Outdoor enthusiast Shannen Beckinsale wants to establish a club in Lake Country to help get kids involved in outdoor sports.

Lake Country outdoor enthusiast Shannen Beckinsale says the timing is perfect to lay the groundwork for a made in Lake Country multi-sport club that can host events within Lake Country. Beckinsale, 26, will host two separate events in Lake Country this year: A five-day road cycling training camp at the end of April and a half marathon in June. Currently there are no large, organized races that take place in Lake Country, but with the beautiful setting, Pelmewash Parkway as well as the Okanagan rail trail corridor coming online in the future, it’s likely just a matter of time before someone moves in and wants to host a large event. Beckinsale says she wants it to come from within the community as a way to get more kids involved, promote Lake Country and raise funds for the rail trail and Lake Country Boys and Girls Club. “With the amount of young families and the growth in Lake Country I want to get kids involved and introduce them to outdoor sports,” said Beckinsale, a personal trainer and environmental consultant who moved to Lake Country three years ago. “With the rail trail coming there is going to be so much more growth. I want to open up the opportunities now, before a big name company comes in that isn’t local. I think it’s cooler and would mean so much more to the community to have it more grassroots.” Beckinsale has received approval to host both of her events this year and says Lake Country is an ideal spot for both a cycling event, the half-marathon as well as other events in the future. The road cycling training camp will be for riders of all levels with group rides taking place each day from April 25 to 29. She’s promoting it across the country to try and attract cyclists who are prepar-

ing for the competitive racing season but also wants new riders to be able to be introduced to the sport. “The idea behind the training camp is to promote Lake Country, specifically the kind of great cycling we have here with the roads and the hills and the scenery,” she said. “There are lots of different aspects to road cycling that make Lake Country attractive: We have moderate to steep hills and some quieter roadways that are safer for riding. I’m going to accommodate all levels of riders, from beginners to advanced.” As far as the half-marathon goes, Beckinsale will incorporate Wood Lake into the route for what’s going to be known as Conquer the Lake. Runners will compete in the 21 km circuit half-marathon going around Wood Lake on Oyama Road and Pelmewash Parkway. There will also be shorter loops of six and 12 km for the event which will take place Sunday June 12. Beckinsale says while she is pushing the events in this inaugural year, she has put together a committee of like-minded folks who held their first meeting on Sunday night with the thought that eventually a club will host both the road cycling training camp and the marathon as well as other events throughout the year. “I’m hoping to get a multi-sport club started so these events will be taken over by the club and I will be a part of it,” she said. “The club would accommodate swimmers, runners and cyclists. I want to cater to elementary schools and get kids involved in biking skills camps and running events. I think it will go really nicely here in Lake Country. We have such a long summer, we have the lakes and the roads and the wineries. I think it’s just a good spot.” For more information on the events: lakecountrycycleweek.ca and transformfitnessbc.ca. @KP_media1

Premier suggests funding to protect B.C. lakes may be coming KATHY MICHAELS Premier Christy Clark hinted that the province may be stepping up its efforts to keep invasive mussels from B.C. lakes this summer. The issue was brought up during a recent Kelowna Chamber of Commerce meeting, when Clark was asked what her government intended to do to protect area waterways from Zebra and Quagga Mussels. “Last year we had roving patrols and we learned a lot...I ask that you stay tuned on this one. We should be ready for the new boating season when it comes,” Clark said to the crowd. The Okanagan Water Basin Board has been asking that roving inspection patrols turn into permanent inspection check points and they may be getting their wish. The new podium was designed and built by Nick Garding and Lea Kunz. It features a power mechanism to raise or lower the enlarged table top housing a microphone, keyboard and mouse with enough space for speaking notes —all designed on an angle that works well for someone from a seated position. “We heard the con-

cerns brought forward by the Access & Age-friendly Committee and gave the project to staff to research where to get the appropriate parts and design something that would work well for our community,” said Greg Buchholz, Lake Country infrastructure services director. “It’s not the usual task that someone in arena ice maintenance would take on; but we’ve got a very passionate team in Lake Country that is resourceful and solution-oriented. “So when two of our parks and facilities operators came up with an idea, it took them very little time to make it happen.” “The new presentation podium is a community example of something truly inspiring,” added Molloy. “This innovative, practical and functional solution to a tricky challenge instills awe and inspires community pride.”

