rior B.C. runners made their way up the last stretch along Island Highway to the finish line at Saunders Subaru in Colwood on Sunday.

The team has spent the last week relay running the length of Vancouver Island, starting in Port Hardy on Feb. 22 and ending in Colwood on Feb. 28, covering more than 600 kilometres.

The point of this gruelling task is to raise funds and awareness for Wounded Warriors Canada, a nonprofit charity that helps veterans injured in their service. The organization is currently focusing on mental health and the staggering impact of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as well as operational stress injuries (OSI).

British Columbia, Judith Guichon, was in attendance to welcome the team back.

“We owe you a great deal,” she said. “We can only imagine - we can’t really imagine - the toll taken by service.”

She compared the run to mental health, with each leg of relay being a small, achievable milestone.

The key to longevity is to “take it one day at a time,” said Bessie Ash. And if anyone is qualified to share that opinion it’s Ash, who celebrated her 100th birthday on Feb. 24.

Long life is a family trait for the Ash family, noted her son, Reg. Ash’s mother was 107 when she past away, one of her sisters lived to the centennial mark as well, and both brothers persevered well into their 90s.

“Her mom had 11 kids and they moved from Saskatchewan to B.C. in a

covered wagon,” Reg recalled at a celebration for his mother at the West Shore Lodge in Colwood last week. Reg said his mother made the decision to move there less than two years ago, after living independently in her condominium.

“She said it was time, and everyone felt it was the right decision.”

Although Ash said her 100th birthday was just like any other day, she was impressed by a letter of congratulations from Colwood Mayor Carol Hamilton.

Coun. Terry Trace, who presented the letter and a gift basket on behalf of Colwood Council, said she felt really honoured to take part in the celebration.

Ash also appreciated a huge birthday card the residents put together for her during an arts and crafts session.

Her son mentioned gardening, camping and fishing as a few of the pursuits

his mother thoroughly enjoyed during her long and fruitful life.

When asked what she thought was the biggest change she had experienced in her life, Ash said it was the fast-paced life that people live nowadays. “People used to be content to stay at home,” she said. “Now everyone’s out all the time in a hurry and they don’t even look at each other.”

a tough attitude and nobody messed with them — qualities that Doug could relate to, being a tough kid himself.

sell a little bit of marijuana. Seeing he was good at it, he soon graduated onto other drugs like crystal meth. Until then Doug had never worked a day in his life. Suddenly, the teen was making between $8,000 to $9,000 a month, blowing it on whatever fun he could find.

“Party buses, bottles for all of my friends, clothes, haircuts every couple of days. I would buy cars just to crash them,” said Doug, who did not want to use his real name to protect his identity.

Before he realized what was happening, Doug had been recruited into one of Victoria’s gangs. The money was more than he could ever dream of, but life for Doug

wasn’t exactly glamorous.

Aside from selling drugs, Doug was also known as an enforcer, using violence he didn’t even know he was capable of doing.

Fearing for his safety, Doug began to carry weapons, such as mace, wrenches and hammers whenever he was out in public. At one point, he had a gun and wondered when he would have to use it.

On one occasion, Doug was about to make a drug deal on a random country road when a vehicle rolled up with four guys armed with powerful guns. Doug and his friends were robbed of their drugs. The unexpected encounter left him shaken.

Outfall areas back in treatment plant mix Colwood mayor still wary of inequities for her city’s taxpayers Don Descoteau News Gazette staff

Anyone hoping to see Rock Bay win the day and be named the site for a main sewage treatment plant for Greater Victoria’s core municipalities would have been left wanting on Friday.

The Capital Regional District’s (CRD) core area liquid waste management committee did, however, approve a recommendation that may offer flexibility in siting and technology options. The decision included a revisiting as part of the project, McLoughlin, Macaulay and Clover points, three locations not previously being considered.

With no agreement around the table on the best option and the $1 billion-plus cost of each of the options offered to the public causing a major stumbling block, the committee agreed to split up the six parts of a staff recommendation rewritten by Victoria mayor and committee chair Lisa Helps and heavily amended during discussions at the nearly five-hour meeting.

The two parts relating to location, and the application of alternate technologies and solutions for chosen sites, were referred to CRD engineering staff. They will investigate the feasibility of the new options and provide committee members with more substantial details in time for discussion at the next com-

mittee meeting on March 9. The committee is also scheduled to bring a progress report to the full CRD board on that day.

“I think there’s a lot of work that’s been done today,” Colwood Mayor Carol Hamilton, who also co-chairs the Westside select committee, said afterward. “And I think that what we’ve done, by kind of broadening the options – even though I’m concerned that these are sites that have been (considered), then taken away or maybe not put up at all and not had the public consultation … we’ll figure out how to get through those kind of details.”

