A man who Abbotsford Police say is connected to the Townline Hill conflict has been arrested in Edmonton after police intercepted a shipment of cocaine that was

allegedly concealed in a hidden compartment in his vehicle.

Rajwinder Singh Gandham, 27, was arrested by ALERT (Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams) Edmonton on Feb. 26. The RCMP roving traffic unit assisted with the arrest, pulling over Gandham’s Jeep SUV

as it was travelling into Edmonton on the Yellowhead Highway.

Police say Gandham’s SUV was equipped with a hydraulic hidden compartment containing five kilograms of cocaine with an estimated street value of $500,000.

Statistics released this week by the Abbotsford Police Department provide some surprising information about impaired drivers, says Const.

Ian MacDonald.

MacDonald said police looked at a 28-day period, running from Jan. 23 to Feb. 19, and found that of the 44 impaired drivers caught during that time, one-quarter of the infractions took place between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Many of these drivers were in or near school zones when pulled over by police, MacDonald added.

In one case, an impaired

woman in her 40s was caught driving 80 km/h through a school zone at 1 p.m.

MacDonald said if this wasn’t alarming enough, the woman was oblivious that police were attempting to pull her over.

“It took quite awhile to get her attention, despite the lights and sirens,” he said.

When she was stopped, an open bottle of rum was found in her car. The woman was given a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition.

MacDonald said enforcement during the 28-day period was conducted at all hours of the day and night, and the stats are an eye-opener.

“Impaired driving is a 24/7 issue, and it puts us all at risk,” he said.

Staff Sgt. Pierre Blais of ALERT Edmonton said the investigation demonstrates the “borderless nature” of organized crime. He said such a matter is “very complex” and takes many resources.

“But in a short order, due to the assistance of all our police services – the RCMP, Abbotsford Police Department, Vancouver Police Department and the joint forces operation that we have here in ALERT – it really does give us the proper tools to effectively combat organized crime,” Blais said.

ALERT is funded by the Alberta government and includes members of police agencies in Calgary, Edmonton, Lethbridge and Medicine Hat, as well as the Alberta Sheriffs and RCMP.

Abbotsford and Mission still have the highest share of children in Canada.

The 2015 data from Statistics Canada show that the Abbotsford-Mission census metropolitan area (CMA) has 18 per cent of its popu-

lation aged 0-14.

The higher share of children in Abbotsford and Mission has been attributed to the municipalities’ historically younger, family-oriented community.

The population growth rate in the CMA is 1.4 per cent, higher than the Canadian rate which is 0.9 per cent.

Economic development programs cost $89,000 Tyler OLSEN Abbotsford News

The City of Abbotsford spent a combined $89,000 on its international marketing strategy, an economic development department website, and a geo-map tool that aims to connect developers and companies with land. That total includes $25,000 obtained by the city from a federal grant.

The figures weren’t available in the fall, when the city launched the site, the tool, and a strategy looking how to make the city more attractive to international investors.

The interactive CAED website was created

by a Langley company and features information touting Abbotsford as a great place to live and work, and highlights the city’s programs to encourage business growth. It cost $26,000. The site can be found at caed. abbotsford.ca.

The geo-map tool, which cost an additional $13,000, combines property listings and demographic data with an interactive map of the city, so anyone looking for a new business site can view the best locations, along with an array of mapped data about consumer spending, labour force distribution, household income and more. It can be found at abbotsfordsitefinder.ca.

The international marketing strategy was prepared by international firm Development Counsellors International. It said Abbotsford must challenge a reputation for being “unfriendly” to business and a lack of global awareness. The strategy suggested rebranding Abbotsford International Airport as Abbotsford-Metro Vancouver International Airport, and sprucing up the terminal. The strategy cost a total of $50,000, although half that amount came from a federal program designed to increase foreign investment in Canadian communities.

The report also proposed a regional

public relations campaign, and recommended branding local agricultural products as “Made in Abby: Abbotsford, British Columbia.”

The report said: “Such a small effort – combined with its catchy, edgy ‘Abby’ reference – has the potential to create awareness throughout the agricultural world of the diversity and quality of the Fraser Valley’s top city.”

In a written statement to The News, Mayor Henry Braun said the city’s tools “form an important foundation as we continue to build capacity behind our economic development initiatives.”

The price of a home in Abbotsford continues to skyrocket, with January’s record-setting figures eclipsed by those seen in February.

