In the 1956 Nelson High School yearbook, there’s a brief but heartwarming memoir by Hester L. Waggener recalling her days as a student there more than 40 years earlier.

“The teachers were perfect. I can see now (smiles) Mr. Fraser, Mrs. Pearcy, Mr. Seaman, Miss Smith and many others who worked for our good,” she wrote. “It was about 1913, and I believe, with few exceptions, I had to look in the looking glass to see the difference between me and my fellow students.”

The mirror revealed what was otherwise unacknowledged: she was Nelson’s only black student.

• By the time she was born in Victoria in 1895, Hester’s family already had deep roots in BC. Her paternal grandparents, the Pierres, immigrated from San Francisco in 1862, as part of a wave of black families who came at the invitation of colonial governor James Douglas to escape injustice.

In the United States, they could not get citizenship, but on Vancouver Island they could buy land and become full citizens after seven years.

Hester’s grandfather, Thomas Whiten Pierre, originally hailed from Washington, DC. He and wife Ann Elizabeth had eight children, including John Thomas and Samuel Deal, born in Victoria in 1865 and 1871 respectively.

Thomas was a merchant tailor with his own business on Yates St. He made his son John a partner and then sold him the business in 1889, although the two resumed their partnership three years later.

John married Georgianna Barbara Sharp in 1889 and they had five children, of whom only Hester survived infancy. In 1899, John’s mother died and a few months later, cancer claimed his wife at age 33.

His brother Sam had moved to Nelson in 1897 and established the Nelson Cleaning and Dyeing Establishment, advertising in the Daily Miner “Ladies and Gents’ clothing cleaned, dyed, altered and repaired.”

In March 1900, perhaps hoping a change of scenery would distract him from his grief, John joined Sam’s business in Nelson. Their office was in an alley off Josephine St., behind the Clarke Hotel.

The 1900 census indicates Hester didn’t join her father immediately, although she was shown attending school in Nelson three years later.

joined him. In 1904, when their father died, John’s sisters Corinthia and Louisa were apparently living in Nelson. That same year, John married May Gertrude Leger at the Methodist parsonage in Nelson. However, they divorced in little over two years.

The 1911 census shows John and Hester living at 608 Baker St. with Frederick and Comesta Sharp, John’s brother and sisterin-law from his first marriage, plus George Grooty, George Thurman, Romain Matthus and her daughter Gladys. With the exception of Thurman, who was white, they made up not quite the entire black population of Nelson.

In 1909, Hester passed her high school entrance exams. Nelson had one of the highest success rates in the province that year: of 37 students, 34 passed, whereas in the rest of BC, only slightly more than half made the grade — 514 of 980.

In the memoir of her high school years, Hester added: “The teachers encouraged and chided me when I neglected my studies … I failed in the first year, all those I had gone clear through school with went on. I lost interest and quit the next term.

“I played for the first high school gym glass.

Received a beautiful pin from the class and a compliment for accurate time during exercises.

Yes, was told that I had a wonderful touch for the piano. I had those girls stepping to

my music.”

Hester didn’t say who taught her to play, but at one point her father was advertising a piano for sale.

On the 1921 census, John and Hester are shown as still living together at the same address in Nelson, but within the next year she would marry Charles Waggener and move to Yakima, Wash.

John Pierre remained in Nelson until 1935, when he retired to Victoria. He died there in 1938 at age 71 and is buried in Ross Bay Cemetery. His obituary appeared in the Nelson Daily News, but despite operating a business for more than 35 years, he is not well remembered.

Hester and Charles had nine children, who all led successful careers. One became a veterinarian, another a teacher, and another an award-winning Hollywood costume designer.

“All of these [are] the outcome of Nelson High School’s influence on me,” Hester said.

“Some of these faithful teachers were so tired trying to teach us something. To you presentday scholars, your advantages are more than we had. Don’t miss a thing. It is your future and that of others to follow you.”

Hester Louise Pierre Waggener died in Yakima in 1980, age 85. Two of her children died last year, but two others are still alive.

Many other Pierre family descendants live in BC and Washington state.

SIDEBAR: Minnie Brown’s rise to fame In 1902, a remarkable letter appeared in the Seattle Republican, a leading African American newspaper, providing insight into West Kootenay’s small black community generally and the Pierre brothers specifically.

