There will be four shuttles running all weekend long. The Horse Barn will once again sponsor one shuttle which will run between the Festival (at the convention centre) and the Horse Barn.

The regular shuttle vans will be available all weekend for hops between the Calvary Church and the Convention Centre. They will also do pickups and drop offs at any of the hotels / motels, at the airport and bus depot.

Welcome to the Festival

From the president and Festival Chair, Mark McMillan Yes, hard to believe, but this will be the 20th consecutive Kamloops Cowboy Festival. The best part for me is looking back and seeing the support that we’ve had over the past 20 years … and some of this support has been continuous!

I think it’s amazing to be able to say that we have 20 plus entertainers back this year that were at the very first Festival in 1997, at the Stockman Hotel in downtown Kamloops. In looking over the list I see that Mark Denny of Cariboo Saddlery is back for the 20th time. The Horse Barn has always supported us, Lee’s Music – Mike did sound at the 1st Festival (hard to imagine him 20 years younger), and of course the Spirit of the West Radio Show and Canadian Cowboy Country magazine.

Speaking of Canadian Cowboy Country magazine … I’d like to give them a special thanks this

year as they have put a lot of time, effort and dollars into putting together a special 20th Anniversary souvenir flyer, Celebrating 20 years … a history of the Kamloops Cowboy Festival.

Supporters … yes, sponsors, entertainers, exhibitors, all so important, but volunteers and fans … the audience – that’s what’s kept us going for 20 years! I’m sure there are quite a few folks here this weekend that were at the very first Festival in 1997, and quite a few folks that are here this weekend that have been to, if not all, most of the Festivals over the past 20 years! A huge thank you to everyone!

If this is your first time at the Kamloops Cowboy Festival then welcome, and I hope you go home understanding why others have been back time after time.

Riversong Guitars

Our first public showing of our new guitar system was at the 2012 Kamloops Cowboy Festival. At that point we only had our 3 production prototypes and sold two guitars at the show. Since that launch, we have won many awards, a few I have listed below and are now distributed throughout Europe and North America. We will be doing tours as well as a workshop at the 20 year anniversary of this amazing event.

Congratulations are in order to Mark and his entire crew. Being the technical director with Lee's Music we have been at nearly every KHF event in the last 20 years including the very first one downtown Kamloops. This remarkable festival has helped launch the careers of many performers, artists, and also crafts people. The team always makes sure to remember and honour the people that have made BC great and I feel fortunate to be involved in the past 20 years. Joe Marten Memorial Award for the Preservation of Cowboy Heritage in BC Len Monical is the recipient for 2016!

The BC Cowboy Heritage Society is proud to be able to once again present the Joe Marten Memorial Award for the Preservation of Cowboy Heritage in BC. The Society's mandate is to promote and preserve cowboy heritage in the Province of BC and this award is an excellent way of recognizing anyone that participates. The 2016 recipient undoubtedly fits the requirements of this award as

he is both a cowboy and an artist.

The award will be presented on Saturday, March 19th during the evening main feature show at the Calvary Church. Join us to help honor the 2016 recipient. Len Monical biography Len was born in 1939, in Oregon, to a ranching family. He has never stopped living the cowboy way of life ... riding, training working dogs and cutting horses, and sharing that knowledge with the public through his art ... most notably with his bronzes. With the encouragent of a teacher when Len was young he began working at different forms of art including drawing, painting, and sculpting.

In 1962 Len's family bought 30,000 acres known as the 105 Mile Ranch. Len ranched / cowboyed with his father and brothers Robert and Wendell until the sale of the ranch to Block Brothers in the 1970's. He continued his work with horses, including training cutting horses that Len Monical earned their way into the Canadian Cutting Horse Hall of Fame. He still spends time helping his neighbours and family whenever they need help moving cattle, branding, or even putting up hay, and he enjoys teaching his nephews and nieces and great nephews and nieces how to "read the cows" and to use "soft hands" when handling their horses.

In the 1980s Len started with sculpture ... first with a torch and brass rods. Realizing that this probably wasn't the best way to make bronze sculptures Len spent some time in Florida learning methods from respected painter and sculptor Eugene Shortridge.

