Second tanker overturns on Dempster Highway Maura Forrest News Reporter

A

nother fuel truck has overturned on the Dempster Highway north of Eagle Plains, in the so-called “Hurricane Alley.”

The accident happened on Thursday at kilometre 458 of the highway. An Environment Yukon spokesperson said the diesel was pumped out of the tanker by noon on Monday. He said no fuel was spilled.

This is the second fuel tanker to roll over on the highway in the last two weeks. Another truck, carrying 13,000 litres of diesel, overturned just north of Eagle Plains on Feb. 26. About 200 litres of diesel spilled onto the road, but did not reach any waterways. The rest of the fuel was pumped out.

Clint Ireland, director for the transportation maintenance branch of the Department of Highways and Public Works, said there was drifting snow and poor visibility when the second tanker drove off the road. The driver was uninjured.

Ireland said there were a couple of similar accidents last year on that stretch of the road.

“It’s kind of typical, I think,” he said. “Nothing out of the ordinary.”

He said the foreman at Eagle Plains does close the road during especially bad weather. But he said the maintenance crew tries to minimize road closures, because commercial traffic doesn’t like to be stopped.

“It’s always a constant judgment call,” he said. “I think that we provide a really high level of service for the Dempster Highway.”

Lindsay claims the portion of the Dempster Highway in the Northwest Territories is much better maintained than the Yukon section, though he did say the stretch south of Eagle Plains has been clearer this year than in the past.

He said he reached out to Highways and Public Works Minister Scott Kent last year about conditions on the highway, but little came of it.

“It just doesn’t seem like they’ve got enough ducks in the pond,” Lindsay said. “And they don’t seem to care about it so much because it costs them

money.”

Ireland said he’s heard similar criticisms before, but said there’s only so much the government can do.

“When there’s a blizzard and zero visibility, there isn’t anything you can do to make it different.”

Ireland said three of the Yukon’s 21 permanent road maintenance camps are stationed along the Dempster Highway. He said those camps receive 19 per cent of the total camp budget for the territory, even though the Dempster represents just 9.6 per cent of the Yukon’s highway network.

The Dempster Highway camps received $5.19 million in this year’s budget, he said.

He said the maintenance crews also try to replace the snow poles as they get knocked down, but “when the ground is frozen, it’s not an easy thing to do.”

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but officers believe slippery road conditions may have been a contributing factor, according to an RCMP news release.

he Yukon is falling behind the rest of Canada when it comes to managing its waste responsibly.

That was one of the messages that emerged from last weekend’s zero waste conference, an event that brought over 100 industry experts to Whitehorse in an effort to find ways to reduce waste.

Bryna Cable, environmental coordinator with the City of Whitehorse, said the key is to adopt the same model that’s being used across the country: extended producer responsibility, or EPR. “The City has been calling for EPR for years,” she said.

“It’s not only the number-one priority for the Yukon government to move on. It’s really the only way we’ll move to an effective waste management system.”

In southern Canada and in many countries around the world, EPR laws require manufacturers to fund and manage recycling and disposal programs for their products.

Take the case of electronic products. When you buy a television in many Canadian jurisdictions, you’re

paying an additional eco-fee – $39.50 in Ontario – regardless of the brand, where you bought it or who you bought it from. That fee covers the cost of disposal, or recycling, of the product.

But there is no EPR policy in the Yukon, and it’s putting the burden on municipalities to find ways to fund the disposal of those products, Cable said.

“Think of waste like an overflowing bathtub,” she said.

“We’ve had a 50 per cent increase in waste generation since 2000.

When that tub overflows, we’re putting more and more expensive towels on the ground.

“The municipalities don’t have the ability to reach up and turn the tap off.”

Instead of EPR, the Yukon government has two stewardship programs. It requires consumers to pay an additional fee up-front on most beverage containers and some tires.

The tires fall under the Designated Materials Regulation. The title was picked so that other items such as electronic waste could be added in the future, Cable said.

But no other items have been added since 2003.

“The rest of Canada is moving towards EPR,” Cable said, “and the real leader is British Columbia.”

The province has 15 stewardship programs for products such as expired smoke alarms, motor oil, batteries, cell phones, hazardous waste, toys and pharmaceuticals.

There’s also a program for packaging and printed paper, which Cable refers to as “the holy grail of EPR.”

Under the B.C. Recycling Regulation, businesses that supply packaging and printed paper are now responsible for the cost of collecting, sorting and recycling these materials.

Multi-Material BC, a non-profit organization, uses fees paid by its members to finance residential curbside recycling programs for printed paper and packaging in many areas across B.C., according to its website.

At last weekend’s conference, Cable said she spoke to a represen-

tative from the Recycling Council of British Columbia, who told her the Yukon could easily connect into British Columbia’s already successful system.

Members of city council are drafting four resolutions to be presented at the Association of Yukon Communities’ upcoming annual general meeting in May. One of them encourages the Yukon government to develop and implement an electronics recycling program.

The Government of the Northwest Territories has just implemented a similar program.

The regulations, which came into force on Feb. 1, identify a list of electronic products that, when distributed new in the Northwest Territories, are subject to an environmental handling fee.

NDP’s Moorcroft launches re-election campaign NDP MLA Lois Moorcroft has announced she’s planning to seek re-election in Copperbelt South during this year’s territorial election.

During her announcement on Monday, Moorcroft focused on the work she’s done to support social justice and human rights.

She referred to two motions she’s tabled, one to build accessible campsites in Yukon campgrounds, and another calling for trans rights to be explicitly included in the Yukon Human Rights Act. She has also called for the Yukon government to end the use of solitary confinement at the Whitehorse Correctional Centre.

Moorcroft also spoke about her work as the critic for Highways and Public Works, and

referred specifically to the functional plan for the Whitehorse corridor of the Alaska Highway, which has received a lukewarm reaction from the public.

“I’ve heard loud and clear from Copperbelt South constituents and Alaska Highway business owners that we need safe transportation,” she said.

“But this current plan doesn’t make the grade. It’s important to get it right.”

An NDP government, Moorcroft said, would also focus on climate change. “We need to be looking at a renewable energy future. We need to be doing a transition to a green economy.”

She said an NDP government would adopt the Peel watershed regional land use plan.

But she said she’s now had four and a half years to represent her constituents in the legislature.

“I’ve been at a lot of community events and I’ve done a lot of things to expose issues for the residents of Copperbelt South,” she said. “So yes, I hope to do well.”

City seeks answers from Yukon government

Another resolution calls for the Yukon government to provide more clarity when it comes to implementing a hotel tax.