“Miss Minnie Brown has returned [to Spokane] from a three weeks visit to Kaslo.

While there she was a guest of Mr. and Mrs. A.W. Perkins, who, with the family of Mr. J.A. Sith, are the only colored residents of the little city, but they lack not for pleasure, for the Englishman is the black man’s friend.

“Mr. A.W. Perkins has lived in Kaslo nearly six years and he holds a position as a bartender in Kaslo’s leading hotel and receives an excellent salary. The white citizens

of Kaslo are excellent people as a whole, many musicians and scholars being found amongst them. It was Miss Brown’s luck to have lived in this community a number of years ago and her return to it was a pleasure and she was made thoroughly welcome there.

“Messrs. John T. Pierre and S.D. Pierre are men of color, their home being in Victoria.

These gentlemen have the leading tailoring establishment in Nelson. Their goods are imported direct from England by them.

Their work is something fine and their trade is excellent. They are kept busy continually, sometimes having to hire a number of assistants.

“This shows what a colored man can do when he is given half a chance, and then when the chance is given and he attends to business as these gentlemen do, he thereby

wins the confidence and respect of his white customers and retains it. The tailoring establishment of the Pierre Bros. is well known throughout British Columbia.”

According to an 1895 story in the Kaslo Prospector, a benefit concert was held there for Minnie Brown “to assist her in obtaining a musical education in Spokane. The best wishes of the ladies of Kaslo go with her in her efforts, and they hope her voice may, after a season of training, charm audiences elsewhere as it has here.”

By 1906, Brown joined the Williams and Walker company, a touring troupe, and a few years later landed a role in the Broadway production of Mr. Lode of Koal. She enjoyed a long career as a singer, impresario, and choir director. In the 1920s, she ran her own vocal studio in New York.

Last of three parts Finding staff for the Ymir hospital was always a challenge and turnover of doctors and nurses was high. Ads like this frequently appeared: “WANTED — At the Ymir General Hospital, a duly qualified doctor and surgeon. For full particulars write to W.B. McIsaac, secretary Ymir General Hospital, Ymir BC.” But the community did have a few long-term and notable medical personnel.

• Dr. Herman Louis Arthur Keller (1860-1919) arrived from England in 1895 and established himself in Rossland. He moved to Ymir by 1898 and operated a four-bed hospital. After briefly returning to England, his family went to Kelowna, where he established a limited practice. He built a house and medical office in 1902 which still stands — the only remaining home from the original Kelowna townsite — although in 1908 it was moved to a new location.

Dr. Keller’s son Rodney joined the military and commanded the Canadian 3rd Division during the Normandy invasion of 1944, despite being criticized as unfit.

• Dr. George Edward Duncan (1870-1947) began practicing in Ymir around the fall of 1899 — his time there appears to have briefly overlapped with Dr. Keller’s.

Dr. Duncan worked at the old Ymir hospital and was in charge of the new one when it opened in November 1903. He performed the post-mortem exam on a miner named Alex McDermid, killed in a fight, and testified at the murder trial of Murdoch Campbell, who was acquitted of the crime.

Dr. Duncan resigned from the hospital in April 1904, along with the matron and a nurse, during a controversy over finances. But the Ymir Mirror wrote: “He has ever enjoyed the entire confidence of his patients who all bear testimony to his skill.”

In 1927, at age 55, Dr. Duncan married Dora Ellis, a nurse 30 years his junior, in West Vancouver. He died a few months after poor health forced him to retire.

• Dr. George Edward Rehberger (1880-1971), from Baltimore, worked in Ymir from at least 1912 to 1915 and signed the death registrations of seven people

buried there, three of whom died in the hospital.

He served in the Spanish American war and US medical corps during World War I, and wrote two books, Lippincott’s Quick Reference Book for Medicine and Surgery (1926) and The Mind: A Key to the Interpretation of Physical Phenomena (1931).

• Charlotte Nicholson (1856-1942) was matron from about 1918 to 1925. We don’t know much about her, except that she married William T. McDowell, manager of Ymir’s Yankee Girl mine.

If they hadn’t already met, they became acquainted in 1918 when McDowell was taken to the hospital after breaking his leg at the mine. They wed in Wenatchee, Wash. in 1926 and moved to Alameda, Calif.

