PeeWee C tournament provides fun and exciting hockey action Silver medalists: Rimbey Canalta Renegade PeeWees took the silver medal at a Provincial tournament hosted in Rimbey March 10 to 13. The PeeWees lost in the gold medal game against Marwayne. BY TREENA MIELKE It seems like the Rimbey PeeWee Canalta Renegades could have all won a heart and hustle award for the unwavering determination and skill they displayed at every game they played at the Provincial tournament held in their home town on the weekend.

The team won every game prior to going into the gold medal game against

Marwayne, Sunday afternoon.

Unfortunately, in spite their best efforts, and a great cheering section of hometown fans, Rimbey lost to Marwayne 8-0.

Coach Jason Ryden is proud of his team, but has no qualms about giving Marywayne credit for their win.

“Marywayne is a strong team. Our guys did great, though and they need to hold their heads up. It is tough to get to the final.

“Overall, they played very well.”

The Renegades won 3-2 against Coaldale, Thursday, defeated Fairview 4-2 Friday and crushed the CR Knights 11-2 Saturday. They narrowly squeaked by Bentley in the semi finals with a 1-0 win, Sunday morning.

Bentley’s head coach Jeremy Park said the Canucks has made it a goal earlier in the season to qualify for provincials.

“We did that and the team played very well at Provincials. I am very proud of them.”

Bentley Canucks defeated Hanna 11- 3 in their first game, lost to Marwayne 9-2 in game two, defeated Big Valley 3-0 in game three and were edged out by Rimbey 1-0 in the semi-finals.

Teams participating in the PeeWee C provincials in Rimbey were Rimbey Canalta Renegades, Bentley Canucks, Hanna Colts, Big Valley Thunder, Coaldale, Fairview, CR Knights and Marywayne Sled Dogs.

PeeWee C tournament in Rimbey draws good crowd

BY TREENA MIELKE The stands at the Rimbey arena were packed last weekend as hockey fans came out in great numbers to cheer on the team of their choice during the PeeWee C provincials.

Silver medal winners, Rimbey Canalta PeeWee Renegades hosted the provincials and eight teams participated.

Hockey Alberta Zone 4 representative, Lane Moore said the tournament organizers did a great job, noting host chairman Shannon Mann deserved kudos for going above

and beyond to make the event a success. Moore also gave credit to the many volunteers who gave of their time and energy to ensure the provincials held in Rimbey were a class act from start to finish.

The 2006 Olympic bronze medal winner in the women’s skeleton race, Mellisa Hollingsworth was the guest speaker at the opening ceremonies. During her presentation she showed a short video of her time as an Olympic athlete.

“I know what it’s like to be in a pressure cooker and not

win,” she said. “Just remember to play hard and play fair.

It’s okay to be emotional.”

Hollingsworth said at the end of the day, fun, family and roots are the three things that really matter.

Mayor Rick Pankiw, who also spoke at the opening ceremonies encouraged the crowd to check out Rimbey while they were here for the Provincials.

“Take some time and enjoy our town. Tour around and check it out. Have fun, enjoy and be sure and come back.”

Treena Mielke On The Other Side In my lifetime I have experienced many lessons, and, maybe, even learned a thing or two.

One can only hope.

However, I seem to have come up with very few reliable truths, mostly because to me anyway, there always seems to be the other side to consider.

I would like to attribute this thought process to a journalistic mind, but I’m afraid some less than kind people would say I think the way I think because I’m a fence sitter.

For that very reason, I have never been one to dole out advice to my children, neither sage nor phil-

And pussywillows. I love pussywillows.

This morning, as I waited for my Keurig coffee maker to do its thing, I glanced up at a simple bouquet of pussywillows a friend had thoughtfully picked for me.

I had arranged the branches in a sparkling clean jelly jar and placed them on a yellow shelf in my kitchen.

When I glanced at the bouquet, it was early morning and the sounds of silence from the night before still lingered in my modest bi-level home, only interrupted by the faint gurgle of the coffee maker.

The room was sun kissed and tidy, not yet touched by the disarray of daily living.

The pussywillows, trapped in their crystal prison, nodded their soft grey heads at me, and suddenly, my mind, unbidden, went on a journey of its own.

