March marks 40 years since the moving of the Cronquist House The historic home was transported from West Park to Bower Ponds

I

t’s been four decades since the monumental move of the Cronquist House from West Park across the Red Deer river to Bower Ponds took place.

It was back in 1912 that Emmanuel Pettersen Cronquist, originally from Sweden, finished work on the house.

In 1886, he married Hilda Carlsdater in Varmland, Sweden. In 1892, he traveled to western Canada to look for new opportunities. He returned the following year, settling in the Burnt Lake area.

In 1894, Hilda sailed to join him, (tragically, they lost two sons on that journey to Canada).

In the fall of 1901, the Cronquists bought land in what is now the West Park subdivision. Emmanuel proved to be a successful businessman with extensive farming and livestock operations, so eventually it was decided that a prominent new home was in order.

“It stood near the high riverbank, so that the house could be seen across the Red Deer valley,” said local historian Michael Dawe. It was also located next to the old Calgary-Edmonton Trail (now part of 43 St.) so that many travelers would notice it as they passed by.”

When Elias, the last surviving member of the family, passed away in June 1974, the old house stood vacant for some time.

The house was eventually acquired by the Red Deer International Folk Festival Society (now the Red Deer Cultural Heritage Society).

“The house was really meant to be a showpiece,” said Dawe. “It was meant to be beautiful, it was meant to be attractive and it was meant to show that Mr. Cronquist had done very well.” The family also owned in excess of 1,000 acres of land.

“It you looked up to the west bank there was this gigantic house with a turret - almost castle-like. It really was a landmark.”

According to the Red Deer Cultural Heritage Society, the home is described as a Victorian-style farmhouse.

“Through the years it fell into disrepair, and it was not until the 1980s that it was renovated. In 1976, the house was rescued by the Red Deer International Folk Festival Society and was brought across the Red Deer River to where it stands today. A special ‘road’ was built down the south bank. And of course, even with the bricks removed, there was a formidable weight to the house.

“Once they had decided to save the house,

the plaster and brick facing had to come off. The interior decorations of the house are new although reminiscent of the era the house was built in and the beautiful and extensive woodwork is original.”

Elizabeth and David Plumtree were a part of the Red Deer International Folk Festival Society that worked so hard to see the house both saved and ultimately moved to the site that its located at today.

Others at the time, and this is by no means an exhaustive list, included Hans Mathiesen, Bob Jewell, Bob and Effie McGregor, Betty and Stan Wulff and Bruno Stephan. John Murray’s contributions as an architect were also essential to the success of the project and the house was transported by Swede Tronnes of Bonanza Movers.

“We had a passion - all of us did - to retain this beautiful old house,” said Elizabeth,

“A lot of people felt that way.”

As mentioned, a road was built along the bank and the house was moved down the slope and across the river at one of its more shallow spots near the present day Bower Ponds - all in about one hour. “It weighed 70 tonnes,” said David, adding that the house was first placed beside its current location for several months as a basement was dug.

Moving day was March 27th, 1976.

Today, the house looks like it has simply been in the spot since it was first built in fact, it’s tough to imagine a more ideal setting for the home, nestled in the picturesque Bower Ponds area.

At the time the house was moved, however, the area was essentially composed of gravel pits - the landscaping and transformation was yet to come.

As to the restoration of the home itself,

multitudes of volunteers helped out in virtually every way, from trades and construction professionals to citizens who simply donated their time to help out in any way they could.

Today, original items in the house include Elias’s chair and an enormous cabinet that stands on the main level. There are also portraits of Emmanuel and Hilda in the large living room area on the main floor as well.

The house is used for community and private events, and operates as a tea house during the summer. The house also provides a focal point for the annual Canada Day celebrations.

Ultimately, as Dawe points out, it really couldn’t have been placed in a better ‘second’ home.

“A beautiful Edwardian landmark was restored and a beautiful all-season park area was established.”

Groundbreaking ceremony takes place for new wellness centre Premier Rachel Notley addresses local issues during last week’s visit

BY KALISHA MENDONSA RED DEER EXPRESS A milestone achievement for Central Albertans, particularly the Red Deer community, was marked last week with the official groundbreaking of the Gary W. Harris Centre for Health, Wellness and Sport.

The Centre is a crucial facility for hosting the 2019 Canada Winter Games, and is an addition to the Red Deer College (RDC) Campus, officials say.

Premier Rachel Notley, Minister of Advanced Education Marlin Schmidt and many more dignitaries attended the launch at RDC last Friday. Notley brought with her the official announcement of $20 million from the Alberta Government to support construction, which is expected to be completed in the summer of 2018.

“It gives me pleasure to be able to invest in infrastructure that will serve this community for generations, while providing significant economic benefits for the region. The Gary W. Harris Centre will be a crucial athletic performance and training venue, both during the 2019 Winter Games and long after,” Notley said to a crowd of several hundred at the RDC Arts Centre.

“There are many intangibles as well including raising the profile of those host communities and exposing other Canadians to some of our hidden gems communities just like Red Deer.”

Many partners have come together to support the funding of the Gary W. Harris Centre, including the City of Red Deer, Red Deer County, the Province of Alberta and a number of private donors. The facility will bring a number of new learning spaces, athletic training facilities and new programming availability for students.

Joel Ward, president of RDC, was excited for the announcements and introduction of the facility to the community.

Games and its lasting legacy in the Central Alberta community.

“Beyond the immediate economic benefits of this project, the centre will help strengthen the already impressive post-secondary options that Red Deer College provides. The future health professionals trained in this building will go on to serve others in countless other communities around our province, and our health care system will be stronger for it,” she said.

While the premier was avail-

able, local media gathered to question the provincial perspective on issues such as the carbon tax, problems at the Red Deer Regional Hospital and the current economic status of Alberta.

“There is no question that all of Alberta is going through probably the most difficult economic times we’ve seen in decades,” Notley said.

“When it comes to the government’s role in the economy, we’re focused on ensuring stability and we continue to provide basic help to communities that need it. We’re also investing more in capital and infrastructure to provide job opportunities for people who are otherwise losing their jobs because of this slow down in our economy.”

When asked if the province would support upgrades and repair costs at the Red Deer Regional Hospital, Notley said the local hospital was not the only one in the province suffering from a lack of funding.

“The problem actually reveals a bigger problem and that is for many, many years the government hasn’t actually put funding into hospital upgrades,” she said.

“We do have a backlog - a tremendous backlog - in health care upgrade needs. We’re in the process of looking into those upgrades but that has to be done with some care.”

Notley also commented on the carbon tax.

“Whether or not (the carbon tax) will be revenue neutral on a sector-by-sector basis is complicated. Our fundamental principle is that every dollar that comes out goes back in, and it goes back in in the form of either an adjustment - which supports people that are particularly struggling with the cost - families, small businesses, people of exposed industries. Board members needed to keep Teen-Ed program running

BY ERIN FAWCETT RED DEER EXPRESS Board members are needed to help keep an educational program up and running in the City.

Teen-Ed has been offered in Red Deer schools for over 20 years. Financially, the non-profit organization is in decent shape, but a number of longstanding board members have given their notice to step down after working tirelessly for years, and if four to six new board members are not found by April, the organization will have no choice but to fold.

According to the brochure, the purpose of Teen-Ed is to encourage abstinence as a realistic pre-marital lifestyle for teens by increased understanding of their sexuality, fostering a respect for their power to create life, and promoting stronger, more effective communications between parents and teens.

“The main thing that I love about the program is believing that teens can make good decisions as long as they have accurate information,” said Shari Moore, the education coordinator for Teen-Ed and who has been teaching the program for 16 years. “The underlying piece of it is just about respect. It’s about respecting yourself and understanding why making healthy sexual choices is so important - that it does have major lifetime, longterm consequences.”

The goals of Teen-Ed include enhancing self-esteem, enabling teens to make lifestyle choices which promote their physical, emotional and relational well-being; to provide information for teens enabling them to make healthy personal, sexuality and lifestyle choices; increase communication levels between parents and their children; reduce teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease; and inform the community about the aims, philosophy and objectives of Teen-Ed. There are three different age-appropriate programs taught within Teen-Ed

which include one for Grade 5-6 students, one for Grade 8-9 students and one for high school-aged students.

Topics discussed include human growth and development, self-esteem and decision making, communication skills, understanding societal pressures, peer pressure reversal, friendship and dating and rights and responsibilities.

In teaching the program for 16 years, Moore said the statistics of sexual activity amongst teenagers hasn’t changed that much.

“When teaching Grade 9 students, there’s a fluctuation of about five per cent, but it isn’t that everyone is doing it.

In high school we’re seeing a little bit of fluctuation,” she said. “But I think where we are seeing a higher rate is with the idea of sexting and pornography.”

