Billy Barker Casino and Hotel provides first class showroom to the community

Billy Barker Casino and Hotel is a cornerstone place in Quesnel, but one thing that people may not know is that it offers a 120 seat banquet facility showroom as well.

Owner of Billy Barker Casino and Hotel, Jade Kotzer says people don’t know how affordable the showroom is.

“People know there’s a room down there, but people don’t know how affordable and convenient it is to hold anything from a wedding to a conference, or a

retirement party,” Kotzer said.

She says they provide everything from tables, chairs, linens, set up and clean up and the bartend-

er as well, which no other hall can match. She adds that once you spend $600 on food or beverages that there is no charge for the room. Kotzer says the only

thing that you have to do is get the catering done by them.

“I just wanted to show how much easier it is to use our space and it’s probably cheaper too because you don’t have to pay for the rental,” Kotzer said.

“You just have to get it catered by us, which is probably the same price of any outside catering you would have to get.”

Chemo RV’s business is helping others realize their dreams

Quesnel’s Chemo RV Sales and Service had a very strong 2015 and owner Jason Bell is confident in the Quesnel market.

Chemo RV first set up business in Williams Lake in 1976 and opened Quesnel Chemo RV in 1989. Always a family-run business, Jason took over the ownership in 2009.

When asked why Quesnel has remained a strong market, Jason sited several factors including offering the right products, having the right staff, the company’s long-standing excellent reputation and the obvious economic factors.

“Quesnel’s forest industry is doing well and that speaks well for the RV market,” he said. “And it looks like it will remain so for the foreseeable future.”

He added they also look at other businesses when assessing the market, what sort of new businesses come to town or current businesses looking at expansions and renovations.

However, Chemo RV looks at a broader market as well.

Their market extends north of Quesnel to Prince George and point north of that and also east to Kamloops and even Canada-wide.

“Not all our business is based in the two communities, we look at our market as covering B.C. and Canada.”

Drive-by business is also a key element for Chemo RV. “Everyone driving either north or south must pass by our businesses and especially in the summertime.”

Based on the strength and stability of the Quesnel market, Chemo RV is in the planning stages of a 15,000 sq.ft. new building on the Quesnel site.

Planned for 2017, they will be watching the market variations closely.

Currently, Quesnel Chemo RV has two sales staff, one general manager, two journeymen technicians, one parts manager and one service manager along with a two-person lot crew. With the new building, staff numbers will increase, there will be an indoor showroom and the parts department will be much larger.

Jason spent two years managing the family’s Quesnel operation and observed this market is very consistent.

“Quesnel is also an affordable place to live and with close proximity to Prince George and its international airport and the fabulous recreational possibilities” “Quesnel also boasts several long-time businesses that help stabilize the business community.”

“South of Quesnel is ripe for development,” he said.

The first is the laundromat and dry cleaners on McLean Street near the intersection of St. Laurent Avenue. This facility has served the community for many years. BBBSQ is an organization worth supporting

Big Brothers, Big Sister of Quesnel (BBBSQ) quietly goes about its business. In 2015 they served 183 children and youth across five different programs. These programs are making a profound difference in the lives of these children thanks to the many volunteer mentors who give of their time and commit to making a difference.

BBBSQ’s five programs include the cornerstone program, traditional Big Brother Big Sister, one-on-one mentoring program; adult and teen inschool mentoring program; Go Girls and Game On afterschool programs; the Big Bunch program for children and families not yet matched; and finally Kids in Motion, a pilot program in 2015 which they hope will be offered again this year.

The Boston Consulting Group study quantified the return on investment of the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. The study was designed to audit the financial return to society from BBBS and it found that every dollar invested generates on average $18 is returned to society.

The research compared the life outcomes of 500 former Littles with a control group of individuals from identical family and economic backgrounds. The study determined that, over their working lives, the former Littles will earn on average $315,000 more than those in the control group. Remarkably, the social return on investment for the most economically disadvantaged participants in

BBBS mentoring programs is even greater – generating an average of $23 in economic value for each dollar invested.

