Nelson By Wendy Kelly Surrounded by family, Kali DeVito creates a homespun wedding in the Kootenays. Kali laughs as she tells me about planning for her wedding, which took place last August at the DeVito property in Blewett. A year and a half of painstaking planning, hours on Pinterest and even a garden grown to supply the flowers. Radiant Wedding Party It’s easy to hear the back-and-forth between Kali and Joel as she kept creating just one more craft and Joel kept wondering when they were just going to get married, already. The day was hot — the images, by local photographer Jacey Paton, show only radiant bride happy groom and the young playful wedding party — they weathered the heat well, using the nearby forest for the “First Look” images, for example. When you see the emotions captured on the faces of the bride, groom and the entire wedding party, it’s obvious that this wedding was an act of love. Romantic, Fun — Definitely Fun Kali describes her wedding as “shabby chic boho — romantic, fun.” “Definitely fun” she says, laughing again. There was a young creative vibe, so prevalent in the Kootenays, making the day one that was more about the people celebrating than about pretense. But that’s not to say it wasn’t beautiful. From the wedding officiant being Joel’s dad, Vince DeVito, to the fact that Kali’s mom actually planted a garden that would bloom in August to provide flowers, the wedding was supported and surrounded by family and friends. Professionally Casual & Chic That is not to say that the wedding was amateur by any means. Kali, an experienced hairdresser and colorist, did her own hair for her wedding. The rest of the bridal party was taken care of by the salon where Kali works, Bijou Salon on Ward Street in Nelson.

The results: Stunning but casual. Perfectly modern. The heirloom ring belonged to Kali’s Mom but in the skilled hands of local jeweller Chris Kolmel, it was redesigned for Kali in a way that captured the past but embraced the future as well. A Community Wedding Comes Together — Perfectly A year and a half in the making, one of the loveliest things to learn about this wedding is how perfectly everything came together — and how it took a village to create this wedding. Though Kali says having less time would perhaps have been a blessing, with so much planning time there was always one more craft to make, one more Pinterest Board to find; she notes with joy all the myriad people who came forward to help make the wedding a Kootenay success. When the flowers bloomed early due to unseasonable weather, three friends came forward to help harvest lavender from yet another friend’s home. A bottle of wine was left as a gift, and Kali was set with gorgeous homegrown flowers. Though Kali is a consummate planner and did much of the planning herself, she couldn’t have ended up with such a completely perfect day without the help of friend and event planner Erin Then. Erin came in two months before the wedding to co-ordinate the event and ensure that everything ran smoothly. The Food — A Moveable Feast The food, too, was a local feast. Literally. Catering done by friends who happen to be professional chefs made for a day filled with gourmet healthy food made with love. One friend supplied salads while another friend of the groom, Dave Shaw, a chef at Louie’s, cooked fish and meat from the Fisherman’s Market on-site and to-order.

The cake, made by a bridesmaid, was covered in flowers, emanating both the warmth and boho style of the wedding day. Cupcakes to go along with the cake were supplied by one of the groom’s father’s friends, and again set the tone for the day with their lovely homespun, yet chic, style. Clothes When you look through the pictures of the DeVito-Hill wedding, the homespun, yet chic, vibe carries through each image. The decor, the food, the smiling faces: everything tied together within that bouquet of casual sophistication. The dress is no exception. Kali says that she had hoped for a lacey dress, but when she tried on the one called “Star” handmade in New York by Hayley Paige, she knew it was the one. A tulle dress with layers of pink and purple, the dress sparkles and lights up Kali’s face in every picture. The dress, as it should, frames the bride perfectly, without overpowering her. It instead acts as a supporting
cast, radiating her joyful energy. Bridesmaids all wore a dress they were comfortable in, and this decision also helped set the tone. They all look beautiful and at ease, happy for their dear friend on her special day. The groomsmens’ outfits were supplied by local menswear shop Baker Street Menwear, and all of their shoes are of course from Vince DeVito Shoes. A Kootenay Success Kali and Joel’s wedding brought together two families, friends, and a whole lot of Kootenay love to create a day that encompassed all that the Kootenays is: sophisticated, friendly, casual and chic, all at the same time. As an example of what a wedding can be in the Kootenays, you can’t get more authentic than that.

