IN BRIEF Commuters take note The City of Courtenay is advising motorists to expect lane closures until Friday, March 4 between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. along Lerwick Road in front of the construction site for the new hospital.

Lerwick Road will be reduced to two lanes of traffic (one lane in each direction). In addition, the sidewalk on the east side of Lerwick Road will closed during road construction hours.

Traffic control personnel will be on site to assist all commuters, including vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, and emergency vehicles.

The lane closures will be required while the contractor installs BC Hydro ducts across Lerwick Road.

A Cumberland resident watching out for the community and the environment is to thank for reporting the illegal dumping of waste on Bevan Road.

The resident reported two individuals pouring used gasoline along the side of the rural road to Cumberland Bylaw Enforcement. The resident took note of the vehicle licence plate and had taken a photo of the offence taking place. Thanks to the diligent actions of this resident, a Courtenay man was fined for illegal dumping by Village of Cumberland Bylaw Enforcement.

The BC Conservation Officer Service is also investigating the matter with further fines or charges possible.

In Cumberland, illegal dumping is subject to a $10,000 fine upon conviction. If you observe or suspect someone is dumping illegally, safely document as much information about the violator and their vehicle as possible and report it to Village of Cumberland Bylaw Enforcement at 250-336-2291 or to the RCMP at 250-338-1321.

SUV hits Kim Cattrall’s house Actress Kim Cattrall tweeted a series of photos last week, showing damage that a Grand Vitara SUV reportedly did to the front of her Fanny Bay home. The photos and her comments immediately went viral, although no official report has been offered to the media from RCMP as to who was driving the car, how the incident unfolded, or if charges have been laid. With Alison Azer present, Courtenay-Alberni NDP MP Gord Johns asked the Liberal government last week what actions they are taking to ensure the safe return of the Courtenay mother’s four children.

“Alison has reason to believe

her children are in Kurdistan in Northern Iraq. Today, Alison is here in Ottawa encouraging the government to help bring her children safely home,” he said Wednesday in the House of Commons.

Omar Alghabra, parliamentary secretary (Foreign Affairs) Consular Affairs, noted the government remains committed and deeply concerned about the well-being of the Azer children.

“We have been in constant and regular contact with Ms. Azer …

I want to ensure the House that our officials are working closely with government authorities here and abroad including law enforcement agencies,” he replied. “…I want to ensure her and this House that we are very committed to the return of her children safely at home.”

It has been six months since the Courtenay mother has seen her four children, who were allegedly abducted by their father last summer.

In August, Alison Azer received word her ex-husband - Dr. Saren Azer (also known as Salahaddin Mahummudi-Azer) - hadn’t returned to Canada from a court-approved trip to Europe with her children Sharvahn, 11, Rojevahn, 9, Dersim, 7 and Meitan, 3.

Comox Valley RCMP sought and obtained a Canada Wide Warrant of Arrest for Azer - who practised at St. Joseph’s General Hospital in Comox. INTERPOL also lists the children as

missing on its website.

Local meeting planned

A meeting is set for Thursday, March 3 for Alison Azer to address friends, family and the community as an update following her visit to Parliament.

Alison will report on her trip and talk about mobilizing political action and community awareness.

The meeting is set for Queneesh Elementary from 7 to 9 p.m.

Noting “lives are at risk” with the scheduled closure of the Comox Marine Communications and Traffic Services (MCTS) Centre, North Island-Powell River NDP MP Rachel Blaney pressed the

The Wounded Warrior team completed the fourth leg of its journey Thursday, first received at the Oyster River Fire Department and later by supporters at 888 Wing in Comox.

Over the course of seven days, a team of six core members and a support crew ran the length of Vancouver Island, beginning last Monday in Port Hardy and finishing Sunday in Victoria. They averaged 20-plus kilometres a day.

A motto of the relaystyle event is to overcome Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other mental health issues one step at a time.

“It’s helping one another,”

Alan Kobayashi, a co-founder of the Wounded Warrior Run B.C., said at a reception at 888 Wing. “Right here, you are helping me overcome my fears.”

