Shooting victim not expected to survive Incident linked to Townline Hill conflict Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) announced on Monday that it has taken over the investigation into the double shooting that took place last week on Hawthorne Avenue in Abbotsford.

IHIT spokesperson Stephanie Ashton said at a press conference at the Abbotsford Police

Department that one of the men injured in the incident is not expected to survive his injuries.

The other victim remains in critical, but stable, condition.

The two men, ages 21 and 22, were shot at about 9:20 p.m. Thursday (March 10) at a residence in the 33300 block of Hawthorne Avenue.

The home is part of an eight-house complex located between Greer and Highview streets off of McCallum Road and south of Highway 1.

Ashton said although the exact motive of the shooting is not yet clear, it does appear to be connected to the ongoing Townline Hill conflict, which involves two gangs in a violent battle for drug turf in west Abbotsford.

Neither victim has been identified, and Ashton said names will only be released if it is in the public’s interest or a matter of public safety. At the press conference, Ashton read Continued on A3

Driver ‘lucky’ to survive crash

Van hits concrete building; 90-day driving ban issued A man whose vehicle violently crashed into a concrete building in Abbotsford on Sunday morning is lucky to be alive, police say.

The incident took place at about 8 a.m. in the area of Marshall Road and Marshall Place in west Abbotsford. It appears the 27-year-old Abbotsford driver hit a curb, and his van flew about 25 feet before crashing into the building.

The van ended up on its side and was so crushed that the roof was touching the steering wheel.

When fire crews arrived, they discovered that the driver – the vehicle’s only occupant – had freed himself by kicking out the front window.

“This individual is very lucky to be alive today, based on the significant damage to the vehicle,” said Abbotsford Police Sgt. Marcus Senft at the scene.

The driver was taken to hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.

He was issued an administrative driving prohibition, which is a 90-day driving ban issued to drivers affected by alcohol.

Investigators on the scene taped off the forested area between the grocery store and the former Milestones restaurant location.

That area leads to Lonzo Creek Park, located directly behind Save-On, and is known to be inhabited by homeless

people.

Some bystanders at the scene were upset and hugging one another. Jesse Wegenast and Ward Draper of 5 and 2 Ministries – who provide services and advocacy for the homeless – were on hand to lend support, as were staff with the Salvation Army.

Wegenast and Draper confirmed to The News that a homeless person had died, but could not provide any other details.

The man’s name is not being released.

Body of homeless man found in park The death of a homeless man in Lonzo Creek Park behind Save-On-Foods on Sumas Way is no longer being investigated as suspicious, police announced yesterday (Tuesday).

Fire crews received 114 calls for service Abbotsford Fire and Rescue Service crews saw a five-fold increase in calls last Thursday thanks to the windstorm that rocked the city that morning, Chief Don Beer told city council at Monday’s meeting.

Wind gusts hit 95 km/h, bringing down trees around the city.

Crews received 114 calls for service due to the windstorm, Beer said. Normally, the department responds to 20 to 30 calls in a day.

Beer said an emergency operations centre set up Thursday morning worked as planned.

Officials from multiple departments convened to deal with the emergency.

“Staff made this event a success,” he said.

Officials were ready to reconvene Monday, after another storm hit Abbotsford on Sunday night, but didn’t need to do so.

Forecasts called for wind gusts to hit 90 km/h overnight, and some gusts were registered exceeding 85 km/h.

However, the storm didn’t match that from last week, although Beer said rescue crews did respond to “eight or nine” wind-related calls.

Owner of handkerchiefs wanted An Abbotsford woman hopes to find the owner of a special package that she found recently while at the Highstreet shopping centre on Mt. Lehman Road.

Johanna, who didn’t want her last name used, was in the underground parking area near Walmart on the morning of Feb. 29 or March 1, when she spotted a unique box on the ground by some shopping carts.

She lifted the lid and found a collection of carefully folded handkerchiefs, some appearing to be quite old.

Johanna believes the items have sentimental value to someone.

“I know what it is like to have an old

handkerchief, one that my great-grandmother embroidered. It has survived two world wars and also survived my

family fleeing and travelling from place to place for two years during and after World War Two,” she said.

Johanna wonders if the box is discarded loot from a break-in or whether it was accidentally dropped by the owner.

City requests funding for bike overpass

Council voted Monday to ask the province to fund two projects to improve the city’s bike and pedestrian infrastructure, including an overpass over Highway 1.

