Central Alberta artist unveils new exhibit in Red Deer Larry Reese has explored several creative ventures over the years

L

ocal artist Larry Reese has a way of drawing folks in via his extensive collections of paintings, but that is only one of his many modes of expression.

Reese is also a film instructor at Red Deer College, a filmmaker, a director, an accomplished actor and a musician.

These days, his latest exhibit, ‘The Eclectic Eccentric’, features paintings, illustrations, sketches, sculptures, films, and music. The showcase runs through to the end of April at the Welikoklad Event Centre Gallery in downtown Red Deer.

An opening reception is set for March 4th at 7 p.m. Other highlights of the evening will be a screening of Mapping Creativity, an insightful documentary Reese was involved with a few years back.

It’s a 45-minute version of the original film. Musicians Corey and Craig Gomez will also be on hand.

Meanwhile, as described in a release, “At once a landscape painter, you will also see abstractions, illuminations, and interpretations of all-encompassing life.”

Many of the landscape paintings will have a recognizable feel to them, having captured the natural beauty of Central Alberta vistas. Others reflect environments around Yellowknife, which offered a number of challenging yet mesmerizing images all their own. “I’ve got three big paintings that reflect my impressions of the Canadian shield around Yellowknife.

“Old-town Yellowknife which is situated right on the edge of a lake is one of the most colourful, eccentric places you can imagine. There’s lots of houseboats - one will be bright pink, another one is yellow - I mean Canary yellow - and another is cobalt blue. And they’re right next to each other, so there is this waterfront of colour.”

Reese points out that one of the pieces is done in his ‘solid colour style’, which of course is injected with his unstoppable creativity. There’s almost a ‘pulse’ that empowers his works - many feel somehow alive - almost like the viewer could walk right into the unique tones of ‘movement’ of the various pieces.

Sometimes, it’s almost like the process is self-directing - “It’s like nature is telling what to do,” he laughs, referring to the elements in a given painting.

He also paints in a style he calls ‘fantasy realism’ - where there is a realistic nature to it but it’s intricately stylized at the same time. Overall, he’s always on the lookout to broaden his scope in terms of expressing himself.

Reese originally hails from Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, and immigrated to Canada in 1961. Painting proved an early interest, as did music.

These experiences, soaking up the richness of various cultures, also seeped into his work. Reese’s paintings are consistently bold, intricate and strikingly original interpretations of the world around him.

In 1974, he earned a Bachelor of Music in composition from the University of

Alberta and has composed numerous songs, stage musicals, and film scores.

Television movie credits include Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Oklahoma City – A Survivor’s Story and In Cold Blood.

He’s also played recurring roles on several series such as Jake and the Kid, North of 60, and Lonesome Dove.

As an acting teacher he has taught at the University of Alberta, Grant MacEwan College and at RDC for many years where is the head of performance for the Motion Picture Arts Program.

In terms of acting, he’s appeared in such acclaimed films as Brokeback Mountain and Unforgiven, both of which were partly filmed in Alberta.

As for the current exhibit, Reese appreciates the conversations he has with folks who drop by to check out the art.

“I’m excited and terrified to get feedback from people,” he said with a laugh.

“On the other hand, why are you an artist if you aren’t going to put the work out there? That’s always the challenge - if you aren’t willing to take that risk and put it out there, and open yourself up to criticism and whatever, then I think you stop being an artist. You get too complacent.”

These days, Reese has his eye on retiring from teaching in a few years, so to that end, he’s establishing himself more and more as a painter. But teaching has, in its own way, provided him with a rich education as well.

For Reese, having several means of artistic expression in his life brings a sense of renewal.

He has pointed out that they tend to ‘feed’ each other. Inspiration for one genre infuses a new creativity to be expressed in another way – and so on.

“You can’t call up your subconscious at will,” he once explained of the mysteries of creative expression. “But you can plant seeds.”

As for his own path, it has been - and continues to be - an amazing source of fulfillment.

“I think I’m a successful painter if somebody looks at my painting and can take a trip ‘into’ the painting,” he explained.

“I want people to feel the temperature, to feel the weather, the wind, and to feel the sun,” he said. “That, I think, would be a huge accomplishment.

“For me, I’ve always liked a painting that can take me on a journey.” editor@reddeerexpress.com

Closing arguments to be held tomorrow in murder trial

BY ERIN FAWCETT RED DEER EXPRESS Closing arguments are expected to take place in Red Deer’s Court of Queen’s Bench tomorrow for the trial of a man held to determine whether or not he is criminally responsible for murdering a woman in 2011.

Mark Lindsay, 29, was charged in 2011 after the body of his then girlfriend, Dana Turner, 31, was found in a ditch near Innisfail. Lindsay, who is the adopted son of a former Edmonton police chief, is also charged with offering indignity to a body and obstruction of justice.

Lindsay has admitted to murdering Turner by stabbing her in the eyes with a pencil, strangling her and running over her with a vehicle, but the trial is being held to determine whether or not he is criminally responsible for Turner’s death.

Dr. Peter Rodd, a forensic psychologist testified last week that he does not believe that Lindsay suffers from mental illness, as evidenced by his actions during interviews with Lindsay and Lindsay’s behaviour while incarcerated. “(His actions are) not consistent with mental illness - they are organized and purposeful,” said Rodd. “There is no objective clinical data to say that Mr. Lindsay was suffering from psychosis episodes.”

Records from various sources were entered into court record to show examples of deliberate behaviour by Lindsay as opposed to mental illness.

Court heard that in 2012 Lindsay engaged normally with guards at a remand centre but also forced himself to vomit as well as pick at the door aggressively

and leave feces on the floor. “This shows volitional behaviour rather than mental illness,” said Rodd.

That same year records show that Lindsay slit his wrists because he wanted to see a psychologist so he could be given medications that he wanted.

Another record showed a staff member at the prison stating Lindsay was, “Largely not responsive most days but there was a ‘gamesy’ quality to some of his interactions.”

Court heard that one psychologist reported there was no evidence of Lindsay having a mental illness and that he was mostly medication-seeking.

“His behaviour seemed to be purposeful and not an example of disorganized behaviour,” said Rodd, adding Lindsay’s behaviour is as a result of being incarcerated. “His behaviour doesn’t support the presence of mental illness.

“There is a suggestion that he is aware of the wrongfulness of his actions. He is

aware of what his acts would do - that stabbing an individual in the eye would result in their rapid demise - so there was some appreciation for how his actions would end,” he said, adding that Lindsay had a history of substance abuse, a history of violence and a history of impulsiveness - all contributing factors to Turner’s death in his opinion.

AFCA getting ready for 2016 Carnaval The Alberta French Canadian Association (ACFA) is gearing up for the 2016 Carnaval event on March 12th.

The Carnaval kicks off with First Nations singers and drummers at noon, followed by the annual raising of the Francophone-Alberta flag ceremony. Crowds will gather at Pioneer’s Lodge for an afternoon of music, cultural celebration, food and entertainment.

The family-friendly event will feature kids’ activities like face painting and interactive musical experiences.