boards bring wedding plans to life
Making the wedding of your dreams a reality may require some creativity. It can be challenging to organize all of the creative ideas swimming around in your head, but inspiration boards may be able to help. Inspiration boards, sometimes referred to as idea boards, are commonly used by interior designers, artists, writers and even wedding planners. Such boards can serve a great purpose when starting a new project, especially if all of your creative ideas seem to lack cohesion. Sometimes seeing things together, rather than in bits and pieces on their own, can fuel even more creativity. Inspiration boards can include magazine clippings, photographs, fabric swatches, quotes or literary passages, and color swatches. As the idea board grows, you may find a common denominator among your inspirational elements. This can help determine a theme for your wedding or jumpstart other planning. While poster boards may be more traditional idea boards, creative ideas also can be compiled in binders or scrapbooks, which work especially well at keeping all items organized and concise. Plus, they’re portable, which means you can take a scrapbook to a meeting with a wedding vendor and show him or her your concepts for the wedding.

Later, when photographers, florists and other vendors have been booked, you can attach receipts or agreements to the inspiration board for future reference. This keeps all of your important wedding information in one place rather than requiring you to search through different folders or files for important documents. In addition, if friends or family members ask for advice on vendors and planning their own weddings in the future, you can readily access your inspiration board. To start building your own board or book, take clippings of photos or articles that resonate with you. As you visit bridal shops and other stores, take fabric swatches and pictures of particular looks. Attend bridal shows and take home promotional materials. Remember, inspiration may not always come from bridal-related resources. Anything you come across in your daily life — such as window-shopping at a furniture store or passing an art exhibit — may inspire some creativity. By Valerie Rossi The proposal was largely spontaneous for Rossland’s Dan Grey when a friend’s wedding led him and his lady, Jess, to a palapa with a knockout view located above their temporary home in Sayulita, Mexico. A live music serenade wafted towards the couple on a welcome tropical breeze while Dan searched his pocket for the ring and launched into his unrehearsed proposal. His unexpected words sent Jess into a state of hysterics, but she managed to calm down enough to give her groom-to-be his ‘yes’ before running to the washroom where better light allowed her to more clearly check out her new jewelry. Dan and Jess have built a life on friendship, living in the moment and continuing to take advantage of the year-round recreation offered in Rossland. Though the two come from different parts of the country -- Dan all but a local, having arrived from Britain at five years old, and Jess from Saint Georges, Quebec -- their shared passion for snowboarding and their like-minded attitudes towards friendship brought them together and eventually to the altar this past August 1st, 2015. “I think it’s always been easy to be together,” says Jess. “We never had those moments that make you wonder. It just feels right, and it’s always been like that.” Jess didn’t care where she was going in 2006 as long as it was out west and back to the mountains she had acquainted herself with previously in Golden and Lake Louise. At 29 years old, she scored a job at RossVegas over the phone and set off for Rossland. There, she already had a few personal contacts, including Thom Rodrigue, a friend she had remained in close touch with. Dan, who was 31 at the time, may have been a little hesitant to return to Rossland after initially splitting town after his shared business, Kingdom Boardsports - which would go onto to become RossVegas - folded. Thankfully, the stress of debt was lifted when the shop was picked up by Nelson’s Ripping Giraffe’s owner, who assumed the partners’ debt and saved the young entrepreneurs from a world of financial trouble. “I saved face with at least all the distributors, and that’s how I managed to stay friends with a lot of people in the snowboard industry,” recalled Dan.