The city will ask for provincial funding for a cycle path on Salton Road and a cycling/pedestrian overpass over the highway. The cost is billed at $5.75 million, and the city is seeking the funds through the province’s BikeBC

program, which is providing $6 million in funding to communities this year.

The city says the project would augment its UDistrict Neighbourhood Plan and create a better link between the area and the rest of Abbotsford.

Alternately, the city also suggested it would be amenable to funds for a cheaper version of the project, without a separated cycle path on Salton, which would cost $4.9 million.

The city also asked for funding for a pedestrian/bike light at Valley Road on Highway 11 that would connect two major segments of the Discovery Trail.

A staff report suggested a light, along with road improvements, a pedestrian rail crossing, and a 30-metre wooden boardwalk would provide better access to Willband Creek Park and improve the trail for users.

Missing woman sought WINDLE The Abbotsford Police Department is asking for the public’s help in trying to track down a missing woman.

Allison Windle, 30, was reporting missing last Thursday (March 10) and was still missing as of press deadline yesterday.

She was last seen in the early-morning hours that day and was wearing grey pants, a white T-shirt and a brown hooded sweatshirt.

Windle is Caucasian, 5’ 1”, 120 pounds with dark brown hair and brown eyes.

An end to possibility Three separate car crashes claimed five young lives – including that of a Langley teen – and put several more in jeopardy during one of the deadliest weekends on B.C. roads in recent memory.

In Vernon, two women, both 21, were killed March 6, when a pickup carrying five people missed a curve and rolled. Speed and alcohol are both considered factors in that tragedy.

Two days earlier in Cranbrook, two young men aged 17 and 19 were killed when their pickup struck a tree.

And March 5 in Mission, 15-year-old Lidia Ramos of Langley was killed when the car she was in failed to negotiate a turn on a slippery road and slid down an embankment. Speed is cited as the likely reason the car left the road.

But whatever the cause of each crash, the result is the same. Five more lives have been needlessly lost, and their families are now facing the future without a beloved child.

“Think about the passengers you have with you,” pleaded Lidia’s mother, Angela.

“There’s no need to speed. No one needs to lose their child or sibling.”

It’s a simple message, but one that doesn’t always get through.

Car crashes remain the leading cause of death among teenagers, and one-third of crashes involving 16- and 17-year-old drivers occur between the hours of 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., when fewer drivers are out on the roads.

According to BCAA, drivers aged 16 to 19 in Canada have a fatality rate nine times as high as that of drivers aged 45 to 54.

Whether it’s a sense of invincibility or an inability to connect action and consequence without first-hand experience, it’s hard to say.

What we do know is that the deaths leave many other big questions unanswered.

Who and what could these young people have become? What might they have accomplished, given the chance?

The possibilities were once endless.

Now, they’re non-existent.

B.C. Views As the B.C. government spends millions on an international brand campaign with the recycled slogan “Super, Natural B.C.,” another brand identity has spread across Canada.

This one’s unintentional. It hit a new peak last week with the arrival of two young men from Saskatchewan, who were given one-way tickets to Vancouver and Victoria by typically burdened social services ministry staff in North Battleford.

Sorting through the blizzard of soothing sound bites and sympathetic TV clips, a clearer picture emerges.

In his initial interview with the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix, Charles NeilCurly, at 23 the elder of the two, said he decided to head west when shelter staff told him his time had run out and he asked for bus tickets to B.C. “When they asked if I had a place to

go, I just said, ‘yeah’,” Neil-Curly said. “I was going to the next homeless shelter anyway.”

Transients and panhandlers aren’t the only ones who say whatever they figure will get them through another day.

Politicians do it too.

Admitting she knew little about the arrivals, Premier Christy Clark suggested that both were mentally ill and deserve every support the province can give them.

B.C. housing czar Rich Coleman has also demonstrated factual flexibility as he presides over the creation of his latest single-room-occupancy drug ghetto in a residential neighbourhood in Victoria.

After quietly proposing a closed-down nursing home called Mount Edwards Court as a temporary solution to the filthy “tent city” that sprang up on provincial property last fall, Coleman abruptly announced from his Langley office Feb. 5 that the building had been bought and partly renovated for $4 million. It would house 38 people for up to a year.