In December, the territory’s Municipal Act underwent several changes, including amendments to the section on the powers of municipal governments to levy taxes and other fees.

But it remains unclear whether Yukon municipalities have the authority to charge a hotel tax under the amended act, according to the city’s administrative report.

“We’re not on a quest to introduce a hotel tax,” said councillor Dan Boyd at Monday evening’s meeting.

“We’re just seeking more clarity.”

Members of city council will vote on whether or not to present the resolutions at next week’s meeting.

The City of Whitehorse plans on using the Association of Yukon Communities’ upcoming annual general meeting to ask the territorial government some important questions.

Members of city council are drafting four resolutions that will be presented to AYC membership from May 12-15 in Watson Lake.

One of the resolutions encourages the Yukon government to develop and implement an electronics recycling program.

Yukon consumers currently pay a surcharge on certain products, including beverage containers and tires, at the time of purchase.

Those extra fees help cover the costs of recycling those products.

But there is no program in place to cover the costs of transporting and processing electronic waste out of the territory.

Governor general gives nod to Yukon’s champion of Haitian children Ashley Joannou News Reporter

ukon’s own Morgan Wienberg has been recognized

by Canada’s governor general for her exceptional work with children in Haiti.

Twenty-four-year-old Wienberg was among a group of Canadians honoured with the Meritorious Service Cross at a ceremony in Vancouver.

Only 45 people have ever received this award. Wienberg is the first Yukoner. She officially earned the award late last year but received her accolades at the ceremony last week.

“Each of these great Canadians is making this a better country, one day at a time, one remarkable act at a time,” Governor General David Johnston said Friday.

“Today, we’re here to say thank you for your compassion, for your excellence, for your sacrifices.”

The award recognizes work that “sets an example for others to follow, improves the quality of life of a community and brings considerable benefit or honour to Canada,” according to the governor general’s office.

Wienberg’s work certainly meets those criteria.

In 2011, she co-founded Little Footprints, Big Steps, a safe transitional house in Haiti for children who would likely otherwise be living in poverty and neglect.

The organization helps children get an education and families become self-sufficient. It reunites abandoned children with their relatives whenever possible.

Wienberg lives full-time in Haiti. During a trip home last year, she visited local schools to talk to students about her experience.

It’s the central part of the substation, where power is stored, that is responsible for distributing it to the different communities through distribution lines, she explained.

Cunha compared the bus to a large water tank, with different pipes coming out of it.

A crack in a water line will only affect that particular pipe, she explained, but a crack in the main tank will affect all of them, like it did on Saturday.

In this case, the outage affected residents and business owners in Marwell, Porter Creek, Takhini, Valleyview, McIntyre, Logan, Arkell, half of Copper Ridge and some sections of downtown Whitehorse.

Power was restored to customers in multiple stages between 3:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Cunha said it’s not common for ravens or other wildlife to fly directly into the bus. About 30 per cent of all outages in Whitehorse are caused by wildlife, she added.

of Canada ruled that the government could not introduce such changes unilaterally. Instead, the

reforms would require the consent of seven provinces representing half the country’s population.

Subsequently, Harper shelved his plans for Senate reform. As it stands today, senators can serve until mandatory retirement at age 75. Lang is 67.

Of course, there’s nothing preventing senators from adopting self-imposed term limits. But Lang is not obliged to step down at the end of eight years.

Raghubeer said Lang’s past statements simply show that he would have adhered to any legislative changes.

“There are comments that said he’d respect the term limits imposed. But there were no term limits imposed,” he said. “His position back then was fluid as it pertained to the legislation being brought in.”

ukon Senator Dan Lang is calling on the federal government to fully restore transfer payments to the three territories, and says it’s unfair that the provinces haven’t seen similar cuts.

He said that if the $6.5-million shortfall the Yukon faces isn’t remedied, the government will have to look at spending cutbacks or increased taxes.

“I don’t think it was done properly, and I don’t think it’s fair,” he said.

Lang calculates that the three territories will see a total shortfall of more than $100 million

over the next five years, based on annual shortfalls of $6.5 million to the Yukon, $10 million to the Northwest Territories and $8 million to Nunavut.

He said he thinks that’s particularly unfair, given that Canada has been “transferring significant amounts of money, like billions of dollars, internationally.”

He said the Trudeau government spent $5 billion outside the country in its first three months in office, on humanitarian aid, climate change and immigration.

“Why would we cut back the North when we have our own problems here?” he said.

The Yukon was expecting to receive $953 million in total transfer payments in 2016-17, up from $923 million this fiscal year.

In December, it was revealed that methodological changes at Statistics Canada would result in a $23-million shortfall, meaning the Yukon would only have received $930 million.

Last month, the federal government announced it will make legislative amendments to restore $16.5 million of that shortfall. The Yukon will now receive about $947 million, an increase of $24 million over this year’s transfer. Still, Lang said the provinces’ transfer payments have been fully restored, which suggests the territories haven’t received fair treatment.

“You haven’t heard anybody

cutting back the government of Quebec, their transfer, and it’s billions,” he said. “You haven’t heard anybody cutting back Ontario – that’s billions.”

Tim Shoniker, director of fiscal relations for the Yukon Department of Finance, said it’s true the provinces haven’t been affected the same way the territories have.

He said equalization payments to the provinces would have been affected by the Statistics Canada methodology changes. But the government decided to use the old methodologies to calculate equalization payments, so they were fully restored for the 2016-17 year.

But the territorial transfer payments are a bit more complicated. He said those calculations use an extra variable that isn’t used for equalization payments to the provinces. That’s the variable responsible for the shortfall the territories are now facing.

Still, Shoniker said Finance Canada could have chosen to fully restore the territorial transfer payments, and didn’t.

“They never told us why they partially did it,” he said.

A request for an explanation from Finance Canada went unanswered by deadline.

hanks to the Yukon Party, Yukon has become a case study in how not to run an economy.

The Conference Board of Canada recently confirmed that Yukon’s economy has shrunk for three consecutive years.

In the face of the global downturn in commodity prices which will see the Minto mine – the last active resource extraction project in the territory – wind down over the next year, Yukon’s government continues to choose to invest in massive projects over smaller, scalable projects. In doing so, the Yukon Party overwhelmingly awards contracts to large national or multinational firms instead of northern or local ones.

In conversations with many Yukoners over the past months, people often ask me why the Yukon Party refuses to focus on the basics of economic development by hiring Yukon firms for Yukon projects.

Yukon companies are doing their part by being good neighbours; just look at Air North’s recent recognition as the second most-loved airline in the world. As one of the largest non-government employers in the region, Air North is a great example of an effective private sector-First Nation partnership that has led to substantial positive economic benefits across Yukon’s economy.

