sylvan lake DOG PARK

Visiting Sylvan Lake with dogs is a walk in the park The Town of Sylvan Lake acknowledges that not all of its visitors are human, and has its own off-leash dog park where canine companions can stretch their legs upon arriving in town. The park, situated near the corner of Memorial Trail and 60 St. on the southwest end of town, has proved immensely popular with both canines and their owners since its grand opening in 2013. It’s also the site where the Sylvan Lake and District Lions Club successfully held its first Lions Foundation of Canada Purina Walk for Dog Guides in 2014, raising more than $3,200 to help provide guide dogs to individuals in need. And while dogs can run freely without a leash inside the park, there are

also trails surrounding the park and spread throughout town that make for great places to take them for a walk

while on a leash. So when you visit Sylvan Lake, don’t forget to bring your furry friend!

sylvan lake LIBRARY

New-look library a hub of activity year round Last year proved a significant year for the Sylvan Lake Municipal Library, which underwent major renovations throughout the year. Floor space increased vastly when the library expanded into a previously occupied adjoining building, resulting in more space for books, programming and mobility. The library’s children’s area was also completely revamped, and an office area expanded creating more room for staff. With the exception of a few finishing touches, renovations wrapped up in the summer, and the new-look library has since remained very much open for business. It’s a hub of activity year-round, with no shortage of programs, activi-

ties and events on offer. It is also, of course, a great place to sit back, relax and enjoy a good book, magazine, newspaper, or any other type of media you might find inside.

sylvan lake ARCHIVES

Archives Society celebrating 20-year anniversary in 2015

Living in a place that’s continuously growing, changing and evolving, Sylvan Lakers have become well accustomed to their town’s prosperous outlook, and always have an eye to the future. And thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers, Lakers are also able to effectively look back and reflect on the town’s illustrious past. The Sylvan Lake and District Archives Society is a nonprofit organization with operating costs and a part-time position funded by the Town of Sylvan Lake. It’s housed in the lower level of the Town’s Municipal Government Building (MGB), where patrons may peruse a wealth of displays, books, picture albums and maps documenting the town’s 100-plus-year history. This year is a particularly special one for the Archives, which marks its 20 years of existence in 2015. To celebrate, the Archives is running a number of historical pictures and articles in the Sylvan Lake News throughout the year, and also has plans to hold a volunteer appreciation event. For more information on that, and to experience the Archives in person, visit its premises in the MGB, where it’s open to the public every Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 4 p.m.

It is my pleasure to serve the Sylvan Lake area and my wish that all residents and visitors

enjoy all of the services and amenities that are available. No matter if it is for one day or for life – welcome to Sylvan Lake and enjoy your stay!

sylvan lake HAPPENINGS

Welcome to Sylvan Lake, where the fun never stops!

No matter what time of year you choose to visit Sylvan Lake, there’s a good chance there’ll be at least one fun event taking place while you’re here. The Town of Sylvan Lake hosts a plethora of family-oriented events year round for all to enjoy, and often attended by people from across Canada and around the world. is a Christmastime favourite, and over the past several years has raised nearly $40,000 for the town’s efforts to pursue urgent care for the area. Sylvan Lake is a fantastic place to hold festivals of any kind, and more than one big-name music festival at press time had been proposed to take place in town this year. It’s also the location where many out-of-town groups, clubs and organizations host their events, mainly due to the town’s convenient central location and wide array of amenities offered. Outside of scheduled events, there are also plenty of special events that

take place throughout the year. What follows is a list of events whose dates had been confirmed by press time. There are also plenty of other events that hadn’t yet been confirmed or even planned at the time of printing. The Town of Sylvan Lake’s website (www.sylvanlake.ca) and the Community Calendar that appears weekly in the Sylvan Lake News are good sources of up-to-date event listings and information. Social media is also helpful, where people are often all too happy to discuss everything Sylvan Lake has to offer!

kraft HOCKEYVILLE

Sylvan Lake’s Kraft Hockeyville bid a display of community spirit at its very best