Len says he likes a challenge, and likes learning something new, so before long he'd perfected his technique and was commissioned to create several cast bronze trophies for equine events.

One of the most important to the BC Cowboy Heritage Society was the main trophy top for the BC Cowboy Hall of Fame, but to others maybe the most important piece was of a cowboy and his cutting horse in action that was presented to Princess Philip in 1983.

Len Monical figures he's made about 50 pieces over the years, all of which show action! Len states, "If you can't capture the action, all you have is a statue." His bronze work includes horses, cowboys, rodeo, working dogs, ranch life, and wildlife.

The BCCHS is proud to display Len's work on their prestigious BC Cowboy Hall of Fame trophy and is very proud to add the name Len Monical to the list of recipents for the Annual Joe Martem Memorial Award for the Preservation of Cowboy Heritage in BC.

BCCHS - Society Fund Raiser Raffles 1st Raffle - The 2016 Commemorative Belt Buckle This has become a favourite annual raffle. Tickets are $10 each and the winner will receive a solid silver, custom handmade, 2016 Kamloops Cowboy Festival commemorative belt buckle valued at about $750. It's a one of a kind buckle too, made by Merritt silversmith Richard Tenisch. There are only 300 tickets printed for this raffle and they're $10 each. Tickets will be sold in the trade show area, at the information desks, and at the General Stores - ask any volunteer!

There are only 900 tickets printed for this raffle and you get three tickets for $10. Tickets will be sold in the trade show area, at the information desks, and at the General Stores - ask any volunteer!

Miss Teen Canada at the 20th Annual Kamloops Cowboy Festival!

Last year Samantha Sewell was at the Festival as Miss Teenage Okanagan. Since then she has gone on to be crowned Miss Teen Canada! Samantha is compassionate and truly cares about people. She volunteers many hours with Service Club, Student voice and with her school’s class for special kids. She is currently working towards her Duke of Edinburgh award. Sam’s passion is working with kids and youth with special needs.

She plans on following her heart down this path by becoming a Behavior Interventionist as well as an Educational Assistant. Sam created and writes a fashion blog and loves to share her style with the world. Samantha has won awards for photography, citizenship, honor roll, and roll of distinction. Sam will be representing our country, Canada, at the upcoming Miss Teen Galaxy International Pageant.

The winners of scholarships are: - Teresa Zhu of Vancouver for a drawing - Jaya Scott of Victoria for a short story The winners will each receive $500.00 towards future education and they will be acknowledged at the Kamloops Cowboy Festival during the main evening feature show on Saturday at the Calvary Community Church.

Mike Puhallo Memorial Student Scholarships The Mike Puhallo Memorial Scholarship for Cowboy Poetry received 166 entries this year – from all over Canada and the US. The judges, Sharlene Puhallo, Dave Longworth, and Rod Miller all picked a poem called "A Cowboy, Through and Through" written by Megan Bull from Penticton as the first place winner and they picked “Early Morning Sonnet of the West" by Angela Leung from Burnaby as the second place winner. They will receive a $500 scholarship each.

In the process those who enter increase their awareness of our BC cowboy heritage and the role of the cowboy and ranching in our history.

The Spirit of the West Rising Star Showcase The Spirit of the West Radio Show will once again sponsor the Rising Star Showcase. Each year we’ve found new, extremely worthy, main stage entertainers for the following year’s Festival. That gives a pretty good indication as to the quality of performers that enter this competition.

There are two different categories - one for Cowboy Poets and one for Western Musicians. The two categories are judged separately and there are separate cash prizes - $1000 for first place and $500 for second place in both categories.

This year we’ll be using the same two stages - one in the Festival Trade Show area and the other in the Fireside Room at the Church.

Musicians will be on the Trade

Show stage Friday at 1 p.m., Saturday at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Poets (tentative) will be in the Church Friday at 3 p.m., Saturday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Sunday the three finalists from both categories will perform on the main stage in the Dinner Theatre at 3 p.m., this is a special Rising Star Showcase.

The 2016 Hall of Fame inductions To be inducted at the Festival Friday, March 18th, 2016

Stan Jacobs Working Cowboy

Stan Jacobs is the cow boss at Canada's largest ranch, the Douglas Lake Cattle Company, and has been for the past 25 years.

