City-owned facility made $500k more than expected
Higher-than-expected revenues and lower expenses in 2015 helped boost Abbotsford International Airport to one of its best years on record. The city-owned airport’s 2015 financial report showed the airport made $2.31 million – more than half a million dollars in excess of what had been expected at the start of the year. The profit was also an increase in the 2014 total of $2.07 million. Revenues were $243,000 higher than planned thanks to concession revenues and fuel sales both for Air Canada Rouge and car rental agencies. Expenses shrunk, thanks in part to another mild winter that allowed the airport to get by without the need for contracted snow removal. “The airport is in fine fiscal shape,” airport general manager Parm Sidhu said. “We have a sustainable business model that empowers entrepreneurs and partners with the business sector.” The operating profit was transferred to the airport’s capital reserves, along with $907,050 received through the sale of a hangar and two buildings on site.

For most local children, March 28 will mark the return to school after two weeks of spring break. But for 91 other boys and girls, that day will mark their first time attending school in Canada – or, in some cases, ever. The Abbotsford school district has set in motion a plan to slowly integrate dozens of Syrian children into the school system. After orientation sessions take place March 9 to 11 to prepare the refugee students for school, five “sheltered” classes will begin after spring break. The classes will focus on helping the new students – some of whom might have had little to no formal education – adjust to the Canadian system and improve their English. The hope is that the newcomers – the district prefers that term to “refugees” – will also be able to engage with fellow students and build friendships at lunch and during other parts of the school day, according to Kanta Naik, the school district’s director of instruction. Earlier this week, Naik briefed the school board both on the transition plans and the district’s progress in educating such ELL students. The report showed that students who enter classes in elementary school with low English proficiency are generally catching up with fellow students by the start of high school. Naik said there’s no reason to think the Syrian students will be any different. “If we start and keep them with other kids, they’ll learn the language quicker than just through instruction.”

The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) is seeking the public’s help in trying to track down a stolen boat and trailer valued at $150,000. The 2016 Malibu Wakesetter 23SLV boat and red Malibu boat trailer were stolen at about 6 a.m. Sunday from Performance Watersports in the 31800 block of Mercantile Way after thieves cut through a fence. Sgt. Judy Bird said an alert citizen called police after seeing a white Ford F350 pickup truck towing the trailer eastbound on Highway 1. Bird said the driver thought it was strange that the boat was still covered in plastic and that it was on the road at this time of year and so early in the morning. The driver called police, who viewed the man’s dashcam video. Investigators determined that the pickup truck had also been stolen. None of the vehicles have been recovered. Anyone with information is asked to contact the APD at 604-859-5225, text 222973 (abbypd) or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Adults must set example on pot In a December issue, on the front page of your paper, there was a caption which read: “Liquor stores eye marijuana sales.� Now it appears that some pharmacies are wanting to get in on the sale of marijuana. Will they be called “drug stores�? If, by an unfortunate circumstance, our unthinking government legalizes this harmful addictive drug for recreational use, I agree that the best method of sales would be through tightly controlled liquor-type stores. It is very comforting to have a government so concerned about the need of some individuals that a high priority plank in their election and legislation strategy was to legalize recreational pot. There has been a successful move by some politically correct individuals and organizations to have Christ removed from Christmas, and the Lord’s prayer from schools and public areas. Who knows what else? I presume these removals were to ensure our minds are not contaminated? What are these groups doing to ensure that the minds of our youth are not contaminated by marijuana? Why am I concerned about this drug? Some physical effects of marijuana are (Government of Canada information): increased heart rate, drop in blood pressure, fainting, heart attack, stroke, chronic
cough, phlegm buildup in throat, chest problems, lung infections, addiction, plus many others. Marijuana smoking during pregnancy has been associated with long-lasting harm to the exposed child’s memory and other brain functions as well as hyperactive

A reminder on worker safety, on the anniversary of tragedy Kelvin GAWLEY Contributor
A candlelight vigil will mark the ninth anniversary of the tragic crash that killed three farmworkers near Abbotsford. The ceremony starts at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 13 at the Golden Tree Farmworkers Monument on George Ferguson Way behind Clearbrook Library. The
anniversary serves as a reminder of the importance of worker safety regulation and enforcement, according to the B.C. Federation of Labour. Three women died when the van carrying them, and 14 others, to work skidded out of control on the TransCanada Highway in Abbotsford on March 7, 2007.

Abbotsford may soon be looking a little greener, with a promise from the city to place 150 new trees in residential areas. The city will do the planting with a $25,000 grant from TD Canada, a charity devoted to “greening” urban and rural environments in Canada. They will be planted by city staff along residential streets around the downtown core and along a portion of South Fraser Way. Residents and business owners will receive an information package informing them of the project. They will be able to fill out a form selecting what kind of tree they would prefer. Of the 140 applicant communities, Abbotsford was one of 13 grant recipients, winning a total of $300,000. There were two other B.C. winners: Coquitlam and View Royal on Vancouver Island.