As for needing more board members, Moore said there is minimal commitment annually.

“Some of the responsibilities of the board members are to make decisions for the direction of the program and to engage in the fundraising. The board members meet once a month for nine months of the year - we don’t meet in December or the summer months,” she said. “It isn’t a huge commitment but if we don’t have new board members by April, the decision will be made to close this organization.”

In addition, Moore said she is hopeful the Teen-Ed program can continue to be offered in Central Alberta.

“We do have a strong presence in a lot of schools. The program is just invaluable.

The kids buy into it. It really is about engaging in reality and it’s really eye-opening,” she said. “I have been talking with some of the schools about the possibility of this program not being offered anymore and they are upset because they see what a huge impact this has on their students.”

Irish eyes will be smiling this St. Patrick’s Day Shamrocks, green beer or Irish heritage. All these things might make St. Patrick’s Day more special, but really it’s a light-hearted day that most people in some way recognize.

Many might wear green this Thursday, and others pinch those who aren’t wearing green. An odd custom to be sure, but it somehow fits with this day which dates back centuries to a mysterious fellow by the name of – wait for it – St. Patrick.

This man lived around the time of 387 to 461 AD, and is the most commonly recognized of the patron saints of Ireland.

St. Patrick’s Day originated as a Catholic holiday and eventually became an official feast day in the early 17th century.

It gradually became more of a secular celebration of Irish culture.

According to Wikipedia, originally the colour associated with Saint Patrick was blue. But over the years the colour green and its association with Saint Patrick’s Day grew. Of course this is fitting, with St.

Paddy hailing from the Emerald Isle.

Green ribbons and shamrocks were worn in celebration of St Patrick’s Day as early as the 17th century. “(St. Patrick) is said to have used the shamrock, a threeleaved plant, to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish, and the wearing and display of shamrocks and shamrock-inspired designs have become a ubiquitous feature of the day.”

Today, it’s a holiday that has reached an international status that the humble St. Patrick couldn’t have possibly dreamed of. Apart from wearing something green, one of the more common means of marking the holiday is by guzzling a pint of green beer for example.

But there are much more unique ways the day is commemorated as well. In the last number of years, the water in the White House fountain has been dyed green to mark the occasion.

As well, the Chicago River has been dyed green as well for that city’s St.

Patrick’s Day celebrations.

Not to be left out, Japan is also increasingly marking the day. The first parade, in Tokyo, was organized in the early 1990s.

The tiny island of Montserrat, known as ‘Emerald Island of the Caribbean’ because of its founding by Irish refugees from St. Kitts and Nevis, is the only place in the world apart from Ireland and the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador where St. Patrick’s Day is a public holiday.

Meanwhile, on a serious not, Catholic Social Services wished to remind folks about perhaps switching cocktails for mocktails this St. Paddy’s Day. It was part of an initiative to help shatter myths about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.

It only takes a couple of alcoholic drinks to begin a process with lifelong implications.

FASD, is an umbrella term used to describe a range of disabilities that result from prenatal alcohol exposure. It is the leading cause of developmental disability

in Canada, officials say.

It is estimated that more than 36,000 Albertans are affected by FASD, and that a baby is born with FASD every day in the province. Officials say that he annual cost in Alberta is $927.5 million, which includes the cost of health, social, educational, and correctional services, as well as productivity losses and other costs.

The individuals affected by FASD that CSS staff assist on a daily basis struggle with everyday living tasks one might take for granted, and often require involvement from family and/or support staff to improve their chances of living a successful life.

To address this serious social issue, CSS offers a range of programs.

In Red Deer, the FASD Outreach ministry supports children and adults who have FASD (or are suspecting of having FASD), as well as their families through helping to develop life skills and by providing crisis support intervention.

The dangers of ending coal-fired generation Some things legislators vote on cost money, and only money. Other things demand a human cost, which can be a lot more difficult to evaluate. There is no hard and fast rule.

Generally, it involves looking for ways to measure the pain, grief and suffering that a hasty or poorly conceived government policy can create.

One policy that’s imposing ever-increasing financial and human costs worldwide is poorly planned, badly executed electrical policy - specifically, green energy and the quest to stamp out carbon dioxide. It’s a well-intended initiative that the Alberta government wants to get into in a big way. The problem is that no one knows the total costs involved.

ORR Originally, Ontario’s socalled green objective was said to be a good idea.

Yet today, the province has the highest priced industrial power rates in North America. Ontario’s Auditor General recently reported that consumers paid $37 billion above market price for electricity in a single eight year period. That’s not $37 billion for electricity. That’s $37 billion more than the electricity was actually worth. Between now and 2032, consumers

will pay an additional $133 billion over and above the actual market price. If you add it up, the over payment is roughly equal to 25% of Canada’s national debt.

To accumulate the national debt took two world wars and almost 150 years.

Ontario did this to themselves with a single legislative policy.

According to the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, one in 20 businesses will close due to electrical rates. The problem has become so acute that some of the big industrial power users are moving away. As far as they’re concerned, neither they nor anyone else can afford to overpay for electricity to the tune of $170 billion.

The Ontario government’s own web site says that low-income households are spending 10% or more of their incomes on electricity, forcing the government to think through and establish subsidy programs, which place a further drag on jobs and the economy.

These aren’t just economic costs. They’re human costs.

Clearly, cost-efficient renewable energy makes sense and should be pursued. But putting on blinders and marching off the green energy cliff is silly.

(The height of Ontario’s silliness came in the conversion of a coal-fired facility to a biomass plant that only runs on imported Norwegian wood chips, generating energy at 25

times the average cost.)

Now it appears that Alberta has decided to follow Ontario’s lead. In its desire to put an early end to the use of coal (including clean coal technology), our government intends to prematurely shut down Alberta’s coal-fired electrical generation plants.

No one actually knows the policy’s cost - financial or human - nor do we know the effect it might have on the investment community and business sector. Based on the experience of Ontario and other jurisdictions, we do know that it’ll be expensive. The additional billions flowing into higher priced government-mandated electrical generation are billions that will be diverted from useful spending and pro-

ductive investment.

For Alberta, this policy is going to affect individuals, businesses and entire communities (e.g. Forestburg, Hanna).

Even so, the government hasn’t consulted with any of these people, nor with Albertans as a whole.

Instead, it’s assuming that its philosophical commitment to quickly ending coal-fired generation must take priority over dialogue, financial considerations, and the stark human cost that the policy will extract.

Update on 100 men and women groups

BY KALISHA MENDONSA RED DEER EXPRESS The 100 Men and 100 Women Who Care groups in Red Deer each had a successful year last year and are hoping to continue in full swing for 2016.

The 100 Men Red Deer group held their most recent meeting on March 7th, where they gave approximately $8,000 to a local music support program called Sistema.

Groups also nominated included the Central Alberta Pregnancy Care Centre and the Red Deer & District Community Foundation.

The Red Deer chapter of Sistema connects members of the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra with music programs at Normandeau School and G.H. Dawe School, through the Red Deer Public School District.

“The problem in Red Deer is that there isn’t enough money to buy instruments for some schools. The funds that we raised - just about $8,000 will go to buy instruments for Normandeau and G.H. Dawe schools, and the Red Deer Symphony is going to teach the students and apply for future grants,” explained Jeff Rock of 100 Men. “There will be instruments for not only the music class, but for after school band activities.

Those schools are two that have some financially challenged families that may not be able to provide the opportunities of instruments.

“Music is cooperative and everyone comes together through the instruments. It takes a discipline and dedication to follow through. Studies have shown that students who study in music education do better in other areas as well, so it has a compounding effect.

Unfortunately in this day and age, music and arts programs are the first ones cut when a school is doing their budget, but there is potential for a great impact for students.”

Rock said the group is trying to recruit more men to join. He said the networking and community building aspects of the group are a great environment and he hopes people

realize the need for the work the group facilitates.

“The really cool thing about 100 Men Red Deer is what a cross-section of the community it is,” Rock said.

“We’ve got people from trades and people in the oil and gas industry. We have lawyers, accountants, financial planners, plumbers, ministers and more.

It’s a group of 100 men who are all passionate and compassionate towards changing their community.”

The next meeting for 100 Men Red Deer will be held at International Beer Haus on June 6th at 7 p.m.

Members of 100 Women Red Deer allocated their funds from the most recent meeting to Suicide Education and Information Services, out of a possible 13 organizations.

Cindy Jefferies of 100 Women said the issue felt particularly timely, with suicide rates climbing in Alberta and a poor economy taking a toll on citizens.

“I do some work with the Red Deer Primary Care Network, and we had a presenter come in recently to talk about suicide rates in Alberta and in Red Deer.

