With BC Hydro prices on the rise more people are going green by investing in renewable energy.

Solar energy is renewable, resilient and reliable, according to Wes Hyde, lead installer at Viridian Energy Co-operative, and is being seen more on the Island.

“People are actually taking their money out of pensions and investing into solar,” said Hyde. “With BC Hydro prices going up and solar prices – coming down we’ve reached a point where it actually financially makes sense to invest.”

BC Hydro is applying a four per cent increase in rates beginning in April that would add roughly $4 to most monthy power bills.

Hyde and Viridian Energy will be installing a small solar power system on the Bainbridge Water Treatment Plant in Port Alberni in the coming weeks. Hyde said

the new system will offset power usage within the building and will be used to test the technology and show people how it is used. “[The new system] will be used to feed a small amount of energy into the building which will be 100 per cent consumed on site,” Hyde said.

The Bainbridge Water Treatment Plant was completely reconstructed in December 2015 and is now a $4 million facility. The plant has a “green” roof and Hyde said the solar panels Wes Hyde won’t go through the roofing membrane but instead they’ll sit on top of the roof and use gravel to hold them down.

Four, three-by-six foot, panels are expected to provide enough energy to power the chlorine injector pumps at the plant.

Valley to host tsunami exercise A mock earthquake and tsunami will be hitting the Alberni Valley and the aftereffects will be felt June 7–10 in an effort to help the AlberniClayoquot Regional District better understand how to be prepared for the real thing.

The ACRD in conjunction with the province are coordinating British Columbia’s firstever provincially led, full-scale earthquake response exercise that will test elements of the new B.C. Earthquake Immediate Response Plan. The province has provided $1 million to support Exercise Coastal Response.

“The auditor general of the province took a look at the province’s preparedness for major emergencies and came up with a number of recommendations,” said Russell Dyson, chief administrative officer at the ACRD.

“The province has taken action as a result of the recommendations and announced Exercise Coastal Response.”

Dyson said the province needed a venue for the exercise and given Port Alberni’s history in dealing with a

tsunami in the 1960s, and having a tsunami warning system, that here would be an ideal location.

The exercise will involve the realtime deployment of the Provincial Coordination Team, a cross-government group that can be activated to bring support to a local authority in an emergency, and the Heavy Urban Search and Rescue team from Vancouver.

“We anticipate close to 300 different professionals that are engaged in the exercise that will be here within the community,” Dyson said. “We want to give them, outside of the exercise, that Port Alberni hospitality.”

The ACRD will be operating an emergency operations centre during the June

exercise to help coordinate resources and situation reports for the province, members of the public and first responders who will be out in the field.

“The public can be assured that there won’t be disruptions to the day-to-day but what they will see is components of a response in parts of the community,” Dyson said.

Dyson encourages people to prepare themselves prior to the exercise by having a grab and go kit ready, filled with essential items that could help them and their families in the case of an emergency.

A combined project utilizing renewable energy is underway at West Coast General Hospital.

A roof-top makeover is in progress at the hospital where photovoltaic solar panels are being installed.

Victor Noll, facilities, maintenance and operations manager at WCGH, said the solar panels are expected to be installed and ready to go by mid-March.

There are 404 solar panels being installed, said Scott Fleenor, principal at Terratek Energy Solutions, the company tendered for the install. Fleenor thinks this is the largest photovoltaic installation on the Island.

will help reduce operating costs, energy consumption and waste for the hospital while producing energy locally.

determined that by installing a heatrecovery chiller at WCGH they could use waste heat for the hospital’s domestic hot water.

Fourt said the heatrecovery chiller will lower greenhouse gas emissions and the use of fossil fuels, but will increase the hospital’s electrical consumption.

To mitigate the increase in power usage from the new chiller, Fourt said photovoltaic solar panels were decided for the hospital’s roof. This is the first photovoltaic solar panels that generate electricity for a healthcare facility on the Island.

“The thought was, well, when we’re in the chilling, cooling modes, or high chilling cooling modes, we will probably have some sunshine around so maybe we could generate our own power.” Fourt said.

“Hot sunny days is when our electricity rates are the highest, because we have high demand, so [the solar panels] will help to offset that.”

Mieras and his wife Kathy live completely off the grid in a rural, boat-access only, location in Barkley Sound where they run a scuba diving and adventure lodge. They optimize the use of a generator, battery bank and solar panels to create power.

