’ve seen them at more than a few events around town.

He with his hats, costumes, puppets, and seemingly never-ending supply of balloons.

She with her camera, capturing moments and memories.

Together, they help bring the “community” aspect to community events.

They are Click and Clown, or – as they are known by their civilian names – Donna And Jim Miburn.

And I’m here at Kanaka Creek Coffee on a Friday morning to get the low-down, (or a behindthe scenes-look if you will,) on what brought about the creation of Click and Clown, and the story of the pair behind the popular duo.

Although they moved to Maple Ridge just three years ago, Donna and Jim have lived in the area – Pitt Meadows to be exact – since 1989.

“The first show we did in Pitt Meadows, was at Pitt Meadows Elementary for their Fun Day, in June of 1990,” Jim – aka Dilly the Clown – recalls. “It was a lot of fun.”

Jim’s foray into the clowning world came about somewhat by chance.

‘I used to work for [BC] Children’s Hospital in the biomedical engineering department,

and our children were young at the time,” he recalls.

It was around 1987, and a party for the sick kids was being planned, but the clown organizers had arranged for couldn’t make it.

Ridge Meadows RCMP are investigating an assault that took place against a man and a woman by a group of men just before 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20 at a Chevron gas station in the 22200 block of the Lougheed Highway.

Pitt Meadows has chosen Mark Roberts as its chief administrative officer. Roberts has worked with the city since 2013 as director of finance.

some professional courses, and the Milburns realized Jim could entertain, and Donna could take photos: And in September 2009, Click and Clown was born.

The name was suggested by a friend, Donna recalls.

These days, the pair is booked at a variety of shows, all over the Lower Mainland, from Surrey to North Vancouver and everywhere in between.

In addition, Donna does photography work for local businesses and other entities outside Click and Clown.

“We get booked up so quickly,” Jim relates. This includes juggling multiple shows at a time, as they “don’t like to turn down bookings,” Donna says.

And that’s no small thing, considering that these days there’s “big time” competition in the world of clowning – specifically birthday party shows.

“We don’t let that bother us,” Donna notes. “This is a retirement business for us. We want it to grow, but we’re not pounding the pavement for shows.”

Other than word-of mouth, a website, and a Facebook page, “we don’t advertise,” says Jim. The show changes, depending on how Jim and Donna “read the crowd” they’re performing for.

“We usually do a one-hour or hour-and-a-half show at things like birthday parties,” Jim says.

The pair also performs during Christmas season as Santa and Mrs. Claus.

At the end of the day, it’s about loving what they do, while creating memories for themselves and for those who watch their shows.

“That’s the best part of it all,” says Jim.

On Tuesday, the group of students were asked how they could fill their worlds with more kindness.

“My dream was that I wanted to be a superhero and change the world,” Way told the students. “I decided to be a leader but I can’t do this alone, I need your help.”

Way shared examples of some of the good deeds students from other schools have accomplished, such as implementing recycling programs in their schools, and raising $400 for the Vancouver Aquarium.

The group of students brainstormed acts of kindness they

could try at their schools, which included playing with kids who are sitting alone, posting encouraging messages on hallway walls, and donating to the homeless.

“365give is an umbrella celebrating what’s already going on and encouraging it,” Way said. “[Kids] want to be at school and that’s what we want.”

One big day of giving Blakeway said that during the next three months, every school will commit its own acts of kindness, and the tree will be updated at the district’s general meetings. The tree will be on display at the School Board office.

On May 30, 10 elementary school students from each school

in the community will gather for “one big giving day,” Blakeway said. The day will be organized by high school students in the district, and include workshops on how to be leaders and continue the giving philosophy.

In the afternoon, using the roughly $2000 raised through selling Kindness Counts T-shirts, the students “will participate in a day of giving by offering random acts of kindness throughout the community,” Blakeway explained.

The students will then recap the acts of kindness that took place during the three month campaign, and celebrate what Blakeway hopes will be a “full tree” with blue stickers.

Presented and hosted by the Chamber of Commerce serving Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, this year’s event is a 1920’s prohibition speakeasy-themed, black-tie affair, and takes place at the SKY Helicopters hangar at the Pitt Meadows Airport.