The first element CRD staff will be investigating leaves Rock Bay as the site for a central treatment plant and Colwood as the site of a smaller tertiary plant. But alternatives being costed out include a tertiary wastewater plant at either McLoughlin or Macaulay points, and a tertiary treatment plant at Clover Point, with provision for a tertiary plant on the westside.

Part 2 of the referral to staff deals with inviting submissions of project concepts that relate to everything from new technologies to integrated resource management, and provide enough detail to compare them to the base case, which in this situation is Rock Bay. Committee member and Langford Coun.

Denise Blackwell questioned staff how long it would take to get more technical and cost information on Clover Point and the West Shore. She was told it could be secured in time for the next meeting.

“As long as Rock Bay is included in these

options, my council has advised us and directed us that we can’t pay for Rock Bay, it’s far too expensive,” she told the meeting. “We need more information on bigger West Shore plants and more information about Clover and McLoughlin.”

Cost, especially the apportioning to municipalities, was equally a concern for Hamilton.

Her city’s taxpayers are roughly 70 per cent on septic and 30 per cent on sewer and many wouldn’t look kindly on being billed for something they weren’t receiving service for.

“At least it’s keeping options that are viable on the table (and) what we heard from the public; it’s about cost control on things,” she said of the overall picture. “So if there are cheaper solutions to be had by building closer to outfalls, it makes sense that we’re going to actually see that. I’m hoping that we get real kinds of costings and not these planning estimate costings out of engineering that are sometimes up as high as 90 per cent contingency.”

Also Friday the committee voted postponing until March 9 to give a progress update to senior levels of government and finalizing, with CRD board approval, the option to purchase the Rock Bay lands subject to it being selected as the primary site.

Washington legislator wants to see action

Last Friday’s meeting of the CRD’s core area wastewater treatment committee began with some subtle pressure from the region’s tourism sector.

The reminder that a Washington State legislator had proposed a bill that would see employees of state agencies not reimbursed for any travel to Victoria until the city has primary treatment in place drew a few snickers from the committee members.

Committee chair and Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps quickly pointed out that the subject, brought to the group’s attention in a strongly worded letter from board chair Bill Lewis of Tourism Victoria in advance of the meeting, was a serious matter and understates the importance of coming to some sort of agreement on the day.

The bill, introduced by Rep. Jeff Morris, whose constituency includes the San Juan Islands, saw the House of Representatives vote 50-47 to use the measure to restrict travel to Victoria.

The bill is now before the Washington Senate and if it passes there, would be in effect until Victoria has in place at least primary sewage treatment. editor@goldstreamgazette.com

The Greater Victoria Public Library (GVPL) is launching an outreach library van as part of new plans to better connect people with the services the GVPL offers. The new outreach van stopped by Royal Bay Secondary School on Feb. 26 to give students an opportunity to get familiar with the service it provides.

The van will deliver library services to 10 municipalities and reach thousands of people each year, said GVPL board chair Kevin Murdoch. “Our new Mobile site brings the library’s vast collection to anyone with internet access on any device,” Murdoch said. “It demonstrates we are responsive to changing needs, and underscores the creative ways we extend the reach of our library system.”

The van will contain a small collection of library materials for GVPL members, and allow people to sign up for library membership at the vehicle.

It will also increase visibility at community events and parades, as well as during outreach programs at seniors centres, for example, explained Jessica Woollard, communications officer for the GVPL. The new Outreach Library Van (OliVe) ) is part of the GVPL’s new strategic plan - based on public consultation, board direction and staff feedback - and the first of many new launches planned during the next five years.

Funding for OLiVe was provided by the Victoria Foundation and Friends of the GVPL. Maureen Sawa, CEO for the GVPL, said the positive input from more than 100 established partners is one of the GVPL’s greatest strengths, and an invaluable source for future plans. “We are a truly a community inspired library system,” she said.

The GVPL’s strategic plan was launched during Freedom to Read Week, Feb. 21 to 27, an annual event with an emphasis on encouraging intellectual freedom.

With more than $30,000 raised and donations still being tallied at the time of the Gazette’s print deadline that number was expected to continue to rise.

But as Allan Kobayashi pointed out, all the money and services in the world won’t fix these problems unless more work is done to break the taboo subject of talking about mental health and

feelings.

“I have PTSD,” said Kobayashi, a co-founder of Wounded Warrior Run B.C. and one of six runners on the team. “It wasn’t too long ago I wouldn’t admit to something like that.”