Kobayashi suffers from PTSD, which he says is not limited to military personnel.

It can affect anyone who witnesses a traumatic event.

“Our primary mission is to connect with people, to raise awareness, to let people know it’s bad to isolate yourself,” said Public relations officer Jeff Kibble, who ran about 15 kms/ day alongside a core runner.

He expected Friday to be one of the healthier challenges — about 120 kms between the Valley and Nanaimo.

“There’s a bit of trepidation for the Malahat,” he said.

The Victoria-based runners are mostly veterans or serving members of the military who have been posted around Canada.

Smith is a First Nations runner who first heard about the event two years ago.

“We have First Nations veterans in our communities, and raising awareness for PTSD, it really caught me,” the Brentwood Bay resident said.

This is Smith’s first year as a team member but the third time she has participated in the event. The first two years she was an independent supporter.

“It’s a real learning (experience),” she said. “Being with the group, and such an organized team, it’s pretty amazing. And to visit the Legions and hearing the stories, that is emotional.”

Kibble said the reception along the way has been tremendous.

“People are incredibly generous and do contribute to the run,” he said, noting the Old House Hotel in Courtenay contributed free rooms.

Turn the page, Gord Johns Liberal and NDP candidates in last fall’s federal election did a good job painting the Conservatives as the bad guys, the party the country needed to move away from, put in our rear-view mirror.

Save for about 100 ridings, they succeeded, although the NDP lost ground from the 2011 election and lost Official Opposition status to the Conservatives.

It might be easier for us to forget the Conservatives, move on, if the NDP MP for the riding that includes the Comox Valley didn’t mention them at seemingly every opportunity.

The Ottawa office of Gord Johns has sent us a handful of news releases since being elected.

One was about the MP’s first speech in the House of Commons and the other was about the opening of his constituency offices. Neither could be called issue-based.

Two others that actually dealt with issues included a slap at the Conservative Party.

Johns on gas prices: “The previous government didn’t do anything to protect consumers at the pump...”

From a news release from Johns’ Ottawa office this week in relation to the planned closure of the Marine Communications and Traffic Services (MCTS) Centre in Comox (not a direct Johns quote, but part of the news release): “The MCTS closures are part of the Conservatives’ devastating cuts to the Coast Guard in B.C.” It’s way too early in his mandate to expect real returns from Johns for the Courtenay-Alberni riding. Regardless, the way Ottawa works, our expectations should be low for a third-party backbencher.

Still, it seems kind of petty, kind of yesterday’s news, to fall back on the campaign rhetoric of slamming the Conservatives at every turn, five months after the election. Yeah, we get all that. The Conservatives are the bad guys, yada, yada. Got all that during the campaign, thanks.

Just down the Island Highway and mere weeks after her election, NDP MP Sheila Malcolmson had already met with the chamber of commerce there and she also spoke about specific, federal-money-required projects for her Nanaimo-Ladysmith riding (sewage treatment, the Nanaimo Biological Station, passenger ferry, passenger rail service, just to name a few).

Aside from bashing the Conservatives, we’d like to hear about what arrows MP Johns has in his quiver.

We are seeing this played out with greater force than ever today, by an activist high court that swatted aside Stephen Harper’s attempts to restrain it, and now orders a meek, politically correct Justin Trudeau government to do its bidding.

The Federal Court decreed last week that people have the right to grow their own “medical” marijuana.

This ruling is unlikely to be appealed, given that Trudeau the Younger is committed to legalizing marijuana for everyone.

There are conditions that show measurable relief from marijuana products, such as glaucoma or the nausea and loss of appetite associated with cancer treatments. But much of the so-called medical marijuana industry is based on unsubstantiated claims about an inconsistent herbal remedy that hasn’t been studied much because it’s been illegal.

The Federal Court case involves four people from B.C., which boasts more than half of the contested medi-

The politicians support allowing doctors to opt out of cases they won’t condone, as long as they provide a referral to another doctor.

