“Beyond commemorating an outstanding Canadian, I believe that featuring her on Canadian banknotes would give all Canadians the opportunity to appreciate the importance of individuals like Martha and the important role women have played in shaping our country and the North,” Pasloski wrote.

An online petition calling for the Bank of Canada to add women from Canadian history to banknotes has over 72,000 signatures.

Aspiring Liberal candidate restored to Team Yukon pep rally after being dropped twice Maura Forrest News Reporter

otential Liberal candidate Jeane Lassen has been reinvited to speak at a Team Yukon pep rally prior to the 2016 Arctic Winter Games, after she says she was dropped from the list of speakers by the premier’s office.

Lassen, an Olympic weightlifter, will speak to Team Yukon on Thursday, before the group leaves for Nuuk, Greenland to compete in the Games.

Premier Darrell Pasloski made the announcement on Twitter on Tuesday evening. “Proud to personally invite Yukon Olympian @jeanelassen to pump up our athletes at Team Yukon Pep Rally,” he wrote.

Lassen was first dropped from the roster the same day she announced her plans to run for the Liberals in Takhini-Kopper King, a decision she believes was political.

“The implication is that I would make a political message, potentially,” she said.

Team Yukon is funded by the sport and recreation branch of the Department of Community Services. Lassen said she called Community Services Minister Currie Dixon to ask for an explanation after her speech was cancelled.

“He said it could look like they’re endorsing a political candidate,” she said.

But Dixon followed up with Lassen the next day to confirm that her name had been put back on the list of speakers. “I thank him for being supportive,” she said.

Four days later, however, Lassen discovered she’d been dropped once again, with no explanation.

“It’s really disappointing. So often we talk about sport being socially engaging,” she said on Tuesday. “I’m still a Yukoner at heart and the same person that I was before I made this announcement.”

But on Tuesday evening, after the CBC published Lassen’s story, she received a phone call from Pasloski.

“As you probably saw on Twitter, I have been re-re-invited to the pep rally,” Lassen later told the News in an email. “The premier confirmed that the decision came from his office and that it was reversed.”

Lassen’s speech, which she sent to the News, is decidedly not political. She plans to urge the athletes to create personal “highlight reels” from the Games.

“Most of the magical moments have nothing to do with the score of the game,” it reads. “The magical moments that make up our highlight reels are that play of the day where you pulled off a slick move out of nowhere... or when your competitor makes you laugh after the race and you don’t even speak the same language.

“Your highlight reel is anything and everything that matters to you, everything we feel good about.”

Dixon and the premier’s office did not respond to requests for comment.

Ryce said Nehass started to become worried about how his food was prepared and worried “about how people might be taking advantage of him.”

He had fears when it came to his medical care and worries about missing and murdered aboriginal women. He would write voluminous letters to anyone from United Nations officials to the prime minister.

As that behaviour increased staff became “less tolerant,” Ryce said. He later clarified he meant “we had no training in dealing with that kind of issue.”

There were times, Ryce said,

that Nehass was restrained for several days, forced to wear handcuffs and shackles both inside and outside of his cell.

Ryce acknowledged that was against jail policy but said it “was ordered done.”

At points, when Nehass was allowed to shower, he remained handcuffed and shackled.

Ryce said he became concerned when he saw red marks around Nehass’s wrists and ankles and as well as sometimes broken skin from the restraints.

He said he wrote a report to his supervisors about it, but he doesn’t know what happened to that report.

At one point Nehass manufactured some rudimentary “guards” out of socks to wrap around his ankles and wrists,

he said.

It’s not clear when Ryce wrote his report about the abrasions from the shackles.

He agreed with Nehass’s lawyer that it could have been in 2013.

If that’s the case, it was likely before Wooding took on his job.

Wooding was also asked about concerns around Nehass’s shackles. He testified to one incident where he said multiple staff had witnessed Nehass tightening the shackles on himself.

Sometimes Nehass didn’t get the opportunity to go to the yard for fresh air if there weren’t enough guards to accompany him, Ryce said.

In segregation Nehass was only allowed out of his cell for one hour a day, Ryce said.

In the SLU the amount of time out can vary depending on what other inmates are living on the unit, Wooding testified.

There were occasions when Nehass was allowed out in the common area of the SLU with two or three other people, Ryce said, but those were “infrequent.”

Ryce testified he had concerns about the way Nehass was housed.

He was losing weight and sleeping 16 to 18 hours a day, he said. He used to sing and tell stories, now he was “just extremely depressed... and angry.”

This part of the bill is identical to a private member’s bill introduced

by Conservative MP Ryan Leef in the spring of 2014. That bill received support from all three major parties, but Leef withdrew it after realizing it likely wouldn’t be passed in time for the 2015 federal election.

The problem was that MPs introduce hundreds of bills and motions each session. The order in which those bills are debated is decided by lottery. At the time, Leef was drawn 130th out of 243 MPs. But this time, Bagnell said he’s 34th on the list, which should mean his bill will come up for second reading within a year.

Bagnell’s bill also contains some new changes to the Corrections and Conditional Release Act that weren’t included in Leef’s bill. “We’re certainly glad to see that Mr. Bagnell is addressing this issue and bringing it forward again,” Mooney said. “We haven’t actually had a discussion with Mr. Bagnell, but we certainly would look forward to having those discussions

with him and reviewing the bill.”