Dan’s group, fondly known as “The Kootenay posse,” which included Eric Hill, Mike Turner, Jamie Rizzuto and Jesse Carelli, had already left Whistler and were encouraging Dan to do the same. The timing was perfect; Dan was done with Whistler and with chasing parts in snowboarding films while paying the bills by working just as hard in a kitchen. He left the resort town sunburned, tired, and ready to settle into his former community, find work, and maybe even a girl if the fates aligned. “My life was always kind of all over the place until Jess and I met,” he said. “When we met I had come back to Rossland to leave the flash and glamour of Whistler behind and kind of start thinking about a job, career and family.” As luck would have it, Jess’s roommate was heading back to Quebec, and she needed someone else to help pay rent. A mutual friend (Jason Moll) suggested Dan, and a few months into living together the roommates shared a bowl of popcorn on the couch after a night at the former Nowhere Special Social Lounge in Rossland, and the rest, as they say, was history. Jess and Dan started their relationship based on friendship and maintained that connection over nearly a decade before exchanging vows. Marriage was not originally in the plan but eventually became a natural choice for the pair. “My parents had been divorced since I was a baby so I grew up not believing in marriage but it kind of grew on me, and I was hinting at it a lot, and I wanted it,” said Jess. Conversely, Dan’s parents, Rossland’s Rob and Jane Grey, had proven a lifetime commitment was possible and perhaps that helped the idea along. Picking a venue for their big day was an easy task; the pair had considered Mexico based on their fond vacation memories, but a destination wedding would limit whether or not some people could attend. “I thought it would be a good thing if my family could see where I’ve been for the past nine years,” added Jess. And it was nice for Dan, too, who wanted to reassure her family that she was marrying a decent person. The specific setting decided on was Rossland’s Happy Valley, in Steve and Krista Podwin’s backyard. With a 12 | WEST KOOTENAY BRIDE |2016
beautiful backdrop highlighted with natural, romantic colours and soft tones offset by raw details like burlap and wood, a better choice couldn’t have been conceived. Jess wore an ivory slim A-line dress with a sweetheart neckline and corset back. Her elegant look was pulled together with her late grandmother’s ring and a vintage pearl necklace, restrung by Dan’s mom. Tiny details added by family and friends reminded the couple just how lucky they are to have such caring people in their lives. Jess’ mom Louise Boucher and stepdad Guy Levesques walked her to the altar with care. A decade may have gone by, but Dan’s heart sped when he watched Jess walk down the rose petal aisle. And though there were outspoken guests, the couple didn’t hear a thing but one another’s vows. The powerful and even heated moment then cooled off with a comedic sand ceremony - thankfully saved by bridesmaid Rachel Newton, who stepped in to open up the sand containers that had still been firmly clasped shut. The laughs continued with Jess and Dan attempting to pour the sand into a tiny vessel (without spilling!) during the symbolic exchange. Earlier that day Jess was pleasantly shocked by a gift of a fleet of hot cars rounded out with a 1985 motorhome, dubbed the “Weddingbago,” which was more of a whimsical and practical hit than an ode de trailer trash. The rocker at heart relaxed with her girls at her side, 80s rock playing loudly, champagne all around and enough room for her mom and brother Eric Poulin to ride along for fun. After a post-ceremony joy ride in a ‘64 1/2 Mustang convertible racing alongside friends stuffed into a 2010 Dodge Challenger SRT8 and 2008 convertible beamer, the newlyweds couldn’t wait to spend the rest of the night with their hand-picked guests. The party included a good showing of lifelong friends, most cultivated in the snowboard community, and a sprinkling of local family and Jess’ family, some who had made their first trip out to B.C. for the occasion. Her mom and stepdad, neither of whom speak a word of English, got by with a French emcee and lovingly-crafted cards that translated the vows and reception highlights.

“That circle of people pretty much all came from snowboarding for me,” shared Dan. “Because that’s when we had the most real times together, especially in this place, you have so many good days on the hill it sort of builds pretty strong bonds with people.” Those friendships continue to develop and shape over epic powder days, “steep and deep trees” and hikes in search for fresh tracks. “For a bunch of old farts we still ride pretty hard,” he said. “I mean, our crew, we’re in our late 30s and 40s, and we still charge it,” he added. “There’s not as much spinning and jumping and hucking anymore; it’s more powder and good runs without injuries.” Only now, it’s not his girlfriend at his side riding just as hard, but his wife: his better half and his best friend.
“When I proposed I was not nervous at all, there were no butterflies,” he recalled. But with all the romantic ingredients on hand, he didn’t think about getting down on one knee until he later re-proposed on a local trail looking down at their home town. Simple pleasures and solid friendships continue to be what’s important to the couple, who still share popcorn on the couch together but are settling into marriage nicely, finishing each other’s sentences and poking fun at each other whenever the opportunity arises.