There may be heavy hearts after the passing of ‘Poppa Duck’ Bob Shantz, but that won’t stop the enthusiasm for the annual Rotary Duck Race.

Bonnie Telep, realtor and owner with Tri-Tel Coldwell Banker, and new organizer of the race, is ready to follow in Shantz’s footsteps.

“It’s going to be a challenge, but I think we’re up to it,” she said.

Both the Meadow Ridge and Haney Rotary Clubs are involved in putting this race together.

They started six years ago with the goal of raising money for non-profit organizations and youth groups.

The poll is open until April 11, and will culminate with a Downtown Maple Ridge Business Awards celebration.

“We want to get the word out about this poll, so everyone has a chance to have their say on who is the best of the best in downtown Maple Ridge,” said DMRBIA membership and events coordinator, Michelle Zazulak.

The poll itself has 37 categories, with one winner per category.

“We will announce the top three businesses in each category prior to our Annual General Meeting on April 25,” Zazulak added.

Pets deserve kindness

ets owned by British Columbians are usually well cared for.

Whether they have pampered indoor animals or muddy-pawed working dogs and barn cats, people generally take the health and well being of their animals seriously.

When there are incidents of animal abuse and neglect, the general population is shocked. The death of six dogs in a dog walker’s truck caused an uproar. The discovery of the emaciated husky, Willow, in Maple Ridge, along with SPCA raids on an alleged puppy mill in Langley and a breeder/kennel in Surrey have all sparked outrage and a public conversation on how we treat our household pets.

This week, the B.C. government announced changes to the code of practices for kennel operators and cat and dog breeders.

The new rules will provide for minimum space for animals, a duty to provide immediate veterinary care, and may include proactive monitoring and enforcement for breeders. That last rule sounds like a good idea – a few random inspections could go a long way to clean out the dark corners of the industry. No matter how many reputable breeders there are, the industry also attracts the unscrupulous out to make a quick buck at the expense of animals.

More than a third of Canadians own a cat or a dog, according to a survey last year by the Canadian Animal Health Institute.

We owe it to our pets to take good care of them, and to ensure that care is being taken of the industries that supply us with pets.

Animals come into our lives from breeders, from friends with litters, and from animal shelters. They become parts of our families, providing companionship. All they ask is food and shelter and care, and sometimes a tossed ball or a warm lap on which to sleep.

People sometime question why the public seems to get angrier about crimes against animals than about violent crimes involving adult humans. The simple reason is that, like children, animals didn’t make any choices to be where they are. They are entirely at the mercy of their owners. We owe it to them to ensure that their owners do not fail them.

Whatever happened to the classroom posters that kept us old fogeys on the straight and narrow when we weren’t yet old fogeys?

Those posters used to admonish those of us fortunate enough that our parents could afford to provide us with bicycle transportation to “Be Safe!” and ensure that we all knew – and used – our hand signals before turning left or right, or before stopping.

And of course there was the classic message, always illustrated with a poorly executed drawing of a sunny-faced child on a bike, expostulating, “Bicycles are vehicles, they must obey the rules of the road!”

If a teacher spotted us disobeying those admonishments in any way – at any time at all, in or out of school – our parents would hear about it.

And we’d learn to walk anew.

At least until we learned that cycling

safety is both etiquette and law, and that courteous cycling would pay dividends beyond saving us from injury and keeping us and others alive.

I have a theory: that the kids who never properly learned those lessons grew up to become the drivers who don’t understand the concept of a stop sign and appear to have difficulty distinguishing between the buttons and knobs that control their car’s music system from those that operate their turn signals.

And comes the first breath of spring, they are the ones roaring past our homes, rattling our windows and terrifying out children and pets.

If you’re one of those, here’s something to ponder. The sentiments expressed in the thoughtful looks you get as you gun your motors and crank up the volume another notch aren’t, “Wow! What a car!” They’re, “Wow! Just another jerk!”

Ah, yes. Spring is in the air.

And brains are left under the couch.

Logic called for to defeat ISIS Dear Editor: In response to my letter regarding Canada’s abrogation of its duty to its allies [Snub embarrasses Trudeau-led Liberals, Feb. 11 Opinion, Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows TIMES], a commenter writes, “ this is the sort of hysteria we have come to expect from a small group to the south” [Facebook Feedback, The TIMES].

