Tips for a safe summer of RV fun not burn your lenses! 5) Solar panels are a silent way of keeping your batteries charged. The costs of Solar panels have dropped significantly in the last few years. 6) Brake inspection is also important before hitting the road for the season. While many of the newer units have self adjusting braking systems, some newer and most older units do not. During a Wheel Bearing Repack Service we check all of your brake components, adjustment, and operation. We check tire condition and set your tire pressures. 7) It is very important to have your roof, all moldings and windows inspected for proper seal. Water entry into your R.V. leads to expensive structural repairs. 8) Remember to check all of your interior and exterior lights. Corrosion over the winter may have caused them to quit working. 9) Save fuel by carrying only what water you need for immediate use or fill up at a convenient location just before you arrive at your destination. Remember to drain your tanks prior to leaving as well. Periodically drain your hot water heater to keep it from getting stagnant, as well as to remove hard water deposits that collect inside the hot water tank during normal use. 10) Spring is a great time to go through all of your compartments, cupboards, and closets. Clear out all broken or unused items, such as extra cookware, tools, toys and clothes. The added weight of excess items is costing you money in the form of additional fuel. 11) Stop on occasion during your trip and do a walk around your unit to ensure that everything is as it should be. 12) Most of all, take time to ‘stop and smell the roses,’ enjoy your R.V’ing experience in the wonderful Province that we live in. To ensure happy camping this year, here is a list of things to check or consider. 1) Have your propane system inspected for proper pressure and potential leaks, by a licensed technician. Age as well as the expansion and contraction of winter temperature changes can cause leaks to appear. Your propane regulator should also be tested for proper pressure and operation and should be replaced if it is more than 10 years old. Your appliances should be checked for dirt, rust and spider nests, prior to operation. 2) Be sure to test your water system before heading out for the first time. Flush out the residual antifreeze and check it all over for leaks. Leisureland R.V. Centre has a Summerize program that takes care of these chores for you. 3) Are your batteries more that 5 years old? It may be time to consider replacing them. Regardless of age, be certain to check the water level and top them up at the beginning of the season. Be sure to check them periodically throughout the year as well. 4) If you do a lot of back country camping you might want to consider the extra capacity of a two 6 volt batteries, and switching to the use of low power consumption LED lights. You can have up to 10 LED lights on for the same consumption of 1 older style incandescent light, and they do

Vehicle owners know maintaining a vehicle can be a lot of work. Taking the time to properly care for a vehicle can prolong its life expectancy and help owners avoid breakdowns and other issues along the way. Regular washing is an aspect of vehicle maintenance that some may classify as a purely cosmetic benefit. Certainly a car wash can keep the vehicle looking its best, but there are other advantages to washing as well. Washing offers preventative maintenance for the car’s paint and can help prevent rust and corrosion resulting from dirt, acid rain and road salt. Rust can compromise hydraulic brake and fuel lines, as well as many moving parts in the chassis and frame. Corrosion of electrical connectors and other parts under the hood can lead to leaks, electrical shorts and a host of additional problems. It’s easy to see how washing the car is more essential than one might have suspected.

Car-wash tips to follow

• Always use a proper washing soap solution. This will preserve the car’s finish better than other

homemade soaps. Avoid using dishwashing liquid, which can strip protective wax coatings. • Be prompt when cleaning off bugs, sap and bird droppings that may stick to the paint and become difficult to remove over time. • Wait until a car has cooled down before washing. Heat speeds up the drying of soap and water and can make it more difficult to clean. • Always use a clean, non-abrasive sponge. Resist the urge to move the sponge in circles as you clean. Doing so can create noticeable swirl scratch marks. Instead, move the sponge lengthwise across the body panels and hood. • Keep a separate rinsing bucket to clean the sponge or washing mitt so that dirt is not mixed into the clean, sudsy water. • Wax the car every season to ensure it has maximum protection. In between, apply a liquid spray wax to touch up spots. Water beading is not an ideal indicator of whether or not the car needs a coat of wax. • Don’t forget to pay attention to the interior. Vacuum the carpets regularly to prevent groundin dirt and routinely clean the upholstery with a product specific to your vehicle’s interior, whether that interior is leather or fabric. Protecting a vehicle investment involves keeping the car clean. Know the right ways to help a car or truck look and perform like new.

