tially reduce the costs involved with the project.

“Unless we look at all the available options, we have breached our fiduciary duty and have not done our due diligence,” Jensen said in explaining his motion.

“This is a respectful approach

that says we want to keep this affordable for all communities.”

An amendment to the motion, put forward by Saanich Coun.

Ticks, those tiny little creatures that many pet owners and outdoor enthusiasts dread, are the main focus of one Ontario resident’s research, as he fights to discover more about Lyme disease.

It’s a subject that really hits home for scientist John Scott.

“I contracted Lyme disease 30 years ago.

Both my wife and I have it,” he said. “A lot of people are not aware of it … In the case of my wife and I, it’s destroyed our lives.”

Scott, who lives in Fergus, Ont., has published 25 peer-reviewed articles on the topic with the help of groups from across the country. Aiding in his research, is Christina Carrieres, senior wildlife rehabilitator at the BC SPCA’s Wild ARC in Metchosin.

“My primary goal right from day one was to figure out what was going on across Canada in terms of Lyme disease,” he said.

“One thing led to another and I’ve been (receiving) quite a few ticks from birds and mammals.”

Scott recently co-authored a scientific article that focused on ticks collected from gallinaceous birds (domestic poultry and game) on the southeastern portion of Vancouver Island. Included in that research, a tick collected by Carrieres testing positive.

“We started getting involved in the project in 2012,” she said. Staff at the Metchosin facility have collected 50 specimens from

16 different species of animals for several of Scott’s research projects.

Of six ticks focused on in the most recently published article, one was collected in Metchosin and another in Highlands. The third local tick, the only one to test positive for Lyme disease, was collected in Saanich from an orphaned baby California quail.

The other three were collected in Courtenay, Royston and Ladysmith.

“Lyme disease is certainly a disease more and more people are worried about,” Carrieres said. “It’s a disease that can do a lot of damage.”

But she doesn’t want to alarm local residents. “It is present, but there are ways of protecting ourselves,” she said.

For those who are out in the wild, Scott suggests a full body tick check upon return and “anyone handling game birds should have protective gear.”

As ticks can carry more than just Lyme disease, anyone bitten by one should get an antibiotic treatment right away. Otherwise, Scott said, you’re playing “Russian roulette” with your health. Since 2012, two of the 50 specimens collected by the Wild ARC have tested positive for the disease. “It’s really hard to draw conclusions on small numbers, but we’ve seen an increase.”

Some of that could be due to the local climate, she added, noting that milder winters don’t kill off as many ticks as the harsher climate in other areas. While deer are frequently connected to discussions around Lyme disease, they are not the main species from which ticks are being collected. “Birds are quite efficient at spreading it,” Carrieres said, noting that’s not only migratory

birds, but such non-migratory species as quail.

The conversion from a youth custody centre to a homeless haven is in full swing.

About 50 people, many of them from the tent city at the court building in downtown Victoria, have started to arrive in small numbers each day at the former youth custody centre on Talcott Road in View Royal.

The new tenants at Choices Transitional Home will have the option of staying in new tents erected on the grounds or inside the facility, which opened in 2002

but was closed by the provincial government as a cost-cutting measure in 2015.

A staff of about 34 people that includes kitchen staff, drivers, security and outreach workers will work there, said Grant McKenzie, director of communications for Our Place, which oversees the operation. “People can stay inside or outside, and we are supplying the tents and sleeping gear,” McKenzie said. “People will get three meals a day and have access to hot showers, laundry and the recreation room. We also hope to get people involved in workshop activities.”

Speed limit change proposed for Leigh Road

City of Langford staff are drafting an amendment to a bylaw that would impose a 40 km/h speed limit on Leigh Road from Costin Avenue, south of Goldstream Avenue, throughout the intersection and to the ambulance station north of Goldstream Avenue.

Council also directed staff last week to draft another amendment to remove the 30 km/h speed zone on McCallum Road, from Florence Lake Road to 1010 McCallum Rd. Once drafted, the proposed changes will be considered by council.