It's Stan's job to oversee 16 to 18 cowboys, 20,000 head of cattle and a remuda of about 350 horses. Stan was born in Calgary June 22, 1956, but his family moved to DeWinton soon thereafter. Here he got his appreciation

for the land; hunting, fishing, and trapping.

When Stan graduated from high school he applied at a college in Hinton with the idea of becoming a park warden. The courses were full so Stan decided to get a job as a cowboy. He spent a few years pasture riding for Alberta Livestock Transplants then moved to BC and took on a job cowboying with a friend at Nicola Ranch in 1980. Here he met and married his wife Shirley. In 1984 they moved to Gang Ranch for a short time, then returned to the Nicola Valley, range riding on Pike Mountain. They returned to Nicola Ranch in 1985 as cowboss and had two kids, Megan and Cameron. In 1987 the family made the move to Douglas Lake Ranch and in 1990, with the retirement of Mike Ferguson, Stan became the cowboss.

Cattle graze 10 months of the year and the herd consists of about 4,500 Hereford cows and 2,500 Black Baldie cows and 450 bulls.

4,500 yearlings are put on grass the following spring to be sold as long yearlings in the fall. Each year about 1,500 yearling heifers are retained as replacements. Douglas Lake Ranch cattle are grazed on over 350,000 acres of Crown grazing land and the ranch has about 5,700 acres of crop land producing as much as 6,000 tons of hay and 21,000 tons of silage. Stan is a believer in tradition and all the cattle work at Douglas Lake Ranch is done with horses.

Henry Schneider Working Cowboy/Horseman

Henry Schneider was born Nov. 3, 1916 in Ashcroft. His parents, John and Lena, had moved, by covered wagon, from the US to a homestead in Upper Hat Creek.

Henry was their middle child of three, with sisters Edna and Helen (Helen was inducted into the BC Cowboy Hall of Fame 1999).

All three turned out to be great, hardwork-

ing ranchers and were more comfortable in the saddle than anywhere. Henry met Elsie Johnston, a school teacher who had moved to Ashcroft from the Prairies and in October 1951 they married. They never had children of their own, but did have an extended family of neighbours and friends' kids that often stayed with them on holidays. Henry raised cattle on the property homesteaded by his parents. He ran about 200 head of cows and kept the calves till they were long yearlings. He was an excellent grass manager and cattleman and his yearlings always brought top price. Henry and Elsie kept a couple of milk cows, a couple of pigs and a bunch of chickens and raised their own hay and grain to feed these animals. Henry was also a very good horseman and cowboy, he participated in some of the local rodeos in both calf roping and team roping. He was particularly good at heeling calves and was in great demand as a heeler at the various brandings in the Upper Hat Creek Valley and in the Ashcroft area. He was also a great friend to all who knew him. They sold the ranch in 1965, worked on the Harper ranch for a while, had 2 addresses in Cache Creek, and then moved to 16 mile. Henry spent the rest of his life cowboying for whoever needed a hand around the area. He passed away on April 6th, 1991.

2016 BC Cowboy Hall of Fame Inductees are: To be inducted at the Williams Lake Indoor Rodeo, April 17th, 2016 Raphael Alphonse Working Cowboy

Raphael Pascal Alphonse was born to Mabel (Lee) and Charlie Alphonse on Dec. 17, 1928 in Anaham Meadow. He spent many years in this meadow feeding cattle in winter and making hay in summer. In his younger years, Raphael also worked at many ranches: Chilco Ranch, Chezzacut Ranch, Gang Ranch, Onward Ranch, and others. He was one of the best team ropers and calf rop-

ers, on the head or the heels, he didn't care. Raphael competed in the Chilcotin Rodeo Association (CRA), British Columbia Rodeo Association (BCRA), British Columbia Indian Rodeo Association (BCIRA), the Interior Rodeo Association (IRA), and many jackpot rodeos. He won many trophies and buckles and was proud of his BCIRA gold membership card. Raphael trained many of his own horses for rodeo and took great care and pride, spending many hours in training his "hosses". He trained his last horse at age 80. He attended farrier training in Dawson Creek in 1970 and was certified. Raphael and his wife Susie ranched and raised seven children; Florence, Bella, Faye, Karen, Melvin, and twins Carla and Carl, and their oldest granddaughter Sharmon for her first few years. Raphael passed away on Nov. 12, 2014 and had ridden his horse up until two years before his passing.