Engagement ring purchases are usually a solo endeavor, with the groom having an idea of the ring style and color his bride-to-be prefers. But couples usually shop for their wedding ring sets together, and such excursions can be special and meaningful. Like many decisions couples make when planning their weddings, choosing rings comes down to personal preference. There are no steadfast rules when it comes to purchasing wedding rings, but some guidelines can make shopping far easier. As couples prepare to shop for rings, it can help for each person to list the attributes he or she would like in a ring. This should include the type of metal, color, width, and even cost. Couples may find they have different preferences, and this is perfectly fine, as wedding rings do not have to match. A wedding band should complement the engagement ring but not be a perfect match. An ornate engagement ring might look better with a simple band, and vice-versa. Similarly cut gemstones also can complement an engagement ring. If the bride chooses to wear both her engagement ring and wedding band together on the same finger, she should choose a band that will accommodate the curves of uniquely shaped engagement rings.

Couples can make some early choices even before they visit jewelry stores. Narrow down your options so the experience will not be overwhelming. When the time comes to shop, give yourselves at least two months to browse and then choose the rings you like best. Lifestyle and daily routine should be considered at all times. These rings will be worn daily, and no one wants to fret about a ring being too delicate to stand up to everyday wear and tear. Also, think long-term. Trendy rings can be fun, but will they still seem like such a good idea when you are celebrating your twentieth wedding anniversary? When getting rings sized, both the bride and groom should go when their fingers aren’t swollen from exercise or early
in the morning after they may have retained fluid. Shopping should take place when hands aren’t too hot or cold. This will allow the best size so the bands fit comfortably and will have enough wiggle room should fingers swell or shrink a little bit. People can protect their investments by keeping the ring on as much as possible and only removing it when engaging in demanding physical activity or when working with chemicals. Store the ring in a safe spot when you are not wearing it so you are less likely to lose it. Wedding rings can be purchased from any number of retailers. Just be sure the rings are of good quality and sellers stand by the craftsmanship.

By Amy Robillard A Kootenay wedding is often a big ol’ party: A celebration that marks a special day between two people who want to shout their love from the rooftops – Or in Nate Fischer and Amanda Francis’ case Rafters, the rustic après-ski lounge at RED Mountain Resort in Rossland. So how did this 29-year-old West Vancouver gal find herself marrying this 34-year-old Trail boy at his childhood ski mountain? The love story starts six years ago at a hockey rink in Vancouver when Amanda went to a friend’s hockey game and Nate was on the team. They were immediately drawn to each other. He loved how her eyes sparkled when she smiled, and Nate could always make Amanda laugh – still does. The two had wanted a destination wedding but realized many of the important people in their lives wouldn’t be able to attend. After looking at venues near where the couple currently live in Vancouver, they decided to look closer to Nate’s hometown of Trail. RED Mountain Resort offered exactly what they were looking for. It was accessible to Nate’s family in Trail, and was in fact, a destination wedding for them and many of their guests from Vancouver. Plus, Nate and Amanda got engaged on a chairlift at Sunpeaks Resort near Kamloops, so they thought it would be fitting to get married at a ski hill.