West Shore Parkway fencing contract awarded

Black chain-link fencing will be installed along the length of the play park at Westhills Park to maintain a safe environment once construction begins on Sector 5 of the West Shore Parkway project.

The fencing is expected to be put up within the next three weeks, before the bulk of work begins on the adjacent road project, south of Langford Parkway to the creek crossing.

Langford council approved awarding the fencing contract to Protex Fence Services, who bid $7,700 for the job, $1,250 lower than the other bid received. The project will be funded from the West Shore Parkway construction project fund.

The Victoria Conservatory of Music prepares to open its doors to a first ever satellite location with a month of free music lessons leading into their expansion into the West Shore for their first ever satellite location.

“With the West Shore growing as quickly as it is... and being home to such a large number of families and young children, we felt it would be a wonderful community to present our work,” said VCM CEO Jane ButlerMcGregor. “We feel that location we are at where we join the Y and library it becomes a wonderful family destination for everyone.”

Last month Langford council members decided not to implement a notification procedure for liquor license applications, allowing the B.C. Liquor Licensing Branch to instead put a procedure in place.

So with government funding pouring in to open more temporary or transitional housing to get people off the streets we can’t help but wonder why this funding wasn’t available earlier - perhaps the beginning of the winter season.

We also have to question why this money is available for temporary solutions and didn’t go towards addressing the root causes of homelessness.

We suspect someone who devotes their time to getting people off the streets would agree with us when we say there isn’t enough funding for the programs aimed at preventing people from ending up there, whether it is from drug use, mental illness, abuse or a variety of other causes.

Yes, there are some people living on the street just because they want to. But a far greater number are there because they have no other choice.

We can’t keep using these Band-Aid fixes and expect them to be the end all to the systemic problems that create homelessness in the first place.

It’ll be interesting to see what unfolds in the aftermath of yesterday’s deadline and whether more funding will be made available to keep those facilities operating after their six-month operation timeline comes to an end.

Will we see another tent city taking shape again next fall or will we even have to wait that long before campers set up shop in a new location? Temporary solutions won’t fix long term problems.

A hearty hello from a born storyteller Today is my birthday. Let the fanfare begin.

I’m just kidding, I’m not one for a bunch of hoopla and attention.

But I figured today would be a good day – albeit long overdue – to officially introduce myself, especially for those I may not have had the pleasure of meeting just yet, but who may take the time to read some of my words every week.

Having been a West Shore resident for a little more than two years, I’m starting to get a handle on what makes other residents tick and some of the issues that really hit home.

I grew up playing hockey, so I have spent my fair share of time inside West Shore arenas.

I’m proud to say my experience of the area has certainly grown past those facilities, although The Q Centre will always hold a special place in my heart.

I have fallen in love with all the West Shore has to offer and not just in terms of a clean sheet of ice.

Before moving to the West Shore, I spent four years living in Toronto, getting my bachelor’s degree in journalism from Ryerson University and graduating with honours. While there I worked for a number of publications, including Chatelaine magazine.

Although, it’s nice to get a little snow once in a while, Toronto wasn’t for me in the long run, so I packed up my things and headed back to the Island.

I bounced around a little on my return, trying my hand at a few different things while desperately trying to get back into the journalism industry.

At the time I was commuting to North Saanich for work, so I know the pain many of you feel, while sitting in the Colwood crawl every morning.

I can’t say I miss it now that my commute is about 10 minutes into the Gazette’s Langford office.

I’ve been working here for the past eight months, but many of you may not know I got my start with Black Press at the Peninsula News Review in Sidney when I was 14, working as a student reporter one summer.

Just like back then, I’m sure a few of you are wondering how the heck to say my last name when you see my byline in the paper. It’s pro-

nounced ING-quest – yes, it’s spelt with a ‘qv’ instead of a ‘qu’ – and it’s Swedish.

That heritage has played a large role in my life. It has also inspired a travel bug that was triggered by trips to Europe as a child and has grown into a list of 21 countries visited, with more planned for next year.