The benchmark price of a single-family home in the city reached $531,400 last month, according to the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board (FVREB).

That is an increase of 4.4 per cent just from January.

In the last 60 days, the typical single-family house in Abbotsford has seen its value rise by an astounding $36,600, according to the FVREB.

Similar numbers are being seen across the region, which recorded a record number of sales in February.

With 2,387 sales in February, the month beat the 10-year average for the month by 46 per cent and outpaced the 24-year-old existing record. “In my 25 years of real estate, I have never seen such consistent demand for housing in the Fraser Valley,� said Charles Wiebe, president of the FVREB. “While it’s certainly encouraging to see such con-

Pipeline deals come too cheap While it comes as no surprise that Abbotsford, along with the rest of B.C., is easily willing to sell out, it does come as a surprise to sell out so cheaply.

Why is it that when we have genuine concerns about health, environment and very real negative outcomes that could arise – for example, spills and contamination that has happened already – our city leaders, provincial leaders and federal leaders only look to increase their monetary gain, or their golf game?

The least these leaders could do is create sustainable

local infrastructure, create more jobs, or even create a viable option for helping our local less fortunate individuals.

The local young population has about a five to 10 per cent chance in their entire life to earn enough to own their own home, and many local single parents struggle to feed the developing minds that are our future, but instead we decide golf club houses are more important.

The revenue that would be created by such an improvement would be similar to the Abbotsford Centre bust. What

is the percentage of locals who actually attend the already existent golf club? What percentage will the rates increase by? How many fewer people will take part in this activity afterwards?

Would it not be wiser to have a more sustainable way of living? And who better to help pay for it than these fat cats making all the money off of our Canadian resources?

Health care cuts? Income tax increase? Fewer jobs? Higher home prices? A Canadian dollar so reliant on oil? Just doesn’t make sense.

Expansion at city-owned cemetery Mount Lehman site to re-open in April Construction is underway to double the size of the City of Abbotsford’s Mount Lehman cemetery.

In addition to increasing the number of burial plots, the improvements will see the building of a columbarium for funeral urns, with two more to be constructed later. A scattering garden, decorative fencing and on-street parking are also being added.

The cemetery – located on Taylor Road in the city’s far northwestern corner – will be closed during construction, with completion of the project anticipated in mid-April. Budget for the project is $319,000.

In 2007, a city report estimated that Abbotsford’s cemeteries could accommodate needs for 30 years.

Nine years later, the city says it should still have enough capacity for the next 25 to 30 years, thanks to the Mount Lehman cemetery expansion, added efficiencies in the systems, and shifts in burial practices.

An Abbotsford boy whose birthday wish is to raise $9,000 for the Starfish Pack Program is onethird of the way there.

Chase, 6, has so far raised more than $3,000 for the cause, and is holding a fundraising event this Sunday, March 6 to boost that amount.

“Chase’s Lemonade Stand and Bottle Drive” runs from noon to 5 p.m. at Godson Elementary (33130 Bevan Ave.). Chase’s goal is to fill a fourlitre jug with dimes.

The event includes a Guess the Beans contest and an appearance at 3 p.m. by the magician The Great Gordini. Empty bottles and cans can also be dropped off during the event.

In lieu of receiving gifts for his birthday on March 22, Chase initially set a goal to raise $50 for the Starfish Pack Program, which provides backpacks filled with food for school-aged kids to take home on the weekends.

The program currently serves 263 children in Abbotsford at a cost of $525 per child for a school year.

Chase and his mom, Eliza Miller, made a poster to promote his plan and posted it on Facebook.

Within 48 hours, $534 had been collected, and Chase hiked his goal to $9,000 – enough to fill 17 backpacks.

The donations have continued to come in, and Miller said she and Chase are appreciative of all the support.

“Chase tells me every day how lucky he is to have such amazing people on this Earth,” she said.

Yale students raise $23,070 for Canuck Place Canuck Place got a big assist from the Yale Secondary Leadership program on Friday night.

The program held its annual Live to Give fundraiser overnight on Friday, and raised $23,270 for Canuck Place in Abbotsford.

The Fraser Valley Express launched last spring.

FVX revenue exceeds expectations The Fraser Valley Express bus that connects Chilliwack and Abbotsford with Langley and the Translink system outperformed expectations through its first nine months, according to a review of the service for the Fraser Valley Regional District.