With such overwhelmingly positive statistics regarding the value of BBBS programs, donors can be confident their support is paying dividends to the community and the world at large.

Across the board, Littles are showing they generally have done better, first in workplace achievements, employment, earnings and leadership; also in being community minded.

BBBSQ holds three fundraisers to pay expenses and help with the costs of activities across their five programs: the WestJet raffle, Bowl for Kids Sake in April and Golf for Kids Sake in September.

“All funds raised stay in Quesnel and every dollar raised helps match a child with a mentor,” Executive Director Michelle Riley said.

“We are always humbled by the exceedingly generous community. They volunteer, donate liberally, form partnerships with us and even our MLA Coralee Oakes shows her support in so many ways.”

Although Quesnel is a relatively small community, it affords lots of opportunity for activities for BBBSQ children and their mentors.

The average investment required to mentor a Little Brother or Little Sister is $5,059 so give generously to a rewarding organization.

Forest Power Sports is now delivering all motorsports enthusiasts a product right here in Quesnel.

Forest Power Sports, which runs out of Prince George has been operating for 45 years and throughout that span has gone through three ownership changes. Dealer Principal, Norm Brown says “Quesnel people are very loyal to their local dealers,” Brown said.

“They don’t want to have to drive or have their stuff shipped for Prince George and we felt that the best way to service the customers of Quesnel and area was to put a location here.”

He says due to the facet Quesnel and Prince George are so close it allows them to utilize both stores to fit customers needs.

“What we want the com-

munity to know is that we have a great supply of parts and accessories, as well we can draw from our Prince George store ever day all the time,” Brown said.

“You’re not just being able to shop from the Quesnel store in that we can get it from the Prince George store overnight or faster.”

Brown says there isn’t much discrepancies between the season in the

amount of customers that come to the stores.

“Having a full line of ATV’s side x sides and snowmobiles there isn’t much of a lag in the seasons. We actually transition fairly smoothly from winter to summer. The Quesnel store does have the benefits of the Prince George location being a KTM dealer and parts can be sent down for the KTM riders. We also have the

Evinrude Outboards which makes it available for the Quesnel people that way too,” Brown said.

Forest Power Sports is one of the longest running motorsports facilities in Northern B.C. and also the winners of the Bombardier’s Ski-Doo Dealer of the Year award for Central and Western Canada for 2012 and the winners of the PAC Sales of the Year award in 2010.

Brown says all customers are welcome to come and check the products they offer.

“I encourage all riders to come by and take a look,” Brown said.

“We’ve also done work with the Wells Snowmobile Club helping them out with units and their snow trail grooming. We welcome everyone through the doors.”

The magic of small communities is shop local PMT Chartered Professional Accountants LLP opened its doors in Quesnel in January 2013 but the company has a history of offering full accounting services in the Cariboo since the early 1960s.

The company is a partnership with offices in Quesnel, owned by Debbie Wiens; in Williams Lake, owned by Jay Cheek; and in 100 Mile House, owned by Keith Greenhalgh.

“Some of the original partners are still working part time in the firm,” Debbie said.

She first came to Quesnel in 1990 and worked for Rigsby, Lee, Bar as an accounting student. The partners convinced her to stay and she completed her designation through them.

Debbie, together with PMT, purchased R.E. Rassmussen’s practice in December 2012.

“Accountants are fairly stable and that’s important to building relationships with clients,” she said.

“Clients are very loyal and need an accountant who they trust implicitly. They need to be able to trust their accountant with their business.”

What first drew her to the profession was a love of numbers and she likes the variety of work and the people she’s met along with all the challenges the job creates.

“Especially at tax time – it’s crazy,” she said with a smile.

Although she knew no one when she first arrived, Debbie said she soon found out Quesnel was a warm and welcoming community.

“It has a very friendly atmosphere and businesses sup-

port this town and its charities. I also like the way you can get to know people.”

Debbie has immersed herself in the community, is the current president of Quesnel Rotary and sits on the Community Futures board and helps out with various community events and projects.

“I believe in giving back to the community that gives me so much,” Debbie said.

So many business opportunities

What’s really going on with business in Quesnel?