▼ NEW EVENT

Inaugural children’s festival draws ‘phenomenal’ response

The Lake Country Indoor Children’s Festival held last Saturday at the community complex in the George Elliot Secondary School offered a myriad of fun activities for youngsters to take part in.Some 1,500 people attended the multi-vendor event.

KEVIN PARNELL

Heading into the inaugural Lake Country Indoor Children’s Festival presented by TD, organizer Ryan Donn was hopeful it would be well-received in the community. So when the doors opened on Saturday morning at the Lake Country Community Complex at George Elliot school and people started to pour into the festival, it wasn’t long before he knew the event was one he would continue as an annual one in Lake Country. More than 1,500 people attended the indoor festival on Saturday, a four hour, multi vendor event that saw almost every table run out of supplies and had organizers, sponsors and families all looking forward to next year. “It went perfectly, it couldn’t have gone any better,” said Donn, the cultural development coordinator at the District of Lake Country. “The community came out in droves. It was phenomenal.” The event featured 40 activity centres set up throughout the community complex as the festival utilized the atrium at George Elliot along with the theatre, the community gym and an outdoor area where firefighters allowed kids the ability to work a fire hose and dress in firefighting gear. “The space has only really been utilized that way for ArtWalk,” said Donn of the unique setting of the community complex, a shared use facility inside George Elliot. “It all worked so well together. People could have two to five minute experiences at each of the booths and people love that these days, the ability to sample. “I’ll be trying to think how we can take this model that ArtWalk has used successfully all these years and use it to connect different segments of the community.” Among the booths that attracted a lot of attention and really spoke to an accepting community was one set-up by the Intercultural Society of the Central Okanagan, which had a “try a turban” booth set up where people could try on the traditional religious headwear worn by the Sikh community. Donn said the booth was quiet at the start of the event but aside from the first few moments, it had a large line with people interested in trying on a turban. “It just speaks to an accepting community,” he said. “When we talk about cultural development that was it. It just shows a level of multi cultural respect and that’s what I heard from people. “That was probably the most unique component of the festival. People were really touched and enjoyed seeing that.” Donn said the event will definitely become an annual fixture in Lake Country and said he already had title sponsor TD commit to being involved next year. He said adding the indoor children’s festival early in the year to Lake Country made sense for the community and also for others around the Central Okanagan who also came to Lake Country to check it out. “I think there was a need in the community for an indoors family event in the off season,” he said. “There has been a growing need for a new children’s festival in the Central Okanagan and the indoor component was huge for us.” Donn said he is working on another new event for Lake Country, an agricultural fall fair that will likely debut in the fall of 2017. @KP_media1

Government again bowing to the power of the judges One of the enduring legacies of Pierre Trudeau’s time as prime minister is the legal supremacy of the individual, as articulated in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. We are seeing this played out with greater force than ever today, by an activist high court that swatted aside Stephen Harper’s attempts to restrain it, and now orders a meek, politically correct Justin Trudeau government to do its bidding. The Federal Court decreed last week that people have the right to grow their own “medical” marijuana. This ruling is unlikely to be appealed, given that Trudeau the Younger is committed to legalizing marijuana for everyone. There are conditions that show measurable relief from marijuana products, such as glaucoma or the nausea and loss of appetite associated with cancer treatments. But much of the so-called medical marijuana industry is based on unsubstantiated claims about an inconsistent herbal remedy that hasn’t been studied much because it’s been illegal. The Federal Court case involves four people from B.C., which boasts more than half of the contested medical marijuana growing licences issued across