The Yukon Party is quick to stand behind Yukon businesses when things go well, but on economics there is a glaring discrepancy between what the Yukon Party says and what it does. Rather than focus on encouraging the development and diversification of Yukon’s economy, the Yukon Party has repeatedly spurned opportunities to do so by repeatedly choosing massive projects over small, scalable ones and large national or multinational firms over northern and/or local ones.

Let’s take a look at some examples of the Yukon Party’s outsourcing in action.

The Yukon Party government recently awarded a five-year care and remediation contract for the abandoned Faro mine to Parsons Corporation, a California-based company that describes itself as “successful in winning environmental and mining projects in Northern Canada� and that is committed to “aggressively pursuing additional northern projects�.

Ironically, the Faro mine remediation is the Yukon Party’s only sustained mining-related work since the 2003 Devolution Transfer Agreement. For 13 years, Canadians have been on the hook, through the Yukon government, for ensuring that the mine’s toxic tailings are contained – forever. We still have no clear idea of how the government will contain the tailings, how much it will cost (or has cost so far), nor do we know how many local jobs have been generated through this ongoing project.

James Price Parsons is no doubt eminently qualified to work in diverse fields; one would expect no less from a corporation with in excess of $3 billion in annual revenue. For a company of this size, paring off a few million to undercut other bidders is a simple example of a loss leader.

They have their eye on the prize: the many millions of dollars’ worth of northern mine cleanups‌ and they have the money to trump smaller, local bids.

The decision to award the Faro contract to this large multinational company is not isolated.

Let’s not forget the Yukon Party’s decision to quietly hand the Employee Assistance Program over to Morneau Shepell, the Toronto-based human resource and outsourcing juggernaut.

A Yukon government evaluation showed satisfaction with the services provided by a small local organization with highly qualified and professional staff – so why did the Yukon Party insist on offering another slice of Yukon’s government services to an Outside company?

The Yukon Party recently poured salt on Yukon’s unemployment woes by cutting funding to the YuWin job board – considered by many to be the best resource in Yukon for both local employers and Yukoners looking for work alike – and instead diverted that money to a Canada-wide job site. In public statements Yukon business owners spoke out against defunding the YuWin job board; in a letter to the editor, one said that “without YuWin we will be left without an effective online tool for the purpose of filling vacancies with local jobseekers.�

The Yukon First Nations Chamber of Commerce and the Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce have both recently indicated that the

Yukon Party’s actions ignore our local potential. Yukon is proud to be the home of many capable and locally managed companies that could, either independently or in collaboration with others, complete this work while enhancing northern capacity and innovation. And the best part about it? They live in, and contribute to, our local Yukon economy.

As the Yukon NDP’s finance critic, I regularly ask the Premier about the business case analyses that support his government’s decisions. I have provided him with examples of the many studies that show how supporting local businesses has a significant economic multiplier effect across the community.

I encourage Yukoners to look more closely at the Yukon Party’s record, and ask the question behind the question. Check the list of contracts tendered by the Yukon Party government since 2002 for projects like hospitals, schools, fibre optic proposals, transmission line extensions, mine remediation and continuing care facilities. Ask for the total final cost for projects versus their projected cost. Ask for the evidence of a business case analysis prior to the awarding of contracts. Ask which firms the Premier and /or his ministers met with prior to awarding those contracts.

The Yukon NDP caucus and I have asked these questions. The record shows that they remain unanswered.

These questions are important. And with a territorial election looming, there could soon be a government that believes Yukon citizens have a right to know.

Our premier dumbs down the discussion on carbon pricing

don’t think anyone can really dispute that life in the North poses unique challenges in terms of reducing our carbon footprint. It is colder and darker here. We run our furnaces and leave our lights on more. Our food and everything else we consume has to be shipped a great distance, and if we ever want to travel outside the territory the jet we ride on will contribute some more carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. Long winter nights make using solar energy to supplement the grid less realistic.

And perhaps most importantly, if we ever want to wean ourselves from the federal teat we’re going to need some economic growth.

But living in the North shouldn’t be an excuse for doing nothing either. Premier Darrell Pasloski has made hay in recent weeks by voicing his opposition to any sort of national carbon pricing regime, using the excuse that life in the North is hard.

I find the premier’s opposi-

tion disappointing for several reasons but primarily because he contributed to widespread misconceptions about carbon pricing, which remains a poorly understood tool in the CO2 reduction toolbox. And like critics of carbon pricing who went before him, Pasloski simply assumes it will be a drag on the economy and ignores the many options policy makers have to ensure that carbon pricing doesn’t become “just another tax grab.”

Carbon pricing starts from the assumption that we are going to continue to emit carbon dioxide, but starts to steer society towards lower emissions by making the emitter – that would be all of us – actually pay a price for our emissions.

Prices influence behaviour.

That is Economics 101. When something is cheap we use lots of it. When it is expensive we seek out alternatives to reduce our usage.

Remember when gas prices were north of a $1.30 a few years back? People were actually thinking about how much oil they used. Expensive fuel made alternatives more competitive. It made it more worthwhile to retrofit your home to make it more efficient or install solar panels. Suddenly big gas-guzzling vehicles didn’t seem like such a good idea.

We humans are incredibly

price conscious. High prices create a disincentive towards high carbon practices. Carbon pricing increases the price. That part of it really isn’t that complicated.

There is an assumption in the premier’s opposition that carbon pricing inevitably means that there will be a net increase in the tax burden of Canadians which will be drag on the economy.

But here is the truth of the matter: it doesn’t need to be that way. In fact, government can return every dollar it collects through carbon pricing to its citizens if it is ideologically inclined to do so.

There is no question that carbon pricing has the potential become a tax hike. But it doesn’t need to be. Details matter and there are few limits on the policy possibilities.

Government can offset the new revenue it receives through carbon pricing by reducing income taxes or the GST. If we are concerned that carbon pricing will disproportionately affect the poor – as B.C. was when it implemented its tax several years ago – there are ways to deal with that, like enhancing the low income GST refundable tax credit or establishing new rebates.

If there are concerns that carbon pricing will hit the North particularly hard, there are ways to mitigate this as well. The federal government could enhance

the northern residents deduction, or transfer money to territorial governments to reduce territorial income tax.

If you are a conservative and your goal is truly to ensure that the government does not take greater portion of the economic pie, you should focus on ensuring that is the case, not reject carbon pricing outright. Pasloski and others should focus on holding Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to account if what he ultimately introduces is not revenue neutral.

