One day last November, Mohammad received a seemingly random text message: A United Nations official had opened his family’s file and put them on track to go to Canada – destination Abbotsford.

Since fleeing the escalating Syrian civil war, Mohammad, 28, had been living in limbo for years. Like millions of his countrymen and women, his previously normal life had been shattered by an evolving conflict that saw a small country torn to shreds by warring factions.

Engaged but not yet married to Heba, Mohammad had been just two courses shy of his economics degree when he left his country behind in 2012.

With his city under bombardment and communication systems out, Mohammad passed through 10 checkpoints, each one with the possibility that the military would drag him out of his car on a whim or because he shared a name with someone else.

Scooters stolen from seniors in apartment building Loss means impact to mobility of victims, aged 85 and 92

The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) is asking for the public’s help in trying to locate two mobility scooters that were stolen from two seniors overnight last Thursday (Feb. 4).

Const. Paul Walker said the scooters were stolen from an apartment building in the 31600 block of Charlotte Avenue.

They belonged to two residents, ages 85 and 92.

“As you can imagine, this has deeply impacted their ability to get around our community,” Walker said.

He said police do not currently have any leads on the thefts and are appealing to the public to help locate the scooters or the person/people responsible.

The scooters are described as a red Pursuit XL with canopy and windshield attached and a blue Shoprider.

Anyone with information is asked to call the APD at 604-859-5225 or text abbypd (222973).

“By the time we reached the airport, it was like a miracle,” he said through an interpreter.

He lived for more than a year with his brother in the United Arab Emirates but, unable to obtain permanent residency, he moved to Jordan along with his parents and hundreds of thousands of other displaced Syrians.

He would later be joined there by Heba. In different times, they would have got married in a three-day ceremony and party in the large backyard of Mohammad’s family home. Instead, their two-hour wedding was held in a hotel in Jordan in the spring of 2014. While Mohammad’s family was prominent, only Heba’s sister was able to attend.

Interviewed and registered as refugees in Jordan, Mohammad and Heba had no homeland or long-term prospects. Unable to complete their degrees or find decent work, they lived in a small apartment for more than a year as the war in Syria dragged on.

Into this stasis, their daughter Jana was born last April.

As she was taking her first breaths, hundreds of thousands of other refugees were on the move, desperate to escape their homeland, and the images that documented their flight last year would stir the world to act.

In Canada, pressure was growing on government while, at the same time, local groups were organizing to see how they could help.

October’s federal election saw the Liberals sweep into power, bringing with them a promise to bring tens of thousands of refugees to Canada. Smaller groups were also mobilizing, including the Abbotsford Interfaith Movement, a group of men and women from a range of faiths teaming up to pay for 60 per cent of the costs of a refugee family.

A month later, Mohammad received the text message that notified him that he had been placed on track to move to Canada with his young family. After subsequent interviews, he would later meet a Canadian whom he described as very nice and who gave him the news that his application had been approved.

“It was a relief. I was happy that I was going to change my situation, I was going to change my life.”

His parents were supportive, even if it meant him flying around the globe.

“It’s a mixed feeling. They were sad I was going to leave, but happy for my new future.”

Getting to Canada wasn’t easy. After an aborted phone call on Jan. 25 promised a flight three days later, a promised follow-up with more details never materialized. On Jan. 27, still with no information, Mohammad drove hours to Amman, the Jordanian capital to seek some clarity.

There he got an answer. His flight would depart in a little more than 12 hours.

Mohammad raced back to his apartment, where he had just six hours to pack up some possessions, say goodbye and get ready to move to a new country.

“It’s impossible,” Heba said, when Mohammad explained their impending departure.

But the next day, the family boarded a plane to Canada. More than 24 hours later, after stops in Montreal and Toronto, they arrived at Vancouver International Airport to the surprise that they were privately sponsored, with a large group of people working to ease their transition.

At the airport, nine people stood eagerly waiting for the family’s arrival and bearing a sign with their names spelled out in both Arabic and English. The first nights after their arrival were spent with the family of Lynn Gamache, a member of the interfaith group. By the time Mohammad spoke to The News a week later, the group had already helped his family move into a furnished apartment in central Abbotsford.

Since arriving in Canada, everything has gone according to plan, he said.

“When I decided to migrate to Canada, it was my decision to change my life. It’s right. It’s different for me and my family.

There are some differences in the house, the lifestyle, but my plan was to change my life.”

Mohammad has lived away from his Syrian hometown many times in his life, and although the distance between Daraa and Abbotsford may be farther than he’s ever experienced, he finally has a chance to build a new home. Just a week into that new life, as he scans a news story about dozens of other refugees bound for Abbotsford, he is already comfortable enough in his new country to consider offering his own unique help to the Syrians following in his footsteps.

“I’m happy because I have a new future in front of me.”

Accused denies killing Abbotsford woman Tyler OLSEN Abbotsford News

Ian Michael Hewitt will admit to helping dispose of Angela Crossman’s body but deny stabbing and killing the Abbotsford woman in 2009, his lawyer told a jury during the defence’s opening statements at Hewitt’s first-degree murder trial in B.C. Supreme Court.