B.C. Health Minister Terry Lake expressed the hope that Canada ends up with a consistent policy on doctor-assisted suicide, rather than a provincial patchwork. The closest Lake came to politically incorrect criticism was to caution that “deep discussion” is needed around the court’s notion of a “competent minor,” someone not yet entrusted with the vote or access to a liquor store. Three dissenting Conservative MPs went so far as to say the recommendations don’t adequately protect seniors who might be coerced into checking out and passing on their estates. How old-fashioned. Mixed results for prime minister’s report card on first 100 days in office To the editor: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, when asked how he performed in his first 100 days in office, said: “You tell me.” The left-leaning press gave him a soft pass, as there have been starts on several election promises made. But a quick review clearly shows a lot of shortfalls in planning for and executing the Liberal “election plan.” So what went right: • Gender equality in cabinet. • National inquiry on missing and murdered aboriginal women, con-

sultation started but no inquiry date set. • Meetings with the premiers, Aboriginal chiefs and major city mayors, starting a dialogue on various needs. • Met with the leaders of many countries and the NATO and UN chairmen while attending conferences. • Attended the Climate Change Conference with 383 Liberal supporters as “delegates”—all at the government expense when probably 20 bureaucrats were needed to present Canada’s position.

• Lots of photo ops for Justin with leaders. • F18 are returning to Canada and a new mission in Iraq/Syria defined. Consider what went amiss: • The Liberal analysis grossly underestimated the 2016 economic situation pre-election. • Promises of $4.2 billion spending confirmed; many projects not set out during the election, and a lot going off-shore. • The economy slipped from pre election recovery back toward recession. • Operating deficits of

$10 billion or more are now forecast along with Infrastructure of $10 billion for a total of $20 billion deficit this year and worse predicted for the next three years. • Now there is no possibility of a balanced budget in four years. • The planning for Syrian refugees missed the issues of “security clearances” and “properly authenticated identity documents.” • The planning for resettling Syrian refugees missed the need for affordable housing in all major cities—resulting in long expensive stays in

hotels and huge living allowance costs for meals in restaurants. The minister claims all refugees were in affordable housing in two weeks; in fact, about half are still in hotels since arrival, some for up to two months. • Planning for 25,000 government sponsored refugees by Christmas. Fact: Only 8,000 arrived and most of those were given clearance screening prior to the election and were privately sponsored by churches, communities and support groups. • Converting and updating military bases homes to long term refu-

Even if I can neither define nor measure that emanation, I’m sure it influences me. Listening is a skill. It needs to be practised. In a workshop on congregational renewal, Bruce Sanguin suggested that the first thing a congregation needs to do is to learn to listen to each other. Not to offer answers. Or judgement. But to listen. Sanguin suggested

that, instead of seizing a silence to insert my own words of wisdom, I should summarize what I heard the other saying. Partly to be sure I heard them right. Partly to reassure them I really had been listening. Because, honestly, sometimes I haven’t been. I have merely waited for a break in the flow of words so that I can offer my own view. Or rebuttal. Or, I regret, a vaguely related joke. Listening is not egocentric. I wonder what would happen if we really learned to listen to other humans. And beyond hu-

mans. If we unplugged our earphones, if we turned off our cell phones, could we hear the inaudible voices of trees, flowers, and grasses? Could we hear the earth through the soles of our feet? Could we hear the atmosphere with our noses? Perhaps, if we emptied our minds of our incessant busy-ness, we might

even be able to listen to that still small voice beyond nature, within nature, that some of us call God? Instead of trying to tell God what we think God needs to know, could we hear something we didn’t know was there? Jim Taylor lives in Lake Country

