Deer have been moved

Deer in Kimberley and Invermere have been translocated; Cranbrook next week, Elkford follows C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor

The East Kootenay Deer Translocation Trial has completed removal of deer in Kimberley last week and in Invermere as of Wednesday, this week. Next week, deer will be removed from Cranbrook and the Elkford. Liz White of the Animal Alliance, a group which provided some funding for the study, was in Kimberley last week observing the process and says overall it was successful and professionally done. “Over three days, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, last week, 20 deer were removed from Kimberley, which is what the permit allowed,” White said. “One deer died at capture. They think it regurgitated food and it got caught in the trachea. She was unconscious the whole time. “But generally speaking, it was done very professionally. Three vets were part of it. I watched the darting. It was pretty smooth. Most of the deer didn’t run away after darting, just walked. It took about five minutes to unconsciousness. Immediately upon being down, the vets bound their legs and covered and their faces, and they were moved to a transport vehicle. Then they were given a reversal drug and a valium-type drug to keep them calm, then were driven down to the relocation site. “It was really well done.”

SPCA tackles local stray cat population TRE VOR CR AWLEY

Cranbrook has a cat problem. “Cat problem” may be a bit extreme, but the city has one of the highest cat populations per capita in the province, according to Brenna Baker, the manager of the B.C. SPCA East Kootenay branch. With that in mind, Baker approached the city at a council meeting on Monday night to help promote a cat spay and neuter program. See DEER, page 4 Last June, the East Koo-

tenay SPCA branch received a $83,000 PetSmart grant and has only spent $20,000 to date. Baker is hoping to give the funding a little more profile, which allows the SPCA to spay and neuter stray cats as well as cats that the public bring in who may not be able to afford the procedure. For low-income people who want to spay and neuter their cat, they can bring it in to the SPCA and staff will make an appointment at a local veterinarian and

give them a voucher. The SPCA asks for a $40 donation, however, that can be waived if it’s unaffordable to the cat owner. “So, we know that low-income residents are half as likely to spay and neuter their animals with affordability, accessibility and attitude ranking the highest barriers to getting their animals spayedOur andMaximum Refund Guarantee* ensures you get all the entitled to. neutered and this is whydeductions and credits you’re Our Maximum Refund Guara we’re launching this funddeductions today. and credits y Speak to an H&R Block Taxthe Professional TOWNSMAN FILE PHOTO ing,” said Baker.
