Central Alberta Film Festival set for debut The Red Carpet Affair to Remember gala takes place March 16th

T

he Central Alberta arts community is about to receive a brand new way to promote films, filmmaking and the artists behind the camera.

The Central Alberta Film Festival (CAFF) is a new not-for-profit organization that has been created to support, promote and educate the community on local filmmakers and the many genres they produce. The group was created by Ranjit Mullakady, founder and president and Naeem Rabbani, festival director.

The group has been in the works for some time and is proud to finally announce their presence in the community.

“We know that there is no lack of talent in Central Alberta - there are artists, visual artists, actors and filmmakers. We want to provide them with a platform to showcase their work. At the same time, we want to educate the audience so they can become aware and involved,” said Rabbani.

Both Rabbani and Mullakady have extensive experience within the filmmaking industry. Mullakady worked in Bollywood for approximately seven years as a production manager before moving to Canada. Rabbani has worked as a documentary filmmaker for nearly 20 years, working in Canada for the last five.

“I came to Canada with the dream that I could continue with my life in filmmaking,” said Mallakady.

“When I came to Red Deer nobody spoke my language or was making films or doing production. I was kind of disappointed. My mission is to create momentum for visual arts in the community and support the local filmmakers, and the kids. Canadians have supported me for the last 15 years and it’s time to give something back to the community. I want to do that by supporting local art through CAFF.” Rabbani said he’s been making documentaries and films for about 20 years now, but is always excited to learn about the industry. After studying graphic design in Ontario, he moved to Red Deer where he met up with Mullakady and together they crafted the loose idea of the Central Alberta Film Festival into a now concrete organization.

To welcome Central Albertans to CAFF, the team is hosting a gala event on March 16th. The Red Carpet Affair to Remember event will take place at the West Point Conference Centre from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., with tickets at $50. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be served and guests are encouraged to dress up for the red carpet-style event.

The group will promote all kinds of films, from short films to feature length movies and animations. Mullakady said they hope to focus on documentaries produced by local independent artists, but are looking forward to seeing what other kinds of art and film are produced in the area.

“We’re here to promote, support and educate the community on local filmmaking and filmmakers,” Mullakady said.

Search continues for woman missing for two weeks

BY ERIN FAWCETT RED DEER EXPRESS It has now been two weeks since a Red Deer woman went missing and her family continues to desperately seek answers into her disappearance.

Lorie Joy Nichols, 49, was last seen on the morning of Feb. 23rd in Red Deer. Her husband, Greg Nichols reported her missing later that evening.

Earlier this week a tip surfaced that Lorie may have changed her hair colour from brunette to blonde. Lorie is described as 5’2” tall with a slender build. She has hazel eyes. She was last seen wearing a three-quarter length charcoal winter jacket with gray/ black lace up winter boots, medium blue tight fittings jeans with discernible tears to the knees and thighs. She is believed to have a gray woolen loose fitting toque and an over shoulder dark green/ black strapped bag with white and yellow lettering.

“It has been strongly suggested to us that she may have changed her appearance and she may now be blonde and no longer brunette,” said Greg, adding there is also strong indication that Lorie may have been seen last Saturday morning at Burger Boy. As for Feb. 23rd, Greg said the day began like any other.

“On the morning of the 23rd I

went to work a little earlier than I normally do. My youngest son Seth is 17 and he goes to Hunting Hills High School. He has epilepsy and learning difficulties. Lorie and Seth are very, very, very close,” said Greg, adding the pair have been married for 25 years and have three children. “She got him up and fed him breakfast, got him off to school and then apparently she travelled east of our place to Clearview to visit a lady named Fran she had befriended who she would see on a regular basis just to make sure Fran’s spirits were up and to chat. We spoke with Fran who said Lorie was disturbed that morning and almost couldn’t stay for whatever reason. The neighbours then saw Lorie come back to the house at 10 a.m. They did not see her leave again.”

Greg said Lorie did her normal routine around the house that morning which included making the beds, taking the garbage out, cleaning up and doing some laundry. “When she left the home she did not take any personal effects with her - no toiletries, no extra clothes - she basically walked out the door.”

Greg added Lorie’s credit cards and bank cards have not been used since her disappearance. She did not have a cell phone nor access to a vehicle as she does not have her driver’s license.

“Lorie is a very, very, very compassionate and charitable person.

Lorie has volunteered and has had a really strong connection with the homeless community downtown.

She used to volunteer at Loaves and Fishes. We would make meals

and feed people out of the back of our truck on Sunday nights at Loaves and Fishes when there was no other meal in town to be had,” said Greg. “She is the kindest person I’ve ever met in my whole, entire life and she really makes a big impact on everybody that she comes across.

“The sad part is that Lorie has struggled with depression and anxiety for our whole relationship.”

Greg added it is out of character for Lorie to leave and not tell anyone where she is going.

“When she wasn’t at home when I got home on Tuesday night, I knew that was a red flag for me.

When the boys hadn’t seen her, that was a red flag. I didn’t want to hit the panic button and alert the authorities unnecessarily, so I set a time on the clock for 9 p.m. and said if I hadn’t seen her by then I was absolutely going to the police - at 9:01 p.m. I was downtown,” said Greg. “They responded and there was a member at our home by 10:30 p.m. and they did a search of the home and they interviewed both of my boys privately. The next morning they had Search and Rescue and had helicopters out.”

Greg added one of the things that helps with Lorie’s anxiety is going for walks. “She travels a lot so it was not unusual for her to walk every day and she can put

on miles - it is not uncommon for her to put on 15 miles a day. One of the things that was irregular about this walk was we have three large dogs and she would normally take a dog with her and she did not so that was one of the things that made me concerned,” he said, adding he has recently offered a $5,000 reward for any information regarding Lorie’s direct whereabouts and/or direction to her exact location.

Greg added he believes that Lorie could be in Red Deer’s downtown area.

“We strongly believe that she is moving with people that misguidedly want to ‘protect her’,” he said. “We really, really do not care where she’s gone or who she has been with and we don’t care why she left. Our only thing that we want is to bring her home and to get her back with her family.”

Meanwhile, Greg said his family is holding up the best they can as they eagerly await information regarding Lorie’s whereabouts.

“The boys have done remarkably well. My youngest one is starting to feel disconnected - I can tell.

He is starting to withdraw a little bit,” he said. “They are waiting for dad to bring mom home.”

CGL is also committed to supporting Crohn’s and Colitis Canada, a condition Litzenberger was diagnosed with at 19 years of age. While being hospitalized in 2009, he decided he needed to do more to raise awareness.

That year, he did the local walk as a fundraiser.

He was struck by the number of children there who had the disease, as he had assumed it was something adults suffered from.

He then set out to do what he could to support Crohn’s and Colitis Canada both financially and from a ‘building awareness’ point of view as well.

“I approached them basically about a co-branding set-up, as well as a donation matching program. Clients can donate through us – we have separate account set up for Crohn’s and Colitis Canada.”

CGL then matches that donation up to ten percent of the client’s invoice.

“Because of that we are on pace this year to have raised over $50,000 since we started the program.”

Meanwhile, as Litzenberger has pointed out, much of the company’s success boils down to connecting well with clients.

International Women’s Day points to continuing inequality March 8th marked International Women’s Day - which organizers say both points to the global achievements of women and also that gender parity has slowed in many places, according to www.InternationalWomensDay.com.

The World Economic Forum predicted in 2014 that it would take until 2095 to achieve global gender parity.