It began with the loss of the town’s beloved arena, and ended in a manner few Sylvan Lakers could have ever imagined. Sylvan Lake’s journey to Kraft Hockeyville success was a long one, and one that brought out the very best in the community. community. Months of hard work by volunteers, voters, community members and members of neighbouring communities earned the town the prestigious Kraft Hockeyville moniker in 2014, along with a grand prize of $100,000 in arena upgrades and the chance to host an NHL preseason game. The game, played in September, proved one of the hottest events of the year in town, and capped a funfilled day of celebrations and activities attended by thousands of people from all over Central Alberta and beyond. A closely-fought battle between the Calgary Flames and the Arizona Coyotes ended in a 4-3 victory for the Flames, thanks to an overtime goal scored by Central Alberta native Curtis Glencross. Yet, as exhilarating as the day was, it was just one of many throughout the town’s Kraft Hockeyville campaign that brought the community together in ways previously never seen before. For months, Kraft Hockeyville fever could be felt all around town, and was evident everywhere — from posters of support displayed in homes and businesses throughout the community, to highway billboards highlighting the cause. Members of the hard-working organizing committee worked sometimes around the clock planning the next push for voting and organizing community-wide celebrations as the town progressed through the competition. In the end, Sylvan Lake tallied 2,558,137 votes in the final round of voting, defeating second-place Kingston, N.S., which had 2,449,973 votes. The announcement, broadcast live across the country, was met by scenes of sheer jubilation at the Sylvan Lake Multiplex where a viewing party was held, and where the NHL pre-season game would take place several months later. discover d disc di i sc scov over ov er r SY SYLVAN SYLV LVAN LV AN LLAKE AKEE 20 AK 2015/2016 2015 15/2 15 /201 /2 0166 01

kraft HOCKEYVILLE

While the game has now come and gone, the town’s Kraft Hockeyville’s legacy still very much remains. Plenty of memories and new friendships were made as community members banded together to rally for votes, volunteer at events or simply help spread the word. Bonds were forged between Sylvan Lake and nearby communities who joined in the town’s bid to become Kraft Hockeyville. And the soon-to-be-constructed NexSource Centre will provide the town with the much-needed ice space that’s been absent since the collapse of the old arena in the early hours of the morning Jan. 20, 2014 — the event that served as the catalyst for the town’s Kraft Hockeyville run and ensuing success. Then there’s the Sylvan Lake News-produced Tragedy to Triumph: Our Story — a 34-page special section released in May 2014 chronicling the town’s rise to Hockeyville success. Its three sections — the Past, the Present and the Future — detail the town’s Kraft Hockeyville journey, beginning with an outline of the old arena’s origins, and concluding with a look to the future and the construction of the NexSource Centre. The publication can be picked up at various locations throughout town, with some places selling it for the cost of a donation to the town’s Multiplex Redevelopment Project (NexSource Centre). For more information on how to obtain a copy, contact the Sylvan Lake News at 403-887-2331.

Plenty of choice for seniors in Sylvan Lake Sylvan Lake isn’t just a town for all seasons, it’s a town for all ages too. And for seniors seeking local recreational, social and physical activities, the Sylvan Lake Seniors Centre is a good place to start. There, they can socialize and interact with other seniors through classes, courses, information fairs and other events and activities offered both on site and in the community. Sylvan Lake Seniors Association programs aim to enhance the healthy, nutritional and spiritual well-being of participants by keeping them active; Wii bowling, yoga classes and bingo are just some of the many that do just that. And there’s plenty to look forward to in the future for seniors in Sylvan Lake; a new seniors centre is slated to be included in the town’s soon-to-be-developed NexSource Centre. Until that facility’s completion, however, there’s plenty to check out in the current Sylvan Lake Seniors Centre at 4908 50 Ave. Visit the Town of Sylvan Lake’s website at www.sylvanlake.ca for more information on the Sylvan Lake Seniors Association and other resources for seniors throughout town.

sylvan lake AGRICULTURE

Area farms to open gates to public for Alberta Open Farm Days

Billed by organizers as a ”provincewide open house,” Alberta Open Farm Days is returning in 2015, and will take place this year Aug. 22 and 23. The two-day event sees farmers and ranchers all over the province — including some in the Sylvan Lake area — open their gates to visitors for an exclusive look at their inner workings. Aug. 22 will see a variety of culinary events taking place at participating farms across the province, while the open house portion of the weekend runs throughout the day on Aug. 23. The event, since its inception in 2013, has proved vastly popular not just in Central Alberta, but throughout the entire province. That popularity became immediately apparent in the event’s first year, when more than 3,000 people visited farms provincewide. ‘Ag-tourism’ provides an insightful alternative to traditional means of tourism. “Open Farm Days gives Albertans an opportunity to discover the province beyond the city limits,” said Verlyn Olson, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, in a statement introducing Open Farm Days in 2013. “This event (highlights) the tremendous work our farmers and ranchers are doing to grow the province’s agriculture, agri-food and ag tourism industries.” To find out which farms are participating locally, visit www.albertafarmdays.com.

