Beautiful District of North Saanich is the first community you will see when you arrive on the Saanich Peninsula, whether by air or sea. We are the gateway to the south Island region, the location of Victoria International Airport and BC Ferries’ Swartz Bay Terminal.

Sidney-by-the-Sea is the gateway to Vancouver Island. Our beautiful seaside community with its alluring, small-town charm attracts people from around the world to visit and relocate.

Here in Central Saanich we have a rich and diverse community with an exceptional quality of life afforded by wonderful natural places like Centennial Park and deep agricultural roots worthy of the rural setting, all a short distance to downtown Victoria.

Transportation and related commercial activity comprise a major segment of our local businesses. A second sector is government. The Federal Institute of Ocean Sciences and the Federal Centre for Plant Health both house extensive scientific research in their respective fields. With a third of our land area in the Agricultural Land Reserve, it is not surprising that agriculture is our third major economic sector. Both large and small farm operations contribute to the variety of food producing activities in the District.

A volunteer-run farm market operates on Saturdays from April to October each year.

Our business activities extend beyond these sectors, with the location and physical aspects of North Saanich encouraging marine, high tech and many home-based businesses plus large and small commercial endeavors. All of these are enhanced by the heathy living and safe community found in the District, with our extensive walking trails, beach accesses, viewpoints and magnificent parks.

But Sidney is more than just a “pretty face”; it is a place with a long-term, community plan that supports business and development. It is perfectly situated as the transportation hub for the Island with Highway 17, the main thoroughfare, running through the community and easy access to all major modes of travel. The Swartz Bay, BC Ferry Terminal, Washington State Ferry Terminal and Victoria Airport, are all within a 10 minute drive.

The village atmospheres of Brentwood Bay and Saanichton combine with the service oriented approach of the Keating Business Park to create an attractive atmosphere for small and medium sized businesses to locate conveniently on a transportation route between the ferries, Victoria Airport and the heart of the city. We recognize the need for business to thrive is created by having customers in their neighbourhood, while expansion is dependent on customers coming from around the region and beyond.

As it has in the past Central Saanich remains committed to creating policies that foster an environment that is welcoming for entrepreneurs to create new jobs by developing new and existing industries such as high tech, manufacturing, construction and engineering services. The infrastructure built by the district is well suited to accommodate this objective.

to the Saanich Peninsula The Saanich Peninsula is home to the communities of North Saanich, Sidney, and Central Saanich as well as northern portions of Saanich (Royal Oak) and north eastern portions of the Highlands.

The Saanich Peninsula is the historical homeland of four Coast Salish First Nations bands: Tseycum, Tsawout, Tsartlip, and Pauquachin. The Saanich Peninsula represents an area rich in archaeological sites and cultural diversity. The region lies in the rain shadow of the Vancouver Island mountain range and Washington’s Olympic Peninsula mountain range, and offers the driest conditions on Vancouver Island.

The Town of Sidney owns the ferry terminal that welcomes the Washington State Ferry from Anacortes Washington for nine months of the year. The ferry runs from its home base to Orcas Island and Friday Harbour, Washington before docking in Sidney.

The Three-hour international run “between friends” is acknowledged as one of the most beautiful “short cruises” in the world and its first voyage in March heralds the return of tourism season on the Saanich Peninsula.

The Peninsula is served by BC Transit buses, including the iconic double-deckers, which run regularly between Swartz Bay, Sidney, Saanichton, and Victoria. BC Ferries operates a small terminal located in the heart of Brentwood Bay. This ferry carries passengers across the Saanich Inlet to Mill Bay and is a relaxing scenic alternative to driving the Malahat (Trans-Canada) Highway.

Revolution 3D Printers specializes in the development and manufacture of 3D printers for classrooms and for small offices. In April of 2015 the 443 Maritime Helicopter Squadron officially opened its new $155 million, 215,000 square-foot building.

The project also included the construction of an aircraft apron, a taxiway, an aircraft wash area and refuelling cabinet, a vehicle parking area, a guard house with security barriers and fencing. The Squadron employs 200 military personnel and operates four to six CH-124 Sea King helicopters.

The new hangar facility allows the squadron to accommodate the new CH-148 Cyclone helicopter through the hangar’s additional capabilities, space, and technology.

Sidney is a book lover’s delight. As Canada’s only Booktown, Sidney is home to a unique collection of specialty bookshops, all operated by owners who are experts in their field. They offer special collections that feature thousands of titles and categories.

You can’t walk down Beacon Avenue, Sidney’s main street, without encountering an interesting collection of books.

Every Thursday evening during the summer months - from mid-May through August Beacon Avenue comes alive with the Sidney Street Market. This popular event stretches out for four blocks and features an eclectic array of enticing wares, from the artistic to the agricultural, plus great live music placed at strategic intervals throughout. It’s a favourite with visitors. Thousands attend this vibrant market 12

each week and locals love the opportunity to purchase fresh produce from area farmers.

Plenty of adventure is to be had on the Saanich Peninsula, ocean-going or otherwise.

Whale watching with Sidney Whale Watching is high on the list of “must-do” activities for many visitors. The more introspective may enjoy eco-cruising with Sidney Harbour Cruising, or a kayaking adventure with Paddle in the Park. Boaters and more adventuresome kayakers will want to take in the wonders of the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve which includes all of the Gulf Islands and surrounding waters. During the summer months, the Alpine Sidney Spit Ferry makes the short run from a dock at the end of Beacon Avenue to Sidney Island.

Visitors can take their pick of accommodations on the peninsula, from the high end to more modest lodgings, from hotels to bed and breakfasts. The peninsula also offers a wonderful variety of dining experiences.

Brentwood Bay’s downtown core has undergone a beautification and now a number of properties in the village are undergoing re-development. The Brentwood Bay Lodge & Spa is the town’s seaside resort hotel, sitting on the shore of Brentwood Bay next to the Brentwood Bay - Mill Bay ferry terminal.

People who live on the Saanich Peninsula love their fresh air and their fresh food! From early spring through early winter, peninsula growers offer a cornucopia of the freshest garden produce and berries, free range eggs and poultry, wines, beer and ciders, and nursery plants and flowers.

Fields of daffodils dazzle with eye-popping colour, beginning in early March. As picking rolls on through the end of the month, thousands upon thousands of daffodils

Plump, red June strawberries are a favourite at farmers’ markets in North and Central Saanich and at the Sidney Street Market. There are ripe raspberries and blueberries galore and the fields at Victoria Lavender Farm are bursting with colour and fragrance by June’s end.

And by that time, everything but the peninsula’s renowned sweet corn is ready for market.

Your body is hard-wired to react to stress in ways meant to protect you from threats. Though threats of predators and other aggressors are rare today, that doesn’t mean life is free of stress. Demands of large workloads, taking care of a family, or even a morning commute can be seen by your body as threats, causing you to feel stressed. While some stress is a normal part of life, excessive stress can lead to illness including heart disease, sleep problems and digestive issues, being unproductive and distracted at work, or even time away from employment.

Unfortunately, there is no single indicator that will let you know if an employee is under excessive stress. Stress can manifest itself in many different ways, including physical, psychosocial and behavioural changes.