“Then one year later in 2015, they estimated that a slowdown in the already glacial pace of progress meant the gender gap wouldn’t close entirely until 2133.”

In today’s day and age, that is hard to believe. It seems in so many ways that we have come so far, but when it comes to this issue, we are moving at a snail’s pace.

According to the web site, everyone - men and women - can pledge to take a concrete step to help achieve gender parity more quickly - whether to help women and girls achieve their ambitions, call for gender-balanced leadership, respect and value difference, develop more inclusive and flexible cultures or root out workplace bias.

“Each of us can be a leader within our own spheres of influence and commit to take pragmatic action to accelerate gender parity.”

According to Wikipedia, the earliest Women’s Day observance was held on Feb. 28th, 1909, in New York; it was organized by the Socialist Party of America in remembrance of the 1908 strike of the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union.

In August 1910, an International Women’s Conference was organized to precede the general meeting of the Socialist Second International in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Inspired in part by the American socialists, German Socialist Luise Zietz proposed the establishment of an annual ‘International Woman’s Day’ and was seconded by fellow socialist and later communist leader Clara Zetkin, although no date was specified at that conference.

Delegates agreed with the idea as a strategy to promote equal rights, includ-

ing suffrage, for women.

The following year, on March 19th, 1911, IWD was marked for the first time, by over a million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland.

In the West, International Women’s Day was first observed as a popular event after 1977 when the United Nations General Assembly invited member states to proclaim March 8th as the UN Day for women’s rights and world peace.

Minister Stephanie McLean issued the following statement yesterday.

“International Women’s Day is a day to celebrate women’s accomplishments and our society’s progress towards gender equality, and to reflect on the work we still need to do. In Alberta under our government, progress has taken the form of a gender-balanced cabinet, a new Status of Women Ministry that was officially launched yesterday, and steps to accommodate MLAs who are expecting or raising children,” she said. “International Women’s Day is also a day to remember

the challenges that women continue to face here in Alberta and beyond, including economic insecurity and high rates of violence. By working together to achieve equality for women in Alberta, we will build a stronger and more prosperous province and a better society for all.”

Meanwhile, Catherine Booth, who along with her husband William, who founded the Salvation Army in London, put it like this way back in 1859. It was a time when it was simply unimaginable that women did much outside of the home.

But Catherine and William both knew it was time to sow seeds of change - both in church ministry and in how women’s roles were perceived in society.

“There seems to be a great deal of unnecessary fear of women occupying any position which involves publicity, lest she should be rendered unfeminine by the indulgence of ambition or vanity; but why should woman any more than man be charged with ambition when impelled to use her talents for the good of her race?”

Denmark supermarket selling expired food products Apparently Copenhagen is home to the world’s first supermarket to intentionally sell expired food products. It’s about time.

WeFood stems from a community-led effort.

The charitable organization officially opened in February after a successful crowd-funding effort and is operated by volunteers.

The store’s aim is to reduce waste, repurpose unwanted food and raise funds for regions of the world where food supply is an issue.

What is most powerful about this model is its intent to serve the broader public. The Danish supermarket hopes to attract consumers who are environmentally conscious and individuals with less means. But, ultimately, WeFood will do business with anyone.

Pressure to reduce waste

The European Union has pledged to reduce food waste by 50% by 2025 – and research has shown that food waste is brought about by several avoidable causes. Mainly, we know that food waste is essentially the negative outcome of highly inefficient food distribution systems and detrimental consumer habits. WeFood attempts to address these two main failings at once by offering recoverable food products to progressive consumers.

The initiative is supported by the Danish minister

for food and environment.

The government actually lauded the organization’s effort to make a difference.

Officials were present when the store opened, sending a clear signal that such a project is morally acceptable and economically necessary.

But the project still carries risks, which are linked to two main issues: food safety and procurement.

Selling expired food products can increase the risk of food-borne illnesses and outbreaks. WeFood makes it explicit that buying anything in its store warrants better risk management practices at home by the consumer. Encouraging the consumer to reduce risks when preparing meals is key to a sound communication plan.

Getting consistent supplies is also a challenge for a store like WeFood.

To make sure shelves remain filled, unwanted but perfectly edible food must come from a broad network of businesses: local supermarkets, butchers, produce importers and even food processors are engaged. These groups must be continuously involved so WeFood can rely on a steady flow of store traffic. This is critical to make WeFood’s model sustainable.

Denmark has reduced its food waste by 25% in the last five years, which signifies how the community has evolved in recent years, at least in Denmark.

The United States wastes 50% more food than in 1990. In Canada, $31 billion worth of food is wasted every year, indicating there is definitely room for improvement. Some Canadian enterprises are attempting to stop the

waste. Canada’s Second Harvest repurposes food, but it only caters to residents who are chronically short of food.

Although it is evolving, Canada is nowhere near where Europe is when it comes to minimizing waste of all kinds. To similarly reduce food waste in Canada, our approach to food-related risks will need to change.

That kind of effort in Canada would pay off, because what WeFood is doing is very transformative.

Reducing food waste is not simple, and can be used by governments looking to garner more political support. This grassroots-based approach has more merit than France’s decision to force supermarkets to donate unsold food to charities or to redirect products for animal feed. Most large supermar-

kets in France already do what the law now requires them to do.

The Copenhagen initiative is not about getting more votes. WeFood not only captures the essence of a group’s will to reduce waste and assist those in need, it democratizes important issues like food insecurity and waste. Reducing food waste can easily unite the poor and the rich, the left and the right.

To make food systems more efficient, from farm to fork, and to make food waste everyone’s business is the right call. Adding value to products that would have been otherwise rejected by food retailing conformists only makes sense.

Lindsay trial wraps up

BY ERIN FAWCETT RED DEER EXPRESS The trial of a man to determine whether or not he is criminally responsible for the murder of his girlfriend in 2011 has concluded.

Mark Lindsay, 29, was charged in 2011 after the body of his then girlfriend, Dana Turner, 31, was found in a ditch near Innisfail.

Lindsay, who is the adopted son of a former Edmonton police chief, has admitted to murdering Turner by stabbing her in the eyes with a pencil, strangling her and running over her with a vehicle, but the trial was held to determine whether or not he is criminally responsible for Turner’s death.

A judge will now review the case to make that determination. The verdict will be read on May 13th.

Last Friday, closing arguments took place in Red Deer’s Court of Queen’s Bench.

Defense Lawyer Kent Teskey said Lindsay was mentally ill at the time of the offense.

“Mr. Lindsay was profoundly ill in 2011 when the index offense took place,” he said, adding that records show that Lindsay has suffered from mental illness since 2005. “Mr. Lindsay has a disease of the mind which is schizophrenia and that was not contradicted (throughout the trial). He said even though Lindsay has admitted to substance abuse, Lindsay would not continue to show any signs of psychosis if it was substance induced like the crown has alleged during the trial.

Defense Lawyer Curtis Steeves added Lindsay believed that Turner was a supernatural woman. “He was scared of this supernatural woman that he was about to kill.”

Teskey added Lindsay’s ‘delusional system’ got completely out of control as he continued to believe there were healers and assassins and he was going to be killed imminently.

“There was this obsessive aspect of his life and it had taken over his life in 2011.

He thought Dana was going to kill him and as delusional as it was, there was some authenticity to it,” he added. “There was a gradual build up of paranoia and he was tormented by these delusional thoughts.

He believed Dana was a supernatural threat.”