There has been a huge increase in the last couple of years. Our province’s economic situation and lack of jobs is also causing a lot of stress. It got me thinking that it’s probably going to get worse,” Jefferies said.

The group sent approximately $20,000 to the charity.

A slight change in the 100 Women group is now what Jefferies called a steering committee. The group of just under 10 women helps to maintain the group, follow up on donations and share information among members.

“This year, we might not see a ton of growth but I think we’re managing to hold our own membership,” Jefferies said.

“We were wondering how that would go considering the economy, but we feel like those who are still in a position to give to charity are realizing that this is a time of need, so they are continuing to donate.”

A community visionary - Michael John Quinn Tomorrow (Thursday) is St. Patrick’s Day.

DAWE It is a time of year when all kinds of people, whether they are actually Irish or not, celebrate St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland.

Central Alberta is no exception to having a lot of people of Irish descent, and ‘wannabe Irish’ wearing green and/or joining in the various festivities.

The Irish have long played a major role in the history and development of our community. One example of early Irish Canadians in the Red Deer district was the Quinn family.

Michael Quinn was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on Oct. 24th, 1866, but his parents were from Galway, Ireland. Originally, he worked as a sailor.

However, he eventually decided to try his luck in the American Midwest.

In 1890, he met and married Lucinda McAnelly, whose family was originally from Antrim County in Northern Ireland. Shortly thereafter, the young couple moved to a homestead at Butte, Nebraska.

Meanwhile, Michael’s older brother, Martin, served with the North West Mounted Police and was ultimately posted at

Fort MacLeod.

Martin wrote about the great prospects in Alberta.

In 1900, Michael, Lucinda and their children, moved to a new homestead west of Red Deer in the Centreville district.

Michael was very happy with his choice. He was soon joined by Martin and his young family as well as another brother Charles.

Charles was not as taken with homesteading as his brothers and soon returned to a seafaring life in Nova Scotia.

Tragedy struck in 1901 when daughter Clyola died.

Then, in July 1904, Lucinda suddenly passed away.

Discouraged, Michael sold his farm at Centreville and moved to Red Deer with his three surviving children. He purchased the Great West Hotel, two adjoining houses and a livery stable.

The Great West Hotel was different than other hostelries in the community.

It was a ‘temperance hotel’ in that it never had a bar. It had originally been built as the Royal Hotel in 1903, but the name was changed shortly thereafter to the Great West.

Despite the lack of a beer parlour, the hotel had been doing well. The location, a block and a half south of the C.P.R. station, was an ideal one for attracting people coming to Red Deer by rail.

The two houses provided a good rental income. The livery business prospered with all of the newcomers in town.

By 1906, the Great West had been doing well enough that a large addition was constructed.

The new addition included a spacious dining room that looked out over a grove of poplar trees and Waskasoo Creek. For those patrons who were so inclined, there was a shady secluded spot in the creek in which to swim (in other words, the pioneer version of a hotel

with a pool).

Since he didn’t have a bar, Michael Quinn built up the quality of his food service to attract more customers. He hired an excellent Chinese cook.

Soon, the Great West was well known as a place to get a high quality meal at a very good price.

Michael married Rose Koshman, an Armenian Canadian, in 1908.

family to the Kootenays of British Columbia, where he took up ranching. He and Rose subsequently moved on to Spokane, Washington, where he worked for a railroad.

Meanwhile, the Great West hit hard times. A new owner, John Hennessy, another Irish Canadian, briefly tried operating the hotel as the Farmers’ and Workmen’s Hotel, but neither the name nor the new

owner lasted long.

At the end of 1910, the Great West Hotel had fallen into receivership.

A prominent local businessman bought it for $5,000, but was unable to turn things around. By the time of the First World War, the hotel had permanently closed. The City of Red Deer, which had acquired the property for back taxes, demolished the structure in 1923.

City council supports THANKS Red Deer... we are Energy East pipeline GROWING

Red Deer City council has approved a resolution that endorses the Energy East pipeline project.

Energy East, a national infrastructure project, will transport oil to refineries and coastal ports. This project is undergoing a federal regulatory review through the National Energy Board (NEB). There are 16 points of review the NEB will consider based on evidence and testimony to the panel. These include economic benefit, safety and security, emergency preparedness, impact to landowners, impact to indigenous communities, environmental, social, and economic impacts.

“EVEN THOUGH OUR LOCAL ECONOMY HAS DIVERSIFIED SUBSTANTIALLY SINCE THE LAST RECESSION, WE RECOGNIZE THE COMMUNITY THAT WE SERVE STILL HAS VERY STRONG ROOTS IN THE OIL AND GAS SECTOR AND WE NEED TO DO WHAT WE CAN TO HELP GET OUR CITIZENS BACK TO WORK.”

“Because there were other communities in the east that were vocal against the pipeline, AUMA felt a sense of responsibility to convey a position on the issue from an Alberta perspective.

“They were looking for the solidarity of their membership and in response to the Mayors’ Caucus last week, Alberta mayors were choosing to bring it forward to various municipalities across the province.”

Council supported the motion to endorse the Energy East pipeline project.

“The vote of council was unanimous in recognition of the fact that Alberta’s economy has a strong impact and is an economic driver of the entire country,” said Veer. “Even though our local economy has diversified substantially since the last recession, we recognize the community that we serve still has very strong roots in the oil and gas sector and we need to do what we can to help get our citizens back to work.”

Now, the resolution supported by council will be submitted to the premier’s office as well as the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.

“This is important because there are mayors in the east that are vocal on the issue at hand and it was important to convey our position.”

The most interesting thing, I think, is that we’re installing 106 digital clocks throughout various areas of the cardiac units. Those clocks synchronize the time so that health care professionals can see exactly when the last treatment was given something very important when you need medication at specific intervals.

That’s a cool project this year that we’ll be funding,” de Bohr said.

Sylvia Barron, director of Emergency, Critical Care and Cardiology at the Red Deer Regional Hospital, was at the grand opening, pleased and honoured to have her programs being presented with the funds from the lottery.

“We were very lucky to be the recipients last year as well, which helped our first phase of the Cardiac Enhancement Program,” Barron said.

“For phase two we are expanding more cardiac monitors in the emergency department and enhancing computers at our Intensive Care Unit (ICU) central station. COURT BRIEFS PRELIM TO BEGIN ON THURSDAY A preliminary hearing for a man charged with impaired driving causing death will begin in Red Deer court on March 17th.

Chad Ryan Connatty, 31, faces numerous charges after a collision last May in Red Deer that resulted in the death of a 44-year-old Springbrook man.

He has been charged with impaired driving causing death, operation of a motor vehicle while driving with a blood alcohol level over .08 causing death, impaired operation of a motor vehicle, blood alcohol exceeding .08 and driving while disqualified. He has also been charged with possession of marijuana.

Red Deer RCMP responded to a collision between a Ford 150 and a motorcycle May 20th, 2015 at 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of 19th St. and 30th Ave. Witnesses attempted to administer CPR to the driver of the motorcycle until Red Deer EMS and firefighters arrived.

sion occurred when the truck, which was driving northbound on 30th Ave., attempted to turn left onto 19th St. and collided with the motorcycle, which was driving south on 30th Ave. The victim was wearing a helmet.

An RCMP collision analyst attended and the intersection was blocked off for almost three hours while RCMP conducted their investigation.

Connatty was arrested at the scene for impaired driving causing death and was taken into custody.

The preliminary hearing is expected to run until March 18th.

MAN CHARGED IN 2006 MURDER MAKES FIRST APPEARANCE A Lacombe man charged in relation to a 2006 murder has made his first court appearance in Red Deer this week.

Shayne Earl Gulka, 44, has been charged with first degree murder and kidnapping after Bradley Webber was murdered in his fifth wheel trailer in Eck-

ville on Oct. 24th, 2006.

Gulka, who was arrested in Lacombe last week, is one of two men charged with first degree murder. The other, Kevin Edward Brown, 33, remains at large.

Gulka will return to court March 29th.

MAN CHARGED WITH MURDER IN COURT A man charged with second degree murder made his second appearance in Red Deer Provincial Court on Monday via CCTV. Shane Dion McPhee, 40, has been charged in relation to the suspicious death of a man who was dropped off at the Red Deer Regional Hospital on Feb. 13th.

On Feb. 16th, an autopsy was held at the Calgary Medical Examiner’s Office and it was determined that his manner of death was a homicide. The deceased male was identified as 47-year-old William Blaine Baker.

McPhee will return to court March 16th.

ANDREW SNOW APPEARS IN COURT A Central Alberta man charged with attempted murder made another appearance in Red Deer Provincial Court last week via CCTV. Andrew Snow, 29, has been charged with attempted murder in relation to two shooting incidents near Eckville and Sylvan Lake last September. He also faces numerous other charges.