Hank Krynen Working Cowboy/Horseman

Hank Krynen was born Sept.

14, 1932 in Bussum, Holland.

During WWII, the occupying soldiers would let a young Hank feed and groom the army horses starting a love for horses. He would also harness and drive any animal that would allow it.

Liberated in 1945 by the Canadians, Hank always wanted to see where those "tough bug-

gers" came from. Well, in 1950 at the age of 18, he did just that.

While attending Utrecht University, he had the opportunity to come to Canada to work on a farm in Ft. Langley. He left Holland on a Troop Transport ship and made his way across Canada by train. Working his way across BC, Hank made it to the Cariboo where he first worked on the Fox Mountain Ranch for Jim Fox and then for Harold Robson. One spring in the early 1950's his good friend Lenny DeRose took him to a rodeo at Alkali Lake ... he loved it there and took a job as cowboy for Mario Riedemann, and cow boss Bill Twan, at the Alkali Lake Ranch, a place where he was to spend most of his working life.

In 1961, Hank took a short diversion from Alkali Lake to the Circle S Ranch at Dog Creek.

He then rode for Hugh & Sonia Cornwall at the Onward Ranch, always referring to Hugh as a "true gentleman." When Martin Riedemann took over ownership of the Alkali Lake Ranch from

his father in the early 1960's, Hank was appointed Foreman and continued in that role for 15 years, until he left the ranch in 1978 when Martin passed away. By this time, Hank had married Julia Dakin and they had two children, Andrew and Joanna. An avid rodeo competitor in his youth, Hank participated in the Calf Roping and Team Roping events at local rodeos and the Wild Cow Milking in the Williams Lake Stampede. In his late 70's, Hank was driving teams in the Williams Lake Stampede Parades with Inductees of the Cowboy Hall of Fame. At the age of 70 he drove a team and wagon from Chezacut to Quesnel for the Mulvahill Wagon Train and he also took guests for wagon rides at his own surprise 80th birthday party. Hank, at age 83, now has his own place on the west side of the Fraser where he still ranches. He acquired a new saddle horse at the age of 80 and a Percheron draft horse at age 82.

THIS YEAR'S Abe Zacharias

Abe Zacharias is an award-winning vocalist and songwriter who has performed in many parts of Canada and the US. His 1993 appearance on the stage of the Grand Ol' Opry and his 1997 Golden Heart Award (Country Gospel Male Vocalist of the Year) are two of his career highlights.

Abe has gained a legion of fans through his more than 35 years of making music. He was especially pleased when one of them, country star Paul Brandt, credited Abe as being one of his important musical influences. Recently one of Abe's songs Prairie Homestead from his Songs of the Sage and Saddle album has been receiving extensive airplay by the European Country Music Association. In December 2009 it went to #10 in the Netherlands and #8 in Belgium. Then in January of 2010 it went to #2 in Norway.

Alan Moberg

Alan Moberg born in Pender Harbour, BC, he has worked on the sea as a fisherman and on the land. His songs reflect the affinity for people who live close to the land, including the Native Indians.

Alan Moberg has received an Award from BMI Canada (Socan)

for "an outstanding contribution to Canadian music" as well as three from the BC Country Music Association during his long musical history. He has written, and sung, about BC in general, for well over 35 years!

One of his best known songs is The Williams Lake Stampede. Alan Moberg seems to be reinvigorated with new recordings and a return to concert stages.

He does for BC's interior ranchland and coastal rainforest what Ian Tyson does for Alberta cow country and Stan Rogers did for the Great Lakes. Moberg's melodic voice reaches into people's souls.

Alan sings and listening hearts respond.

Audiences love him.

Alan was inducted into the BC Country Music Hall of Fame in October 2008!