This bill is identical to one tabled by Liberal MP Sean Casey in March 2015, which, like Leef’s, went nowhere.

Most private member’s bills never become law, but Bagnell said he’s optimistic about this one.

“It was very positively received the last time it came forward,” he said. “Hopefully that’s a good sign.”

Al Cushing, CEO of the Yukon Arts Centre, said the funding helps cover the cost of the project, which comes in at around $355,000.

Cushing said he was aware the funding announcement was coming, which is why the sound system renewal was carried out last year.

While the new system was being installed, Cushing said, the old system was moved to the orchestra pit and run from there.

Cushing said he stuck his head in during Natalie MacMaster’s performance at the Arts Centre on Friday and said the sound was “clean and clear.”

“Previously when you went to see a show the sound came out from the left and the right,” Cushing said.

The new sound system was also used for this year’s Available Light Film Festival screenings, he added.

The only piece missing to make the replacement complete is the installation of an infrared hearing assistance system.

It consists of a number of infrared transmitters, mounted on walls, as well as infrared receivers used by guests. The transmitter carries the sound from the sound system to the receivers, allowing guests with impaired hearing to enjoy the same performance as others.

Les EssentiElles, a non-profit organization based in Whitehorse representing the interests of French-speaking women in the Yukon, also received $140,121 in core funding over the next three years.

“We’re very pleased our funding was renewed,” said executive director Ketsia Houde.

“We didn’t know if it was going to be, with the last government.”

The funding goes toward an annual exhibition, workshops for women, and advocacy, she explained.

Other organizations that received funding include the Association franco-yukonnaise, the Dawson City Arts Society, the Dawson City Music Festival Association, Jazz Yukon, the Nakai Ensemble Theatre, Whitehorse Concerts, and the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Society.

The skinny on Northwestel’s ‘skinny’ cable TV package Maura Forrest News Reporter

orthwestel has unveiled its new “skinny” basic cable TV package, but the deal may not be quite as sweet as it appears.

The TV Lite package costs $24.95 a month, and includes 62 television channels, including 27 high-definition channels, and 23 live radio stations.

Customers can also add pickand-pay channels or “theme packs” that offer more sports, lifestyle and entertainment channels, at an additional cost.

“We’re really excited to offer a product that we feel is the best available in the North,” said Northwestel spokesperson Adriann Kennedy.

The new plan was released on Tuesday, to coincide with new basic cable packages offered by providers across Canada.

Last year, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission ordered cable providers to offer strippeddown packages for $25 a month or less by March of 2016.

At the time, Northwestel claimed it was exempt from the decision because it had fewer than 20,000 subscribers. But the CBC reported that the company felt it would likely have to offer a skinny package anyway, to compete with satellite TV providers.

But on Tuesday, Kennedy said the new package is all about giving customers more “flexibility and choice.”

“I think people want solutions that deliver entertainment,” she said.

Northwestel is also dropping the price of its existing Pulse TV Essentials package from $47.49 a month to $44.95 a month. It says

But a closer look at the TV Lite package reveals that it may not be as good as it sounds.

For one thing, though the plan technically offers 62 channels, over half of them belong to just seven networks. The package includes six CBC stations, eight CTV stations and five Global stations. ABC, APTN, CityTV, CBS, FOX, ICI, NBC and PBS are also featured more than once.

And the TV Lite package is not eligible for several promotions that make the TV Essentials package more appealing.

For instance, TV Lite cannot be bundled with Internet, while TV

Essentials customers get a $12 monthly discount on their TV bill if they bundle it with Internet.

Let’s break down the math.

A TV Essentials customer with a 110-gigabyte Internet plan – what Northwestel defines as a moderate user – will pay $44.95 a month for over 230 TV channels and $79.95 a month for Internet, minus a $12 discount. That adds up to $112.90 a month.

A $25-a-month TV Lite customer with the same Internet plan will forego the discount, and end up paying $104.95 a month – an $8 difference for less than half the number of channels.

And that’s without any addons. If the TV Lite customer adds

any pick-and-pay channels at $2.95 a piece, or one of those theme packs at $6.95 a month, the plan could quickly end up costing more than the existing TV Essentials package.

TV Essentials customers also receive free installation and a discount for the first four months of their subscription, perks that are not offered to TV Lite clients.

And Northwestel is also not going out of its way to advertise the new deal. On the company’s webpage that gives an overview of its TV plans, the TV Lite plan is given a single line near the top of the page, in smaller font. It’s also not included among the list of options for customers who

choose to build their own packages online.

Northwestel is not alone, however. Providers across Canada have come under fire for offering skinny basic packages that aren’t as cheap as they appear, often because of additional fees for extra channels.

A report has also surfaced that sales staff at Bell Canada have been instructed not to promote the plan.

On Tuesday, Kennedy told the News that Northwestel’s customer service representatives had been trained in all the specifics of the new plan.

But when the News called the company’s customer service line, posing as a potential customer who’d recently moved, the agent didn’t mention the TV Lite plan until explicitly asked about it.

And when asked about it, she immediately offered discouragements from subscribing to the skinny package.

“All you get is CBC, CTV, like all those news channels,” she said. “You would lose all of the sports channels.”