Looking for a low-stress, high-fun wedding, both bride and groom didn’t want their wedding to be a one-day event, and encouraged their guests to make a weekend of it by arriving the week before the August 29th date. “It was great to have our guests stay at the ski hill and enjoy the area,” Amanda says, adding that her family finally saw the beauty and personality of the area. “My family grew up skiing at Whistler and RED reminded my Dad of what Whistler used to be back in the day before it became so commercialized.” Under dramatic cloudy skies, the couple’s special day started in the timber-framed house they rented on the ski hill. Scoffing at tradition, family and friends were invited to enjoy the morning, getting ready and toasting the couple before the ceremony. “We had many of our guests come by to say congratulations and wish us luck – it was really a nice way to start the day.” Accompanied by over 125 guests and an eight member bridal party, Amanda and Nate were married outside on the grass at the base of the mountain. To include their large families, they asked their siblings to marry them, and in true Amanda and Nate form, the ceremony was anything but somber or ordinary. “My step sister sang parts of our vows and our other siblings were scattered around the audience shouting things out. We did have a justice of the peace present, but she was only there to make sure everything we needed to say was said,” Amanda relays as she remembers what she describes as, “the best day ever!” The dinner was catered by local chef extraordinaire, John Premier – locally famous for his mouth-watering sweets available at the Rossland cafe, The Grind; and servers were supplied by RED Mountain’s winter staff. “RED mountain had everything covered and their staff was so fun and capable of dealing with such a large crowd,” says Amanda recounting the staff taking selfies with the guests and lighting sparklers.

The traditional glass clinking was barred from the event and instead, a giant origami paper fortune teller (a take on the childhood game where paper is folded and numbers are used to predict your future) was used to ensure the bride and groom had their lips locked throughout the evening. Challenges such as dance-offs and finding undergarments in fewer than 30 seconds had guests dancing on tables, and bridesmaids removing their own delicates. After two hours of heartfelt and hilarious speeches, the crowd moved upstairs to Rafter’s – the watering hole all

Asking Amanda if she had anything to add about her and Nate’s special day, she had this to say, “Nate is my best friend and we wanted a wedding where we got to spend the day showing our friends and family how much fun we have together – I think we achieved that.” B

Easy ways to trim wedding costs
Couples planning their weddings realize pretty quickly just how expensive weddings can be. Depending on where couples tie the knot, the costs can stretch into the tens of thousands of dollars, leaving many young men and women to scramble to find ways to trim costs without trimming quality. Many couples look for ways to cut wedding costs, and couples facing that very dilemma should know that there are several ways to save money but still host the wedding of their dreams. Guest list Guest lists can consume a significant portion of couples’ wedding budgets. When compiling the guest list, couples should keep in mind that guests will need save-the-date cards, invitations, catered meals (including cocktail hour, dinner and dessert), drinks, and gifts (including hotel gift bags and wedding favors). So the cost per guest will be more than just the per person cost of the meal couples negotiate with their caterer. Couples who can pare their guests lists down to just family and close friends can save a substantial amount of money without affecting their ceremonies. Reception A couple’s wedding reception also will chew up a lot of their wedding budgets. But there are ways to reduce the costs of receptions, too. Couples planning on having a morning wedding can shift their receptions from the evening to the afternoon, when the cost per meal will be considerably less. Afternoon receptions also can be alcohol-free, saving couples even more money. If a nighttime reception is a must-have, choose a limited cash bar instead of an open bar. Limited cash bars often provide guests with free beer and house wine while guests who prefer liquor or mixed
drinks must pay for their own libations. If you are planning an outdoor wedding reception, you may even be able to provide your own alcohol, which can save considerable amounts of money. Couples also can trim reception costs by choosing the least expensive meal package. Packages often differ greatly in price but are not always so different with regard to their menus. If you find the packages offered by your venue are similar, choose the least expensive option. Arrangements Floral arrangements are a big and potentially expensive part of many couples’ weddings. The bride needs her bouquet, as do her bridesmaids. In addition, many couples decorate their ceremony space with flowers, and of course reception table centerpieces typically include flowers as well. When working with your florist, request in-season flowers, which will cost considerably less than exotic flowers that are out of season. In addition, let your florist know your budget and ask that he or she recommend flowers that won’t break the bank. Gifts While it’s become customary to prepare gift bags for guests staying in hotels, couples should not go overboard with such gifts. Gift bags need not include more than a snack, a bottle of water and a homemade thank-you card. Couples also should not break the bank with regard to reception gifts, which have also become a standard offering. Keep such gifts simple and inexpensive, even opting for homemade gifts if you and your future spouse are skilled with crafts.