Bryn Thiessen

Bryn Thiessen is a self described Rancher/ Poet/Cowboy and an extremely unique individual. He was raised with 4 sisters and says that he never learned to talk before going to school because he couldn't get a word in edge wise. In an attempt to make up for lost time Bryn began to write and recite poetry. Although Bryn is mostly known as a cowboy poet he says he'd rather rope a cow then talk about it. He raises commercial cattle and ranch horses as well as hiring out to neighboring outfits.

No matter what he's doing he continues to find something to feed his slightly deranged mind. Bryn's first tape

was made in 1990.

It was followed by a book in 1994. Next, was a video in 2000, with the combined efforts of Chris and Sharky Schauer. From this video Bryn also produced a CD. Bryn lives with his wife and three kids at Helmer Creek Ranch, in Sundre, Alberta.

Bud Webb

Bud Webb began his professional career in the music industry in the late 60's touring throughout Canada with his band "Bud Webb & The Outriders". By the mid 70's they had two albums under their belt and many successful tours including working with Marg Osborne and Don Messer of the "Don Messer Show".

Today, Bud has settled in Lake Errock, BC. In 2002 Bud was inducted into the BC Country Music Hall of Fame. He continues to stay active with live performances and annual Santa Claus appearances. He has released three CDs: "Cowboy-Ography", "Enjoy a Seniors Moment", and "I Just Don't Look Good Naked Anymore". The latter was live from the Merritt Mountain Fest. Now enjoying his eighth decade he'll be back to perform a few sets throughout the weekend.

Butch Falk

A featured performer

at many cowboy gatherings and festivals in Canada and the US. Butch possesses a unique ability to bring the most descriptive cowboy lyrics to life.

His music literally transports the listener to another place and time. A dynamic contemporary performer, Butch Falk is always true to the cowboy spirit in all of us.

When Butch is not performing he is busy in his workshop building guitars. Nominated for the Academy of Western Artist's 'Rising Star Award' in 1998, Butch went on to become a Nominee for Male Vocalist of the Year in both 1999 and 2000.

His song, 'Cinnamon', was nominated for The Academy of Western Artist's 'Song of the Year'. Another cut, 'Below the Kinney Rim', made the Top Ten play list on western music stations as well as the Top 100 for the 1990's.

David Longworth

Dave thanks his Dad and Uncle for starting him in cowboy poetry at a young age, as they both were fond of reciting classic cowboy poetry. At the age of 16 he first went on his own, working on farms and ranches, chasing his dream of becoming an artist, and started into the folk and country music scene. About 1983 the music thing stopped and Dave started to focus more on a career as an actor.

Although he had some concern that he had no formal training, after 24 years of bits, feature roles, movies, and TV series, he is now a

very established actor!

In 1990 he helped produce a cowboy poetry festival in Princeton and in 1991 was a feature poet at the Okeefe Ranch. He gives a good mix of classics as well as his own original poems.

Don and his wife live on a ranch in central Alberta, near the hamlet of Meeting Creek.

For many years they rotational grazed steers and raised and trained border collies. Don has recited at many of the poetry gatherings across Canada and the US, including Elko. His primary occupation is as pastor of the Heartland Cowboy Church in Stettler, AB. Coming back to Kamloops after all these years is a bit of a full circle thing, as Cowboy Churches originated at Cowboy Poetry Gatherings.

Duane Lee Nelson fueled by a passion for the cowboy lifestyle and a love of entertaining, Duane has delighted audiences across the Northwest for the last fifteen years. From brandings to County Fairs, from private parties to large gatherings like "The Spirit of the West" in Ellensburg WA, and a 2nd place finish in the "Rising Star Division: Reciter, Serious" at the National Cowboy Poetry Rodeo in 2009, Duane can be found reciting classics old and new, along with his own works. Duane and his wife live on a ranch near The Dalles, Oregon, where they take care of a small bunch of cows and ride for other local ranchers. The winner of the Spirit of the West Rising Star Showcase in 2015!

Born and raised in Saskatchewan, Ed was surrounded by the many musicians in his family and their instruments. His first "real" guitar was purchased when he was 16. Ed studied Chet Atkins recordings and played in bands in the Clearwater, BC area while continuing to fill his own artistic toolbox.