His next court appearance is scheduled for March 21st in Red Deer Provincial Court.

TWO MEN ACCUSED OF MURDER WILL HEAD TO TRIAL A preliminary hearing for two men accused of murdering a Castor-area family wrapped up in Red Deer court last Thursday.

Jason Gordon Klaus has been charged with three counts of first degree murder and one count of arson in relation to the deaths of his father Gordon

Klaus, 61, his mother Sandra Klaus, 62 and his sister Monica Klaus, 40, in December 2013.

Joshua Gregory Frank has also been charged with three counts of first degree murder in relation to the deaths as well as one count of arson and one count of injuring or endangering an animal in relation to the shooting death of the family dog.

Calgary RCMP Major Crimes Unit, said police believe her remains were consumed by the fire.

Hamori added Jason was arrested in August 2014 at Monica’s residence in Stettler while Frank was arrested at his brother’s residence in Castor.

He said the arrests were made after a “Key piece of evidence” was found by an RCMP dive team from B.C. in Big Knife Provincial Park during a dive on July 26th and July 27th, 2014.

He said that evidence played a major role in laying the charges against the two suspects.

The pair will return to court next month to set a date for trial.

CMHA Now Accepting Applications for April WRAP For Life.

WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Planning) is an eightweek course designed to identify what individuals need for everyday wellness. WRAP helps people incorporate wellness tools and strategies into their lives. Thousands of people, world-wide, have successfully used what they learned at an 8-week WRAP course to live happier and more satisfying lives while improving connections to their families, their friends, and their community.

POLICE BRIEFS SHOTS FIRED AT RCMP DETACHMENT A Red Deer man has been charged after two windows in the Red Deer RCMP downtown detachment were shot at with a replica firearm shortly before 4 p.m. Monday.

RCMP received the first report at 3:15 p.m. on March 14th that a maroon coloured Ford truck was driving through the Normandeau area and that the occupants were shooting at street signs. That was followed by a second call at 3:30 p.m. locating the truck in the area of the downtown RCMP detachment.

Concurrently, two second-storey windows in the lobby of the downtown RCMP detachment were struck by an unknown type of firearm or replica firearm, resulting in the glass pebbling but not shattering, thanks to its protective coating.

Police soon identified the driver of the truck; within minutes of the detachment windows being struck, they located the suspect truck in the area of Boyce Street and Beatty Crescent and executed a high risk arrest of the occupants at 4 p.m. Two men and two women were taken into custody without further incident.

The weapon, a BB pistol, was seized by police.

Cory Daniel Picard, 21, of Red Deer was the sole back seat passenger and was in possession of the BB pistol; he has been charged with using imitation firearm in the commission of an offence, possession of weapon for dangerous purpose, mischief/ damage to property over $5,000 and uttering threats.

The driver and other two occupants of the truck were released without charge, and the investigation continues.

was noticed after the fact, as it was not accompanied by any noticeable noise. When it was discovered, the citizens within the detachment were evacuated while staff examined the glass to ensure it was not in danger of shattering.

SUSPECTS SOUGHT AFTER ARMED ROBBERIES Red Deer RCMP are investigating two armed robberies that took place Sunday evening and in the early hours of Monday morning at two convenience stories in Red Deer.

The first armed robbery occurred shortly after 5 p.m. on March 13th when a man entered the North Hill Store on 59th Ave. displaying a handgun. He demanded cash and a number of cartons of cigarettes. The suspect is described as wearing a white coat, black toque and blue jeans.

The second armed robbery occurred shortly before 3 a.m. on March 14th when a man entered the Express 24 Foodmart on Erickson Drive and demanded cash and a number of cartons of cigarettes. The suspect is described as approximately 5’10” tall with a heavy build, approximately 240 lbs. He had a red goatee and wore a black coat, faded blue jeans, white running shoes, black sunglasses and a ‘Coors’ toque.

TAXI CAB INCIDENT The Red Deer City RCMP is asking for the public’s assistance in locating a taxi cab. At 7:35 p.m. tonight, RCMP received a complaint from Associated Taxi in Red Deer stating that the taxi cab driver had initiated a “code red,” which in Associated Taxi parlance means that the cab driver is in need of immediate assistance. Taxi cab drivers in the vicinity attempted to stop the vehicle, however the vehicle refused to stop and fled. Soon after this, the cellular telephone of the driver was turned off and the GPS system on the Associated Taxi was disabled. It is believed that the taxi may have left the city of Red Deer.

Police are requesting assistance in locating the taxi, which is described as a white 2008 Dodge Caravan with Alberta Licence Plate H86148. The taxi can also be identified as having “#83” stencilled on it.

The Red Deer City RCMP would like to thank the public for its assistance in locating the taxi cab RCMP were searching for earlier this evening. The driver of the taxi cab was also located unharmed. Police are not searching for any further suspects. The cab driver in question has not been cooperative thus far, so police cannot state why the cab hit the panic alarm, disabled the GPS and turned off his cellular phone.

MAN WANTED FOR 2006 MURDER It was on the evening of Oct. 24th, 2006 that Bradley Webber was killed in his fifth wheel trailer in Eckville. Now, after a grueling investigation which spans almost 10 years, the RCMP’s Major Crimes Unit South, with the assistance of the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit, has charged two men with first degree murder in relation to the death of Webber. RCMP have arrested one man and a Canada-wide arrest warrant has been issued for another man accused in the homicide.

Last week, police arrested 44-year-old Shayne Earl Gulka of Lacombe. He has been charged with the first degree murder of Webber as well as with the kidnaping of another individual.

Kevin Edward Brown, a 33-year-old man from Calgary, is wanted on one count of first degree murder in relation to the death of Webber and one count kidnaping involving another person. A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Brown is described as a Caucasian male, 5’9” tall and 179 lbs. He has blonde hair and

brown eyes, moles on his face and a scar on his forehead.

He also has a Chinese symbol tattoo on left side of the neck and a tribal design on right upper arm.

The RCMP is asking for the assistance of the public in locating and apprehending Brown, however, he should not be approached if seen. Instead, the public is asked to call 9-1-1 should they see him.

MORE CHARGES LAID A Red Deer man faces 55 Criminal Code charges after the Priority Crimes Task Force executed two separate search warrants on Red Deer properties in late January, seizing numerous firearms and stolen recreational vehicles. A Red Deer woman also faces several charges.

Riley James Mittelstadt, 40, has been charged with five counts of possession of stolen property over $5,000, seven counts of possession of stolen property under $5,000, possession of stolen weapon, two counts of possession of restricted firearm and ammunition, 18 counts of careless use of firearm, 17 counts of unauthorized possession of prohibited weapon and five counts of fraudulent concealment.

THIRD MAN CHARGED AFTER INCIDENT A third man has been charged after an RCMP search warrant at a Red Deer residence on Jan. 22nd yielded more than 300 grams of cocaine and meth and more than $35,000 cash.

Steven Kenneth Nicholson, 32, of Lloydminster has been charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking and possession of stolen property over $5,000.

Damon Rhys Meidinger, 22, of Red Deer and Justin Davis Yakimchuk, 23, of Blackfalds were charged by RCMP in January in relation to this incident.

RCMP LOOK FOR SUSPECT IN CAR THEFT Red Deer RCMP are looking for public assistance to identify the man in the attached composite sketch after he stole a red 2008 Pontiac G5 on March 1st and assaulted its owner.

The theft occurred shortly after 5 p.m. on March 1st on Ottawa Street in the Oriole Park neighbourhood when the car owner returned to his idling vehicle to find a man in the driver’s seat and a woman in the passenger seat. The vehicle owner attempted to stop the thieves and exchanged blows with the male before the suspects drove away in the stolen car. They were last seen heading eastbound on Taylor Drive. The car has not yet been recovered.

CITY BRIEFS TWO FACTORS AFFECTING BLOOD DONATIONS Schools across the country are beginning to take their March breaks this month, and many Canadians are travelling to tropical climates.

As some travel plans can temporarily affect the ability of blood donors to donate, patients need new and current donors to book an appointment and give before they go. People with the flu are also asked to please re-book as soon as they can. Travel, extreme weather and flu symptoms make maintaining a strong blood supply for all Canadians more difficult during winter months. “We encourage donors to visit our website, blood.ca, to learn how travel to locations that will increase the risk of coming into contact with diseases, such as the Zika virus or malaria, may affect their eligibility,� says Judy Jones, associate director donor relations, Alberta, Saskatchewan and NWT. “They can also learn how various vaccinations might affect their eligibility to donate blood.� “New donation rules to protect the blood supply from the Zika virus are already reducing the number of eligible donors,� she says. “We’re concerned that travel plans and the flu may mean fewer and fewer donors are eligible to donate blood.�

Blood donors who have travelled to locations outside of Canada, the continental United States and Europe are temporarily ineligible to give blood for 21 days after their return to Canada to mitigate the risk of the Zika virus entering the blood supply. “We encourage donors who have been temporarily deferred from donating due to travel to book an appointment to donate when their ineligibility period has passed. “Donated blood is needed to save lives every day. During the travel season, we count on donors to ensure an ample and safe supply of blood and blood products for those in need,� says Judy Jones, associate director donor relations, Alberta, Saskatchewan and NWT. ELIMINATION OF RACIAL DISCRIMINATION Red Deer is the site for two events hosted by the Canadian Race Relations Foundation (CRRF) to mark International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on March 21st – a day set aside to refocus action against racism and build cohesion.