Taking your truck from Mild 2 Wild Western News Staff

Purchasing a new or used truck is exciting, but personalizing it is even more fun. Murray GM’s Mild 2 Wild division is doing just that. “No one in the South Okanagan does anything quite like this and we know there is a big market for truck customizing,” said Logan Robertson, Murray GM sales and certified installer. “For us it is all about the quality of work and offering people in our area the service to do that without having to go somewhere like Vancouver. It is a way for our customers to personalize their truck and make it unique.” Robertson said one of the most popular customizing options they offer is a wraps. Car wraps are typically made of high-quality vinyls that come in a bevy of different colours and styles. Wraps also can be used for custom graphics or to advertise businesses. “We do it on most of our new inventory because it improves resale value. A wrap protects it from chips by preserving the paint underneath. We can colour match, chrome wrap body pieces and customize things like the GMC logo by making it whatever colour you want,” said Robertson. The vinyl wrap completely covers the paint of the vehicle. But because car wraps can be removed, they do not permanently change the vehicle and are therefore unlikely to affect its resale value. Car wrapping can take less time than a laborintensive paint job. Some jobs can be completed in only two or three days. Car wraps also may be the less expensive option if you’re not selecting a complicated, custom design.

Many car wraps will last between five to seven years, which is on par with the life span of a professional paint job, which lasts five to 10 years. Changing the look of a vehicle may be as simple as choosing a new exterior colour. Professional paint services and vinyl car wraps make it easy to switch up the style of a car or truck. Robertson said Murray GM wrapped a truck in matte black and have been touring it at various car shows and has seen the demand for the product increase ever since. It is not just for businesses wanting to advertise either, Robertson said customers can come in with their own logo’s or designs and they can re-create them with their software into a vinyl wrap — one customer took a combination of his favourite NFL team and comic book character and wrapped his truck with it taking it to the Mild 2 Wild concept to the extreme. “It’s pretty neat looking,” said Robertson. “We have also had people coming in doing a complete colour change of their vehicle with the vinyl wrap.” Giving a vehicle a fresh look isn’t the only thing

the Mild 2 Wild division does. They instal custom leather seats, deck vehicles out with all the latest accessories, rims and tires, window tinting, air intakes, lift/lower and levelling kits, after-market headlights, exhaust systems and can spray in new box liners. “We can spray in a material that is thicker than the factory box-liner and has a rubbery like feel to it. This helps keep objects in the back from sliding around and damaging the box,” said Robertson. Murray GM can work accessories into their financing for those purchasing vehicles so they can make their vehicle unique to them. “We have a ton of store inventory from things like tents that can be set up in the box of a truck to running boards. The very first Honda Accord, introduced to Canadians back in 1976, was about the same size as today’s Civic sedan and it had a less-

powerful engine. When the eighth generation Accord was introduced in 2008, it was officially classified as a “large car” and came with a 190-horse-

power 4-cylinder engine, or an even more powerful optional V6. Eight-gen Accord did get a mild mid-life facelift for the 2011 model year and

it included new front-end styling and some interior improvements. A new base SE trim line also replaced the previous LX trim. The four-cylinder is by far

in 2013 when a landmark, smaller and lighter, all-new ninth generation Honda Accord was released. Although lighter, the 2013 Accord is structurally stronger than the previous generation Accord and although its outer dimensions are more compact and it has a shorter wheelbase, it has more rear seat legroom and a slightly larger trunk, according to Honda. Major changes also happened under-hood with the release of Honda’s new “Earth Dreams” engine technology. This could also be linked to a high-efficiency new CVT automatic with “G-Design Shift Logic.” This feature provides quicker acceleration, as it’s faster acting than a conventional automatic transmission. In addition to being considerably more fuel efficient the 2.4 litre four-cylinder “Earth Dreams” editions of Accord are also super-clean running and complies with PZEV (partial zero emission vehicle) requirements in the US. This engine also supplies more power at low engine speeds, just where you need it, on take-off, on a hill or when merging into freeway traffic. Its city/highway fuel economy ratings of 9.1/6.6 L/100 km, with the CVT, are