sylvan y lake ICE HUTS

Take It Off! - Play your part in protecting Sylvan Lake The Sylvan Lake Management Committee’s Take It Off program has proven extremely effective in protecting the lake from unwelcome debris since the program’s implementation in 2011. The program is an effort to encourage ice fishers to register their ice fishing huts online. Doing so allows authorities to identify and contact hut owners in the event of vandalism, or to remind them to remove their huts prior to the last day of ice fishing season on March 31. In 2014, just three huts were left on the lake at the end of the season. At that time, program organizers said they were hoping to see that number eventually reach zero, and for the first time earlier this year, they achieved that goal. Huts — and all of their contents — when abandoned

d i sc di s c ov ove ove er r SYLVAN SSYYLLVVAAN N LLAKE AKE 2015/2016 AK 22001155/2 /20011166 discover

can turn into harmful debris, posing a threat to both lakeusers and fish and waterfowl habitat. Wood, furniture, gasoline and plastic may either sink to the bottom of the lake or float to the surface, resulting in serious water contamination. And retrieving ice huts abandoned past the March 31 deadline can be a tricky and dangerous procedure. Take It Off mitigates the threat of abandoned huts to the lake, and requires ice fishers to register their huts only once. Registration may be completed online at sylvanlake.ca/ take-it-off. Register your ice hut now, and don’t forget to ‘Take It Off’ before March 31!

sylvan lake WATER

Sylvan Lake remains off limits to invasive species

As welcoming as Sylvan Lake is, access remains forbidden for one particular type of visitor: invasive species. Species non-native to Sylvan Lake and other lakes around the province have the potential to cause millions of dollars worth of damage each year to the economy — particularly in the areas of tourism, recreation and agriculture. Zebra and quagga mussels and the Eurasian watermilfoil plant are

SYLVAN SYLV LVAN LV LVAN AN LLAKE AKE 20 AK AKE 22015/2016 015 15/201 /201 /2 016 16 discover SY

cited by the province as the greatest threats to Alberta water bodies, but they’re by no means the only ones. Unwanted species are spread primarily through watercraft that have been waterborne in affected areas. To combat the threat, lakeusers are encouraged to take part in the Clean, Drain, Dry initiative — a thorough process of making sure watercraft remain completely free of invasive species before being

transported. In addition to boats, the initiative also applies to hip waders, construction equipment, life jackets and any other items that may be used in the water. There’s plenty of information online regarding the threat, as well as the ways of preventing it. Take a look so you can educate yourself and others, and play your part in keeping Sylvan Lake free of its most unwelcome visitor.

Projects and changes underway to help Sylvan Lake flourish and grow

The Town of Sylvan Lake’s 2015-17 budget is comprised of projects and initiatives intended to set the stage for, and contribute to creating, a positive economic environment for its residents, visitors, businesses, entrepreneurs and potential investors. Here are just some that are either underway or set to take place in the near future:

TOURISM ECONOMIC IMPACT ASSESSMENT An Economic Impact Assessment of tourism in Sylvan Lake was recently carried out, and its results are staggering! The assessment found that tourism in Sylvan Lake has a total provincial impact of nearly $75 million with almost 761,000 visitors coming to town in July and August of 2014. Results will help local tourism stakeholders determine the direction of future tourism-related efforts and initiatives. Full results of the assessment are available on the Town of Sylvan Lake’s website at www.sylvanlake. ca.

