AN EXCITED Peter de la Mothe from Penticton was the first Zone 2 (Thompson-Okanagan) athlete to carry the 2016 BC Winter Games torch into the South Okanagan Events Centre Thursday evening as the 2016 BC Winter Games get underway in Penticton. The SOEC event is just the first in four days of fun and competition for the young athletes.

The seeds of friendship among athletes at the Penticton 2016 BC Winter Games were planted before the opening ceremony kicked off. Shivani Badahur of the Fraser Vally zone had fun meeting people in the waiting area in the Okanagan Hockey School Training Centre. “The energy is great,” said Bada-

hur, a speed skater, competing in her second BC Winter Games. “I have been taking pictures with random people and they have been good. There is lots of positive energy.” Athletes were taking group photos as they waited and joked amongst themselves. Badahur’s teammate Jane Green said all the athletes looked excited. “I know I am,” said Green. “It’s cool to see all the little guys.”

Lauren Koper, an alpine skier from the Kootenay zone, said being in the waiting area was a great experience. She enjoyed being around so many people, something she isn’t used to. She was nervous entering with the large crowd. Migs Mercado, a judo athlete representing the Fraser River zone loved the first day. “It’s been a really fun atmosphere,” said Mercado. “It’s a really cool thing.

It makes me appreciate all the support for the athletes. Makes me appreciate what we have.” Mercado added the atmosphere possesses a nervousness and excitement. As they watched Beamer Wigley perform, rocking to his sound, they were surrounded by a large crowd in the South Okanagan Events Centre. Teaming up to entertain with Wigley were the Okangan Dance Studio

and Balance School of Arts. The free tickets available were picked up quickly. BC Winter Games president Bill Bidlake said there is an excitement for the Games and everything surrounding it. He even praised Mother Nature. “The weather is going to be absolutely gorgeous for them,” said Bidlake. “Apex is wonderful too. Have ideal conditions here as well.”
