Women inBusiness Publisher’s message
to our local Women in Business
You have heard the saying “If you want something done, ask a busy person.” I can add to that – if you want something done and done well, ask the busiest woman you know. Take for instance, the women at the Campbell River Mirror: design, sales, editorial and front office. These busy women all work together daily to create quality publications for our readers to enjoy. As you read through these pages, you will see many women you recognize. You will also most likely read about women you have never met, and I’m betting you will have the occasional “Oh, my, I had no idea....” You will also find some very interesting information on how to address issues such as creating a healthy life balance, financial planning, or keeping active and staying fit without interrupting your schedule. Often, we tend to scan the news for the highlights, but I promise you, for this year’s Women in Business edition, you will want to set aside some time, grab your favourite beverage, choose a comfortable chair and take some time to read through these pages to learn more about the wonderful, successful women working right here in our community.

Women inBusiness Is your business idea feasible? It is often difficult to figure out how to research your business idea, especially if you have never been in business for yourself. You will need to decide if your business idea has profit potential. Use the following twenty steps as a guide to help you determine if your business idea is viable. There may be some questions you are unable to answer or answer fully. This is an indication tablish why your customer might buy your product of the areas of your proposed business you don’t know or service over that of enough about and a great launching your competitor. pad for your market research.
THE STEPS
ness or organization, assess what industries they are in, what kind of company they are, how long they have been in business, how many employees they have, annual sales, what department would be interested in your offer, and who their customers are.
1. CREATE A CUSTOMER PROFILE Your customers might be consumers or retail stores, wholesalers or manufacturers, government or other institutions. List as many points as you can about who you think will buy your product. If you are selling to a consumer market, list their age, gender, marital status, and income, and try to describe their lifestyle. If you expect to sell to another busi-
2. LIST AND DESCRIBE THE FEATURES AND BENEFITS OF YOUR PRODUCTS AND SERVICES State how these features will benefit your customer. Define the features of your idea and determine what these features do for your customer. You will create a list of the selling points that you can use in your advertising, your brochures, and in your sales presentation. This will help you es-

3. DEFINE YOUR GEOGRAPHIC AREA Are selling to your neighborhood? British Columbia? Globally? By defining where you are going to sell, you will likely be able to figure out how many potential customers are located in this area. If you are selling to a large geographic area, you will likely need a good deal of money, marketing, and resources. Defining this area makes it much easier to figure out what your needs are going to be. It will help focus your area of concentration when conducting market research. 4. WHO ARE YOUR COMPETITORS? Once you determine who and where your customers are, you must determine whom you have to share them with. Find out if similar products are carried in retail outlets. Once identified, search for information on competitors in industry directories, either in print or online databases.
5. WHAT PRICE DO THEY CHARGE? Establish what your competitors charge and list the selling points of their product or service. Try to find your industry’s wholesale and retail prices. 6. WHAT PRICE CAN YOU CHARGE? Determining how competitive you can be is a big step toward establishing how feasible your idea is. If your product is superior to your competition and your market is not very price sensitive, then you may be able to charge considerably more than your competition. If you are selling to retailers or wholesalers, you will have to leave enough room for others to mark your products up. 7. DEFINE YOUR UNIQUE SELLING POINTS (USP) What is unique about your offer that would benefit your customer? There may be something about your product, your price, the friendliness and speed of your service, your hours of operation, your level of quality, the skills of your employees, or other aspects of your business. 8. IDENTIFY TRENDS IN YOUR MARKET OR INDUSTRY Knowing trends in your market or industry will help you determine where it’s going and how your business can take advantage. Check business and industry/trade magazines for recent articles. Some libraries have a business periodicals index to help you find these articles.

Women inBusiness 9. ANALYZE YOUR GROWTH POTENTIAL Is your industry or market growing or declining? Are trends or new fads peaking or declining? Generally, you will be more successful as part of a growing market. Check business and industry/trade magazines for recent articles. 10. HOW WILL YOUR CUSTOMERS KNOW YOU EXIST? So now you know who your customers are, where they are and why they will buy your product. How are you going to communicate your offer to them? Will you rely on having a good location? How will you promote or advertise? 11. ESTIMATE SALES FOR THE FIRST YEAR Base your estimates on the size of your market, level of competition, your price, your plans for promotion, and trends in your industry. Create a pessimistic, an optimistic, and a conservative forecast. 12. GOVERNMENT APPROVALS There may be some extensive or expensive regulations involved with your type of business. Bizpal (www.bcbizpal. ca) can assist you with determining municipal, provincial, and federal regulations and licensing requirements affecting your business. 13. MANUFACTURING, PURCHASING, OR PRODUCTION State how you will make or acquire the goods, or produce and deliver the services, you plan to sell. Use your sales forecast to help you plan this part of your operation. Think about potential growth in future years. 14. CAPACITY OF YOUR OPERATION IN THE FIRST YEAR How big will your operation be? What is the limit of what you can produce, stock, service, and sell. Can you meet your sales forecasts? Have you taken future growth into consideration?
15. FULFILLMENT How does your customer get their order and how do you get paid? 16. POTENTIAL SUPPLIERS Your concept may rely heavily on the reliability of your raw material suppliers and/or your subcontractors. How dependent will you be? Figure out who your suppliers will likely be and try to find back-up suppliers. 17. RESOURCES YOU’LL REQUIRE List the employees, floor space, leasehold improvements, equipment, vehicles, inventory, supplies, and services you will require to open your business. Estimate the costs of each item on your list. You will need this list to determine your start up costs.
20. MONTHLY CASH FLOW FORECAST FOR YOUR FIRST YEAR A cash flow forecast shows the critical “whens” of cash coming in and cash going out during a certain month. Preparing a monthly cash flow forecast provides you with the opportunity to show dollar figures, representing revenues and expenses, in the month the business expects to collect and spend the cash. Cash flow can demonstrate the need for cash injections at critical periods when sales are lower in seasonal businesses. Source: http://smallbusinessbc.ca
18. RESOURCES YOU WILL FINANCE, LEASE,OR RENT You will probably not pay for large purchases outright, but will instead lease, rent, or finance these items. You will need to estimate your monthly payments to help you prepare a cash flow worksheet. 19. FINANCIAL STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES How much of your own money do you have for this business? What assets can you use as collateral to secure a loan? Do you already own the vehicles, computer equipment, or tools needed to start your business? Do you have family, friends or others who are prepared to invest in your business? Do you have a strong personal credit rating?