The Red Deer Living Together Symposium, to be held at Westerner Park on March 23rd, is part of a series of cross-country events designed to build a deeper understanding of reconciliation, religious accommodation, multiculturalism and Canadian values.

“We invite the public to join us in conversation about topics including reconciliation and immigration,� said Anita Bromberg, executive director, CRRF. “As Red Deer opens its doors to newcomers, we must engage in timely discussions regarding the building of welcoming and inclusive communities.�

The event will bring together faith and community leaders, academics and diversity champions to discuss how Red Deer and Canada can work towards building diverse and inclusive communities.

It will be held in partnership with the City of Red Deer and an advisory group from some of the Red Deer Welcoming and Inclusive Communities Network including Central Alberta Refugee Effort, John Howard Society Red Deer and Catholic Social Services – Immigration and Settlement.

TRAIL CLOSURES FOR TRANSMISSION LINE UPGRADES Starting late last week, trail closures began as part of AltaLink’s Red Deer Area Transmission Development project.

AltaLink is upgrading their 755L transmission line that runs parallel to 22 St. from west of Red Deer to east of the City limits. Portions of trails along this right-of-way will close while work is underway.

The trail from Gaetz Avenue to Barrett Drive was the first section closed while crews were working in the area on March 11th. The trail east of 40 Avenue along 22 Street near Inglewood, Vanier Woods and Vanier Woods East will close intermittently between March 28th and April 15th.

Signs will be installed in advance of the trail closures indicating the closure timeline. Trails are only closed while work is underway.

This week marks Agriculture Safety Week

BY ERIN FAWCETT RED DEER EXPRESS As this week marks Agriculture Safety Week, which runs March 13th-19th, Red Deer County encourages residents to make use of a subsidy program for safety training or other agriculture-related training.

Red Deer County has offered an incentive program for the past number of years for area farmers who take safety training or agriculture-related training.

Participants must have an agenda and proof of payment to be subsidized.

“It’s a program where we are enabling our Red Deer County residents to take safety programs whether it be St. John’s first aid or chainsaw operation or safe quad training - anything like that,” said Art Preachuk, Ag Services manager with Red Deer County. “We will subsidize the program by 50 per cent, up to $200. It is first come, first served - but we can generally accommodate everyone within a year for the ones who have been coming in so far, anyway.”

Preachuk said farm safety is imperative for any farm or acreage.

“It’s monumental. It’s one of those things that I think once people get a system set up, it becomes second nature because no one wants to get hurt,” he said. “If you have to deal with an accident the initial costs are only 10-15 per cent of that ice berg that is below the water and things that happen after - the lost time, etc.

“It’s in everyone’s interest to be safe.”

‘Be an AgSafe Family by Keeping Kids Safe’.

Canadian Agricultural Safety Week (CASW) is an annual public awareness campaign focusing on the importance of safe agriculture. This year, organizers want to empower farm families with the information they need to help keep kids safe on the farm while preserving the farming lifestyle. The campaign lasts for a week, but keeping kids safe is important all year long, officials say.

“We believe that we can teach the love of agriculture to our children in a safe and healthy way,” said Marcel Hacault, executive director of CASA. “This year we are providing tools and safety advice on agsafetyweek.

ca that can help make farms a safe place for children to grow up.”

The ag family is large; it includes all those who work and care about agriculture. Ag family members come from farming communities, schools, agri-businesses and other organizations that work to make Canadian agriculture vibrant and thriving.

Farm families can work to establish safe play areas where little ones can explore, learn and play without the risk of being hurt or killed. Small children are incredibly curious. Livestock, farm equipment, and other potential hazards can be intriguing, exciting and fascinating.

That’s why it’s so important to set boundaries and establish

rules and guidelines around play areas on the farm.

Farm families can also work on determining tasks for children on the farm that are safe and age- appropriate. Understanding how children develop and grow is key in determining what they are capable of and how they can participate in ag tasks safely.

Farming communities and schools can work to teach children about the hazards they might come across on the farm.

Some ways of talking with children about farm safety can include incorporating farm safety into the school day, or even holding a farm safety day event.

Agri-businesses are in unique positions to influence safety on the farm. As trusted members

of the farming team, agronomists, equipment technicians, and sales representatives all understand their customers’ needs.

Agri-businesses hear the problems of their farming community. Weather woes, equipment prices, input costs, insurance issues and even safety concerns can all be topics of conversation between the agri-business rep and his customer.

Most of all, everyone can be a part of keeping kids safe.

Supervision, training, determining safe play areas, age-appropriate tasks and talking about safety are all a part of being an Agsafe Family.

Area farmers continue to learn more about Bill 6

BY KALISHA MENDONSA RED DEER EXPRESS An information session was recently held in Innisfail to help members of the agriculture community gain a better understanding of the meaning of Bill 6.

The session brought together different ag industry experts to help explain requirements of Bill 6, and to suggest ways of implementing the practices to suit.

One of the featured speakers of the event was Dan Trottier of Totonga Consulting, who specializes in farm safety consultation.

“I think it can be said that agriculture is safe,” Trottier said.

“We’re already being safe, but something we can do better is to set up a program around that safety. It’s about identifying standards for that program, but the process to get there doesn’t have to be complicated.”

Trottier said the way he explains the effects of Bill 6 is by relating it as part of the farmers’ current business plan.

“BILL 6 DOESN’T MEAN HUGE CHANGES. WE FARM SAFE NOW, BUT THIS IS GOING TO MEAN A LITTLE MORE PAPERWORK AND A LITTLE MORE TIME IN THE OFFICE.” WAYNE MCCALLISTER “You’ve got a business plan, you’ve got an accounting plan, you’ve got a safety plan.

“These things are part of any successful business opportunity, in any industry including agriculture,” he said.

“I think helping the ag industry move to that direction and understand it’s part of what they’re doing already is important.

They’re already doing it, they just need to provide some documents that show their due diligence and that comply with regulations.

“It puts the farmers and growers in a position to declare that they are following occupational health and safety codes, acts and things like that.”

Trottier explained that most of what he does as a consultant is tackle jobs like risk assessment and management. He works with farmers to evaluate the risks of their farm and then to teach the farmers how to manage those risks.

“For example, we would look at if operating an auger is more hazardous than operating a grain truck. We look at the possible risks of those two operations and decide where the energy focus should be.

A risk assessment can help farmers understand that.”

He said the session served as a forum for local growers and farmers to ask questions about implementing Bill 6 practices.

As well, it allowed the community to access information from the Alberta government, local safety professionals and other farmers.

Trottier added a positive outcome from

Bill 6 was the act of the community becoming aware of the already available resources that deal with assessing and managing farm safety.

For some of the attendees, like Central Alberta grain farmer Wayne McCallister, the session workshops had proved helpful.

“Bill 6 doesn’t mean huge changes. We farm safe now, but this is going to mean a little more paperwork and a little more time in the office,” McCallister said.

“We want to get it right but we’ve had a little bit of trouble with the clarity given by the government. We just want to know how to get started and what kinds of small steps we can take to get everything right.”

McCallister said he was a little bit worried about the Occupational Health and Safety requirements, simply because it has the potential to draw up some expenses for his farm.

However, he said the session’s expert on the Workers Compensation Board (WCB) was helpful.

“We talked about WCB, and had a great speaker about how that works and how to go about setting that up. The session was really helpful for that, because we got to hear other people ask questions and a lot of things were cleared up for us. As long as we get it right, it’s not too bad.”

Derek Mathon said the Bill affects his farm by having to open a WCB account for his single employee but the cost of doing so was manageable.

Mathon said he felt a little more concerned about the potential costs of implementing measures that comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Acts.

“For example, my farm has 47 grain bins and many don’t have a ladder, so we

might have to put a cage on or make permanent ropes, and it takes time to install that. Those are some of the things that we might have to deal with.”

The Central Alberta Immigrant Women’s Association (CAIWA) is pleased to announce two new programs to the community: the YESS and NESS Programs.

The YESS program is the Youth Employment Success Strategy, and NESS has the same title but for Newcomers.