▼ PUBLIC ALERT

Dog attack in Beasley Park recounted To the editor: I am writing this letter to alert the community that on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 31, I was attacked by a dog while enjoying a nature walk in Beasley Park. I was walking west on the bark mulch trail when I saw a couple with a large dog ahead of me. The dog ran past me, then attacked from behind, biting me on the inside of my right knee. I informed the dog owner, who said her dog couldn’t possibly have bitten me, until I pulled up my pant leg and showed her the bleeding wound. She was appalled and very contrite. She volunteered her information, and I informed the dog control office, and an agent followed up and the appropriate disciplinary action was taken. I was traumatized by this event,

both physically and emotionally. It is evident dogs do not belong in public parks. Reiswig Park has “No Dogs” signs posted. Beasley Park has a sign which allows dogs on leash October to April. Last year my friend, who lives near the park, and I sent emails to, as well as spoke with, the regional district and Lake Country council asking them to remove the existing dog sign on the gate off Clement Road, and to put a more visible “No Dogs” sign on the fence on Clement Road. Unfortunately, they simply moved the existing sign allowing dogs on leash in the winter to the fence. We also attended several meetings which asked for public input regarding parks, and we again asked for no dogs in public parks.

In our experience, as regular walkers through these parks, dogs run loose all year. It is time to take a stand, and remove dogs from the parks. It is possible next time a child or some other defenseless person will be maimed, or worse. Dog owners may use the dog park on Woodsdale Road opposite Turtle Bay Court. I live in Kelowna, and I experience the same problem with dogs running loose, or being taken to beaches that are off limits to dogs. There are many dog parks available, and even dog beaches. We require better regulations and policing of this escalating problem and now, as a victim of this dog control issue, I want to see some preventative action. Anita Lawry, Kelowna

Shame, shame on provincial government To the editor: Since 2007, the last time government raised the income assistance rate to $906.42 for persons with disabilities (PWD), the cost of living has increased by 26 per cent. Last week, the government announced an increase to the rate by $77, about 8.5 per cent increase. Then, to add insult to injury the government

plans to take away the $45 a year transit pass for those on income assistance. The government is asking PWD to use $52 of the $77 increase to purchase a monthly transit pass, which amounts to $604 a year. On top of that, many PWD who are fortunate enough to live in subsidized or supportive housing will have their rent increased by $20.

Outside of $5, there goes the so-called increase. Government attempts to justify themselves by using terms like “equity.” I respectfully submit that they know nothing about equity or the reality of those living with a disability. If it truly is about equity, then attempt to take the $45 a year pass away from seniors living on low and fixed incomes of up to $1,400 a

month and ask them to pay $604 a year for their transit—then just maybe government will begin to understand. The transit pass encourages and promotes independence and community participation. The impact and hardships of raising its cost will be far reaching. Shame on Premier Christy Clark for allowing this to happen. Joyce Mainland, Kelowna

Ask The Dentist! by Dr. Lina Jung, DDS

New or Just a New Advertising Gimmick?

Q:

My wife and I have two different dentists. Mine is an older guy whom I have been seeing for 3 decades. His office isn't fancy, but it gets the job done. He is closing his doors next year, and he said it is unlikely anyone would buy it because his equipment is pretty basic. My wife sees a younger guy with supposedly the latest and the greatest in his clinic. It seems her bills are always higher than mine, but I'm not expert enough to know the difference. I'm betting there is some technology that is more sizzle than steak. Has dentistry really changed that much?

A: The answer is both 'yes' and 'no'. Not trying to speak in tongues here, but yes – the technological advances are amazing even year over year. The diagnostic tools available now allow dentists (both GP's and specialists) to provide much more accurate treatment plans. They can 'see' bone in the clinic now with CT Scans (3 dimensional), and also measure the depth for advanced treatment like dental implants. The top rated supplies, equipment, and labs cost more, but we use them to deliver the best overall product. The cavity detection science today such as lasers and digitally enhanced radiography with CT Scans allows a dentist to ensure that all tooth decay has been removed from a specific area after treatment.

Sterilization methods now provide higher levels of protection and prevent cross contamination. Dental implants can replace teeth individually or when used as anchors for a fixed bridge they can provide a solid platform that allows the patient the ability to eat normally without worrying about dental work dropping into their soup. Technology with hand pieces has improved – they are quieter now and offer a more smooth delivery which can alleviate some stress on the tooth structure. Some offices provide massage chairs, refreshment stations etc. for your creature comfort. So far, it sounds like the 'newer' science and technology is the answer. What it can offer is more speed, or convenience. The actual science behind our profession is unchanged. Colleagues volunteering in refugee camps use portable dental chairs, and an entire dental operatory out of a duffle bag. They still perform many up to date procedures, primarily for pain relief as opposed to cosmetic enhancements. They get people out of pain and help save lives. Your retiring doctor may very well have served you well. His equipment might be more 'tried and proven' but he is capable of providing you with great dental care. His gear wouldn't net him much on the open market, but it may get donated to the third world where it can continue to provide good dental care for years to come!