Local ACFA Regional Director Bruno Collet said the organization is looking forward to another chance to share French culture with the community.

“It’s a family event. We know how the economy is, and we want people to know this isn’t a fundraiser. We just want people to come and have fun without having to spend a lot of money,” Collet said.

“The event is pay as you go. People can come in the site, enjoy the games and the music and only buy food if they want to. People don’t have a lot of money right now, and that’s okay. We just encourage them to come in and check out the live music, get their kids’ faces painted if they wish and leave without it costing them a penny.”

Traditional Francophone cultural aspects of the event include deli-

cious maple taffy on snow, French-Canadian pea soup, BBQ’ed hot dogs, hot chocolate and musical presentations. Local musician and winner of the Best Saxophone at the 2015 Calgary Blues Festival Claude Godin will be on site entertaining guests with his talents, presenting songs in French as well as English. In addition there will be a Francophone Rock-Pop group of five called ‘Pascal Lecours et les Mauvais Caractères’.

ACFA takes pride in developing relationships between French-speaking people, and Anglophone communities.

Collet explained when the local ACFA chapter was formed it was originally a way to connect Quebecois people in Alberta. Now, it’s an open, inclusive space where all French-speaking people can connect and non-French speaking people can engage in French cultures.

“All of our staff and volunteers on site for Carnaval are bilingual in French and English. That way, it’s not exclusive to the French community - it’s something everyone can attend,” Collet said.

“We have a lot of Anglophone friends, and it’s very,

very important to ACFA that we reach out to them so we can share our traditions with them. We know that a lot of Francophones have Anglophone spouses and friends, so a lot of our activities are bilingual or even sometimes entirely in English. That’s not a problem with us. ” This is the seventh edition of the Carnaval. Collet added the event has been extremely well received in the community in previous years and he hopes to see the same again.

“This year, we’ve got people from the Kerry Wood Nature Centre and Fort Normandeau who are going to be bringing in fur trade items and explain how it was done in our area,” Collet said.

“They’re also going to be bringing a collection of ancient musical instruments with someone to explain them.”

Our team of volunteers work hard year-round to organize a fun-filled Carnaval. “Without them, we would not be at our seventh edition,” mentioned Collet.

According to Collet, the local ACFA chapter’s jurisdiction reigns from Rocky Mountain House to Stettler, and from Innisfail to Ponoka. Collet said there are approximately 2,400 French-speaking people in this region, but stressed that ACFA is open to anyone wishing to engage in French cultural activities.

RCMP focus on ‘Crotches Kill’ campaign February marked Distracted Driving Awareness Month, but really it’s a year long reminder of the importance of keeping your eyes on the road.

As part of the campaign last month, Red Deer RCMP and Community Peace Officers (CPOs) focused on distracted drivers in a targeted traffic campaign. In the space of an hour on Feb. 18th, Red Deer RCMP Traffic members and CPOs checked vehicles at roving locations through the City and issued two distracted driving tickets, two tickets for drivers not having registration and one ticket for an expired driver’s license. As well, one warrant was executed.

During this time frame, one distracted driving investigation turned into an impaired driving investigation, and RCMP arrested a 29-year-old woman.

This was undertaken as part of a provincial campaign entitled ‘Crotches Kill’ which focuses on the danger to other drivers, passengers and pedestrians when drivers take their focus away from the road.

Examples of distracted driving include using hand-held phones, texting, emailing, reading, writing, grooming and typing in GPS co-ordinates while behind the wheel.

The penalties are also stiff, on Jan. 1st, the penalty for drivers caught with distracted driving was changed to a $287 fine plus three demerit points.

But the message continues to fall on deaf ears. Who hasn’t sat behind a driver at a red light whose head appears down and they are clearly not paying attention and start moving with the traffic?

Blasting one’s horn offers a moment of satisfaction of ‘catching’ that person in the act. But it’s clearly not a long-term solution.

It’s surprising that people can’t resist the temptation of their phones, even on a short drive within the City. It continues to get worse and become more of an obsession.

According to the Alberta Motor Association’s web site cell phones are one of the most common distractions for driv-

ers. Drivers engaged in text messaging on a cell phone are 23 times more likely to be involved in a crash or near crash event compared with non-distracted drivers.

Driver distraction is a factor in about four million motor vehicle crashes in North America each year. As well, children are four times more distracting than adults as passengers, and infants are eight times more distracting than adults as passengers and international research shows that 20% to 30% of all collisions involve driver distraction.

The AMA web site also states that since Alberta began levying fines on distracted drivers on Sept. 1st, 2011, close to 80,000 drivers have been convicted. From April 2014 to March 2015, more than 27,000 drivers were caught and charged with distracted driving. Of those caught and charged, the greatest offenders were drivers aged 35 to 44.

“Distracted driving reduces your awareness of what’s happening on the road and limits your ability to make the split-second decisions that will avoid collisions,”

said Sgt. Al Nickolson of the Red Deer RCMP. “It only takes a second for a collision to occur, and every collision has the potential to be deadly.”

RCMP charge drivers for these distracted behaviours: using handheld electronic devices including cell phones; texting; writing or sketching; reading printed materials; entering information on GPS devices; personal grooming; and allowing a person, animal, or thing to impede their safe operation of the vehicle, which includes rowdy passengers, dogs on laps, and large items hanging from the rearview mirror. In a recent incident, a Red Deer driver was charged for flossing their teeth while driving.

Red Deer RCMP will continue to set up campaigns around the city targeting drivers who choose to make dangerous driving decisions, and urge drivers to pledge to leave their phones alone. Police further encourage drivers to take the pledge on their own social media accounts by using the hashtag #CrotchesKill and to challenge others in the community to do the same.

The good news at the heart of rising food prices Canada’s food inflation rate remains at 4%, yet there are encouraging signs for the consumer.

Statistics Canada’s recent consumer price index numbers, for example, show that the gap between the general inflation rate and food inflation is shrinking – the general inflation rate now stands at 2%, its highest point in nearly two years.

Also reassuring is that Canadians’ wages are increasing, at a rate of 2.8%.

That means an increased number of Canadian families can cope with higher food prices.

In addition, tumbling prices at the gas pumps help consumers deal with higher food prices. Since July 2015, gas prices have fallen by more than 24% in many regions of the

country. Over the past six months, a family with one vehicle could have saved more than $300 on gas.

Those savings would at least double for families with two cars. And that doesn’t include gains from lower heating costs.

During the same period, the average family would have paid about $170 more for food, compared to last year. So the current fuel and food expenditure ratio helps the average family.

But what are families doing with the balance of

their energy savings?

Recent consumer surveys suggest that Canadians will use their savings to renovate their homes, take well-deserved vacations or even save for retirement.

But the latest credit card data hint at something else. U.S. reports suggest that many families have increased their spending by going out to restaurants. It is believed that $3 in $10 saved at the pump is spent on out of household food consumption. In other words, fuel savings are fueling food consumption outside the home. The same could be happening in Canada, according to market-based data.