Lindsay, who was dressed in a white button down dress shirt for the majority of the trial, began to cry in the prisoner’s box as Teskey gave details about his delusions.

Meanwhile, Crown Prosecutor Bina Border said there was unreliability in the evidence presented during the trial. “(Mr. Lindsay) was not suffering from mental illness to warrant NCR (not criminally responsible),” she said. “He was not in a psychotic state at the time of the offenses. Mr. Lindsay knew his acts were morally wrong.”

Crown Prosecutor Ed Ring added there is, “Abundant evidence to support Mark Lindsay was aware of his actions (at the time of the offense). He expressed no fear of Ms. Turner before he stabbed her and videos leading up to the offense show Mark Lindsay to be acting normal in demeanour.”

POLICE BRIEFS RED DEER MAN CHARGED WITH MURDER Investigators from the RCMP’s Edmonton Major Crimes Unit have arrested and charged four people after a sevenmonth-long investigation into the murder of a 22-year-old Camrose woman whose remains were discovered by a local resident in a wooded area within the Town of Calmar, Alberta after she had been reported missing on Aug. 1st, 2015.

Mackenzie Leah Harris had been reported missing by a friend last August. Police launched a search for the missing woman which culminated in the discovery of Harris’ remains in Calmar on Aug. 3. An autopsy by the Edmonton Medical Examiner’s Office determined that the manner of Harris’ death was a homicide. Police moved on the evidence which they gathered during the course of their investigation and made the arrests last week in connection to the murder of Harris.

Charged with second degree murder in the death of Harris is 29-year-old Kyle Scott of Leduc,

21-year-old Dylan Bakke of Red Deer and 39-year-old Christopher Stein of Millet. Bakke is also charged with committing an indignity to a dead body.

A fourth person was arrested and charged with second degree murder and committing an indignity to a dead body, however, because the individual was a youth at the time of the offence, they cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. In addition, Scott has been charged with attempted murder stemming from an unrelated matter in 2014.

SUSPECTS SOUGHT AFTER TRESPASSING On March 2nd at 5:50 p.m. a vehicle was on a section of land situated on RR 283 north of Hwy. 11A, in the County of Red Deer. The vehicle was approached by the complainant, who spoke with the two male occupants briefly and determined they did not have permission to be on the land, therefore, he contacted the police.

The vehicle then drove into the complainants vehicle and fled

The vehicle is described as a white Dodge Ram pickup with an extended cab and grey slip tank. The first suspect (driver) is described as a Caucasian male, about 20-years-old, tall and lean with a scruffy beard and dark hair.

The second suspect (passenger) is described as a Caucasian male, about 16-years-old, 5’2” with a scruffy beard, dark hair, brown eyes and was wearing white t-shirt and jeans.

The suspects also had a pit bull or boxer type dog with them, that was white and tan in colour.

JONATHAN ALFRED ANDREWS Jonathan Alfred Andrews, 23, of Bentley is wanted by the RCMP for his involvement in at least five separate investigations in Rimbey and Sylvan Lake. The list of charges that he is currently wanted on totals 20 charges and includes possession of stolen property, flight from police, dangerous driving, obstructing a peace officer, possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, unauthorized possession of a weapon and numerous traffic related offences.

ATTEMPTED MURDER SUSPECT SOUGHT Blackfalds RCMP request the public’s assistance in identifying a male suspect involved in the attempt murder which occurred on Feb. 25th at 5 a.m.

It is also requested the person who placed an Alberta license plate at the front door of Innisfail Detachment on the evening of Feb. 28th contact Blackfalds RCMP.

SUSPECT On Feb. 25th at 5:20 a.m., Blackfalds RCMP responded to a rural residence in Red Deer County to a victim who had been seriously injured. The victim was assaulted by an unknown suspect, who then fled the scene in the victim’s vehicle.

The victim was transported to the hospital where he is being treated for his serious injuries.

The victim’s vehicle has recently been located and recovered by the police.

POSSIBLE RESOLUTION IN ARENS CASE A possible resolution is in the works for a man who had his convictions which included impaired driving causing death overturned by the Alberta Court of Appeal.

Rodney Arens appeared in Red Deer’s Court of Queen’s Bench on Monday via CCTV where his lawyer, Donna Derie-Gillespie, asked for the matter to go over to the next arraignment date as a possible resolution would be brought forward at that time.

After last month’s decision by the Alberta Court of Appeal which ruled that Arens will get a new trial, he was granted bail.

However, as of Monday, he remained in custody.

Justice Kirk Sisson sentenced Arens to five years and six months in prison in June 2014. He was given credit for 185 days for time served before and during the trial. His sentence also included a driving prohibition for 10 years.

Arens was found guilty of impaired driving causing death, impaired driving causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing death, dangerous driving causing bodily harm and breach of recognizance.

Those convictions were overturned last month in the Alberta Court of Appeal.

Arens will return to the Court of Queen’s Bench in Red Deer on April 4th.

PRELIMINARY HEARING BEGINS A preliminary hearing for two men accused of murdering a Castor-area family began in Red Deer court on Monday.

Jason Gordon Klaus has been charged with three counts of first degree murder and one count of arson in relation to the deaths of his father Gordon Klaus, 61, his mother Sandra Klaus, 62 and his sister Monica Klaus, 40, in December 2013.

Joshua Gregory Frank has also been charged with three counts of first degree murder in relation to the deaths as well as one count of arson and one count of injuring or endangering an animal in relation to the shooting death of the family dog.

The remains of Gordon and Monica were found in what was left of a burnt-out house in Castor on Dec. 8th, 2013. The body of Sandra has never been found and during a press conference in Calgary in 2014, RCMP Insp. Tony Hamori, operations officer for the Calgary RCMP Major Crimes Unit, said police believe her remains were consumed by the fire.

Hamori added Jason was arrested in August 2014 at Monica’s residence in Stettler while Frank was arrested at his brother’s residence in Castor.

He said the arrests were made after a “Key piece of evidence” was found by an RCMP dive team from B.C. in Big Knife Provincial Park during a dive on July 26th and July 27th, 2014. He said that evidence played a major role in laying the charges against the two suspects.

On June 3rd, 2013, at 10 p.m., Sylvan Lake RCMP were called to a residence outside of Sylvan Lake for an offense involving firearms. Upon police attendance, it was learned that a man and a woman attended the residence and demanded money and jewelry from the victim and his spouse.

The assailant was carrying a firearm, and at one time, allegedly fired the weapon at the male victim. The weapon did not discharge and no other attempts were made to discharge it again.

On June 9th, 2013, at 7 p.m. Red Deer City RCMP responded to a complaint of a robbery with a firearm where the suspect stole a vehicle from the victim. At 11 p.m. RCMP located the stolen vehicle in the Creekside Trailer Park. RCMP initiated a traffic stop, however, the vehicle fled from police. The suspect vehicle was located abandoned near Olds where a black Dodge truck

was reported stolen. As RCMP attempted a traffic stop with the stolen truck another pursuit ensued. A police spike belt was utilized. Waunch fled from the vehicle and attempted to run on foot from police. He was caught and arrested.

Waunch has been charged with attempted murder, robbery with a firearm, theft over $5,000, use of a firearm while fleeing from police, kidnapping, use of a firearm while committing an indictable offence, possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, discharging a firearm to prevent arrest, discharge of a restricted firearm while being reckless and being an occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm in the motor vehicle.

He also faces two counts of flight from police and two counts of dangerous driving.