He has expressive skill on fiddle, banjo, dobro, and harmonica, as well as guitar. Ed has developed a solo style performance that at turns has people laughing, then crying.

In recent years he has been working on another style of "roots" music - the true roots of his own Cree heritage. Ed's work has made its way across North America and into many different countries, including Germany, Australia, Japan, Israel, England, South Africa, and Taiwan - all this from his home base of Crofton, British Columbia. Ed will be playing the Thursday Night Kickoff Dinner/Dance at the Ramada, too!

Born on the Canadian Prairies in Rose Valley Saskatchewan, Gary moved to Prince George as a teenager.

In 1970 music became a full time occupation.

He has entertained at Cowboy gatherings from Calgary to Tucson. He now lives on Gabriola Island, on Canada's West Coast with his wife Lynne.

They have four daughters and many grandchildren! As busy as Gary's schedule might get, he still finds time to help the budding song writer at seminars and workshops from the Yukon to Montana!

His shows range from small theatre to the main stage of some of Canada's top festivals like the Big Valley Jamboree, the Merritt Mountain Music Festival, Canada Day Celebrations on Parliament Hill, and of course the Kamloops Cowboy Festival! He looks back on a rewarding career and gratefully acknowledges with fondness, the hundreds of towns and cities, and thousands of listeners who have been touched by his music.

This Williams Lake rancher is known as the fastest, funniest, cowboy poet in the west.

His original poems are delivered in an easy going, humorous style.

Frank has entertained audiences across Canada and the US. One of the highlights of his career was an invitation to perform his poetry at a Farm Aid Concert in Atlanta, Georgia alongside famous singing stars. Regrettably he wasn't able to attend, but just being invited was an honour.

Numerous dignitaries have been entertained

by Frank, including the Lieutenant Governor of BC, the Premier of BC, mayors and council members. He was recognized by the 2003 city council when he was declared "official poet of Williams Lake".

On several occasions, Frank has been nominated by the Academy of Western Artists to receive the Will Rogers Award for male cowboy poet of the year.

In 2003, he placed in the top five. His songs and poems have been played on radio and television throughout Canada, United States, and Europe. He has been a feature entertainer many times at the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nevada and the Kamloops Cowboy Festival. In March 2010, Frank was inducted into the BC Cowboy Hall of Fame in the artistic category.

Frank writes all his own material and has five books of poetry and has recorded four CDs of his poems and songs.

Gord West and Mike Dygert (aka The Gordie West Band) are a couple of guys with a thirst for the folklore of the west and a yen to play good, old cowboy music! Gordie West, who lives a short drive north of Kamloops, began playing in country bands in his teens, spent close to 20 years touring overseas where he released 5 albums and now combines a singing career with the wandering life of a Tour Director. He has a voice range that can showcase the bal-

Horse Crazy cowgirl band is an award winning TRIO offering hot licks, harmonizing, humor, all wrapped up in kick your cowboy boots up western music. The band has been performing since 2000, twice winning Western Music Associations "Best Trio of the Year".

They have created an unmistakable sound, with five albums and performances across the United States and Canada.

Hugh McLennan

Jinny Cash hails from Central Idaho and has been playing music around honky tonks, saloons and churches for over 20 years including gatherings in Idaho, Washington and Nevada. She played at the 2009 Kamloops Cowboy Festival and had the dinner theatre stage hopping with the honky tonk piano! She plays a compliment of ragtime, western, western swing and traditional country. In addition, Jinny used to publish print and online newspapers and magazines that celebrate the western way of life including Happy Trails, Cowboy Troubadour, and Country Western Gazette. She was a board member for the Lee Earl Memorial Gathering in Lewiston Idaho and is active with the Western Music Association and Cowboy Poets of Idaho.

vocals, solid swing rhythm guitar style, unique songwriting, award winning yodel, and captivating stage presence. In 2014 she became the youngest person in history to be awarded Western Music Association Female Performer of the Year, and in 2013 was also named Academy of Western Artists Female Vocalist of the Year. Her singing has been praised as "timeless" with "the warmth and power of Texas sunshine". Now 21 years old she began playing and singing at age 14. Kristyn's musical career fell hand in hand with another passion: training horses.