I asked him if the purchase meant the conversion of Mount Edwards into permanent “low-barrier” housing for 100 people was a “done deal,” as area resi-

dents believe. “They’re wrong,” Coleman indignantly replied, and there would be community consultation over the next year.

In subsequent comments to reporters, he said the province doesn’t really need city zoning, but will apply for it anyway.

On Feb. 24, Coleman was asked if he is concerned that the 88 housing units at two locations would fill up and other transients would arrive to take their place. By that time the tent squat appeared to have about 100 people in residence, with the usual overdoses, violence and prostitution.

Coleman assured us it hasn’t happened in Abbotsford or Maple Ridge, where tent camps have finally been cleaned up after shelters and housing were provided.

The next day, he was asked if transitional accommodations would be sufficient to end the camp.

“They’re not actually all that transitional,” Coleman replied. “We’ll take Mount Edwards through a zoning process. We’ve got about 100 beds there.

We’ve bought the building so it’s hardly transitional. We’ve permanently done that.”

Fast forward to March 11. The 38 Mount Edwards spaces are full, another 40 rooms and camping spaces at a former youth custody centre are almost full, and the province applies for a court order to clear the Victoria camp.

A representative of the advocacy group Together Against Poverty Society goes on local radio to pledge legal support for the campers. How many are there now? At least 100, he says.

Meanwhile in Maple Ridge, where the “homeless” problem is all fixed, Coleman has just extended temporary shelter funding and paid $5.5 million for a 61-room motel to fix it some more.

Andrea Wetteland did an excellent job in your article, “Giving with one hand, taking with the other,” of showing the impact on her related to the government’s decision to increase the bus pass fee from the current $45 to $624.

Andrea, along with many others in this community, will have to make a decision of putting food on the table at the expense of losing what she described as her “lifeline” by giving up her bus pass. Should she decide to retain her bus pass, the real impact of increased disability amount is reduced to $25!

What has been missed in the coverage to date is

Extraordinary people I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the extraordinary contribution of the Arab Club at University of the Fraser Valley to the refugees in Abbotsford.

My family accepted a Syrian family about a month ago through Mennonite Central Committee. We have set them up with doctors and dentists and school and apartment, and groceries and jobs, etc.

What has been very unique is the contribution from the Arab Club at UFV. From the outset, they have gone above and beyond. When we were initially proposed a refugee family, we gathered our resources accordingly and, recognizing the language/ cultural barrier, reached out to the Arab Club.

They responded positively and immediately. One of the club members offered to accompany us to the Vancouver Airport to assist us with the family’s arrival and with translating. Since then, there have been multiple members of the club who have, on a daily basis, checked in with the family, met with, shared meals with, taken them shopping, taken them to the mosque, etc.

These are UFV students who have themselves come from another country to obtain an education in Canada. In their spare time, on a volunteer basis, they have been absolutely instrumental in welcoming our refugee family to Abbotsford. In addition to this, they have extended their assistance to other Syrian families.

These individuals deserve recognition for their unconditional devotion to recognizing the need and acting accordingly. These truly are extraordinary people contributing in a meaningful way to the community of Abbotsford and the welcoming and integration of refugees. This is a success story.

After the government claws back the bus pass fee there won’t be enough to cover the rent increase this year, let alone increases in other living expenses. The base amount for those on benefits has been eroded on an annual basis over the past nine years.

Are those people on disability benefits “better off” now? It is not all that complicated: do the math! They are entering their 10th year with no real increase in benefit amounts. Oh, I just noticed that BC Hydro is looking for a four per cent increase and the landlord just raised the rent again by 2.9 per cent, and have you seen the cost of vegetables lately?

The parents of four-year-old twin sisters Jayde and Skyla Robinson, who have spastic quadriplegia, are seeking donations for a vehicle to help transport the girls.

Their father says they have smiles that “light up the world.”

And they’ll be smiling even more if they can get the vehicle they need to give them the freedom taken by their limbs that don’t fully function.

Skyla and Jayde’s family is asking the community to donate to their GoFundMe page, so they can buy the $62,000 liftequipped van they say they desperately need.

The twins, now four, were two years old when they were both diagnosed with spastic quadriplegia, a type of cerebral palsy that affects all four limbs.

The girls’ parents, Alex Robinson and Desiree Gauld, currently have to lift their wheelchairs by hand into their van, a two-person job.

Gauld said she is unable to fit the wheelchairs in when she has her stepson with her and doesn’t have her husband’s help.