The review found ridership of the bus has doubled since service began last April, with revenue expected to exceed the $23,000-per-month target.

“Recent financial information is supporting a higher average per month which will help to hold or reduce future tax requisitions needed to support this service,” the report said. BC Transit funds 47 per cent of the service, with Abbotsford and Chilliwack covering the rest of the cost. The first year of the service had been expected to cost Abbotsford $411,897.

The service and ridership review also identified possible changes for the future, including expansion of service to Sundays and holidays, although BC Transit hasn’t recommended any tweaks, given the success of the bus so far.

“To make significant changes now could interfere with the momentum that appears to be in place,” the report said.

A large mixed-media art piece designed to bring together women who might not otherwise meet will be unveiled Saturday at The Reach Gallery Museum (32388 Veterans Way).

Artist Linda Klippenstein worked with designer Valdene McCutcheon to come up with the multi-canvas piece, titled We Gather Together, which measures five feet by 15 feet and is emblematic of the “city in the country.”

The country provides the backdrop – mountains that give way to rolling hills, forest and farmland – all made from bits of torn paper, quilted fabric pieces and cedar bark.

At its centre are two hands coming together over the city, which forms the heart of the piece.

As one gets closer, one sees hundreds of people coming together from across the landscape.

Over the course of several months, over 80 women pasted more than 60,000 pieces of torn

paper to the canvas, bringing the landscape to life.

They were women of all ages and abilities, of all vocations or none, of different cultures and ethnicities, of wealth and poverty, from urban and rural locations in the Fraser Valley.

They sat side by side, week after week, discovering things about each other, exploring different world views, and expanding their circles of friendship.

The piece opens during International Women’s Day activities on Saturday and will be displayed at The Reach for two weeks, before moving to its permanent home at Abbotsford Community Services.

Prospera Credit Union supported the cost of the project, which included having 540 two-inch silhouettes of people professionally laser cut out of black acrylic plastic.

Couple films Faster data. pilot for home Lisa and Rob Brandsma have teamed up to film a teleSubmitted vision pilot, which will air this weekend.

reno show An Abbotsford husband and wife renovation team have filmed a pilot episode for a possible new series on HGTV (Home and Garden Television).

The episode featuring Rob and Lisa Brandsma airs Saturday, March 5 at 8 p.m. and will be repeated on March 8, 11 and 12.

The show, called Forever Home, was filmed last July in Abbotsford and involves the Brandsmas showing three potential homes to clients and having them pick one for the couple to renovate and make their “forever home.”

If the pilot episode receives a good response, HGTV will give the green light to start filming a series.

The venture began in January 2015, when Rob and Lisa were contacted by a production company from Toronto that was looking for a husband and wife renovation/design team for a show idea they wanted to pitch to HGTV (and other networks).

The couple, who have three children, run Brandsma Reno and Designs, and the production company found them through an online search.

After the Brandsmas sent some video of themselves and some interviews were conducted, the company compiled a short video clip – called a “sizzle reel” – which was pitched to HGTV Canada.

HGTV liked it enough to fund the pilot episode.

Rob and Lisa have been operating their renovation business since January 2010.

They first met 16 years ago when they were both working at an Abbotsford restaurant. They bought their first house – a rancher – two weeks after getting engaged, and gutted it to make it more livable after they got married.

They started flipping houses a few years later.

“We would buy a house, live in it a few years, renovate and update it, and sell it and move into our next house,” Rob said.

Rob’s background is in drafting and design, while Lisa has a passion for design, decor and painting.

“Lisa was 12 when she selected the paint colour and painted her bedroom on her own,” Rob said.

Lisa also runs a side business, TigerLily Furniture, and likes to hunt for vintage and antique items to restore, refurbish and resell at local markets.

The couple said they are “thrilled and excited” to have filmed the pilot episode and the potential for it to become a series.

In a film to be screened at the University of the Fraser Valley Abbotsford campus on March 7, attendees will have a chance to see and hear six former heads of Israel’s internal security service reflect candidly on the morality of torture and terrorism, arrests and assassinations.

The Academy Award-nominated film The Gatekeepers is the third in a series of four films about Palestine being screened at UFV this semester.

A new radio show featuring the Fraser Valley Atheists, Skeptics and Humanists (FVASH) begins Sunday, March 6 on CIVL 101.7 FM. FVASH has previously hosted lectures at University of the Fraser Valley, built homeless shelters and adopted a local park.