“We feel like we have to take care of the environment as best we can,” Mieras said. “And yes, we use power, there’s no question about it, but we don’t waste it.”

Mieras installed the panels on his roof three years ago and said with how much power they save daily, he should have the panels completely paid for in three and a half years. Mieras’ panels are most efficient on sunny summer afternoons which reduces the

amount of time his generator will have to run.

“We actually create more power than we use and the battery bank fills up, fills up, fills up,” Mieras said.”

Feeling that North America is far behind in using renewable energy, Mieras believes our country could take some energy-saving tips from Europe, who are the No. 2 global leaders in the development and application of renewable energy.

“There’s so many things that you can build into a house, even in a townhouse, that will reduce power use and generate power at the same time,” Mieras said.

Hyde talked about the success of other communities currently using or developing solar energy projects.

“The City of Kimberley invested huge into what they call a sun mine,” Hyde said. “They invested 5.3 million dollars and they own their own system and sell to BC Hydro at a base contract for over 25 years.”

Nelson has their own community solar garden, Hyde said; the Cowichan Valley has a group of investors and solar advocates looking to lease land to develop a solar farm and a First Nations community in Sooke uses thermal solar on their homes.

“Basically people are investing in bonds and those bonds then finance solar projects,” Hyde said.

“I put it together myself and bought all of the stuff on eBay,” Alemany said.

Alemany said his small solar system was an experiment and that since prices on solar panels have come down he plans to upgrade to a new system that will start producing some real power.

“In 2008 it was about three dollars a watt for a solar panel,” Alemany said. “Now you can get them for under a dollar, so its come down significantly.

Our hydro rates have obviously gone up significantly, so you put that together and you start approaching the point where it’s feasible to put in solar panels.”

Anderson honoured with Caring Award KARLY BLATS

Port Alberni’s Sally Anderson has won the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award for her dedicated involvement with the Breakfast Club of Canada.

Gov. Gen. David Johnston presented her with the award last week in Vancouver.

The Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award, created in 1995, recognizes living Canadians and permanent residents who have made a significant, sustained, unpaid contribution to their community, in Canada or abroad.

Anderson is a seasoned volunteer in Port Alberni and has been involved with many notable charities, churches

and community events since she moved to the valley in 1974 from

California. She is the organizer and director of the Alberni Valley

NeighbourLink Society that runs the Read and Feed program, a breakfast

service run by close to 150 volunteers at four elementary schools in the Valley, providing students with a nutritious breakfast and literary aid.

Anderson was watching her grandson play hockey a few weeks ago at the Multiplex when she first heard she was a recipient for the award.

“I got an e-mail, I looked at it, and thought it was spam so I closed it back up,” Anderson said.

“I had no clue I was nominated.”

After some additional research and a phone call from the Governor General’s secretary, Anderson was assured the award was in fact legitimate.

Initially, Anderson was skeptical to

travel to Vancouver, where the ceremony was held at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts, because of the long distance she’d have to trek from the Island. She said Robin Ryan, provincial coordinator of the Breakfast Club of Canada, who nominated Anderson, convinced her to go to the ceremony to spread the word and advertise about the breakfast club.

“I was in awe at the many other volunteers that went across the stage, who put in many years caring for their communities,” Anderson said.

Helping people is in Anderson’s family tree. Her mom and dad actively volunteered in Ontario, where she

grew up, and taught her and her siblings to help others and “pay it forward.”

“Wherever you are put in this life that’s your corner. You’ve got to shine and do the best you can with what you have and say thank you,” Anderson said.

Anderson and a group of board members at her church formed the NeighbourLink Society 11 years ago because they wanted to get together to do something in Port Alberni as a group.

Today the Read and Feed program serves more than 300 students daily, ensuring they get a healthy breakfast to start their day.

She says she is not the only one deserving of this Cont’d on A8 award.

RAVEN COAL FINALLY DEAD

We’re celebrating a decade of bringing community news to the Valley.

I

f there was anything attractive about the Raven coal mine proposal, it was jobs.

Then again, jobs at what price?

Surely, we as a society, at least on Vancouver Island, have moved past coal as a legitimate source for, well, anything. We should honour and admire the past, a time when places not so far away from here—like Union Bay and Cumberland—thrived because of coal mines. People, a lot of people, died in those mines.

But coal is so 1880.

That was a time when we didn’t know what we know now about air quality or the effect coal production has on the ocean, and how it can decimate links in the food chain.