So despite higher input costs for restaurant operators, fast food and full service alike, financial results

have been robust, for the most part.

Market research can’t paint a perfectly clear picture based on food purchasing trends. However, money never lies and when food expenditures themselves are examined, some trends tell another story.

Especially noteworthy are recent food retail sales numbers reported

by StatsCan. While supermarket and grocery store sales dropped by a whopping 1.7% during the lucrative month of December, sales at specialty and convenience stores were on the rise. The shift towards smaller scale stores and time-saving food purchasing habits, which has been developing for some time, is being more clearly reflected in the data.

This suggests that an

increasing number of Canadian consumers are willing to spend more when shopping for food.

Major grocers, reacting to this seismic shift in recent years, have made a series of subtle yet significant strategic changes.

The average consumer’s grocery store visit is five minutes shorter than just two years ago. However, an increasing number of men are now active food shoppers. And 60% of those men want to get their grocery shopping done as quickly as possible. So the number of minutes spent in stores is a metric that can be skewed in several ways.

An increasing number of consumers arrive at the grocery store with a preplanned strategy - a clear intent to buy or not buy certain products. Smaller

outlets and convenient stores certainly appeal to those who are pressed for time and know what they’re looking for.

Recent StatsCan numbers suggest we are witnessing the hyper fragmentation of food supply, driven by increasing demand-based pressures.

The Canadian economy is generating higher wages (with the exception of Alberta), a higher inflation rate and more options for the food shopper. And lower energy costs seem to are providing a boost for the food and hospitality industry. That’s good news for the economy as a whole.

STARS officials call on Albertans to support lottery Early bird ticket cutoff March 2nd at midnight with lottery cutoff March 23rd

BY ZACHARY CORMIER RED DEER EXPRESS For the first time in its history, the STARS Alberta Lottery is in danger of not selling out, organizers say.

During a press conference on Monday morning, STARS announced that the current economic climate has caused a slowdown in ticket sales for the 2016 lottery, and organizers encouraged Albertans to participate and buy tickets ahead of the March 23rd deadline.

“We are just over 70 per cent sold out right now, and in prior years we have sold out at this time, so we are behind and look for Albertans to help us out this year,” said Jeff Quick, the chief financial officer for STARS.

$250 ticket packages and anything you can do would be greatly appreciated.”

In 2014-2015, STARS flew a total of 1,839 missions out of their three bases in Alberta and their teams fly an average of five times every day and many of those missions save lives.

“It supports STARS and I know it’s an economic downturn in the province but emergencies don’t wait,” said Rebecca Fillinger, a mother from Rocky Mountain House whose son Rowan’s life has been saved twice by STARS’ service - once when Rebecca suffered an infection while she was pregnant with him and then again after Rowan fell backwards into the family fire pit at the age of two and suffered severe, life-threatening burns.

“If it wasn’t for STARS, who saved my life and saved his twice, he wouldn’t be here,” she said.

In response to the economic hardship in the province, Quick said some of the larger ticket packages have been reconfigured into smaller, less expensive ones to make them more affordable to Albertans.

“Previously, people have bought the $100 and $250 ticket packages, but of course with the current economy there’s not that kind of money around. People are looking at the $25 and $60 packages, so we created more of those,” he said, adding that while the lottery not selling out would not be devastating to STARS, however it would mean the organization would have to cut back in non-essential areas.

“We continue to operate. We’re here for the patients, we’re an essential service.

We as a not-for-profit always run our business prudently and so we’re always watching our revenues and expenses, so we’ll be fine,” he said.

“Like other organizations we’re cutting back in the areas that we can, but we obviously don’t cut back in the essential service of our pilots and our medical crew and meeting the needs of the patients.”

The Early Bird deadline for the 2016 STARS Alberta Lottery is March 2nd at midnight with the final cut off on March 23rd.

STARS is a community-based non-profit charitable organization that provides specialized emergency medical care and helicopter transportation for critically ill and injured patients. The annual Alberta Lottery is the organization’s largest source of funding in the province and raises enough money each year to cover a third of STARS’ total operating costs.

Last year the lottery netted the organization $11 million.

Quick said part of the reason the lottery is taking longer than usual to sell out is because of the economic conditions in Alberta.

“The whole province is experiencing it and we’re no different than any other organization in this province,” he said, adding that STARS is encouraging Albertans to help out in any way that they can.

Orthodox church to open in Red Deer this spring

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS A Red Deer congregation is happy the grand opening date of their brand new building is set for this May. Morris Brese, parish council president of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church here in Red Deer, said after 14 years of meeting in various locations around the City it will be good to finally have a permanent facility. Lately, services have been held in the Highland Green Community Hall.

The new building, which is currently nearing completion, is located at 107 Vermont Ave. in the Vanier Woods subdivision.

A special consecration service is planned for May 22nd.

And even though the project is almost finished, Brese said additional support from the community is welcome.

“Anyone that would be willing to donate some time or materials to help us with painting and drywall - it would really be appreciated because the budget is getting a little tight towards the end,” he said, adding to date there are about 30 official members. He expects more to come by once the church opens.

“We welcome all orthodox Christians and visitors to come and worship with us. We have a priest right now who only comes up twice a month. But we are hopeful that in the future, we will be able to afford a full-time, permanent priest.

That is one of our objectives.”

Over the past couple of years, the fundraising campaign has included fundrais-

ing presentations to parishes and lay organizations across the province.

Gasoline Alley Career High School opens The Gasoline Alley Career High School officially opened its doors last week.

This school has been serving Chinook’s Edge students for over 20 years, mostly from its popular location in central Red Deer. After spending the past year at its transition site at Penhold Crossing Secondary School, the doors opened to its new permanent home in Gasoline Alley. Like many others, Grade 12 student Sara Breemersch followed this Career High through these moves without question.

“Honestly, I’ve always loved this school and now the new setting is even more awesome,” said Breemersch, who has been with the school since Grade 10.

“The reason I’ve been able to take my entire high school here is because the staff makes sure I am successful. I work full time, and they’ve made it possible for me to still complete school and prepare for college. There are less distractions here, lots of individual teacher time, and the ability to go at my own pace. It’s just been an amazing experience for me and everyone has helped me do my very best.”

Unlike traditional schools which involve government funding to open, Career High schools typically involve rental agreements at ‘storefront’ locations which are more easily accessible to students.

Staff and students were acknowledged for their patience and understanding throughout the transitions to their permanent location.

“There is steadfast leadership from everyone at this school, and the staff have worked tirelessly to ensure this beautiful new site also feels warm and familiar to students,” said Superintendent Kurt Sacher. “Gasoline Alley Career High School is an example of many people working together and working hard, because we know this is right for students.

This staff has been together for many years and they brought their years of educational expertise to this project every step of the way. We couldn’t be more grateful for their efforts - they have set this school up to be a cultural and academic force for students for years to come.”

‘CAWESino’ gala fundraiser returns for second year

The Central Alberta Women’s Emergency Shelter (CAWES) decided to try something new last year with the James Bond themed event. According to CAWES Executive Director Ian Wheeliker,

the event was very well received and the organization is thrilled to be hosting it for the second year.