I can assure you this easy side-dish will convert even the most skeptical cabbage avoiders. The creamy, mild flavour of these wedges surprised me, I never would have expected such a delicious side dish from cabbage. In addition, the sauce pairs beautifully with a mild fish, so go crazy and double the sauce recipe, roast some seafood, and you’re set for dinner! All you need is a loaf of crusty bread to round out a nutritious meal.

Cut cabbage half into four equal wedges, leaving the core intact and set on prepared baking sheet. Resist the urge to cut the wedges into smaller pieces as the bigger pieces hold together better and cook more evenly. You can always cut them into smaller pieces when serving.
FOOD & WINE PAIRING: This Chardonnay is lightly oaked, allowing the flavours of the fruit to shine through. Enjoy with chicken, grilled veal chops, lobster ravioli, panseared scallops with herbed butter sauce, or roasted cabbage wedges.
Mix oil and garlic, and use a pastry brush to coat the cut side of each wedge with oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Turn wedges and repeat. Place the baking sheet in the oven and cook for 10-12 minutes. Flip the wedges and roast until nicely browned, 8-10 minutes more.

Meanwhile, make the sauce by adding all the sauce ingredients to a small saucepan and cook over medium heat until the butter is completely melted. Keep warm.
To serve, place the wedges on a plate and drizzle with the sauce. Sprinkle with chives or parsley, if desired.

The Farmer and the Foodie For me, the best part of any meal is the vegetable sides. Being a farmer, you might think that it’s all about the meat, but nothing gets me as excited as an aromatic, slightly charred pan of roasted vegetables and I’ve long been a convert to this cooking method. Two things happen when you roast vegetables. First, roasting allows some of the water to evaporate out of the vegetables, intensifying the flavour and making everything taste “more�. In looking for an alternative to last month’s costly imported cauliflower, I decided to try my favourite technique with locally grown cabbage, and no vegetable has surprised me more by its transformation into a meltingly sweet, tender dish than this one. Yobdee flips for water PEG PETERS RUN FOR WATER
Yobdee flies off the bars and sticks her landing perfectly earning a gold in the competition. At 8 years old she definitely has incredible potential. “I’m so proud of her for how well she is doing in gymnastics but its her dedication to raising money and awareness for Run for Water that really makes me happy,” comments mother Sara Marazzi. Last year Yobdee raised $8,186 through her “Yobdee Flips for Water” campaign. She was first exposed to the Run for Water education resources “Envision a Better World” at South Poplar Elementary school in Abbotsford. Ironically this was the same educational material that Sara herself was hired to create for Run for Water.

“Writing and designing the Global Citizenship resources for K-12 was a perfect fit for me”, notes Sara, who as an experienced curriculum writer worked in Ethiopia for a number of years. This time it was personal. “When I was living in Ethiopia I adopted Yobdee, whose mother had passed away. Money for agriculture technology non-profit OPTOMETRIST Bioenterprise BC aims to help promote expansion of “agri-tech” businesses A not-for-profit organization that aims to help develop high-tech agriculture businesses will receive provincial funds to continue its work. Bioenterprise BC, which aims to help promote the creation and expansion of agri-techonology businesses, will receive $800,000 over four years, B.C.’s Technology, Innovation and Citizens’ Services minister Amrik Virk announced in Abbotsford recently. Blueberry production in B.C. increased by about 4,500 tons in 2015, which marks the fruit’s highest level of production over the last decade. The province exported $169 million worth of blueberries in 2014, and it is one of the B.C.’s largest agriculture exports. The vast majority of blueberries grown in B.C. come from the Fraser Valley. Canada-wide blueberry production is also at record highs. Almost 183,000 tons of blueberries were picked in 2015, which is about 700 tons more than last year. The land cultivated for blueberries in B.C. has almost doubled since 2006. Canada in total has increased its cultivated land for blueberries by a quarter since 2006. Canada is the world’s largest producer of wild blueberries, according to Agriculture Canada.