So far 10 major countries are sufficiently “hysterical” to have formed a military alliance to fight ISIS. The French, after suffering major attacks, are at the front line with 3,500 serving. The military coalition consists of Australia, France, Jordan, U.S. Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Britain, U.A.E. and the Netherlands.

Twenty six nations altogether are involved in a military offensive against ISIS. Thirty seven other countries are involved not militarily, which includes Canada.

My point being in my original letter was why our defense minister was not invited to a meeting of our allies as their

defense ministers are pledging to aggressively target ISIS. So far ISIS controls thousands of miles in Northern Iraq and Syria. Their stated mission goal is a global caliphate won through a world-wide war, “to take it to Europe and America.”

It’s logic, not hysteria that is called for.

To paraphrase English poet John Donne, “No country is an island.”

It is quite the opposite.

We are much safer because of Liberal policies.

Not having jets bombing Iraq does not make us less safe.

Trump mentality that bombing is the solution is the same mentality that bullies have – solve problems with violence.

The same conservative solution to crime – put them all in jail.

The same mentality your child misbehaves physical punishment is the answer.

The Liberals have a thoughtful plan that is better – a plan very much like Germany.

Bombing is a small part of the fight and one that frequently killed many innocent people and created a lot of hate of the west.

Having a few planes bombing was only a political move Harper used to get support from those who see violence as only solution for violence.

Harper only cared about image, not solutions.

Canadians again will be able to travel the world with a Canadian flag and know they will be safer because Trudeau is working at improving the situation and our image.

Cautionary tale: keep your CareCard Dear Editor, This is an open letter to all citizens of Maple Ridge, as we all know every five years we have to renew our driver’s licences.

Plus, now the provincial government will issue new MSP CareCards.

My wife went for hers two days ago, and when it came to the CareCard she was

asked if she wanted her picture, or a number on the card?

Once this was a finished the young lady kept her CareCard. My wife, not thinking, didn’t query this and when she got home told me, “I didn’t think this was right.”

Not knowing the MSP phone number, I phoned Fraser Health.

The lady I explained this to thought this was a real good question. She gave me the number and I contacted them.

The person was quite concerned, as all the driver’s license offices were told not to take the CareCards, as it would be a while before one gets their new cards.

Therefore, as she had no proof, she would have to pay for the service but would

be reimbursed at a later date.

I was also asked where this took place.

I said “Maple Ridge,” and they would also let ICBC know.

I sincerely hope no one else will be in this same situation.

Keep your card.

I wonder how many citizens in B.C. now have no card for proof.

Residents fed up with construction ‘mess’ Dear Editor, We live on Fieldstone Walk in Pitt Meadows and are fed up with the mess, the dirt, and loss of beauty due to construction.

They have bought the land for light commercial warehouse use but the land is still agricultural.

Pitt Meadows Mayor John Becker thinks its great for the city.

The residents do not feel the same way.

One would like to think they should have correct zoning before they start any construction or dirt digging.

We welcome someone to come to our home and photograph the mess out back.

A Pole Unveiling took place on Tuesday, February 23 at Pitt Meadows Secondary. Members of the Katzie First Nation were on hand with members of Council and School District 42 to unveil the pole carving project that will be displayed in the MultiPurpose Room at Pitt Meadows Secondary.

Spring is on the way, but it’s not quite here yet. Even though the weather may be warm in the day, freezing can still occur overnight, causing icy conditions in the early morning. The City’s public works crews de-ice when necessary, but please use caution when driving!

Council recently committed to a target of maintaining current service levels and providing quality services and programs using a “hybrid” model for parks and recreations services in Pitt Meadows.While remaining mindful of the current budget allocation, that model will include City staff complemented by contracted services and strategic partnerships in various forms to provide the most cost effective and efficient services. Senior animals given a boost: The SAINTS fundraiser held recently at the Haney Public House, in support of an animal rescue facility in Mission, was a huge success. It raised $13,555 for the cause, reported organizer Romana Van Lissum (right), who shared this picture of her and good friend Karly O’Neil prior to the event. All proceeds go to SAINTS (Senior Animals In Need Today Society), a sanctuary for senior and special needs animals that have nowhere else to go.