The casino gala takes place on March 11th with cocktails starting at 6 p.m.

Tickets are $200 per (with $120 worth of the ticket being a tax receipt) and tables are available for $1,600. All funds raised from the event go towards supporting CAWES programs.

This year, the gala will be specifically supporting the

children’s programming at the facility. “This is our second year and the folks that attended last year told us that it was the best gala that they’d been to in years,� Wheeliker said. “Everybody really enjoyed themselves. As you walk in, you’ll be greeted by our team of volunteers and committee members with a martini and then you’ll be off to the races in terms of checking out the auction items and getting

ready for a great evening.�

The event is being held at the Sheraton Hotel in the Tuscany Ballroom.

The evening begins with cocktails prior to a fourcourse gourmet meal, followed by a live auction.

Wheeliker said CAWES receives government funding for the women’s programs, but that all the additional children’s programs have been brought to life through community funds. “Our work with the children is very important. If we don’t help the children with services and supports that they need now, the likelihood of them becoming victims or perpetrators later in life is very high statistically,� he explained. “Approximately half of the people we are helping every day are children.

We’ve done some really good work with mothers and children over the years and we’ve got to be able to keep the work up.�

MEN ARRESTED AFTER ROAD RAGE INCIDENT Red Deer RCMP took an

adult male and a male youth into custody last week after a road rage incident in which the two males waved an imitation firearm at another driver then confronted him in the Bower neighbourhood.

The two suspects re-entered their car and were immediately intercepted by RCMP in the parking lot of the Bower Mall.

RCMP executed a high risk arrest of the two males, which is standard procedure when there is any perceived risk to the safety of the public.

The two were taken into custody without incident, and RCMP seized a replica BB gun.

No one was injured in this incident.

Charges are pending and RCMP will issue an update with the name and charges against the adult male once those charges have been sworn before the courts.

The identity of the youth will not be released in accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Blackfalds RCMP request the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect who stole a vehicle and seriously injured the owner.

On Feb. 25th at 5:20 a.m., Blackfalds RCMP responded to a rural residence in Red Deer County to a victim who had been seriously injured.

The victim was assaulted by an unknown suspect, who then fled the scene in the victim’s vehicle.

The victim was transported to the hospital where he is being treated for his serious injuries.

The victim’s vehicle has recently been located and recovered by the police.

The suspect is described as a Caucasian male, between 5’5 - 5’6 tall with a skinny build.

He had short hair, Cameo pants, a jacket and black toque.

The Blackfalds RCMP are requesting the public’s assistance in identifying the suspect in this matter.

ARMED ROBBERY WITH A FIREARM On Feb. 24th at 10:30 p.m., the Gasoline Alley Liquor Store was robbed.

A lone male entered the business and picked up a bottle of liquor.

The male walked up to the cashier, demanded money and produced a black handgun.

Approximately $370 in cash was taken from the business.

The suspect departed in a white or silver car.

PROPERTY RECOVERED On Jan. 15th the Blackfalds RCMP attended a rural property west of Red Deer near Hwy. 596 and Township Road 382 where a number of stolen items were located.

The RCMP response was in relation to information received from a member of the public.

Members of the Blackfalds RCMP were on scene throughout the day recovering the property which included one Ford truck, two ATV’s, two motorcycles, truck box tool boxes, various tools, a truck deck and ATV ramps.

This matter is still under investigation by the Blackfalds RCMP. Investigators are asking anyone who may have information regarding this occurrence to contact Blackfalds RCMP at 403-885-3300.

COURT BRIEFS PRELIMINARY HEARING DELAYED A preliminary hearing for two men accused of murdering a Castor-area family that was set to begin in Red Deer court on Monday, has been delayed until March 7th.

Jason Gordon Klaus has been charged with three counts of first degree murder and one count of arson in relation to the deaths of his father Gordon Klaus, 61, his mother Sandra Klaus, 62 and his sister Monica Klaus, 40, in December 2013.

Joshua Gregory Frank has also been charged with three counts of first degree murder in relation to the deaths as well as one count of arson and one count of injuring or endangering an animal in relation to the shooting death of the family dog.

The preliminary hearing will determine whether or not there is enough evidence to hold a trial.

The remains of Gordon and Monica were found in what was left of a burnt-out house in Castor on Dec. 8th, 2013.

The body of Sandra has never been found and during a press conference in Calgary in 2014, RCMP Insp. Tony Hamori, operations officer for the Calgary RCMP Major Crimes Unit, said police believe her remains were consumed by the fire.

Hamori added Jason was arrested in August 2014 at Monica’s residence in Stettler while Frank was arrested at his brother’s residence in Castor.

He said the arrests were made after a “Key piece of evidence” was found by an RCMP dive team from B.C. in Big Knife Provincial Park during a dive on July 26th and July 27th, 2014. He said that evidence played a major role in laying the charges against the two suspects.

RODNEY ARENS GRANTED BAIL After last month’s decision by the Alberta Court of Appeal which ruled that Rodney Arens will get a new trial, Arens has been granted bail.

Justice Kirk Sisson sentenced Arens to five years and six months in prison in June 2014. He was given credit for 185 days for time served before and during the trial. His sentence also included a driving prohibition for 10 years.

Arens was found guilty of impaired driving causing

death, impaired driving causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing death, dangerous driving causing bodily harm and breach of recognizance.

Those convictions were overturned last month in the Alberta Court of Appeal.

Last week, Arens was released on a number of conditions, one of which is that he is to reside and work for a friend who has stepped forward to act as a guardian.

During his bail hearing in Red Deer’s Court of Queen’s Bench last week, Justice Monica Bast warned Arens after noting he had five condition breach convictions while on release for the charges before his first trial.

“I suspect this is your last chance at liberty,” she said, adding that before his previous trial, the crown tried to revoke Arens’ bail for breaches but were unsuccessful in doing so. “If you are going to breach your terms, you are probably unlikely to be released before trial.”

Arens will return to the Court of Queen’s Bench in Red Deer on March 7th.

MAN CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED MURDER IN COURT Dwayne Heywood made another appearance in Red Deer provincial court last week.

Heywood, 45, was arrested on Dec. 27th by Innisfail RCMP on outstanding warrants of attempted murder for an offence that took place Dec. 21st near Eckville.

At approximately 11 p.m., the RCMP were conducting patrols in the town of Bowden when they spotted Heywood in a stolen GMC Sierra truck on Cottonwood Road near RR 10. When police attempted to pull the vehicle over it failed to stop and a pursuit began out of Bowden where the truck struck a power pole, unoccupied parked vehicle and an electrical box. The vehicle continued onto Hwy. 2A where police were able to deploy a spike belt to ensure public safety which the fleeing vehicle drove over. The truck then drove into an open field where the deflating tires brought the vehicle to a stop.

The driver, who police identified as Heywood, then fled on foot where he was arrested at 11:30 p.m., a short distance

Local history of the Hebrideans - part one There has been a lot of discussion in the media in the past year about immigration.