In Belgium, one of the pioneers of this brave new world, most of the growing number of euthanasia patients have had cancer. But as The New Yorker magazine reported in a ground-breaking article last summer, others have been euthanized because of autism, anorexia, partial paralysis, blindness with deafness, manic-depression and yes, chronic fatigue syndrome.

B.C. Health Minister Terry Lake expressed the hope that Canada ends up with a consistent policy on doctor-assisted suicide, rather than a provincial patchwork.

The closest Lake came to politically incorrect criticism was to caution that “deep discussion” is needed around the court’s notion of a “competent minor,” someone not yet entrusted with the vote or access to a liquor store.

Three dissenting Conservative MPs went so far as to say the recommendations don’t adequately protect seniors who might be coerced into checking out and passing on their estates. How old-fashioned.

One of the petitioners suffers from a vaguely defined condition known as “chronic fatigue syndrome,” which led to a disability pension from a federal civil service job at age 45.

The judge cited no research to support the claim that sitting around smoking dope all day relieves this condition. Indeed it defies common sense that a set of symptoms with no identified cause, which might be confused with what we used to call laziness, would be alleviated by chronic consumption of a drug that promotes eating chips and watching TV. But we peasants aren’t supposed to question our monarchs, especially those in ermine-trimmed red robes at the Supreme Court of Canada.

That court has decreed that our charter, which in Section 7 protects the “right to life, liberty and security of the person,” includes a right to have a doctor’s help to commit suicide. Euthanasia has been re-branded as “assisted dying” by all the most “progressive” countries, and Canada has been given a firm deadline to join the club.

(Meanwhile, the term “right to life” is all but banned from university campuses, to minimize the risk of a coarse literal interpretation that it means, you know, a right to life.)

Croteau Road no place for a pump station

Dear editor, Is your income affected directly or indirectly from dollars generated by tourism, recreation or retirees? If yes, you need to read this and respond to your appropriate council members/mayor immediately.

As an outsider looking in, it is incomprehensible and ill-advised that the proposal to build a new sewage pump station directly on the Croteau Beach foreshore right-ofway at this location on Comox Bay is even being considered.

My husband and I have been visiting the Comox Valley for over 35 years and have rented in Comox for the winter months for the past 10 years. We currently hold property with the hopes of retiring here. All of our shopping is done locally, and 95 per cent of our recreation and entertainment dollars are spent in the Comox Valley.

What keeps us coming back year after year? The quaint rural ambiance, the unspoiled vistas, numerous walking/ hiking trails, and accessible beach areas. It is indeed “a place to inspire, revive and refresh,” and boasts a “relaxed lifestyle complete with a superb sea harbour.”

The Comox Valley is described in your visitor and tourism brochures as “a place of bucolic beaches,” with “picturesque waterfront;” “provides exceptional recreational opportunities” and “offers a plethora of outdoor playground adventures.”

Now... picture viewing the current continuous and natural shoreline of Comox Bay and Comox Estuary from all vantage points. Then... imagine a 3,500-square foot, three-storey industrial structure front and centre of this scenic, unmarred view. If a new sewage pump is required, lobby to have it placed out of sight/sound, and in an area already zoned for industrial development.

Please, please plan for the future generations, and cherish and preserve your pure waters and unique shoreline areas. Once altered, they are gone forever.

Bullying can take many forms

Dear editor: In the same issue (Record Feb. 23), where you bravely tackle bullying, you, perhaps unwittingly, also present a perfect example of same in Letters. One of your headlines read, “Counter measures work better in theory than in reality”. Unfortunately, very true.

Let me side with letter writer Bill McLeod who decried the censure metered out by a rump group to a play named, Play it again, Sam. Three citizens of the Valley showed up to castigate the play and Val MacDonald, president of Courtenay Little Theatre, diplomatically and suitably apologetically offered up regrets.

These are subsequently elaborated upon by a Letter to the Editor.

But the letter also informs that the play was “...very well received, with no subsequent concerns received by the audience members”. Of whom, she states, there were 60.