outstanding for a familysize sedan. A 6-manual was available with the base LX and Sport trim levels and a conventional 6-automatic came with the V6 engine editions. In addition to four-door sedan and two-door coupe models of Accord, there’s also a five-door hatchback/ cross-over version called Crosstour, which was originally called Accord Crosstour when introduced in 2010. A new plug-in hybrid (sedan) version, called Accord PHEV, was also introduced in 2014. It’s powered by a new two-motor hybrid system that operates continuously through three modes; allelectric, gasoline-electric or direct-drive. Accord sedan has consistently been a top performer in crash tests performed by both the Insurance Insitute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) in the U.S. It’s also highly rated by Consumer Reports for dependability and it has better resale value retention than most in the class. A Canadian family transportation favorite, the Honda Accord sedan is a top used car choice with a solid reputation for dependably and value.

If a road trip is part of your vacation plans this summer, it’s time to get the horseless chariot prepared. That means cleaning it inside and out and performing some important maintenance to ensure you get the best fuel economy. In most parts of B.C., the swap from winter tires to all-season or summer tires is already well under way (studded winter tire removal is mandatory by April 30). Winter tires are made with a softer and stickier rubber compound that wears faster and increases fuel consumption at higher temperatures. They also tend to be noisier and you’ll hear them even more, now that you can finally roll down the windows. You may also be dragging around too much junk in the trunk, such as that snow shovel you always pack during the winter months. Unnecessary weight increases fuel consumption and some of that extra weight could be in the form of mud and dirt

on your vehicle’s undercarriage. (Road salt is probably also trapped in that muddy mess, which is a corrosion accelerant that your vehicle’s body doesn’t need.) While you’re poking around in the trunk, take a look under the floor cover. Water leaking into the vehicle tends to accumulate in the lowest spots, or maybe that’s why it’s called a spare-wheel well. If the spare is a conventional tire, check its inflation pressure and, while you’re at it, make sure that the emergency jack and tool kit are also in good working order. An easy check and repair item is lighting. You may need some help confirming that the brake and backup lights are functioning at the rear. Otherwise, it’s a simple walk-around check that should include the turn signals and headlights (both low and high beams) and don’t forget the license plate and those little side marker lights. If you’ve got a vehicle with a headlight (clear plastic) cover that’s showing its age, there are some good products on the market now that help restore clarity. Wiper blades are another easy check and replace item. A buildup of grease or grime on the windshield will also reduce the effectiveness of the wipers. Clean the rubber wiper blade with a soft cloth soaked in the glass

cleaner. In B.C., those windshield wipers typically work harder than anywhere else in Canada and life expectancy can be less than a year. If they’re still streaking, chattering or generally not doing the job – replace them. Getting back to tires, a loaded vehicle driven at highway speeds for prolonged periods in hot weather conditions can be a punishing test for tires and the dreaded blow-out is a real concern. A tire also performs best, lasts longer and provides best fuel economy when its internal pressure is set at a level recommended by the vehicle manufacturer, and checked on a regular basis. The tire decal, with optimal front and rear recommended tire pressures, is usually on the driver’s door or door jam. Using a grade of fuel with a lower octane rating than recommended by the vehicle manufacturer may cause the engine to ping or knock on hard acceleration or when climbing hills, which is not good for the engine! On the other hand, using a higher-octane fuel than your vehicle’s engine needs is generally a waste of money. That said, the pricier fuel may also contain some additional cleaner additives, which is good. Have a great summer and a safe driving vacation.

Things to consider when buying a recreational vehicle Western News Staff

Opportunity for adventure abounds for recreational vehicle owners. With a motor home parked in the driveway, a road trip or instant family getaway is only a few steps away. While RVs can be rented, serious road-trippers often prefer purchasing one so that it can be customized with the features desired and always be at the ready. RVs vary in price depending on the vehicle, and there are a few thing prospective RV owners should know before they begin shopping. First and foremost, drivers who have not previous owned an RV or even stepped inside of one you may have an inaccurate perception of these vehicles. Today's recreational vehicles are much more than meets the eye, and it pays to attend an RV show to become acquainted with the various types of motor homes. This way you will be familiar with the jargon and have a reasonable idea of what you want before going to a dealership. There are various classes of RVs, but the largest ones tend to be the most expensive. Some RVs have an engine and are driven like a bus, while other models hitch to the back of a truck or van. If you will be towing an RV, you must be certain the car or truck doing the towing is equipped to tow a vehicle the weight and size of your particular RV. Some RVs have fixed dimensions, while others expand, either manually or electronically, pushing out walls to provide even more interior room when the RV is parked. RVs have different floor plans, and there are many different models to fit