Defence lawyer Daniel Henderson said his client falsely confessed when he told friends, undercover officers, and homicide investigators that he killed Crossman.

Instead, Henderson said Hewitt will testify that it was his now-dead best friend Alex

Paul who killed Crossman.

Hewitt and Crossman were both staying at Paul’s Hillcrest Avenue home at the time of the killing. The Crown alleges that Paul asked Hewitt to kill Crossman because the 39-year-old woman, who suffered from mental health problems, was causing problems at home, where his wife and two children also lived.

During a complex police sting, Hewitt told undercover officers that in the early-morning hours of June 11, 2009, he choked and stabbed Crossman and slit her throat at Elbow Lake, near Harrison Lake. Her body was found later that day.

But in laying out the defence’s case Tuesday, Henderson said it was Paul who, after returning home from a nearby pub drunk and upset, strangled Crossman in his backyard while Hewitt was inside.

Henderson said Paul then commissioned Hewitt, with whom he’d been drinking, to help dispose of the body.

Paul then drove the body to Elbow Lake, where the body was dumped, according to the defence’s narrative. Hewitt will testify, Henderson said, that Paul later told him that at Elbow Lake he stabbed and cut the throat of Crossman’s body to give the appearance that a serial killer had murdered her.

Paul is now dead, having been shot by a friend after an altercation less than a month after Crossman’s killing. That friend cited self-defence and was later acquitted of second-degree murder. Hewitt was present at the site of that killing as well. Henderson said Paul was known to be “unpredictable and violent” when he was drunk and upset.

Henderson said Hewitt will recant his confessions. Hewitt was recruited by a friend who became a police agent, and who said he worked for a criminal organization as a hitman. The players in various scenarios staged to draw Hewitt in were undercover police officers.

Disclosing how many community mailboxes have been broken into in Abbotsford would lead to more crime, claims Canada Post.

In response to a wave of thefts from community mailboxes that hit Abbotsford last summer, The News requested a variety of data regarding the prevalence of mail crime in Abbotsford and Mission from the Crown corporation under the federal Access to Information Act. The News requested records relating to the number of thefts from mailboxes in the two communities, the number of mailboxes replaced because of theft or vandalism, and information on those costs. Requests were also made for any records relating to arrests of mail thieves.

In response to the request for the number of thefts, Canada Post wrote that the records weren’t released because they contained information that “is used to protect the Canada Post network and our customers against

The letter also says the information is “of significant commercial value to the corporation and could be harmful to its competitive position if released.� That is despite the fact that Canada Post has a government-mandated monopoly on the non-courier delivery of mail weighing less than 500 grams.

Canada Post has not always taken such a hard line.

In 2013, the corporation released 141 pages of documents in response to a request for copies of reported incidents in B.C. over a five-year period. The News submitted its request using nearly identical wording, but Canada Post withheld all records, citing the same security concerns.

A Canada Post Freedom of Information official said that

while the wording was similar, the documents in question had changed between 2013 and 2016, prompting them to be withheld.

Sean Holman, a former reporter specializing in FOI requests who is now a professor at Mount Royal University, said the ability of Canada Post to withhold such records reflects problems in the country’s freedom of information laws. “This is another example of how Canada’s freedom of information laws are actually censorship laws,� Holman said. “The exemptions and exceptions in them are used and abused to legally hide embarrassing information that the public should have a right to know about. “It’s outrageous that Canada Post would deny the public this kind of information. Aggregate data on mail crime arrests would certainly help the public understand how successful law enforcement has been at keeping their correspondence safe. But it’s difficult to see how it would help criminals,� Holman said.

Gladys camp stays up as deadline passes City has yet to apply for injunction to move homeless

City authorities visited the Gladys Avenue homeless protest camps on Wednesday afternoon to remind occupants they are required to move.

A deadline for the homeless protest camp on Gladys Avenue to move came and went Wednesday without any substantial action by residents or the city.

The city has adopted a new bylaw that permits overnight camping in most parks, but which designates the Gladys rightof-way as a “highway.�

Last week, residents of the camp had been told to move from the site by Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Residents of a nearby encampment on city land between Gladys Avenue and Cyril Street were also reminded that they must take down their shelters during the day. The protest camp on Gladys has shrunk in recent weeks, while the Cyril camp has grown. On Wednesday, several people were present at the Cyril camp, while there were few signs of people staying at the Gladys site.

Mayor Henry Braun has said that while the Gladys encampment is unsafe and must come down, the city will take a gradual approach and hopes to find housing for residents. Abbotsford has not yet applied for the court injunction that would precede any forced eviction of the site.

Protesters fear peace in forests Tom

B.C. Views After 20 years of representing B.C. coastal First Nations to negotiate what U.S.-directed activists labeled the Great Bear Rainforest agreement, a weary Dallas Smith expressed his relief and frustration.

At a ceremony to sign the final agreement in Vancouver last week, Smith, president of the Nanwakolas Council of remote Central Coast communities like Bella Bella, joked that he’s finally out of a job. Then he got serious.