He said the first step is for people to realize they are having a hard time and begin talking about it.

“This is what’s important…

People willing to be vulnerable,” he said. “It really starts with that thing called acceptance.”

He pointed to the firefighters, other first responders and police officers in the room.

“PTSD is not defined by your title.” He acknowledge the need to address its impact on not just

As we grow older, the lenses in our eyes tend to grow stiffer and less flexible. As this happens, the lens loses some of its ability to focus on near objects. This condition is called presbyopia, and it occurs in all of us – becoming apparent around the age of 40 and progressing as the years go by.

Most of us notice this when we find ourselves holding books or newspapers further and further away – the “trombone” effect. Sooner of later this will go from being annoying to being unacceptable.

The good news is that presbyopia is correctable.

In fact, the optometrist today can supply you with more options to correct this problem than ever before.

Among the available options are: Reading glasses: If your distance vision is still good and you only have trouble close up, full or half frame glasses may be the answer.

Bifocals and trifocals: If you need glasses for both distance and close-up, the new generation of bifocal glasses can solve your problem. Modern bifocals are lightweight and attractive, unlike their predecessors.

Trifocals have a section for those intermediate distances, just beyond armslength.

Progressive lenses: A relatively new advance, these are designed to mimic the focusing action of the normal eye. They can provide the advantages of trifocals, but without the lines.

Task specific lenses: People in certain professions, occupations and hobbies that require focus at particular distances can benefit from a variety of specialty lenses designed to meet their requirements.

In addition , there are contact lenses which can help some people with presbyopia. If you are having trouble seeing close-up, talk to your optometrist.

Silently suffering With the Wounded Warrior B.C. Run finishing this weekend we are reminded of the sacrifices made by those that serve our country and our communities.

It’s those sacrifices that we often overlook.

And unfortunately it is also the sacrifices our local first responders make when serving our communities that we tend to overlook as well.

These men and women are the ones running from the warmth and safety of their homes at all hours of the night. They devote their time and their lives to be ready at a moment’s notice.

They plunge head-first into a dangerous situation, putting themselves at risk, to help someone else.

They are the ones that have to make that call on who to save - and they have to live with that decision for the rest of their lives.

And the things our first responders see in the course of a year, a month and a week could bring even the strongest to their knees.

For those of us that don’t serve, we can only imagine what they go through, how they manage to deal with that stress and emotion, while carrying on with their day and their family lives, trying not to let it affect them or those around them.

While laws are put in place to try and keep them safe when they are working on the side of the road, the injuries we cannot see are often overlooked.

Yes, it is important we keep these men and women safe while they are out serving the community, but it is equally important that we make sure those injuries you cannot see are also being addressed.

Talking about feelings, especially in those industries often stereotyped as macho, has this stigma around it that creates walls and keeps people from getting the help they need.

While post traumatic stress disorder or operational stress injuries have been taboo subjects in the past, in recent years many groups and organizations have empathized the need for more research to be done on these subjects.

These are injuries that are no longer just associated with veterans.

But our first responders - and military members are still not getting the help they need.

They take care of us each and everyday, so now it is our turn to make sure we are taking care of them.

No one should have to suffer on their own.

Vehicle improvements also needed With all the bureaucracy surrounding the addition of bike paths along Atkins Avenue attempting to connect the Galloping Goose trail to the E&N Rail Trail, I’m shocked at the lack of opinions for the vehicle traffic along this street.

There isn’t enough space for cars and cyclists.

I’ve witnessed harassment towards cyclists (for going too slow) who make their way along, even though the road from whichever end you start on it is (and always has been) 30 km/h.

money adding a digital speed sign for a road that is at all times 30 km/h.

Having lived on this stretch of road in the same house for nearly 25 years (as a child myself and now as an adult with my own children) I have been witness to the explosion of vehicle traffic using Atkins Avenue as a bypass or simply accessing the tremendous pockets of new construction invading our once rural area.

Unfortunately our winding, narrow road hasn’t had any upgrades since I moved here in the late 80s to accompany the masses and I should apologize that our speed limit hasn’t been raised to

match your hurry.

I apologize that we do not have sidewalks for myself and my children to walk to and from school and to ensure we are well out of your way as you speed past us on the blind corners and as we dodge around the finite amount of parked cars on the bits of boulevard that do exist.

Bring on the bike paths, bring on the construction, maybe it’ll save my voice (even temporarily) from yelling at all of you to slow down.

West Shore artists look to aid those in need Artists partner with the Didi Society to help women globally and locally Arnold Lim News Gazette staff

Two West Shore artists are featured in an important global initiative.