Therefore, this may be a time to reflect back on one of the more significant organized immigration efforts in Central Alberta – the relocation of hundreds of men, women and children from the West Hebrides of Scotland to this region in the mid1920s.

The period following the end of the First World War was a very harsh one for much of the western world.

Millions of young men had been lost in the War, or else returned home with horrific injuries to their bodies and minds.

The economy had been shattered. Unemployment and financial destitution were widespread.

An energetic Roman Catholic priest, Father R. Andrew MacDonell, who had served as a military chaplain during the War, decided to do something about the enormous distress in his native Scotland.

DAWE ern Canada had successfully provided new lives and new hopes for large numbers before the War. MacDonell quite reasonably felt that it was a good way of finding solutions to the problems of the postWar world.

In 1922, he was part of a four person delegation to tour western Canada.

He decided that the Red Deer area and parts of northeastern Alberta provided the best prospects for his plans. The regions were part of a well-established agricultural heartland.

Moreover, there was a large former Indian Industrial School just west of Red Deer.

Father MacDonell worked ceaselessly on the other advance arrangements.

He struck an agreement with the C.P.R. to provide sea and rail transport for the immigrants. He contracted with the Soldiers’ Settlement Board to help with the training of settlers and the location of potential farms throughout Alberta.

Finally, while Father MacDonell worked under the auspices of the Scottish Immigrant Aid Society, he relied extensively on the support of the federal Department of Immigration and the provincial Department of Agriculture.

There was considerable excitement in the community when the first groups of Hebrideans arrived in Red Deer on May 8th, 1923.

The first train came into C.P.R. station in the morning and then another at the C.N.R. station in the afternoon.

An estimated 2,000 people turned out for the welcoming ceremonies, not far short of the entire population of the City.

The dignitaries present made lofty speeches– referring to the Hebrideans as a, “Class of people that keep their Sabbath” and as “loyal subjects” of the British Empire.

Consequently, a number of local residents were recruited to speak Gaelic to the Hebrideans upon their arrival.

Over the next few weeks, the Hebrideans, who had largely been fishermen, were trained in farming and English. Father John McMillan, another Roman Catholic priest, was assigned to help with the resettlement.

As each settler and family were deemed ready, they were sent out to farms west of Red Deer, or in the Westlock and Vermillion areas.

However, before long grumblings began to

emerge. Rumours began to circulate that the Hebrideans were given special favours, such as an exemption from taxation, and grants, not loans. Others claimed that Soldiers Settlement Board was displacing veterans to secure farms for the new settlers. Consequently, a public meeting was organized by the Sylvan Lake Board of Trade to dispel these rumours.

On the other hand, stories of unhappy settlers began to circulate. For some, the new strange life proved to be overwhelming. In several cases, the promised assistance in terms of loans, agricultural equipment

and small houses on the new farms failed to materialize. In quite a few instances, the land provided by the S.S.B. were locations already abandoned by veterans as being almost impossible to farm.

Nevertheless, the recruitment and transport of settlers, primarily from the Barra, South Uist and Benbecula Islands, continued. Father MacDonell and the others with the Scottish Immigrant Aid Society, tried to secure new resources and adopt new plans to deal with the problems. CENTRAL ALBERTA FAMILY HISTORY FAIR

Central Albertans can learn how to get started with genealogy research at a free Family History Fair on March 19th.

Regardless of what skeletons you uncover digging around in the past; it’s thrilling to find out more about your ancestors. Just ask the growing number of people who have made genealogy North America’s second most popular hobby – next to gardening.

“It is exciting when we learn new things about our ancestors and can add them to our family tree,” said Peter Darby, an active member of the Red Deer branch of the Alberta Genealogy Society. “The Internet has really helped.

So many records are being digitized and each week there are millions and millions of records being added to web sites.”

Many people are interested in knowing more about their ancestors, but they just don’t know where to start. The Red Deer RootsTech Family History Fair on March 19th hopes to change that by offering a full day of free genealogy workshops and instruction. The event will run from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. with presentations by local family history educators and pre-recorded speakers.

The Family History Centre at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Red Deer (3002 – 47th Ave.) will also be open and volunteers will be available to assist individuals oneon-one to trace their own family tree using the latest genealogy web sites and tools.

HOME SALES DOWN Residential sales reported through the MLS System of the Central Alberta Realtors Association numbered 168 units in January. This was a decline of 16.8% from January of 2015.

Sales activity in all of Alberta fell 13.8% from January of 2015 as well.

PERMIT VALUES START OFF STRONG IN 2016 Commercial and public building permit values in Red Deer remained strong in January compared to the same month last year.

KUB KAR RALLY ON MARCH 11TH AND 12TH The second annual Westerner Park Kub Kar Rally is set for March 11th-12th.

Cub car racing is a North American tradition.

Cub scouts with the help of scout leaders and parents build their own cars from kits containing a block of pine, plastic wheels and metal axels.

The cars must meet stringent specifications for length and weight and are carefully inspected and weighed before they are cleared for racing.

Once cleared, the cars are raced on specially designed tracks to determine which one is fastest.

The top cars receive trophies. Beavers and scouts have their own divisions and sometimes their own style of vehicles, but the principles are the same.

On March 11th and 12th, more than 250 scouts from 16 scout troops in the Red Deer LDS and Waskasoo Areas around Central Alberta will come together in one of the biggest racing events in the province. Boys from Red Deer, Lacombe, Olds, Stettler, Ponoka, Sylvan Lake and Rocky Mountain House will race off for first, second and third overall.

WILDLIFE CENTRE LANDS DONATION Medicine River Wildlife Centre has acknowledged Border Paving for their recent donation of $111,000 towards the Centre’s land preservation project.

This project was introduced for three main reasons - protect the forest and highly productive wetland from development, provide a sanctuary for the hundreds of species that call this land home such as Great Grey Owls, Sandhill Cranes, warblers and several species of rare plants and protect the privacy of the facility allowing for an increasing number of education programs and tourist opportunities to be offered.

This year promises to be an excellent year for the wildlife hospital and education centre located half an hour west of Innisfail as their land preservation, facility rebuild and additions to the already busy education programs are all moving strongly forward.

BY ZACHARY CORMIER RED DEER EXPRESS Award-winning country music star Johnny Reid is bringing his unique style to Red Deer next week when his What Love is All About tour rolls into the Centrium.

The tour, which stops in the City on March 5th, will feature songs from Reid’s latest album of the same name, as well as some old favourites.

“The title of the tour is ‘What Love is All About’, so my hope would be that people walk out of that room that night having somewhat of a better understanding of what love is really all about,” said the Scotland-born Canadian country artist.

This is not the first time that Reid has performed in Red Deer, and the singer-songwriter said he has fond memories of playing here.

“I played Red Deer many, many moons ago. I can remember playing the Arlington Inn in Red Deer, there was a wee pub in Red Deer and I played there many moons ago and I’ve played the Arena in Red Deer several times,” he said, adding that he’s looking forward to returning to the City.

“It’s wonderful. I’ve always enjoyed Red Deer.”