An open mic talent show this Sunday, Feb. 28 aims to help stock the shelves for the Salvation Army Ridge Meadows’ school lunch program.

Kyle Herman, or ‘Arak StarrEagle’ as he’s known on stage, is the chairman of the Halcyon Imagineers.

A local group of like-minded artists and musicians, they imagine themselves as comic book-like characters using their talents to spread peace and love to the world. Clad in colourful costumes, the Imagineers perform locally in a variety of campaigns to raise money for charity.

One such campaign is the Noble Hearts series, which they started in 2014, and the open mic night is a part of this series. Gary Redmond is the Imagineers’ chief administrator, and co-host of the event with Herman.

“If I’m captain Picard, then he’d be commander Riker,” Herman chuckled. “You can tell I like Star Trek.”

All of the Imagineers videography is done by Darren Gressel.

Herman said his technological expertise has been invaluable to the group over the years.

Kyle Herman Both Bob Cockroft and Phil Halcyon Ransom are equally responsible Imagineers for graphics design and artistic direction, such as posters and graphics for their Facebook page. Ransom is also responsible for the group’s sound engineering.

Tom Veltan – who Herman calls an “honorary member” of the group, and Maverick Marcel Gamache are both musicians.

Herman said he’s happy to have these men to work with, all of their contributions are equally important, and he thinks it’s important to recognize the hard work they do.

As an open mic night, Herman wants to have 10 to 12 slots open for anyone to perform. Spots work on a “first come first serve” basis, and about 10 minutes long.

People of all ages are welcome to the open mic, and Herman said it will be a family friendly atmosphere.

The event runs from 2 to 4 p.m., at 22188 Lougheed Hwy.

The play showcases the lives of residents of small town Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire during a time of political turmoil and financial unrest.

Evans told The TIMES that the play’s plot shares an important message about unplugging technology and giving more attention to loved ones.

“I feel like there’s always people wasting [their] time playing video games and on

their phones when really you should be spending time with your family and making the memories really count,” she said.

Evans plays the role of Emily Webb, the oldest sibling in the Webb family and love interest of George Gibbs.

In Act 3, after her character dies in child birth, Evans said that she finds herself in the graveyard – depicted as a black scrim on stage – where she’s

given the chance to return back to the living.

“In the graveyard, I talk to these other people and I realize I can go back and re-live my life,” she explained. “Every one in the graveyard tells me not to, but doesn’t tell me why.”

During a monologue with her mother, Evans she said, her character decides to return behind the scrim after all.

“I end up going back to the graveyard because I realize that human beings don’t understand how precious the time is that they have with their families,” she said.

Evans, who described her character as “kind, caring, and considerate of other people,” said that she’s “actually taken a page out of Emily’s book” to practise in her own life and relationships.

“Sometimes I’ll be like what would Emily do?” she explained.

Our Town opens March 2, with two more performances on March 3 and 4. Doors open at 6, and show time is at 7 p.m.

The Community Education on Environmental and Development (CEED) Centre Society is holding the free event to give an opportunity for agricultural enthusiasts to exchange seeds and learn more about seed saving.

Seed saving is taking the seeds from flowers, vegetables, fruits, berries, grain, or herbs and saving them for future use.

Christian Cowley, executive director of the CEED Centre Society, said this event is part of a worldwide movement encouraging seed saving. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Usually when you buy seeds, you buy more than you need,â&#x20AC;?

Cowley said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a way for

people to buy some and then exchange them, or to exchange ones theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve grown themselves.â&#x20AC;?

In addition to exchanging seeds, there will be a presentation on the introduction of seed saving. Cowley said itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not as easy as it sounds. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s different for each species,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not difficult, but there are tricks.â&#x20AC;?

Cowley said one of the CEED Centreâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s goals is to improve the local food system, and he wants to create a large community garden. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are no large community gardens in Maple Ridge,â&#x20AC;? Cowley said.

He defined a large community garden as one that can accommodate 20 or more people.