“My communities still aren’t better places to live yet,” he said. But the land use agreement with the province and forest companies over a vast coastal area up to the Alaska border means the years ahead will be better.

He said when he started it was like being caught in a divorce between the B.C. for-

est industry and international environmental groups. Dutch-based Greenpeace, its California offshoot ForestEthics and others moved on from their Clayoquot Sound battle to the B.C. coast, looking to continue the blockades against logging.

“It’s the First Nations of the Coast who stood up and said ‘No, this is how it’s going to work,’ ” Smith said.

How it’s going to work is that logging will continue on 550,000 hectares of coastal forest, with a greater share for First Nations, and with 85 per cent of the region preserved after a century of logging that began with sailing ships.

Aside from a few diehards who are either paid to protest or can’t get past issuing demands, B.C. aboriginal people have grown tired of being used as props in global de-marketing campaigns directed from San Francisco or Amsterdam. The protesters’ tactic of organizing customer boycotts that damage far-away economies might be good for international fundraising, but it’s bad for poor people.

Formally begun 10 years ago with $30 mil-

lion from Ottawa, $30 million from B.C. and $60 million from a group of U.S. family foundations with a larger anti-development agenda, the land use plan remains under attack.

Among the many protest outfits is Pacific Wild, which has specialized in Great Bear Rainforest campaigns and now needs a new enemy. Their credibility was demonstrated

from the Kootenay and South Peace regions where the wolves in question actually roam.

After periodically attacking their own B.C. agreement as inadequate, Greenpeace and ForestEthics have moved on to what they call the “boreal forest,” which we like to call northern Canada. The same bully tactics with forest products customers and producers have been featured.

This time, a Quebec company that signed an accord in 2010 is suing Greenpeace for “defamation, malicious falsehood and intentional interference in economic relations.”

Aboriginal companies on the B.C. coast will continue to log, including areas of old-growth forest and secondary growth. They will continue to export logs as economics dictate.

They will continue to harvest animals, including grizzly bears.

And, I expect, they will continue to be subjected to attempts to supervise and direct them by members of urban society’s new religion, environmentalism.

letters Public and private overspending Many conversations have been held about whether politicians should be held accountable when they overspend budgets by requiring them to pay the first dollars before dinging taxpayers. Support for this notion is overwhelming with one caveat: How do we handle recessions?

What should families do to prepare for tough economic times? Should we spend all of the paycheque and then borrow for emergencies, or save some income for the unexpected?

For many, the answer is obvious: Save along the way. But this is not the norm these days. In 2000, the average family’s personal debt (excluding mortgages) equaled one year’s income, but by 2015 ballooned to 165 per cent.

In other words, a family earning $100,000 now owes $165,000. Taxes consume 42 per cent ($42,000, and 37 per cent ($37,000) pays for food, shelter and clothing. Factor in car(s) and expenses for vacation, recreation, communication devices, furniture, appliances, charities, gifts, restaurants, etc.

And, of course, there is that nasty interest charge on debt. How can people save for times when experiencing unemployment or mortgage rate hikes?

Most, it seems, use their credit card. After all, our leaders in government use their “credit card” to borrow from the next generation.

Canadians now pay approximately $50B in annual interest for federal and provincial government debt.

The average taxpayer contributes $2,300 annually toward this debt and $4,600 per couple if both work.

Canada is facing economic hard times and many voices are saying, “Increase spending on infrastructure during economic recession.” Costs for labour are lower and injecting money into the economy keeps the cycle moving.

Fifty billion dollars per year builds a lot of bridges, highways, schools and hospitals.

This is the legacy of politicians dating back 50 years ago when incurring deficits became the norm.

Our leaders cannot operate within budget; yet, they chide citizens to control theirs. Eventually, bankruptcy is the only way out for taxpayers, but uncontrollable politicians just hike taxes.

Do we really want government to add another $40B annually to our debt so that they can enjoy another photo-op? Making hard choices is their job and, when they refuse, holding them accountable by requiring them to pay extra from their government paycheque makes sense. This method will reduce their propensity to borrow from our children.

Vijay Manuel named head of MEI Schools The former principal of Abbotsford Traditional middle school and vice-principal of W. J. Mouat secondary has been appointed the head of schools for MEI (Mennonite Educational Institute).

Vijay Manuel was appointed to the position effective Feb. 1 and is responsible for the leadership and management of all aspects of MEI Schools, including the learning experience from preschool to graduation.

Manuel is a 1991 graduate of MEI, where he participated in music and athletics and served as student body president.

Production runs for three dates at Abbey Arts Centre Yale Secondary’s musical theatre department presents its production of the Broadway musical The Wiz starting this weekend.

The production is a rollicking familyfriendly retelling of the Wizard of Oz set to rock, soul, and gospel music and is famous for the Michael Jackson, Diana Ross version in the 1970s.

The story of Dorothy’s trip through the land of Oz with the S c a re c row, Tinman and Lion is familiar to many but this version brings an urban vibe to the rural tale of finding the strength in oneself to tackle the big problems in life.