Cascadia Wind Ensemble performs The Cascadia Wind Ensemble presents a concert titled Carnival on Sunday, March 6 at 2 p.m. at Matsqui Centennial Auditorium (32315 South Fraser Way).

The concert will be conducted by founder Shannon Goldsmith, a French horn performer who plays with both the Fraser Valley Symphony in Abbotsford and the Chilliwack Municipal Orchestra in Chilliwack.

The Cascadia Wind Ensemble draws performers from Abbotsford, Langley, Chilliwack, Mission, Agassiz and Mt. Vernon, Wash.

Each member drives to a weekly rehearsal at W. J. Mouat Secondary in Abbotsford.

The Carnival concert features Dr. Edward Lewis on cornet as the guest soloist performing Jean-Baptiste Arban’s virtuosic composition The Carnival of Venice.

‘Canes win league title

The Pilots and the Outlaws are set to face off starting tonight (Friday) in round two of the PJHL playoffs.

The Abbotsford Magnuson Ford U13 Hurricanes girls soccer team is sitting pretty heading into the Coastal Cup final this weekend.

The Hurricanes, playing in the BC Coastal Girls Soccer League, fin-

ished third overall out of 10 teams in the eastern division of regular season play earlier this year.

In round robin league championship play, the girls played equal-standing teams

from the three other districts and rose to the challenge to finish first overall in round robin play.

The Hurricanes ended the season with a 2-0 win over Langley and a 1-1 draw with Surrey

A familiar foe stands in the way of the Abbotsford Pilots in their quest for a Pacific Junior Hockey League championship.

The Pilots learned on Saturday night that they will be matched up against their rival Mission City Outlaws in the Harold Brittain conference final, which gets underway on Friday night in Abbotsford.

Abbotsford and Mission met six times in the regular season, with each team winning three.

The Pilots will be well rested, having disposed of the Aldergrove Kodiaks in six games following a 5-1 win on Feb. 24.

Abbotsford had strong opening-round performances from forwards Mitchell Plevy and Hayden Guilderson, along with defender Devon Becker, who all scored six points against the Kodiaks. Pilots forward Jackson Waniek

had a team-high four goals in the six-game series.

The series kicks off in Abbotsford on Friday at 7:30 p.m., with game two at the Mission Leisure Centre on Saturday at 6:45 p.m. Game three will also be in Mission on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Game four returns to Abbotsford, while games five and seven, if necessary, will be in Mission.

The winner receives the Harold Brittain conference title, and will then play the winner of the Tom Shaw conference final, which pits the Delta Ice Hawks against the Grandview Steelers.

For the first time in school history, the Bateman Timberwolves can raise a basketball banner.

The Timberwolves Grade 9 girls basketball team earned provincial glory in Kelowna on Sunday, beating the St. Thomas Aquinas Fighting Saints 46-44.

Bateman opened the tournament with a 50-23 win over the Kelowna Christian Knights on Feb. 25, and wins over the Dr. Knox Falcons (59-53) and the Kelowna Lake Okanagan Cougars (43-40) on Saturday.

Head coach Dan Village said it was a long process to build this team into champion calibre.

“They were very successful in Grade 8 and we put together a spring and summer league team playing against girls from the year ahead,” he said. “Honestly, we got creamed some of the games but kept many competitive and the girls just got better and better. That experience against older girls paid off for us.”

www.capitalcorefinancial.com “I had no idea my life would be impacted so profoundly”, recalls Marissa Cepelinski, an ultra runner and new board member of Run for Water. “I was holding this little girl’s hand in Ethiopia when it hit me that the money I raised was going to change her life forever.” Cepelinski had joined 15 other runners from the Lower Mainland on a trip to Ethiopia to visit the remote village of Hidri where they collectively raised more than $100,000 to dig a clean water well and a build a new school.

Marissa first encountered Run for Water four years ago when a friend of hers invited her to run the 55km Ultra Marathon. This noncompetitive team event follows the trail system from Chilliwack to Abbotsford with the goal of raising money for clean water.

“I have done many other running events but there is something unique about the Run for Water Ultra experience. It was my opportunity to combine my love for running with my passion to give back,” Cepelinski explains.

Cepelinski, recalls of that life changing event, “when I was walking for water I stopped and looked at this girl and realized that for only $35 I could change her life forever and give her a chance through

education I knew right then that I had a responsibility to respond to what I had seen.”