China doesn’t seem to care. Have you seen the photos of their air quality?

In the end, Canadians have Raven Coal bottled air—that’s right, air—from here had no real and sold it to the support, not Chinese who are just from the looking for a fresh breath. people...

Coal is a cheap fuel for industry. We don’t have to be cheap.

The Raven proposal hung around the periphery of possibility and had its proponents because of the jobs it promised.

For the Alberni Valley, those jobs were never in the high numbers. For other central Island communities, such as Parksville-Qualicum Beach, they were practically non-existent.

In the end, Raven Coal had no real support, not from the people and not from the Environmental Assessment Office.

Its death was one whose time had come, and none too soon.

Cycling route to wind its way down the Island Alberni cycling advocates were not consulted on the proposed Vancouver Island ‘Inside Passage’ bike route.

Cyclist organizations across Vancouver Island are organizing an Island-long bike route.

In La Belle Province, it is known as La Route Verte — the Greenway.

It’s a sprawling 5,300-kilometre collection of designated roads, cycle paths and bike lanes that the National Post called a “cultural, historic, environmental, and artistic tribute to Quebec,” and National Geographic proclaimed the world’s best cycle route. It is also an economic generator, pumping an estimated $95.4 million into the Quebec economy annually, while attracting cycle tourists from around the globe to stay in local inns, eat local food and sightsee at local attractions.

It’s a success story some Vancouver Island cyclists want to see repeated here.

Members of the Greater Nanaimo Cycling Coalition and the Comox Valley Cycling Coalition have spent months mapping a cycle route from Mill Bay to Comox. It is now their goal to lobby provincial and local government to adopt the project and provide the seed money to turn dream into reality.

“There is no budget set. We are at that point in the project.”

That’s not the case in the Alberni Valley— and that’s why the it’s not part of the route.

Port Alberni city councillor Chris Alemany, who has been pushing for cycling infrastructure in Port Alberni, said he hopes that someday a similar project could come here.

“In time I would hope we will see a trail develop along our E&N corridor through Port Alberni and the ACRD as well but there are some pretty significant geographical challenges to overcome,” said Alemany.

Cicon, who has proposed a $50,000 investment into bike lanes to city council, agreed.

“It would require a lot of work,” Cicon said of the E&N route.

“It would be beautiful but you would have to extend culverts, widen bridges.”

Cycle Alberni wasn’t consulted either, say members Sarah Thomas and John Mayba. Thomas said that there’s still a lot of work to be done within town before Island-wide cycling infrastructure could come here.

“If we want to bring that kind of thing here, we have to build up the cycling infrastructure in town so there’s something here for them,” she said.

The coalition’s next step is a push to market the idea to Vancouver Island communities.

The Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District is seeking proposals from qualified Proponents for Branding and Marketing services for the Long Beach Airport.

Overview The Long Beach Airport (YAZ), is situated 11km south of Tofino and 30 km north of Ucluelet on the Pacific Rim Highway. It is bordered by the Pacific Ocean, the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation and the Pacific Rim National Park.

Please be advised that Cherry Creek Waterworks Maintenance Department will be flushing the water lines during the four-week period of

Goals and Objectives: The objective of the RFP is to enter into an agreement for services that will provide branding and marketing services to YAZ, including, but not limited to: Identity Airport “brand” (logo and tag messages) and development of a branding strategy.

Water main flushing is part of CCWD’s maintenance program to remove sediment and to maintain good water quality. This process may temporarily result in cloudy water and/or changes in water pressure. YOUR WATER REMAINS SAFE TO USE, however once flushing is complete, we recommend you run your outside tap for a minimum of five minutes, or until the water runs clear, flush the tank and the back of toilets, and flush your hot water tank per manufacturer’s instructions. Please check your water supply before doing laundry to avoid possible staining.

Proposals will NOT be opened in public.

“There are not enough pieces of this certificate to cut apart and share with the hundreds of volunteers and supporters of the Read and Feed program, who stand by me in this endeavour to care for Port Alberni’s elementary school children,” she said.

Anderson is always looking for more volunteers to help with various programs and services in the community and said that having some “young blood” around to help would be beneficial as many of the volunteers are seniors.

Aside from her volunteerism, Anderson is widely recognized as the Valley’s “flag lady,” a role she said many look forward to. From June to September each year, Anderson shuffles her schedule to assure she’s ready to wave her various flags, dressed in colourful costumes, for McLean Mill steam train passengers, when the locomotive travels past her house.