She also emphasized that TV Lite customers would receive fewer than half of the channels in the TV Essentials plan, and would not be eligible for bundling discounts and other promotions.

“You do lose quite a lot of content,” she said.

Kennedy wouldn’t say whether the number of Northwestel’s TV customers is growing or shrinking, but she did say that “both of the announcements we made today were in response to what customers were asking for.”

Northwestel’s TV Lite plan is not available in Norman Wells.

ommunity. For me, community defines the Yukon as much as our mountains and rivers. It’s why I choose to live in the Yukon, and it’s what has formed the heart of the Yukon Anti-Poverty Coalition for these last 20 years.

Whitehorse Connects is one YAPC initiative which exemplifies the organization’s commitment to community.

The first Whitehorse Connects was held as part of Poverty and Homelessness Action Week in October 2008. The event was to be based on the structure of similar events held in San Francisco and Vancouver (Project Homeless Connects) where businesses, nonprofit organizations and government departments offer free goods and services to the homeless. YAPC rented the former L’AFY space on Strickland Street (currently the Whitehorse Food Bank), and contacted a number of organizations who agreed to provide services.

Our doors opened at 10 am. Musicians offered live music all day. One person cut hair in an office space, and several service organizations offered information and goods to take away from tables set along the perimeter of the room. Coffee, tea and snacks were available all day. At 5 p.m., tables were rearranged and a community potluck was held.

While planning that first Connects, we were unsure if any one would attend. In fact, over 180 people attended that first Connects Day, and many guests expressed how grateful they were to have a non-judgmental space to just be for the day.

The connection between guests and service providers, the deep appreciation expressed by guests, and the simplicity of providing a warm, welcoming space for the marginalized in our community inspired Connects Day organizers and the Yukon AntiPoverty Coalition. In the winter of 2008, YAPC members and co-chairs committed to hosting three Connects Day per year.

Whitehorse Connects has evolved organically since that first event in 2008. All but one of the 21 subsequent Connects Days have been held at the Old Fire Hall. Our doors open at 10 am, and we welcome guests until 2 p.m.

Over time, our guests have defined what services are most important to them, and these have become our core services. Haircuts, portraits, physiotherapy (or massage), nursing outreach through foot care, blood pressure testing and immunizations are our current core services. Guests are offered free clothing to take away, comfort kits, snacks and a hot lunch. Local musicians volunteer to play live music all day.

But Connects is far more than the services offered. It is community at its best. It is a place

where there is no distinction between service provider, volunteer and guest. All are welcome, and all are accepted for who they are. It is a room full of acceptance and love.

And it is a very full room. We welcome over 200 guests to every Connects Day, and our numbers are increasing. Our guests include a broad cross-section of Whitehorse: homeless people, the working poor, youth, elders, single parents, caregivers, new Canadians, First Nations, non-First Nations. It is a true picture of Whitehorse.

Those supporting Connects Day also represent a broad cross section of Whitehorse.

Since 2008, over 100 businesses and organizations have supported Whitehorse Connects through in-kind or financial support.

We have welcomed volunteers from all three high schools, MacCauley Lodge, the business community, all levels of government and the community at large. At an average of 20 volunteers per event, over 650 volunteers have given their time to Connects Day over the last seven years.

Connects continues to evolve and to grow.

In February, YAPC, in partnership with the health promotion unit at the Department of Health and Social Services, offered a community kitchen in conjunction with Connects Day. Volunteers came together to cook shepherd’s pie, macaroni and cheese, and a variety of baked goods that were served at lunch. This initiative was so well received by guests and chefs alike that we plan to incorporate community kitchens into future Connects Days.

We have seen an increase in the number of young children and families attending Connects Days. In response to that shift, we

are hosting our first Family Connects Day on March 8 at the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre.

Family Connects will offer the regular core services plus activities/services focused on children. We’ll have a snack making table, craft table and games area. The Whitehorse library is bringing a pop-up library. And pizza will play a large role in the lunch menu.

Thank you to our funders over the years including the Community Development Fund, the Health Investment Fund, United Way, TD Canada Trust, City of Whitehorse Festival and Special Events Fund , PSAC and the Yukon Energy Corporation. Whitehorse Connects is also supported through individual donors, fundraising campaigns and partnerships with Jazz Yukon, 100 Women Who Care and Yukon Anti-Poverty Coalition events.

Connects continues to thrive and grow through the generous support and participation of so many individuals, organizations and businesses in our community. Thank you to all who have contributed to or participated in Connects Day as a volunteer, service provider, musician or guest. Our community is richer for it. Lives have been touched through it.

advocate an end to the occupation, a return to 1967 borders, and (most problematic) a right of return for Palestinian refugees displaced way back when the modern state of Israel was created in 1948. They believe that if Israel were to do so peace would somehow break out.

Call me skeptical. There are certain factions within the Palestinians that have never shown any interest in peace. Debates on who is to blame in prolonging the conflict often come down to a chicken-and-egg discussion about whether Palestinians are simply rebelling against an occupation or whether the occupation arose because of attacks against Israel. I think it’s a bit of both, but enough of the latter to preclude peace so long as more extreme factions amongst the Palestinians refuse to disavow intentional targeted attacks on Israeli civilians.

Having said that, I am loathe to so strongly impugn the motives of everyone who believe this to be the roadmap to peace as the Yukon Party and others have done. It is not as if there is nothing in the conduct of Israel that could provide a non-bigoted explanation for such passionate opposition.