While I have been attacked by a macaw parrot in Costa Rica, hiked a portion of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru, and played drums with children in South Sudan, I find that need to travel is never fully satisfied.

I believe that need is also what led me into a career as a journalist.

When I travel, I love soaking up the culture, trying new experiences and most importantly, hearing people’s stories.

Last year I was on a train from Edinburgh to London, when a man across the aisle struck up a conversation after noticing a maple leaf on my shirt.

Long story short, the man had come to Canada as a young boy with his family after his father served in the Second World War. The man, his hair turned grey with time, lived in a few places before landing in Victoria, where he remembered living at 1010 Foul Bay Rd. Yes, he still remembers the address to this day.

It’s those kinds of stories I want to share and it’s your stories that I want to write. I look forward to getting to know you and other West Shore residents better in the years to come.

LETTERS Poo problems not limited just to Langford’s trails Re: Much ado about poo (Gazette, Feb. 17) It infuriates me that the Sooke School District ends up dealing with a problem I believe is initiated by the prodevelopment policies of Langford.

Dog owners take their pets to run in school grounds because school grounds are typically the nearest open spaces to their homes - some of that being high density condo living.

The City of Langford may be patting itself on the proverbial back for creating Danbrook (dog) Park and the Langford Lake dog park. Almost half of Danbrook Park was created into a parking lot while the Langford Lake dog owners get to share a tiny strip of shore front with a boat launch.

Who really gets the priority there? Sorry Fido, wait on that

stick while the carbon emitting truck backs their boat into the water. Turtles sun themselves in the summer on a log half submerged next to this dock.

Did anyone ask them if they wanted disturbance by dogs or boats?

I moved to Langford for the reasons many did: lower cost of living and closer access to green spaces. I have watched my neighbourhood forests and green spaces turn into high-density housing for eight years. The token parks and green spaces left behind by the developers are a joke.

Urban trees are an essential multi-functional resource, providing a vast array of benefits for local people, urban communities, and the cityscape.

These include improved physical health and mental wellbeing, pollution absorption, flood protection, and wildlife

habitat. Urban trees, parks and open spaces provide many city dwellers with their only recreational space, promoting community cohesion, contact with nature and creating sensory outdoor learning resources.

The newspaper article threatens citizens that the bag dispensers may be taken away if we keep throwing full poopy bags into the bushes. I agree, take them away. Put the money instead into protecting more green spaces while we still have a few trails. People need to be more responsible anyway.

Really, if you are going to bother picking up poop, carry the bag out with you. If we wait long enough, stray poop bags chucked into the bushes and trees won’t be a problem.

There wont be any more trees.

Letter number two, about poo Re: Much ado about poo (Gazette, Feb. 17) Tonight I came home from a walk to the grocery store and for the third time this week I tracked the deposits of the local pets who defecate in front of my home and along the street I reside on, into my home.

There is a constant parade of neighbours who use our road as a dumping ground for their pets relief.

I’m not saying that everyone who walks their pets are irresponsible because I have on occasion seen owners pick

up after their pets, some even drop their bags into garbage cans while a good majority of them toss it behind a bush along the road or hang them proudly from small trees and bushes along the way.

I once counted over half a dozen bags behind the mailbox at the end of my road. We have no sidewalks and only a few streetlights so when the sun goes down the parade begins.

I am a smoker and I sit on my porch to have a smoke, so I see what and who comes and goes at all times of the day.

I was going to send in my lit-

tle rant on our local pet owner problems when a car pulled up in front of my home. I noticed that the passenger door was ajar, after watching for a bit the passenger got out and called to his pet which was relieving itself in my front yard. He quickly picked up his pet and they drove off.

I couldn’t believe my eyes, guess it was too cold and rainy for them to walk their pet, but I do suppose a drive around the neighbourhood could reveal a few good spots to let out a pet.

Yes even more ado about poo Re: Much ado about poo (Gazette, Feb. 17) My wife and I recently bought a home on Peatt Road near Goldstream this month.