a buyer's needs. Many RVs are equipped with no frills furnishings, but there are models that feature top-of-theline appliances and fixtures. It's possible to get granite countertops and cherry cabinets in an RV, but such accessories will increase the cost of the vehicle. Upholstered sofas and dining room banquettes may be upgraded to leather. Some RVs have an additional kitchenette built into the exterior of the unit for easy access when barbecuing or cooking at a campsite. How you plan to use the RV should also be considered prior to purchasing one. Will you be spending time cooking meals and sleeping inside, or will it mainly be used as a storage unit for your camping gear? Do you plan on taking extended vacations and desire all the comforts of home? Defining these goals will help you find the right RV for you. Another thing to consider is renting an RV for a day or two to get a feel for driving it and what it is like to spend a night inside. You may be able to determine if you need more or less of a mobile home when you ultimately decide to purchase. Make sure everything works before you drive the RV off of the lot. Repairs can be expensive, and you do not want to be stuck with a lemon when you're on the road. Find out if there are any roadside assistance packages that can be negotiated to offer you peace of mind with your first RV. The decision of whether or not to purchase an RV requires ample forethought. Comparing a number of different models and designs and weighing personal needs can give buyers a good idea of which RV is right for them.

are a good time to check the pressure of the tires. You can reduce the wear and tear of the truck’s tires by rotating them often. Rotating the tires, keeps the tread wear balanced and can really help when slippery and wet conditions occur. A simple rule about rotating your tires is to do it on every other oil change. Doing this consistent basis, will make the tires last longer and allow a comfortable ride for many, many kilometres.

Driving down a gravel road to get to your favourite fishing hole or a day out with your family brings lots of enjoyment. Getting there requires proper tires. Rocks, potholes, and rough terrain all play are part on how your tires perform. The main function of any tire is to provide traction. Having good traction tires helps off-roaders get to where they need to go without being stuck. When shopping for an off-road/on road tire there are a few things to consider. Cheap tires are not the best option because “you get what you pay for” definitely applies here. Some things to consider are high mileage tires and tread wear ratings. Some aggressive mud tires tend to wear a lot quicker than an allterrain tire. The next thing to consider is tire size. You can contact the manufacturer or check tire charts that give you variety of sizes to fit your vehicle. The height of your sidewall is important and should be chosen based on the conditions where you drive your truck most often. If you only drive on the street then a low profile truck tire will be fine, but if you go off-roading then you are going to want more tire in between your rim and the ground. That way you will not bottom out on the rims when the tires encounter rough terrain off-road. The size of the rim is a personal preference. Popular today are the larger sized rims. Just make sure that the rim and truck tire you choose will fit inside the wheel well of the truck, and don’t forget to upgrade your brakes to help stop

What is the Soul and how does it compare to the rest of the market? Well, it falls in size between a compact hatchback car and a small SUV, a true crossover. The two main rivals for this car are the Nissan Cube and Scion XB, but compared to those cars this is a much more polished effort in design and content. The body has been updated with slightly larger dimensions in width and length but the roof has been dropped by a centimetre. The front air intake is much bigger and the headlights look more aggressive. The back has a large black section around the rear bumper to help lift the eye, where the older car had a long, slightly droopy back end. Prices range from $16,995 all the way to $26,995 for the model scene here. That might sound like a lot but this top SX Luxury trim is packed with goodies that would cost a lot more on a compact SUV. It has polished alloy wheels, HID headlamps and LED tail lamps, a huge panoramic sunroof and automatic folding outside mirrors.

Inside What continues to amaze me is just what is offered in a compact vehicle and Kia, in particular, jams more stuff in than anyone else. This top model has heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, leather seats, a big 8-inch navigation screen with backup camera, satellite radio, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, power moon roof and more. Now most buyers will shop in the middle EX trim and it starts at $20,895 also well equipped. One of the main reasons for the popularity of the Soul is the ease of use, meaning older buyers can get into the car thanks to the big doors and slightly higher seats, when compared with a compact car. The back seat is very roomy and has a flat floor for easy access for children. The cargo rear isn’t as big as a compact SUV but for a city runabout it does a great job because there is storage under the floor and the seats fold for more room.