Blaney builds on past work experience in new role as MP By Lindsay Chung
Curiosity, passion for her country and for her region and timing all came together in the fall of 2015 when Rachel Blaney ran in the federal election and was chosen by voters as the NDP Member of Parliament for North Island-Powell River. “Part of the reason I wanted to run is because I really am passionate about the country and wanted to be in a position where I could make a difference,” said Blaney, sitting in her Campbell River constituency office, which she shares with North Island MLA Claire Trevena. “I think historically, the reason why I did it was because I had a strong relationship with a woman who passed away a little while ago, Fran Jones, who was an
incredible leader in Campbell River. She used to talk to me all the time about women in politics and how women are still under-represented and that we need to stand up and do that because young women need to see more women in politics so they can begin to envision that for themselves.” “And also because I’m just nuts about federal politics,” she added, laughing. “You have to have a certain passion for it because it really does absorb your life a lot. This is who you become.” Blaney has lived and worked on Vancouver Island for more than 20 years and has lived in Campbell River for close to 18 years. She has worked as an employment officer for

was in immigration, and that is a largely federal responsibility and I could see the impact that policy would have directly on people on the ground, so that had a rather large impact on me as well, just understanding that when you make those kinds of decisions, you have to be thoughtful because how that decision rolls out in the communities across Canada is very important,” she said. Blaney has been asked to run for different levels of politics for a long time, but she didn’t start to consider it until her children started getting older. Blaney has a 30-year-old stepdaughter and two sons who are 15 and 17.

The Centre grew seven-fold under her leadership, expanding services throughout the North Island and twice winning the Chamber of Commerce’s Notfor-Profit of the Year award. She also gained a lot of valuable perspective in her previous work. “The work I did before this

Women inBusiness Custom Contouring
strategies to reduce extra weight Submitted by Karen McMillan Ideal Protein Coach at Custom Contouring Body Spa
There are many programs with different ideas about the best path to health and fitness. Many people follow the “old” adage EAT Right and Exercise –and they are right to a degree. Healthy diet and daily exercise will keep your body nourished and your muscles, bones and organs strong and MAINTAIN your current health and size. However, there are strategies to use to reduce extra weight. Eat within an hour of waking. Think of it like turning the lights on in the morning to get yourself going for the day. Pick a good combination of carbohydrate, fat and protein, in a correct serving size that will carry you longer, stabilize your blood sugars and provide nutrition for your body to function. Learn how to eat right for you, for your lifestyle changes, to loss fat and to maintain your health long term. When you starve your body and then overeat your body stores the food to survive; you will not lose fat!!! Read labels! Be aware of the ingredients in your foods. Labels show hidden sugars and fats. Keep a journal of the foods you eat and calculate when and how much sugar, fats and carbs you are consuming in a day. There is a chemical reaction (craving) that happens in the body when fats, sugars and carbohydrates are eaten in combination. When food is consumed the body puts it into one of three categories – fat - carbohydrate or protein. Note: When you eat 100 grams
of meat, your protein intake is only about 15 grams. A 100 gram piece of meat contains 65 grams of water, connective tissue and saturated fats and 15 grams of protein. Your body will assimilate only about 10 to 12 grams of the 15 grams of protein. Calculate half of your body’s lean mass then consume that number in grams of protein to maintain your muscle mass. BMI and BMR are not the same thing. Your BMI is Body Mass Index the measure of body fat based on height and weight. The formula is BMI=kg/m2. A BMI of 25.0 or more is overweight. A healthy range is 18.524.9. BMI applies to most adults 1865. Canadian Diabetes Association BMI does not take into account whether the weight is carried as muscle or fat. BMR is Base Metabolic Rate - the number of calories you burn at rest. This number varies from person to person and could change in an individual due to different variables. Analyse your body composition. Measure your weight. Know the breakdown of your weight - (fat%, lean mass and hydration) Figure out what your Body Mass Index and BMR are. See your family practitioner regularly to make sure you’re on the right path to good health. Some medications are administered based on weight and may need to be adjusted in strength or dosage. Once you have reached your goal have an evaluation with your physician and then increase your activity.

