Elston said distracted driving tickets will cost the driver $167 and three points.

“If I, or any of the people who work within the RCMP, can write a cellphone ticket we’ll do it,” he said.

“It’s not something that we ever turn our noses at and say today’s not my cellphone day. We’re doing it 365 days a year.”

Yet people still aren’t getting the message. That was evident during an anti-distracted driving campaign in Port Alberni on Friday when RCMP stopped 33 people for infractions—14 of them for use of electronic devices.

Central Vancouver Island Traffic Services, Port Alberni RCMP and Nanaimo Integrated Road Safety Unit conducted a Distracted Driving campaign at the Johnston Road and Gertrude Street intersection on Friday.

Officers were undercover in plain clothing patrolling for distracted drivers using their cellphones while behind the wheel.

Several police vehicles were spread out in the area waiting for radio calls from the undercover officers with descriptions of the alleged distracted drivers in order to pull them over.

“I am a 50-year taxpayer,” he said. “At my age this is what I get in return?”

In addition, Kruks said the lights were on 24-7 so sleeping was very difficult.

He said the nearest washroom was shared with administration and nursing staff and was often occupied, resulting in patients using an alternative washroom further away.

“Now I’ve got to go all the way down to the end of the wing and that’s 100 yards away. And I’ve got a very large incision,” he said.

Kruks emphasized that he was not in any way upset with the nursing staff regarding his hospital stay, who he said did the absolute best they could under the circumstances, but instead his problem

lies with Island Health (VIHA) administration.

“We realize that there is a crisis happening at the West Coast General Hospital and having people step forward and actually say what’s happening is important so that we can know,” said Penny Cote, chair of the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional hospital district.

Cote said overcrowding at WCGH is a complicated issue and that she plans to be in contact with the hospital to find out more about what’s going on about the lack of beds.

“The health network is looking at problems with seniors, with poverty stricken people and with mental health issues,” Cote said. “They all end up at our hospital being added to the

overcrowding.”

Flu season also contributes to overcrowding, says WCGH’s new site director, Pam Rardon.

That was not the case in February, though, according to a VIHA official.

“In the past, the ambulatory care area has been used as a patient overflow area for inpatients on a temporary basis in over-capacity situations,” VIHA communications spokesperson Valerie Wilson wrote in an e-mail to the AV News.

“This has not been the case in recent weeks.”

The ambulatory care area is generally used for medical day care procedures that don’t require an overnight stay in hospital, Wilson said.

Kruks has sent letters regarding his hospital stay to VIHA administration, Scott Fraser, MLA for Alberni-Pacific Rim and will speak at a city council meeting.

Diana Sparks had been in the hospital in a private room for two days in Port Alberni in February when she was transported to Nanaimo for cardiac tests.

When she returned to West Coast General Hospital, she discovered she was moved—to a temporary curtained enclosure barely larger than her hospital bed, and located in what is usually the dining area of the medical surgical ward.

It was the same room that Frank Kruks said he was in following gall bladder surgery last month.

“I didn’t know they were going to move me,” Sparks said.

She was located

across from the nurses’ station, and the lights were never turned off, making it difficult to sleep.

The Beaver Creek woman spent six days in the hospital, she said, the last half in the curtained enclosure.

After a couple of days she said staff took her portable commode away, and she had to share a bathroom with other patients. When the facility was occupied on one occasion, she had an accident while waiting.

“It was embarrassing,” she said.

Sparks said this is not the first time she has been hospitalized at WCGH and moved around. About a year and a half ago she spent a night in the emergency ward

before getting a bed in the ambulatory care ward, which is supposed to be for day patients, according to an Island Health spokesperson.

Sparks said there were men and women mixed in the ward, including one man with emotional problems right beside her. “I was scared all the time,” she said.

Sparks said she has complained to staff about being moved around whenever she has been admitted to WCGH but only lodged one official complaint in the past—and never followed through with a meeting.

She hopes publicizing her experiences will help people in the future.

Sadly, Kruks’s experience is not new.

And he is not the only person to complain about being moved around, and being put in a temporary area separated only by curtains.

The bed shortage at WCGH is critical, not only for patients but for the staff members that must care for patients in an overcapacity situation.