According to Shawn Hedayat at CAIWA, the programs are doing quite well and have small waiting lists for attendance.

The programs encompass a 10-week learning period, followed by a 12-week employment placement.

“YESS is a 10-week course where people come to learn different essential skills for a workplace,” Hedayat explained.

“We teach them financial skills, computer skills, job-searching and interview skills, cover letters, resumes - it’s a very rich program. One of the big barriers and problems for immigrants who want to work is a lack of Canadian work experience. Because they don’t have Canadian experience, they can’t get a good job.

Without a job, they can’t get experience.

This program breaks the loop.”

The YESS program and NESS program are designed to help youths and newcomers adjust to Canadian work life and gain experience at local organizations.

For the youths, a subsidy is provided through CAIWA to connected employers to help cover the costs of the hiring wages for up to three months.

“Small and medium-sized businesses can have some hesitation to take someone on and train them for the three-month probation time,” Hedayat explained.

“They have overhead costs to train but don’t know if the employee will stay at the job or if they will be successful. The government provides us a subsidy to help to cover the cost of employment during that time.”

The subsidy covers up to 50% of an employee’s wages up to a three-month period. This helps businesses to cover the costs of hiring, training and development of the worker. Unfortunately, the subsidy is not a part of the Newcomer program.

CAIWA invites local organizations to meet with students and to speak about their jobs. This helps the students to figure out a placement that might create an environment where they would want to continue to work after their program with CAIWA is completed.

“During the education portion, we invite different members of industry - managers, owners, hiring agents - to come here and talk about their business. This helps the students become familiar with the different programs and organizations available. If the employers are looking for employees, it’s a good chance to introduce them to our students,” said Hedayat.

In the past, students have been paired with the City of Red Deer, the Public School District, plumbing companies, car dealerships, apprenticeships and several placements with Cosmos industries.

Hedayat said, “We make a profile of each student so we know what they want and are willing to do, and try to find the best employment for them. That’s why we call it our Smart Connection - we try to bring people where they want to go.

If they want to work with their hands, or work with IT programs, we will try to make those connections. We do our best to make it happen, however we need employers to know about us so they can come to us when they need someone.”

He encourages local businesses and agencies to contact CAIWA to see about becoming a Smart Connection partner.

Hedayat said the Newcomer program does not receive a subsidy because it is likely that these people have work experience and are more likely to be able to understand training and other aspects of a new job. He said the difficult part for newcomers is often a change in culture.

“A very common mistake people make is in body language. People might think they have poor communication because of how they act, but really they just aren’t familiar with customs here.”

Provincial Transit Engagement and GreenTRIP third call announced The Alberta government took some big steps in March toward improving public transportation for Albertans across our province – and we all have a say in what the future will bring.

Alberta Transportation has recently launched a provincial engagement plan for regional transit and rural bus service. It’s my hope that everyone will weigh in with their thoughts on what transit in Alberta should look like. How could transit best serve you and your family? Regional public transit and rural bus services are part of our government’s mandate and we want to know what you think the criteria should be for these types of investments.

It’s important to understand that this province – wide conversation about transit builds on the successes and lessons learned from our government’s experience and ongoing program called the Green Transit Incentives Program (GreenTRIP). Recently, my colleague, Transportation Minister Brian Mason, announced the third call for GreenTRIP applications. Our goal with the new provincial transit strategy and funding criteria for future investment in municipal transit initiatives and rural bus service is to move beyond GreenTRIP while maintaining our commitment to public transportation in rural and urban communities. Alberta municipalities that meet the criteria will have access to $415 million to support projects such as buses, parkand-ride facilities and LRT systems. Deadlines for applications has been extended to August 31, 2016 and can be accessed at www.transportation.alberta.ca/5409.htm.

We know Albertans support our plan to enhance public transit as a safe, affordable, accessible and environmentally sustainable transportation option. Everyone needs to be able to get where they need to go. This can be especially challenging for seniors, students, people with disabilities and families working on a Ƃxed income – folks who don’t necessarily drive their own private vehicles.

ENTERTAINMENT Kieran Mercer opens for Marianas Trench this month

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Vancouver’s Kieran Mercer will be in the City this month, opening for Marianas Trench at the Enmax Centrium on March 30th.

His slickly produced, engaging debut EP Help Me Help You was released late last month.

It’s a glittery, polished showcase of Mercer’s remarkable talent, all carefully crafted under the meticulous guidance of producer Jon Levin (Philospher Kings) whose production credits include working with One Direction and Selena Gomez.

“I know that my manager was a big fan of the Philosopher Kings - I was pretty young when they were big, but I do remember them. I think they had that funky, pop, soul vibe to them that he thought would gel well with my sound because I have that side to me too.”

Produced in Los Angeles, Help Me Help You captures its listeners with its distinctive pop sound, delivering the sorrows of a broken heart yet the optimism of a heart not done fighting.

Things kick off with the stylish, engaging Bang Bang (the CD’s first single) which leads right into the simply structured but compelling Let Me Fall.

The acoustic sensibilities of the comparatively mellower Nothing Better Than This showcases Mercer’s striking vocals to a new level, and Help Me Help You touches ever so slightly on a modern country vibe.

“So basically, my manager thought it would be a good idea for me to work with Jon, so I did two trips down to L.A. - a week at a time - and we did three songs each week,” he explained of the CD’s progression. “I came in with every demo, whether it was a couple of lyrics, or a couple of chords - whatever was completed. I would throw them at Jon and he basically took it from there - whether he was interested in something or not.”

Mercer added ultimately, it

proved to be a very collaborative process. “We wanted to do the songs that we were both really excited about,” he said.

“Sometimes when you are writing with someone, or working with a producer, sometimes you don’t always trust their instincts. It’s not an ego thing, but it’s like you are almost fighting for your idea to keep its originality of where it was coming from,” he said. “But right off the bat, I trusted Jon. I totally trusted his instincts. Even at first if I thought an idea was kind of weird, I would try it and it would usually work out in the end.

Combine all that with the magic of working in a studio located right on the famed Hollywood Boulevard, and really, how could you go wrong?

“That was pretty cool.”

Taking this new release on the road, this tour will mark Mercer’s first cross-Canada arena tour - hitting 18 cities across the country over the course of a month.

“I had my first show with them last night,” he explained during a recent chat from a tour stop in Hamilton, Ontario.

“At first you’re kind of nervous with these big shows because you don’t know how people are going to react. But I just go out there and give them the best show possible and promote my own stuff, and it went over real-

ly well. My social media is blowing up,” he added with a laugh.

Previously the front man of celebrated Vancouver group Jackie Valentine and having shared the stage with the likes of Carly Rae Jepsen and Lights, Mercer decided to pursue the journey of establishing a solo career.

The idea to hook up with Marianas Trench on this current tour came about through a mutual admiration that Josh Ramsay and Mercer have for each other’s music. “We are actually label mates, and Josh has always been a big supporter of my music and I’ve always loved his music as well. I know also that this time around, he wanted to give somebody a leg up.

They threw my name out there and he really pushed for me, the band pushed for me and it’s been a great opportunity.”

For Mercer, who was raised in White Rock but now calls Vancouver home, a love for music was sparked early on.

“My parents would always be cranking music,” he recalls.

“It was always kind of in my bones. So from an early age, I started playing music. I had bands when I was in Grade 5,” he chuckles.

“It was mainly my dad pushing all the music - it could be anything from Buddy Holly, the Everly Brothers, the Beatles and lots of the greats from the 1950s and 60s.”

Mercer was essentially drawn to pop stylings, but there have always been other influences that bubble up here and there within a given song. “I’ve just been addicted to melody - it’s always been very important to me.”

And from the start, there really never was a ‘plan b’ in terms of a career path. His sights were set squarely on music.

“I feel like if you want to do this, you have to put 100 per cent into it,” he explained.

“If you are creating a back up plan, you’re almost expecting to fail. You’re putting it out there

that, ‘Hey, this might not work out’. Once you have that idea in your head, I feel like you’re going to stop at some point,” he said.

“There has been no other question about what I’ve wanted to do. It’s always been this -

CAT dives into compelling mystery with Evelyn Strange

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Central Alberta Theatre is offering a new dinner theatre production with a distinctly unique flair - Evelyn Strange runs through to April 9th at the North Hill Quality Inn. Directed by Tara Rorke, the mystery/ drama was penned by Stewart Lemoine.

Things kick off in a luxury opera box in New York City. We meet the beautiful and charming Nina Ferrer who, along with one of her husband’s employees, is settling in for a dreary night of music - that’s how Nina feels anyways. The gentleman, Perry Spangler, is only there because his boss asked him to be there as an escort for Nina.