• May Williston Smith was a nurse in Ymir until her 1904 marriage to Royal N. Riblet of the Riblet Tramway Co. She was the second of Riblet’s seven wives and bore him two children before her death of tuberculosis in 1909. She’s buried in Nelson.

• Wesley Byron McIsaac (1852-1926) of the Ymir Miners’ Union was the hospital’s secretary for 15 years. He was buried in Ymir.

• Until the end of 1903, Ymir saw 45 registered births, none of which would have been in the new hospital.

Dr. Duncan attended 31 of them and Dr. Keller another four. On Dec. 13, 1901, Dr. Duncan delivered three babies in one day, including a set of twins.

Births from 1904 onward won’t be made public until 2025, but we know several of them including four that actually took place in the hospital: Fred Norcross (1905), Royal Read (August 1908), Evelyn Emilson (July 1922), and Perry Anderson (February 1923). Emilson — now Evelyn Murray of Salmo — is quite possibly the only person still alive born in the hospital.

• Thanks to its location on the north edge of town, the hospital was spared destruction in the Nov. 1, 1904 fire that destroyed several buildings on Ymir’s main street.

However, there was a hospital-related casualty.

Theresa Fahey had been matron of the old hospital until her marriage in 1901 to druggist Thomas H. Atkinson. She was never happy in Ymir, and indicated her desire to move to Victoria as soon as her husband could sell his business.

Druggist suspected of deliberately starting blaze CONTINUED FROM A5 “I tell him that if he can’t sell out soon for a decent price, he should set a match to it,” she said. And indeed, Atkinson’s pharmacy and stationary store burned in the fire.

Neighbours suspected Atkinson deliberately started the blaze to collect insurance, noting he moved several wagonloads of stock to his home a few weeks earlier — although he insisted this was standard practice in winter.

Atkinson was arrested and ordered to stand trial for arson. Despondent, his wife drowned herself in the town reservoir. The tragic irony was that Atkinson was acquitted.

• By the 1920s, medical directories suggest

the Ymir hospital was down to 11 or 12 beds from the 15 it opened with. For five years, Dr. William Rose and Dr. Gilbert Hartin of Nelson paid weekly visits, with Charlotte Nicholson serving as matron.

However, with Ymir’s population dwindling, the hospital closed in December 1925 and Andy Burgess was appointed the building’s caretaker.

In 1927, the Prospectors’ Protective Association passed a resolution calling for the hospital to reopen, “as there are now more than 500 men working around Ymir,” but to no avail. The following year the Ymir Women’s Institute also tried unsuccessfully to reopen it.

The building sat empty until May 11, 1930, when around 3 a.m., fire broke out toward its rear. Although it was noticed within

20 minutes, it spread so quickly nothing could be done to save the building, which was destroyed along with its linens and other furnishings. It was not insured. After 27 years, Ymir’s leading landmark was gone.

Footprints of three people leading from the hospital’s site down a steep bank to the railway tracks led to the belief that the fire was deliberately set. While residents blamed the Sons of Freedom, as the fire occurred during an arson wave in the area, police found no evidence and no one was charged.

The hospital’s site has remained vacant ever since. But the old building is featured prominently on a colourful mural in Ymir, completed by Harvey Penny in 2008.

Cranbrook cadet wins speech competition CASTLEGAR — A Cranbrook cadet won first place in an effective speaking competition on Saturday.

Sgt. Sierra Blackwell of the 552 Key City Cranbrook Squadron won first place in the Air Cadet’s Kootenay Wing Effective Speaking Competition after giving a prepared speech on her first flight and an impromptu speech.

This was Blackwell’s fourth time participating in the competition, but the first time that she’ll be advancing on to provincials to represent the Kootenay Wing. She was shocked by her win and looks forward to representing the area.

Five cadets — two from 581 Castlegar Squadron, two from the Key City Cranbrook Squadron and one from 841 Boundary Squadron — participated in the competition and each got to prepare a speech on a topic chosen from a list of eight. Following a brief intermission, each then had three minutes to prepare an impromptu speech about three uses for a pencil other than writing.