The CCMA-award winning artist moved to Canada from Scotland with his family when he was 15-years-old and went to high school in Brampton, Ont. before attending Bishop’s University, where he was a place kicker for the football team.

“When I graduated Bishop’s, my very first opportunity in the music business professionally was to write songs for Dreamworks and I signed a development deal as a songwriter and a development deal as an artist,” Reid recounted.

Since then, Reid has become a star in the Canadian country music world. He has released eight albums of original music and two Christmas records, all but two of which have been certified Platinum.

And Reid managed to continue that success with his latest album, What Love is All About, which was released last November, which he recorded with legendary producer Bob Ezrin.

“I had written a song called Fire It Up, which was released by me in Canada, but was actually recorded and released around the world

by Joe Cocker. Actually, God bless him, it was his last single before he passed on. But with the success of that single, I found myself with a lot of opportunities to go to different places to write songs,” he recalled, adding the songs he wrote while abroad would eventually become the basis for the new record.

“The one thing that I realized really quickly is that no matter the colour or the creed, we all kind of speak in the same language. They want me to write songs about people in their lives, they want me to write songs about people they’ve lost. It was all about the same story.”

All of that culminates in the album’s lead off and title single, which according to Reid, tells the story of a man who has kind of given up on love.

“Bob and I got to talking and I played him What Love is All About and he said ‘That’s a special song.

We need to record that song’.”

And the record continues to follow the same thread as Reid’s

distinct songwriting style shines through, from the touching sentiment of A Picture of You to the island vibes of What I’m Feeling Right Now, which features a guest verse from rapper Kardinal Offishall.

“I phoned up Kardinal and said ‘Hey man, listen I might send you a song you have a listen and then maybe you and I could collaborate on it.’ And he kept giggling and he said ‘Man I’m gonna be on a Johnny Reid album?’ So we were having a laugh about it because the majority of my audience has probably never heard of Kardinal and the majority of Kardinal’s audience has probably never heard of me. So it’s just a really cool opportunity to sort of spread

the love a wee bit,” Reid said of the song.

Reid added he tries to avoid defining his music as any one genre or style.

“I’ve always just sort of wrote the songs the way I wanted to write them, record them the way I want to record them, and perform them the way I want to perform them,” he said, adding that he draws inspiration for his music from many different sources, including his Scottish roots.

“Growing up in Scotland, Scottish people are always good story tellers, some of the best story tellers that I’ve ever met,” he said.

“My dad drove trucks and was a diesel mechanic, so he was on to

what you called ‘Western music,’ you know, Don McLean, Don Williams, Charlie Pride. These are a lot of the songs that I grew up listening to in my house.”

And much of that shines through in the new album, as well. Many of the new songs were written with other artists, which Reid said can help make the song the best that it can be.

“I’ve written a lot of songs by myself, but I feel like you miss kind of a worldly vibe,” he said.

“Life is a collaboration, so it’s, I find, really cool to sit down and get people’s perspective on things.”

Local country singer looking forward to CD release Aichelle’s love for music and performance began early on as she grew up singing in her church and excelled in Royal Conservatory classical piano.

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Local country singer Aleicia Aichelle is gearing up for the release of her first full-length CD Golden this spring - and the journey to get to this point has been an amazing story in and of itself.

Today, the vivacious, talented young woman is a confident and accomplished musician who has been singing since she was four. But about a decade ago, just prior to entering Red Deer College to study music, doctors found a large tumour on her thyroid gland. “When they removed it, they had to remove half of the thyroid gland as well because the tumour was wrapped around it,” she explained.

“It was about three weeks before Red Deer College that I had the surgery.

“I was told that everything would be fine and that it wouldn’t affect my voice,” she said.

But she woke up with no voice.

“I couldn’t talk at all. I had a tiny little whisper.”

She moved to Red Deer to start school, and after several weeks without improvement in her voice, she was sent for more follow-up where it was found that there had been complications resulting in permanent paralysis of her right vocal cord.

“I was told I would never sing again and most likely never talk normally again.”

She was devastated and recalls initially being angry at God, wondering why He had given her this gift only to see it taken away. But the support and prayers of friends, family and her parents and her strong and foundational Christian faith brought her to a place of hope.

And eventually, to complete healing.

“Three months went by and my speaking voice started to come back,” she said, adding the doctor told her that it just couldn’t be explained medically. “He said it didn’t make sense, and I said well, thousands of people are praying. People across Canada - families, relatives, churches and people I didn’t even know - were praying for me. I said that I had really believed I would be healed, and that this had all happened for a reason.

“So it’s really a story of hope.”

After six months her voice was fully restored and it was deemed to be nothing short of a miracle.

“It’s also really given me the reassurance that this is what I’m meant to do.”

Meanwhile, her new single Without June, which was produced in Red Deer, was released to Canadian Country Radio and iTunes this past January.

Indeed, Aichelle has had the privilege of writing with many songwriters in Nashville including Joe Forte, Greg Friia (Bonnie Tyler, Richie McDonald, Eric Paslay), Emilee Allan and Mary Danna (Trisha Yearwood, Trace Adkins, Carolyn Dawn Johnson).

As for Golden, the majority of the project was produced by Daniel Dennis at Prime Cut Studios in Nashville, with the single Without June produced by Heath West, Dennis, and Aichelle.

Being in ‘Music City’ also provided a source of rich inspiration in itself. “Every time I go there I’m just amazed. There is so much talent and everywhere you go there is amazing live music.

“You are just constantly being inspired.”

The City also provides a welcoming and warm environment for aspiring artists. “I find that most of the artists and musicians that I meet down there have been amazing - very welcoming and very down to earth.

It’s almost like a small town in a big city kind of thing - it really has that feel.”

West covered much of the instrumentation on the CD, plus he engineered the project and handled the final mastering.

“He has a rock background as well as country background, so he had some really cool ideas. I would have a general idea of what I wanted with a song, and he would bring ideas that I wouldn’t have thought of. It was a lot of fun.”

Born and raised in Kelowna, B.C.,

“I remember my first performance - it was a Christmas Eve service at my church and the pastor called all of the kids up.

We sang Away in a Manger, and then he asked if anyone knew the second verse.

I raised my hand, he put me on the microphone and I sang the second verse of Away in a Manger for about 1,500 people,” she explains with a laugh.

Aichelle was also introduced to country music at a young age by her parents, who have been devoted supporters of her musical dreams. Some of her first influences include Martina McBride, Faith Hill, Shania Twain, Dolly Parton, Paul Brandt, and CCR, to name a few.

“Country was definitely not considered ‘cool’ where I grew up, but it was my passion, a part of me, and I really didn’t care that the other kids teased me about it.

It has always been who I am and I have always stuck to my guns.

“It’s been my passion since my parents got me into it. For me, it’s about the stories behind the songs,” she said. “I love banjo, fiddle and mandolin. I love the country instruments - the pedal steel and the sounds of country.”

One of her dreams came true when she was invited to perform a ‘Writer’s In The Round’ show with three other songwriters at the legendary Bluebird Café Nashville in November of 2014.