Or better yet, the naysayers should take the federal government up on its offer to act within their own provincial and territorial jurisdiction so they truly have the power to ensure that is the case. Oh yeah, we missed that part. All indications are that the federal government is willing to let each province and territory do its own thing so long as there is some minimum price paid for emissions.

It is strange in a way that conservative politicians have become so vocally opposed to carbon pricing, as it is actually a relatively “conservative” approach to the issue of climate change. It recognizes the inevitability of some level of CO2 emission. It allows consumers to have a choice in how they reduce their emissions. It even creates an opportunity for each of us to reduce our own taxes

by modifying our lifestyles to be less reliant on fossil fuels. One would think that taxing carbon emissions would be preferable to taxing income – where we can only reduce our tax burden by earning less.

I’m no utopian. Some amount of emissions are necessary with current technology and infrastructure anywhere you live, and it is defensible to say that level is even higher here. But just like residents in the south, much of our emissions are optional.

They are the consequence of lifestyle choices we make like large, energy inefficient homes; gas-guzzling vehicles that we drive to work by ourselves; and a disinterest in making investments in technologies that could reduce our consumption of fossil fuels.

If we accept the scientific consensus of human caused climate change, putting a price on carbon emissions would seem to be a moderate, reasonable approach to the issue. It leaves you and I as consumers and economic actors in the driver’s seat in terms of how we tackle the issue.

Otherwise – and particularly in a new world of cheap oil – we have very little disincentive to reduce our carbon footprint.

above, why does our newest piece of public infrastructure, the new FH Collins High School, not incorporate more energy efficiency technology and alternate space heating technology?

The building is not, from what I have read, built to a super-green standard, nor is it LEED certified to any level. Neither does it have a biomass boiler. It could be it has a secondary electric boiler to make use of Yukon Energy’s power surpluses, but I am not even sure of that.

I have enquired about the new extended care facility to be located in Whistle Bend. From the responses received I can surmise that it is “energy efficient” but there is no indication of being built to a super-green standard and no indication of a LEED certification at any level. There is no mention of a biomass boiler; condensing propane boilers will be used instead (which have been around for about 20 years).

By absence of mention in response to my inquiry, there will be no secondary energy boiler to make use of any surplus electrical energy Yukon Energy may have. And Yukon Energy will have more surplus when the Minto mine shuts down. Finally, despite the many suitable roof surfaces on this three-storey building

there will not be a single solar panel on it.

While we have a number glossy of strategies, action plans, and policies, it seems to me much more in the way of greenhouse gas emission reductions could have been achieved with our tax dollars if instead they had been invested in some real concrete action items (just as a carbon tax would allow us to do).

The Whistle Bend extended care facility is only in the design stage now, so there is still time to make some real improvements to reduce its greenhouse gas impact on our climate. Let’s pull up our socks and do something real!

level, no matter what we do here in the North or even in Canada, the lack of unity that Mr. Carruthers reflects on can only be overcome with a massive transfer of wealth from the First World (North America and Europe) to developing countries.

There are currently 300 million people (i.e. about 10 times the population of Canada and 10,000 times our Yukon population) in India who do not have access to reliable electricity. Their carbon output is growing faster than any other country. As the Sierra Club has asked, how do you pull that many people out of poverty using a lot more renewable energy that has ever been used before?

The prime minister of India has promised that all Indians will have electricity by 2022 (an extension from the initial promise of 2019). Even if this date is just a politician’s promise, the fact remains that one-quarter of India’s 1.2 billion people do not have the same basic reliable electricity that we have. Our alarms go off at 6 a.m. and we turn on the light.

This happens nearly 100 per cent of the time. To get that same reliable electricity, India plans to build 455 coal-fired electric power plants, which is more than the U.S. has now, using its vast coal reserves (mostly low-grade,

highly polluting coal). This, of course, would destroy any hope of reaching worldwide emissions targets.

The only alternative would be solar and wind energy. However, right now solar power is more expensive than coal-fired power.

Should the poor of India pay more for cleaner energy or, as the Indians have argued, should the West pay billions to India to help them move into the modern era without first going more through the fossil fuels industrialization process? (India did release an emissions plan recently, with a cost of $2.5 trillion to 2030 to be paid for by the West.)

Lessening our dependence here in the Yukon and in Canada on fossil fuels is a good thing, but I am not going to care (and cast my votes in elections based on) whether we meet provincial or territorial or national climate change targets. Given that Canadians (or Americans or Europeans) are not likely to agree to higher taxes to send monies and technology to India (and other developing countries) and given that India will continue to move forwards, the “inconvenient truth” is that we really don’t matter much.

LETTERS More carbon action, please Last week both local newspapers carried articles quoting our premier’s opposition to carbon taxes. Apparently, although we are paying 40 to 50 cents per litre less for gasoline, diesel fuel and home heating fuel we would still not be able to afford a tax of 5 to 10 cents per litre, as some provinces have instituted.

According to these articles our government feels that there are other ways to reduce emissions, including retrofits to public infrastructure to improve energy efficiency. It makes sense, we are told, to focus on advancing new technologies.

The government indicates it fully supports addressing climate change as outlined in the Climate Change Action Plan (developed in 2008 and released in early 2009). Very recently, and with much fanfare, the Biomass Energy Strategy was released.

“Using biomass is a cost-effective and environmentally sustainable solution for heating in the territory” the minister is quoted as saying.

What is puzzling in all this is that we all know that retrofits are far more expensive than building better in the first place. So given all of the quotes and indications from our government as outlined

Yukon wins 30 medals at Arctic Games on Tuesday to Alaska. Females Lara HerrySaint Onge and Tyra Jones, and males Felix Maltais and Dawson Weir, all notched three goals over their teams’ first three matches.

Yukon’s intermediate female team lost 6-3 to Greenland and beat Alaska 2-0. Mikaela Ponsioen had two goals.

The juvenile teams are both 1-2, each with a win over N.W.T. Yukon’s wrestling team placed fourth out of five in the team event ahead of Team N.W.T. on Tuesday.

Yukoners Marek Boulerice, Abby Cuenza and Carl Knickle lost quarterfinal matches in badminton on Monday. But Boulerice and Lukas Kobler have reached Wednesday’s semifinal in junior male doubles. Knickle and Michael Betts have done the same in juvenile male doubles. Results were not available at press time.

ollowing a fairly quiet Monday, Team Yukon roared to 30 medals on Tuesday at the 2016 Arctic Winter Games in Nuuk, Greenland.

The Yukon team went into Wednesday with a total of 31 medals – or “ulus” – and was second in the standings behind Alaska and ahead of Greenland.

Haines Junction’s Sarina Primozic won Yukon’s first medal on Monday in the Dene games snow snake event for junior female.