These two almost instantly connect and all is well until a mysterious woman slips in behind them only to slip out just as quickly. Nina doesn’t even notice her, but Perry does - and so begins a play that has more twists in it than one could imagine.

The woman - who goes by the name of Evelyn Strange - is an oddball all right.

But as the story unfolds, it’s clear she had been stricken by a case of amnesia.

But why? What caused it?

Then a dead man is found in Central Park - whose identity is quite the stunner to the characters in the story. Is there a connection to Evelyn? And if so, how?

Tensions increase as secrets spill out, and it all leads to a compelling conclusion.

I don’t want to say much more about the plot; suffice it to say it’s a terrifically written story by Lemoine, whose polished, sophisticated writing style is a real delight to take in.

And the cast is outstanding from start to finish - three of them will likely be recognizable to local audiences. Nicole Leal, to begin with, is perfect for the role of Evelyn.

She has a knack for appearing to be all there, and then slipping into another vein of behaviour entirely and almost imperceptibly. It’s obviously a complex role, but Leal handles it all with just the right emphasis and poise. Evelyn’s bizarre story comes to light - slowly and steadily - but it’s an enjoyable and enticing tale to take in, thanks to Leal’s thorough understanding of her character. oPaul Sutherland is another one of our local greats, as is Ryan Mattila. They’ve proven their abilities time and again with several City theatre troupes over the years, and it’s no different this time around.

Sutherland has a knack for simply just becoming his characters - his skill at doing so is really amazing. As Spangler, he’s a man of integrity and impeccable manners. And he isn’t truly thrown off by the increasing chaos around him, which is sometimes baffling and downright disturbing. In some ways, he’s the ‘rock’ in the drama, and I can’t think of an actor who really could have nailed it quite as well.

Much the same can be said for Mattila.

As Spangler’s co-employee Lewis Hake, Mattila brings out a certain smarminess that fits with Hake’s dubious motives and unsavoury lifestyle perfectly. But all along, he is also perfectly likable. Not an easy thing to pull off, but Mattila’s range and ability to capture emotions from desperation to charm to anger to devious-

ness shines through at every turn.

The newcomer to the CAT stage is Elysha Snider as Nina. Hopefully we will see much more of her in future productions - Snider is simply terrific as Nina.

This woman, like Evelyn, has an abundance of secrets and inevitably, she has to face the truth. Also, Nina is on the outside an upstanding citizen - but her life behind the scenes isn’t spotless by any means. Snider brings it all to the table with style and emotional force - Nina is always fun to watch whether it’s in her playful dialogue or blistering scolding of Hake.

Congrats, of course, must go to Rorke.

I can only imagine what a blast it was to put this play together, and to have

the chance to work with such a gifted bunch of people. Her dedication to offering audiences a well-crafted play that is technically precise while still retaining an authenticity to the period (the 1950s) topped off with just the right amount of emotional push is really terrific.

Kudos also to costume designer Jesslyn Miller for capturing the look of the 1950s so well.

I’ve said it before, but it’s worth repeating - it’s good to see CAT treading more and more into this kind of territory. It’s fresh, intriguing, a challenge to casts and a treat for audiences.

Annual Mad Hatter Tea Party for cancer support

The event will be held at the Black Knight Inn on March 19th from 1-4 p.m. Tickets are $25 each.

Attendants can expect an afternoon of entertainment, silent auction, door prizes, raffles and a cash bar, all the while supporting a worthy cause - hats and wigs for cancer patients.

All proceeds raised will go towards this cause and stay in Red Deer, said Sharon Schultz, founder and organizer of the Mad Hatter Tea Party.

“The event came about because of the need for hats and wigs for cancer patients.

It was a way to garner funds and hats. We

want to make this a little bit easier for cancer patients - they are tired from treatment and yet we know that head coverings are extremely important not just for sun, but for warmth and protection,” she said.

The cause is near and dear to Schultz’s heart as her sister and husband both passed away from cancer.

“My sister had been a 20-plus year cancer patient and it’s the only thing she ever indicated was that she was tired and that she had to go get more hats,” she said. “I asked some people I worked with about having a tea and we’re going to donate hats to cancer patients and by the end I had 80 hats.

“I knew if I could do that, than I knew we could go bigger where we could have an event and 100 per cent of the proceeds go to head coverings for cancer and it stays in

“We will start stocking that and I also keep the Cancer Society office stocked with hats as well.”

As for this weekend’s event, there will be a special guest and cancer survivor who will be honoured, there will be entertainment including a visit from an Elvis impersonator, a balloon artist and nail painters.

“The rest of the time is just socializing and enjoying each other’s company,” said Schultz. “There will also be prizes for the best theme table - we’ve had cowboy themes and golf themes. It’s a really fast-paced afternoon.”

Reflecting on doctor-assisted death in Canada Something happened today that I thought would never happen!

JONES At 92 years of age I have asked the Registrar of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario to reinstate my medical license which I reluctantly gave up at the age of 87.

Why? Because of a shameful and despicable event in Alberta this week.

Ms. S, a resident of Calgary, was dying of ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), better known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

Totally paralyzed and close to choking to death in her own mucus, she requested doctor assisted death. Justice Sheilah Martin of the Alberta court decided that, with the consent of two doctors and no psychiatric assessment, Ms. S was granted the right to proceed. Justice Martin has my congratulations.

What is deplorable and reprehensible is that this dying patient had to be transported from Calgary to British Columbia to peacefully die by lethal injection.

It appears that not one doctor in Calgary was willing to offer this humane service. Dr. Wiebe, who ultimately assisted in her death, was located by a network in the Netherlands.

Dying is never easy but ALS is a horrific malady.

Inch by inch paralysis gradually and insidiously spreads throughout the entire body, and its progress is as sure as night follows day. The final phase is total paralysis.

Patients are literally ‘locked’ inside their bodies. What makes it more terrifying is that the mind remains intact.

Death occurs when respiratory muscles finally become more and more paralyzed, patients cannot cough, and they drown in their own mucus.

It’s as close to hell as anyone can imagine. How any physician, regardless of religion, race or colour, can stand by and watch this grueling struggle hour after hour and de-

cline to do anything to ease the suffering, boggles my imagination.

One of Harvard’s most distinguished medical professors once remarked, “The secret of caring for the patient is caring for the patient.”

But after years of caring for his own patients he also developed a devastating illness. Just before he committed suicide he left a note saying, “It’s wrong that society forced me to end my life this way.”

I have often criticized the legal profession.

But in this case Justice Martin refused to allow this case to be defeated by technical or legalistic grounds. And she fought off others in the legal and medical community who opposed her decision. After all, what sense did it make that others wanted another psychiatric assessment while this courageous woman on the day of her death could hardly breathe?

Ms. S has now entered history as being the first judicially authorized assisted death in Canada.

Now the Federal Government has a few months to draft a set of rules to be followed by

doctors willing to participate in assisted death.

I have stressed in a previous column that this issue should be a matter of personal choice.

But with personal choice also comes responsibility.

This means stating clearly whether you say ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ to assisted death. The only sure way that families, doctors and the courts learn of your choice is by stating this decision in a Living Will while you are of sane mind.

Be sure to sign it and

make copies for your family, doctor and lawyer.

As an added precaution I’ve also suggested that people can wear a wrist or neck piece stating that you are for or against assisted death. Surely this should satisfy those who are so opposed to it.

Will the College renew my medical license so I’m able to assist in this one specific purpose?

I hope it will until other doctors inform Dying with Dignity Canada that they are available to patients

who request a peaceful assisted death.

I believe Hippocrates would agree that it is irrational and inhumane to see anyone drown in their own mucus.

Then to add insult to injury to force that person, already near death, to be transferred to another province for this service.

Shame on the medical profession if this tragic scenario is repeated.

Guinness BBQ chicken I was going to make you cook a Guinness flavoured stew but with this beautiful spring-like weather let’s barbecue. You need a bit of time to allow for marinating. Four hours minimum but over night is ideal.

1 chicken cut up or a couple of breasts, four thighs and four drumsticks 1 tsp. seasoned salt - Lawry’s or any seasoned salt your husband brought home from a golf tournament will do.

They are really good.

1 can or bottle of Guinness 1 tbsp. dark sugar 1 tbsp. fresh lemon juice 1 tbsp. vegetable oil 1 tbsp. dark molasses 1/8 tsp. hot sauce - add more if needed Rub the chicken with the seasoned salt.

Arrange the chicken in a single layer in a shallow baking dish.

Mix all the remaining ingredients in

COLDWELL a small bowl; pour over chicken. Cover the dish and refrigerate at least 4 hours but over night is best. Turn the chicken pieces several times during the refrigeration time.