One can be concerned about the amount of “collateral damage” being suffered by innocent Palestinian civilians in the course of Israel’s battle against militant factions. Most Palestinians are

not terrorists, and Israel has both a moral and legal obligation to do its best to ensure that innocent civilians are not killed in the process of defending itself. To note that Israel has, from time to time, failed to live up to that obligation is a fair and reasonable observation.

Moreover, the continued expansion of settlements into areas internationally recognized as being for the Palestinians under a future peace is simply inexcusable – something even the most pro-Israel western governments grudgingly acknowledge.

There is nothing inherently “anti-Semitic” in having these concerns. I share them. We should all be concerned about the welfare of innocent men, women and children living in horrible conditions caught in the crossfire of an intractable conflict that has been going on for generations.

Are some involved in the BDS movement motivated by antiSemitism? Absolutely. Anti-Semitism is a common phenomenon, and different people arrive at their views in different ways.

But casting all of those who support BDS as bigots because some are? This is the same type of blanket stereotyping that has gotten us in trouble in the past.

I can confidently say that many of the people I’ve encountered over the years who strongly and passionately support the Palestinian people lack a hateful bone

in their body, and can provide a reasoned defence of their views.

Perhaps more concerning than the decision to cast aspersions on those who support BDS, was the gratuitous notation at the end of the Yukon Party’s press release which states: “France outlawed the BDS movement in 2003 and Great Britain recently announced plans to become the second major European nation to take that step.”

This was the most perplexing part of the release. What purpose could possibly be served by pointing this out? What is the Yukon Party trying to say here?

When placed in the context of the rest of the release it would seem to be suggesting that such bans are a good thing. Is this something that the Yukon Party thinks Canada or the Yukon should emulate? We should hope not.

Agree or not, advocating for the boycott, divestment and sanctioning of a country involved in armed conflict is among the clearest of exercises in free expression, unquestionably protected by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The public government of this territory ought to be far more reluctant to level such a strong, blanket accusation against Canadian citizens exercising their rights.

Amending the snowmobile bylaw (by adding non-motorized trails, greenbelts and open spaces to its list of prohibited areas) would go a long way to ensuring the protection of our local environment and the enjoyment of those who prefer to use “nonmotorized” trails. Making it consistent with the ATV bylaw would reduce the confusion concerning trail use that is experienced by both non-motorized and motorized users and enhance clarity, which would improve the relationship between trail users.

Mr. Bagnell, we went to the Yukon Energy Corporation’s first public meeting about its resource plan last night. Amongst a lively debate, the CEO of Yukon Energy stated that he would love to develop a new market of space heating with renewable energy but territorial policy prevents Yukon Energy from doing it. The present territorial government is highly resistant to having the Yukon reduce its fossil fuel consumption.

The reason for their resistance is not due to any technological barriers as far as we know. JP recently co-authored a paper that modeled a 45-megawatt windfarm on Mount Sumanik and found that we could heat over 5,000 homes. We already spill enough water in our hydro system to “fuel” hundreds of electric cars. The North’s solar potential is immense. Getting Yukon off fossil fuels is not a technological problem, it is an ideological one.

Mr. Pasloski needs to save face with his Conservative backers by being resistant to change like Premier Brad Wall in Saskatchewan. While Premier Wall has a much larger problem of a provincial budget highly dependent on fossil fuels, the Yukon does not, so we have far more wiggle-room in that regard.

like B.C.’s, so we can start down the road to reducing our carbon footprint. We are not a large jurisdiction but we are leaders. Most of the packed room at the High Country Inn last night wanted Yukon Energy to be more aggressive in developing renewable energy to displace fossil fuel in the transportation and space heating sector. Over and over we heard that our territorial government is standing in the way of that happening. There is a territorial election coming, so until that time, we need the federal government to make a carbon tax as politically palatable to the territorial government as possible.

Like the fabulous $2 million that Minister Melanie Joly brought to our Arts and Culture organizations this past weekend, the Trudeau government can create a successful low-carbon future for Canadians by helping the North be a model of sustainability.

The Yukon is a perfect testing ground for a low-carbon future based on proper carbon pricing. Let us not have our present Yukon government stand in way.

That would also explain the appearance of the bow and arrow in so many Athabaskan myths.

The clincher, Wilson said, is that there are Siberian languages that seem to be related to the North American Athabaskan languages.

“There’s a suggestion that the word for ‘bow’ in Yeniseian (a Siberian language) is the same as the word for ‘arrow’ in Athabaskan, so there’s clearly a connection,” he said, adding that the Siberians seem to have at least one mythological story that’s very similar to the Athabaskans’.

Of course, all of this is subject to debate. Wilson said there is some genetic evidence to suggest that Asian males mixed with Athabaskans in the not-too-distant past. But it’s not conclusive.

And clues are being lost all the time, as more and more Athabaskan languages go extinct from lack of use. Already, much of Wilson’s linguistic research is based on records from the 1920s and 30s.

“Most of these languages are not spoken very much anymore, and most of these stories are not told very much anymore,” he said. “Most of them are critically

It’s estimated there are upwards of 50 Athabaskan languages, though many are spoken by fewer than 100 people. Chipewyan is one of the more widespread languages, and still has roughly 12,000 native speakers.