Concert features international fiddle group International fiddle sensation Barrage 8 performs in Abbotsford on Tuesday, March 15 with violinist Calvin Dyck, the Abbotsford Youth Orchestra, and the Langley Community Music School Cello Ensemble. The concert begins at 7 p.m. at the Abbotsford Arts Centre, 2329 Crescent Way. Barrage 8 is the latest project from John Crozman, Dean Marshall and Tony Moore, the original creators of the hit show Barrage. Utilizing the same energy, panache and innovative stage performance that Barrage was known for, Barrage 8 features all the instruments in the modern string family. The “8” in the name represents a re-imagining of the string octet: five violins, viola, cello and double bass. The concert combines upbeat music with choreography, lighting effects, video and visual backdrops. Currently on tour in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands, Barrage 8 is doing two stops in Canada on their world tour. Their performances offer a diverse fusion of cultures, musical styles and performance vitality. The music combines layered vocal arrangements and pulsating beats and rhythms. Sheep know the shepherd’s voice By Simon Gibson Contributor
My wife and I recently had the privilege of touring the Middle East: Egypt, Jordan and Israel. It was an amazing opportunity to visit places I had only read about: Jerusalem, Petra, Mount Sinai, Cairo, the Sea of Galilee, and many more. Our guide, during a group dinner one evening, told us about an incident that took place in the late Sixties in the rural area around Bethlehem. The government had confiscated hundreds of sheep for non-payment of taxes. A woman pleaded to the commanding
officer that she must have her sheep to survive (her husband was in jail). He reluctantly agreed but did not think she could identify her sheep in the huge group. Her son began playing his flute and immediately 13 heads popped up and they soon joined her. Our guide told us, “Sheep know the shepherd’s voice.� I was astonished the sheep had become so bonded to the woman and her son, so surprised that they could be identified through the sound of a flute. I began to realize, on reflection, that we are all looking for a shepherd, someone to guide us, someone to believe in. Without a shepherd, we can flounder and feel vulnerable: perhaps we can even feel a sense of
emptiness. Some of us have experienced disappointment with family members and friends. Employers, too, have failed to value us and colleagues have let us down. In desperation, perhaps, we call out. We need a shepherd! The Bible talks about this: “The Lord is the one who goes ahead of you; he will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you.� God, through Jesus Christ, is a reliable guide – he is the one who created you, knows you by name, and wants to fellowship with you. You may feel unworthy to even call out to God. You might think you have done too many bad things – sins – that God would never accept you.
The most quoted Bible verse, however, should encourage you: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only son, that whosoever should believe in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.� Jesus, who was perfect, died on the cross – once and for all – to take away your sins. He loves you and wants to be your shepherd. Why not call on him today? Confess your need for him and trust him to lead you and deliver you from your temptations. SHROPSHIRE William Charles Gerrard Lowe September 12th, 1942 - February 29th, 2016 Bill will be sadly missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of the past 25 years Maria; children Billy, Theresa (John), Carol (Ross), Matt (Megan) and Lenore (Scott); grandchildren Cormac, Wyatt, Hanno, Elisse, Annika, Jack, Chloe and Anona. He was predeceased by his parents Charles and Vera Lowe. Bill was born in 1942, Preeceville, Saskatchewan. He moved to BC as a child and lived in several different communities. He began his career as a manager in the oil and gas industry, but his entrepreneurial spirit often led him back to his passion for buying and selling collectors items. Bill had a gentle and kind nature. He loved dogs and horses, even racing chariot horses in his youth and raising miniature horses later in life. Bill had increasing health challenges in the past few years, but during this difficult time he had an experience of what has been described as the “peace that surpasses understanding.” His family is thankful for this peace and the generous support of his close friends Don and Ann Humeny. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the SPCA. A private celebration of life will be held.
Brenda Mae Brenda Mae Shropshire aged 70 years passed away peacefully at Mission Memorial Hospital on March 1st, 2016. She is survived by her loving husband Larry Shropshire; son Michael (MerryLou); grandchildren Sarah and Ryan; brothers Syd (Leslie), Doug (Janet), David (deceased) (Betty) and Tim (deceased) Boardman. It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Mom, June Alsbury on Friday February 26, 2016. Mom passed away on the one year anniversary of Dad’s memorial. They were lovebirds and best friends, married for 62 years. With her passing, Dad will get his angel back. Mom leaves to mourn, daughters Ruth Withers (Rick), Carol Siemens (Mark), Ann Klassen (Matt) and son, Michael Alsbury and precious grandchildren Kelly (Gail), Tyler, Allison (Andy), Jennifer (Shahab), Morgan and great grandsons, Wyatt and Riley. She also leaves her dear sisters, Leone Rose and sister-in-law, Diane Wiesner and nieces and nephews. Mom was an excellent homemaker who always welcomed family and friends. Her house was filled with love and laughter. She had a wonderful sense of humour. Mom had a zest for life and most of all loved being active. She skied, played tennis, sailed and took part in many “fun runs”. She was an accomplished dancer and as a couple, she and Dad spent most weekends dancing with a group of very special friends. Mom was also a talented watercolor artist, belonging to the Fraser Valley Watercolor Society for a number of years. Lambrecht (Bert) November 20, 1931 ~ March 7, 2016 On the evening of March 7th Bert was released from his earthly body into eternity to go be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Left behind to mourn his death are his wife Anne (Advocaat) of 60 years, his only brother Arnold, his two daughters Jane (Russell Graff) and Carmen (Henning Buch), and 7 grandchildren - John (Lisa), Paul and Esther Graff; Melissa (Justin Mueller), Gideon, Joel and Kevin Buch. He also delighted in his 3 great-granddaughters, Kajsa, Madeline and Aida Graff. Bert was born in Delft, The Netherlands and emigrated on his 18th birthday, landing in Medicine Hat, AB working as a farm/ranch hand. He obtained an associate Engineering degree from Calvin College and spent his life working in the heating and air-conditioning business. He took his family back to the Netherlands, working there for 7 years before returning to Abbotsford, BC and running his own business (Janzen’s Heating Ltd.) there. When it was time to retire they were blessed to be able to live in a lovely log house high up overlooking Penticton and he enjoyed some gardening, woodworking and doing mechanical work around his house. Interment will take place at the Naramata Cemetery and the Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 12, 2016, 3:00 pm at the Church of the Nazarene, 523 Jermyn Point, Penticton, BC.