Sixty satisfied paying theatre-goers versus three discontents putatively representing a group that supposedly no longer exists? Three who have not seen the play?

Bullying as bullying goes.

A link is even drawn by one of the objectors to women who “are murdered and abused in our society”. Because of a quote from an old movie?

However objectionable that one may be, likely not.

You don’t stand next to Galileo just because you, like him, believe the world is round. And you do not censure quotes from plays like The Clouds, in which Aristophanes, asking where lawyers and politicians come from, receives the answer, “From a sprung bum”.

The current meaning of which hardly needs elucidation. Neither does the answer advocate sodomy nor furnish any more than a personal opinion. Same as the abjured quote from, Play it again, Sam. Here is the irony: The very same censorship which has succeeded in achieving abject subjugation, now bars me from citing countless famous men and women who have written or uttered objec-

Trudeau should follow our allies’ lead

Dear editor, On Thursday, Feb. 25 the European Parliament (EP) voted overwhelmingly in favour for its members to impose an embargo on selling arms to Saudi Arabia.

The vote came following many reports of indiscriminate Saudi attacks on targets in Yemen, causing very high civilian casualties. For the past year the world’s richest oil producer has been spearheading a coalition of Arab states forcefully interfering in the ongoing civil war of its much less affluent neighbour.

The EP vote comes just days after Canadian-built Light Armoured Vehicles (LAVs) were identified in Yemen as part of the Saudi Arabian offensive, while Canadian-made rifles are now in Yemeni hands after being captured from the Saudi aggressors.

Those European countries who are now on notice to quit supplying weapons of war to the autocratic desert Kingdom, are all our allies in NATO. Surely, the Canadian government must man-up, and take a leaf out of the book of the EP. Canada is out-of-step with other members of its military alliance in Europe; it’s time for The Chosen One in Ottawa to wake up from his post-election honeymoon slumber, and smell the coffee.

“We were very surprised to see the changes,” said Holt. “They changed the ambience of the Avalanche into what closely resembles, on jazz nights, a really good jazz club. The lighting, good sound, good stage set-up; they removed a lot of the original ceiling ... We constantly get compliments from visiting bands about the ambience of the room, and the sound system.”

Holt said the growth of the GSJS since the change of venues has been steady. There was a bit of a scare when the move first happened, however. The membership immediately dropped, from 90 to about 60 people.

“We were really quite concerned about that,” said Holt. “But what we found was that now that we were visible – people could see us from the street – we picked up quite a bit of incidental foot traffic coming in who didn’t know anything about the society. Our exposure was immediately better, simply due to the location. Our membership immediately started to climb again, and it still is climbing.”

It’s a leap year and that can only mean one thing for Vancouver Island MusicFest fans: Matt Andersen will be in Courtenay in July.

This will mark the New Brunswick roots/blues singer/songwriter’s third appearance at MusicFest, with the other two being 2012 and 2008.

“Of course, that was my plan all along,” deadpanned MusicFest artistic director Doug Cox. “But honestly, there are so many people who are going to be thrilled to hear this announcement.

There is a number of our volunteers who are huge fans, not just of the music, but of the man as well. He’s one of those guys who comes and connects with everybody.”

Andersen says he appreciates any opportunity to play at music festivals, because it allows him the chance to reach out to a broader audience base.

“It’s always a great vibe at these things,” he said in a phone interview last week. “People are often on vacation, or taking time off just to enjoy themselves and it puts them in a good mood. Personally, it gives me a chance to see and be around a bunch of different musicians, where during record-touring season you don’t really get to do … so it’s a real treat for me too.”

He said the Vancouver Island MusicFest is particularly good in that regard.

“Doug does such a great job at getting the acts … there’s always a really nice mix. Always someone on his bucket list and every time I have been there, there’s always someone I really want to see as well.

“And it (Comox Valley) is such a great area too. What

a beautiful place for a festival.”

Andersen’s appeal in the roots and blues scene has been rising consistently ever since his introduction to the industry in 2002.

He won the Maple Blues Award (Canada’s blues awards program) for Male Vocalist of the Year last month, for the third time in five years.