The 18-year-old claimed silver with a throw of 63.35 metres.

“It feels very exhilarating and I’m super-honoured to be the first Yukon medalist this year!” said Primozic in a message to the News. “63.3 is not my best but a silver ulu in an individual event is! I’m having an amazing time and I will remember this trip for the rest of my life.”

Yukon’s Dene games team went on to collect three more medals Tuesday in the stick pull.

Maureen McGinty and Tyler O’Brien won silvers and Jedrek Dendys pulled to gold in junior male.

“He pulled hard all day going undefeated and winning the last two pulls for the medal with ease,” said coach Doronn Fox. “We cheered each other on all day. That was a big help to our athletes, the ongoing support of each other.”

Team Yukon’s first gold of the Games was picked up by Whitehorse’s Liam Adel in biathlon Tuesday. The 17-year-old won the junior male’s 7.5-kilometre race with over a minute to spare.

“I am quite happy to be bringing home a gold for the one place in the world I call home,” said Adel. “I am happy that the whole team and myself are representing the Yukon and its amazing people the best way possible.”

Biathlon Yukon looks to be on the verge of a breakout Games in Greenland. Adel’s gold was one of seven won by Yukon in ski biathlon on Tuesday.

That’s more than Yukon won in total in ski biathlon at each of the previous three Arctics.

(Yukon snowshoe biathletes also nabbed three bronze ulus Tuesday.)

Whitehorse’s Robyn Poulter was Yukon’s only arctic sports athlete to win a gold at the 2014 Games and she’s already won another one this week. The 16-year-old repeated in the junior female kneel jump with a leap of 105 centimetres. Teammate Matt Jacobson won a gold in the one-hand reach at 167.6 centimetres on Tuesday.

After getting shutout of gold medals at the 2014 Games, Yukon cross-country skiers won three on Tuesday in five-kilometre interval start races. Yukon Ski Team members Hannah Deuling, Derek Deuling and Simon Cash each won gold while teammates Natalie Hynes and Hannah Jirousek skied to silver.

The slopes in Nuuk have been good to Team Yukon with both the alpine ski and snowboard teams winning three medals Tuesday. Katie Vowk and

Charlie Hawes sped to gold in and Shane Orban silver in the slalom ski races. Boarder Tim Schirmer claimed silver in slalom and bronze in the rail jam and teammate Sammy Mather bronze in the rail jam.

Yukon’s snowshoe team stomped to three medals in their first day of races, with Breda McIntyre and Jack Amos taking gold and Joe Parker bronze.

Half of Yukon’s eight-person table tennis team reached the semifinals for their respective divisions on Tuesday. Whitehorse’s Grace-Anne Janssen and Arcel Siosan, and Dawson City’s Emily Gaw and Sam Crocker, will all play their semifinal matches on Thursday.

“I’m pleased not only with the four players through but also the fact it’s an even Dawson/Whitehorse split,” said coach Kevin Murphy. “Sam Crocker upset his higher ranked opponent from Nunavut to get through. Arcel and Grace-Anne played well to qualify. Emily went undefeated in her group and won her quarterfinal match – so that was a surprise.”

Yukon’s male volleyball team went into Wednesday undefeated, topping N.W.T., Green-

land and Alaska with only one set dropped along the way. The female team lost their first three games.

There has been just one win for Yukon so far in hockey, which is being played at the satellite venue of Iqaluit, Nunavut.

Yukon’s female team defeated Nunavut 13-3 on Monday and was shutout by N.W.T. 3-0 on Tuesday. Yukon forward Chyanne Spenner was leading the tournament in points with one goal and five assists after Tuesday. The male team lost to N.W.T.14-1 Monday with a goal from Jesse Goodman, and lost 11-0 to Alberta North on Tuesday.

Yukon’s male basketball team squeaked out a 70-67 over Alaska on Monday and then downed Nunavut 85-67 Tuesday.

RJ Siosan led the team with 36 points in the two games.

Yukon’s female basketball team lost 104-33 to Alaska Monday before beating Nunavut 64-59 Tuesday. Kennedy CairnsLocke led Yukon with 30 points.

By the end of Tuesday, Yukon’s futsal soccer squads have a win-loss record of 7-7, all five teams combined. Both junior teams are 2-1 with wins over Nunavut and N.W.T. and losses

“Nobody I know is going to the state dinner,” said the head of the local Canada Institute at the Wilson Center, Laura Dawson, when asked about the guest list.

“I think the idea is to keep the bureaucrats and the wonks to a minimum and really focus on high-level people who exemplify important attributes of the relationship – whether they’re from culture, entertainment…

“I know people who are incredibly well-connected to the White House and they are just getting rebuffed… Trudeau’s got a lot of star power in Washington – people want to get up close and see if this guy’s for real.”

Trudeau’s political opponents at home – note that some of these things sound suspiciously similar to files already in the works under the previous government.

They’ve also questioned how much might get done given that the president has 10 months left, and no hope of getting the Republican Congress to approve a Supreme Court justice let alone a substantive climate plan.

Trudeau should start making connections that’ll be useful when Obama’s gone, and rub elbows with other influential actors.

Raymond Chretien has another suggestion for the prime minister.

It involves Trump. And it’s based on personal experience.

Chretien says some media exaggerated simple observations he made about the two presidential candidates in 2000 – some apparently even interpreted his nonverbal communication as favouring Al Gore over George W. Bush.

His advice now: “Don’t get involved in American politics. Don’t take sides in your words, don’t take sides in your moves, don’t takes sides with your smile. Don’t take sides – period…

BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT Sugar Mobile aims to sweeten the deal for cellular customers Ice Wireless says its new offering is innovative. Canada’s big telecom companies say it’s an abuse of roaming agreements.

A

regional wireless carrier with a 3G network across the territories is trying to go national – and it’s getting pushback from some of Canada’s big three telecommunications companies.

In January, Ice Wireless launched Sugar Mobile, a startup offering a $19-a-month wireless service to customers across Canada.

The service uses a combination of Wi-Fi and data networks to allow customers to make phone calls and send text messages over the Internet, kind of like using Skype.

“It’s not a traditional cellular service,” said Samer Bishay, president and CEO of Sugar Mobile and Ice Wireless. “It’s all data. You’re able to make all your voice phone calls, all your SMS messages and obviously surf the Internet through that connection.”

To use Sugar Mobile, customers first have to unlock their phones and download an app.

Then, when they’re in a WiFi hotspot – which Bishay said is 80 per cent of the time for most people – they can make unlimited calls and send unlimited texts to anyone in Canada and the U.S. They’re also given 200 megabytes of data for any time they don’t have WiFi. Bishay said that’s enough for 650 minutes of voice chat or about 20,000 text messages.