But Wilson said his research does more than illuminate the possible history of the Athabaskan languages.

He believes it’s also giving the lie to a pervasive stereotype about Athabaskan peoples.

“Athabaskans are stereotyped as being extremely primitive,” he said. Because Athabaskan peoples traditionally lived in less complex societies, he said, they were assumed to have borrowed their religion and folklore from other indigenous groups.

But in fact, Wilson said, the Athabaskans may have been the source of these stories, which then spread to other peoples.

“My argument is that we have been making all kinds of assumptions about what the original Athabaskan culture was … not based on any real evidence,” he said.

“Don’t assume… that the Athabaskans were a blank slate onto which other cultures painted a mirror of themselves. It ain’t necessarily so.”

Wilson will be speaking via Skype at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 5 at the Beringia Centre.

Canada in 2050: land of climate change extremes at current emissions levels Bob Weber Canadian Press

EDMONTON anada is a land of extremes, from car-freezing cold to crop-searing heat and drenching rains to drought.

But you ainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t seen nothinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; yet.

By 2050 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; within the life expectancy of most Canadians â&#x20AC;&#x201C; scientists say that if current emissions levels remain unchanged, climate change will be well established.

It will be warmer: a crosscountry summertime average of about two degrees. It will be wetter, mostly, by about five per cent.

Those modest figures may sound good to a country that describes summer as four months of poor sledding. And global warming will bring perks, such as the chance to grow different or more abundant crops.

But gentle averages, however, are not what Canadians will experience. Climate change will feed into Canadaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s already considerable natural variability â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and not to smooth it out. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The kind of changes one anticipates are more likelihood of drought or more likelihood of wet periods,â&#x20AC;? said Greg Flato, Environment Canadaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top climate modeller. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If you think about temperature extremes, as the climate warms the likelihood of getting a very hot extreme becomes greater; the likelihood of getting a very cold extreme becomes less likely.â&#x20AC;?

The extra rain, for example, is unlikely to fall in a gentle spring shower. Look for it in great flooding downpours or winter rains that drain before they can nourish crops.

John Pomeroy, a Canada research chair in water resources at the University of Saskatchewan, points out the amount of water that falls as snow has already declined by 50 per cent on the Prairies. The number of multiday rains has increased by the same amount. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Farmers need to adapt to that, to being inundated and flooded quite a bit,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Some restaurant servers disdain making change

MANNERS DEAR MISS MANNERS: I’ve noticed a trend when paying with cash at restaurants. It used to be that if my meal cost $16.32 and I paid with a $20 bill, I would receive $3.68 back from the server.

Last week when I paid a $16.32 bill with a $20 bill, I was given only $3 in change by my server, leaving me 68 cents short.

My friend told me that servers are now doing this to save time in processing cash payments, and so they don’t have to carry around a lot of change in their apron pockets.

In a way I can see how this makes sense, but I also feel a bit miffed in getting shortchanged.

Each time this has happened, I’ve found myself wanting to ask the server for my correct change, but then refrained from doing so after thinking it would appear silly or impolite to get into an argument over such a small amount of money.

Is this method of shortchanging customers the new normal that I should graciously accept? If not, what would be the best way for me to address this issue with my server?

GENTLE READER: That a pickpocket finds his profession more convenient than remembering to bring his own wallet is no defense. Servers who cheat you by 68 cents should feel lucky to find their tips reduced only by that amount.

Miss Manners sees nothing embarrassing about asking for your proper change. But you could also ask the server’s boss, who probably does not authorize shortchanging the customers, whether such is the restaurant’s policy.

DEAR MISS MANNERS: My boyfriend of six years and I have been engaged for a year now and are officially tying the knot. Now that we’ve come to the stage of creating and ordering invitations, we have to address an issue: His family is always late.

There’s hardly a punctual person among the bunch. For his cousin’s wedding two years ago, the bride and groom lied about the start time of the ceremony on the invitations just to ensure that everyone would be there on time. The invites said it started at

3 p.m., but it didn’t actually begin until 4 p.m.

The trick worked, as some family invariably showed up past the 3 p.m. start time, which still made them perfectly on time for the actual 4 p.m. event.

What can my fiance and I do or say (either via the invitations we mail or via in-person conversations) to get these people to show up?

GENTLE READER: Without objecting to your fiance’s cousin’s solution, Miss Manners questions its long-term effectiveness. Do you plan to pad holiday dinner times as well? You will acquire a reputation for starting everything late, thus encouraging others to adjust their arrival times back even more.

The cocktail hour was invented to solve the problem that, even with good intentions, no group of people all arrive at the same time.

By all means, have your fiance speak with your relatives about arriving on time. But assuming you would prefer not to have the punctual relatives drunk before the ceremony, you might leave a few empty pews at the back of the church for late arrivals.

DEAR MISS MANNERS: Is it OK to whisper when other people are in the room?

GENTLE READER: Yes, if you

are under 6 and are asking your mother to find a bathroom for you.

DEAR MISS MANNERS: I have friends over for dinner weekly. I like to cook and they like to eat.

My food is good, we have fun, and we always go down the street to the local pub after dinner.

A mutual friend we know from the pub asks detailed questions about what we just had for dinner, and wishes aloud that she can join us next time.