Preheat the BBQ to 300. Cook with a low direct heat so the chicken doesn’t burn. Place the chicken skin side up on the grill. Cook so it does not burn turning and adding marinade to each piece. Continue to turn while browning each piece. This can take 30 plus minutes until each piece reaches 165 F. Always check the internal safe cooking temperature away from the heat of the grill.

Serve with a salad and your favourite sliced bread loaf.

To be prepared in the playoffs you have to be ready for any situation that can occur, so I think as a group we’ve always been working on making sure we’re prepared to execute in any situation,” said Queens’ Head Coach Kelly Coulter.

The Queens didn’t get off to the best of starts during best of five series, which kicked off on March 3rd at the Red Deer Arena, losing game one 2-1 to the Ooks.

It wasn’t for lack of trying, though, as the Queens put 36 shots on goal that game, with 21 of them coming in the third period alone.

NAIT goalie Tehnille Gard proved to be a tough challenge for the Queens’ offense all series long, stopping 30 shots or more on three separate occasions, including two 40-plus save performances.

The game one loss, however, was the only one the Queens would give up in the series, as they went on to sweep the next three games to clinch the banner, starting with game two at NAIT, in which they claimed a decisive 5-1 victory.

“The girls showed a lot of perseverance and belief in themselves that they could pull out the victory,” Coulter said, adding the team has been good at playing from behind all season long.

Game three in Red Deer was about as close as you can get in the score department, though the shots column tells a slightly different story.

After a back and forth start to the game, the Queens managed to strike first in the opening frame as Jayna Kitchen notched her second goal of the playoffs with the assist coming from Keinyn Nordel at 17:22 of the first period, during which RDC out shot the Ooks 18-9.

It didn’t take long for NAIT to respond, though. Just nine minutes into the middle period, Lindsey Roth managed to beat RDC goaltender Jen West to tie it up at one goal apiece heading into the final frame.

Despite the close score, the Queens were the front runners during game three. After two periods they had out shot the Ooks 31-17 and showed no signs of slowing down, so it was only a matter of time until they managed to find a way past Gard.

It took another 16 minutes for them to do just that, though, as Gard continued to stymie Red Deer’s offense before a scramble in front of NAIT’s net allowed Jessica Anderson to jam in a rebound off of a Julia Murrell shot for the game winner.

“It’s a war of attrition and I think the girls understand that. We have to continue to do what we do well in the next game,” Coulter said after the third game.

The win gave RDC a 2-1 series lead and a chance to win it all on Friday night in Edmonton.

“It started out very good for us in the first period. We were up 2-0 at the end of 20 (minutes),” Coulter said of the fourth game, which was easily the closest of the series. RDC’s first two of the game were power play markers by Emily Swier (assists from Rikki Leonard and Kaely McMurtry) and Jade Petrie (assist by Nikki Connor).

The lead, however, was short-lived.

Just four minutes in the the second period, Carlin Boey of the Ooks managed to beat West and cut the lead in half. Three minutes later, NAIT tied it up with a goal by Chelsea Gauchier. Just two minutes after that they took a 3-2 lead with a goal by Roth.

“It was a bit of an emotional roller coaster because we were down 3-2 after two periods. Some interesting goals were scored throughout the series, so it was a very tight emotional roller coaster.”

To make matters worse for the Queens, Gard was playing arguably her best game of the series and managed to stop all 12 shots thrown at her during the second period alone.

It wasn’t until the final minute of the third period that RDC was able to break through, as Ashely Graf scored on a Cassidy Anderson assist to knot it up with just 15 seconds remaining and force overtime.

The first overtime was West’s time to shine.

“I think what we had told them as a coaching staff between the first overtime period and the second one was we’re leading the series, so what we want to do is continue to create turnovers but continue to play our game,” Coulter said, adding the approach worked.

Swier was the overtime hero for the Queens as she put it past Gard six minutes into the second overtime frame for the game, and championship winning goal.

“I was ecstatic for our players. Many of them have been here over the years and hadn’t achieved a gold medal so I’m extremely happy and proud of them. Probably just a sense of satisfaction on the bench and very proud to see the girls with smiles on their faces.”

This is the first time the Queens have won the championship since 2002.

KINGS VOLLEYBALL EARN NATIONAL TITLE

The Red Deer College Kings men’s volleyball team are the new Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) champions.

The Kings managed to retain their title on Saturday night with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 27-25) victory over the Titan de Limoilou in front of a crowd of over 1,300 people at Douglas College in New Westminster, B.C. during the final game of the CCAA Championships this past weekend.

RDC’s win in the final was the culmination of a terrific trio of games that saw them earn a one-sided 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-16) victory over St. Thomas University in the quarter finals before and a come from behind 3-2 (25-18, 19-25, 19-25, 26-24, 15-11) nail biter against defending champions Camosun before defeating Limoilou in the final.

This is the second time in three years that the Kings have won the title, with the last one coming in 2014, and is the 12th time the team has claimed the CCAA crown in its history.

Luke Brisbane was the tournament MVP for the Kings while Riley Fiesen and Nic Dubinsky were among the first team all stars.

After getting down early in the series with a 3-2 loss to Wheatland in game one, the Indy Chiefs managed to battle their way back and take control of game two at home with a 3-2 victory to stay alive and set up a third and final matchup.

Game three didn’t start well for the Indy Chiefs as Wheatland managed to put away two quick goals early in the first, including one within the first two minutes of the game.

But Red Deer wouldn’t be beaten. The comeback started with a power play marker by Blake Mahura late in the opening frame to cut Wheatland’s lead to just one goal.

It took until halfway through the third period for the Indy Chiefs to break through again and tie the game, this time on an even strength tally

The team will play either Calgary, the Regina Pats, or the Moose Jaw Warriors.

The truth about ‘jingle mail’ There have been many stories on the news in the last little bit about a surge in jingle mail.

PIKKERT What is jingle mail you ask? It is when a homeowner is no longer able to make their mortgage payments due to a health issue, job loss or other life event so they choose to mail the keys to their mortgage lender thereby surrendering their home.

The bank knows they have the house to do with what they will and the clients carry on unencumbered to deal with their life. The problem is that this is not how it works.

At all. You cannot step away from your mortgage obligations and the consequences of not paying the mortgage in this way. I do not care what Bob at the coffee shop told you his brother did, it is simply not true. Let’s look at this myth and debunk it.

So what can you expect exactly?

If you stop paying your mortgage, for whatever reason, the bank and the mortgage insurers have legal recourse to come after you.

I am not a lawyer and so I will not get into the particulars but you need to know that you are liable for the legal fees in-

curred by the lender to foreclose upon the property, any shortfall claim from the lender, the realtor fees to sell the home, and the loss on the mortgage.

These costs add up very quickly and are into the tens of thousands before you know it.

They can take legal action against you even after the house has been sold to a new person. Yes, you are responsible for them and you agreed to be so in the mortgage documents you have signed.

Another point to consider is this, once you have been foreclosed upon the chances of you getting another mortgage are next to zero.

The foreclosure will be reported on your credit report, to the bank and to the mortgage insurer if you had purchased the home with less than 20% down.

Lenders are not likely to lend you the funds needed to purchase when you were clearly unable to meet your obligations the first time.

So what should you do when life has left you unable to make your mortgage payment?

Talk to the lender BEFORE things get out of hand to see if you can come to an agreement. If you don’t get anywhere that route, call your mortgage default mortgage insurance provider directly.

Remember that big insurance premium which was added to your mortgage?

It can come in very handy in this situation. Those companies do not want to see

you mail your keys in as it is less expensive to help you now than it is to payout on a claim later.

The three companies who provide mortgage default insurance in Canada are CMHC, Genworth and Canada Guaranty.

Each has their own policy for these situations, as do the lenders, but they can help in a variety of ways.

1. Capitalized arrears - occurs when the money that was past due on your mortgage, along with any interest and penalties you have acquired, is just tacked onto the mortgage balance that you owe.

2. Increased amortization - the overall length of the mortgage can be stretched which will reduce the monthly payments.

3. Partial or shared payment plan - they may reduce your costs to interest only payments or a reduction to an interest plus a small amount to the principle.

4. Deferred payments – your payments can be deferred up to six months.

5. Promissory note - the insurer can actually lend you the funds to catch up, often at 0% interest.

6. Assisted shortfall sale – if the worst comes to pass and there is no way for you to keep the home, the insurer can assist in a shortfall sale. The benefit of this is that it leaves you in the position that once you are back on your feet, you can be approved for another mortgage by the lenders AND the insurers.

It is very important to note that each lender and insurer are different in their policies so you may not be able to access all of these solutions. If you put more than 20% down you are not likely to call upon the assistance of the default insurance provider.

Call your lender, your mortgage specialist and your default insurance provider as soon as you think you may be in trouble.

There are also insurance companies out there offering job loss and disability insurance so consider those options while you are healthy and employed.