I was driving down a

dusty gravel road, jumping over a ditch where black water oozed through quack grass and rocks, finally climbing through a barbed wire fence.

My running shoes sank almost to their tops in the gooey mud.

But it didn’t matter. I had my prize within reach. An explosion of pussywillows.

I happily helped myself, eagerly breaking off the branches without the aid of scissors or knife.

How many springs have I done that? For sure, more springs than I can remember.

Sometimes with my dad as he drove an old ’49 Chevy down the road to somewhere, sometimes with my kids as they raced through childhood on an ever ending quest to grow up and most recently with my grandchildren.

And sometimes, just with me.

stopped gurgling. My coffee was ready, but I was not and the day was calling.

But, suddenly, for some reason in that particular moment, I felt an overwhelming sense of joy, a feeling that doesn’t really need nor should be explained.

My feeling of joy evaporated slightly when I forgot my coffee cup at home, discovered we were out of milk and the number on the scales in my bathroom went up instead of down, overnight.

But, even with the little crappy things that sneaked uninvited into my day, like pesky mosquitoes, I was quite pleased and even just a tiny bit smug that I knew what it was like to feel, for one fleeting moment in time, joy in the morning.

And I’m pretty sure, in fact, almost positive, it had something to do with those pussywillows.

The perils of taking risks while ice fishing

Instead I have said stuff like “wait and see” or “follow your heart.” In other words, make up your own mind and know, that no matter what happens, I have your back.

Anyway, they say there are only two things in life that are certain and true and these are death and taxes.

Well, I beg to differ.

Pussywillows. These are certain and true. I’m sure of it.

Pussywillows come every year, a gentle, soft reminder that life, with all its unexpected sorrows and unexplained tragedies, keeps on keeping on.

I have, always and forever, been a lover of simple things.

Simple things like sheets, wind dried on a clothes line, smelling all fragrant and fresh like spring itself, red geraniums blooming like crazy on a white painted windowsill, and sweet peas climbing in reckless abandon up a picket fence, cheerfully covering up human neglect like peeling paint.

I just heard on the radio the other day that all of the ice fishing huts need to be removed from the lakes.

The request is coming in earlier than normal due to a fast approaching spring.

It gets pretty scary fishing when the ice integrity is

questionable. All it takes is a hefty crack and the next sound you’ll hear is a splosh.

No reasonable amount of red and white fishing bobbers can act as personal flotation device. I speak from my own experience. I’ve done a fair bit of ice fishing on Gull Lake, Medicine Lake and Sylvan Lake, but I’ve only iced fished on Open Creek once. I tend to only fish that body of water in the summer these days.

I have a good friend, Dusty Rhodes (the name you read isn’t a pseudonym). He will fish anywhere where he can get a line in. Dusty and I have done a lot of fishing together. The problem with fishing with Dusty is that

when there isn’t much biting, he gets bored and wants to try somewhere else. During one of our winter ice fishing excursions, Dusty convinced me to head out to Open Creek; it’s someplace close that neither one of us has ice fished ever.

The thing about Open Creek is it has a spring running into the lake on one side. Where the spring runs in no ice seems to form. This is perfect when a couple of ice fishing buddies are too lazy to unpack the auger and carry it from the truck down to the ice surface.

We kept a considerable distance from the open water near the spring and threw our lines in. It was brilliant. We caught fish

after fish. The fish were only suckers and they weren’t much to brag about. Regardless though, Dusty and I were catching fish and enjoying ourselves. Our confidence grew and we slowly begun to advance to the open water where the spring ran in.

While Dusty was pulling up another catch, the ice cracked where I was standing. I fell in. My winter boots, heavy socks, long johns, pants, undershirt, long sleeve shirt, sweater, jacket, mitts, and toque absorbed a whole lot of ice cold winter water.

Thankfully Dusty was quick to react—when I resurfaced, he managed to pull up out of the water.

I ran to the truck while

simultaneously removing all my soaked clothing. I hopped into the passenger seat nearly naked. Dusty started up the truck and got the heat going. He said I looked and sounded like a seal when I sprang up out of the water. It’s miraculous that I never got hypothermia, though a couple days later I caught a cough and had to abstain from ice fishing with Dusty for a weekend or two.