I have a rescued dog from Mexico and we walk several times per day.

The city has done a wonderful job at providing bags and parks for the pooches in the neighbourhood.

However, Peatt road is disgusting with all the dog poo, especially in front

of the daycare centre.

The city needs a way of reporting and fining dog owners who are not responsible for their pets.

If people are walking their dogs and don’t have bags, they should at least receive a warming.

I hope this problem is resolved soon, and thanks again for bringing it up.

“It provides another opportunity within a broader constellation of testing services for people to access testing in a way that feels more suitable, relevant and comfortable for them.”

Traditionally, patients must go to a doctor, walkin clinic or a sexually-transmitted infection clinic to get tested for such infections.

As part of the pilot project between the B.C. Centre for Disease Control, Island Health and LifeLabs, patients can now create an account, answer a sexual history questionnaire and print a laboratory requisition for testing.

Users then to go a participating LifeLabs location to give specimens and are notified by email when their results are ready.

If the results are negative, they can be viewed online.

“For me, the emphasis is to promote it for our youth populations, and for people to start thinking about (testing) as part of their regular health care,” said Dr. Dee Hoyano, a medical health officer with Island Health.

According to Hoyano, sexuallytransmitted infections such as chlamydia and syphilis are on the rise on Vancouver Island and across Canada in the last 10 years.

In 2014, there were 259 cases per 100,000 people of chlamydia in the South Island and 5.6 cases per 100,000 of syphilis.

“It’s important that people are getting tested and treated so that they’re not getting ill from it and

spreading it on to others,” Hoyano said.

She added testing technologies have improved, leading to more people being properly tested and diagnosed.

While the program is primarily being offered to residents of Victoria, Langford and Duncan because that is where the participating labs are, Hoyano said other residents can still access the project if they don’t mind the drive.

Hoyano is hopeful the service can be expanded fully into other Island communities, if the numbers of this initial program seem to warrant it.

Public health officials recommend B.C. residents get tested for HIV once every five years, regardless of their behaviour. People are told to consider testing for the other diseases based on factors like new sexual partners, or signs and symptoms.

“It’s kind of what makes sense of the individual,” Hoyano said.

“Some who are potentially at higher risk might want to do more.”

GetCheckedOnline began on the Mainland and saw 986 accounts created, which led to 456 people getting tested and 12 positive diagnoses from September 2014 to February 2016.

This Sunday (Feb. 28), everything from towels to socks to toothpaste will be bundled up in care packages at Metchosin Hall.

It’s the ninth time West Shore Baha’i groups have undertaken a service drive aimed at helping homeless people living around downtown Victoria.

“We want to help the community in some sort of way and the people who need the help right now are the homeless,” said Greg Bell, who has volunteered for this annual outreach event for five years along with his wife, Wendy. “We can help them more than we can help others.”

The goal is to assemble 200 bath bundles to be passed along to clients at Our Place. Staff from that facility gave the Baha’i groups a list of items most needed by people using bath services at the Pandora Street centre.

Representatives of the service provider will be on hand Sunday to collect the bundles, but also to talk a little about what it’s like to live on the streets of the region.

“It’s important for people to be aware that not everyone is as fortunate (as others),” says Wendy Bell, adding that service is one of the principles of the Baha’i faith.

Part of Sunday’s event will be the creation of greeting cards by children, to be included in each of the bundles, she said. “We always invite children to participate, because we think it’s important to teach them to serve others.”

While members of local Baha’i groups have been spearheading collection efforts, the public is invited to attend Sunday’s event and drop off donations of towels, new warm socks, toothbrushes and toothpaste, soap and any other small items they feel would be appreciated by receivers of the bundles.

Area Boy Scouts troops frequently help out the drive, and there are plenty of Metchosin residents, not to mention West Shore merchants, who help out with donations to the drive.

The new Centre for Trades at Camosun’s Interurban campus was opened Thursday with a ribbon cutting ceremony led by B.C.’s advanced education minister Andrew Wilkinson and Camosun College president Sherri Bell.