His trial date will begin April 18th, 2017.

Composting at Home program registration opens Thursday With spring just around the corner, the City is seeking 200 households to dig in to the Composting at Home program and start composting in their own backyards. Participants receive a free compost bin, kitchen catcher and training on how to compost in return for their commitment to compost for one year.

More than 800 households have signed up for the program since it launched in 2012, and have helped to dispel some of the common misconceptions about composting.

“We’ve heard it all – it smells, it’s too hard to manage, just not enough time – but the reality for our participants is very positive,” said Lauren Maris, environmental program specialist.

“They’re putting out less trash each week, it only takes about 15 minutes a week to maintain, and when you know how to compost properly, smells and

pests aren’t a problem.”

The composting program aims to divert organic waste from the City’s Waste Management Facility. Organic waste, which includes food scraps and yard waste, is one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions.

Composting these materials instead helps to improve growth in yards and gardens, and reduce the amount of water and chemical fertilizers needed.

“This program is all about setting our residents up for success in managing their waste,” said Maris. “We provide the tools, the resources and the training to help you along the way. All we ask is that you commit to giving it a try.”

Composting at home goes hand in hand with the City’s Green Cart pilot program, which may go City-wide in 2017. Any organic materials not appropriate for backyard composting, such as pet waste, meat scraps

and dairy products, would instead go in the Green Cart for curbside pickup.

AFTERMATH - At approximately 10:20 p.m. on March 2nd, Red Deer County Fire Services responded to a house fire east of Red Deer near the River Bend Golf Course. The multi-million dollar home was engulfed in flames, with crews still on scene Thursday morning attending to hot spots. There were no reports of injuries.

Investigation continues into the cause of the fire.

his past weekend marked the 37th Annual Red Deer Home Show at the Westerner Park. We wanted to thank everyone who supported the show & stopped by our booth to say hello.

Our concept for the show this year was ‘High or Low’; we borrowed this idea from the pages of Canada’s Style at Home magazine. Our booth was divided in half & we showed how it is possible to replicate a high end design in a more budget conscious fashion. We had a blast getting show-goers to guess which side was high & which side was low- our findings were that about 90% of the people guessed that our budget conscious side was the ‘high end’ side. We understand that budget is a word that is at the forefront of many customers’ mindsand we want to reassure that just because you are working within a budget, doesn’t mean you can’t achieve the look you are envisioning.

The Red Deer College Psychology Society will again be hosting the second annual Interdisciplinary Symposium Conversation on Mind on March 11th. Four speakers — Dr. Jamie Prowse-Turner, Dr. Anomi Bearden, Dr. Randy Johnson, and Dr. Daniel Haas — will discuss the important topic of morality, and where it comes from. Each speaker will give a 10-minute presentation on the topic, then their fellow panelists will question them on their position. Once all four speakers have presented and defended their positions, the audience will be encouraged to ask questions. Week of March 9 - 16, 2016 The Red Deer College Psychology Society is hosting the second annual Interdisciplinary Symposium Conversation on Mind March 11th. Community - The Power of One co-hosted by the Central Alberta Refugee Effort (C.A.R.E.) runs March 19th at the Radisson Hotel in Red Deer. Commemorate the UN International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discriminiation by taking in key note speakers, a panel discussion and workshops. Speakers include Danika Littlechild and Darren Lund and the panel discussion will be led by Morris Flewwelling.

Sessions will focus on various topics including understanding the truth and reconciliation process, dispelling myths about refugees, working through internal bias, acquiring tools to respond to racial discrimination, and ending discrimination in the workplace. CMHA Art of Friendship Course - the Art of Friendship is an eight-week course designed to help people who feel lonely or isolated learn and practice the

skills that help people make and keep friends. The March course meets weekly beginning March 16th from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. and runs through June 16th. The course takes place at the Canadian Mental Health Association office at 5017 5oth Ave. Art of Friendship is particularly helpful to people who have lost friends because difficult experiences or disability have affected their

confidence level and self-esteem.

Family WRAP™ (Wellness Recovery Action Planning) is an eight-week course designed to identify what families need for everyday wellness and is hosted by the Canadian Mental Health Association.

Participants will create a WRAP™ plan for themselves as individuals and for the family unit. When we think of family, we may think of the traditional family – Mom, dad and children who live, work and play together, however, family is a much broader concept. In WRAP classes, family is a group of two or more people who want to be together in a relationship that supports growth, happiness and wellness. The March course meets for eight Thursday Evenings from 5:30 to 8 p.m. beginning March

3rd. The final class is on April 21st. Family WRAP™ meets at the Timberlands Branch of Red Deer Public Library located at 300 Timothy Dr. Teenagers may attend WRAP for Families with an adult participant. New musical After HYMN! to benefit pregnancy care centre

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS The Central Alberta Pregnancy Care Centre is presenting the second annual dramatic musical production of After HYMN! The fundraising production is written by Andrew Kooman and directed

by Annette Bradley and Laura Geelen.

Performances run March 11th at 7 p.m. as well as March 12th at 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. at CrossRoads Church.

Funds will support the Centre’s Maternity Home as phase two of its development unfolds which includes a three-storey building, which will be connected to phase one of the project. A freewill offering is taken at the end of each performance.

The Maternity Home Program’s phase one offers a facility with four bedrooms with private bathrooms.

The home also includes a communal kitchen, living area and house parents quarters.

Meanwhile, the production of After HYMN! focuses on a fellow by the name of Martin Pewbury, a teenager who dreams of being a rock star.

“His life is disrupted when he’s dragged by his father to the estate of his great Aunt Anna in order to receive an unexpected inheritance.

“When Martin meets the elusive Mr. Watts, his prayers to be a famous rock star take him on a musical journey that’s so much more than he bargained for.”

Bradley, who is overseeing production duties and serving as musical director, said more than 70 people are involved in the production representing about 25

churches and community organizations throughout Central Alberta.

“There’s humour in it and it tugs at your heart strings,” explained Bradley. “This is a show that anyone of any age can enjoy the history of our hymns is so rich.”

The production features six actors, a five-piece band and 70 singers in the choir. It’s also ideal for families with kids in that it’s only an hour and 15 minutes in length. “I think it would be so good for people to bring their teenagers and children as well.”

Planning unfolds for months before the actual rehearsal process kicks in. “It’s been very rewarding.”

Last year, the Centre presented That Towering Cross, also written by Kooman with Bradley and Geelen in the director roles as well. It proved to be immensely popular and raised $90,000.

Bradley said it’s also very rewarding to see how a community is built up through the process of bringing the production together. Many also returned from last year’s production to be a part of After HYMN! as well.

For Bradley, it’s the perfect project to delve into.

“I love theatre, I love ‘live’ music and I love musicals, plus we are honouring the Lord with what we are doing.”

Meanwhile, for 26 years, the Central Alberta Pregnancy Care Centre has offered support and education to individuals and families impacted by unplanned pregnancy.

According to their web site, they provide education, counselling and practical assistance.

Programs and services include prenatal education, parenting programs, adoption support, male mentorship and programs to learn about healthy relationships.

Staff at the Centre are enjoying the partnership with Kooman, who has been recognized as a gifted writer and filmmaker in his own right.

Anne Waddell, executive director of the Centre, said they have entered into a partnership with Kooman for an annual

fundraiser that is built around a production. This year’s show marks the second year in that partnership.

“We are thankful for the community support.”