Anderson recognizes the many other volunteers that work together with the NeighbourLink Society and wants to share her award with them all.

Bulldogs, Clippers even in playoffs The Nanaimo Clippers shut down the Alberni Valley Bulldogs in Game 2 to tie their first-round B.C. Hockey League playoff series at one game apiece.

The Clips shut out the ‘Dogs 4-0 on Sunday night at Frank Crane Arena.

From Clippers coach Mike Vandekamp’s perspective, “it was more like a playoff game” out there.

The Bulldogs had won game one of the playoffs the Frank Crane Arena 2-1.

Bulldog Ryan Finnegan scored twice in the first period of the opening game to give the Bulldogs the win.

Vandekamp was happier with Sunday night’s game.

“We played harder, there was more spirit to our game, we physically committed to being on the inside better, won more battles, had the puck more,” he said.

“Those were some of the things we desperately needed to do.”

The series now moves to Port Alberni.

“It is good to know that we have won there,” Vandekamp said. “It’s a hard building to play in and always has been, so we’ve got to dig deep.”

GAME ON … Game 3 will be Tuesday (March 8) at 7 p.m. at Port Alberni’s Weyerhaeuser Arena and Game 4 is Wednesday, also a 7 p.m. start at Alberni.

The Van Isle Midget A Bulldogs celebrate winning the VIAHA Island Tier 3 championships last week. They are off to the provincials in Gibsons March 13–18.

Edith our sister, mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed away in the early hours of Feb. 28, 2016 at the age of 94.

She was born in England on July 11, 1921.

She is predeceased by her parents; father, James Lawrenson in 1960, mother, Edith Lawrenson in 1971, her husband Ian (Iggy) in 1985, her sister Eileen, brother Leslie, her sons Gary in 1971 and Randy in 1993.

She leaves behind: her sister, Joyce Hoidas (Art), brother Stan Lawrenson (Fran), son Ian St. Claire (Linda), grandchildren, Dale St. Claire (Janice), Michael St. Claire, Angela Zumbo (Frank), Kristie St. Claire, Jamie St. Claire (Linda), Sarah Cyr (Steve), Luke St. Claire (Laura), Corbin Gislason and Laura Gislason (Kyle) and great grandchildren: Emily, Moriah, Serra, Shaylynn, Maddie, Kohen, Nate, Maggie, and Esme. Edith has other nephews and nieces in Victoria, Courtenay and Australia.

Edith immigrated to Canada from Darwen, Lancashire, England at the age of seven with her family and they lived in several farming communities in Alberta and Saskatchewan before coming to BC. Edith always enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing and traveling in her later years with her siblings. Her real love was her family and she was interested in their lives and activities throughout her life. Edith was caring, kind, dignified and a wonderful matriarch to the family. She had many close friends and was very active in her faith.

She spent her last few months at West Coast General Hospital and received wonderful care from all the nursing staff, other disciplines, Dr. Damian White, Dr. Ean Smit and her lovely roommate Nicole Beer.

Bernstein, Rolf

May 19, 1920 – February 26, 2016 Rolf Bernstein passed away peacefully in Fir Park Village, Port Alberni, BC in the early morning of February 26, 2016 and is now forever at home with the Savior he faithfully served for nearly 96 years.

Rolf was predeceased by grandsons Everett, Alex and Manfred Bernstein, as well as his sister, Ingrid and brother Hanno, both of Germany.

Rolf is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Lucia, his sons Ralph (Liz), Manfred (Sharon) of Port Alberni, and daughter Marina Bernstein of Vancouver.

Rolf loved his grandchildren Brandon (Kyla), Warren (Diane), Kristopher (Shaylah) Bernstein and two great-grandchildren Makenna and Beckett Bernstein.

Born in Dresden Germany, Rolf immigrated to Canada in 1954, with his wife and children following in 1955. They settled in Port Alberni where Rolf began his 29 year career with MacMillan Bloedel at the APD, Plywoods and later at the Alpulp Pulp Mill from where he would later retire.

In his younger years, Rolf loved hiking and mountain climbing with his sons and friends on many of the local mountain peaks.

During those years, Rolf also took great enjoyment being a scout leader in the Alberni Valley scouting movement, having taken many local youths on hikes, to camps and jamborees.