With 80,000 square feet of learning space, the facility aims to build upon Camosun’s position as one of the largest providers of trades training on Vancouver Island, with a number of West Shore students targeted to pass through the new centre.

“It’s a beautiful new facility,” said Ivan Oxford, program leader

for Camosun’s Nautical Training Program. “I think it sends a really strong message to industry that we are going to move forward to meet the demands of the future.”

The college currently trains more than 2,700 students each year in 20 different trades foundation and apprenticeship programs. The new building provides space for hundreds of additional students, significantly ramping up capacity on the South Island at a time when the demand for skilled tradespeople is growing.

“It’s increased the number of students we can have in this space twofold,” Oxford said. “We have two new modules that extends our capacity beyond current capa-

bilities. One is for modelling oil spill response and how we would contain or clean it up. The other is an ice module that allows us to anticipate the needs of the arctic regions, we can build ice flows, icebergs, full concentration or pancake ice and do specialized polar navigation training. We are currently the only school in Western Canada with that upgraded capacity and that kind of training is an internationally mandated requirement starting in 2017.”

For nautical training students in particular, the building is able to combine a purpose-built simulation lab and classroom space for the first time, helping meet anticipated needs of industry.

2006 Firefighting runs in the family for new recruit Kiel Ferguson, but the 20-year-old View Royal resident hasn’t even been accepted as a recruit by the time he gets his first taste of action.

After hearing cries from the Selkirk Waterway, the Belmont graduate sprints 150 metres and pulls a man out of the water. He estimates that the man, wearing a back pack, weighed 300 lbs., surely would have drowned otherwise.

Also making news the week of Feb. 24, 2006: The West Shore’s first bait car arrives on local streets. After the program enjoys some success on the Mainland, West Shore RCMP take possession of their first bait car, immediately putting it to work to trap would-be car thieves.

When bait cars were introduced on south Vancouver Island last year, auto theft rates dropped 42 per cent in Victoria and 33 per cent in Nanaimo. Car thefts are already on the decline in the West Shore, going from 219 in 2004 to 126 in 2005.

And, the Town of View Royal is looking at a $75,000 wall to help preserve a First Nations midden and burial site at Portage Park. Treasure seekers helping themselves to historic artifacts such as arrowheads and stone carvings have ravaged the ancient archaeological site, prompting the town to declare a large portion of the park off limits to the public.

Ironically Robinson, who was suffering from a migraine, was absent from the board meeting at which the announcement was made but later calls the move “politically motivated.”

VW removes virtual and real world borders Driveway

The Volkswagen GTI Roadster was created as a purely computer-generated car for the PlayStation classic “Gran Turismo 6”.

But there’s no virtual reality about the two-seat convertible displayed at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto.

A 3.0-litre V6 biturbo engine that produces 503 horsepower powers the digital-made-real roadster. Power is transmitted through a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) and 4MOTION all-wheel drive to the 20-inch wheels. The lightweight (1420 kg) super sports car reaches 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds on the way to a maximum speed of 309 km/h!

What was once a purely computer-generated car for a video game, the Volkswagen GTI Roadster is now very real.

Roadster is equipped with two race shell seats, with a seating position so low that occupants are nearly lying down.

The seats and the four-spoke grip steering wheel are covered with Alcantara. The steering wheel is mounted on a very long, exposed steering column, typical of a race car and is fitted with shift paddles that can be activated intuitively and ergonomically– without having the driver’s hands ever leave the steering wheel.

Viewed directly from the front, the Roadster looks like a typical GTI – but one originating from the next decade. The Roadster’s front end has a three-dimensional design with bumper modules that appear to hover. The bumper transitions into the wings on the sides, and a centrally integrated wide radiator grille with a honeycomb screen creates a distinct three-dimensional effect.