A local history of the Hebrideans - part two On Tuesday, May 8th, 1923, more than 200 immigrants from the West Hebrides of Scotland arrived at the C.P.R. and C.N.R. railway stations in Red Deer.

An estimated 2,000 local residents turned out to greet them, almost the entire population of the City at the time.

The Hebrideans were part of large resettlement program, sponsored by the Scottish Immigrant Aid Society.

The people of the West Hebrides were suffering from the deep economic depression that followed the First World War. The S.I.A.S. offered the chance of better lives in the agricultural heartlands of Central Alberta and northeastern Alberta.

M o r e ov e r, the Hebrideans were considered to be the ‘right’ kind of settlers. The speeches at their official welcome to Red Deer referred to the predominately Roman Catholic immigrants as a, “Class of people that keep their Sabbath.”

However, language was a problem as most spoke Gaelic, not English.

Also, most had been fishermen and had little or no experience with farming.

As soon as the Hebrideans arrived, they were taken to the old Red Deer Indian Industrial School west of the City.

Once there, they were provided with food and ac-

DAWE commodations as well as instruction in farming and English. As soon as they were deemed ready, the new settlers were moved to farms either west of Red Deer, or in the Westlock and Vermillion areas.

However, grumblings soon began to emerge.

Rumours circulated that the new immigrants were given special favours, such as an exemption from taxation. Others claimed that Soldiers Settlement Board, who provided many of the prospective farms, was displacing needy veterans for the Hebrideans.

On the other hand, stories of unhappy settlers also began to circulate.

For some, the new strange life proved to be overwhelming.

In several cases, the promised assistance in terms of loans, agricultural equipment and small houses on the new farms failed to materialize.

In quite a few instances, the land provided by the S.S.B. were locations already abandoned by veterans as being almost impossible to farm.

EARLY SETTLEMENT - Crowds gathered at the CNR station on 47 Ave., north of Ross Street, in Red Deer, to greet the Red Deer Archives P6966 arrival of new immigrants from the Gaelic parts of the West Hebrides of Scotland - May 8th, 1923. the Scottish Immigrant Aid Society, tried to secure new resources to help with the Hebrideans’ settlement.

A contract was given to Hugh Baird, formerly with the local contracting firm of Baird and MacKenzie, to construct small cottages as housing for the families.

Contact was made with local farmers to see if they would help give the Hebrideans some experience. The hope was also that if things worked out well, the new settlers might be offered jobs as farm labourers, instead of being expected to start farms of their own.

Unfortunately, problems grew worse.

Father MacDonell accused the provincial Minister of Agriculture, George Hoadley, of being hostile to the project because he wanted the settlers to be located near the new community by Rimbey that had been named in his honour.

Whatever the reason, the provincial government provided very little help.

In August of 1924, another large group of Hebrideans arrived in Red Deer.

However, this time, there was no welcoming ceremonies although the Board of Trade provided rides out

to the old Indian School.

The local enthusiasm for the settlement plans had ebbed.

Many of the newest settlers were placed on farms near Clandonald in northeastern Alberta.

Again, promised funds, equipment and housing were often lacking. Most Hebrideans suffered a tough winter.

A few settlers returned to the Hebrides.

Most moved to places like Calgary and Edmonton to find jobs. Several went to the B.C. coast where they were able to secure employment in the fishery.

Father MacDonell continued to try and bring

out more settlers, not only from the Hebrides, but also from the Catholic communities in Northern Ireland.

Many of the latter group were settled at St. Brides, Alberta, next to the Saddle Lake First Nations reserve.

Unfortunately, severe hardships continued.

While the grand settlement proposal had met with a lot of failure, Alberta still benefited from an influx of new immigrants who eventually established new and better lives even if it was not on farms.

Many distinguished Albertans today can trace their roots to the Hebrideans who came to Red Deer in 1923 and 1924.

CITY BRIEFS RDC SHOWCASES SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS Support for students is paramount at Red Deer College.

The College’s newest student recruitment marketing campaign highlights the many ways that RDC instructors and staff support students throughout their academic journeys.

We have tremendous supports in place to help students, first as they make the decision to attend RDC and then continuing on throughout their studies,” says Dr. Paulette Hanna, vice president academic.

FCSS PROGRAMS RECEIVE PROVINCIAL FUNDING Programs to help children and youth build positive relationships to deal with challeng-

es are among the initiatives approved by the Red Deer & District Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) Board to receive additional funding from the Province.

The FCSS Board approved recommendations for 20 programs to receive approximately $1.6 million in additional funding for 2016-17.

The Province announced in October 2015 it would increase FCSS funding by $25 million across Alberta. As a result, the Red Deer & District FCSS Board issued a Request for Proposals in January, inviting applicants to submit proposals for new early prevention programs that were either planned and ready to go; an expansion of an existing project; or a one-time project or innovation to better serve clients.

“There are many deserving programs and services for individuals and families throughout our region focused on improving social well-being, and we are thrilled that this funding makes more of them possible,” said Kathy Sitter, Red Deer & District FCSS board chair. “We are very thankful the provincial government has acknowledged the great need for these services, and has invested accordingly.”

As part of the same funding process, approximately $400,000 was earmarked in December to launch a regional neighbourhood initiative designed to help increase connection between people where they live. This place-based pilot project aims to support people to meet their neighbours and build relationships to enhance quality of life.

“This program will focus on strengthening the connections between people where they live,” said Scott Cameron, City of Red Deer Social Planning manager. “It’s programs such as these – whether they’re helping build resilience, mitigating poverty, or increasing social cohesion – that contribute to the social well-being of all communities.”

The Red Deer & District FCSS mandate is to provide preventive social programming that enhances the social well-being of individuals and families through promotion or intervention strategies provided at the earliest opportunity.

Mosaics of Hope fundraiser underway at Parkland Mall

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Local residents are invited to experience a new way to give back with the Mosaics of Hope fundraiser, running through March 20th at Parkland Mall.

Previously known as ‘Shades of Ambition’, this event provides a unique opportunity for charitable organizations in Central Alberta to raise funds for their programs, organizers say. This year marks the sixth year for the fundraising event, said Marketing Director Melody McKnight.

The participating charities this year are The Red Deer SPCA, Red Deer Regional Health Foundation, and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Red Deer and District.

Participating charitable organizations each begin with a black and white mural, which will be on display in the mall for three weeks. Members of the public can then purchase a tile from any of the participating organizations for a $5 donation.

Each group has 750 tiles to sell during the three-week period.

“It’s an exciting opportunity for the mall to give back,” said McKnight. “For every tile sold during the event, Parkland Mall has committed to matching those donations. That means each charitable organization has the opportunity to receive up to $7,500 when the event wraps up on March 20th. And for a lot of these groups, that’s a significant amount of money for them to assist their programs and make some positive changes in our community.”

McKnight said that a couple of key changes were made last year.

“First, we changed the name to better reflect what the event is about,” she said.

It was also getting harder for some of the smaller non-profit organizations to participate because they couldn’t always provide enough volunteers to cover the entire three-week stretch of the campaign.

“So we changed it to where there is just one week of volunteers from each organization. Even though you can purchase tiles for any organization at any time, they each have a week where they

are featured on the radio ads and they provide the volunteers for that week and promote themselves for that specific week as well. It’s then a lot easier for them to participate.”

For example, this week the Red Deer Regional Health Foundation is being promoted, but if someone wants to buy a tile for the SPCA, that’s not a problem and the Foundation volunteers can take care

of that particular request.