Talk to North Island College if you want to
break into business North Island College has proven to be an invaluable tool for women who deciding to get into business or upgrade their training so they’re are positioned to progress in the business field. “Many female business students returning to school come to us to update or develop their skills,” said Christiana Wiens, in communications at NIC. “They start with accounting, marketing, or software courses, or come to us as entrepreneurs with specific business ideas, wanting to know how to take their product to market.” Women who dip in for practical skills often keep going and move onto the Business Administration certificate, diploma, and de-
gree programs. Each program is designed to feed into each other, allowing students to earn two employable credentials, co-op work experience and, if they are inclined, international study before getting their degree. Linda Jay, a business management instructor with NIC, said all the courses contain the same degree of difficulty and rigour as those found at University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University. The Campbell River economy began to shift roughly 20 years ago away from high-paying resource-sector jobs. Many people came out of the forest industry needing re-training for other occupations, at the same time as the federal govern-

local success
Kelsey Anglin believes global citizenship starts at home. The NIC alumni says the personalized attention and increased exposure to international opportunities that she received as a student widened her horizons and launched her career as a commercial banker. She credits instructor Nick Robinson for her involvement in two international exchanges, first at the Warsaw School of Economics in Poland, and in a subsequent year at Kapiolani Community College in Hawaii. Robinson helped her obtain an Irving Barber Scholarship to fund her international experience, and gave her valuable advice and direction to ensure she got the most out of her exchanges. Anglin was in Poland for six months studying economics and international business, living in a dorm that housed 600 students from across Europe, North America, and Asia. This experience, along with her Hawaiian exchange, helped build her confidence communicating across cultures. After graduating from NIC, she went to work at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC), quickly propelling through the ranks. In early 2015, she was promoted to Commercial Banking Manager, with a territory that extends from Qualicum to Port Hardy. She splits her time between CIBC’s Campbell River and Comox Valley branches on Vancouver Island. “This position would not have been offered to me had I not had a business degree,” she said explaining that the opportunities she received at NIC were invaluable
to her career. “The international experience and the cultural diversity on my resume is massive.” According to the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE), the skills gained through international studies are highly sought-after in today’s economy. Anglin’s international experience gave her a new way of looking at herself and the world. Her experience in Poland was especially instrumental in broadening her understanding of the global marketplace. As a commercial banking manager, she is able to take this understanding to the local level, building diverse relationships in the community to foster a thriving business environment. “My job is not a job everyone gets at a young age. It really is a destination position,” she says. “The clients are special. When you’re talking to an owner about their business, it’s exciting because it’s their baby. It’s a real privilege to be part of that.” Her experience travelling internationally has enriched her appreciation for the North Island. After travelling thousands of miles from home, she is happy to have her feet planted firmly in her hometown. As a lifetime resident of the North Island, she enjoys a worklife balance that includes hunting, fishing, and fitness. She volunteers with Ducks Unlimited as an advocate for wildlife conservation and the preservation of wetlands and estuaries, and is an active member of the Young Professionals of Campbell River. business plan Planning for Success You’ve no doubt heard the expression, “Failing to plan is planning to fail.” Many entrepreneurs write a business plan only when they need to secure startup financing. However, your plan is far more than a document for banks and investors to read; it’s an invaluable roadmap for launching and growing your business. In order to put your business concept on paper, you need to think through and research the many factors that are needed to make sure your business is a success. With a plan, not only can you spot potential weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, your plan can help you make informed decisions about your venture before you commit yourself legally or financially. Here, we’ve summarized the key sections that you’ll find in a business plan. The Seven Key Sections of a Business Plan 1. Improve your business “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” The adage is especially true in an ever more competitive business world, where strong relationships can make a direct contribution to your bottom-line. Entrepreneurs rarely make enough time to network and some even see going out for a coffee with a business associate as a waste of time. But, building a mutually beneficial business network should be a priority for every business owner, says Bonnie Elliot, Partner, BDC Consulting. “You need to understand it as an investment, not a cost,” Elliot says. “Relationships are brutally important and extremely helpful.” She says strong
networking skills
business relationships can lead to new customers, improved management skills and the discovery of new ideas. Elliot recommends a few strategies to help entrepreneurs improve their networking skills. 1. Make a plan A frequent mistake is to approach networking in an ad-hoc
Celebrating the Women in our business!
way, Elliot says. “It shouldn’t be an accident that you are attending an event. You’ve planned to be there and you have a specific goal—for example, to schedule 3 follow-up meetings.” At the beginning of the year, when working on their business plan, entrepreneurs should also look at their networking strategy
and answer questions such as: Who do I want to meet on a regular basis? With whom do I want to do business with this year? At the end of the year, assess how you did in meeting your goals and how relationships with people in your network helped your business. 2. Get started A rule of thumb is to ask around and see what type of activities your peers are attending. Workshops, conferences and trade shows are excellent ways of meeting new people and offer terrific opportunities for business development. Another easy way is to check out the events scheduled by your local chamber of commerce.
Eleisha Mack, owner of Wish Want Wear, opened her consignment business in March of 2013 in the Dogwood Plaza and has grown her business twice since then and is now in a larger location on Pier Street. Her love of fashion and 2nd hand clothing growing up has given her the opportunity to share this with everyone she comes in contact with. Wish Want Wear is operated by the community bringing in their clothing and having them go through the consignment process. Items that do not sell are then donated and distributed back into our community through organizations such as Rose Harbour, Second to None Thrift Store and Radiant Life Church, just to name a few. Having Wish Want Wear has been a dream come true and Eleisha is grateful for the community support.