Bishay said $19 a month is far less than Canadians can expect to pay for a traditional phone plan with data from any of the major carriers – Bell, Telus or Rogers.

“The price point to actually get on a data plan in Canada right now is at least at $40 to start,” he said, “which is a high price to pay considering that you’re going to only want the data when you’re outside of that (Wi-Fi) zone, right? And you’re only outside of that zone for 20 per cent of the time.”

But it’s Sugar Mobile’s creative way of finding customers across Canada that has now attracted the ire of Rogers and Bell.

Ice Wireless operates in the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. But it has a reciprocal roaming agreement with Rogers, so that customers in the North can still use their phones when they’re in southern Canada.

So a customer living in Toronto will piggyback off the roaming agreement, and will simply appear to Rogers as an Ice Wireless customer roaming in southern Canada.

Bishay said he doesn’t think the design is sneaky.

“We’re just trying to innovate and push the envelope, and benefit the consumer at the end of the day. ... That’s really what it comes down to,” he said.

He said Sugar Mobile already has thousands of customers across Canada, including some in the Yukon.

But Rogers, unsurprisingly, is not pleased with the arrangement. In February, the company sent a notice to Ice Wireless, saying it would disconnect Ice Wireless and Sugar Mobile from its mobile network.

In return, Ice Wireless filed a complaint with the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission. Now, the CRTC has until March 17 to decide whether Sugar Mobile should be allowed to keep operating.

Josh Tabish, campaigns director at Vancouver-based non-profit advocacy group

OpenMedia, said the real question here is whether a regional provider should be allowed to go national.

“Companies that have been forced to build out their own cellphone infrastructure fail,” he said, referring to WIND Mobile and Mobilicity, upstart providers that were eventually bought out

by Shaw and Rogers. “The bar for building a national cellphone network when three already exist is simply too high.”

He said the only way for regional companies to compete with the Big Three is by doing something new, like Sugar Mo-

bile has done.

“We need innovation in whatever form it looks like,” he said.

“This type of thing should be encouraged, not discouraged.”

Sugar Mobile is partly the product of a CRTC ruling from 2015. In the ruling, the CRTC said that companies without their own wireless infrastructure can negotiate access with a single carrier and then take advantage of all the roaming agreements that carrier has with other operators.

Bishay said Sugar Mobile qualifies as one of those companies. It has an agreement with Ice Wireless, and is therefore entitled to use the Rogers network, he argued.

He also said that Sugar Mobile customers are only roaming a small fraction of the time, since they’re mostly using WiFi connections.

“Why doesn’t Rogers do the same thing instead of fighting us?” he said. “Why don’t they launch their own ... product and compete?”

But Rogers says Sugar Mobile is violating its roaming agreement with Ice Wireless.

“These customers are clearly not roaming and have no right to use Rogers,” the company said in a submission to the CRTC on Feb. 18.

Bell has also waded into the fray, saying that Sugar Mobile is allowing its customers to spend “all of their air time permanently roaming on the network of the roaming provider rather than on the home network of their service provider.”

But Tabish said he thinks Rogers is just trying to kill any competition.

“We think that if the commission has any sense, they will see this for what it is, which is a blatantly anti-competitive move,” he said.

He said companies like Sugar Mobile already exist in the United States, but the Big Three have made it very difficult for similar companies to thrive in Canada.

On Saturday, OpenMedia launched a petition to support Sugar Mobile, which has already collected over 25,000 signatures.

The organization plans to make a submission to the CRTC before the March 17 deadline.

“What we want to be able to say is Canadians want more choice, they want lower wireless bills, they think these types of innovative services are important,” he said. “This should be a Canadian success story.”

The U.S. recently signed a law that legalizes commercial asteroid mining and deems any resource extracted from a space rock the property of whoever mined it. No such law exists in Canada.

While regulations are often blasted for stymying progress, Lewicki says rules will be necessary as the space mining industry takes off. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We often talk about the challenge of regulations,â&#x20AC;? Lewicki says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But regulations create an important framework.â&#x20AC;?

Lewicki says there are a number of existing models that could be used to determine asteroid jurisdiction. Countries could lay claim to specific asteroids, lease the land or apply for the rights to harvest minerals. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The only thing that is new about the industry of asteroid mining is it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t happen within what we are familiar with as the national territory of any country, and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the item that the United States has taken the first step on,â&#x20AC;? THE ARTS Yukon’s tale of Trevor the dog to take centre stage in theatre festival Ashley Joannou News Reporter

T

he story of Yukon’s “death-row dog” is the focus of a new musical debuting at a national theatre festival in Whitehorse this summer.

Canada’s Magnetic North Theatre Festival has its home base in Ottawa, but every other year it becomes a travelling show hosted by a different Canadian community. This June it visits Whitehorse.

Among the performances will be Dogtown: the Musical co-produced by Nakai Theatre, Roy Ness, Grant Simpson and the Yukon Circus Society.

The director is Lynda Adams, an instructor at Red Deer College’s School of Creative Arts.

Dogtown is the brainchild of Ness and Simpson. It has been in various stages of production for the last five years.

The musical tells the story of Trevor the dog, a Rottweiler-German shepherd cross who became the centre of a court case that wrapped up in 2010 over whether the City of Whitehorse had the authority to euthanize him.

What was basically an argument over municipal rules and contract law became national news. Stories dubbed him the Yukon’s “death-row dog.”

Bylaw officers rescued Trevor from a home in the McIntyre subdivision in January 2009. They found him tied up in the backyard, with a chain that had been allowed to grow into his neck.

He was turned over to the Humane Society Yukon, which runs the Mae Bachur animal shelter.

Trevor bit multiple people after being adopted and was brought back to the city’s bylaw department.

Bylaw services determined Trevor should be destroyed in the interest of public safety, but the Mae Bachur fought to save Trevor’s life.

The shelter said the dog should never have been brought to bylaw. They argued adoption rules mean Trevor should have been returned to the shelter when the adoption didn’t work out.

The city’s legal bills topped $45,000.

In the end Yukon Supreme Court Justice Ron Veale spared Trevor’s life but ruled anyone interested in adopting him would have to meet strict conditions.

Plans to relocate Trevor to homes in the Ibex Valley, Burwash Landing and Destruction Bay all fell through.

In 2012 Trevor was put down, while still living at the shelter, after he was diagnosed with an undisclosed terminal illness. He

Trevor’s case divided many Yukoners. A quick scan of online comments and letters to the editor show a community split into two camps – “Trevor deserves another chance ” vs. “Trevor deserves to die.”