Some folks opt to buy a tile for all the organizations, said McKnight, adding said there were 10 organizations that applied to be part of the fundraiser.

Mosaics of Hope is also a great way to bolster awareness about the various organizations taking part, she said. Folks often stop by the murals and chat with the volunteers about the causes they are representing.

“From my days at a non-profit, I found that matching funds was always the way to go. For example, anytime the government matches funds for something, people step up and donate - it really resonates with people.

We thought we would try that and it was successful - every group last year sold out their mural. We are hoping for the same this year.”

Meanwhile, Parkland Mall will hand out cheques at their Mosaic Reveal Event on March 20th, where each participating charity will get to showcase their final mosaic and be presented with a donation from Parkland Mall equivalent to the number of tiles that were sold.

Littlechild was named vice-president of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO (CCU) in 2014.

She’a a lawyer from the Ermineskin Cree Nation, and practices law with Indigenous peoples in several areas of expertise - governance, indigenous legal systems, environment and international law.

ENTERTAINMENT Alberta’s own Jann Arden to play Red Deer this month

BY ERIN FAWCETT RED DEER EXPRESS Alberta’s own Jann Arden will be making a Red Deer stop on her current tour later this month.

She plays the Memorial Centre on March 25th.

“It’s a lot of music and it’s very conversational - the set is very different and the way we are approaching the songs - we bring a lot of them down and we talk a lot about the song writing - it is really funny as well,” she said about the show.

Arden is a Canadian born singer, songwriter, broadcaster and author. The much celebrated multi-platinum, award-winning artist catapulted onto the Canadian music scene in 1993 with the release of her debut album featuring the hit single, . A year later with , she would have her career breakout hit that would solidify her position in the music world.

Arden has released 12 albums with 19 Top 10 singles. Her most recent recording, was released in 2014. With Grammy Award winning producer Bob Rock behind the console, the 11-track disc is considered to be amongst Arden’s finest work – progressive, yet retaining the magic that is distinctly Jann. In her career to date she has received eight Juno Awards including Female Artist of the Year and Songwriter of the Year and in 1997 she hosted the awards ceremony. Arden has again been nominated for a Juno this year for Adult Contemporary Album Of The Year for .

The awards show takes place in Calgary April 3rd.

“My music is about personal consumption and about a personal experience. It’s about someone spending time in the car driving or sitting in their house having coffee or locked in their bedroom because they are inconsolable otherwise and putting me on repeat,” said Arden. “That to me has been a real triumph within my career - I certainly didn’t expect to be that - I didn’t know what I would be.

“I love music - I think it’s the common denominator with all of humanity. We all have a story and we all have a soundtrack to our lives. We all have songs that uncover memories whether they are good, bad or indifferent or about old relationships, losing a loved one, a happy time or a first concert,” she added. “Music really unifies - it rarely divides people.”

Music was a part of Arden’s life early on when she lived in a rural part of southern Alberta.

“When we grew up out here we went to a really small school - there was only 40 kids. My mom tried to drive as around as much as she could to all these sports things. I joined up for hockey because there wasn’t a lot of options out there and she went and took guitar lessons - I guess I was about 11-years-old - it coincided with the same time the hockey practice was on,” said Arden. “She dragged home this giant Yamaha guitar and I just became fascinated with it. It was far too big for me to even get under my arm.

I couldn’t even get my arm over the side of the guitar - that is how little I was. I just learned where to put my fingers on the little dots and the chart they showed you - I never learned how to read music.

“Really within a few months after learning a few chords, I started writing.

I never looked back. It’s almost like when you discover something very secret - I

felt like I was part of a secret society.”

As for inspiration for new material, Arden takes it from all aspects of life.

People ask me if I write words or music first and usually I do them simultaneously,” she said. “It’s almost liking tuning an old AM radio and you’re slowly turning the dial to find the station and you go by the station and you are trying to find that sweet spot where you’re hearing it as clearly as you can - for me songwriting is like that.”

As for hitting the tour, Arden said she is excited to hit the road and there is more touring to come later in the year as she will one again head out for a Christmas tour.

Hunting Hills presents Big - The Musical

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Hunting Hills students are ready to present their latest theatrical production Big - the Musical to local audiences with performances starting March 11th at the Memorial Centre.

The show - which is based on the popular Tom Hanks movie of the same name that hit the silver screen back in 1988 - includes a number of catchy tunes as well, and promises to be an engaging and thoroughly entertaining program for the entire family, said director Bill Jacobsen.

The film is focused on a boy by the name of Josh Baskin who makes a wish to be big, and then ages to adulthood overnight.

“WE FELT IT WAS TIME TO DO SOMETHING THAT WAS A LITTLE LESS MATURE SOMETHING THAT HEARKENS BACK TO MORE OF A FAMILY SHOW.”

“The music is incredibly fun - it’s very infectious and very catchy. And it’s a very modern sounding musical with some great dance numbers in it.”

After the successful run of the film in the late 1980s, the story was transformed into a stage musical in 1996.

Directed by Mike Ockrent, and choreographed by Susan Stroman, it opened on April 28th, 1996 and closed on Oct. 13th, 1996, after 193 performances. It was also later shaped into a national tour production, which Jacobsen noted ended up being a remarkable success. “That’s the version we are using - the one that was done on the national tour.

“It’s a little tighter and a bit faster moving than the original one on Broadway,” he said. “The show has such great energy, so I think people will walk away with a great, positive feeling after seeing it.”

Meanwhile, 70 students are involved with the production at Hunting Hills.

Jacobsen finds his role of guiding the students along

through a show’s development an extremely fulfilling one. He also enjoys the collaborative nature of building a production from the ground up, adding that organization from the get-go is key to having everything come together as opening night approaches.

“I think it comes together at the end if you do the work at the start.”

Meanwhile, performances continue through March 19th. Curtain is 7 p.m.

“You don’t need to have seen the film to enjoy the musical, and when’s the next time you are going to see some people dance on a 16-foot floor piano?”

Tickets are $15 for students, children and seniors and $20 for adults. There are also dinner theatre shows on March 11th-12th. March 17th is ‘cheap night’ when tickets are $12.

One of the most memorable scenes in the film is when Hanks and co-star Robert Loggia dance on a foot-operated electronic floor keyboard in a department store, and Jacobsen said that’s an enduring scene that many folks recall, even if they don’t remember what movie they saw it in.

“That’s the scene that everybody remembers.”

Jacobsen said it seemed a good time to take on something of a more fun, light-hearted nature after the last few productions the school has presented, some of which have been a bit on the more intense side.

“We felt it was time to do something that was a little less mature - something that hearkens back to more of a family show,” he explained. That said, Jacobsen pointed out that he and the cast and crew have also ensured the major themes of Big do indeed shine through as well.

“That growing up isn’t all the freedom and the joy that sometimes kids think it is,” he said. “There are negatives, and of course responsibilities that go along with it.

“It’s also a really strong story about family love.”

Of course, the music is a powerful part of the show.

The relationship between the recession and fitness Yup, we are pretty much all feeling it big time! The current economic and political times are really tough and nobody really knows how long this will last or whether it is going to get better or worse anytime soon. I don’t know about you, but I am not a fan of complaining about things I cannot change (like the government or the price of oil). What I do believe in is finding what I can do about things I cannot change. The number one thing we can always control is our attitude and fitness can help in more ways than you might think! It doesn’t have to be bootcamp or a massive workout or running a marathon either; a walk after supper, or dancing or skating all work!