The problem lies in what she won’t eat. Each time we talk about our dinner, she reminds me that I can’t serve X and don’t use Y, because “I don’t like those things.”

I always laugh and say, “Well, you can’t come then.”

She vows to “pick out” the things she doesn’t like and not to say a word when there’s something she won’t eat.

I don’t buy it for a minute.

Miss Manners, I like to cook for people who like to eat, and the current crop of dinner guests are great, adventurous eaters. How do I politely tell our friend that she’s not invited, as I will cook whatever I want, not cater to her needs?

GENTLE READER: Your friend should not be constantly inviting herself over and then dictating

the parameters of the meal. But Miss Manners cannot help but feel that you are baiting her by prolonging the conversation.

She is not the person with whom you should be discussing your menus. If she is a friend otherwise, counter by inviting her to an event that doesn’t involve food. Or find another pub for your after-dinner drinks.

DEAR MISS MANNERS: At most retail establishments, including banks, I am constantly being asked if I would like to open a new credit card. I always say, “No, thank you.”

The follow-up question is always, “May I ask why?”

I will flatly tell them, “No, you may not,” which usually leads to belligerent attitudes from the workers, demanding to know why. I find this terribly rude.

Am I wrong, that when I tell someone “No, thank you” to an offer, that is the end of the conversation?

GENTLE READER: It should be, of course. But that is no excuse for you to be rude in return to someone whose employer has demanded that this script be followed.

However, you can be firm.

As the follow-up response, Miss Manners suggests, “Because I choose not to.”

T

he Vanier Crusaders have now ruled Yukon senior boys basketball for half a decade.

The Crusaders bagged their fifth straight title with a 73-53 win over the Porter Creek Rams in the final of the Yukon Basketball Championships on Thursday at F.H. Collins Secondary.

“The five in a row wasn’t a focus at all,” said Crusaders head coach Sean McCarron. “I know from enough years of coaching you have to go game by game. But if you push the process and the preparation, you hope it’ll work out in the end.

“Most of my team will be back next year, plus a great group of Grade 9s and 10s I’m going to pull up, so the future is looking bright.”

While it was the school’s fifth title in a row, it was the same for Crusaders co-captain RJ Siosan.

The Grade 12 player has been on a champion team every year of his high school career – twice as a junior and now three as a senior.

Fittingly, Siosan was named championship MVP following what was his final high school game.

“Everybody did their job; we

played well,” said Siosan. “At first we were slow a bit, but we kept the game going and then our flow was back.

“Our teamwork was big. At the start of the season some of us were in the Philippines, but when they came back our flow was great. Our teamwork was always there.”

The Crusaders, who went undefeated at the championship, also won the Super Hoops title in the Whitehorse high school league.

The team’s only loss of the season (not counting a tournament in Skagway) was the season opener to the Rams. It was that loss that put the Crusaders on the path to greatness, said McCarron.

“That game was a wake-up call for us to focus on what we do well and try to minimize our weaknesses,” said McCarron. “They shot better than we did, they rebounded better than we did, but we do have speed. So we played to our strength: we run the ball, we trap, we hustle.”

The first five minutes of the final were fairly close before Vanier went on a 10-point run for a 16-7 lead. The Crusaders took a 37-25 lead into half but only outscored the Rams by one point in the third.

“It was close for three quarters,

we had it down to eight points.

They are a very good team and just kept coming, kept attacking,” said Rams head coach Logan Wedge.

“Any time we had one or two bad minutes, they’d take advantage of that. That’s how dangerous they are. They can take advantage every time you have a little slip.”

Siosan led the game in scoring with 23 points while All-Star teammate Dave Mindanao was close behind with 18.

Chris Nerysoo was the Rams’ top scorer with 12. Cassel Shilz and All-Star Christian Ouimet both had 11 for Porter Creek.

As for the MVP nod… “I thank God for this,” said Siosan. “I couldn’t have done this without my friends, my family, the fans for all their support. My coaches – Mr. McCarron, (Basketball Yukon’s) Tim Brady – everybody. My teammates.”

William Kleedehn wins Cinnamon Bun Run Tom Patrick News Reporter

C

arcross musher William Kleedehn can’t recall the last time the team he ran over the weekend was beat.

It has certainly been a while.

Kleedehn and the team from Crispin Studer’s Pika Kennel notched another victory in the 2016 Cinnamon Bun Run over the weekend.

“Basically I run dogs that Crispin Studer owns, but it’s all my old bloodlines – dogs out of my old kennel that he took over,” said Kleedehn.

“In middle distance races over the last few years it has been proven that the dogs I was raising for decades are just better. Simple as that.

“I don’t know the last time Crispin or me or anybody who ran those dogs was beaten in the Yukon.”

Kleedehn won the 140-mile (225-kilometre) race from the Takhini Hot Pools to Braeburn and back with a runtime of 12 hours and two minutes.

The 56-year-old won the race – back when it was called the River Runner – two years ago as well. In that race he lost his team a couple miles from the end and crossed the finish on foot about 20 minutes behind the team.

This year’s run wasn’t a heck of a lot smoother for Kleedehn.

“I had some challenges on the trail. At one point I crashed out and actually lost the team, which I don’t really want to admit, but I did,” said Kleedehn. “But the sled bounced into some willows and stopped the team. There was no damage to the sled or harm to the dogs.