I tend to be a little more cognizant of the ice when I’m out fishing these days.

When I heard on the radio that the ice fishing shacks need to be removed earlier this year, I simply nodded and thought about how wet and cold falling through the ice at Open Creek was.

Most Albertans can spend their entire lives in woodland habitat without ever seeing one of these charming little owls. Yet, they are one of the most common of our owl species.

The Northern Saw-whet Owl breeds in mature woodland habitat throughout Alberta. It is most common in the southern boreal forest, foothills and parkland regions. In the far northern boreal region it is replaced

by the slightly larger resident Boreal Owl. It may be found in the wooded coulees and farmsteads of the prairie regions during migration. Most birds leave Alberta during the winter months, but each year a few hardy denizens seem to endure our winters here.

Saw-whet Owls are cavity nesters, often using tree holes created in past years

by Northern Flickers or Pileated Woodpeckers. They will readily use nest boxes continued on page 9

Participates brought their own horses and harness and learned aspects from harnessing to ground driving and some also progressed into carts. Saw-whet owls are cavity nesters continued from page 5 when they are available. These birds are nocturnal by nature and hide very effectively among dense foliage during the daytime, and as a result, rarely attract attention. Often the only clue that saw-whets are nesting nearby is the nighttime call of the male, a long monotonous whistled toot, toot, toot…

The birds are usually nesting by early April, and a tap on the base of the nest tree will have the female peeking out of the cavity to identify the disturbance. The nest usually contains four to six eggs, which hatch after about four weeks of incubation. The young are on the wing by mid-June most years, are fed for several more weeks by the adults and are usually independent by mid-July.

The diet of saw-whets consists mostly of mice – voles, deer mice and jumping mice - but may also include shrews, small birds and insects. These birds are quite nomadic and may be quite abundant during high rodent years and relatively scarce at other times.

The Northern Saw-whet Owl is one of our smallest owls, weighing between 75 and 100 grams, about the size of a robin.

It is a very quiet bird, and will often allow close approach if discovered during the daytime, and in some cases will even allow itself to be touched. Its status in Alberta appears secure at this time. This owl has been the subject of intense study in North America during the last two decades and researchers are just now beginning to understand the mysteries of this charming little bird.

BY TREENA MIELKE A funeral mass was held at St. Joseph’s Basilica in Edmonton on March 3 to celebrate the life of a courageous woman, who never let her blindness stand in the way of leading a caring, productive life.

Now, just a few short weeks after the funeral of his beloved sister, Alvin Gaetz tells her story mostly

because he believes it is a story that needs to be told.

Doris Goetz was born in 1941, the youngest of 10 children. She was raised on a farm in the Bluffton area.

“She had big blue eyes,” Goetz said, remembering his sister, even from birth appeared to have something wrong with her eyes.

Doris Goetz adjusted to city life and committed herself to helping others continued from page 11 eyes she cried in pain and when she was outside she has to hold her little fists over them as the bright light hurt.”

It was later discovered the child had been born with glaucoma. During her growing up years, Goetz had only limited sight and in her mid 20s she became legally blind.

In 1947 when she was only eight years old, the Red Cross financially assisted the family so they could take her to a hospital in San Francisco.

“The trip was made in the spring in an old 1934 Chev on lots of gravel roads.

Many flat tires later they made it,” Alvin remembered.

The child was left at the clinic until October where she underwent electro therapy treatments.

During her months at the clinic, a nurse at the hospital took her under her wing and sent letters home with updates about the little girl.

“In October we got the message that we could bring her home. Dad went by train down to get her and brought her back.”

Goetz said his sister was excited to come home and especially enjoyed the ferry ride from Seattle to Vancouver.

Finally, Doris settled down to school in Bluffton where an understanding teacher put her at the front of the classroom so she could read the blackboard. But her eyesight continued to deteriorate and three years later, the teacher suggested she go to a residential school in Brantford, Ontario.

“I still remember her walking out to the farm to tell us that,” Goetz said.