Marissa is the co-founder of Capital Core Financial and with a company goal to redirect one billion dollars from CRA towards the non-profit, she is on a mission to help people implement charitable giving into their financial plan. She is excited to raise thousands of dollars this year for clean water projects in Ethiopia.

Marissa was asked to join the Run for Water board when she returned from the trip. “I feel so lucky to be working with an organization like Run for Water . I get to combine so many of my life passions.”

The Western regional championships for the real-life adaptation of Quidditch, the wizarding world’s favourite sport, were held at Abbotsford Senior Secondary turf field on the weekend, featuring teams from Vancouver, Alberta, Victoria, Burnaby and Calgary.

Quidditch players try to throw a quaffle, which is a volleyball, through any one of three hoops on poles on either side of the field for ten points a goal. The game ends after either team captures the golden snitch — which in the movies, is an evasive, walnut-sized ball with wings.

Harry Potter’s first game saw him fly at incredible speeds around the pitch, capturing the snitch after a dramatic dogfight.

The real-life version of the snitch is a person with a sock-wrapped tennis ball hanging from the back of their waistband, wrestling with seekers in a full-field game of keepaway.

David Saient-Germaine from the Vancouver Vipertooths said the sport allows “you to come as you are,” and includes provisions for the number of people on field with the same gender.

Though the sport started with Harry Potter fans, Saient-Germaine said many athletes are now coming to the sport and becoming Harry

“It’s not just Harry Potter to us,” said Fraser Duff from the Alberta Clippers.

Abbotsford resident Benedict Reiners used to be the first captain for the Simon Fraser University (SFU) Marauders, who placed second to the Alberta Clippers. Since he had to commute to SFU all the time, Reiners – who has since retired his broom – wanted to be part of a community and he found that in Quidditch.

“It’s a sport that’s open to everyone,” said Reiners. “We’ve got those people who have never played the sport before or read books before.”

The Clippers celebrated their championship like any other sports team would, but Quidditch is still a fringe sport.

Some teams did crowdfunding campaigns just to get to the western regionals. Some university teams aren’t allowed to use their campus fields to practice yet. The University of Victoria (UVic) Valkyries still practise on the lawn in front of their library.

The Vipertooths, Valkyries, Marauders, Clippers and Calgary Mudbloods played in a full single round robin over two days followed by a championship final between the Marauders and Clippers.

They beat SFU for first place, 60-40, earning the Clippers their second consecutive western championship.

The Clippers now advance to the national championship in Kingston, Ont., this April.

Cascades set to battle with Manitoba The UFV Cascades men’s basketball team is completely healthy, and will finally have all hands on deck for the start of the Canada West playoffs.

The Cascades take on the University of Manitoba Bisons in a best-of-three series, which kicked off on Thursday night. The clubs also tangle on

Friday and, if necessary, on Sunday, with all games occurring in Winnipeg.

Cascades head coach Adam Friesen said the team is confident heading into the postseason. “We feel good, we’re all healthy and I think the guys are really excited about that,� he said.

UFV finished with a record of 12 wins and

eight losses, good for second place in the Explorer division, and had a week off last week.

The break gave some time for the club to heal up. Cascades star Kevon Parchment has been the team’s constant this year, finishing in the top 10 in the conference in points, assists, rebounds and blocks.

The Bisons finished

third in the Pioneer division at 15 wins and five losses, and have a number of offensive tools, including AJ Basi and Justus Alleyn, who both ranked in the top 20 in the conference in scoring. “We might not be able to contain both of them,� Friesen said. “But each night we want to make one of their lives

as difficult as possible.

We need to stay close with them because they can both shoot and have deep range.�

Friesen said giving them difficult looks from beyond the arc, and controlling defensive rebounds are the main keys to the series.

The Explorer and Pioneer divisions don’t have any schedule

crossover during the regular season, but the Cascades and Bisons did meet in the preseason.

UFV prevailed 72-67 on Oct. 24 at the Lea Marc Printing Tournament, hosted by the University of Winnipeg.

In other news, the UFV men’s basketball program and Rising Stars Basketball Academy are teaming up to host a

pair of Spring Break basketball camps for boys and girls aged five to 12.

The camps run March 14 to 17 and March 21 to 24, from 10 a.m. to noon each day, at UFV’s Envision Athletic Centre. Cost for each camp is $50. The final sign-up session will be held at Harry Sayers Elementary from 5-8 p.m. on March 9.