He has also won back-toback Entertainer of the Year and Acoustic Act of the Year Awards, in 2010 and 2011.

“He a pretty powerhouse singer,” said Cox. “There’s a few singers, like Joe Cocker, that are just powerhouses on stage - that they just stand out from everybody else. Matt’s kind of like that.”

The timing for this latest MusicFest announcement is perfect. Andersen just released his 10th CD - Honest Man - on Friday.

Andersen said there are always unique aspects to every album, but Honest Man is not a great departure from his other studio work.

“The biggest thing on this one, the producer Gordon (“Commissioner Gor-

don” Williams), He works so well with drum loops, which is something I have never done before… but other than that, it was just getting together with other songwriters and trying to put together the best songs I could,” he said.

As his popularity and demand grows, so to does his touring schedule. Andersen already has a busy year ahead of him in promotion of the new album - and the summer schedule has yet to be filled.

“Between now and the middle of May we have 64 shows booked,” he said. “So it will probably be at least 200 shows (in 2016). I think last year we did somewhere around 260-270, something like that. I would say that somewhere between 200 and 250 has been the norm the last few years.”

“I would call them the fan favourite to ever play MusicFest, in terms of CD sales, popularity and such,” said Cox. “They’ve kind of become our festival house band, in a way, and also are the band that I have seen the most growth in. Every time they come back, they are very serious students in what they do.”

They will experience a “MusicFest growth spurt” in 2016, as they will play the main stage for the first time.

The Vancouver Island MusicFest runs Friday, July 8 through Sunday, July 10.

CVAG closes exhibition with full day of activities The Comox Valley Art Gallery will mark the closing of Renée Poisson’s sweeping exhibition Meeting the Ground with a full day of activities on Saturday, March 5.

There will be an all-ages Make Art Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., an encore of the community performance We Rise, We Fall at 2 p.m., a book preview and a closing reception.

Activities will start at 11 a.m., when participants in Make Art Saturday will be invited to create and decorate floating assemblages in response to Meeting the Ground.

At 12:30 p.m. participants will go to the Courtenay River to launch the pieces they created.

Make Art Saturday is open to everyone of all ages.

Admission is by donation, and materials are provided by the gallery.

At 2 p.m. there will be a presentation of We Rise, We Fall, a collaborative performance that is part of Poisson’s exhibition Meeting the Ground.

After the performance there will be a preview of a publication that will flow from Meeting the Ground, and following that there will be closing remarks and a reception.

Meeting the Ground, which has been on display at CVAG since Jan. 22, is a multi-faceted exhibition based on several years of Poisson’s artistic inquiry into questions related to aging and death.

Poisson, a Merville resident who has practised art for more than five decades, used sculptural elements, video installation, soundscape, performance, printed material, and interactive public response to explore the theme.

Meeting the Ground is a community exhibition called Falling. This is an ongoing community response to Poisson’s exhibition, where members of the public of all ages are invited to create art that is hung in the CVAG community space.

After that the gallery will close for installation until March 18, when the next exhibition program opens.

The CVAG shop remains open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Make/Repeat/Alter — the next exhibition program at CVAG — will feature the work of artists Eric Lesage, Janet Wang, and fine arts and robotics students from the North Island Distance Education School.

Cassie Sharpe was awesome at the X Games in Oslo on Sunday, Feb. 28, winning gold in the women’s ski superpipe competition.

It was just her second X Games appearance following an impressive fourth place finish in Aspen in her X Games debut earlier this year.

The 23-year-old Comox Valley phenom led after her first run with a score of 86.00 but topped that with an 88.33 on her second run.

She left no doubt of who would be on the middle step at the podium by posting an 87.33 on her third and final run.

Sharpe’s high score of 88.33 held off Olympic champion and four-time X Games gold medallist, Maddie Bowman (USA) for the victory. Bowman scored 85.33 for silver and Japan’s Ayana Onozuka grabbed bronze with 83.66.

The Canadian Freestyle Ski Association notes it is the first X Games held in Oslo and the first time that the event has been held in Europe since 2013.