It has been said that fitness is the single most under used anti-depressant there is and I know that for a fact. I have seen it and lived it. As most of you heard, I was in a crash recently and nearly died. As soon as my doctors allowed me I quit pain killers and started running again with my broken arm/shoulder in a Velcro sling. I knew that it would fend off depression, move through toxins from all the surgeries and help me heal. It has. Faster than any doctors predicted. But you don’t have to crash to get these benefits. Check out the things a little fitness can do: 1. Reduce stress. Rough day? Take a walk or head to the gym for a quick workout. Exercise is the number one way to deal with stress because it moves through all the bad toxins from stress and also increases concentrations of nor epinephrine, a chemical that can moderate the brain’s response to stress.

2. Increase good brain chemicals.

What if by getting a little more fit, you inspired someone to try it too and then they get all seven of the benefits above? What if we all did this?

So maybe fitness won’t solve the recession, but if we were all a little more fit, less stressed, more relaxed, confident, productive and positive - well that just has to help.

How does my diet compare with the Mayo Clinic’s? ‘What diet do you follow?’ is a question I’m often asked when writing about cardiovascular disease. So I was interested to read a report from The Mayo Clinic recommending ways to have a hearthealthy diet. How did mine stack up?

Sometimes I threaten the waiter!

I couldn’t agree more with Mayo’s. For years I’ve stressed that calories do count and the larger the portion on the plate the greater the number of calories.

But our eyes are often larger than our stomachs and we ignore portion size.

Moreover, in some restaurants the only way to obtain a small portion is to threaten the waiter!

Remember, you can have the most nutritious heart healthy meal available on the plate, but if it’s a large portion you still get a ton of calories which means weight gain, increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

And people with diabetes have a 50% chance of dying from heart attack.

Not exactly a heart healthy diet.

To avoid this error, use a small plate and learn more about serving size.

For instance, one serving size of pasta is one-half a cup about the size of a hockey puck. A serving of three ounces of meat or chicken is the size and thickness of a pack of cards. Serving size is as vital as the size of the plate.

Consume more fruits and vegetables.

JONES This is always a sound move as they’re a good source of minerals and vitamins. They’re low in calories and rich in dietary fiber. The average North American eats 15 grams of fiber daily but it should be 35 grams.

Fiber has ‘filling volume’, which means it fills the stomach and sends a message to the brain to stop eating.

Eat one apple full of fiber and you rarely need a second one. A can of soda has little filling volume.

In addition to being heart healthy, fiber is a prime way to fight obesity. It also makes stools soft as toothpaste and fights constipation.

Increase the consumption of whole grain.

Whole grains are also a great source of fiber and according to The Mayo Clinic they also help to regulate blood pressure. So choose whole wheat flour, 100% whole wheat bread, whole wheat pasta, a high fiber cereal that contains at least 10 grams of fiber.

I start every morning with a bowl full of Fiber One or Fiber First along with a banana or some other fruit to make fiber more palatable.

Limit unhealthy fats. Use olive and canola oil along with the polyunsaturated fats found in fish, nuts and

seeds. Mayo experts also suggest margarine. I hate to disagree, as they may be right, but I use butter.

Why? I trust the farmers more than I trust manufactured foods.

Choose low fat protein sources.

This means lean meat, fish, poultry, low fat dairy products and eggs which are prime sources of protein. So I also use skim milk and eat skinless chicken breasts. And don’t

forget that omega three fats in fish such as salmon, mackerel and herring are heart- healthy.

Decrease sodium intake.

The Mayo Clinic states that increased amounts of sodium are related to high blood pressure which is not health friendly. It recommends that adults should not have more than 2,300 milligrams daily.

Have an occasional treat.

I too follow this advice. I like French fries, ice cream

and cookies. But like Mayo, I only do it now and then.

Any problem with Mayo’s advice? The Mayo clinic makes no mention that to have a heart-healthy diet you need high doses of Vitamin C and lysine.

This combination in powder or pill form prevents and reverses hardening of arteries, a major cause of heart attack. You can see photos on my web site which show the dramatic changes in arteries after

It is tragic that the medical establishment is ignoring this research which could save thousands of lives. History shows it’s not the first time this has happened.

‘Igloos for Insulin’ fundraiser coming up

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS The Canadian Diabetes Association invites you to gather your tools and Canadian spirit to participate in Igloos for Insulin on March 18th at 2 p.m. in the Parkland Mall parking lot.

Each team of up to 10 must contribute $500 to enter and any additional funds provided earns the team extra snow to construct their igloo for a chance to win some great prizes. “This is the first time we’ve done this event,� said Shalene Hughes of the Canadian Diabetes Association.

She said that proceeds raised at the event will support research and funding for education programs and sending kids with Type 1 diabetes to camp. Besides being a fun time, these camps also provide children with instruction on learning to live with diabetes.

According to the Association, diabetes is a chronic, often debilitating and sometimes fatal disease, in which the body either cannot produce insulin or cannot properly use the insulin it produces.

Insulin is a hormone that controls the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood. Diabetes leads to high blood sugar levels, which can damage organs, blood vessels and nerves. The body needs insulin to use sugar as an energy source.

Type 1 diabetes occurs when the immune system

mistakenly attacks and kills the beta cells of the pancreas. No, or very little, insulin is released into the body.

About five to 10% of people with diabetes have Type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes generally develops in childhood or adolescence, but can develop in adulthood.

Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body can’t properly use the insulin that is released (called insulin insensitivity) or does not make enough insulin.

As a result, sugar builds up in the blood instead of being used as energy. About 90% of people with diabetes have Type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes more often develops in adults, but children can be affected.

Also according to the Canadian Diabetic Association, signs and symptoms can include unusual thirst, frequent urination, weight change (gain or loss), extreme fatigue or lack of energy, blurred vision, frequent or recurring infections, cuts and bruises that are slow to heal and tingling or numbness in the hands or feet.

Hughes also mentioned that the Diabetes Clothesline Truck will also be on location at Igloos for Insulin to accept clothing and small household item donations.

Other fundraising events through the year include a door to door campaign and the annual Lace Up with Team Diabetes which runs in September.

Red Deer Fencing Club dominates tourney

BY ZACHARY CORMIER RED DEER EXPRESS It was a productive week for the Red Deer Fencing Club (RDFC), which hosted their annual Red Deer Open tournament at Grandview Elementary School in Red Deer last weekend.

RDFC had an excellent showing over the two day long event.

“In this competition we got 12 medals in total,” said Petar Toshkov, the head coach of the RDFC. “Our Club has probably been one of the best clubs in the last seven years in Western Canada and definitely in Alberta in epee. Because there are some clubs that have foil and sabre as well, but in epee we dominate definitely.”

The Red Deer Fencing Club was started in 1995 and grew out of the Alberta Modern Pentathlon Association, who promoted the sport as one of the events in their pentathlon.

“It actually started as a pentathlon club, and then it became a fencing club. It used to be sabre and foil as well but now we just do epee, we just focus on one weapon,” said Toshkov, referring to the three weapons that are used in modern fencing.

Epee is the oldest of the three weapons and the only one that the RDFC uses. Epee fencing was one of only seven sports that were included in the first Olympic Games.

“There are two more Olympic weapons, which are foil and sabre, but they were introduced a little bit later, like in the 1920s, 1930s at the Olympics,” Toshkov said.

While Red Deer Fencing Club isn’t quite that old, Toshkov said they have still seen their share of successes over the years.