PROMOTING TOURISM ONLINE Building off the results of the Economic Impact Assessment, the Town of Sylvan Lake has launched a brand new tourism-focused website (www.visitsylvanlake.ca) to promote a variety of local and area businesses and attractions, including accommodations, dining, things to do, shopping and events. The website was developed in partnership with Tourism Red Deer and Travel Alberta. discover SYLVAN LAKE 2015/2016

BEACH AMBASSADORS The Town’s beach ambassadors will return to the lakeshore this summer to provide a warm welcome to visitors and help them with their tourism-related queries. As their title suggests, beach ambassadors are there to promote Sylvan Lake’s many beach-area activities and amenities. If you’ve got questions, or need any kind of assistance while you’re in the area, they’re a great place to start for help! Visit them at the Beach Ambassadors Hut in Centennial Park, or drop by the Visitor Information Centre on 50 Avenue, next to the library. The Centre is open May to September long weekend, Wednesday through Monday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

MOBILE VENDING Sylvan Lake Town Council earlier this year approved a 25-week Mobile Vending Pilot Project that will allow for mobile vendors to set up at various designated spots in the waterfront commercial district and Centennial Park this summer. The pilot project, whose initial proposal sparked some debate among town residents and business owners about its anticipated effects, will see vendors have the ability to sell a variety of products and services, including food, plants, art and photography, and handcrafts. Water- and land-based recreation rental vendors can also participate in the pilot project. Potential vendors are asked to contact the Town’s business licensing officer at 403-887-2141.

HOSPITALITY FEASIBILITY STUDY A Hospitality Feasibility Study looking at the investment needed to construct a hotel and convention facility in town is currently underway. Once the study is complete and identifies positive results, the Town will actively seek potential investors and private sector partners. Hotel and convention centre market demand, area event frequency, capital costs and potential economic impact are all being considered in the study. The project will also help Town Council to determine locations feasible for development, if viable.

LAKESHORE DRIVE CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS With Phases 1 through 4 completed, the Town has three more construction phases to complete or connect to Lakeshore Drive by 2017, according to its capital and infrastructure plan. Phase 5, Lakeshore Drive between 50 and 52 Streets, will likely see construction underway in the late summer or early fall of 2015. Phase 6, Lakeshore Drive between 52 Street and Marina Bay, will see detailed design planning in 2015 and construction prior to 2018. In addition, Lakeshore Drive from 33 Street to the roundabout will likely be tendered out for construction in 2016. Once completed, the waterfront commercial district will be an attractive place to live, work, play and conduct business.

CENTENNIAL STREET REDEVELOPMENT PLANS

sylvan lake PROJECTS

Centennial Street north of 48 Avenue will see a vast improvement over the next few years. Town Council’s vision for this redevelopment project is to create a welcoming space that is attractive and interesting for residents and visitors alike. With a focus on developing a walkable area, the project will also include solutions for additional parking and improved traffic movement and sightlines, specifically at the 50 Street and 50 Avenue intersection. Centennial Street will see improvements such as resurfacing, new sidewalks, unique land and streetscaping, as well as the inclusion of public art. Detailed design will take place

this summer. Construction is slated to begin in 2016.

FACADE IMPROVEMENT INCENTIVE PROGRAM To coincide with the redevelopment of Centennial Street, property owners are encouraged to access a one-time $7,500 municipal grant to renovate and improve storefronts. The pilot project was launched in 2014, reviewed and relaunched with a more streamline process and application. Facade improvements must be carried out in accordance with the Town’s new Waterfront Urban Design Guidelines. The program will expire December 2016.

29

RETAIL MARKET ANALYSIS

The Town of Sylvan Lake will be undertaking a retail market or gap analysis for commercially-zoned districts throughout the Town and proposed annexed lands. The project will be carried out over two years starting with Phase 1, which will provide a macro-level analysis of retailer supply and voids in Sylvan Lake. The goal of the project is to identify merchandise categories (retailers) based on the investor’s specific site selection criteria, and to eventually target and fill vacant commercial storefronts. Keep up to date on the status of municipal projects! Visit www. sylvanlake.ca/projects for more information.

sylvan lake RECREATION

No shortage of year-round recreational opportunities in ‘Town for All Seasons’