In trying to find good support, Christa and husband Peter discovered Brother Sewing Machines and ventured into a 6 needle embroidery machine. It was love at first stitch. Sadly an expensive ferry ride was the only way to get sales, support and service for Brother Machines as there was no dealer on Vancouver Island. And sew..... Island Sewing began. The business got busy and a store front in Comox was established. 5 years later Comox was thriving, but the evolution of business called for an expansion! June 9th 2015 marked Island Sewing’s Willow Point Location Grand Opening. Christa, Peter, Debbie, Karen, Jenna & Danielle represent the Island Sewing family.

Women inBusiness Women entrepreneurs face unique challenges in starting and growing their business. Confidence issues, lack of access to networks and mentors, a lower level of business training and management experience and challenges with work-life balance can affect women in all stages of business and prevent them from reaching their economic potential. For over 20 years, Women’s Enterprise Centre (WEC) has provided services designed to help women overcome these barriers. The non-profit has offices in Victoria, Vancouver and Kelowna and offers business loans, skills training, advice, mentors, resources and a supportive community to women across the province. Funded by Western Economic Diversification Canada, WEC exists so all aspiring and existing women business owners in BC can be full contributors to the economy, and the organization’s impact over the past two decades is remarkable. Since its inception, WEC has: • Provided business loans to
over 550 BC businesses, which has helped generate almost $1.4 billion in economic activity and has created or maintained over 2,000 jobs in BC. • Conducted almost 56,000 free business advisory sessions to help women address their business challenges, develop start-up and growth strategies and create an impact in their communities. • Trained 22,700 entrepreneurs in 1,740 workshops to give them the practical skills to run a business in key areas such as marketing, financial management, business growth and HR. • Matched 852 women entrepreneurs with mentors – experienced small business owners who offer advice, guidance and support – since launching its mentoring program in 2007. WEC credits its supportive community of partners, volunteers, storytellers and mentors for its success, noting that the majority of its volunteers begin as clients. “Many women initially come to us for a business loan or advisory services. challenges and start to grow, they are empowered to become leaders in their own business and community,” says Dawn McCooey, Skills Development Manager for Women’s Enterprise Centre in the Victoria office. “Their real-world knowledge and experience is invaluable for other women in business.” On average, WEC partners with over 90 organizations a year to bring relevant training, events and mentors to communities all over BC where local demand exists. This allows WEC to service the diverse needs
of women in the various regions throughout the province. Over the years, WEC has been recognized with awards for its accomplishments, knowledge of entrepreneurship and small business support. But McCooey says the real reward is watching their clients succeed. “Our clients are being recognized for their work and leadership and serving as role models for the next generation.” For more information on Women’s Enterprise Centre, visit womensenterprise.ca.

Overall, 90% of women-owned SMEs are in the services sector, compared with 70% of those owned by men. Regionally, women-owned businesses were most common in Eastern Canada, with Atlantic Canada leading the way, and Quebec in second place. In
sion. While the majority of female business owners have more than ten years of ownership or management experience, they have slightly less experience than their male counterparts. Interestingly, female SME owners are more likely to be highly educated (see Chart 4 on page21). They are also slightly more likely (25%) to be born outside of Canada than male owners (20%).

Despite being smaller, female-owned SMEs are slightly more likely than their male counterparts to have engaged in an innovation activity in the past three years. The most common type of innovation is a new or significantly improved good or service (a product innovation). Women business owners seemed to be less likely to be pursuing other growth-enhancing strategies than men. Female owned SMEs are less likely to be engaged in exporting. Only about 5% of female-owned SME’s are exporters, compared to roughly 10% for all SMEs in the sample. This is perhaps not surprising given that women-owned SMEs are far more likely to be in the domestically-oriented services
sector. Women-owned businesses are also slightly less likely to seek financing than male owned businesses. The main reason cited for not seeking financing, which was similar for men, is that they did not need it. Finally, in contrast to the self-employment data, the share of SME’s owned by women has not shifted much over the past decade. Only 16% of SME’s in the 2011 survey were majority-owned by women, the same share as in 2004. In fact, Industry Canada cited in a 2010 report that the gender

distribution of SME ownership changed very little between 2001 and 2007. While motivations can help explain the different characteristics of women entrepreneurs, they also influence the decision to become an entrepreneur in the first place. ...continued on page 21

Women inBusiness Juggling Juggling a career and motherhood is the reality for many women in Campbell River area workplaces and businesses. Ashley Belanko lives that reality every day as a co-owner of Fusilli Grill and a mother of four young children. “It’s definitely interesting,” she says. “You always seem to be pulled in so many different directions.” But after 16 years in business and now 11 years as a parent, the mother of three boys and one girl aged 4, 8, 9 and 11, has a clear idea of what constitutes her biggest challenge. “Time,” she says. “Just trying to find the best way in a day to split the time up.” It requires some creativity and it involves making the family part of the business. But Belanko credits her business partner Executive Chef David Prevost and their staff for creating an environment that accommodates family needs into the workings of the business. “All the staff know them (the children) and Chef David is great with them,” Belanko says.