The show takes place at the Abbotsford Arts Centre (2329 Crescent Way) on Sunday, Feb. 14 at 2:30 p.m. and Friday, Feb. 19 and Saturday, Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m.

A five-year-old Abbotsford girl will be among the children featured on the Variety Show of Hearts Telethon this weekend.

Emily Blundell will be featured as one of Steve’s Little Darlings.

Emily, who lives with her parents Marilou and Michael and little sister Ellie, has hemiplegia, epilepsy and hydrocephalus (fluid on the brain), is also developmentally delayed in speech and uses a wheelchair for longer periods of walking.

Variety helped the family by funding eyeglasses, a plagiocephaly helmet for Emily in 2011, and an adaptive tricycle in 2015.

Emily currently attends kindergarten at Abbotsford Christian School.

The telethon, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary, takes place on Saturday, Feb. 13 and Sunday, Feb. 14 on Global TV. It raises money for Variety – The Children’s Charity.

On behalf of Abbotsford City Council, I’m pleased to present you with this report, which provides a snapshot of some of our key accomplishments at the City of Abbotsford for 2015.

Guiding all of the work you see reflected here is Council’s vision for the community – that Abbotsford is the Hub of the Fraser Valley. This vision sees Abbotsford as a preferred destination for residents and businesses alike, and provides the foundation for our service delivery to the community.

As the Hub City, Abbotsford will become the regional centre of the communities of the Fraser Valley.

The City of Abbotsford will be home to regionally centralized services and agencies including health care, courts, transportation, the university, the airport, provincial and federal government services, entertainment and cultural facilities, and commerce.

You’ll see the principles behind these four Cornerstones reflected in every decision we make, from municipal planning decisions for the growth of our community through to departmental business planning and budgeting efforts. Council’s 20152018 Strategic Plan provides the details supporting the realization of this vision through our goals for the next three years and I encourage you to read through this Plan.

Talked to 6,700 residents in 2015 about Abbotsforward, the update of the Official Community Plan that outlines how our community will grow to 200,000 people.

Installed 3 new playgrounds, and upgraded 9 park washroom facilities.

Installed Four Little FREE Libraries in our parks in partnership with the Rotary Club of Abbotsford-Sumas. Last year, over 40,000 books were distributed in the community through the “Take a Book Read a Book Boxes.”

In 2015, nearly 20,000 people took swimming lessons and 750,000 people visited our 2 recreation centres.

Abbotsford has 157 parks consisting of over 2,584 acres of parkland and 98 kilometers of trails.

84% of residents live within 500m of a park. Fostering natural beauty was an idea that many people wanted to see in future city plans.

Partnered with the Abbotsford Food Bank to support the Christmas in July collection at Fire Hall 7 and the annual Food Bank Parade with Save-On-Foods and the Fraser Valley Automall in December.

The City of Abbotsford is a regional hub of creativity and innovation where talent, investment and business thrive.

In 2015, the Abbotsford Centre ranked in the top 200 of entertainment venues worldwide and was the 2nd busiest in BC. With the Open for Business Award from the BC Small Business Roundtable the City received $10,000 to support the growth of local small businesses.

The City launched a new Economic Development brand and strategy to help spread the word that Abbotsford is “open for business.”

The new Business Walks Program uncovered that 93% of Abbotsford businesses indicated ‘steady’ or ‘increasing’ business growth.

In 2015 the Abbotsford International Airport welcomed 475,000 passengers, a new WestJet service to Las Vegas, and Air Canada “rouge” service to Toronto.

ACHIEVING

The City of Abbotsford is transparent and accountable to citizens, information is easily accessible and residents are well informed on Council’s priorities.

Fire Rescue Service replaced Fire Hall 4 (Matsqui) and Fire Hall 5 (Mt. Lehman) and saved a total of $600,000 by building two identical fire halls at the same time with one contractor.

The City received $57,000 of funding for innovative forestry initiatives and restoration, and $18,000 for improving walkability in the Clearbrook area for seniors.

The roads crew paved 30 km of local roads, filled 1,261 potholes, patched 13,392 m2 of road surface, sealed 125,049 metres of cracks, graded 88 km of gravel roads and repaired 150 m2 of sidewalk as part of our infrastructure maintenance program.

Development activity saw an increase of 60% in total construction value over 2014; an increase of 22% in land development applications received; and an increase of 27% in new commercial floor space from 2014.

The Building Department issued 6,462 business licences - which includes intermunicipal business licences, where businesses can get one license to operate in 11 different local communities, including Abbotsford.

The City implemented an e-Billing program which allows residents to receive tax and utility bills via email.

In 2015, the city website had over 1,196,110 visits, with 22,542 of those visits from mobile devices, which is an increase of 13% in mobile activity over 2014!

The City issued 51 news bulletins, has 6,129 followers on Twitter, and received 1,887 likes on our Facebook page.

The operations yard processed 7,200 service requests from residents.

The City Clerk’s Office processed 469 Freedom of Information requests.

Parks crews planted 42,000 bulbs, 17,250 flowers and 100 shrubs.

Sewer crews flushed 114 km of sewer main to ensure the system operated efficiently without backups.