Drive Kia has a two-engine approach to the Soul. The base model gets a 130hp 1.6L 4-cylinder engine and all other trim levels get a larger 2.0L engine with 164hp. The same is true with the transmission; the base has a standard 6-speed manual transmission and all others get a 6-speed auto. The larger 2.0L engine was introduced into the last model but now it has the benefit of an updated chassis to get the most out of the Soul in terms of handling. The body has been strengthened and attention has been placed on noise and vibration from the engine and suspension. This all comes together to make a great city car that can dash in and out of traffic with ease and lets the passengers relax and enjoy the cars amenities. One of the reasons I think this is an alternative to a small SUV is the high seating position, great outward visibility and solid fuel economy, using 8.5L/100km in the city and 6.6L on the highway. The Soul would be just fine in the winter if driven sensibly and equipped with proper winter tires. Not everyone needs all wheel drive; front wheel drive is just fine.

Verdict The Soul is already an award winner and has a dedicated buyer base. In fact, the Soul also won the 2014 ALG Residual Value Award for the subcompact utility class. This means that, the company, ALG believes this Soul will hold its value better than the competition. Yes, this class is small but there is comfort in knowing the Soul isn’t just liked by the initial buyer but by the used car buyer too. If you are in the market for a compact hatchback or small SUV, do yourself a favour and try the Soul. My fully loaded tester was about the same price as a most base model compact SUVs but this runabout has attitude to spare.

When it comes to vehicle maintenance, the rule of two has long reigned among professional automotive technicians and driving safety advocates. In accordance to this rule, drivers replacing important parts in their cars and trucks, such as tires, brakes, shocks and wiper blades, should always do so in pairs. Replacing parts in pairs can ensure vehicles are properly balanced and functioning safely. But it’s not just tires, brakes and other big-ticket components that should be replaced in pairs. Vehicle lighting plays an integral role in keeping drivers and their passengers safe, and motorists should exercise the same caution regarding their vehicles’ headlights, taillights and turn signals that they do when maintaining the rest of their cars and trucks.

Why replace aging headlight bulbs?

Few drivers include headlight bulb replacement in their vehicle maintenance routines. But old headlight bulbs can drastically compromise visibility at night, when drivers’ visual acuity is naturally reduced by as much as 70 per cent. As headlight bulbs age, the effects of exposure to sunlight, ozone and pollution can significantly reduce their light output. According to Philips Automotive, a leading manufacturer of vehicle lighting components, headlight bulbs begin to project significantly less light within two to three years of their initial usage, producing dimmer light outputs that compromise the safety of drivers and their passengers. For example, new headlight bulbs capable of projecting 240-foot beams in front of a vehicle may see that projection dwindle to just 160 feet within

Why replace bulbs two at a time?

In an effort to promote the importance of changing headlight bulbs two at a time, Philips developed the Change In Pairs safety campaign, which aims to educate motorists about the dangers of dimming lights while promoting the many reasons that changing bulbs in pairs makes the road safer for all travelers. Though replacing two headlight bulbs when only one is dimming may seem unwarranted, maintaining a consistent light output in both headlights makes the road safer for drivers, their passengers and oncoming motorists. When only one bulb is replaced, the resulting light output can be both unbalanced and unpredictable, providing inadequate lighting that can compromise driver visibility. In addition, oncoming motorists may experience difficulty seeing vehicles with just one headlight operating at full capacity, and some may even mistake oncoming cars and trucks for motorcycles, creating positioning issues for drivers on both sides of the yellow line.

How can drivers improve visibility?

• Replace worn out wiper blades. Wiper blades need to be changed each season or in threemonth intervals. • Clean interior glass and mirrors. Over time, interior glass can develop a film-like buildup that reduces vision and creates hazy reflections from the sun. • Don’t hang accessories in your vehicle. Fuzzy dice, photos and other items hung on rearview mirrors can prove distracting and block you from seeing the road.