In order to create this garden, Cowley said he has asked Maple Ridge City council for land to build a complex on, and heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s currently waiting for a reply.

In addition to the garden, Cowley wants to build a farm school to be run by one of the post secondary institutions.

Sydney Francis, a 19-yearold University of B.C. student from Maple Ridge, likes what she sees when it comes to her school’s new student housing concept.

Francis was one of the many students who checked out the next trend in campus housing Monday, Feb. 22, when the university built a mock-up of a 140-square-foot unit in the centre of a busy student lounge area.

“I’d probably prefer this to my basement suite,” she said.

She and her sister split $970 a month rent for a basement suite in Marpole, a half-hour’s commute from campus.

Seventy such “nano” units – complete with a kitchen, a shower equipped bathroom, and a fold up desk-bed combo – will rent for $700 a month when they’re built as part of a $70-million, 650-bed housing complex on top of a new campus bus terminal by 2019.

Students are yet another group pinched by a tight Vancouver rental market, which has prompted the university to add 2,250 new beds in five buildings over the next three years to the Point Grey campus’s stock of just over 10,000 student beds.

Francis said they were lucky to find their apartment last November, after a three-month search.

Before that, she was commuting from her parents’ place in Maple Ridge.

The units are a new wrinkle, adding to a mix that includes communal apartments, dorms and “standard” UBC self-contained apartments of about 230 sq. ft., that rent for about $1,100.

A special wrestling event at 7:30 p.m. this Saturday, Feb. 27, at the Greg Moore Youth Centre (GMYC), is for a good cause.

The GMYC and Elite Canadian Championship Wrestling (ECCW) have partnered together to bring Wrestlefest for the Bird’s Nest to town.

The event is a fundraiser for The Bird’s Nest, a local organization founded by Maple Ridge resident and professional ECCW wrestler, Andy Bird.

Originally from Montreal Lake SK., Bird is a member of the Montreal Lake Cree Nation.

Through the event, he hopes to raise money for the “Bird’s Nest,” a house where young adults from his reserve can come to live temporarily, and learn the life skills here that he says on which they’re missing out in Montreal Lake.

In 2014, Park competed in the Winter Games with some of the athletes who she now will be coaching.

“It was me and the boys,” she said with a laugh.

So far, her role as head coach has given her experience that she can use to pursue her other passion: child and youth care.

“I always said I wanted to work with kids,” she said.“In [child and youth care], you’re teaching kids through play therapy.”

Local skaters setting sights on BC Winter Games The games take place this weekend in Penticton.

The Mission City Outlaws have a pulse.

Heavily favoured in their Pacific Junior Hockey League opening round series against the Ridge Meadows Flames, the Outlaws looked as though they were about to be victims of a major upset, after the Flames jumped out to a 3-0 series lead.

This is astonishing, really, considering the Outlaws finished on top of the PJHL’s Harold Brittain Conference, ended up 21 points ahead of the fourth-place Flames in the conference standings, and had entered the best-of-seven series riding a 12-game unbeaten streak – not to mention the fact they had beaten the Flames five times during the regular season.

But now it’s the Outlaws with momentum heading into Friday’s game six, after – for the second straight contest – they won 3-2 in overtime Tuesday at the Mission Leisure Centre.

Flames head coach Bayne Ryshak said his team isn’t discouraged, despite missing out for a second time to put the Outlaws away.

“The guys are fine,” Ryshak said.

“We’ve talked and you can’t dwell on things. You have to take it one game at a time and focus on what you can control or you’ll defeat yourself.”

St. Patrick’s School is one big step closer to buying a new playground for the schoolyard, thanks to the support of attendees during the 22nd annual Luck of the Irish Trivia Night and Fundraiser.

Those in attendance could enjoy beer – of the green variety – raffles, and games.

By night’s end, the school raised $27,500, the last amount of monies needed for the $75,000 playground fund.

“It was really successful,” event chair Frances Smart said. “Everyone had a really good time.”

The big ticket items were two parking spots, she said, that were auctioned to the highest bidder at $4,000.

“It was a very good night,” said school principal Clive Heah. “There’s ultimately two goals in fundraising: raising the money and growing the community and both were achieved.”