The Quesnel Business Walks program aims to answer that question.

Organized by the City of Quesnel’s Economic Development team, and involving the participation of the Quesnel & District Chamber of Commerce, Community Futures North Cariboo, South Quesnel Business Association, Quesnel Downtown Association, Cariboo Regional District staff, and members of Council, the Business Walks offer an opportunity to take the pulse of business through short interviews.

The 2015 results are impressive. 84 per cent of businesses were positive about the current business climate.

The majority of business owners reported that business was good or increas-

ing, with the second most common response, “fair and steady.” This was an improvement over the results in 2014.

But why Quesnel? Business owners were also asked why they started or purchased their business in Quesnel.

The most common response was, “Quesnel is home!” This was often followed by supporting reasons of the lifestyle Quesnel offers, the affordability of property, and the supportive community spirit. Many business owners saw a market opening and jumped at it.

Business owners were given the opportunity to note their concerns, most commonly referring to rumours surrounding the local economy, and to offer suggestions for initiatives that would support business in Quesnel

Business owners would like to see an increased and improved effort in marketing the community, something the City of Quesnel is currently working towards.

There will be upcoming opportunity for community involvement in this initiative, and residents and business owners are encouraged to pay close attention to the City’s website and Facebook page in the coming weeks.

Many business owners inquired about how they might take on work related to the construction of the new arena.

An email was quickly sent out to all constructionrelated businesses on the economic development mailing list with more information.

Businesses are encouraged to add themselves to this mailing list to be

made aware of future opportunities, by emailing the Economic Development Officer, Amy Reid at areid@quesnel.ca.

Also send an email if you would like your business to be included in the 2016 Business Walks, this fall.

With the results of the Business Walks reported back to all of the participating organizations, these findings can be used in better planning to ensure resources are allocated to best support the business community.

Quesnel and District Chamber of Commerce has been the voice of business in Quesnel since 1910, initially as the Quesnel Board of Trade and then, in 1968, by the name under which we currently operate.

Design Flooring believes in Quesnel

Like the phoenix rising from the ashes, Design Flooring is brighter, newer, a beautifully finished version of its former self. However, all of the attributes which created the successful business are still valued and practiced – great service and great products.

The day after the devastating fire that destroyed the business on Jan. 7, 2014, Jeff was in meetings with his staff.

Sales reps were calling him and he said whatever we’ve ordered in the last two weeks send it to me again.

By the following Monday he was open for business in a temporary location.

So many people in the community including businesses stepped up and helped this family get back on their feet.

“We only lost one customer through the transition and that was because they didn’t think we’d be back in business that fast,” he said.

For 36 years, Design Flooring has been doing business in Quesnel. Opened by his parents, Jeff became an owner nine years ago.

“This is a family business with our family and our employees’ families working here.”

Jeff credits their stellar reputation and good quality work for their continuous growth.

“We’re not perfect, but if we screw up we fix it.”

The new showroom carries all flooring types. Jeff said they at one time carried cabinetry and other items for the home, however they are now focusing on flooring.

“We can still supply other aspects of the your home build,” he said.

“We still supply custom area rungs as well.”

Most of the carpet sold at Design Flooring is Canadian made by Beaulieu, which is as Canadian as you can get. With all their carpeting, Design Flooring guarantees satisfaction.

“If you don’t like it, we replace it, the only cost to the customer is labour,” Jeff said.

Design Flooring is a huge community supporter and Jeff said people would be surprised at the number of sponsorships they provide to sports teams, players, race cars and other community events and projects.

“I grew up in this town and was sponsored as a kid and now I’m giving back.”

As for why he does business in Quesnel, he says he’s travelled a lot and hasn’t found anywhere better than Quesnel.

“We have a good climate, good infrastructure and its affordable,” he said.

“You’ve got to get out and get active and in Quesnel you can afford the toys to enjoy life. I’m not going anywhere, we have it all here including a great ski hill. Troll is a gem.”

Design Flooring value their employees.

He is please to say many of his staff have been with the company a long time, some with more than 30 years.