You can still find her combining these passions, too, when she rides into rodeo arenas on her once-wild mustang to sing the Star Spangled Banner. In June of 2015 Kristyn released her 3rd solo album, "Down the Trail", which was presented with the Rural Roots Music Commission Pure Country & Western CD of the Year a few months later. Also in 2015, she became the Cowtown Society of Western Swing Rising Star of the Year. She has received the 2013 Cowboy Swing Album of the Year for "Let Me Ride", the 2012 Crescendo Award and 2012 Female Yodeler of the Year from the Western Music Association. In 2011 she won the Rising Star Show Case at the Kamloops Cowboy Festival.

Mack Station

Mack Station is a group of five siblings ranging from age 10 to 17.

They hail from Mammit Lake, a bit north of Merritt, BC. With their love of music, horses, hunting, and a new endeavor called Hidden Valley Rustic Horse Camp, they sometimes entertain guests horse camping on their property. Where does the talent come from?

Mag Mawhinney

Mag Mawhinney is an award-winning, western roots poet who was named the 2012 Cowgirl Poet of the Year for the Will Rogers Awards, sponsored by the Academy of Western Artists in the US. She has been a featured performer at every major cowboy festival and other events in Western Canada and into the US. Her recitations have also been aired on TV and radio. Her passion for writing extends to freelancing and she's been published internationally in numerous magazines, anthologies, newspapers and web sites. In recent years, Mag has turned her hand to song writing and her fourth poetry book, "Western Spirit", released in 2012, was nominated as one of the Top Five Poetry Albums for the Will Rogers Awards.

The book contains poems, songs and photos. It also includes a 13 track music CD in which eight musicians from Canada and the US sing the melodies they've composed for her lyrics. Mag resides on Vancouver Island.

Matt's song writing talent and love of the cowboy culture have produced some wonderful songs. Matt has been writing and performing at Cowboy Festivals, concerts and gatherings for over a decade.

In 2002 and 2003 he was nominated for the "Rising Western Star Award" by the Academy of Western Arts in Fort Worth and again in 2010 for the "Male Western Vocalist". His debut recording features eight of his original songs and is put together with twenty three poems by Canada's Cowboy Poet, Mike Puhallo. After focusing on his homestead and family life for a few years Matt is shifting his energy back towards music and is currently working on a new album. Matt hangs his hat in Upper Clearwater which is surrounded by Wells Gray Park. Matt and his wife Ursula are both farriers. He divides his spare time between family, homestead, horses and working in his saddle shop. Busy guy, hey!

Rob Dinwoodie Nathan's cowboy career started in the early 80s in south-west Alberta.

Curious about cowboy ways, he began working on local ranches, learning "the ropes" at the EP and D south of Longview. Throughout the past thirty years he has recorded and toured with Ian Tyson, Great Western Orchestra, Cindy Church, Quartette, Undertakin' Daddies and many others. Performing at Elko and other poetry gatherings, he has made a name for himself as a guitarist, singer and songwriter. Now living on Gabriola Island on BC's west coast, he records and produces in his home studio. He is looking forward to being around the cowboy culture again.

Ol' Ugly

Rob Dinwoodie Provides a cornucopia of music from traditional cowboy to western swing. Most of the material he performs are his originals. Songs of the historical BC west about the BX Express and Val Haynes will keep audience’s toes tapping the entire evening from Rob's new CD "Hands Up" ... a tribute to Billy Miner.

He regularly entertains audiences at the Historic O'Keefe Ranch, Vernon during the summer at the ever popular "Cowboy Dinner Show" and throughout BC where-ever songs of the west are sung.

Canadian Mounted Police for more than fifty years; an active member for twenty eight years. He writes and recites poetry about the early history of the Force and some of its heroes. He also writes and performs traditional Cowboy Poetry. He wears a 1895 N.W.M.P. period uniform or the current R.C.M.P. dress Red Serge while reciting his poetry. He was the first member of the force to be given permission to wear the uniform after retirement for other than "State or formal occasions". He is a member of The R.C.M.P. Veterans Association, an Honorary Member of The Former Texas Rangers Association, a life member and past president of The Alberta Cowboy Poetry Association. He has performed in London England, Texas, Arizona, Montana, and numerous Cowboy Poetry Gatherings in Western Canada. He performs as a guest lecturer on Alaska Cruises with Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. He has appeared on National Television and Radio, as well as "The Spirit of the West" with Hugh McLennan and "Canadian Cowboy Country Television" "The Mountie Cowboy Poet", and entertains as an after dinner and convention speaker.