“I also like how genuine country music is as well - it comes from a very real, honest place. That to me is what music is about - telling stories and sharing your heart with other people. So it was always my goal and dream to be a country music recording artist.” editor@reddeerexpress.com

You are the only change you will ever need Someone once said to me, “Do you want to be sick, broke and stupid forever?” Of course the answer was no! However, without any want to change, there can never be change.

So the challenge is what are you willing to change in 2016?

What is it that you need to let go of, in order for the change to happen? What toxins are stored in your body? Not just physically, but mentally, emotionally, relationally and spiritually? Nearing the end of 2015 we experienced loss, trauma and a host of other negative circumstances. Once again, I was reminded how much attention and energy is spent ruminating over the negative. All those negative circumstances that I could do nothing about were controlling me. I was faced with a choice - do I continue to hold onto the negative emotions and stay in fight, flight, and retreat mode? Or do I choose to let it go and experience healing and rebuilding?

Negative emotions become an addiction to our stress hormones, like cortisol and adrenaline. Unless we are able to move back into relaxation mode with hormones like DHEA and oxytocin, our bodies begin to self destruct. After this chain of events I was moving in that direction. Thoughts, emotions and beliefs generate change at a cellular level for growth and repair or protection. In protection mode there is no change, only degeneration. Mind and matter are not separate elements. I really had to choose. What thoughts would I start out with? What would I let go of?

For change to happen we first need a new judgment of self. Old self cannot create a new you. It does take information for transformation, but our number one goal is to help clients believe they are the change that needs to happen.

Medical inequality between men and women Today, it’s almost heresy to say there’s inequality between sexes.

Everyone is supposed to enjoy equal rights and I have no problem with this philosophy. But, in medicine, the sexes are far from equal. A report in the health publication, Nutrition Action, shows that a head-in-the-sands approach to sexual inequality can have a severe effect on the diagnosis and outcome of an illness.

Ask anyone what causes a heart attack and they are likely to respond, high cholesterol, lack of exercise, smoking, obesity or diabetes. Some might be aware that a heart attack produces the feeling of an elephant standing on your chest. They would be right as this is what often happens when men suffer a coronary attack. But what about women?

Females are more likely to describe their chest pain as sharp and burning.

They’re also more likely to complain of nausea, fatigue, difficulty breathing, dizziness or pain in the jaw, neck or upper body pain. Their pain is also more often related to stress than exertion. Their inability to recognize these symptoms can mean a delayed diagnosis when speedy treatment determines the outcome.

Women also believe that breast cancer is more often the reason they may die from a fatal disease.

But by age 55, heart disease deaths exceed death by breast cancer. By age 75, heart disease causes eight times more deaths than breast malignancy in women!

What about osteoarthritis, the wear-and-tear type, which affects so many people as we age?

Dr. Mary O’Connor, director of the Musculoskeletal Center at Yale School of Medicine, reports that women are more likely to suffer from arthritis of the knee. She says that women have weaker muscles resulting in less protection for the knee joint.

She adds that men produce more testosterone which builds stronger muscles.

And it’s the quadriceps, the muscles on the front of the leg, which aid the knee by absorbing the impact of walking or running. In addi-

tion, studies show that men requiring knee replacements are generally men with weaker quadriceps.

O’Connor stresses what I have often written, prevention of weight gain is mandatory. She says that just 10 pounds of extra weight increases the load on the knees by 30 to 60 pounds! So women who gain weight are four times more likely to develop arthritic knees.

There’s a good example of the ‘Gifford-Jones Law’, that one bad thing leads to another and another.

In this case weight gain

causes painful arthritis, so activity decreases, which then contributes to more obesity. The secret is to keep moving, which helps the flow of synovial fluid to lubricate the joint.

It’s also ironic that women suffer more strokes than men.

In this case it’s because they live longer when strokes are more common.

Again, the outcome often hinges on insufficient knowledge of this disease.

In 2011 the Heart and Stroke Foundation polled over 1,000 women and discovered that half did not

know that sudden weakness or numbness in the arm, leg or face was a sign of stroke. Even more were unaware that trouble speaking, vision problems or severe headache could be signs of stroke. So women were less likely to receive a speedy diagnosis and the drug tPA to dissolve the blood clot. This clot-buster must be given within three hours of the event to be effective.

Alas, women even get the short end of the deal when drinking an alcoholic drink. George Kobb at the National Institute

of Health says women are more affected by alcohol as their bodies contain less water to dilute the alcohol in their blood.

So I’m sorry, ladies, it’s not that I or other males dislike women.

It’s simply that sexual equality is unequal.

2 medium to large eggplants 3 cups shredded mozzarella 2 - 398ml or 14 oz cans of crushed tomatoes 3 cloves garlic, crushed 1 medium onion, diced olive oil, for frying Salt and pepper Slice the eggplant horizontally (1/4 inch slices) then lightly salt and place on a plate alternating with a sheet of paper towel. You should have four to five layers of eggplant and paper towel. Place a heavy object on top and let it sit for 15 - 20 minutes. This will soak up the moisture from the eggplant. Dice the onion and shred the cheese. Preheat oven to 350C. Add the diced onion to a pan and gently cook until translucent , then add the garlic for a few stirs and

Add a few more drops of oil to the pan and adjust the heat to medium - high. Add three to four slices of eggplant at a time making sure they don’t touch.

Fry for two to three minutes per side and remove, set aside. Add some of the tomatoes to a baking dish , just to cover . Season with crushed pepper as you go.

Alternate with layers of eggplant, mozzarella and a little more tomato. The final layer should be tomatoes and cheese. Bake for 25 - 30 minutes until the cheese is bubbly.

SPORTS Mixed results for RDC volleyball teams

BY ZACHARY CORMIER RED DEER EXPRESS The Red Deer College Kings and Queens competed at their respective ACAC Volleyball Championships last weekend, but they saw two very different results.

“We played at a fairly consistently high level. We had one pretty poorly played set in the third set there of the final but other than that we played pretty clean throughout the weekend,” said Kings Head Coach Aaron Schulha, whose team came away from their championship tournament at NAIT with the gold medal and a plane ticket to the CCAA National Championship at Douglas College in New Westminster, B.C. in two weeks.

As the number one ranked team in Canada going into the provincial tournament, the Kings were the odds on favourites to win the provincial crown, and they didn’t disappoint.

The tournament kicked off last Friday with the Kings facing off against the hosting NAIT Ooks, who came into the tourney in eighth place overall.

Right from the start, it was obvious why the Kings are number one in the country as they blew past NAIT in straight sets, winning 2521, 25-20, and 25-22. But the Ooks were just a warm up for the Kings, who lost just two sets the entire weekend, as their first win of the weekend set up a rematch of the 2015 ACAC Championship gold medal game, during which the Kings fell to the U of A- Augustana Vikings by just two points.

“We have quite a few guys back from last year, so for a lot of those guys it was great in terms of them being able to kind of make up for the sting of last year,” said Schulha.