It had all the makings of good theatre, Ness said: a love story, a divided community, and a tale that went viral beyond the local community.

“There’s all these elements, all about this dog. This one dog.”

Ness said the musical is a satire of the human-dog relationship and the lengths people will go to because of that connection.

“Why does one dog end up in a yard with his neck growing around a chain and another one have a diamond-studded collar?” he said.

Spoofs of some of the central characters in Trevor’s case make an appearance on stage, including Judge Von Reale and the staff at the “Mae B. Shur” animal shelter. So do a chorus of singing ravens, a city dog catcher named Fog and of course Trevor himself.

The starring canine is played by a human actor. Ness hopes to partner with the local shelter to include some real dogs on stage as well.

“I was very wrapped up in it because it was fascinating, and which side was I on? I’m not going to answer that,” Ness said.

Trevor’s journey to the stage began as part of the 2010 Homegrown theatre festival when Ness wrote a single scene staged inside

a courtroom.

From there the Nakai Theatre company agreed to help develop the story into a full production.

Simpson came onboard and both got commissions to develop the script and the songs. They worked with dramaturge DD Kugler and staged some readings.

This is the first time Simpson

and Ness have worked together on a project.

They’ve had such a good time that they’re already talking about what to do next.

“Sometimes we’d go home after a couple of hours and that’s all we had done, joked around together,” Simpson said.

“But out of all that kept coming numbers that we liked.”

In all, 11 original songs make up the complete Dogtown production.

In 2012 news of Trevor’s death broke over the radio moments after Ness had written “the end” on his script.

“I wrote an end scene and it ends happily, Trevor doesn’t die, because he was still alive,” he said.

Trevor’s demise necessitated a rewrite. Now Ness won’t say how the musical ends.

Both men say they’re happy a complete project is ready for the stage.

“It’s not easy for something like this to come to life. It takes a lot of volunteering and a lot of effort. Nakai’s put in a tremendous amount of time, way more than they get paid for, for sure,” Simpson said.

“It feels great.”

Avoid workplace fundraising with digniďŹ ed project for kids

MANNERS DEAR MISS MANNERS: I feel obligated to help my fellow co-workersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; kids when a new fundraising catalogue is brought in to support school and events.

I, too, am selling items to help raise money to lessen the financial blow for my daughterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dance class tuition, costumes, etc.

However, I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t exactly afford to keep buying things from

co-workers who are also selling things. But I feel itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be rude not to, especially since I am asking them to do the same for me. What would be the proper etiquette for dealing with this?

GENTLE READER: As you have experienced, embarrassment is an important component in this method of raising money. The idea is to use social connections to pressure people into buying things they may not otherwise want, or even that they cannot afford.

Miss Manners is aware of the urgency with which extra sources of money are needed in the school system. But using schoolchildren to cause this embarrassment teaches them a bad lesson. It is different from the old method, when they were expected to provide a

service â&#x20AC;&#x201D; typically, car-washing or baking â&#x20AC;&#x201D; that could make them proud of their ability to earn and contribute.

Your situation seems particularly odd, as your buying from those to whom you sell would make all that effort financially futile.

Miss Manners suggests that you work, instead, on devising a dignified way for the children to earn money. Her guess is that organizing them to help adults learn how to use their computers and smartphones would reap a small fortune. You may then, in good conscience, decline to participate in reciprocal, embarrassing buying.

DEAR MISS MANNERS: I found out earlier this week that my

brother was finally marrying his longtime girlfriend in a state 2,500 miles away. They were holding a â&#x20AC;&#x153;housewarming partyâ&#x20AC;? where they were going to also have a â&#x20AC;&#x153;surpriseâ&#x20AC;? wedding.

My parents happened to be there, and my mother emailed me the information. Over the last 24 hours, she has sent pictures of the â&#x20AC;&#x153;happy eventâ&#x20AC;? and clearly expects a response.

Since he didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the courtesy to tell me that he was even getting married, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been ignoring the texts and emails. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m appalled that he didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t bother to call/email/ text me himself about his pending nuptials. Clearly they have been planning the event for a while.

Do I owe the â&#x20AC;&#x153;happy coupleâ&#x20AC;? anything? I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see that I do, but

it seems likely that my mother will expect me to do something.

GENTLE READER: Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s your brother. Do you really want to break with him over his not having had a big wedding with advance notice?

Unlike you, Miss Manners does not imagine that this event was long planned. Her guess is that at most, they were having a housewarming party anyway, and decided that they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need to plan a different event for their informal wedding ceremony.

But like your mother, Miss Manners expects you to do something.

More specifically, she expects you to congratulate your brother and welcome your new sister-in-law.

And to drop those quotation marks around their happiness.

“This one was awesome.

It was twice in a row for Sumner, who won gold at the 2012 Games. He later won silver at the 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games in South Korea.

“They both skated their best, the best they have all year,” said Yukon skating coach Michelle Semaschuk.

“Unfortunately they didn’t have any competition; the other contingents didn’t send anybody in their level … But it doesn’t take away from the fact that they went, trained all year and they still deserve that.

They both have improved a ton.”

Skaters at the Games were judged using Skate Canada’s STAR program that grades elements from merit, to bronze, to silver, up to gold.

McCarthy scored bronze in seven elements and silver in one. Sumner scored silver in three elements, bronze in two and merit in one.

Last week was McCarthy’s first national winter Games.

“Tijana is a really big performer. She loves the crowd, so she’s always very exciting and fun to watch,” said Semaschuk. “She does a really good job interpreting her music and gets the crowd involved.

“Mike did the two jumps in his program really, really well.

He has high skating skills and got silvers on his performance and execution.”

“We didn’t go there 100 per cent, and it is what it is,” said skip Robert Smallwood. “I’m a little disappointed we don’t get to keep playing the rest of the guys, but that’s how they have it set up right now.

“One of my players had a sore back, another one had muscle problems in his legs. It just wasn’t all there.”

The Smallwod rink was ousted with a 7-5 loss to Jamie Koe’s N.W.T. team. Koe and the rest of his Yellowknife rink went on to win the qualifier and reach the main draw with a 7-4 win over Nova Scotia on Saturday.

Koe scored one in the eighth and ninth for the win over Smallwood.

“We had a chance in the ninth to score a deuce, I just had to do a little chip and take out a rock that was on the four-foot behind a couple of guards and I missed it by about an inch,” said Smallwood. “In the 10th end we were coming home with the hammer – we were only two down – but we missed our first guard and that was the end of the game almost … If you don’t get your first guard in play, they just keep knocking stuff out.”

Team Yukon, which included third Jon Solberg, second Clint Abel, lead Scott Odian and alternate David Rach, downed Nunavut 14-4 on Friday for their win.