“We had a few kids that were on the national team, we had lots of national medals, Western Championship medals and lots of provincial medals, like we were dominating the province in the last five or six years.”

With just two months remaining in the RDFC’s competitive season, Toshkov said that Red Deer’s representatives have been hard at work getting ready for the provincial meet, which takes place in Blackfalds at the end of April.

“We do our regular training. So we meet four to five days at the Club and most of the weekends we have competitions here in Alberta.”

There are six circuit events that take place in Alberta every year that count towards the national standings.

Although RDFC has had students qualify in the top five nationally in the past, including a few who ranked number one, there are no Red Deerians on that list this year.

Part of the reason, Toshkov said, is Alberta’s economy, which has limited the Club’s ability to travel to different events around the country.

“We travel quite a lot. We find that lately, since the economy’s getting pretty bad, lots of parents don’t have the money

to afford to send their kids because travelling in Canada is quite expensive,” he said, adding because of those limitations the Club hasn’t been able to compete as much.

“Last year we had a couple of kids that were top three. Right now we don’t because they don’t compete as much because of the financial things. But they’re still doing pretty good.”

After the provincial championships, the Club’s focus will shift to the Western Championships in Saskatoon in mid-May before finally wrapping up the season at the end of May with nationals in Quebec.

“Then after that there are no more competitions. We take just the summer off.”

Toshkov added that the club is always looking for new members for next season.

“Fencing is a lot different from other sports. Fencing develops a lot of abilities, that’s why it takes a long time to learn.

It’s quite complicated. It teaches a lot of discipline, a lot of strategy, you have to be quick,” he said.

Local swimmers shine at Calgary meet

BY ZACHARY CORMIER RED DEER EXPRESS The Red Deer Catalina Swim Club’s U15 Age Group swimmers were dominant at the 2016 Speedo Alberta Age Group Championships in Calgary last weekend as they brought home the Swim Alberta Medium Team Points Award banner among a number of individual awards.

“This meet is always really fun. It was kind of neat because we had a bunch of new faces, a bunch of younger kids who haven’t been to this meet before or this was only their second time attending this meet. So it was really fun to watch them get excited for their teammates and get excited for themselves and really work hard to earn some points together as a group,” said RDCSC Coach Mandi Smith of the 20 swimmers the Club brought to the meet.

Over the course of the three day long meet, which ran from Friday through Sunday this past weekend, Red Deer’s swimmers earned a total of 24 medals, including 16 golds, six silvers and two bronze.

“All the kids, they all performed at their best across the board,” Smith said.

“I’m really happy because it shows my own improvement whenever I break my own records and always when you break a new record that you haven’t already held, it’s a really great feeling because that puts you as the fastest 15-year-old in Alberta ever at that point,” said Young, who also broke his own provincial records in the 15-year-old Boys’ 50m breast stroke and the 200m IM, as well as setting a brand new provincial record in the 100m IM on his way to six gold medals on the weekend.

“He was lots of best times, so best time this time of year is really, really great. That’s really exciting,” Smith said of Young.

That becomes even more important, she said, as Olympic Trials draw closer.

One thing to consider when buying a home for revenue purposes is positive cash flow, make sure that the income generated by the rental is more than you are putting out every month for mortgage

and repair expenses.

As long as you have covered your mortgage and property tax and insurance costs with a little extra to stash away for property maintenance you will have a wonderful start on building some value into your portfolio!

Speaking of maintenance, the biggest mistake I see landlords make is putting carpet into rental properties.

Carpet is inexpensive but the need to replace it more often makes it actually the more expensive option in a rental property.

Hard surface such as vinyl planking and laminate are far better options even though the cost may be more expensive at the outset. Cats cannot scratch and fray laminate and Rover probably won’t ruin a vinyl floor when he has an accident! Most kid damage like crayons and spilled juice will wipe right up from any

hard surface while these same scenarios can destroy carpet.

I have been using rubber baseboards commercially for years and then I bought a home that had them installed and I never even noticed!

Rubber base is about $1 a linear foot, is moulded to look like wood and comes in all shades and they NEVER have to be painted!

They can be installed with a sharp knife and a tube of construction adhesive and are absolutely beautiful. This is a perfect product for your rental and you don’t have to worry about tenants banging their vacuums into them or denting them and chipping the paint.

It is a good idea when doing the initial walk-through with tenants that you video tape the entire transaction.

there are discrepancies when the move out is complete and you are returning the damage deposit. You can refer back to your initial walk through video for proof of before rental condition and it is an easy thing to do on your smart phone or ipad.

The rental market is a smart one, real estate is always a good investment and you will enjoy the return on your money in the long term.

Be good to your tenants and give incentives to the ones who stay long term and treat your house well.

A card or gift basket at Christmas goes a long way to saying ‘thank you’ to people who live in your home and who are helping to fund your future. Keep in touch and ask if they need anything to make their stay more pleasurable.

Do you need a Ferrari level mortgage?

We all want the best.

For instance, a Ferrari is way better than a minivan.

It’s faster, sleeker and much more prestigious.

But what if you have three children and drive to hockey every Saturday and need the extra space? All of a sudden that minivan is looking much more appealing. And when you factor in the higher costs associated with maintaining every single aspect of that Ferrari? That minivan is downright shiny.

This theory applies to your mortgage too.

I’ll admit there is something reassuring about a brick and mortar building which you can visit up to seven days a week and be greeted by a friendly clerk who helps you do whatever it is you need to do.

That the prestige many of us place on being with a major bank for our mortgage is not quite what we thought. What if in making the choice to deal with your bank you doomed yourself to higher costs and hidden clauses? All of a sudden your Ferrari of a bank seems less appealing.

Let’s look at a few of the unexpected costs.

1. Payout penalties - there is no standard on how lenders charge this penalty if you break the mortgage. Your mortgage is a contract and you will have to pay a fee to get out early. I have seen these range from $3,500 to $18,000 on the same exact mortgage with the only difference being the lending institution. Life happens and you may end up needing out early due to a marital break down, a job loss or other life

2. Prepayment privileges - did you know that some lenders do not apply your extra payments right away?

It’s very true. They hold the funds in a separate account where they generate and keep the interest gains while you miss out on the full benefit you are striving for.

3. Interest compounding periods - did you also know that some lenders compound interest on a Home Equity Line of Credit monthly? Einstein identified compound interest as the eighth wonder of the world and stated that those who know how to use it properly will benefit greatly.

This monthly calculation difference over that of a semi-annual will cost you more in the long run.

4. Collateral mortgages - a collateral mortgage is where the lender registers on the title that you owe them more than you actually do. The benefit is that you can borrow additional funds down the road if you so choose without having to visit a lawyer as there is no change to the

title of the property. The downside is these mortgages are much harder to switch out a new lender at renewal which could leave you with a higher than market best rate. Your other borrowing such as for a vehicle or credit cards can now be tied to your mortgage through the fine print. Depending on the lender you may be required to pay out all of the borrowing associated with the mortgage if you sell. This can leave you in a poor position when you go to buy again with less than you thought as a down payment.

5. Porting policies – some of the banks have strange policies. For example, one has a policy where you keep the current mortgage as is and any new funds are taken in a new term at a new rate with a new renewal. That leaves you never able to move your mortgage to a new lender without incurring some penalty. You are stuck potentially not being able to get the best rates which costs you greatly.

All I’m saying is this. Ask questions before you sign.