Karin’s, a commitment to quality

Looking back on sixteen years in the health food business, Lori Freeman smiles softly and praises her clients and staff.

“We take pride in this,” she said, noting a commitment to continued education.

“Knowing we’re helping people… it’s really exciting and rewarding.”

Since 1972 Karin’s Deli and Health Foods has helped guide residents in their nutritional journey. Undergoing massive renovations two years ago, Karin’s doubled its square footage.

And with good reason – the warm, inviting space, is home to a host of high-quality products and services.

Located at the far wall sits a deli case, with specially imported cheese and high quality European meats.

“It speaks for itself,” Freeman said.

A full selection of gifts is nestled in a bright corner, showcasing genuine stone jewelry, leather purses, salt lamps and aromatherapy diffusers – to name a few.

And then there’s the heart of the company – the full line of high-end, certified organic health foods and

supplements.

“You see so much more these days of people taking an active role in their health,” Freeman said, noting interest in immune supports, daily supplements, and even make-up and cleansers.

“Then there’s the nutritional end,” she said,

highlighting the company belongs to the Canadian Health Association.

From nuts, grains, flours and dried fruits – customers can be assured the product they purchase is of the highest quality.

“We know what’s in our products,” Freeman said.

“We stand by them.”

AC&D Insurance providing excellent insurance options AC&D Insurance is a dedicated business that allows people in the community to attain insurance and still have a personal connection with the Agency.

“You get to know your customer as friends and people instead of just another number,” Sandra Lewis, Manager of the Quesnel branch.

The agency started out as Godfrey-Farrant Insurance then was bought out in about 1976 by Archibald Clarke and Defieux and then changed the name in 2008 to AC&D Insurance.

We are part of a large group of 80 agencies who are under the InsureBC Group.

Each agency is either 50-100 per cent owned by one individual. This gives us the buying power with our companies.

Lewis said they offer a Safe Ride Home program to the community, which has been well received.

“One of the things we do is that we often sponsor a Safe Ride Home,” Lewis said.

“What we do is we provide the Safe Ride Home where it’s from that event to home and then we pay the taxi the next day. I created that when I got here because I saw a real need for organizations not to be responsible for

letting people drive home drunk. It encourages people to not take the chance and take a taxi and AC&D Insurance will pay for that.”

She says it’s all about the community and utilizing local people.

“It’s all about community and giving back to the community,” Lewis said.

“If we want people to do business with us we also have to do business with them. I made it mandatory that our insurance companies only use local people when it comes to restoration or rebuild.”

Lewis also said that when Savalas Steakhouse burned down a few years ago there was damage to their building, which resulted in a $400,000 claim. She says that insurance companies want to bring in people that want to do the work for less, but she was passionate about getting local people.

“I was very adamant in saying no,” Lewis said.

“If I want people to do business with me here we have to do business in the community. Our dollars do not leave this community.”

She says the staff at the office are dedicated to the community. An example of that was Christmas when they donated 30 gifts to Season’s House instead of exchanging gifts with each other.

“Our search for brands new to the marketplace is ongoing,” Vera said.

The Outlaw also has the largest selection of caps and hats in Quesnel.

Both Vera and Carol are great supporters in the community. As their shop is located in the heart of Quesnel, they are enthusiastic members of the Quesnel Downtown Association (QDA) as well as support the continual development of the downtown core.

“We’re proudly local and support many non-profit and community events and fundraisers such as schools, sports teams and other charities,” Vera said.

Carol added downtown is a great place to do business.

“There’s such a variety of independent businesses which create unique shopping experiences,” she said.

Vera added they strive to create a vibrant walkable, enjoyable atmosphere for local residents and visitors alike.

“The QDA celebrates 25 years in 2016, of providing a safe, friendly, unique place to do business,” she added Both Vera and Carol agreed much of their business success can be attributed to their outstanding staff.

The Outlaw’s 3,000 sq.ft. facility is managed by well-trained, long-time employees who have grown with the business and now are responsible for selecting merchandise for the store.

“We’re extremely proud of our staff,” Carol said.

“So feel free to tell them what you’d like to see on our racks.”