The radiator grille is framed by a surface finished in body colour. To the sides of this surface are the vertically arranged LED daytime driving lights and the painted exterior surfaces of the bumper. Above them are the classic red GTI radiator grille cross-stripe, VW badge and GTI logo, another air inlet with honeycomb screen and dual LED headlights. Beneath the headlights are two other narrow LED strips for the daytime running lights, which form an unmistakable light signature together with the vertical daytime running lights.

Comedians seek new material

It helps if Hyundai executives can double as stand-up comedians, specializing in self-deprecating humour.

They’ve heard all of the jokes about the notoriously unreliable Pony which the South Korean began making in 1975 and finally put out of its misery in 1990.

Casual visitors to Metchosin Golf Club might wonder what those strange-looking contraptions are placed at various spots along the fairways, or do a double take seeing people throw what appear to be frisbees around the course.

Featuring a circular array of heavy chains above a wider circular basket, the devices are part of a new development at the course designed to attract a new group of enthusiasts: disc golf players.

“It blew me away how popular it is,” said club general manager Shannon McClymont, who recently welcomed the South Island Disc Golf Society’s members to their new home.

Early this year the society came to an agreement with Metchosin Golf Club and its membership on a scenario that would see an 18-hole disc golf course set up, with the baskets – the ‘holes’ for disc golf – placed on the edges of the fairways.

While some members were a bit reluctant, McClymont said, the majority were willing to give it a try. “We said to the members, ‘don’t jump to any conclusions

The man known for making the most noise at Victoria Shamrocks lacrosse games was for once at a loss for words.

“For the first time in my life I’m speechless,” said Jody Rice, who was acknowledged by the team he has ardently supported with the presentation of a 2015 Mann Cup championship ring at the Shamrocks office in Langford on Tuesday.

“I am totally honoured and humbled to wear this ring. I’m so proud of this team and their commitment

to the community,” he said.

Team owner Jim Hartshorne recalled many occasions when the team played at the old Memorial Arena.

Rice would chase him along the concourse, passionately suggesting trades to help the team bring home a championship.

Rice, a season ticket holder since the Shamrocks moved to Colwood in 2004, said the honour ranked right up there with him being named fan of the year in 1978 by the team his brother played for in the Triangle baseball association.

Jason Sperling, operations manager for the Shamrocks, said it was a real pleasure to give Rice the ring on behalf of the team. “He epitomizes the passion in our fans,” Sperling added. reporter@goldstreamgazette.com

Belmont senior girls finish fifth The Belmont senior girls basketball team had a strong finish to their season but ultimately failed to qualify for a spot at the provincial championships in March.

For hockey fans waiting for the last moment, that time is officially here.

The Victoria Grizzlies play their last home game of the season tonight (Feb. 26) at The Q Centre with their playoff lives hanging in the balance.

Manager of hockey operations and part owner Don Robinson said an up-and-down February cost them down the stretch, and looks

for their best effort as they wind down the regular season.

“We need all our guys playing... and when you lose that for us that becomes a problem,” Robinson said. “(The) last few games here we lost a bit of focus here, there were some games where we could have got some points but didn’t.”

He said inconsistency has put them into a dogfight for the final playoff spot in the Island Division, currently occupied by both the Grizzlies and the Alberni Valley Bulldogs who are tied with 50 points.

The first tiebreaker is total wins, which bodes well for the Grizzlies holding a 23-21 lead over their division rivals. However, the Bulldogs play both their final two games at

home, while the Grizzlies spend one game on the road against the unfriendly confines of the Chilliwack Chiefs, one of the top teams in the league.

“It comes down to how well your 20 year olds play and how your goaltending is, not many teams have two 18-years-old goaltenders and they are outstanding... Hopefully we can find it in a way to win,” he said.

While early struggles made life more challenging now, all that is in the past and the only thing that matters is the game against the Powell River Kings at home on fan appreciation night. If they win their next two games, they are in the playoffs. Even one loss and that

The Belmont junior boys basketball team is off the provincials, thanks to three wins in four games at the Island championship in Campbell River last weekend.