a career and motherhood Belanko says the kids learn valuable life lessons from being around their business mother. “To see me working hard and have a passion for something and not just doing it for the money,” she says. “And just knowing that when you really enjoy something, to really strive for it even though there are struggles along the way.” The role women play in society and within their own households has changed dramatically over the last halfcentury. According to Pew Research Center, in 1960 just 10.8 percent of married mothers were the primary earners in households that included children under the age of 18. That figure rose steadily over the next 50 years, reaching 40.4 percent by 2011. Ashley Belanko, co-owner of Fusilli Grill
Juggling a career and motherhood is difficult for any woman, but the transition to wearing two hats can prove an especially difficult adjustment for new mothers. Here is a handful of tips for new mothers about to embark on the challenging task of juggling a career and a growing family: Carefully consider career decisions. Some new mothers respond to motherhood by making changes with regard to their careers. When making career decisions as new motherhood is approaching or after it arrives, make a list of the pros and cons to each decision and the motives behind each decision you might make. Avoid going overboard at the office. Juggling a career and new motherhood won’t just have an impact at the office. Part of making a successful transition from working professional to working mother is recognizing that adjustments need to be made at home as well.

Women inBusiness Jody Wilson-Raybould Canada’s Attorney General had big impact as member of We Wai Kai Nation council By Lindsay Chung
In 1983, Jody Wilson-Raybould’s father told Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau that his two daughters (who were 14 and 12 at the time) both wanted to be prime minister. Bill Wilson, a First Nations activist, was speaking at a First Ministers’ Conference in his role as vicepresident of the Native Council of Canada, and according to old video footage, the reaction to this was laughter. But fast forward to 2016, and WilsonRaybould, the Liberal MP for Vancouver Granville, has a very prominent role in the current Prime Minister Trudeau’s Cabinet — that of attorney general and minister of justice.
Wilson-Raybould, or Puglaas (her Native name, which means “woman born to noble people”), served on the council for the We Wai Kai Nation (Cape Mudge Band) for two terms. While serving on council, WilsonRaybould was instrumental in helping her community develop a Land Code and to move out from under the Indian Act, according to a statement the We Wai Kai Nation released in early November when Wilson-Raybould was appointed as Canada’s attorney general and minister of justice. Wilson-Raybould was also key in developing a financial administration law (establishing transparency and accountability through a regulatory

Our promise to you, our customer, is to give you knowledgeable and gracious service to access books you are looking for in our store and beyond. We have books for every age and every interest, and if we don’t, we’ll do our best to get it for you. We hope to introduce you to new authors and ideas, and in turn listen and learn from all of you. We want Coho Books to be an integral part of the Campbell River Community. See you soon at our new location.

Kimberley Preston Stevens is a proud Campbell Riverite. Raised here in Campbell River while her parents purchased and operated Preston Jewellers in the Discovery Inn. Kimberley is a third generation jeweller, who works closely with her father in the day-to-day running of the business. “This is a great business to be in. We help people of all backgrounds celebrate so many special occasions. Imagine a job where you talked about birthdays, anniversaries and milestone moments every day. I love the idea of helping a customer find that perfect item that ultimately turns into their families’ heirloom and personal story. It’s all very romantic. nontraditional occupations
It’s important to remember how far women have come in achieving equality with men, especially in the workplace. While women have continued to shine in the traditionally female-dominated sectors, caring for, educating, and helping others, there has also been a recent rise in women taking on nontraditional occupations. Here at The Campbell River Mirror, our office is made up mainly women (only six male employees). And we are proud to have eleven amazing women at the helm of this community’s newspaper. There has always been an unfortunate under-representation of women in media, business, and politics. But things are beginning to look up. Did you know that women premiers now lead the provinces of British Columbia and Alberta? Christy Clark has been governing B.C. since March 2011 and Rachel Notley is head of the government in Alberta (the second female premier in a row). The Campbell River area has a strong tradition of women in politics. Provincial MLA CLaire Trevena was first elected to the B.C. legislature in 2005. Federally, Rachel Blaney was a strong winner in last October’s general election and has been serving as Member of Parliament for North Island-Powell River. It’s no wonder political parties understand the value of female leaders. They are seen as credible and innovative. Many people believe that they
will be more attentive to social issues, such as the preservation of the public health system and improvements in education. Municipally, city council has had a strong female presence with the current council consisting of three women: Michelle Babchuk, Colleen Evans and Marilyn Wright. Meanwhile, other less traditional occupations, such as firefighting, trucking, and auto repair are increasingly practiced by women. With such a high demand in B.C. for skilled tradespeople, now is the perfect time for women to consider a career in the trades. Tradeswomen of all ages are finding challenges, independence, good pay, and job satisfaction. At the end of the day, choosing a profession is a personal choice. Every industry has its value, and every person (male or female) has their own likes and dislikes. Whether women are finding themselves in ‘traditional’ or ‘non-traditional’ jobs, the victory is that women are continuing to increase
their presence in the workforce within many different industries. Hopefully one day the two categories will disappear and all industries will be equally populated with both women and men.