Desiree worries that her husband, who works in a Surrey steel mill earning the family’s sole source of income, may not be able to work in the future if he continues so much awkward heavy lifting.

Desiree said they aren’t able to do all the activities they wish they could, because of this limitation.

“It’s very difficult.

Obviously, it’s not ideal but we try and keep on going and try to bring the girls to everything possible.”

Desiree said that while her family has received significant help from the government and charities like Variety, they can’t afford the expensive van.

“We’ve exhausted all other avenues.”

Local guild crafts quilts for Syrian refugees Members of an Abbotsford quilting guild are hand-crafting quilts to warmly welcome Syrian refugee families as they arrive in their new homes in the Lower Mainland.

“We particularly wanted to make the government-sponsored refugees feel welcome,” said Judy Johnson, one of the women spearheading the group’s effort.

“Since they are arriving at a colder time

of year, we thought that quilts would help them keep warm and offer a warm welcome.”

The group cut, pressed and sewed together seven quilt tops in just one day.

The group’s members have offered many finished quilts to families in need in addition to the ones started on Feb. 27, and other members are working on more gift quilts at home.

The group is work-

ing with Abbotsford and Chilliwack Community Services

to distribute the quilts to refugee families.

Laura Miron, another

organizer, said “We really want to thank the community services groups for accepting our offer so enthusiastically and taking charge of giving out

the quilts. They are so busy right now and they found time to meet with us and take this on.”

The Fraser Valley Modern Quilt Guild is

Farming has always been a family affair. For those in the Fraser Valley whose farms have been in their families for generations and are now worth millions in both land and quotas, questions may arise as to whether to sell or hold onto the farm.

Succession planning for farmers is not unlike growing crops in that it may take years to maximize the yield. In Canada, qualified farms and farming corporations can be passed tax free to children in life or through a will, provided the children live in Canada and receive their shares directly. Farming corporation may avoid thousands in probate fees by utilizing techniques such as separate corporate wills. The rules are strict and the wrong trust in a will or an out of country child could result in tax consequences burdening the farm.

Challenges can arise if some children are active in the farm and others are not. In such cases, it may be prudent to transfer control before death so as to avoid challenges to wills. Farming children may be gifted or purchase voting shares, while other children can be given shares with limited income rights.

For farming families thinking of selling the farm in today’s hot market, they risk losing out on hundreds of thousands of dollars in tax savings by not planning in advance.

Each family member who owns part of a qualifying farm or farming corporation may be able to legally avoid paying taxes on the first million dollars on a sale provided they have owned the property for at least three years.

To take advantage of the capital gains exemptions in anticipation of a future sale, estate planning lawyers and accountants will often reorganize the farm structure 3-4 years in advance to gift shares to adult children and their spouses. For instance, a couple with four children may receive 6 million dollars tax free. These tax exemptions tend not to apply to hobby farms or farms that merely supplement other family income.

Legal advice should be sought.

I always encourage farmers to sit down with their families to plan ahead.

Local teen dances on stage with Justin Bieber

Friday night was special for Justin Bieber fans from across the Lower Mainland, as he played a sold-out show at Rogers Arena. But it was extra special for one Abbotsford Belieber.

Kelly Blancas, 13, not only saw the pop megastar in concert for the first time, she got to meet him backstage and dance with him onstage in front of thousands of fans.

Kelly, who has been dancing for 10 years, was one of four dancers who won the spot on stage with Bieber, after submitting a video of herself dancing to the song “Children.”

She was at the dance studio when her mom phoned, telling her she was going to perform with her idol.

“I was in shock,” she says. “I was crying.”

Bieber is performing with dancers like Blancas at every show on his worldwide Purpose tour.

Kelly said she spoke with the singer briefly before the show.

“He was really nice ... He just asked how we were, if we were nervous.”

And nervous she was.

“My palms were sweating like crazy.”

The performance went off without a hitch, despite the nerves, and Kelly was able to enjoy the rest of the concert from the pit, right in front of the stage.

When asked if she would like to dance with Bieber in the future as a full-time job, Kelly re-

Loved ones light candles in memory of three farmworkers killed in a 2007 van crash on Highway 1 in Abbotsford.

A candlelight vigil was held Sunday afternoon at the Golden Tree Monument, created in their memory, behind Clearbrook Library. The women died when the van carrying them, and 14 others, to work skidded out of control on the Trans-Canada Highway. Subsequent investigations found the employer at fault for operating an improperly maintained vehicle.

