Summerland is a friendly community nestled in the Okanagan Valley that offers beautiful beaches, scenic vineyards and orchards, and magnificent mountains.

Our charming town has many interesting shops and wonderful restaurants, wineries, and fruit stands for all to enjoy.

The hot summer months are spent relaxing on our sandy beaches, golfing at one of our fabulous golf courses, or tasting wine at one of our many wineries. Children love the water park and man’s best friends love the doggie beach.

Biking, hiking, fishing, camping and water activities are endless here.

During the winter months you may want to visit one of the nearby internationally recognized ski resorts. Ice fishing, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, skating, curling and hockey are just a few winter pastimes to partake in.

Summerland hosts some very popular events throughout the year including Action Festival in June for our sports enthusiasts, a bustling Rotary Sunday Market featuring agriculture products and a multitude of crafts, and the Festival of Lights which kicks off the holiday season at the end of November.

Summerland has a vibrant cultural life and is home to many gifted artists. Unique local arts and crafts are showcased in stores, markets, and our Art Gallery.

Local’s Pick I have had the privilege of living in Summerland for the past 21 years. The one word that comes to mind in order to best describe this beautiful town is “paradise”.

The activities available to both residents and tourists are endless, with multiple golf courses, lake access and amazing shops. Summerland Sweets is an agricultural tourism attraction that was founded by my greatgrandfather and has been operating in Summerland for the past 54 years. Its gift store has a variety of products to offer, such as: syrup, jam and wine made from local fruit and of course, ice cream! One of my favorite attractions in Summerland is the Kettle Valley Steam Railway, as it’s a very unique experience and also is a very

family-oriented activity. Another aspect that makes this area of the Okanagan so spectacular is that an individual can visit one of the many beaches to soak up the sun, and can then also tour some of the eighteen wineries that can be found on Summerland’s Bottleneck Drive.

he Kettle Valley Steam Railway operates on the only preserved section of the famous KVR and invites you to take a ride and experience the nostalgia that only train travel can bring. Local’s Pick The Summerland Art Gallery hosts six shows a year featuring traditional watercolour landscapes, abstract paintings, photographs, sculpture, fibre art and so much more. Various local artists have studios open to the public, and many Summerland wineries sell local art as well.

Downtown streets come alive with art when street banners created by residents young and old appear annually. They are available for purchase at the end of the season and are perfect for a deck, carport or other outside location.

Visitors can also enjoy beautiful murals found in various locations downtown. Two of my favourites are the ones on the packing house and the one on the I.O.O.F. hall depicting the Okanagan Fur Brigade Trail.

History buffs will want to visit the Summerland Museum and may pick up guides to heritage sites and buildings in the area.

As a music lover I also enjoy the Wednesdays on the Water concerts held at Peach Orchard Park in July and August.

Local’s Pick Kayaking connects me with the water – it actually makes me feel like I’m part of it. Okanagan Lake is my playground, with so many places to paddle and so much to see.

Depending on wind and waves, my kayak buddy and I set out from one of a dozen good launch spots between Okanagan Lake campsite and Sun-Oka. I like to begin our excursions by heading against the wind or breeze to better the chances of a leisurely return paddle.

One of my favourite kayak trips takes me across the lake to one of the quaint little beach spots near Naramata – fine places for picnics. I enjoy exploring the shoreline and keeping my eyes open for fish in the shallow water.

Local’s Pick The best thing about living in Summerland is our amazing backyard playground. Within minutes of downtown, we have access to a diverse range of hiking and mountain biking trails.

From our home, a three-hour loop takes us from Okanagan Lake to the top of Giant’s Head. Along the way, we cruise down country roads, hop on the Trans Canada Trail, and hit a few jumps on historic flume routes.

Before heading back, we often reward ourselves with a refreshing glass of Pinot Gris at our favourite winery.

Year round we’re out on foot, choosing an adventure that fits our mood: heart-pumping trail runs, energizing snowshoe treks, or relaxing afternoon hikes. We like the views and variety offered by nearby Conkle and

Local’s Pick We moved to Summerland from the Prairies 10 years ago. This is an amazing town and there’s so much to do.

Our family really likes to be out in the fresh air spending time together, so camping is perfect. We love to watch the sun setting behind the mountains as we relax with friends and family. And there’s nothing like roasting marshmallows around a campfire and looking up to see the stars at night. Then we crawl into our snug tent, zip ourselves in and listen to the sounds of nature all around us as we drift off to sleep. During the day we go fishing and swim in the lake. It’s also really fun to try

new things like hikes we haven’t been on before. We’re awesome at being tourists in our own town! And you know what’s best about camping? Connecting as a family and no electronics!