Women inBusiness From one innovative business blooms a
budding empire
Leslie Hanes is building a local empire. What started as a single innovative clothing business has bloomed into three budding enterprises. It began with Discovery Trekking Outfitters in 2002. By 2006, Hanes bought out her partner to take sole ownership of the company which specializes in outdoor and athletic wear. What makes the business unique is that all of the clothing items are made on site, in the back of Hanes’ Ironwood Road store – the only company doing such a thing on Vancouver Island. The merchandise is custom made and all of the fabrics are waterproof and windproof. Discovery Trekking also makes a fast-dry towel
which is currently being sold in the United States and Australia. What makes the towel special, Hanes says, is that it dries three to four times faster and it contains silver in the fabric which is known to smother bacteria, making the towel fresh and hygienic. That same concept is applied to Discovery Trekking’s hot flash sleepwear and robes. A unique swim diaper for children, youth, and adults with special needs is also putting Discovery Trekking Outfitters on the map. Hanes says she’s been selling the product to medical companies in the United Kingdom, France, Australia, the United States and Canada. But that’s not all.
By Kristen Douglas
At the same time, Hanes is also managing Curves and, her most recent acquisition – Jenny Craig. Hanes purchased Curves 13 years ago and moved that business and Discovery Trekking Outfitters from Willow Point to her current location on Ironwood 10 years ago. Prior to that, Hanes had been working as an adjustor at ICBC for 20 years but was wanting a change. “I was interested in women’s health,” Hanes says. “I was not an exercise fanatic, I just realized how important exercise was to combat illness.” Hanes had been in a bad car accident and was in really bad pain until she started exercising regularly. “When the opportunity
to buy Curves came along it seemed like a good fit for me,” Hanes says. At Curves, women are treated to a 30-minute cross training circuit. Unlike most other gyms, at Curves you stay on one machine for just 30 seconds at a time before moving on to the next so that you’re getting a full body workout. Curves also offers boxing classes and Gillian Michaels high intensity interval training classes, among others, which alternate between 30 seconds of an exercise move and 30 seconds on a machine. Hanes says Curves works for “any fitness level” particularly because the machines run on hydraulics so they can be

sped up, increasing resistance for those who want more of a challenge. “They’re geared towards any level of fitness, you never outgrow it,” Hanes says. “We have extremely fit people and people just starting and we can fit their needs.” But Hanes was still looking for more. So, knowing that in the United States, the Jenny Craig weight loss program was partnering with Curves fitness centres, Hanes ap-
proached the company to see if she could bring a Jenny Craig to her Campbell River Curves. “They weren’t going to do a deal like that in Canada and I asked them if I could,” Hanes says. “They said ‘yes’ and I’m only one of three in Canada with a dual system.” Since opening in winter of 2014, she’s the only dual system in all of North America that has a full service Jenny Craig, meaning all of the food supplied as part of
the program is on site. Hanes asked if she could store the food – in freezers she purchased from Target when it shut down – because it was difficult to ship the frozen food from Ontario to Campbell River. Hanes said food wasn’t arriving on time because of missed ferries and other missed connections, sometimes due to inclement weather. Now, Jenny Craig clients can come into the store and order their food on a weekly basis, as opposed to the old system where food had to be ordered three weeks at a time. They also avoid shipping costs. Hanes says her newest addition to the family has been a success, with Jenny Craig offering personal consulting and a food program that offers gourmet dishes like Kung Pao beef, lasagna, chicken pot pie, and triple chocolate cheesecake. “I have a couple of guys

who come that asked me if they could keep coming here to order the food once they’ve lost the weight just because they don’t like to cook,” Hanes says. “It’s going very well. We’ve got people losing hundreds of pounds already. It’s very successful.” Hanes says she pursued Jenny Craig “because you can’t out exercise a bad diet and obesity is such a huge problem in our health system.” She says she finds that many people want to lose weight but are afraid to exercise. “Jenny Craig was a way to reach out and meet their needs.” She says running both Curves, a fitness centre, and Jenny Craig, which is focused on weight loss, has opened up options for her clients. “Our results with Curves and Jenny Craig together are much higher when it comes to regular weight

loss because they’re doing both,” Hanes says. Hanes employs seven people between Curves and Jenny Craig and another five at Discovery Trekking Outfitters. Hanes credits her entrepreneurial success to the amount of work she puts in each week. “It can be a lot of work,” she admits. But she’s not taking anything for granted and wants to help others in the community who are trying to establish themselves. Every Monday Hanes has a different local business set up a display table inside Curves to give that business free promotion. She also has a Business of the Week board that features a different local business. “We feel strongly about helping local business,” Hanes says. “We figure it’s the best way to help our community grow.”

Women inBusiness How often should Businesses do a
SWOT Analysis?
Conducting a SWOT analysis of your business won’t take much time, and doing it forces you to think about your business in a whole new way. It gives you pertinent information of your Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats to your business faces in the marketplace. Strengths and weaknesses are internal to the company such as its reputation, current brand recognition, market share, location, ect. You can change them over time but not without some work. Opportunities and threats are external such as suppliers, competitors, prices ect. They are out there in the market, happening whether you like it or not. You can’t change them. Both existing businesses and new businesses should use a SWOT analysis every year, to assess a changing environment and respond proactively and New businesses should use a SWOT analysis as a part of their planning process. There is no “one size fits all” plan for your business, and thinking about your new business in terms of its unique “SWOTs” will put you on the right track right away, and could save you from a lot of headaches later on. The recommendation is using brainstorming to identify the factors in each of the four categories and then discuss and compile the results. Bullet points may be the best way to begin to capture the factors that are relevant in each of the four areas. Then later you can expand and prioritize those that are immediate Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities or Threats. For more information and more tips you can go smallbusinessbc.ca