Local Greater Victoria artists, the Didi Society and the Belfry Theatre make up the who, the what, and the where of Create Local: Tackle Global, an exhibition of local artists and non-profits partnering to help women. The theme for the art is empowerment.

“The strength of the piece (is) because of the form and the glaze, it’s very strong,” said Judi Dyelle of her ceramic piece, Containment Vessel. “Some of my other glazes are very delicate and this is incredibly strong, (an) almost architectural type of surface, giving the strength and empowerment of the artist (to the art).”

Dyelle, a potter of more than five decades with select works in collections around the world, operates ‘Chosin Pottery out of Metchosin and alongside Wendy Skog, represents the two West Shore artists in the exhibition.

After getting a phone call to get involved, Dyelle said it only took her the time to learn about the Didi Society, their co-operatives and their campaigns, to decide she wanted to be a part of the show.

“We are so fortunate in Canada, I can

do anything I want, I have no restrictions,” she said.

“In those countries (like India and Guatemala), they are more a patriarchal society, these women try so much harder to be able to do things.”

The word ‘didi’ means older, respected sister in the Hindi language, and is a word chosen to represent the society’s relationships with global and local co-operatives and partners.

They help sell co-op products through local markets and businesses under a fair-trade model, also offering capacitybuilding opportunities.

Dyelle said she hopes a good turnout supports local artists, women overseas, and the Belfry Theatre where more than two dozen Greater Victoria artists, including University of Victoria instructor Sandra Meigs, Wendy Welch and Carole Sabiston join forces for the cause.

Paintings, sculpture, ceramics and jewelry are all priced at $1,000 or less with 75 per cent going to artists and the other 25 per cent to Didi Society projects.

“I hope there is a good turnout to support artists and the society,” Dyelle said. “(We) are empowering these women to be able to do things whether it is providing for their family or whole community.”

The exhibit and sale is two days, March 5 to 6, at the Belfry Theatre and admission is free. A reception is also being held on March 4 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. with a cost of $25. alim@goldstream gazette.com

You probably have never heard of Ron Dias, even if you follow Canadian amateur football closely. If you are a Canadian or American university or college coach, however, you’re probably very familiar with Dias and the work he does.

“I call myself the most known unknown football evaluator in Canada,” said Dias, who has been establishing a great rapport with university coaches in Canada during the past 29 years.

This year marks Dias’ first trip to Langford for a clinic with the Westshore Rebels coaches, and he was impressed with what he’s seen.

“Langford’s done a tremendous job in building first class infrastructure, and I’m hearing the support for the team is great,” he said.

Players vie for spots on four teams; the Young stars for Grades 6 and 7, the Future Stars for Grades 8 and 9, the Rising Stars for Grades 10 and 11, and the Current Stars for Grade 12.

The players are selected from camps, such as the one Dias attended last week at Westhills Stadium in Langford, where players workout under the watchful eyes of ABC Border Bowl scouts and coaches from the Rebels.

The players who make the best impression will play a game in Chilliwack in December for further evaluation. With those coming out on top, competing in Abbotsford on May 14 and 15, and again at UBC-Okanagan May 27 before the ABC Bowl game on May 28. Players from Alberta and B.C. go through the same process, and all teams are monitored closely to ensure there is equal practice time.

One of the key elements to why the ABC Border Bowl game is such a good evaluation tool,

Dias said, is the partnership he has forged with VBN Sports (Virtual Broadcast Network). “Their use of three camera angles, a play by play commentator and colour analyst gives the video a real professional feel. It’s a great scouting tool for coaches.”

Dias cites a quarterback from Delta who played in last year’s game as an example of how well the program works. “McGill University’s coach saw the video and called to get his contact info, even though the kid is only in Grade 9. It’s tremendous exposure for community and high school players.”

Although the teams play American-style four down football, the rules are the same as Canadian football. “The four downs ensures that the kids get more reps,” Diaz explained during a break at Westhills Stadium.

The qualities Dias looks for in players are attitude, enthusiasm and passion. “Are the kids working with coaches, are they hustling,” he said. “Does the kid look you in the eye? That’s very important to me in this environment.” reporter@goldstreamgazette.com

The Victoria Shamrocks have signed a number of core players from last year in the team’s quest to repeat as Mann Cup champions.

The Shamrocks signed Matt Yager, Chris Wardle, Ethan Garland, Cody

Hagedorn and Matt Roik last week, five players who played important roles in the team’s 2015 championship run.

That follows on the heels of the signing of Western Lacrosse League first-team allstars Corey Small and Jesse King, as well as defensive stalwart Tyler Burton for the 2016 season.