The Smallwood crew opened the tournament with an 11-3 loss to Nova Scotia. It was a game in which the east coast rink could do no wrong, said Smallwood.

Smallwood and Odian were on Yukon’s rink at last year’s Brier pre-qualifier and were eliminated with a loss to P.E.I. The days of pre-qualifying rounds at the Brier and Scotties Scotties Tournament of Hearts – the national women’s championship – are numbered.

Beginning in 2018, every province and territory will have direct entry into the main draw of both national championships.

Two weeks ago Yukon’s Team Baldwin, led by skip Nicole Baldwin, were eliminated in the Scotties pre-qualifier at the championship in Grande Prairie, Alta.

The season is not over for Smallwood, however. Robert and his wife Jody won their fourth straight Yukon Mixed Doubles Curling Championships in December and will compete at nationals beginning at the end of this month is Saskatoon.

“I’m looking forward to going to that with my wife Jody,” said Smallwood. “There are going to be a lot of good teams there … There are quite a few of husband-and-wife teams and some big names showing up for that one.”

Team of ‘randoms’ wins oldtimer tourney Tom Patrick News Reporter

A

mishmash of unwanted players had impromptu success over the weekend.

Team Tim Hortons – made up of players who weren’t picked up by other teams – went undefeated to win the A division of the Whitehorse Oldtimers Tournament on Sunday at Takhini Arena.

“We didn’t conspire to make this team, it just got put together for us, and it just gelled right off the bat,” said captain Wally Liley. “There were teams that were better than us on paper, but we just gelled and the other teams had a hard time gelling, I guess. And we played hard.”

The squad was Tim Hortons on paper – on the schedule and the scoresheets – but they really just used the jerseys from a team in the Whitehorse Oldtimers Hockey League. Only three players from the champion team play for Tim Hortons.

“We just used the jerseys,” said Liley. “We were just random guys who didn’t get on a team; they just threw a bunch of randoms together. So that’s what just makes it a little sweeter.”

The Timmy team topped the A division with a 3-1 win over Tuesday Night Thunder in the final.

“A few of us were supposed to be on (Thunder) … No one knew who was on this team up to two or three days ago,” he added.

“I’ve been on random teams like this that have been a disaster.”

B.C.’s Dease Lake downed Carmacks 5-2 in the B division final.

Dease Lake’s Brandon Moffatt and Brent Cook each had two goals and Mike Hamhuis had a goal and two assists.

Mike Sage and Andrew Smith scored for Carmacks.

WOHL C posted a 3-2 win over Watson Lake in the C division final.

WOHL’s Derick Bilodeau had two goals, including the gamewinner unassisted. Marty O’Hagan also scored for WOHL (Whitehorse Oldtimer Hockey League).

This year’s tournament featured 12 teams, including ones from Watson Lake and Dawson City.

Glacier Bears held to one medal at B.C. AAAs ‘She swam faster than a required qualifying time for National Age Group Championships for age 14.’

T

hree Glacier Bears swimmers reached nine A finals at the Swim B.C. AAA Championships in Victoria over the weekend.

With a standout performance from 13-year-old Rennes Lindsay, one of those A final appearances resulted in a medal for the Whitehorse swim club.

Lindsay won silver in the 400-metre freestyle with a time of 4:34.00 at the provincial short course championships on Friday.

“She swam faster than a required qualifying time for National Age Group Championships for age 14,” said Glacier Bears head coach Malwina Bukszowana in a news release.

Lindsay, who was competing in the girls 12-13 division, made a total of five A finals in Victoria.

She also placed seventh in the 200 free and eighth in the 50-metre butterfly and 400-metre individual medley.

She kicked off the meet with eighth in the 800 free. “Rennes looked good on the warm up and she held the pace she was training for really well. She swam 9:35.12, which is 11 seconds faster than her best time, and

she came eighth in her age group category,” said Bukszowana. “It was a good start for the swim meet.”

Teammate Hannah Kingscote made two finals in the same age group and set a club record at the championships.

Kingscote, 13, placed seventh in the 50-metre backstroke and set a club record of 1:07.28 in the 100 back for a sixth-place finish.

“This gave her a first qualifying time for National Age Group Championships this summer,” said Bukszowana.

Lindsay’s older sister Cassis placed sixth in the 50 and 100 free races in the girls 14-15 division.

Rennes and Kingscote also reached two B finals each.

Rennes placed 13th in the 100 free and 16th in the 200 medley.

Kingscote raced to ninth in the 50 fly and 16th in the 100 fly.

Huskies, Regals to ďŹ ght for Coy Cup berth this weekend Tom Patrick News Reporter

tâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s do or die for the Whitehorse Huskies this coming weekend.

After six exhibition games so far this season, the stakes are high as the Huskies hosts the Powell River Regals in a bestof-three playoff series that will determine which team goes on to the Coy Cup â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the B.C. AA menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s championship. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re excited for it. This is the series weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been waiting for,â&#x20AC;? said Huskies head coach Michael Tuton. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have the team that we want to play and we have the venue. Anybody playing that series is going to want to play it at home. We can do it in front of the home fans, so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just time to go out and get it done.â&#x20AC;?

The Regals, who won the Coy Cup in 2010, defeated the Port Hardy North Island Capitals in two games last month to reach this weekendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s series against the Huskies. They downed the Caps 6-3 and 4-3 in overtime.

The Huskies, who have a 4-2 season record, split a two-game series against the Regals â&#x20AC;&#x201C; winning 5-3 and losing 6-5 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; in January. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They are bringing up their A team, which is not necessarily the same guys that we saw last time they were up here,â&#x20AC;? said Huskies general manager Matt King. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be a tough match-up, for sure. They have some guys who have played pro, drafted by the NHL. The have (Edmonton Oilersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;) Ryan Nugent-Hopkinsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; older brother, Adam NugentHopkins, on their team. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to be a good match-up.â&#x20AC;?

The Huskies pulled off the split against the Regals in January despite missing some of their best skaters, most of who should be back this weekend.

Assistant captain and defenceman Jared Tuton, who was in Grande Prairie, Alta., will be back.

So will forward and former CHL and ECHL pro Kevin Petovello, who was out with a groin injury.

The team is waiting on word about forward Joe Densmore, who was leading the team with nine points before the last series. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Joe Densmore is still a gametime decision â&#x20AC;&#x201C; whether he can get up here or not,â&#x20AC;? said Michael. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to school down in Victoria.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re pretty happy with the way our roster is going to look and now itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just a matter of having guys ready, which they will be come puck drop on Friday. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to come out flying.