King marks 20 years King Traditional Elementary School celebrated 20 years of education in Abbotsford last Wednesday with an aboriginal song and dance, speeches, kids’ activities and dinner.

The school is the oldest of five traditional schools in the district.

Traditional schools are public schools which adhere to a more structured format, with high expectations for behaviour and uniforms for all students.

The school’s most special aspect is the “co-ordinated effort” between teachers and parents in the children’s education, according to school board trustee Cindy Schafer.

The wonders of creation and the blindness of unbelief Bert Warden Contributor

It was none other than the Scottish author and politician John Buchan, Baron Tweedsmuir (1875-1940) the 15th Governor General of Canada who said, “An atheist is a man without any invisible means of support.”

But regardless of our outward profession of religion, I am afraid many of us are closet atheists. In common parlance we invoke the Almighty – “Oh my God!” to express joy/surprise or “God help me!” when in danger – but it’s just a mode of expression.

The truth is we have a strong belief in what we can see and touch but almost zero belief in the invisible, and that is to our detriment.

For you see, though God is indeed invisible, the whole of creation testifies to His existence. The very use of the term “creation” embraces the idea of a creator. If the universe just came together by chance, then what resulted is not a creation. What it would be, I do not know.

The English poet William Cowper (17311800) penned the following words, “God moves in a mysterious way His wonders to perform. He plants His footsteps in the sea, And rides upon the storm.” And in the last stanza of his poem says, “Blind unbelief is sure to err, And scan His work in vain. God is His own interpreter, And He will make it plain.”

Of course Cowper was really just echoing the thoughts expressed in Psalm 19:1-2: “The heavens are telling the glory of God and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands. Day to day pours forth speech and night to night reveals knowledge”.

What a pity it is that we should marvel at and revel in the beauty of a glorious sunset or the grandeur of a clear star-studded night sky and have no one to thank for it! But how satisfying to realize that all this was created by a loving God for the enjoyment of us humans — If not for us, then for whom? A cow cannot appreciate the beauty of a sunset nor a pig the scent of a rose.

The Apostle Paul reiterates nature’s strong witness to the reality of God’s existence. Speaking of humankind’s denial of God’s existence from ancient times, he says: “ ... that which is known about God is evident within them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God they did not honor Him as God or give thanks but they became futile in their speculations and their foolish heart was darkened.” (Rom. 1:19-21) The orderly operation of the universe and the reliability and immutability of the seasons and the laws of nature all testify to the existence of a creative and controlling power over all. If not God, then who? That very reliability and immutability are the basis for the development of scientific investigation as we know it.

humans learn about the marvels and mysteries of creation, both the micro and the macro – and we know tons more than any generation before us – the less credibility we give to the Creator. How true it is that there are none so blind as those who will to not see.

And this, of course, is why we need more than just general revelation about God (that which we see in nature) in order to know Him, and is also why he sent his only Son (Jesus Christ, the God man) to reveal himself to us and to die for our sins.

Jesus said, “The god of this world (Satan) has blinded the minds of those who believe not lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and I should save them.”

Life is short, death is sure, sin is the cause but Christ the cure. Believe in Him today and begin enjoying life to the full!

Falconer signs with UBC Grade 12 W.J. Mouat student Elijah Falconer will get a chance to help defend the Vanier Cup this fall.

Falconer officially committed to the UBC Thunderbirds football team on March 7, and joins the team that upset the Canadian Interunivesity Sport football world last fall by winning the top prize.

The 6’6” wide receiver starred for years on the Hawks, and had 333 yards receiving and two touchdowns in six games played last season with Mouat.

He was also part of the Hawks senior boys basketball team that placed fourth in B.C. at the 4A provincials on Saturday.

Falconer joins Mouat grad Levi Hua and Bateman grad Tanner Friesen on the team.

Both players were part of last year’s championship squad.

The Thunderbirds return to the gridiron to begin the defence of their Vanier Cup championship in the fall.

Langley’s Karen Lepine is heading to nationals again.

The defending Canadian women’s masters champion is set to defend her national title after a successful showing at the B.C. masters in Abbotsford, which wrapped up on Sunday.