During the dry months of May and June of 2015, Fire Rescue Service responded to 92 grass, brush and bark mulch fires compared to 80 fires in all of May, June, July, August and September of 2014.

The City improved fire fighter safety and training opportunities by constructing a live-fire burn building with fire hydrants at the AFRS Training Centre.

Our engineering team talked water conservation with 5,000 households, processed 500 toilet rebates and 200 high-efficiency washing machine rebates.

Back in 1891, the very first Swiss Army knife was produced.

The multi-tool item was designed as a convenient way to have access to several useful attachments at any given time.

Close to 125 years later, the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s basketball team has a Swiss Army knife of their own in stat-stuffing guard Kevon Parchment.

He may not fit in your pocket, but he brings scoring, rebounding, assists, steals and blocks – all in a 6’3” package.

When Cascades head coach Adam Friesen is in trouble, chances are he reaches for Parchment, only this valuable tool was made in Jamaica, not Switzerland.

Parchment is the only player in Canada West who has hovered in the top-10 for points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks all season long. He’s also been the key player holding the team together in the wake of injuries that have plagued the Cascades for much of the season.

UFV sits in second place in the Explorer division with 10 wins and six losses, and much of that is thanks to Parchment’s play.

He moved to Canada at the age of five, and it wasn’t hockey that gripped him and his friends; it was basketball.

“When I moved to Toronto it was the thing to do,” he said.

“Growing up in the [Vince] Carter era, the Raptors and basketball were huge. I’d go outside and everyone was playing basketball.”

Parchment played high school basketball in Toronto before he red-shirted for a junior college in Florida. After a year in the Sunshine

State, he followed several high school friends north – to Alberta’s Lakeland College in Lloydminster, Alta.

He helped lead the Lakeland Rustlers to a perfect 20-0 season, but they were ousted early in the playoffs.

That season landed Parchment on the radar of the Cascades and head coach Adam Friesen, who was an assistant coach at the time.

“His ability to affect the game in so many different ways is what we noticed,” Friesen said. “And just how hard he works on the floor.”

in the 2012-13 season and immediately made an impact. He was on the starting lineup from day one, and was able to give his team whatever they needed.

“When he first came in, we had other great scorers like Kyle Grewal, so he used his passing and defence to make others better,” Friesen said. “He was – and still is – our number one perimeter defender; he led our fast break transition and has always rebounded the ball so well.”

Now this year, he is the main cog for the Cascades.

“He’s gone from a secondary player early on to the guy with the basketball in his hands, creating and scoring for himself,” he said. “He’s had to step up this year in terms of leadership because of all of our injuries and he’s provided a lot of stability for this group. We can always look to him to perform and give everyone a sense of calm. He keeps us in games and gives us a chance to win.”

His ability to rebound is a skill that has set Parchment apart. The fact that the guard ranks fourth in the Canada West for rebounds is even puzzling to his coach.

“I don’t know how he rebounds so well; it’s nothing I’ve taught him,” Friesen joked. “He has a nose for it. He gets in there and somehow comes away with the basketball. It’s impressive.”

Parchment’s legacy at UFV is something Friesen doesn’t take lightly, noting that he’ll be in the discussion as one of the top players that have ever played at UFV. “He belongs right up there with Grewal, Sam Freeman and Jasper Moot.”

Parchment enjoys the individual accolades, but said he wants to bring a banner to UFV. He was part of the Cascades Canada West bronze medal-winning team last year, but wants more.

Parchment and the Cascades host the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack on Friday and Saturday, and then conclude the season in Calgary for a pair of games against the Mount Royal University Cougars.

It’s playoff time for high school basketball, and no team is entering the postseason hotter than the Yale Lions junior boys basketball team.

The Lions are on an 18-game winning streak since before Christmas, including tournament wins at the Greg Taylor Classic on Vancouver Island, Enver Creek and their home tournament.

Along the way, Yale sharpshooter Bradley Braich established a new single-game record for scoring in a 32-minute junior boys game. Braich lit the scoreboard up in January, scoring 51 points, including nine three-pointers.

Yale is seeded second in the Abbotsford Mission Secondary Sports Athletic Association city tournament, and opened with a 91-50 win on Tuesday.

Other action saw Hansen beat Mission 56-43, MEI beat ACS 8228, and Mouat beating Abby Senior 76-41. The finals for the junior boys occurs at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday at MEI. The top five teams from the tournament move on to the Fraser Valley tournament, and then seven teams from that event advance to the provincials. MEI, Mouat and Yale have been consistently

ranked in the top 10 in the province all season.

“The zone is very tough,” said Lions junior boys head coach Bobby Braich. “But we’re going into the playoffs on a high. The guys know their roles and they grind it out, and I think they know what they need to do to win.”

Mouat also enters the tournament on a hot streak, after winning the Notre Dame tournament on Saturday.

The Hawks picked up a default win over Bodwell to open the tournament, and then beat the St. Thomas Aquinas 73-49 in the semi-final.

They then defeated the host Notre Dame 50-45 in the final.