“I’m on cloud nine right now. I came here knowing that I had a chance to medal, but I never thought I could end up on top with the likes of Maddie Bowman,” said Sharpe.

“I’m so overjoyed and happy. It’s a really crazy moment. When I was growing up, the X Games was the dream and the biggest event you could go to before the Olympic Games added our sport. I’m just so happy to be here and to be able to perform in front of such a huge crowd.”

The Comox Valley Glacier Kings are hoping the score in the third game of their quarter-final playoff series with the Nanaimo Buccaneers is not a foreshadowing of how the series will finish.

The Icemen will be looking to avoid being swept from post-season play tonight when they host Nanaimo in a 7 p.m. start at Comox Valley Sports Centre Arena #1.

On Feb. 27 at SC#1, the Bucs opened a 2-0 lead in the first period then tacked on one more in each of the next two frames. The

G-Kings out-shot the Bucs 29-28, with Nanaimo goalie Alex Orth earning first star honours. Marcus Gloss took the loss.

Nanaimo went 1-for-6 on the power play and tallied a shorthanded goal while the Icemen went 0-for-6 with the man advantage. Tempers flared in the third period, with both teams sending a steady parade of players to the sin bin.

The Buccaneers went up 2-0 in the series Feb. 25 in Nanaimo when they edged the Icemen 3-2 in overtime.

Will Koop netted the winner at 4:52 of the first OT on the power play.

Working overtime was Comox Valley goalie Gloss as Nanaimo out-shot Comox Valley 40-25. He earned third star honours for his efforts.

After a scoreless first peri-

od in which Nanaimo outshot the visitors 16-6, the Bucs went up 2-0 early in the second only to have the G-Kings pull even late in the frame on goals by Nick Novin and Brayden McCartney.

But McCartney took a tripping penalty at 4:12 of OT, and Koop batted in a rebound to give the Bucs the win.

If the G-Kings win tonight, Game 5 would go Thursday, March 3 in Nanaimo. Other games if needed would be March 5 in Courtenay and March 6 in Nanaimo.

Whalers take second at McNeill tourney The Courtenay Whalers women’s hockey team was on the road again this past weekend, taking the trek up-Island for the annual Port McNeill Downpour hockey tournament.

Their first game Friday night against the Port Hardy Juice Heads was full of great end-to-end action. The Whalers were able to find the back of the net more often and that resulted in a 5-2 win for the Whalers.

Saturday morning the ladies met the Port Hardy Wild. The Whalers were a much stronger team and came out of that game with another win.

Later on Saturday they played the home team, Port McNeill Downpour.

The Whalers kept the

opposing team at bay during the first period, only to have them score twice in the second.

With some quick thinking and line changes the Whalers got back in the game during the third and scored twice to tie it up. Final score was 2-2 and the Whalers were heading to the finals on Sunday.

Sunday’s game

started off on the right foot, with the Whalers putting two in the net quickly during the first period. That lead was short-lived though and after some tough penalty calls and a couple of questionable recalled goals, the Whalers couldn’t get organized again and frustrations ran high.

Final score for the game was 8-3 for the

opposing team, the Victoria Furies.

But after some reminiscing in the locker room about the fun times had during the weekend, the Whalers left Port McNeill with smiles on their faces and looking forward to the next big tourney weekend in Campbell River happening in April.

The Whalers’ season is starting to

Alongside its membership, the society’s reputation continues to grow within the jazz scene.

“We have the reputation as a place where people come specifically to listen to the music,” said Holt. “And, particularly with the out-of-town performers... they’ve gone away and said to their col-

leagues and their peers, ‘We played in Courtenay, and you wouldn’t believe the place.’ The result of that is, Bill Street, who handles the bookings, is receiving requests from all over, to play here.”

A sure sign of success is when the booker is getting the calls, rather than placing them.

The concerts continue this week, with the Strathcona Big Band taking to the stage.

Cumberland Crate Company growing and diversifying The proprietors of the Cumberland Crate Company have been enjoying a 350 per cent annual growth rate since opening for business in January of 2014.