“I just ran after them as good as I could, pulled the sled out of there and away we went.”

Shallow Bay’s Gerry Willomitzer placed second, up from 10th last year, with a time of 12:18.

Fox Lake’s Martine LeLevier claimed third at 12:54 and Nathaniel Hamlyn came fourth for a second year in a row at 13:54.

Studer, who has taken this season off from racing, also went undefeated last year. He won the Carbon Hill Sled Dog Race, the Silver Sled in Haines Junction and the Percy DeWolfe Memorial Mail Race in Dawson City.

The Pika dogs were also winners at the Carbon Hill Sled Dog Race in January. At that race Kleedehn’s girlfriend Carolin Leipert, who had only ever raced once before, rode the dogs to first in the 30-mile sled division.

“When I enter a sled dog race, then you know for sure it’s a sled dog race, not a musher’s race,” said Kleedehn, who has twice placed second in the Yukon Quest. “It’s all about the dogs.”

In addition to the 11 sled teams, the Saturday-to-Sunday race included two skijorers.

Whitehorse’s Magnus Kaltenborn placed first at 14:58, ahead of Golden Horn’s Cynthia Corriveau at 16:34.

“I was basically happy I wasn’t one of the two skijorers – that’s what I was thinking,” said Kleedehn.

“Those guys are gladiators. I would never do that.”

Disc golfers raise $1,220 for Whitehorse Food Bank with tourney Tom Patrick News Reporter

W

hitehorse disc golfers went about 700 over par on Sunday.

In the inaugural WDGA Rendezvous Ice Bowl, members of the Whitehorse Disc Golf Association raised $1,220 for the Whitehorse Food Bank, far exceeding the original goal of $500.

“We had excellent support from the volunteers and the people who were willing to pledge. It was really great to see,” said WDGA president Ryan Norquay. “We exceeded our goal by more than double. We haven’t weighed the food (donations) yet, but it feels like a good 60, 70 pounds worth.”

Sunday’s tournament in Whitehorse was one of over 200 Ice Bowls that took place across North America over the last two months – all with the objective of feeding the needy.

The Ice Bowl initiative was first started by the Kansas City Flying Disc Club out of Missouri in 1996. Since then it has grown to include clubs across North America and has raised over $3.1 million (not counting this year). Last year 238 Ice Bowl events took place, raising a record $344,184.

WDGA’s Ice Bowl, which was

the most northern of them all, raised more than some larger clubs down south. They pulled that off despite having only seven golfers out on the temporary Solstice Disc Golf Course neat Yukon College.

“I didn’t expect too many to come out – there aren’t too many people who disc golf during the winter – but for the small amount of people I feel we raised a large amount of money,” said Whitehorse’s Alan Hill.

“Today was great. It was a fundraiser so it wasn’t about playing, it was about raising money and food for the Whitehorse Food Bank.”

While the tournament was more about charity than competition, it should be noted Hill carded a 60 to end the 20-hole round on par and win his first tournament.

Sheldon Casselman placed second, one stroke back from Hill, and Ben Monkman came third with a 66.

Hill finished the “front 10” two over, four strokes behind Casselman, who had a bit of bad luck on the back.

“Sheldon played really well,” said Hill. “It was one hole for Sheldon – I think hole 8 – he carded a five because he got a really unfortunate slide. His disc landed upside down on his approach shot and slid to the bottom of the hill … That double

“It was exciting golf, for sure,” said Norquay. “It was nice to see the scores go back and fourth between the two rounds.

“It was great everyone had a belly full of chili. The chili cookoff went just amazing. We had three volunteers produce a big crockpot of chili and we were able to award a trophy for the best chili. We’re looking forward to see that as a future tradition.”

Yukon medieval combat team duels to eight medals in Montreal Tom Patrick News Reporter

M

embers of Yukon’s Company of the White Wolf chopped through the competition the weekend before last in Montreal.

Yukoners won a coffer of medals at the fifth annual Medieval Combat Arts Tournament, an event that saw teams from around the world compete in authentic pre-17th century European armour with real weapons (though the swords have blunted edges and dulled tips for obvious safety reasons).

It was the Company of the White Wolf’s first tournament outside the territory, “so it was really important for us to make a good showing,” said Whitehorse’s Land Pearson. “There were people there who represented Canada, went to an event called the Dynamo Cup, which is one of the hardest five-on-five competitions. Guys from that team were saying we brought a lot more skill and people than they expected. We weren’t any slouches out there and they were really impressed by the quality of our armour as well.”

The Company of the White Wolf (CWW) was one of the larger teams at the event with 14 representing the territory. They collected eight medals, including one gold.

In an instance of sibling rivalry gone medieval, Pearson defeated his older brother Lake for gold in the men’s sword and shield, in which both competitors are armed with a short one-handed sword and a shield.

Duelists score points by striking blows, disarming their adversary and knocking them down.

“Last summer we had our first tournament here (in Yukon) and he and I met in the finals there,” said Land, 32, who won that final as well. “I really think he’s technically a better fighter, but I seem to be able to take it from him when it counts.

“We’re developing a rivalry that’s going to grow more.”

With the loss to his brother in the final, Lake took the silver.

As champion, Land will likely be considered for Canada’s team at the International Medieval Combat Federation’s world championship this May in Portugal.