This year’s rematch with Augustana went a little different than last year’s championship game as the Kings defeated the Vikings 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-17) to claim their spot in Saturday’s final for the third year in a row.

CLOSE CALL - Red Deer College hosted the provincial volleyball championship tournament this weekend. During a game on Friday afternoon, RDC Queen Miranda Dawe jumped to spike her shot, while being defended by Keyano Huskies players Neall Murphy and McKenna Barthel.

With the stage set for the final match between the Kings, the number one seed in the South, and the Keyano College Huskies, the number one seed in the North.

RDC got off to a good start with a quick 25-19 victory in the first set and followed that up by knocking down five straight points to win the second set 25-23. The third set, Schulha said, was the only shaky one they had all weekend and the Huskies took advantage of a couple of unforced errors to win 25-17.

But Red Deer would not be denied. They quickly found the form that had earned them a 23-1 regular season record and overpowered Keyano 25-12 to secure the 3-1 victory and the provincial championship.

With the win, RDC heads into their third straight CCAA championship with a full head of steam and a serious chance to come home with a national title.

SPORTS BRIEFS It’s been a busy couple of weeks around the hockey world in Red Deer with playoffs in full swing. Here’s a quick rundown of how Red Deer’s teams are faring:

BENTLEY GENERALS The Bentley Generals’ first-round playoff series against the Innisfail Eagles has been a hard fought one to say the least. The Gens went into the best of seven series as the clear favourites, having finished first overall in the Chinook Hockey League while their opponents finished in fourth.

But anything can happen in Senior Men’s AAA hockey, and after losing game five 3-2 in overtime in Lacombe, the Generals find themselves on the brink of elimination, down 3-2 in the best of seven series. “We’re up against it, and we’re going to find out what we’re made of plain and simple,� said Generals Head Coach Ryan Tobler after Sunday’s game.

Game six goes next Saturday in Innisfail at 7:30 p.m., while game seven will be on Sunday in Lacombe at 7:15 p.m. if necessary.

The winner of the series will move on to play the Stony Plain Eagles in the league final to determine Alberta’s representative at the 2016 Allan Cup.

RED DEER VIPERS After a tough and hard-fought series the Red Deer Vipers were eliminated from the Heritage Junior Hockey League playoffs, Friday night, when they fell to the Airdrie Thunder in game seven of their HJHL North Conference semi-final matchup.

After the Vipers made short work of the Ponoka Stampeders in the elimination round, the series against Airdrie was one of the closest in recent memory. Both teams had a chance to win every game, including the final game of the series, which was tied 4-4 early in the third period before Airdrie’s Kody Mcmanus scored the series-clinching goal on the power play just four minutes into the final frame and give Airdrie the 4-3 series win in game seven.

The season isn’t quite over yet for the Vipers, as they will be hosting the Alberta Jr. B Provincial tournament at the Red Deer Arena March 31st- April 1st.

What to do after your credit has gone bad It is matter of fact that life can be much unexpected. Perhaps you have been hit hard by this economic downturn or maybe an illness or even just plain old mismanagement has left you with a series of late payments on your credit. No use crying over spilled milk so to speak.

This week we are going to look at what to do to repair your credit after such an event.

There are three main scenarios we most often see in conjunction with damaged credit.

1. Regular late payments. All types of credit providers report to the credit agencies about you and your repayment history. Cell phones, credit cards, student loans, vehicle or personal loans, lines of credit and of course your mortgage. You are assigned a credit rating based on if your payments are made on time, if you are at or near limit on your credit cards and a variety of other things.

Often the descent into bruised credit starts by missing a payment here and there. Of course the more late payments you have, the more leery a new lender will be to extend you additional credit. If you had a rough patch like this then the best thing to do is catch up ASAP and do not let it happen again.

PIKKERT Lenders will want to see that you have recovered financially and you now mange yourself well.

The magic number is two. They want to see two years of perfect repayment on at least two credit facilities. After the damage was done it is imperative that you not have another late payment on anything including your cell phone.

It is also a good idea to save some money so they can see you have a fallback position if you lose your job.

Finally, keep your credit cards at no higher than 75% of the available credit. It can be a sign of financial distress if you are maxed out.

2. Orderly payment of debts – this program is entered into voluntarily by people who need further help.

These agencies will meet with you to assess your situation and determine a repayment plan with your creditors. They

make calls on your behalf and negotiate for you which will stop the collection calls you may have been receiving.

Interest rates are negotiated down and you are set up on a repayment plan to pay your creditors every cent you owe.

Your credit bureau will reflect that you have opted for the OPD which means you have to do some work to be considered for lending later on.

Again, the magic number for re-establishing is two. You need to have two credit facilities reporting pristinely for two years once the OPD reports as complete.

At that point many lenders will consider you for mainstream lending. You may have to start with a secured credit card or two or a vehicle with a higher interest rate to get back on track.

3. Bankruptcy – in this scenario you have gone through the formal bankruptcy process which involve a trustee and the court system.

Your debt obligations were negotiated down to a portion of what they were and you have paid out that amount as per your agreement. Two years after you show as formally discharged with two years of established credit on two credit facilities you will once again be eligible for main-

stream lending.

Without those criteria you may find yourself paying a higher rate for a mortgage or other loan.

A few extras I would like to point out are these. If you have ANY late payments after the OPD or bankruptcy you will most likely be turned down for a mortgage at best rates.

The lenders will allow that life threw you sideways but it is up to you to show them it will not happen again. If there was a foreclosure in your past, you are not likely to get any financing for a mortgage unless you are willing to pay some very high interest.

Finally, there are companies out there who advertise that they can fix your credit for a fee.

Be very cautious in your dealings with them. They can be very expensive and the credit reporting agencies are on record reporting there is NO quick fix for credit issues. Do your due diligence before entering into an agreement with anyone telling you they can fix your credit.

Association – Central Alberta since 1979, the 2016 Red Deer Home Show will again provide Central Albertans with a venue for new and improved products and services featuring award-winning builders, renovators, products, ideas and décor.

“This year we have over 300 exhibitors in the show,” said Brandon Bouchard, vice president of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association Central Alberta and chair of the Home Show committee. “We are also expecting anywhere from 10,000 to 15,000 attendees.

Last year’s numbers were about 13,000 so we are hoping to beat that this year.”

Hours are from noon to 8 p.m. on March 4th; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on March 5th and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on March 6th.

Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for students/ seniors and those under 12 get in for free with an adult.

As Bouchard pointed

out, there are a number of areas that visitors can explore, and the event is really family-friendly with activities for the kids as well.

“We have everything from landscapers to builders and developers - everything to do with home building and home renovations. There’s always a lot for folks to see.

“This is the perfect time of year for folks to start thinking about things they want to do both to the outside and inside of their homes,” he said.

There are also a number of special guests each year - this year, Kate Campbell will be presenting.

According to the Home Show web site, she has been working in television and the renovation industry for over seven years and can be seen on HGTV’s Holmes on Homes, Holmes in New Orleans, Handyman Superstar Challenge and Holmes Inspection.
