves the lenders thinking you are too large a risk.

There are a myriad of situations which may put you outside the ‘normal’ guidelines. In any of these cases it is important to note that there are many alternate lenders who may suit you perfectly.

Things to keep in mind here - these lenders will require you to have some skin in the game.

You will need at least 15% to put down depending on your credit score, income, and the location of the property. Also, the rates will be higher given the increased risk to the lender for lending outside the norm.

You may also be facing lender fees with certain lenders though it can still make sense to help pay out high interest debts or avoid mortgage default fees.

Talk to a well-qualified mortgage professional today to see if the ‘no’ you were given can be turned into a ‘yes’.