Second place also went to a cadet from the the Key City Cranbrook Squadron, FSgt. Cameron Hewison, and third place went to Castlegar cadet FCpl. John Colley.

Gerry Rempel, commanding officer for the Castlegar Squadron, was very pleased with how the afternoon went.

“It’s nice to see cadets from Cranbrook and Grand Forks and Castlegar and I think it went very well,” he said. “It’s nice to see lots of cadets come out and do this. It’s quite a life skill.”

Local breeder Til Niquidet is celebrating after one of her dogs, Flash, won Best in Breed at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show (WKC) in New York City on Feb. 15 and 16.

WKC is the most prestigious dog show in North America. Five dogs are allowed to compete in each breed by invitation only.

Anyone else who gets into the show is by lottery.

The five dogs there by invitation are always the top five winners in North America. Basically, it’s the

best of the best in each breed.

“The dogs that Flash competed against — there were 15 duck tollers, and of those, there were several Best in Show,” said Til Niquidet, Flash’s breeder. “There was one dog that was the winner of the Canadian and the American National toller show, and he [Flash] beat that dog for Best in Breed.”

Niquidet said it wasn’t unexpected that he could win, and the nicest part about winning is the fact that Flash is actually retired.

“He’s turning eight, and we had decided not to show him anymore.

We just bring him out for the occasional show, and this happened

teering their time in the Boundary to help provide tax help for those who may not be able to afford it. People Helping People is the name of the group and they do the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) out of Service BC in Grand Forks.

CVITP is a collaboration between community organizations and the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

Heading the program is Lorraine Dick.

“We are in our fifth year of involvement with the tax program (People Helping People) for the citizens of Grand Forks, Greenwood, Christina Lake and Rock Creek… and now Midway,” said Dick. “We’re also doing a second year at the Gospel Chapel’s Blessings Boutique. We’ve had a clinic at Christina Lake for two consecutive years but decided not to return this year.”

The volunteers along with Dick, who started the program, are Karen Head and Karen Johnson, who have also both been with the pro-

gram since the beginning; Jennifer Jenkins and Ursula Flury (second year) and first timers Virginia Holmes, Terry Lemke Mooney and Vera Ellefson.

Eligible for the program are: single persons earning up to $30,000; couples earning up to $40,000; and one adult with one child earning up to $35,000. There is no cost to use the program. For each additional dependent you have, add $2,500 to the family income. You should not have interest income of more than $1,000.

The program runs from March 2 until April 29. Clinic times and locations are: Phoenix room in the Service BC building, 174 Market Avenue, Grand Forks, Wednesdays — drop off 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., pick up 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.; Main foyer, Gospel Chapel, 7048 Donaldson Drive, Grand Forks, Fridays from noon to 2 p.m.; and at Community Futures, 245 Copper Street, Greenwood,Wednesdays from 2 to 4 p.m.

Black bear sightings TRAIL — Better beware because bears are already waking up and raking through garbage cans in Trail neighbourhoods.

Activity has been reported in the Glenmerry area, including the sighting of a large black bear, confirms Sharon Wieder from Rossland/Trail Wildsafe BC. “The warm weather definitely woke them up in those areas where there isn’t a lot of snow,” she explained. “We had that whole week when it was pretty mild, and it’s not unusual for them to do that.”

Black bears typically maintain fat reserves throughout winter, and Wieder says they generally don’t wake up in an aggressive pursuit of food.

Unfortunately for the animals, however, they’ll follow their noses to wherever a whiff of garbage is coming from.

“Behaviour-wise, they are not necessarily any different,” she said. “But definitely, this time of year, people don’t think about them being out and about and they aren’t as careful with keeping garbage secure, which really is the big problem.”

And, an easy food source spells trouble down the road for both homeowner and bear.

“People need to realize if they leave stuff out now, and the bear gets into the habit of it, they are going to be around all summer long,” Wieder added.

“They’ll just keep coming back, hoping to get more.”

Hopefully, early black bear sightings won’t portend another lethal year for the bruins.

Nine bears were destroyed in Rossland and 11 in Trail last year, compared to the previous year when none were killed in Rossland and two in Trail.

According to Wildsafe BC’s year-end report, 2015 saw the largest increase in bear activity since 2013, and the highest number of bears destroyed since 2010.