The Bulldogs secured third place with a 73-51 win over Mark Isfeld secondary from Courtenay, a 63-42 decision over St. Michael’s University School and a 69-48 triumph over Dover Bay secondary from Nanaimo.

Although the team was disappointed with the 76-36 semi-final loss to Brentwood College, Bulldogs coach Curt Spaven said they are pleased with the overall results.

“We’re more than happy with third place and a trip to the provincials,” Spaven added.

It is with sad hearts that we share the news of the passing of Ken of a massive heart attack. He is survived by his wife, Bev, of 50 years: also his brother Gary; his children Lisa, Catherine (Mark) and Tom (Kirsten).

A very, very proud Papa to Michael (Brianne), Megan, Max, Aidan and Jacob. He served in the Armed Forces for 25 years as well as the Commisionairs for a number of years. He had a real love of the outdoors whether it be hunting with Al and Tom; or fishing with his grandsons. We would like to thank all the doctors and nurses that have seen him over the past few years – he put up a good fight.

Many thanks to the Shawnigan Lake Volunteer Fire Department and the ambulance crew that tired so hard to save him; also to Jim the CIU nurse at the Victoria General Hospital who helped us to notify Lisa and Michael. There will be an open house on Saturday, February 27 at 3362 Boyles Rd., Cobble Hill from 1-4 pm. Cremation has taken place. No flowers, donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation. From the grand window of the McRae house parlour, Kate and Rob Duncan can see as far south as Rockland, including the spires of Craigdarroch Castle.

The couple purchased and moved into the house, known as Twin Oaks, in August 2015, continuing the McRae family’s pioneer legacy.

Rob’s a descendant of Ronald and Catharine McRae, who ran a large dairy farm and orchard in the area between Cedar Hill Golf Course and St. Michaels University School.

When it was built in 1892, the house was one of the only on the hill, accessed by a lane off of Cedar Hill. Now it rests at 1525 Oak Crest Drive, overlooking the dairy farm to the south on North Dairy “Roughly, the farm ran as far north as Derby Road, east to Richmond Road, and south to North Dairy,” Kate says.

Their two young daughters will be the sixth generation to grow up in the area since Ronald and Catharine moved there in 1892.

What makes Twin Oaks unique is that it stayed in the family, as Rob’s aunt and uncle, Thyra (McRae) and Nigel Gyles, spent their lives in the home until they sold it in 1999.

Earlier in 2015 Kate and Rob, on a whim and with a passion for heritage houses, wrote a letter to the owner who had purchased and resided in Twin Oaks since 1999.

To their surprise and delight, Twin Oak’s owner was planning on selling the house.

“When we got here we found family heirlooms in the attic,” Rob said.

“Understanding we were the same family, the owner left a tin box of belongings that she inherited with the house.”

In the box is a few letters, a centuries old sword and sheath that Rob guesses came over from Britain, and a series of lace and other small Vic-

torian era garments. One of them is a 1900-era collar of a women’s outfit.

The McRae farm that may have been 40 to 50 acres is now less than an acre. Around it are towering trees including sequoia, which were popular to plant among 1890s Saanichites.

“I love visiting Craigdarroch, it was built about the same time, and it has some of the same features, like the radiators,” Rob says.

A young Rob scored the sword and a couch at the time. However, Rob and Kate later inherited an antique kitchen table from his uncle. They were unsure where it came from, until they moved into Twin Oaks.

“The table is beautiful but it’s always had a rock to it, we’ve always had to put a shim under one or two of the legs,” Kate says. “Once we brought it in here, it fit perfectly, doesn’t rock at all.” editor@goldstreamgazette.com

Workers were busy this week putting the finishing touches on McCallum Road, which is set to open today (Feb. 26).

After several months of work the McCallum Road extension - or completion - is scheduled to open today (weather permitting).

This is the last link connecting McCallum Road between the Millstream and Leigh Road interchanges.

Intended to improve the flow of traffic within the City, as well as easing some of the Millstream Road congestion, the McCallum Road project saw the roadway extended to Florence Lake Road.