So for the second time in her short life, Doris was uprooted, this time to travel to Ontario, where she would encounter a completely different way of life, away from her siblings and her parents.

She was 11 years-old.

“It was like being on the moon,” Alvin said. “She didn’t get to come home for Christmas or Easter, just summer breaks.”

When Doris came home on those summer breaks she enjoyed picking peas and beans from the family garden and she loved to shell peas.

One time one of her sis-

ters took out to the cow pasture to let her drive a car.

“We were teasing her. We told her she had done everything, now when was she going to drive a car?

She ran over more cow patties than we could even see,” he said with a chuckle.

After she completed her schooling, Doris took CNIB training at the University of Toronto. Her training enabled her to help other visually impaired people to be independent by teaching them Braille, identifying money, using the telephone and being safe around a stove.

In 1964 she moved to Edmonton where she con-

tinued to work for the CNIB until her retirement.

Doris adapted to city living very well, Alvin said.

“For the first six years she took the bus to work, he said. “And for 25 years she crossed Jasper Avenue twice a day. “She knew her way around very well.

Anyone who got lost in the city could phone her. She would tell them what to do,” he added with a wry smile.

In the early ‘90s she got a guide dog and each and every dog she ever owned became her total companion.

Throughout her lifetime, the visually impaired farm girl, who later became quite

used to urban living, believed that blind people needed to be treated with respect, but not waited on as if they were incapable of performing tasks necessary for daily living.

As well as helping other with a gentle nudge of spiritual and practical support, Goetz found the time to enjoy life to the fullest.

She loved balcony gardening. An accomplished pianist herself, she enjoyed listening to classical music and attending the symphony theatre, opera and movies. She enjoyed entertaining, knitting, crocheting and doing needlepoint.

She especially enjoyed the companionship of her

beloved guide dogs: Dee, Empress, Tim and Wilda.

Her second last dog, Tim had a different owner, but still he became very agitated when Doris passed away,” said Goetz. “Animals have a sixth sense. They know.”

Looking back on his sister’s life, Goetz realizes that the guide dogs played a vital and important role.

“I would like to see more money go towards guide dogs,” he said. There is a waiting list for those dogs and they can help so many people.

BRUHN Eva Annie Yardley Bruhn of Rimbey, Alberta passed away peacefully at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Long Term Care on Sunday, March 13, 2016 at the age of 93 years.

Eva was born in Copenhagen, Denmark and was the last survivor of nine siblings. She met Rydich at an Agricultural College in Denmark, and they were married in 1944. In 1949, they immigrated to Canada with their daughter, Ulla. They arrived in Southern Alberta and worked on a grain farm where their son, Chris was born. In 1965, the family moved to a mixed farm near Rimbey. Together they farmed until 1987 when they retired to the Summer Village of Parkland Beach. Eva enjoyed her years of farm life. Her gardens were large and plentiful. She was admired by family and friends as a fabulous cook, her baking and decorated cakes always scrumptious. She had a great love for Rottweiler’s, and could be seen walking the dogs in the Parkland Beach area. Eva was a compassionate person, always concerned about the welfare of others.

After Rydich’s death she moved to Rimbey where she began her volunteer work at the Rimbey Long Term Care Centre for six years.

Eva will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her daughter, Ulla; and son, Chris (Sandy) of Rimbey; and her grandchildren, Janean and Michael; as well as several nieces and nephews in Canada and Denmark.

Eva was predeceased by her husband, Rydich in 2007; and her son-in-law, Bob Crouch in 2015.

With respect for Eva’s wishes, no formal Funeral Service will be held. Cremation took place in Red Deer, Alberta.

A Family Celebration of Life and Graveside Service will take place at a later date in the West Haven Cemetery, Rimbey. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Eva’s Memory may be made directly to the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre ~ Administration, Box 440, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0. NEULS Valerie “Val” M. Neuls of Rimbey, Alberta passed away after a lengthy illness at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Rimbey on Sunday, March 13, 2016 at the age of 62 years.

Val was well-known in the community as she owned the Rimbey Barber Shop. In spite of her failing health, she showed up for work with a positive attitude and a smile for everyone. She had a compassionate heart for her many senior friends.