In their first year, Archie Pateman and Roderick Lane were mostly doing business on the Island, but their products are now reaching stores in Vancouver and throughout North America. The big ones are Saje Natural Wellness in Canada and LUSH Fresh Handmade Cosmetics. The latter uses Cumberland crates for store displays across the continent.

“We’re spreading the religion of the crates,” Pateman said. “It’s such a simple idea, but so functional and helpful. Our market is so broad that we’re starting to see us pop up all over the place.”

Pateman and Lane use Vancouver Island wood to construct crates that can be used for a variety of purposes, such as storing record collections or wine bottles. The Old Funk, for instance, holds about 100 albums. But the big seller is the Flying Frenchman, a cedar crate that attaches to the back of a bicycle rat trap.

It is capable of holding two growlers, with room to spare for other items.

“A big facet of our income now is merchandising of stores,” Pateman said.

The company is also making apps for phones and other devices with buttons. These include the Invisibility App, the Phone Boomerang and the Shhh App.

Born in Vancouver BC, Predeceased by wife Patricia Margaret Jones.

Dick is survived by one brother, five children, five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

A hardworking father who was in the ship building industry, for over 40 years. He became a life long member of the Marine Workers and Boiler Makers Union.

In earlier years he was an enthusiastic out-doorman, spending time with his children camping and fishing. An accomplished amateur musician, he played the cello in the New Westminster Symphony Orchestra.

A family gathering was held at his residence to celebrate his life.

Always a great presence, his stories and reflections will always have a profound place in our memories and hearts.

Pat passed away peacefully early Monday morning. She will be deeply missed by her four sisters; Janet Reaney (Joe), Jo Reaney, Beth Reaney Doidge (Lesley) and Gail Reaney and two brothers; Bourke Reaney (Harriett) and Martin Reaney; and all of her many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Pat also leaves behind her daughter, Kim Passmore (Josh) and her beloved grandson, Tyler. Pat and Tyler shared a very special bond with each other. Predeceased by her parents, Richard (Dick) and Mary (Jane) Reaney. Pat was very independent and proud; and faced her disease with such dignity and courage. We will miss her wicked sense of humour. May 31, 1924 ~ December 9, 2015 Mrs. Evelyn May Johnston (nee Mitchell), 91, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2015 at Comox Valley Seniors Village, in Courtenay, BC. Evelyn was born May 31, 1924 in Edmonton, Alberta, where, during her schooling she was introduced to art which was to become her lifelong joy.

In 1948 Ev moved from Victoria, BC to Yellowknife, NWT following her first husband, Lorne Sykes, who was prospecting with her father, Alex Mitchell. Here she made long time friends as an early member of the Daughters of the Midnight Sun. It was also in Yellowknife that Ev met her second husband, Bill Johnston.

Ev worked as a teaching assistant at William MacDonald School until 1978 when she retired with Bill and their son Graham to the Comox Valley where she enjoyed family visits, numerous friends, hiking, pottery, and painting in various media. Her artistic accomplishments included several independent showings of her work, the design and overseeing of the four sided mosaic at Comox Airport and the receipt of an honourary degree from The North Island College.

Evelyn was predeceased by her husband, Bill, on March 3, 1991; by her parents, Alexander and Gladys (Harris) Mitchell; an infant sister; and stepson, Douglas Johnston.

Surviving Evelyn is her sister, Dorothy Meiklejohn of Edmonton; her daughters Penelope (John) Shapperd of Golden, BC; Cheryl Franceschi of Calgary, AB; and Heather Johnston (David Dickins) of La Jolla, CA; her son Graham Johnston (Hilary Russell) of Vancouver; and two stepdaughters Margaret (Bill) Tuttle of Medicine Hat, AB and Mary Jacko (Gerry Roberts) of Calgary, AB. Ev’s numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren are a lasting legacy.

Many thanks to the nurses and care aides at Comox Valley Seniors Village and to Charline Law for their untiring and loving care of Ev during her final years.