VANDERHAM Andy June 26, 1936 ~ February 17, 2016 On the morning of February 17th, 2016, Andy went to be with his Heavenly Father after a long history of health issues. Andy is survived by his loving wife Helen of 55 years, daughter Esther (Bill) Fietje, grandchildren Michelle (Kevin), Vanessa (Kenny), Joshua, Samantha, great grandchild Kenzie, his brother Jacques (Geke) Vanderham in Africa and many nieces and nephews.

Pre-deceased by his son Eric Vanderham. Andy was born in the Netherlands and immigrated with his family to start a new adventure in Abbotsford in 1974. He was an honest, hardworking man that enjoyed his life to the fullest. He loved to paint, volunteer playing piano at different retirement homes, videoing church services to play at Ebenezer home, and taking drives with Helen through the beautiful country side. A celebration of Andy’s life will be held on Thursday, March 10th at Gateway Community Christian Reformed Church, 2884 Gladys Ave., Abbotsford, BC at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

Dearly missing the lofty mountains of Bavaria, Jutta motivated John to move to Abbotsford in 1963. They lived on a hobby farm while John continued in his trade.

It is with deep sadness that Lucille Thelma Layton (nee Montgomery) lost her valiant battle with cancer on Sunday, February 28 at Christine Morrison Hospice in Mission, BC. Lucille was a very vibrant and resilient lady. She was pre-deceased by her husband Donald Layton and was the mother of 3 sons, Robert, Donald and Roderick as well as 5 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Her family and friends can all attest to her resilient nature and she will be sorely missed by all.

There will be no service by request. Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be encouraged and greatly appreciated in honor of Lucille.

Born November 22, 1926 in Beausejour, Manitoba, passed away March 1, 2016 in Mission, BC. He is survived by his loving family: wife Nellie; children Joanne Kennedy, Larry (Katrina), Darlene (Burton) Shewfelt and Neil; 7 grandchildren; 1 great grandson; sister Linda Quilty; nieces and nephews, other family members and friends. Mount Baker was a prominent feature of the view from their home, and Jutta pursued her deep passion and fascination for the mountains, logging about 1,000 hikes throughout the Cascades and Chilliwack Valley. She formed the Fraser Valley Hikers some 40 years ago to share her experiences. She was a never-ending fountain of knowledge for every trail, every peak, and every alpine flower and other flora and fauna.

A talented artist, Jutta reflected her love for mountains and other natural scenes in her oil paintings and sketches. She was the founder of the Abbotsford Palette Club in 1978. She also was a gifted knitter, and creator of traditional Bavarian handicrafts and artwork.

Jutta and John emigrated to eastern Canada in 1951. Having learned to weld in Germany, John was a dedicated provider while Jutta looked after their home. Their son Andrew was born in 1957 in Chicoutimi, Quebec.

Jutta was one of the three children of Anton and Auguste (Kirchner) Babion. She was born Feb. 19, 1926 in Vienna, Austria where she lived until 1934, and then moved with her family to Germany. She was trained as a textile designer, and eventually came to live in Schliersee, Bavaria, where she met her husband-to-be, John Ivan Holota, who left his family farm in the Ukraine during the turmoil of World War II.

Jutta was an immensely devoted mother and wife, helping her husband with farm work, and taking her son on countless hikes and outdoor trips. She was loving, warm and wise, kind and generous, and a great cook. Any child would be truly blessed to have such a supportive, inspiring mom.

Andrew became a photographer and journalist, starting his career at the Abbotsford News, and after many postings and adventures in the region and around the world, returned to The News in 2009 as editor, in part, to be closer to his mom.

She was also a committed animal lover, enjoying and caring for numerous cats and dogs, many of them strays, during the farm years, and at their later retirement home in Abbotsford, where she continued to live after John passed away in October 2006.

In lieu of flowers, donations will be much appreciated for the BCSPCA. Jutta is survived by her dear sister Nika, son Andrew, daughter-in-law Heidi and granddaughter Anna. She is predeceased by her brother Toni.

Jutta will be remembered with the deepest love and greatest respect. As it was throughout her life, her uplifting spirit now has eternal freedom and joy among the soaring peaks. Please think of her when you gaze at the region’s highest mountains.

He passed peacefully, surrounded by his wife and children. He is predeceased by his father, mother and one sister.