The Lepine rink, made up of Diane Foster (third), Susan Beuk (second), Donna Christian (lead) and Craig Lepine (coach) posted a record of six wins and one loss in round robin play to enter the playoff round ranked first. The Abbotsford Pilots playoff run came to a crashing thud on Friday.

In a must-win game, the Pilots came up short, losing 5-4 to their arch rival the Mission City Outlaws, and were swept in four straight in the second round Pacific Junior Hockey League season.

Just like three of the other four games, the Pilots lost by one goal, and head coach Jim Cowden said the score was indicative of the Pilots seemingly coming up short all series long.

“We just never got any breaks,” he said. “We should have won game one, game three and tonight but we just didn’t get any breaks.”

Mission got started early, as the Outlaws got on the board just 26 seconds into the game. They made it 2-0 about two minutes later.

game again, but it was Mission’s Ryan Sharma who sealed the deal with the game-winning goal at 3:59. The Outlaws hung on the rest of the way for the 5-4 win.

Cowden said he didn’t want to use injuries as an excuse, but noted that several players were missing in game four: key defenceman Justin Peaker and Erik

Olson, along with forwards Dryden Michaud, Sean Olson, Jackson Waniek and Brady Morton. He also noted that starting goalie Jacob Crawford had still not fully recovered after being hurt in game two from a Mission forward hitting him.

Guilderson led the way in postseason scoring for the Pilots with 12 points in 10 games.

Defender Devon Becker also had a productive postseason with 10 points in 10 games.

Cole Methorst had a team-high five goals for Abbotsford.

The game marked the end of the junior career for Pilots captain Joel Balzer and forward Cole Methorst. Both players spent the last three seasons wearing Pilots colours.

Graham Philip April 18, 1950 – January 13, 2016 Philip passed away in Surrey on January 13, 2016 from a lengthy illness. He is survived by his brother George & wife Beverley, two nieces Lavender & Crystal and one nephew Jesse. He was predeceased by his mother Letitia and father Graham Hayhurst. A private Service was held. “Finally at Peace”

REGIER Helen In memory of a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Helen (Klassen) Regier was born July 18, 1919 in Olgafeld, Russia, and was the only child of Jacob and Anna Klassen. The family emigrated to Canada in the mid 1920’s as did many Mennonite families.

Helen’s family farmed in the Swift Current area. Helen was predeceased by her husband, Edward Regier, whom she married in 1943. Helen and her family moved to the Fraser Valley in 1945, and were Charter members of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church (now SevenOaks). Helen is survived by her children, Robert Regier (Miya Regier) her daughter, Susan Bedford (Mike Leavy), grandchildren, Laurie Anne, Crystal, and Shannon Bedford, and by her great-grandchildren, Jacob and Joshua. Helen is also survived by many extended family members and friends who share her heritage and her faith. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford. MILLER Yvonne Dolores July 21, 1930 ~ March 11, 2016 Yvonne Dolores (Cochrane) Miller was born in Strathclair, MB. She passed away peacefully with family present. She was an active member of the Clearbrook MB Church, the Menno Hospital Auxiliary, and her TOPS chapter. She was predeceased by her husband, Levi, and sisters, Wilma Tull and Aleta Frost. Survived by her sister Muriel Williams, children; Wilmar (Carol), Yvonne (Jack) Brown, Clayton (Cathy), and Delbert. She has 7 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Derek It is with profound sadness that the family of our beloved Derek announces his passing from this life on Sunday, March 6, 2016. Mourning his loss are wife Beverley, daughters Nicola McLaughlin (Barrie), Lindsey Albon, Jennifer Albon (Benoit), and son Simon Albon (Eden); Beverley’s children Wendryn Hamm and Andrew Wilson; and niece Ann Hall (Ian), son Oliver and family, as well as other relatives in Canada and the UK. His dearly loved grandchildren Kyle, Christopher, Danielle (Lee), Georgina (Erick), Taylor, Jordan, Annelle, Jacob, Brogan, Mackenzie and Kelsey will miss his wise advice and admonitions to live their lives to the fullest and seize each opportunity for growth, also to never sit when you can stand, stand when you can walk or walk when you can run. Heartfelt thanks to the many doctors, nurses, and medical staff at St. Paul’s Hospital, Vancouver, the Jean C. Barber Lodge at VGH, Abbotsford RHCC and Christine Morrison Hospice who cared for him throughout his five year journey with MDS and acute leukemia.

Errol was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, loved and respected by all who knew him.