Rolf ’s real passion came very close to his retirement. Stained glass work started as a hobby for him and soon became his passion and vocation. His beautiful stained glass creations have found their way to Europe, across Canada, the United States and can be seen in Port Alberni, in homes, businesses and notably the beautiful windows at The Grace Lutheran Church and the glorious window in Our Savior Lutheran Church in Parksville.

The family of Rolf would like to extend their sincere thanks and gratitude to the nurses and staff of Fir Park Village, for taking the greatest care of Rolf during his last two years.

Funeral services will be held on March 12, 2016 at 1:00 pm at the Grace Lutheran Church (4408 Redford Street, Port Alberni, BC), with a tea to follow.

The island sits at the mouth of Clayoquot Sound, one edge of it a mile off the busy Tofino waterfront, the other fronting the yawning Pacific Ocean.

Tall, moss-bearded evergreens, damp, tangled underbrush and endless waves pounding the sand bars and rocky outcroppings that mark its shores make it the epitome of rugged Vancouver Island beauty.

Some would have arrived here in 1990, discovered the zoning encouraged development, and swooned over the dollar signs in their eyes. Susan Bloom saw a different kind of opportunity.

A generation after purchasing Clayoquot Island and nurturing it into a protected slice of West Coast heaven, Bloom has now ensured it will remain that way for generations to come.

On Monday, the steward of this ecological and historical jewel announced she was ceding ownership of the Island’s wilderness portion to the Nature Conservancy of Canada.

NCC regional vicepresident Linda Hannah said it has

been an honour to work with someone with those values. “I think we need to celebrate that choice,�

Hannah said. “She’s a very quiet, deeply principled individual.

I’d like to applaud her for taking a different path.�

Also known as Stubbs Island, Clayoquot Island sits near the brink of Pacific Rim National Park to the south and is the gateway to the Clayoquot Biosphere Reserve to the north.

Bloom has donated approximately twothirds of the island (its wildest 93 acres) to the NCC, while retaining ownership of its more developed portion. According to Hannah, the property is unique among NCC holding.

A dense old-growth and mature secondgrowth Coastal Western Hemlock forest collides with four-meter thickets of California wax-myrtle, a vulnerable shrub found only in the coastal regions.The island hosted the first European settlement on the west coast of Vancouver Island. It evolved into a fishing village of about 400 people with a hotel, school, jailhouse and beer parlour.

It served as the area’s commercial hub before being

overtaken by Tofino.

Schooners stocking for a journey across the Bering Sea anchored offshore and a Japanese community existed on it prior to the internment programs of the Second World War. The community had disappeared and the property had fallen into neglect through a series of private owners by the time Bloom purchased it and set about cleansing it of bottles and other refuse. She established a few small off-the-grid outbuildings and a heritage garden on the old townsite, built a boardwalk through the woods and made sure the rest of the island was left to exist as nature intended.

Hannah thinks it is a fascinating story in how, after 150 years of use, it is now returning to its natural state. “To go about re-wilding it is a neat circle,� she said.

Public use of Clayoquot Island will continue to be by invitation only.

The caretakers who tend to the gardens and other upkeep will remain its only residents. The NCC will spend the next year taking inventory of the property and developing a ecological management plan,

funded again by the generosity of its former owner.

Bloom declined an interview request and the NCC took pains to deflect any questions that might infringe on her privacy. She is a resident of B.C. but not of Tofino, does not spend as much time on the property as she used to and is no longer young.

She did, however, release the following prepared statement. “From the very first time I visited and then became the owner of Clayoquot Island, my goal has been to protect the island from any more development, to preserve it in its natural wild state,� she said. “My recent lifetime goal is to see that this beautiful land, steeped in Canadian history, be placed into safe conservation hands and cared for in perpetuity.�

Hannah hopes Bloom’s generosity and commitment to conservation will inspire others. “It has been an absolute pleasure to work with Ms. Bloom to help her realize her vision,� she said. “Hopefully this will pave the way for others. “We have so much.

Sky currently resides in the very musical west end of Toronto since 2008 when he released his debut album ‘On The Round’ produced by David Baxter (Justin Rutledge, Treassa Levasseur).

Since then, Sky has lived and performed across the country and is currently hard at work finishing his third album which will be released this spring.

He has toured the country and has played Toronto hot spots Lees Palace, the Horseshoe Tavern, The Dakota Tavern, Not My Dog, The Cadillac Lounge and The Cameron House where he was artists in residence last summer.

Sky plays Char’s Landing on March 8 at 8 p.m.