Q What is an Auris hearing loop? A

An Auris hearing loop transmits an audio signal (eg. a microphone, mp3 or TV etc) directly to the recipients own hearing aid. It does so discreetly, conveniently and at a much lower cost than other hearing assist technologies. The recipients receive the transmitted signal via a Telecoil (Or T-Coil) already found in most hearing aids which simply needs to be switched on or off. The loops system eliminates distracting background noise and/or echo enabling the users to engage directly with the sound source.

Dry eye syndrome is a lack of sufficient lubrication in the eyes, resulting in a burning, scratchy feeling. Causes include aging, hormone fluctuations, as a side effect of many medications, and many systemic health conditions. Air conditioning, heating systems, and dry climates like the Okanagan can make it worse. Insufficient blinking, typical among computer users, is a common cause. Contact lens users are another group to complain of dry eyes. Treatment usually starts with the regular use of artificial tears or gels that alleviate the dry, scratchy feeling. Wearing sunglasses protects the eyes from sun, dust and wind; humidifiers add moisture to the air. Keeping yourself hydrated, and adding omega-3 fatty acids into your diet can also be beneficial. Your optometrist can provide a tailored treatment plan for your specific complaints.

I have become a Chronic Dieter. Why can’t I maintain weight loss by dieting?

According to ALL the best scientific research studies on weight loss, over 99% of people who lose weight by dieting gain it all back and more within a year. Yet so many people chronically diet for most of their lives unable to reach their goals. Here are a few key reasons why: • Believing fat in food means fat on your body • Following a low calorie diet • Skipping meals, eating a tiny breakfast, • Thinking food and appetite are your enemy • Not allowing yourself to receive pleasure from food small lunch and big dinner Each of these put your body into survival mode and creates a physiologic stress response. Do you think it is important for us to hire a local Realtor? When you are ready to hire a realtor, insuring that they have proven marketing strategies and performance success in your community are two major things to be looking for.

A professional that knows the local market is extremely important because there are numerous factors in the community that will influence a buyer’s purchase decision. These same factors will also be important for seller pricing because your home sale will depend on your realtor’s ability to capture and market all of these features; we are not only selling the home we are also selling our community. Being able to share information about recreational options, local amenities, and information about schools and businesses is important so that potential buyers feel at ease in knowing they are buying the right home in the right community. When you are ready to buy or sell with a proven, and multiple award-winning, professional realtor... remember to call me first!

Boat traffic lake study called long overdue JENNIFER SMITH A proposed study of boat traffic on Kalamalka and Wood lakes could stir up some waves. The Okanagan Collaborative Conservation Program is seeking grants towards a study of boat capacity on the Coldstream and Lake Country lakes. “The idea of a boat study has been floating around for several years,” said Michael Reiley, Coldstream’s director of development services. “How much boat traffic could be on the lake without impacting water quality?” The need for a study, especially considering the high demand for boating and requests for more marinas, was suggested by staff from Coldstream, Lake Country, Regional District of North Okanagan and Regional District of Central Okanagan. “What could come out of it could be the basis for limiting development on the lake,” said Reiley. “This could be the basis for refusing applications. “The biggest impact would be a way to limit boat usage on Kalamalka Lake.” While the numbers can provide quantitative rationale to the approving body for a limit of boats on the lakes, Reiley admits it could be hard to control. Both the RDCO and RDNO have committed $5,000 each towards the project. Coldstream is sending its support to the OCCP in applying for a water conservation and quality improvement grant from the Okanagan Basin Water Board. If the grant is successful, Coldstream will also pitch in $1,500 towards the cost of the study.

