Leduc receives two nominations for national sport awards

Mayor Greg Krischke has been nominated for the Sports Tourism Champion of the Year award and the World Sledge Hockey Challenge is up for the Canadian Sport Event of the Year in group B, an event with a budget of less than $1 million.

tic,” said Krischke, referring to what he calls a humbling nomination.

“Sports tourism is really important for our city and I”m a champion of this city.”

“We need to do things that will promote our community and will bring revenue into our community,” he added.

Krischke says Leduc has been part of events that have been proven to bring $1 million directly into the city and another $800,000 to the province.

One such event was the 2015 World Sledge Hockey Challenge. “It was by far and away the best world sledge hockey event that had been held,” said Krischke.

He says teams were more than impressed by the attendance, fanfare and treatment.

Committee co-chair Janet Guthrie feels having the event nominated for the award is exciting, especially with the extra and unusual challenges faced this time around.

Awarded the opportunity to host the event only four months in advance, the committee was up against a daunting timeline. “Typically a group would have a year to two or more to plan.”

This was also right around the time the price of oil crashed, making it hard for the event to find sponsors. “We had to adapt on the fly,” said Guthrie.

Two weeks before the event Guthrie’s co-chair Gary Tremblay suddenly

passed away. She says it was a blow to the committee and the entire event to lose someone so dedicated.

One of the most uplifting aspects of the event was the education and awareness brought to the sport of sledge hockey, not only for the international players but also for the local athletes as well.

Guthrie says one Team Canada player was able to visit five schools, making the sledge hockey players the stars of their school for that time period.

With more awareness, a light was shone upon the talented athletes depicting them as just that, rather than disabled athletes playing an adapted sport, says Guthrie.

From it’s nominees the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance is looking for groups able to explain their event’s community impact, economic impact, sports tourism impact and challenges.

The 2015 World Sledge Hockey Challenge is the first international event the city has hosted alone.

“We’ve generated good economic impact,” said Guthrie.

The event generated just over $71,000. Each of the three organizations that made of the committee—Leduc Minor Hockey Association, Edmonton Adapted Sports and Paralympic Canada— each took 30 per cent and the remaining money was donated to the 2016 Alberta Summer Games

The gold medal game from the event was televised by TSN and had a 45,000 viewership. “We had excellent coverage by the media,” said Guthrie.

Volunteerism was also big for the event and another shining positive.

“The volunteerism, we all know it’s a really big part of Leduc culture …

We had more volunteers than we had positions for,” said Guthrie.

The 10th Annual PRESTIGE Awards will be presented March 7 at the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance Sport Event Congress in Ottawa.

LCHS girls basketball looking forward to playoffs

BY STU SALKELD THE PIPESTONE FLYER The Leduc Composite High School Tigers girls basketball team is hitting its stride as the post-season approaches.

Assistant coach Dan Reitz said the girls have had their ups and downs, but the team has been playing better and better as the season goes on. “The season has been pretty solid,” said Reitz by phone Feb. 17.

“To be honest, in the last week or so I think we’ve played some of our best ball of the year,” he added.

He noted the team has been cutting down on problems like unforced errors, and reaped the benefits: more points on the scoreboard and more wins. Reitz said it looks like the girls are peaking at the right time.

Reitz saying playing in division 1 means brining their “A” game every day, as the competition is so intense a lackluster effort won’t cut it.

LCHS is currently in sixth place, with a 5-5 record in league play and, as of Feb. 11, two games left. LCHS was to face Bev Facey Feb. 11, a team one game ahead of LCHS in the standings. “So, a huge game,” said Reitz.

He noted playoffs start Feb. 29 and the league utilizes a seeding formula, so finishing the season strong and climbing the

rankings will help the team. But Reitz said the girls are ready for playoffs regardless.

“If we play well, we can play with anyone,” said Reitz.

He said the coaching situation has been successful as well. Reitz said he and assistant coach Cassia May have had a great year, and a number of players have spent up to six years with coach Mark May, who Reitz described as demanding a competitive team.

The LCHS girls attended the Battle River Shoot-out tourney in Wetaskiwin this past weekend. The LCHS Tigers faced the Barrhead Gryphons Friday and topped them with a 78-18 win. Reitz said Barrhead was very young and inexperienced. “We played everyone and everyone contributed but not the greatest game in terms of a showcase for our abilities as a team,” he said.

The semi-final saw the Tigers take on a tough Medicine Hat McCoy team, ranked #2 3A. The Tigers lost a close 49-59 game.

“Great game,” said Reitz. “Back and forth, both teams contained each other’s offence fairly well, tied after three quarters, the fourth quarter saw sharper shooting by McCoy, which eventually won the tournament beating Wetaskiwin in the final.

Probably our best game of the weekend.”

The bronze medal game saw LCHS take on Holy Trinity Academy from Okotoks, ranked

LCHS #12, Allison Raitz, attacked the Medicine Hat zone Feb. 20 at Clear Vista School.

7th in 3A. The Tigers won win 71-39. “We played well but HTA was shorthanded and ran out of gas, especially in the fourth quarter,” said Reitz. “Again we played well, keeping steady pressure on them and cycling our bench onto the court.”

Reitz noted the girls will likely be fifth in the 13 team Div 1 Metro League and play fourth place Paul Kane of St. Albert on Monday Feb. 29.