Shamrocks general manager Chris Welsh said he’s pleased that all five players will be available.

“They’re a solid mix of veterans and youth, all with championship experience and they represent a significant part of our core,” Welsh said in a release.

Yager is a sevenyear veteran who has logged 93 regular season games and 53 playoff games.

Wardle, drafted 11th overall in 2014, has scored 14 goals and 18 assists in 25 games.

This will mark the third season for

Garland, who scored 12 points in 28 regular season games in 2014 and 2015.

Hagedorn finished last season with six wins and two losses and a .795 save percentage in 10 games last year.

Roik played in seven games last year, posting a 4-0 record and .786 save percentage.

The Belmont senior boys basketball team had a strong showing at the Island championship this weekend in Nanaimo, finishing third and narrowly missing a spot in provincial play.

The local boys beat G.P. Vanier 84-70 in the tournament opener. Belmont then went on to face Cowichan in a close contest, ultimately losing 72-69 in what coach Kevin Brown called a “heart breaker.”

Rallying after the defeat, Belmont went on to face Claremont in another close contest but this time coming out on top, 75-73, at the final buzzer.

In their final game of the tournament, Belmont beat host team Dover Bay 68-66, giving them a third place finish.

Oak Bay beat out Cowichan for first and second finishes.

Since Belmont’s only loss of the tournament had come at the hands of Cowichan, they were not able to challenge for a chance at berth to the B.C. provincial championship March 9 to 12 at the Langley Events Centre.

Dontae Bull was awarded player of the game twice, as well as Jackson Leeder and Luke Baloran.

Bull was also named to the first all-star team and Leeder to the second.

Grizzlies come up short in a run for playoffs Weekend split costs Victoria a playoff berth The Victoria Grizzlies were unable to secure a playoff berth in the British Columbia Junior Hockey League after coming up with only one win in their weekend games.

The Grizzlies needed to win their final two games to move on to

post season play.

A 6-2 home ice loss on Friday to the Powell River Kings proved costly, despite bouncing back to beat the Chilliwack Chiefs 8-5 on Sunday.

In Friday’s game Kamer Austin led the way with two goals and an assist for Powell River, while Gavin Rauser, Jonny Evans, Kyle Betts and Nick Halagian added a goal each.

Tyler Welsh and Alex Peck scored for the Grizzlies, with Nick Guiney adding two assists.

On Sunday, Cole Pickup had a huge game against the Chiefs with four goals and an assist. Chuck Bennis, Jared Virtanen, Brayden Gelsinger and Peck rounded out the goal scoring for the Grizzlies.

At the end of regular season play, the Nanaimo Clippers led the Island Division with 38 wins, 18 losses, one overtime loss and one tie.

Powell River finished second with 71 points, while Cowichan Valley had 60 points for third place and the Alberni Valley Bull-

dogs finished fourth with 54 points.

The Grizzlies finished fifth, just missing a spot in playoff action, with 24 wins, 30 losses, four overtime losses and four ties.

The Penticton Vees from the Interior Division led the league with an impressive record of 50 wins, seven losses and one tie.

Powell River will move on to the first round of the Island Division playoffs in a best of seven series against the Cowichan Capitals, starting on March 4.

Marty the Marmot’s among the most prepared of mascots after a quick training session on splints this week at Royal Jubilee Hospital.

The Victoria Royals mascot was on hand for a tutorial and photo shoot to promote the second annual Hockey for Hospitals campaign.

When the local hockey team seeks to slay the Vancouver Giants on March 5, the goal is to raise $27,000 for three specialized electric stretchers for the emergency departments at Victoria General Hospital and Royal Jubilee Hospital.

In trauma and critical situations medications are given based on weight. Once Marty’s once-over was complete, he learned a little about splinting.

“The Victoria Royals are Royal Jubilee and Victoria General. Last year, they raised nearly $7 million for urgently needed medical equipment and special projects that help these two hospitals provide care to all 765,000 residents of Vancouver

The West Shore RCMP is on the lookout for deserving students. The detachment’s Community Policing Advisory Committee (CPAC) is offering two scholarships for graduating students to assist with furthering their education.

The first up for grabs is a $500 scholarship, which applies to students pursuing fields of study that include, but are not limited to, policing, nursing, social work, justice studies, firefighting and counselling.

West Shore RCMP Const. Cole Brewer said the CPAC’s decision to scholarships available will it trymake create new opportunities today for youth within the community to get a head start on post-secondary education.

The other is a $1,000 scholarship that will be awarded to a student in recognition of their ability to overcome adversity and can be applied for on behalf of a deserving student.