Hawks player Harvir Garcha was named tournament MVP. Mouat heads into the tournament ranked third.

The MEI Eagles, a perfect 10-0 in league play, enter the tournament as the number one seed. Hansen is ranked fourth, with a record of 7-3.

Other top seeds for the ASSAA tournaments occurring this week include: Abbotsford Middle Huskies (Grade 8 boys), WA Fraser Falcons (Grade 8 girls), Mouat Hawks (Grade 9 boys), Abbotsford Christian Knights (Grade 9 girls), and Yale Lions (junior girls).

MEI Hockey Skills returns Ben LYPKA Abbotsford News

It’s time once again for a handful of local hockey players to showcase their skills.

MEI is hosting its second annual Hockey Skills Event today (Friday) from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Centre Ice, with schools from throughout the region participating.

Competitions run on both rinks starting at 9 a.m. For two hours, Grade 6 to 12 players will rotate through the six skills stations, competing in fastest skater, hardest shot, stickhandling, multi-directional skating, shooting accuracy and a goalie competition.

Following the skills

competition, guest speaker Ryan Walter will talk to the youth about leadership, performance and activating positive change both on and off the ice.

After lunch, all players participate in a three-on-three tournament for several hours.

The schools attending the event are: MEI middle and secondary, Robert Bateman secondary, Chilliwack middle, Hatzic middle, R. E. Mountain secondary, Rosedale middle, Sardis secondary and Yorkson Creek middle and secondary.

The public can check out all the action at Centre Ice at 3600 Townline Rd. in west Abbotsford.

ATSS senior boys finish first The Abbotsford Traditional Secondary School Knights senior boys basketball team fought their way to the top of the heap in the Fraser Valley senior boys AA Tier 2 basketball league.

The Knights compiled a record of five wins and one loss in regular-season play, only losing to Burnsview in late January.

ATSS outscored the opposition 449-357 during the seven games, and opened the regular season with five straight wins.

ATSS is the lone Abbotsford school in Tier 2, posting wins against D. W. Poppy, Langley Fundamental, Surrey Christian, St. John Brebeuf, Sands and Garibaldi.

The Knights also went a combined 4-3 in exhibition and tournament play in December and January. Over the next week, ATSS has two crossover games against the Tier 1 eighth- and ninth-place teams to determine seeding for the Fraser Valley playoffs.

The Fraser Valley tournament combines both AA Tier 1 and 2 teams, and kicks off on Feb. 20.

A pair of W. J. Mouat Hawks football players are continuing their gridiron career at the post-secondary level.

Running back and linebacker Dion Pellerin is heading to Ontario and the Waterloo University Warriors, while quarterback Noah Dietrich is joining the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.

The Grade 12 duo were key parts of a Hawks team that qualified for the playoffs, but lost to Notre Dame at home to close out the season.

Pellerin had a busy off-season, helping Team BC defeat Team Alberta 18-12 in the annual ABC Bowl in Chilliwack on Dec. 12.

He was also named to the AAA East division all-star team, and earned the Kevin Chin memorial scholarship at the Subway Bowl awards dinner on Dec. 1.

Dietrich’s highlight from the season occurred during the Hawks’ 56-20 win over the Mt. Boucherie

Every new year causes me to pause. There always seems to be a lull. I take extra time to reflect on spiritual matters.

This first week of 2016, I focused on one question. In fact, I think it’s the most important spiritual question that needs to be pondered.

Before I get there, I would like to introduce you to a spiritual calculation I call 80-20. The 80 per cent stands for knowledge, the 20 per cent for faith experience.

I am convinced that when it comes to the evidence in favour of my faith in God, I have 80 per cent of the information in my favour. Included on that list are the complexity of the sciences, the logic of philosophy, the apologetics of reason (including the cosmological argument, the teleological argument, the moral argument), historical bibliology, and theological biblical interpretation.

In fact, no matter your degree, you will have plenty of evidence to argue a case for a creator or a case for the God of the Bible.

However, no one will be argued into faith.

That is not what faith is about. And that is where the 20 per cent comes in. It’s faith experience. It’s those intangible things which could be deemed subjectively irrelevant. However, in the eyes of someone with faith, it qualifies as a faith experience.

My question isn’t about either of those two categories, although I love to talk about them both. I want to talk about the line that separates them. It’s the place where knowledge discovers faith. And it’s the line where faith welcomes knowledge.

So, I would like to define that line with a question. And the question is this: Are you born again? I didn’t ask if you had enough knowledge to believe. I didn’t ask have you believed in Jesus. I didn’t ask to which church do you belong. I didn’t ask what are your spiritual beliefs or your theological preferences. Why? Because it could simply be an exchange of information, just more knowledge. Knowledge alone can’t take you across the line into the realm of faith. To connect reason and faith you need a transformational encounter. And in common, every-day Bible language, you need to be born again.

A transformation from spiritual death From A28

the day that you must be born again.

Simply put, this is what it means. The Bible teaches us that we are born spiritually dead. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a problem for those who seek to be spiritually alive.