She will always be remembered in the many homes of family and friends where her artwork is displayed, reminding us all of her enjoyment of life as she created, danced, sang and joked to the end.

A Celebration of Evelyn’s life will be held on Saturday, August 6th at 1:00pm at Piercy’s Funeral Home, 440 England Ave, Courtenay, BC. Donations in memory of Evelyn may be made to the charity or organization of your choice.

Mabel Edith (Anne) Hilliar July 12, 1918 – February 11, 2016

We are sad to announce that our Mom, Mabel Edith (Anne) Hilliar died on February 11, 2016. She was 97. She was predeceased by her husband Wilf (1993).

Mom was the matriarch of our family, outliving all but one of the relatives of her generation in both the Hilliar family and her own Heywood family. She is survived by her cousin Stan in Ontario, nieces and nephews in England and Canada, her two sons, Ralph and Chris (Molly), and grandchildren Anna and Graham.

Mom worked as a Red Cross nurse during the Second World War and received the British Empire Medal for her service. She helped nurse our Dad (Wilf) back to health after he was hospitalized in Wales.

They immigrated to Canada in 1947 after marrying in Manchester England. They traveled to New York on the Queen Mary and then across Canada by train to Dad’s home on Salt Spring Island. The next year they came to the Comox Valley and bought a farm on Condensory Road where they lived until 1974. On Dad’s retirement they moved to Powerhouse Road and enjoyed various world travels with friends.

Mom had a great voice and sang in various choirs. She was active in the United Church Women, the Eastern Star and the War Brides Association. She continued to meet with war bride friends well into her 90’s and they gave her great comfort.

In Mom’s final years she lived at Casa Loma and The Views at St. Joseph’s. We want to thank her many caregivers from both establishments for their care and attention. We also want to thank Dr Woldnik, Dr. Tancon, Dr. Nap and nurse practioner Erica Maynard for their care.

A memorial tea will be held on Sunday March 13th from 2 – 4pm at the Florence Filberg Evergreen Senior’s Lounge in Courtenay. If desired, donations can be made to “The Views� at St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation.

Glenn Loxam and Peter Jacques have joined the campaign for the two seats open for election at this year’s annual general meeting of the Union Bay Improvement District (UBID).

Both gentlemen have formally submitted their nomination forms and are prepared to challenge the previously announced candidates.

Jacques is a retired RCMP officer with 30 years of service, while Loxam works as a lineman for BC Hydro. Both will bring qualities of leadership, responsibility and accountability to the board.

They are community-minded individuals who enjoy volunteering in their community with a hands-on approach. They help with the Union Bay Community Hall, the boat ramp, the local museum, the church, and elsewhere when needs arise.

Realizing that the people of Union Bay need changes, both men firmly believe that the present board does not reflect the wishes of the majority of Union Bay landowners.

Last summer, 66 per cent of landowners made it clear when they petitioned the UBID board to allow Kensington Island Properties (KIP) to follow through with the new water system, as determined under the Water Infrastructure Agreement In subsequent statements by the board of trustees, the 424 petitioning landowners were brushed

aside with false calculations and remote promises.

“It seems the present board has its own agenda and constantly ignores the wishes of our community,” said Loxam.

“The board needs to sit down and talk with KIP, and work out the indifference’s regarding a new water filtration system,” said Jacques.

It’s something both Loxam and Jacques are prepared to do.

“Change needs to happen now, as Kensington is prepared to move forward with or without us,” said both candidates.

“When elected, we will do everything in our power to bring about change and provide the community with the sustainable development already approved by the CVRD,” said Loxam. “As a result of the non-accountability and unacceptable attitude of the board, we are seeking the vote of Union Bay landowners to put the ‘trust’ back into the position of trustee.”

They urge Union Bay residents to get out and vote on April 2 at 1 p.m. at the Union Bay Community Hall. They are prepared to arrange rides to the hall for those who may need one. There will also be an advance poll at the UBID office on March 21 (2-7 p.m.) for those who can’t make the election on April 2.
