MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR It has been an exciting time in the City of Langley. The new Timms Community Centre is now open, and programs and classes are in full swing. The new Timms Community Centre represents more than just a recreation centre. The new community and cultural hub draws together three primary user groups – Langley City Hall, Fraser Valley Regional Library (FVRL) and Timms Community Centre – into a single, active and inviting civic facility. Now you can pay your taxes, borrow a book, and work out, all in one convenient and easily accessible location. If you still have not visited the new facility, I strongly encourage you to stop by and check out all the new amenities and expanded programs. Even though the Centre has a new walking/running track, you might want to mix up your fitness routine by going out and exploring the city and our ever expanding trail system. Copies of the Recreation Trail Map can be picked up at City Hall or downloaded at http://city.langley.bc.ca/parks-recreation/parks-trails. With the guide, you can experience the City of Langley’s 422 acres of parks and trails offering everything from the exotic plants in Sendall Garden’s greenhouse to spectacular and rare wildlife in natural settings. Over the years, we’ve seen our city evolve and grow, but one thing that will never change is our strength of purpose and spirit of community. It is a wonderful time to celebrate life in the City of Langley and to experience it as “The Place to Be!” Sincerely, Mayor Ted Schaffer

Choose to Move (65+yrs) This six month, choice-based, physical activity coaching and planning program targets inactive older adults . Program participants will receive coaching and planning support from an Activity Coach to develop a personalized physical activity plan. Plans will be tailored to an older adult’s interests, abilities, income and available community based physical activity opportunities. The activities within personalized plans can consist of attending structured physical activity programs (this will include the ActivAge™ program as well as any pre-existing programs offered by the community) or self-led activities the participant would want to start to engage in (e.g. walking, swimming). Program runs once per week April – September.
ActivAge™ (65+yrs) In a class group led physical activity program for inactive older adults that will introduce participants to the value of physical activity and reinforce their commitment to incorporating it into their daily lives. ActivAge™ will be led by BCRPA registered Fitness Leaders with the Older Adult specialty. The focus is on individuals who would like to become more involved with other activity programs or sports. The unique aspect of this program is that along with providing physical activity specifically designed for older adults, it also encourages social interactions and overall health. The improvement of physical wellbeing is the main goal but the class will also foster social engagement and introduce healthy-living topics as appropriate. This program will run once a week for one hour over a 12 week period.

AQ U AT I C S SWIM KIDS 1 (6+YRS) This level provides an orientation to the water and the pool area and introduces floats and glides with kicks. Children build their endurance by improving distance.
STARFISH (4-18 MONTHS) An introductory class for babies and their parent or caregiver. To enter this level, babies must be able to hold their head up. The goal of this orientation to water class is to experience buoyancy, movement, entries and songs and play in the water. DUCK (18-30 MONTHS) For toddlers or older babies with a parent or caregiver. Toddlers build confidence while enjoying the water through games, songs, and active water play. SEA TURTLE (30-36 MONTHS) A transitional level for preschoolers and their parents. Parents can gradually transfer the preschoolers to the care of the instructor.
SWIM KIDS 3 (6+YRS) This level provides an introduction to front crawl, as well the foundation for making wise choices on where and when to swim. Diving is introduced and children work on floats and changing direction. Endurance is achieved by building strength in flutter kick and a 15 metre swim. SWIM KIDS 4 - (6+YRS) The front crawl, back glide and shoulder roll for back crawl are further developed. Children work on kneeling dives, surface support and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25 metre swim. SWIM KIDS 5 (6+YRS) Back crawl is introduced, along with sculling skills and whip kick on the back. Children try stride dives and receive an ntroduction to safe boating skills. Endurance is developed through dolphin kick and a 50 metre swim.
SEA OTTER (3-5 YRS) With assistance, the child will float and glide on their front and back, and jump into shallow water. Child will open eyes under water and blow bubbles.
SWIM KIDS 6 (6+YRS) Front and back crawl continue to be refined as the elementary backstroke is newly introduced. Children are also introduced to safety on ice, elementary rescue of others with throwing assists, treading water and the front dive. Endurance is built through a 75 metre swim.
SALAMANDER (3-5 YRS) Preschoolers actively learn new swimming skills including assisted floats and glides through games and songs. The fun includes learning to jump into chest deep water.
SWIM KIDS 7 (6+YRS) Level 7 continues to build skills and endurance for front crawl, back crawl and elementary backstroke and introduces whip kick on the front. Children learn about airway and breathing obstructions, and participate in timed treading water for increasing endurance. Endurance is built through timed treading water and a 150 metre swim.
SUNFISH (3-5 YRS) Assisted by an Instructor, preschoolers work on stroke and skills progressions. Learning also focuses on good judgement in, on and around the water and entries and floats in deep water.
80
SWIM KIDS 2 (6+YRS) This level helps the child build skills in front and back swims. Children are introduced to deep water activities and proper use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Endurance is built on flutter kicking with assisted glides.
SWIM KIDS 8 (6+YRS) Level 8 provides an introduction to the breaststroke, foot first surface dives, and rescue entries. Children learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, and the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults. Endurance is built on the dolphin kick and a 300 metre swim.
CROCODILE (3-5 YRS) Preschoolers start independent glides and kicking in deep water. Endurance is built through increasing distance for front and back swims. Swimmers learn about the dolphin kick and try synchro skills in the water.
SWIM KIDS 9 (6+YRS) Front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke and breaststroke continue to be refined. In this level children are encouraged to try combining different strokes and kicks for fitness. They also work on head-first shallow dives and standing dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400 metre swim.
WHALE (3-5 YRS) Children will learn to swim independently and participate in team games. Preschoolers will increase their distance and improve skills in front and back swims. Swimmers also learn about throwing assists to help another person in the water.
SWIM KIDS 10 (6+YRS) Further refinement of strokes, with an introduction to butterfly and scissor kick as a warm up/cool down stroke for fitness. Children learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and head-first and feet-first shallow dives. Endurance is built using dolphin kick and butterfly drills and a 500 metre swim.