However, when it does happen itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just like a physical birth. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s

real in the spiritual realms. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not just the result of a prayer, a club membership, or an agreement to a particular set of beliefs; there is an actual spiritual transformation from spiritual death to life.

This transformation is radically central to Christian belief. When it happens, a person is called a

child of God. He/she is identified as a new self, or a new creature.

This person has been transferred from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of light. A new identity is taken, even a new heavenly citizenship. Something amazing has happened.

When a person is born again, knowledge becomes more than

information. Information is connected to the source of knowledge, namely God, and it takes on a whole new purpose and meaning. When a person is born again, faith takes on a new look as it gains a hope, again namely God, as represented in the person of Jesus Christ.

The transformational experi-

ence is sourced by the Spirit of God, which in turn should change the attitudes and actions of that person.

Although I love knowledge, and although I love talking about faith matters, eventually I will be headed toward the question of the day and so I ask you: Are you born again?

Eventually, we pulled into John’s City Diner in Birmingham for a late dinner of some deep-fried goodness. Over dinner, we debated the next step: we could stay in Birmingham or push forward to Jackson, Mississippi. Staying in Alabama would make for a longer journey the next day.

We pushed on and when I shut her down at that chosen destination I had clocked 1,291 kilometres (807 miles).

Surprisingly, after over 12 hours behind the wheel, my back wasn’t aching as much as I had expected. The sport seats proved to be firm yet flexible enough to still be comfortable and keep me in place.

Even with the chassis 28 percent stiffer, the ride isn’t bone-jarring, not for me at least. Though, don’t expect it to take road imperfections gingerly. It is a performance vehicle after all so running a tight ship is mandatory. Besides, there aren’t 455 horses under the hood without reason. My voice had tired from singing at the top of my lungs and talking on the phone – I was driving alone, after all.

The desire to venture along this section of the program that spanned over the 48 contiguous states was purely personal. I’d never driven in this part of the United States – with the exception of Florida – and wanted to experience what it had to offer. The scenery wasn’t quite as epic as the sultry waves of Florida’s coastline, and all in all, it was quite barren, but there was still joy in the journey.

WALSH John “Sean”

Mom passed away on February 3, 2016 with grace and courage from her illness with cancer. She is mourned by her children Nicole and Colin (Deanna) and husband Louis. Mary is remembered by her parents Art and Elizabeth Orban and sister Elizabeth Cooper (Grant). Mary worked for the Abbotsford Police Department as the Executive Assistant to the Deputy Chief Constable of Administration.

A Celebration of Life on will be held on Sunday, February 14th at the Sandman Hotel 32720 Simon Ave., Abbotsford from 2:00 - 5:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers the family will be accepting donations for the Christine Morrison Hospice.

Mary requested that at her Celebration of Life there is no black to be worn.

You will be missed, we love you mom.

GOERTZ Rev. Lester M. After a long, courageous battle with cancers, and spending precious time with family at his side, our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Les Goertz, passed away peacefully at home February 2, 2016, aged 76. Born March 5, 1939 in Waldheim, SK, Les relocated as a young boy to the Fraser Valley with his family. In 1962, he married the love of his life, Vernagean Nelson in Vancouver, BC. They raised three children while living in various cities in BC and Washington State. An ordained minister, Les pastored for over 40 years at churches in Canada and the USA, counselled and mentored many individuals, conducted seminars in North America and overseas, established hospice programs at hospitals, and advised businesspeople and elected officials. He graduated from Bethany Bible College and earned a master’s degree in ministry from Trinity Western University. Les founded Church Evangelism Ministries and later authored and published ‘Not-Yet-Christian’, a book about the stages people go through in their journey of faith.

He had a great passion for people - he enjoyed spending time talking over a cup of hot chocolate or while ‘fitting puzzle’ or rooting for the Canucks. Les was especially proud of his grandchildren and loved to cheer them on at their events, rain or shine.

Predeceased by his parents, Jacob and Katherine (Berg) Goertz, and his brothers-in-law, Dave Bergstrom and Doug Nelson, Les is survived by his wife of over 53 years, Vernagean (Nelson) Goertz, daughter Christine (Tom) Nichols, son Mike (Kristen) Goertz, daughter Camille (Phil) Goddard, grandchildren Jacob, Olivia, Grace, Kristen, Heidi, Jillian, and great-granddaughter Airlyn. Also survived by sister Elma Bergstrom, brothers Cliff (Norma) Goertz and Ray (Denise) Goertz, sisters-in-law Cheryl Nelson, Cathy (Dennis) Stromme, Dianne (Rod) Neufeld, Janet Sabados, and brothers-in-law Curt (Patrice) Nelson and Brad (Julie) Nelson, aunts Annie Goertz, Alma Goertz and Leona Goertz, uncles Ed Goertz and Herman Berg, numerous nieces and nephews, a large extended family, and a far reaching network of people who came into contact with Les over the years and who loved him - he loved them back dearly. Many thanks to the doctors and healthcare professionals who supported Les over the years, especially this past month. We take comfort in knowing that his journey in eternity continues and that he is rejoicing with those who have gone on before. Please join us in celebrating his life. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, February 13, 1:00 pm, at Abbotsford Pentecostal Assembly (south bldg.), 3145 Gladwin Road, Abbotsford, BC, followed by a reception at Cedar Brook Baptist Church (north bldg. at same address). John “Sean” Walsh age 93 passed away peacefully at Lions Gate Hospice on February 4, 2016.