“This was seen a bit as nationals and a place for people to be selected to represent Canada in Europe this year at world championships,” said Land.

“It sounds like my name will be put forward to have that opportunity. Canada hasn’t actually gone to world championships yet. Quebec has been attending for several years, but this will be the first time as Canada going. So it’s kind of exciting and important to get our members onto that team – the first Canadian team.”

While Land pocketed the only gold for CWW, teammate Shauna L. Heasley fought to the most medals. Heasley won three bronze and

She took bronze in women’s polearm – a knife or axe blade fitted on a long pole – while teammate Nicole Grove won silver.

Heasley also claimed bronze in the women’s sword and shield, as well as the women’s longsword – a double-edged sword with a large handle for two-handed use.

Heasley and Grove also teamed up with a Quebec “mercenary” to win silver in the three-on-three duel.

CWW’s Cody Richards won silver in the men’s polearm, a couple spots ahead of teammate Don Hornby in fourth.

Yukon’s Steven Pearson just missed out on a medal, placing fourth in the men’s longsword.

The sport is super old but the CWW is relatively new. The CWW along with the sport’s governing body, the Yukon Medieval Combat Group (YMCG), stemmed from a presentation at the 2014 Yukomicon – Yukon’s first comic book convention. At Yukomicon CWW captain Jose Martinez-Amoedo, who has represented Spain at

the world championships, gave a presentation on the sport and it all snowballed from there.

“That’s where our club grew from,” said Land, who is president of the YMCG. “He gave his presentation and a few of us followed him around like puppies the rest of the day to hear more about it and it just sprang up from there.

“Most of us didn’t start getting armour until last summer. So it’s been around for a year and a half, but really only getting into armour the last six or eight months.”

A competitor’s armour can cost anywhere from $1,500 to $15,000.

It’s the real McCoy, not a prop from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

“Your armour and weapons do need to be authentic,” said Land.

“When you go to a world championships, you’re allowed to have a time frame and then 25 years on either side for what your armour can all be. You can’t be wearing a 10th century Viking helmet with 15th or 16th century renaissance armour. Anything that you’re wearing, you have to be able to give evidence it was true – proof from a

he WRHL Sourdough Rendezvous Hockey Tournament wrapped up with three division finals at Takhini Arena on Sunday.

None of them were particularly close.

All three finals finished with a spread of four or more goals.

The T.A. Firth Rangers defeated the Senior Selkirk Bears 6-1 to win the men’s A division and pocket a cool $1,100 in cash.

“We just came together, had stellar goaltending. You start from the back and move for-

ward,” said Rangers captain Clayton Thomas. “All four D played good, read the plays the way they needed to, and the forwards put it in when they needed.”

The Rangers are sure glad goalie Matt King hasn’t hung up his skates. King – who is the general manager of the Whitehorse Huskies AA team – allowed just four goals in four games at the tournament.

“I thought he retired,” said Thomas. “You can’t shoot from too far out on Matty; he’s just too fast.

“I don’t know what that retirement talk was about. He gets better with age like a fine wine.”

The Rangers stormed out to a 5-0 lead in the first period with three goals from forward Ryan Gleason. Gleason, who also plays for the Whitehorse Huskies, is the team’s top scorer in the Whitehorse Rec Hockey League where they are currently in second place in the A division.

“It’s good to see Gleason going,” said Thomas. “When he’s flying, we’re winning.”

The Rangers’ other goals in the final came from Clint Teichroeb with two and Thomas, who also had an assist. Darcy Carlick and Simon Nugent each had two assists.

Morris Morrison prevented the shutout with a goal for the

Bears.

The Rangers went undefeated in the tournament but did have a 2-2 tie against the U-16 Midget Mustangs Yukon rep team in the round robin.

“They are some of the smartest, most mature group of midgets I’ve ever played against,” said Thomas. “They make nice passes and don’t make stupid plays and they’re tough to play.”

The Lead Dawgs led the way in the women’s division. The Dawgs claimed the title with a 5-0 shutout win over Yukon’s Arctic Winter Games female team in the final.

Dawgs’ Katie Vanderstelt scored a hat trick and logged an assist in the final. Tamara Greek and Sue Hamilton also found the back of the net.

CRB Nighthawks flew to first in the men’s B division – the largest with 10 teams – with a 5-1 win over the KDFN North Stars in the final.

Nighthawks’ Kevin Johnstone notched two goals. The other goals came from a real skookum effort, with Mike Skookum, George Skookum and Glen Skookum all scoring.

On February 23 we lost our beloved Mother in a tragic accident. She was well known to many around town as she has lived here since 1968. People would always know her by sight if not by name.

She will be remembered for her kindness and compassion, her generosity, creativity and sharp British wit. What she will be remembered for most was her unwavering strength and resilience.

Maggie loved her children, Patrick and Shannon, and her Grandchildren, Bailey (8) and Brody (4) more than anything.

She always had a photo album ready to show what a proud Nana she was. We had the best Mother and Nana that anyone could hope to have.

A Celebration of life will be held at Mount McIntyre Recreation Centre, Grey Mountain Room, on Saturday March 5th at 2pm.

This will be a celebration for an amazing woman and we welcome anyone with a story or memory about their time with Maggie to share it with us.

We would like to thank all our friends and the community for the overwhelming and generous amount of support that we have received during this difficult time.