It’s not ‘Sell Something Media’, it’s ‘Social media’ We’d like to think we’re pretty good at engaging with our audience here at the Mirror. Before the advent of social media, newspapers used to have to rely on “Letters to the Editor” in the actual mailbox – remember those? – and people coming through the front door of the office to complain about something they read within the pages of the publication to know if we were reaching people in any meaningful way. These days, however, we can look at actual numbers. More than 12,500 people have “liked” us on Facebook or followed us on Twitter, implying that they would like our content to show up in their feeds on those platforms. They don’t all get to see everything we post, of course – because Facebook decides what content people see in their feeds despite what people themselves say – but they have declared that they would like to. (Hint: If you want to see more of our posts in your News Feed on
Facebook, click “Like” on one of them once in a while. Or better yet, if you like our content, “Share” one of our posts. Actually interacting with our content tells Facebook you want to see more of them. It also helps us determine the kinds of stories and photos people are wanting us to keep posting.) We think one of the reasons we have so many followers – relative to other local news sources in our area – on the most used social media platform on the
planet is that we don’t advertise to people on there. When we post something on social media, it’s not to sell anyone anything. It’s not to encourage you to do anything at all, unless you consider encouraging you to be informed and care about the things that are happening around you in your community. We use social media to get our created content – news stories and features that we actually write, photos we actually take with our own cameras and
videos we actually make out of footage we gather from being on scene at an event – in front of people who don’t read physical newspapers, or to share information that can’t be put in physical newspapers due to the medium itself (audio and video, obviously, don’t work in print). We also think another reason we do well online is that our content itself is of value. We create locally-relevant content featuring local people doing things locally that make a difference here. We keep tabs on what’s happening at City Hall, at the Board of Education, within the business community, and just straight-up give you the information you need to be informed about what’s happening in your area. And when you do that, it doesn’t matter what mode of distribution you use, because the eyes of the community will turn to you – however they feel most comfortable doing so – when they want to know what’s going on.

Preston Jewellers 40 years of History For 40 years, Preston Jewellers has been one of the first torefronts to welcome visitors to Campbell River’s downtown core. Behind the blue awning and the glass windows on Shoppers Row is a subdued, climate-controlled store of treasures. Glass display cases gleam under pot lights, or glow with lights from within. Diamonds, gold bands, silver chains, all manner of beautiful jewellery glisten under the lights. Many a Campbell River family started here with the purchase of an engagement ring and then, later, wedding bands. Other life milestones were commemorated with the precious jewellery found in this store: graduations, birthdays, retirements and more. It’s that connection to life’s landmark events that places a jewellery store uniquely at the heart of a community. For 40 years, Preston Jewellers has exemplified
that connection between a community and its milestones, not just through the sale of fine jewellery but by the Preston family itself living and growing in the community and being actively involved in community development for two generations. It’s a family business but it’s a very-involved-in-the-community business,” says Kim Stevens, manager of Preston Jewellers and daughter of business founder Brian Preston. The Preston family has been involved in a range of community charities and support organizations both through their busi-

making it a better place. Not just for me but to keep people here and keep them happy. “I mean, we like our town. We like our city.” Of course, the store has been a big part of Stevens’ life, besides working in it full time for the past 13 years. I think I started working here first when I was 12. Dusting,” Stevens said. Then when she was 14, she was allowed to talk to customers. Now she has a family of her own and manages the store. Her father’s still involved, coming in to do repairs amongst other things. Having been the son of a jeweller and running his own store for 40 years, he knows jewellery. “He’s an amazing shopper,” Stevens says. “He just has an eye.” At buying trips and trade shows, something will catch his eye and he’ll say, “boom, that’s it.” Sure enough, it will prove to

Preston took to collecting and delivering to Thailand, shoes and sandals for people who had lost everything in the tsunami. It all reflects the family’s belief in giving back to the community. That ethic is reflected in a simple philosophy. “The only way you can make your community better is investing in it,” Stevens says. “I like the idea of

Women inBusiness be popular with customers. The staff are almost part of the family too. With six to seven employees, most have been with the store 1520 years.“They’re pretty loyal and they’re great and knowledgeable,” Stevens says. “They can’t be here that long and not know the industry.” And knowledge is important in the jewellery business. Keeping on top of the trends is important. There’s lots of fads and fashions,” Stevens says. “That’s part of what we do, look for something new.” And how do you do that? “We have to travel-l-l-l-l,” Stevens says in a sing-song voice, followed with a laugh. “The only way to see what’s coming is to go somewhere where they’re a little ahead of us.” That involves places like Las Vegas and Toronto. That way they can see what they’re selling and then note that in two years they’d better be ready for that. They also learn of things that are hot sellers
right now.“ So we’re always, always looking. We try to keep current.” And it’s easier now because you can go online, but that has its limitations because what’s online is what’s selling now, not what’s coming down the pipe in two year’s time. here’s always risk though, because you have to “trust that what they are projecting is right.” But Preston Jewellers has an advantage in being so established. It allows them to take risks. When you’re new you have to be more invested in what’s tried and true because if it doesn’t sell, you’re in a bind. Being established, Preston Jewellers can afford to try something new because they’re an established business with a solid customer base and they can ride out something that doesn’t catch on. If it doesn’t work, we can try something else,” Stevens says. “We’re able to take the chances. Also, we do have a good customer
base. People will come in and ask us what’s new.” Repairs are a big part of the business as well. Like every facet of society, the jewellery business is being impacted by Baby Boomers. Preston Jewellers sees this manifested when Boomers inherit their parents’ jewellery. Sometimes they don’t like it, so they take the diamonds and the gold out and have it redesigned.“ We’ve always done designing but now we’re looking at mismatched sizes of diamonds and what are you going to do with it? So now we’re finding designs that will fit with that.” It also respects family heritage and preserves family history by finding a way to keep the jewellery but repurpose it in a modern design.“ It still represents the history and getting it from their parents but it’s an updated style,” Stevens says. Preston Jewellers itself has a 40-year history that keeps repur-