Born in Cork, Ireland, Sean served as a radio officer with the merchant navy during World War Two, and emigrated to Canada with his wife Eileen in 1949. Sean worked many years with BC Tel in Kamloops, Princeton and Abbotsford. Sean is the eldest of 16, and is survived by twelve of his brothers and sisters, and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives in both Ireland and North America. Sean was predeceased by his wife Eileen, long time partner Irene Huhn, and his eldest son Barry (Terry).

Survived by children Kathryn Munsie, Brian (Ellen), Patricia, and Robert (Jae), Grandchildren Kevin, Jennifer and Jeff Munsie, and Eileen and James, Great grandchildren Emily, Nolan and Fern.

Sean will forever be remembered for his gentle nature and zest for life. A Funeral Mass was held at 11am on February 9th at St. Anthony’s Parish in West Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation. www.hollyburnfunerals.com

Lucille “Lucy” late of Abbotsford, BC, left us peacefully in her sleep on February 8, 2016 at the age of 84 at Menno Home. She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Donovan; daughter, Gail (Daryl) Phillips, 2 sons, Brian (Susanne), and Doug (Susan); 9 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and 1 sister, Laurette (Lorne) Ferby. She was predeceased by her son, Darrin; 5 sisters, and 6 brothers. Lucy loved nature and being by the water. Camping and RVing were her life. She had a great sense of humour and was quick witted. Elizabeth (Betty) Betty, a longtime resident of Abbotsford, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 9, 2016 with her children at her side. Betty will be lovingly remembered by her children, Jonni Lee Benson and Pamela (Robert) Hubley of Abbotsford, Carla (Daryl) Collins of Kelowna, Cathy Benson-Jestin (Ryan Jestin) and Steve Benson of Calgary, AB; 7 grandchildren, Tony (Allie), Ashley, Shayley (Dan), Richelle, JJ, Shelby, and Adrian; brothers and sisters-inlaw, Doug (Leona), Ray (Anthea), Joy, Vera, Pat, Garth (Pat); also nieces and nephews. Elizabeth’s passions in life were her children and grandchildren, travel, trying new adventures, puzzles and for some unfathomable reason, frogs. KENNARD Carolyn Layne December 4, 1948 ~ February 4, 2016 Carolyn was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to Peter & Florence Giesbrecht who predeceased her.

She is survived by husband, David Keith, her son Joshua (Julia) and a grandson, Kye Donald who truly was the apple of her eye, as was Josh. She loved her family dearly.

She is also survived by a younger sister Diane (Kirk). She had an older brother Ron who predeceased her in Saskatoon. Carolyn’s relationship with her sister was a thing to be cherished by Carolyn. They shared stories and life happenings throughout their lives.

Carolyn attended school in Dundern, SK where the family resided. In her life there were girlfriends that she met and developed close relationships with, that also survived. They were and are very precious to Carolyn. There was Susan Burlett, Norma Kehn, Crystal Nola, Nola Perkin and Lynn Oliver. In later times there was another one to add to the clan - Michelle Howell (USA). These girls had relationships with Carolyn that are so special. In her years working in Regina, she met and also became friends with Gail Bass (Gary). The stories they could tell....... should someone want to listen. And in Saskatoon, after we retired there from Revelstoke, BC she met Patty Webster (John). Their Saturday morning excursions were legendary.

Carolyn did so many things that were positive. She was an accountant by trade, and as such she rose to the position as the head of finance for a huge steel company in Regina, namely IPSCO. In 1978, she became the proud mother of Josh and he was her whole life. Then we met and married and she changed by life and all for the better. I was employed with Parks Canada and we settled in Revelstoke, BC where we stayed until 1996.

Carolyn developed breast cancer and that was the start of a twenty-one year battle with the disease. She was a warrior from the onset of that disease until her passing. We settled in Saskatoon after my retirement and Carolyn found employment with the Smith family, namely Irma and Bill, with son Grant and daughter Cheryl. She started in the catering side of their business and when they went into the hotel business, they took Carolyn with them to handle the pay department. What a job she did there.

The owners and employees appreciate Carolyn to this day. On the birth of our grandson Kye, she wanted to be there for him and she was, two days per week throughout his first years. The places she went with the “Kye Man” will live in our hearts and minds for as long as we live. She lit up any room she was in with her inspiration and she was a caring and loving person. But she was not finished as a far as work was concerned. She was president of our Strata Corporation and did as best she could for all of our residents. But, in the end, she developed lung cancer and suffered other setbacks with her health, until it overcame her.

She never gave up and fought right to the end. SHE WILL BE SADLY MISSED. Memorial Service, on February 20th at the reception room at 2901 Trafalgar St., Abbotsford, BC from 1 - 4 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name to Salvation Army.