Living up to its billing as a ‘Town for All Seasons,’ Sylvan Lake truly offers something for everyone to do all year round. The lake itself presents an endless number of recreational opportunities, and visitors will find no shortage of things to do and see throughout town either. The Town of Sylvan Lake’s Recreation, Arts and Culture department oversees a wide variety of programming aimed at children, adults and seniors alike. And for those who prefer to partake in their own unorganized activities, there are plenty of other things to do that can be enjoyed just the same. Swimming, of course, is a great way to experience the lake and cool down in the summertime. And if swimming outside isn’t feasible, or if you’d simply prefer to stay inside, the Sylvan Lake Aquatic Centre offers a handy alternative. A growing trail system provides a means of exploring the town while staying active and getting valuable fresh air and exercise. And in winter, there’s never a shortage of skating spots to be found. Fishing is a popular year-round Sylvan Lake activity, and can be enjoyed from a boat, from the shore or on the ice. Boating and snowmobiling are also popular ways of navigating the lake.

On top of all of that, there are plenty of parks, sports fields, playgrounds, waterslides, skateparks and other recreational facilities that make great places to spend a day — or even just a few hours, if you’re only making a quick visit. The eventual completion of the NexSource Centre Multiplex facility and a spray park in Leader Field will only add to the already extensive number of year-round recreational opportunities available throughout town. Chances are you’ll pass at least a few different fun things to do as you just make your way into Sylvan Lake, and before you’ve even arrived your intended destination. But if you want to plan ahead regardless, you can find further information — including maps, event listings and program information — on the Town of Sylvan Lake’s website at www.sylvanlake.ca. There are very few sports and activities that can’t be enjoyed in Sylvan Lake. Make the most of your stay here — get out and see what the town has to offer. COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS

Annual lake cleanup aims to remove unwanted material

Every year, a concerted team effort is made to keep Sylvan Lake clean by removing garbage, debris and other unwanted material from its waters. An annual lake cleanup held every September sees scuba divers, paddlers and on-shore volunteers work together with the support of the Alberta Underwater Council, community groups and sponsors. It’s estimated that more than 18 tons of garbage have been removed from the lake since the event’s inaugural year in 2003. Bottles, cans, water toys, clothing and fish hooks are among the items most commonly found during the annual cleanup, which is tentatively scheduled to take place this year on Sept. 27. A volunteer-run shoreline cleanup also typically nets hundreds of pounds worth of garbage each year. But keeping the lake clean isn’t just a one-day event, and thankfully, there are plenty of people looking out for its well-being year round on a daily basis. By removing garbage and items that don’t belong in or near the water, you too can be one of those people.

Outdoor concert to take place in jazz festival’s absence

In 2015, and for the first time in over 12 years, the ever-popular Jazz at the Lake Festival won’t be a part of summer festivities in Sylvan Lake. But jazz lovers needn’t fret, as several noteworthy events will take place in its absence. Among them, and the biggest of a three-date concert series taking place in Sylvan Lake and Red Deer, is an outdoor concert scheduled for Aug. 15 featuring the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra, the Dan Brubeck Quarter and Sylvan Lake’s own jazz vocalist Cheryl Fisher and

saxophonist Eric Allison. Allison, who’s also chair of the Jazz at the Lake Festival Society,

(The concert) will be like nothing Sylvan Lake has ever seen before. ERIC ALLISON

said the decision to put the festival on hiatus was made only after careful deliberation and discus-

sions with the festival’s board, and would give organizers something of a “breather” following their 12 years of hard work in putting the festival together. The one-day outdoor concert in Sylvan Lake, however — whose exact location hadn’t yet been confirmed by press time — would in every way be a fitting replacement, he assured. “When the Red Deer Symphony contacted us because they didn’t want to conflict with out festival date, we started talking and figured we could do a collaboration,” he

said. “It will be like jazz with full orchestra. It will be way cool.” Brubeck, a jazz drummer, has previously proven extremely popular in the area, and returns to Sylvan Lake on the back of a successful visit in 2007 when he played that year’s Jazz at the Lake Festival. “(He) was one of our headliners way back in 2007, and just tore up the place,” said Allison. “He got a standing ovation after about the second or third tune with his band on the first set, and I’d never even seen that before. He’s a great guy and a very dynamic drummer.” Allison and Fisher are both internationally lauded musicians who call Sylvan Lake home, and round out the concert’s solid team of performers. “(The concert) will be like nothing Sylvan Lake has ever seen before,” said Allison. “It’s really exciting.” Up-to-date information on the concert is available online at www. jazzatthelake.com.