Changing the Culture of Substance Use is a project is currently being implemented at 11 B.C. public post-secondary institutions. Project researchers are working with these institutions to create a wider range of resources and strategies, which will engage key groups such as student leaders, students in residence

and those in their first year. UBC Okanagan will use its share of the funding to engage students and campus stakeholders to better understand the mental health and substance use needs on campus and promote a healthy campus environment. This investment aligns with the provincial government’s 10year mental-health and sub-

Live blood analysis service beneficial to people and animals KEVIN PARNELL For most of her life, Lake Country businesswoman Lorraine Andres has been working with horses and with people, helping animals overcome stress and helping people better understand their animals. Now the mother of four grown children is taking her career in a new direction, something that ultimately will still help animals and people and has the ability to directly impact the health of not only people, but of animals as well. Andres is the owner of the Tranquille Rehabilitition Centre in Lake Country. She’s a certified coach that works with horses and with their owners to overcome difficulties. But over the past year she been training in a relatively new field in Canada: Live blood analysis. And as of March, Andres will begin offering a unique and proactive approach to health for people and for animals with her new company Tranquille Tech-

nologies Inc. “Live blood analysis is a great and natural way to show people exactly what is going inside of them, to show where the imbalances in their health are,” said Andres, who is being trained as a certified natural microscopy practitioner. “It just takes one drop of blood from the end of their finger and it goes on a microscopic slide and it will show where the imbalances are in people’s lives. “It’s an insight into your future. By being proactive you can avert serious health conditions.” Live blood analysis looks at live red blood cells along with a person’s immune system (white blood cells), the platelets that help your blood to clot (thrombocytes) and the plasma that they are suspended in. Many blood anomalies can be found using the system that remain unseen using traditional techniques. Andres is being trained through Live Blood London. She says

▼ DISTRICT SCIENCE FAIR

UBCO, teachers organize event Have you ever wondered about the secret lives of bacteria, how much DNA can fit into a cell, how gears work or what causes a tornado? These and many other questions will be answered at the Central Okanagan School District science fair which began Tuesday and is continuing today (Wednesday), hosted in partnership with UBC Okanagan. A highlight of the year for inquisitive science students, the fair is an opportunity to impress the judges and possibly win a spot in the regional fair at KLO Middle School. From there, the top six

students in British Columbia will travel to the national fair in Montreal, Quebec to compete for $400,000 in prizes and scholarships. Central Okanagan teachers Tobias Blaskovits, Wynter Oakes, Karla Lockwood, Pamela Horton, Agnes Gagliano, John Prescott, Amy Gunn, Larissa Addison, and Barbara Hofmann have worked alongside UBCO staff to organize the yearly district science fair. This year there will be over 150 projects on display and over 200 students in attendance. The event takes place at UBC Okanagan in the Engineering, Management

and Education Building and will be located in the EME Building and the Fipke Building today from 9 a.m. to noon. Student learning will be showcased in two different categories: A non-competitive (kindergarten to Grade 12) celebration and sharing of learning, and a competitive (Grade 6-12) category with a chance to move on to the Regional Science Fair. “Science Fair is such an amazing opportunity for students to use the process of inquiry to investigate the world around them, and to demonstrate to the community, their skills as 21st century learners,”

She says she plans to offer the service for animals as well and relates a story of a young maltese dog that lacked energy and had gone through several tests at the vet with no results. During blood analysis, Andres’ testing showed the dog was low in live enzymes (probiotics) and they were able to give a supplement to the dog, who showed marked improvement the very next day.

Students who have participated in the past, have not only been given the opportunity to travel, meet other young scientists and earn monetary benefits from scholarships and awards, but they have also found a passion for science and an understanding of what it means to be learners, thinkers, innovators, contributors and collaborators.” Participants in this year’s fair will be treated to a wonderful university experience with science demonstrations, presentations, and hands-on activities to be provided by university students and faculty at UBCO on the second day of the fair. “UBC Okanagan is delighted to welcome the Central Okanagan School District and the District Science Fair back to campus,” said Deborah Buszard, UBC deputy vice-chancellor and principal of the Okanagan campus. “It is critically important for young students today to have a strong grasp of the fundamentals of science.