posing because of the vagaries of fashion trends. The business began in 1975 when Brian Preston, with his wife and three children, moved here from Edmonton, Alberta. The plan was to buy an already established jewellery business – De Haan’s Jewellers, started by Jeep De Haan. The business was already operating out of the Discovery Inn, which continues to house Preston Jewellers, albeit occupying more space. The jewellery business is in the Preston family’s blood. Preston’s parents owned and operated Preston Jewellers in Flin Flon, Manitoba. With the move to the Island, Preston was saying goodbye to a sales career of eight years. But he never looked back, quickly taking to life by the sea. The first thing he did when he arrived was buy a boat. The store has weathered many fads from newfangled clock radios in the 1970s, mini ring watches and Swatches in the 80s, collectors plates in the late 80s

and 90s. Stevens says as the town has changed over the years, so has the jewellery business. One of the trends right now is the consumer wants brand names. “We’ve found that in the past, somebody wanted a picture frame we could get any one but now it’s Wang or Pandora,” Stevens says. “It’s a good way for us to go too in that there’s a consistent quality as well.” “People want a branded purse. They don’t just want a leather purse, they want a brand on it. A watch that has a name on it. People are so marketed to so that is what they expect. The name recognition is huge and that’s across the board.”If familiarity is the strength of a brand, then the family jewellery shop in downtown Campbell River is a brand of its own, having served the community for 40 years and showing no signs of slowing down, no matter what the trend.

Equal Work for Equal Pay Equal pay for equal work is the concept of labor rights that individuals doing the same work should receive the same remuneration. It is most commonly used in the context of sexual discrimination, in relation to the gender pay gap. Equal pay relates to the full range of payments and benefits, including basic pay, non-salary payments, bonuses and allowances. Some countries have moved faster than others in addressing the problem. Since President Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act in 1963, it has been illegal in the United States to pay men and women working in the same place different salaries for similar work. In Canada, the terms pay equity and pay equality are used somewhat differently from in other countries. The two terms refer to distinctly separate legal concepts. Pay equality, or equal pay for equal work, refers to the requirement that men and women be paid the same if performing the same job in the same organization. For example, a female electrician must be paid the same as a male electrician in the same organization. Reasonable differences are permitted if due to seniority or merit. Pay equality is required by law in each of Canada’s 14 legislative jurisdictions (ten provinces, three

territories, and the federal government). Note that federal legislation applies only to those employers in certain federally regulated industries such as banks, broadcasters, and airlines, to name a few. For most employers, the relevant legislation is that of the respective province or territory. For federally regulated employers, pay equality is guaranteed under the Canadian Human Rights Act. In Ontario, pay equality is required under the Ontario Employment Standards Act. Every Canadian jurisdiction has similar legislation, although the name of the law will vary. In contrast, pay equity, in the Canadian context, means that male-dominated occupations and female-dominated occupations of comparable value must be paid the same if within the same employer. The Canadian term pay equity is referred to as “comparable worth” in the US. For example, if an organization’s nurses and electricians are deemed to have jobs of equal importance, they must be paid the same. One way of distinguishing the concepts is to note that pay equality addresses the rights of women employees as individuals, whereas pay equity addresses the rights of femaledominated occupations as groups.

Linda Spooner Owner of the local Campbell River Storm Junior Hockey Club as well as K&L Spooner Construction Ltd, property manager and proud teacher with SD#72. At a glance, these roles would appear not to have much in common, but at the heart, they all share my passion for people. Whether focusing on my students, hockey fans, tenants or clients, my commitment to their needs is the driving force that motivates me each and every day. My desire is that whoever I come in contact with in my sphere of influence will be inspired and encouraged to follow their passions and dreams as I have.

ampbell River is an amazing community, full of diversity and success everywhere you look, with a tremendous number of successful women in its business sector. The team at Coastline Mazda, being predominately women, is proud to bring the qualities and strengths women tend to bring to the business of automotive needs. We are in the business of people, and recognize women are a significant part of that business. Unfortunately many women do not always feel the security, confidence and trust they should in their dealings with their local dealership. We are devoted to providing a customer service experience that exceeds even the highest expectation that we invite Campbell River to Coastline Mazda to experience for themselves the satisfaction and quality of service they deserve.
If you call you will have the pleasure of speaking with HEATHER SMITH our Office & Accounts Manager.