Safety first for the most enjoyable Sylvan Lake experience

A water body the size of Sylvan Lake is sure to provide plenty of fun to those who use it in summer, winter and everything in between. That said, there are some simple measures that should be taken by lakeusers to ensure their Sylvan Lake visit remains completely safe and free of incident. Taking those measures can result in more time spent embarking upon the lake’s endless list of fun activities, and less time spent in undesirable circumstances. There are plenty of resources both in print and online that offer information on how to stay safe in, on and around the water all year round. And though much of what’s written may seem like common sense, a 100% LOCALLY OWNED & OPERATED

little bit of education can go a long way for even the most frequent of lake users. To get you started, here are a few basic safety tips from the Canadian Red Cross:

WATER SAFETY

harm. • When entering unfamiliar waters, always enter feetfirst. Diving headfirst should be done only with proper training and absolute familiarity with the area of water being entered.

• Always swim with at least one other person, and obey all signs and signals in the water and on shore. • Understand that swimming in open water is much different than swimming in a swimming pool. Distances may be deceiving, while waves, water temperature and underwater objects can occasionally pose

• Never operate boating equipment under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Alcohol plays a role in more than 40 per cent of recreational boating deaths. • Be aware of weather conditions and how they may affect your boating activities. Plan ahead accordingly.

ICE SAFETY • Be aware of ice thickness and stability. The strongest ice is clear blue, while opaque ice is only half as strong. Ice that’s grey is unsafe and a sign that water is present. • In a rescue attempt, try to reach for the submerged person with a long pole or branch, if possible. Call for assistance. • If in doubt about ice safety, consult local authorities for advice. Visit the Town of Sylvan Lake’s website at www.sylvanlake.ca for public notices regarding ice closures and advisories.

Plenty of quality hockey viewing in the area

Sylvan Lake’s 2014 Kraft Hockeyville win solidified Sylvan Lake’s status as Canada’s hockey town, and the sport over the decades has remained very much a part of the community’s fabric. And just north of town lies another hockey hub in Bentley — home of the Senior AAA Bentley Generals and some of the highest-level hockey in the area. With Sylvan Lake’s own AAA Admirals having gone defunct in 2013, the Generals lie within the closest proximity to Sylvan Lake of all of the Senior AAA Chinook Hockey League’s teams. sylvan lake WINTERFEST

WinterFest and Polar Bear Dip provide frosty family fun

The Town of Sylvan Lake’s annual WinterFest celebration isn’t just a fun weekend in winter, it’s one of the highlights of the entire year. Of course, a big part of WinterFest festivities is the Polar Bear Dip, in which courageous Sylvan Lakers brave the daunting task of flinging themselves into the lake’s frigid waters. But it’s all in support of a good cause. Each ‘dipper’ raises money in support of his or her favourite charity or community group before taking the plunge. The event has proved massively popular since its inception in 1990, when it was held in conjunction with the town’s New Year celebrations. It became a part of WinterFest in 2003, and has continued to raise thousands of dollars since then. This year’s 34 dippers raised more than $24,000 for local charities — the Sylvan Lake Spray Park, Ronald McDonald House Central Alberta, the Sylvan Lake Municipal Library and the Sylvan Lake and Area Serenity Pet Shelter Society among them.

And there’s plenty more to look forward to during WinterFest, held in Sylvan Lake each year over the Family Day long weekend. Events and activities in recent years have included sleigh rides, a fireworks show, and plenty of fun family outdoor activities both on the lake and throughout the community. There’s truly a little bit of something for everyone, and the event is a strong indication of the town’s yearround appeal. sylvan lake LIGHTHOUSE

Sylvan’s iconic lighthouse returning to the lake Even in its absence, the old Sylvan Lake Lighthouse has remained one of Sylvan Lake’s most recognizable landmarks, and this year — three years after the original lighthouse was demolished — the iconic symbol will grace the lake once again. A new lighthouse is slated to be constructed this year — thanks in part to some hard-working members of the Sylvan Lake Rotary Club, who have spearheaded the initiative with help from the Town of Sylvan Lake. The new lighthouse — to be constructed on the former site of the old one — will act as the main focal point of