Ryan says he doesn't think he could be one without the other.

Most of his song writing material comes to him while working in the saddle or picking guitar at night to unwind the day's events.

Ryan has just released

his fourth album entitled Wind Blow Buckaroo. With original songs like, "Horses on the Fly" and "Kids in the Wagon" he shares a glimpse into modern day cowboy life and pays tribute to the days of old. He has performed at various cowboy festivals in both Canada, the USA, and is looking forward to performing his new songs for his listeners.

A true product of the West, Ryan was born in BC, raised in Alberta, and now calls Saskatchewan home. He has worked on some of Canada's largest ranches, including the Gang Ranch and Douglas Lake. He runs his own outfit in Saskatchewan with his family, where traditions of cowboying, ranching and music are a part of everyday life.

Shirley Field

An exceptionally talented yodeller, Shirley is a musical treasure.

At the age of nine she announced that "I'm gonna be a Yodeller"!

Shirley wrote a book with Rudy Robbins called, How to Yodel the Cowboy Way, which has inspired yodellers around the world. She has performed with the likes of Loretta Lynn and Marty Robbins. In 1962 she sang at the Grand Ol' Opry. Shirley was inducted into the BC Cowboy Hall of Fame in March 2000. She has a book and CD on how to yodel and over the years has taught many of our feature performers to yodel - some of them at her workshop on how to yodel, at the Festival. Shirley was inducted into the BC Country Music Hall of Fame in 2006. Shirley, even though she retired, has agreed to return and do one song for us during the Friday evening main feature.

Terri Mason

Since her inaugural debut at Pincher Creek in 1992, Terri has been featured at every major gathering across the West. Terri was the first Canadian woman featured in Elko, Nevada and the first Canadian featured at Gene Autry’s Melody Ranch in Santa Clarita, California. In 2006, Terri was chosen to represent Alberta at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington, DC. Terri spent most of her youth working with horses as an outfitter and a horse logger. In 1999, she was the lone woman invited to take part in the Last Great Hitch of the Century - a 30-horse hitch of draft horses. She is a walking plow champion and a member of an annual threshing crew. In 2005, Terri and her team of draft horses helped build the Centennial Road at Reynolds Alberta Museum. Terri now lives with her draft horses on a cattle ranch in central Alberta and is the editor of Canadian Cowboy Country magazine, the Yellowhead Highway Travel Guide and a segment producer and story consultant for the multiple awardwinning television show, Cowboy Country.

Brian Salmond has an unusual and refreshing twist on his writings.

He has the uncanny talent to see the humorous side of seemingly every situation and is able to record it on paper for others to enjoy. While delivering his poems to an audience it is apparent that Brian is also gifted in relating his stories to others. Tom Cole is a larger than life tall drink of water (6'6) that can quench your thirst for country music. His rich baritone voice was made to sing cowboy songs.

His approach to the music makes the listener believe every word he sings.

Western Spirit Band

Western Spirit Band with Hugh McLennan vocals & guitar, Jim McLennan lead guitar, Mike Dygert bass guitar & vocals. Jim McLennan was only 7 when big brother Hugh left home to follow his cowboy and radio dreams. The first time they ever played music together was at their Mom's 80th birthday party. There seemed to be some chemistry there and when a few years later at the Kamloops Cowboy Festival Mike sat in for a couple of jam sessions with the brothers, the chemistry was really evident. US National Fingerstyle world champion Bob Evans says this about Jim's acoustic playing: "Jim has one of the smoothest fingerstyle guitar deliveries I had ever heard." Mike Dygert is one of the most in demand bass players in the west.

He's also a fine guitar player and as well as anchoring the Western Spirit he plays bass for The Gordie West Band and they've played all over Europe Asia and many other places.