Val will be missed by her loving partner, Richard; and her two sisters, Cheryl (Terry) Markovich and family; and Denise (Lanny) Dubielew and family. Her six nieces will treasure their memories of a very special Auntie Val. Val was predeceased by her parents, Harry and Marge Strain; her husband, Howard Neuls; and a nephew, Jolby Dubielew.

A Public Memorial Service in Celebration of Val’s Life will be held at the Rimbey United Church, Rimbey on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. There will also be a Private Family Gathering in Val’s Memory that will take place at a later date. Former park warden recalls wood bison recovery plan

BY EARL GORDON Earl Gordon, a retired Park Warden and technical officer in charge of Buffalo Management at Hay Camp who now lives at Gull Lake recalls the 1958 Wood Bison Recovery Plan In the winter of 1959 I met with Ed Olson, Superintendent of Wood Buffalo National Park.

After a lengthy meeting, it was determined that I was to provide backup for the cat skinners to open a winter trail to Needle Lake where a herd of dark looking buffalo was spotted by air.

The following people were involved with the search: Pat Carey (bush pilot), Harold and Ray Steed (cat skinners, Wilf McNeil (laborer), Ron Ward, Laborer, Billy Schaffer (laborer), Nick Novakowski (CWS biologist), Earl Gordon (park warden) and an unknown representative from Ottawa.

The U.S. Army had opened up a bush trail during World War 11 from Fort Smith to Hay River.

This was helpful to us in our search.

Once the buffalo were spotted by ground crew, my job would be to shoot five head for scientific research. Once this was done five heads would be brought out including blood samples, glands, etc.

We skinned and checked the stomachs for parasites. All the above was shipped to Ottawa for study.

After two years, the scientists made a major announcement: these were, indeed, pure Wood Bison.

Subsequently, a summer ground crew built corrals to capture them. A round up in 1963 corralled a large number of animals that were to be quarantined at Salt Flats, west of Fort Smith.

Due to another anthrax outbreak in the area, they were quickly moved to Fort Providence to start a new herd.

In recent years, there were many animals corralled and recovered and sent to Elk Island National Park. From here there were numerous transplants to several provinces to start new herds, including a herd at Syncrude heavy Oil Plant at Ft. McMurray.

A large number was sent to Russia, which was to replace a diminished herd from 10,000 years ago.

Bison transported to Siberia (The following information is an excerpt from an article published in The Americas) A decade ago, the Canadian government working in cooperation with wildlife biologists, loaded 15 males and 15 female wood bison from Elk Island National Park to Edmonton International Airport.

The animals were then transported to Yakutians, the capital of the Republic of Sakha, located in northeast Siberia. When they arrived they were met with a welcoming committee consisting of some 200 Yakutians as well as the president of the country.

The crowd performed dances and serenaded the herd with a blessing song.

The Canadians who had come along on the trip were offered raw horse liver and wooden goblets filled with an alcoholic beverage made from fermented mare’s milk.

Many of the Yakutians had not seen bison.

About 10,000 years ago, the steppe bison, an animal twice the size of the wood bison, lived in Siberia. However, a combination of hunting and climate change likely has resulted in the extinction of them.

Men’s ‘spiel small, but great fun

BY JUNE NORVILA The Bentley Men’s Skins bonspiel took place at the local rink with the first game the evening of February 26, and three more draws on February 27.

In the gold medal match the Don Olson rink of Spruceview with Don Olson skipping, third Joey Olson and second Allan Olson, and lead Scott Tomkins defeated the Kyle Brink rink of Bentley giving skip Kyle Brink, third Jason Wiese, second Riley Poffenroth, and lead Kyle Rose the silver.

The Bentley team of Skip Norm Rieu with third, Tim Fedor, second Colin Shultz, and lead Wade Nicks (who subbed for Rob Sanders) defeated the Doug Weir Rink of Sylvan Lake for Bronze.

There seems to be another bonspiel running competition somewhere else every time the date for this spiel is set.

With eight teams, all teams played each of the four draws. It was a fun social time for the participants. There was a chili lunch and a pizza supper provided on Saturday.