53

Lighthouse Park. A number of sponsorship and fundraising opportunities have been presented to the public in a bid to help fund the project. The latest is the ‘Buy a Brick Fundraiser,’ in which individuals and businesses may have their names and messages engraved on a brick that will eventually become part of the lighthouse itself. For information on how you can become a part (literally!) of this exciting project, visit www.sylvanlakelighthouse.ca, or consult the Sylvan Lake Lighthouse Project Facebook page.

sylvan lake HEALTH

Urgent care facility will make Sylvan Lake even safer

The safety of Sylvan Lake’s many annual visitors was a strong consideration in the town’s pursuit of an urgent care facility — and in the province’s subsequent decision to fund one. The construction of such a facility was confirmed earlier this year by the province, marking a successful end to the town’s years of lobbying, volunteering and fundraising for the cause. While it’s not yet known where the facility will be located, when it will be constructed or even what it will look like, its presence will most definitely improve health care access for both town residents and visitors. The town’s Urgent Care Committee confirmed earlier this year that the facility will provide medical treatment for non-life-threatening injuries, and will house lab and X-ray equipment, on-site doctors and observation beds. It will be open seven days a week with extended operating hours. Once it’s finally up and running, it will provide just one more way of making sure you’re well looked after during your stay in Sylvan Lake.

sylvan lake TOURISM

Sylvan Lake’s tourism numbers remain high

The impact of tourism in Sylvan Lake on the province totalled nearly $75 million in 2014. A visitor onsite survey — conducted last July and August as part of an economic impact assessment of Sylvan Lake tourism — explored the origins of that impact, and saw 766 visitors to town questioned on everything from transportation to accommodation. Statistics showed that of the 73 per cent out-of-town respondents, 30 per cent were from Edmonton, 28 per cent were from Calgary and 13 per cent were from Red Deer. Four per cent of respondents came from another province, while three per cent came from outside of Canada. The average visitor party of 4.27 people spent a mean amount of $351.15 on food and beverage, accommodation and transportation, among other expenditures. The average visitor spent $35.17 a day. Beach lounging proved the most popular activity among respondents, with 40 per cent having had it planned during their visit. Swimming followed closely behind at 39 per cent.

The 2014 assessment, carried out by Banister Research and Consulting, also involved traffic counts at Lakeshore Drive and 50 Street. An estimated 761,223 people visited Sylvan Lake during the summer of 2014 — how will you choose to enjoy your stay?

sylvan lake HOCKEYVILLE

Take a look back at the town’s 2014 Hockeyville journey

A special section produced by the Sylvan Lake News chronicling the town’s 2014 Hockeyville triumph was announced the best in Canada for its class in Newspaper Canada’s 2015 Great Idea Awards earlier this year. Tragedy to Triumph: Our Story, a 34-page special section released on May 29 last year, quickly became the definitive guide to the town’s Kraft Hockeyville journey. Its three sections — the Past, the Present and the Future — explore that journey in depth, beginning with a look at the construction of the town’s recently demolished hockey arena, and concluding with information about the soon-to-be-constructed NexSource Centre.

The accolade, awarded through the competition’s Community Newspaper Special Section (circulation 4,000 to 24,999) category, was presented to the Sylvan Lake News for the second year in a row. Happy 100th Birthday Sylvan Lake! , a special section celebrating the town’s centennial year in 2013, was crowned the country’s best in 2014. Great Idea Awards are presented to publications across Canada whose entries demonstrate creativity and innovation in newspaper marketing and promotion. The Hockeyville special section is still available free of charge at various locations throughout town, and at the Sylvan Lake News office on 50A Street.

sylvan lake ART

Experience the work of some of the area’s most talented artists

A downtown art gallery remains something of a hidden gem in Sylvan Lake, and offers visitors a look at the work of some of the area’s most talented artists. The Art Around the Lake Gallery is situated inside the Sylvan Lake and Area Community Partners’ Association building on 50 Ave., and for the price of admission (free), it’s most definitely worth a visit. There are plenty of familiar sights in the works displayed — many of which depict local landscapes, scenery and landmarks. The art on display can also be also purchased, and the locally-produced works make great gifts for both town residents and visitors alike. Whether you choose to shop at the gallery or simply peruse, you won’t be disappointed by what Sylvan Lake’s artists have to offer. For just a small sample of what’s inside, visit the Art Around the Lake Gallery Facebook page.