After a battle with cancer Richard passed away March 6th, 2016 at Ty Watson house. He was predeceased by his parents Jack and Kathleen Berg. He is survived by four cousins and their families located in Dunnville, Ontario; Winnipeg, Manitoba; and Port Alberni. He will be laid to rest in Alberni Valley Memorial Gardens.

LUMINA ST. JACQUES June 22, 1918 March 7, 2016 Lumina Louise St. Jacques, 97, passed away peacefully on March 7th in her home with family by her side. Born on a farm in Wolsley, Saskatchewan in 1918, Lumina married Fernand Emile St. Jacques on February 10, 1942. They moved to the Alberni Valley nine years later and raised their six children: Romeo (Terri); Maurice (Diane); Lorraine (Al); Dennis (Dianne); Elizabeth (George); and Theresa. She has 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Lumina was a devoted wife and a greatly loved and respected mother. This is where she drew her strength and left her legacy. Being with her family was what she enjoyed most of all. She also enjoyed camping, jigsaw puzzles, card games, pull tabs, as well as sewing, knitting, and crocheting. She had a special passion for dancing (even in her transporter chair), music and singing. Lumina was known for her ease in frequent conversation with total strangers. Her signature gift of joy, shown through her constant smiling, laughter, and joking around, will never be forgotten. Her gentle and loving nature will be greatly missed by her family and many friends. The family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support in many heart-felt forms from too many people to name individually. Her youngest daughter, Theresa, lovingly cared for her mother the last six years of her life in so many immeasurable ways that brought a lasting bond between mother and daughter. Her siblings are eternally grateful for their sister’s untiring commitment and dedication to caring for their loving mother. Cremation has taken place. At Lumina’s request there will be no service. Private burial will be held at St. Peter’s RC Cemetery.

A Celebration of Life will be held in the Pacific Room at the “Chances Rimrock Casino�

Saturday, March 19, 2016 from 1:00 - 3:00 pm.

Bonesky hopes to tell tales through art Port Alberni artist Cynthia Bonesky was introduced to art as a young and curious kid, frequently drawing and painting and creating crafts with plasticine.

Bonesky has since flourished into an established artist whose vivid and colourful acrylic, oil and watercolour paintings will be on display at the Rollin Art Centre until April 1.

Painting mostly in her lake-view gallery at her Sproat Lake home, Bonesky, a retired teacher, said she had no institutional art training. Other than several painting and drawing workshops throughout her years, Bonesky is primarily a self-taught painter who believes practice is key to progress.

“I really like painting people,” Bonesky said.

Her compositions are largely inspired by photographs she’s taken herself, are provided by friends or cut from magazines.

Bonesky said she’s most inclined to paint in the winter months or on a rainy spring day because she enjoys being out in her garden when the sun is shining.

On average, one

of her paintings will take about a week to complete, painting four to five hours a day.

– Cynthia Bonesky To get ready for her current exhibit she “painted like mad” to complete seven compositions in a month and a half.

“I’ve always wanted to make stuff, and it isn’t always painting,” Bonesky said.

“I think that’s what appeals to me about gardening.”

The display at the Rollin Art Centre showcases some of Bonesky’s favourite paintings and drawings that depict distinguished characters from her travels, her daughters, a Pearl Harbor soldier and many more faces she’s met throughout her life.

“I need to sell them so I can empty my house out. My gallery is getting pretty full,” she said.

Bonesky began painting more seriously in 1994 but

it wasn’t until about ten years later that she actually felt like a “real painter” and wanted to frame her artwork.

“The most important thing is to be patient with yourself and to make lots and lots of mistakes because theres a lot of people who start painting and they want it to look perfect right away and that’s not going to happen,” she said.

“I have got stacks and stacks of really awful paintings and every time you switch to a new medium you go through that again.”

Aside from painting and drawing in her own gallery, Bonesky shares her skills with avid painters at the Wednesday Painters, an association that began as a group of friends and graduated into a larger group of painters who bring instructors in for workshops at the Alberni Athletic Hall.

Bonesky also teaches an adult drawing workshop held at Echo Centre.

Inspired by Norman Rockwell’s ability to tell a story through art, Bonesky hopes people will perceive the emotion behind her illustrations and be able to imagine the story they tell— like she does with