Nominations sought for Okanagan Arts Awards Nominations for the ninth annual Okanagan Arts Awards has been extended after an overflow of response to the annual call for nominations. Organizers of the awards say there has been a hugea mount of interest in, and response to, the nominations. This year, the date of the awards has been moved to May 28.The event will take place at the Habitat in downtown Kelowna. In order to support the level of interest and the new date of the event, the nominations dedline has been extended to March 6 at 9pm. “We’re really excited about holding this year’s Okanagan Arts Awards at the Habitat,” said Okanagan Arts Awards are run by the Arts Council (ARSTCO) board member Gillianne Richards, who has hosted the awards with CBC Radio morning show host Chris Walker for the last three years. “It’s a great networking event for artists, and anyone from the public can also come out to feel inspired and discover the huge creative skill set the Okanagan has

to offer. “This year we’re mixing it up and trying new things, we want to give a fresh feel to the event and choosing the Habitat as the location is part of that decision. “We want patrons to be able to get dressed up for a beautiful gala and also have fun mingling at a hip club while enjoying tasty samples from the food trucks we’ll have set up out back. It’s about bringing more culture to the Leon (Avenue) area (of downtown Kelowna) and putting on a great event in the heart of town.” The Okanagan Arts Awards annually bring together hundreds of the top creative talent in the Okanagan to celebrate a night of artistic excellence. Organizers say the the nomination process is simple—just submit the nominee’s name, e-mail, address and a minimum of one web link or URLshowcasing the nominee’s work. You can submit up to three links in total. The option helps the judges see the nominees–artists, dancers, musicians and actors—in action via online videos.

The finalists will have their names and work promoted before the show. There are 12 categories this year’s awards. Seven awards are for artistic excellence in seven disciplines—visual arts, dance, music, theatre, applied art and time-based media. There are also five new award categories—emerging artist, innovation in the arts, art and business, business supporter of the year and the Community Impact Award. The Okanagan Arts Awards were created by ARTSCO to celebrate the highest levels in all disciplines of artistic and creative achievement. By publicly acknowledging the work of individuals and organizations, the Arts Council of the Central Okanagan places the efforts and contributions of local artists front and centre as an integral part of our vibrant community. To be eligible, nominations must be residents Peachland, West Kelowna, WFN lands, Kelowna or Lake Country.

TRANSPORTATION FOR TOMORROW 2016 PROJECTS Residents and businesses along Woodsdale Road and Bottom Wood Lake Road - have you noticed these District of Lake Country Engineering Technicians knocking on doors in your neighbourhood? Matthew and Aron have been visiting residents/businesses that will see some road improvement projects happening in their area this spring/summer. The Transportation for Tomorrow 20 year plan for ‘getting around Lake Country in safe and enjoyable ways’ sets the framework for street improvements. During 2016 a number of important projects will be delivered with a focus on providing safe routes to schools and connecting neighbourhoods. There will be some inevitable and unavoidable disruptions, so a Traffic Management Plan and a Communications Plan have been developed to keep you informed about the projects that will take place this Spring/Summer and be complete in September: 1) Woodsdale Road Street Improvements (April to July) (Seymour Rd to Bottom Wood Lake Rd)  New paved pedestrian pathways with traffic separation  New dedicated cycle lanes  Upgrade of road and drainage systems  Installation of new sewer force main and Seymour Rd lift station 2) Bottom Wood Lake Road Street Improvements (June to September) (Lodge Rd to Berry Rd)  Construction of new pedestrian pathways with street lighting  New dedicated cycle lanes  Road and drainage upgrades  New Taiji Ct intersection Watch this page and www.okanaganway.ca for more info about other 2016 Transportation for Tomorrow upgrade projects for Sherman Rd, Greenhow Rd, and Carr’s Landing Rd. The end results will be worth the minor disruptions.
